Madison Sullivan Thorpe
This is Stylish, the podcast for all things fashion, brand, business and beauty. My name is Madison Sullivan Thorpe and I am joined as always by my co host, Joanna F.L. fleming and Annika Joshi Smith.
Annika Joshi Smith
Hello.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Hello.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Happy Wednesday.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I feel like I'm kind of stepping on your toes delivering this news, but I feel like we have to let everyone know that there's gonna be more Stylish. Yes.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Step, step away, girlfriend.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Go for it. So I thought before we jump into today's episode, I wanted to let you know that every second Friday. So once a fortnight we are bringing you a new episode with Mads and head of Business development, Rhiannon Joyce, who loves to fill in for this podcast.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, no stranger to the community, she's our fourth chair.
Annika Joshi Smith
I feel like she should be here.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So on a Wednesday, you'll continue to hear us as normal. So your beauty, fashion, lifestyle, cleaning chat that you all love. But over there you'll get more conversation around brand and marketing. So Mads and Ray are both obviously our in house experts on all things brand marketing and business and they get a lot of questions about their careers and all those kinds of things. So that's what they're going to be covering on those episodes. And, and I've already kind of had a little preview of it and I feel like it's gonna be fantastic and I think you're gonna love it.
Annika Joshi Smith
I can't wait for this. Like, honestly, when you're in a room with Ri and Mads, it's just like infectious and you wanna sponge it all up. And I feel like the listeners are just gonna absolutely learn so much from this new extension.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
That's really kind, guys. We are really excited. For those of you who don't know, I actually met RE before I started Stylish. And yeah, if you have the displeasure of being stuck with us at a wine bar, it is like yap town. But we are. And I think so much of what we actually talk about at said wine bars is what our episodes will center around. But our first episode individually, Ray and I get a lot of questions about our own careers and career journeys. And a lot of those questions, both online and offline, people have come up to us at wine bars asking us, you know, for career advice and whatnot. So we thought it would actually be super helpful before we kind of get into covering everything from brand stories. Fashion and industry trends or interesting career stories that we'd kind of start off by like laying out our own careers and, you know, the relevant roles and lessons along the way. So hopefully there's some tidbits. I get a lot of people asking if I can go for a coffee with them and I'd love to say yes to all of them, but there are only so many hours in my day, so.
Annika Joshi Smith
Well, this will be the answer.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, grab a coffee and pop us in your ears. But hopefully everyone enjoys it and a little bit more stylish out in the world.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, well, feel free to let us know as well over on our socials at Stylish Pod if there's sponsors. Specific things you really want to hear from Mads and Ree or from the three of us that you're hearing your ears right now. Always feel free to drop us a line. We're always happy to hear from you and happy to have your suggestions. So really helps us to form the episodes 100%.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
We love a little listener input.
Annika Joshi Smith
We do. Look at us just growing.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I love it.
Annika Joshi Smith
I feel proud right now.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I feel bad that there's going to be every second week someone's going to have to listen to me on a Wednesday and a Friday. Should be so true.
Annika Joshi Smith
You've got fans, girls.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I'm one of them.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You're like, I am the one in on this.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Well, today we are doing a special myth based episode. A little bit like our rules episodes, I would say, similar structure. We've done a couple of these before and we know that you guys really enjoy them. So we thought why not do one about something that we all wear every single day, or at least I think a majority of us wearing every single day underwear. With the help of an array of experts, we are going to prove whether five common underwear myths are fact or fiction. We'll dive into those myths in a second. But before we do that, that. Do we have a swap?
Annika Joshi Smith
We sure do. And I thought, why not deliver something.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
She'S not even waiting for me to say. Who wants to go first?
Annika Joshi Smith
Guys, this is my number one time to shine.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You know what? No, no, that's all right.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
It's your. It's your place. You go.
Annika Joshi Smith
Hi, guys.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
We'll fight out. We'll fight out for two and three.
Annika Joshi Smith
So. Okay, question for you both. Do you wear period underwear?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yes. Love them.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I have. I don't. I'm trying.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, great. I'm here to help. I honestly, I hate, like, I loathe the idea of sleeping with the Tampon. And it's just, I don't know, but.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I was always told not to, you know, message you. I don't think you meant to do it.
Annika Joshi Smith
Maybe that's why I hate it because I have.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You can just so long as you get up and change it within.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Right, okay.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. Anyway, so I just hate it. And so I have tried almost every, I want to say period related brand when it comes to underwear on the market and I think I found by far my favorite and it's a kiwi brand called AWA awwa. And I honestly think these girls are doing such a great job in period care. The size range to start with is so inclusive. So they start at 3x small and go all the way up to 6xl which is actually a bigger range than skims. And they're all made from natural, organic and recycled fabric. So obviously we want like the best, most breathable we're down there. And I don't know why you can't get my crutch then.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
And your eyes diverted down to your Botswana.
