Now let the sea day I'll be doing hello, my name is Claudia. I was born and raised in Sardinia and I still call it home. I am the mastermind behind the Sweetly Sardinia Travel Blog and now the Sweetly Sardinia Podcast where each week I will bring you the best Sardinia has to offer and share my most useful tips that will help you plan a memorable trip to my wonderful island. In the last episode, I told you everything you should know to help you plan a wonderful trip to the Galura region of northern Sardinia. This is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations on the island. Today is the 25th of September, and while summer isn't quite over yet, here, here in Sardinia we're looking into October soon and October is a wonderful time to visit. Before I continue with today's episode, let me remind you that you will find a more detailed version of today's episode on my blog, streetlysardina.com you will find the link to my blog post on the episode description, so don't forget to read that for more information. Now, today's topic Sardinia in October. Well, you know, Sardinia is a really popular summer holiday destination. People come here in Sardinia because they want to experience the wonderful crystal clear waters, the magnificent beaches and the incredible atmosphere of the summer on the island. But should you travel to Sardinia in October? To make a long story short, you should. Sardinia is simply wonderful in October. But let me give you a few more reasons why you should visit Sardinia in October. And in case you decide to come here in this month, I will share a few things that you could do and some tips to visit the island at this time of year. So first of all, Sardina in October weather is very pleasant. Summer here does not quite end on the 21st of September. It can go all, all the way until mid October. This means that you can come here. You can still enjoy the beaches and the tourist destinations without the terrible summer heat that we experience on the island. The weather is less hot, it's less humid, it's pleasant to wander around the island. Rain becomes more frequent in November when temperatures start decreasing more dramatically. It can rain in Sardinia in October, but it's not as frequent compared to the rest of the fall. Another reason to visit Sardinia in October is that it's not nearly as crowded. I mean, I've been telling you all along that Sardinia is an incredibly popular summer holiday destination. The largest crowds will visit Sardinia in July and August. A lot of people come in June and many, many will come at least until the second week of September. But that's also when kids get back to school. And so Sardinia empties of tourists after the second week of September. If you visit in October, the largest crowds will be gone. You'll have a beach to yourself, you'll have a hiking trail to yourself. You will be one of a very few people in an archaeological site. You won't strike struggle finding a table at an amazing restaurant. The colors of Sardinia are incredible in October. Fall is a magic season here. It shows how the nature changes on the island. You know, you start seeing some yellow fields, the green trees that change their color. There is foliage certainly in the mountains, in places like. Like Laconi, for example. So October is definitely a good month for that. The rain that may fall in October will also offer you the chance to see very small waterfalls scatter around the island at their best, because in the summer they are dry. But it's also much cheaper. Many people ask me whether Cernina is expensive, and it is. If you visit Sardinia in the summer, prices skyrocket. But if you avoid that and decide to come in October, it will be much, much cheaper. When the crowds are gone, the places become more reasonable, which makes it easier on your wallet. Now that you know why October is a good month to visit Sardinia, let's see how you can make the most of it. Number one, obviously go to the beach. Our beaches are still amazing in October. Perhaps the days aren't as long. It means that around 3 or 4pm at most you will have to leave because temperatures start to cool down a lot. But you will have the beach to yourself, especially if you go during the week. The water is still warm, so surprisingly warm, because it's been warming up throughout the summer. So this is a nice month to still go to the beach. I certainly go. You don't want to go to the beach? Well, you can have a picnic in the woods. There are many beautiful forests in Sardinia that you can easily visit. The first one that comes to mind is the one at the Parco Hemric in Laconi. But there's also Foresta Burgos in the north of Sardinia that you could visit. They are lovely places, easy to reach by car. You can bring a picnic and sit down and have a relaxing time. October is also a great month to go on a hike. A lot of people come here in the summer months and decide that they want to hike either to the Goropo Gorge, which is one of the most popular places to go hiking in Sardinia, or to one of the incredible beaches off the coast of Baunai. But if you do it in the summer it's hot, you'll be melting throughout the hike. October is much more pleasant hiking weather. So you can, for example, go on a hike to places like Calamariolu, California, Calabriala, Cala Goloriza. You can still enjoy some time at the beach and then you walk up and the temperatures won't be brutally hot. If you enjoy surfing, October is also a great month for that. The winds pick up a little bit more than they do in the summer, which means there are good waves in various places around the island. Of course this cannot be predicted. It can be that case or it may be just a chance. Just a case that you visit Sardina in October and it's not windy at all and you will be able to go surfing. But keep this in mind. Of course you can also go climbing. Now, climbing in Sardina is a very popular sport. There are several places that you can do that.