Annika Joshi Smith
I know my Botswana, my little cooch. But anyway, we wanna make sure the cooch is always like, you know, protected. And these period proof undies, I wanna say maybe I'm the spokesperson for the brand, but they also support with postpartum and incontinence. So these are so many issues that obviously as women we're probably likely gonna go through at some point in our lives. You know when you have a little giggle in a little way. So everyone get behind AWA I. I live in their boxer brief and they are so comfy.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I wear modibody. But I also liked that you mentioned the three extra small as well for like younger girls that get their periods too that aren't quite in women's sizing, they can access them as well.
Annika Joshi Smith
Can I tell you guys a funny little story quickly?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
So when I first got my period, while this is a full TMI, I remember I was 13 and I was at school and mum was at work so dad had to come pick me up. And I will never forget we got home and he didn't know what to do with me and I was in my school uniform and he just put me in the show and I stood there in my uniform until my mum came home. And if period undies were on the market then, God, that would have saved my life because him trying to explain to me what a tampon was like, I would never forget.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I mean he probably didn't even know Mum didn't word him up. No.
Annika Joshi Smith
Poor guy. He just wasn't ready for it.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Oh, bless.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Were you? By the time.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Well, Mads, we need to get you on the period undies train, because I'm all about a period undie. I only wear them to bed.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Because I'm a tampon wearer during the day, but I love period undies.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
All I wear now.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay, well, you know, night is still young. Cho, what's your swap?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
My swap? In line with today's topic, being around underwear, I thought I would swap in my favorite bra.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, God.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I think this is probably the best.
Annika Joshi Smith
Bra I've ever owned.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
It's the Finelines attitude wireless plunge bra.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So it doesn't have any underwire, and it is just so comfortable. I honestly, I think I'm wearing it now. Yeah, I'm wearing it now. I absolutely love it. It just supports me so much. It fits me beautifully.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And I think that's the key part is knowing your bra size, which we're going to talk about a little bit today.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
But I love this bra. I absolutely love the brand. Fine lines. They do some great bras I recommend. Yeah, really, really great.
Annika Joshi Smith
I'm with you on fine lines. I know Nadia Bartel works a lot, and she does, like, all the beautiful Henny tanks. And you know how sometimes in you just want to have, like, the perfect kind of, like, coverage? I want to say, I feel like she always opts for a fine lines bra, and I've gotten behind one as well. And they really do sit so well. They give the girls a nice lift.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. Strapless bra is fantastic as well, which we'll talk about later.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I'll need to dress up.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
There's so many notes you need to make. I don't have a pen. I'll have to listen back. Don't worry. I always listen back. Okay, well, again, in the spirit of today's episode, so underwear wise, I am a religious chest ring wearer.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, hello, cheeky girl.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, well, cheeky, cheeky, cheeky cheeks. I don't know why. Cracking on to me. It's really starting to feel like it's a thing now, so tradition. Kate's giggling in the corner. We're all got the giggles today. Usually I am a skims or Calvin Klein G loyalist. Every time I say the word G or G string, I just think of Kath and Kim as well. It's just not a good thing. But recently I bought the invisible G string brief from Cotton on Body, which was like 13 bucks.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Which is much cheaper than Skims and Calvin Klein. And they are great. They wash well, they wear well. They're a bloody bargain. Anyway, I've got nothing else to add.
Annika Joshi Smith
I love that.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Just great.
Annika Joshi Smith
And they come in a range of colours. Yes, I love that too.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Better believe that I only wear black or nude.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I love the cotton on body Braziliano brief, which is not a G string, but it's also not like a full brief. Like you don't have full bum coverage. Yeah, but they're still very seamless. Like you can't see them under.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, nice.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, yeah, good. So if you hate a G string.
Annika Joshi Smith
Like me, I'm so into that. I'm gonna give those a try. Yeah, I love a sting.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I've seen that link.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You don't wanna give mine a try?
Annika Joshi Smith
I mean, you don't like, a G is really uncomfortable. Yes, that.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, really? Okay.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Oh, you're not one of those people that's gonna be like, oh, it's so comfortable. I have a piece of fabric up my ass all day. Surely you're not gonna be one of those people.
Annika Joshi Smith
I was like, where the hell's Joe going without.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
My mother has been firm in this lifetime about very few things. Free will was always exercised. But I honestly think when I was about 16 or 17, she was like, we cannot that kind of underwear with jeans. VPL is not it.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Really.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
VPL is visible panty line for those playing along.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I'm also seamless. Don't get me wrong.
Annika Joshi Smith
I've got to admit, I hate a visible panty line.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
She got me straight into a jeep at 16.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Go off mum.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Maybe I was 17. I don't know. I feel like her parenting's coming. She was really strict. Really strict.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So it was a weird move from her.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
It was clearly the VBL was bad enough.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Good honour.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay, enough about my mother's parenting techniques. And now we are on to True or false five underwear myths. I feel like we need a sound for this. Like myth busters or something.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
We should find.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah, we should.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yes.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You didn't want me to sing it and we just used that clip.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
We can.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah. Or we could find it. Okay. So even though it's something that we wear every day, no matter the weather or outfit. Oh, well, maybe it depends on the outfit. There's almost always at least one undergarment on our bodies and there's a lot we don't know or we think we know about our underwear. So we give a lot of consideration to how we clothe ourselves and we spend a lot of time on this Podcast talking about fashion, but we often leave what's underneath it all as an afterthought. So we thought we would cover underwear today and all of the myths associated. Everything from what's the healthiest fabric to wear down there? Could the type of bra you wear cause health issues down the track? There are a lot of myths and facts out there. So today, with the help of expert from Women's Health Melbourne and Intimate Ecology will be figuring out whether five common underwear myths are fact or fiction. So let's jump in. I'm quite excited. I am usually really wrong in a lot of these. Unless it was the fragrance episode. I was pretty good there.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
The cleaning one, I was like, cleaning.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
One is where I shone. But I was so keen to do this episode.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I really was pushing for the underwear discussion because I am a big believer that the underwear is very important in building an outfit. Like, we were just talking about visible panties. Like, those kind of things can really make or break an outfit, I feel. And can make you feel more comfortable and confident in your outfits too.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, agree.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So that takes us to myth one. Not wearing a bra causes breasts to sag prematurely. If you have breasts, you've undoubtedly heard this one before, that not wearing a bra causes them to sag prematurely. So I want to ask each of you, from your experience, true or false?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I think true.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
You reckon? Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Well, I don't know. I just figure gravity.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
It's like holding them there versus letting them go.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I don't know about you, but there's something to go.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
For me.
Annika Joshi Smith
And I feel like this is so stereotypical, but it's like, you know in movies when it's like, they always talk about maybe sometimes the older woman, they're like, when I was younger and my tits were up here, and then now they're down here.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
So I feel like I'm with Mads on this one. It has to be true.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. I feel like it's more around the aging rather than wearing the bra. But I do understand your viewpoint. Physics that, like.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Physics.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Physics.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I've brought physics in.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Having almost like a compression garment on would stop that skin from having pressure on it and dragging it down, which, if you have a bigger bust, obviously you're gonna experience more of that sagging because there's more weight in there.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah. And obviously these mama jugs need to be kept. You know, talking about yourself, that was obviously a joke.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
For anyone who's never seen me, they are not mama jug, let me tell you.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay, so Dr. Raelia Lu, who's an obstetrician and gynaecologist and the director of Women's Health Melbourne, says she's not aware of any scientific research proving that not wearing a bra causes them to sag prematurely. She says we all have different breast sizes, collagen types, and hormonal exposures, for example, due to pregnancy and breastfeeding experiences and genetics that influence our propensity to suffer from this problem. A Guardian article titled Does Wearing a Bra Make Breasts More or less Perky? Suggested that if wearing a bra does make a difference in how one's breasts act, it's probably a small one.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
The article continues, the two biggest factors in determining how much breasts droop are the weight of the breasts and the skin quality, which I feel like I just said, said Dr. Scott Bradley Glasberg, the former president of the Plastic Surgery foundation, the research arm of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. So I was onto something there. Are you guys regular bra wearers? Do you often go without?
Annika Joshi Smith
Why?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Why not?
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, well, I think as a member of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee, I just can go with or without. And I think as well, like, I honestly do actually really loathe underwire bras. I find them so uncomfortable. So unless for outfitting purposes is the only time that I'll actually be wearing an underwire to get the girls up and give them a little bit more like zhuzh, you know? But otherwise my go to. And this is like probably every single day is a fabric bra. And I wear skims. It's the Fits Everybody triangle bralette. And it is my ride all day. Like, even like on a long, long haul flight. I've got that on because you can sleep with it. It doesn't have any.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Are they just soft cups?
Annika Joshi Smith
So soft. Like, so soft.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
It's like a. It's like a wearing a training bra from, like being a teenager at your.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
This sounds like one I have from Intimo.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, my God.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I've got that one too. Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Is it similar?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yep.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Really similar. Both great.