There are climbing climbing paths around the island. But depending on where you go in the summer it can be so hot that climbing is very difficult. Again. The weather of October is perfect because the rocks won't overheat and it makes it much more pleasant to experience a climbing experience. Sardinia is wonderful in October and the nature is at its best. There are several caves that you can visit at this time of the year. One of the most popular one would be the Grotte di Nettuno in Alghero, Neptune's Grotto. You can reach them in several ways, for example by boat from Alghero. Or you can take the Escala del Cavirol, which is a staircase that walks you down all the way to the entrance of the caves. And you can walk back up without having to melt in the sun. Sardinia's nature also offers the chance of going wildlife spotting in October. You could go for example, to Molentar Jus to see the beautiful pink flamingos. Or you can go to the Parco della Jarra to admire the wild Jarrah horses. We call them Cavallini della Jarrah because they're so tiny. So you have that possibility too. But along with nature reserves, we have a bunch of archaeological sites that come October are much more pleasant to visit because, well, first of all, less crowds. And second, you don't have to melt in the sun. There are several that I recommend visiting. For example, Taros and Nora. Taros is a multi strata site with Phoenicians and Roman ruins in them. And similarly to that, there's Nora archaeological site which can be visited from Cagliari as well. Or if you want something that is entirely Sardinian, you could visit Anuraga, such as that of Sunuraji in Barumini. But there are many, many more around the island. October in Sardina is also another wonderful month to enjoy the many festivals. There are so many festivals in Sardinia at this time of year. Now the one that most people travel to will be Autunno in Barbaja. This festival actually takes place throughout the fall, starts in mid September and ends in mid December. Every weekend a different small town in the mountain region of Barbaja here in Sardinia hosts a festival that lasts two days, Saturday and Sunday, during which you can enjoy traditional food, learn more about the local culture, the history, see the traditional costumes of Sardinian people, listen to the traditional music. But this is not the only festival that that happens in October in Sardinia. Another one that I really love is, and this takes place in a small town called Seoui S E U I in the Ogliasra region of Sardinia. Now to give you an idea where the Ogliastra region is, that's where the town of Baunee is located. And you may know that because of the coast of Baunai, this festival, suburugadorio, lasts from 31 October until 2 November. And it's a very traditional way. Sardinia has to celebrate what you would call Halloween, the Day of the Dead. It's a wonderful thing to experience. The atmosphere is incredible. The various spots on the town are open for you to visit, so you can for example, visit the old jail, the churches, and learn obviously about the history and the culture of the place. October is also a great month to explore Sardinian cities. It's not as hot as I said many times. So you can take it easy. You can walk around the city like Kaliari, where there are less tourists to enjoy the unique atmosphere of a place that is entirely local. You can visit the many museums, for example. Now I want to share some final tips in case you decide to visit Sardinia in October. Wear and bring layers. Of course it's never going to be as cold as December, but it's also not nearly as warm as July or August. Make sure to bring a rain jacket, a warmer layer for the night. Bring T shirts, sweaters, long trousers for the evening. So keep it simple. Bring comfortable shoes and clothes. Now this is something that I always recommend no matter when you're traveling. But if you're visiting in October and you intend to hike, you will need something that is specifically for that purpose. Now I hike all the time and I often see people going on hikes with just plain shoes, sometimes even flip flops. That is not one thing that you want to do here in Sardina. The terrain can be very difficult to tackle with regular shoes. You will need hiking shoes for that. If you don't want to go on a hike, you still need comfortable clothes, something that allows you to be walking around easily all day. You should also bring sunscreen because the sun is still quite strong. But an umbrella. Now sunscreen you have to apply as always throughout the day when you are exposed to the sun. And an umbrella. Just pack one just in case because you never know, it may still rain in Sardinia in October. Now this brings me to the end of my episode. But before I share the topic of the next episode, let me remind you that if you need more help and more tips than to plan your Sardinia holiday, you can book a one hour travel consultation with me. The link for that is in the episode description as well, so make sure to read that once again. Of course, there's always my blog, Sweetly Sardinia that has even more tips that help you plan your trip to Sardinia and it's entirely free to read. Next week I will tell you everything you need to know if you wish to visit Sardinia in the winter. So so December, January and February. Finally, if you like my podcast, make sure to share with your friends who are coming to Sardinia. Give it a five star rating. Give it a good review now. Until next week. Goodbye.