Annika Joshi Smith
No closure at the back. So it's like, not like, you know, sometimes when you sit back.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
Digging into your back, the cloth, you don't get that. So these are my ride or die. I wear them all the time. Also, shout out to Dr. Raeliolo. She's actually my fertility specialist. And I love this woman. Like, she.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I've interviewed Raelia so many times. She's such a great person.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. So I need to actually report back.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And tell her you're in good hands.
Annika Joshi Smith
I'm in great hands.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You're looking after my fertility and my.
Annika Joshi Smith
Tits and my pooch.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Mads, do you wear a bra daily?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Absolutely. I just could not imagine leaving the house without anything.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
This is another rule that was set by your mum when she gave you a jeanstring.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
It was the same.
Annika Joshi Smith
A lacy bra.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Honestly. Yeah. I think now that I've really reconciled with that. Yeah. I'm a grandmother as well. I am a 7 out of 7 days a week regular wire bra wearer.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Interesting.
Annika Joshi Smith
I'm so interested.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So I was on the pill when I was younger and I was an 8D.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, you ready for this? Which I was a 10D.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, girl.
Annika Joshi Smith
I know. I had like, knockers.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Guys, wait. I was also an 8D when I was on the pill.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Look at her.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
What is that? What's happening?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So you obviously can't see us because this is a podcast, so it is an audio product. I am no longer an 8D.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And nor am I.
Annika Joshi Smith
Neither am I. I'm like, I don't even know what I am actually.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
But I've had a lot of, I guess, breast fluctuation in my life from being on the pill. I did six rounds of ivf, so I had a lot of like, boobs got really big, boobs got really small, even with like weight changes. And as I've like grown up, they've change lot. So I don't know what it is. I just always feel most comfortable in a wire bra. And I also feel like the shape has changed a little bit that I don't think for me, I love the look of them in say a like loose fitting tank without a bra on. So I almost always have. Well, I do. I always have a wire bra. Unless I'm like around home. Then I will wear a wireless little T shirt. Like the triangle bras from Intermo and Skims. I've probably got four or five of those. And whether it's like around the house or when I'm flying on a flight that's longer than like four hours.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. I love a little bralette or a crop.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So I have a couple from cotton on body and I also have some from Target as well. Just like soft fabric, just go over your head. Like they've got no clasp or anything at the back. And I wear them day to day if I'm not actually putting a proper outfit on, which is 99% of the time when I'm just at home and I'm in activewear.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So that's my Usual. But then if I'm wearing a proper outfit, I will always put a bra on with underwire. Well, this one that I have from Fine Lines. Yeah, you have an underwire. But I do have a lot of underwire bras, and I would typically gravitate towards that. But since I got this one, it's like I get sad when it's in.
Annika Joshi Smith
The wash. Yeah, yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
See, I usually wear a T shirt underwire bra, so I usually have an intimo one. Or the Calvin Klein T shirt bra that they do is a great one as well. But. But I think when we started this podcast, I was like, I would never wear anything sheer and I would never wear a mini skirt. Now look at me.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I know.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Girl is crazy. But if I want, like, a beautiful bra that I'm okay wearing with, like, a tank or a sheer shirt, there's a great store called Primary Intimates that do really beautiful curated edits of different brands. And they have gorgeous sort of like lace or detailed bras that I like that they'll be like a soft cut with a wire, which I don't mind doing.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, maybe I'll start there. Cause I've actually got a few new, like, opaque and sheer items that I don't know if my skims triangle will really cut it. You know, I need to make that look a bit more femme.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I have a couple of nice lacy ones from Cut the label as well.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I've never shopped them, but I've always heard great things.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I've got a nice brown lacy one that I can wear on course it is. Next, we are going to discuss our second myth. But that will be right after a word from today's sponsor.
Sponsor
Look, if you don't know the pure joy of changing phone cases and adding charms to your mobile phones, you obviously didn't grow up in the 2000s. Even then, our phones were the ultimate accessory. So we're fast forwarding a couple of decades, and yes, our phones are getting more tech, but they're also getting a lot more stylish. Case in point, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. It's Samsung's latest Z series foldable device, so, you know, it's chic. But the experience is elevated even further by Australia's best mobile network, Telstra. Aside from being gorged, there are two things that jump out for me with this device. First, it's incredibly innovative and it's super seamless to use, which we love.
Annika Joshi Smith
Up.
Sponsor
Also, it's been designed for our modern lifestyles. Whether you're constantly multitasking or you're a content creator having a play with it. It's definitely something you need to experience in person. So pencil in a trip to your local Telstra store to try it for yourself. Order the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 via Telstra and do so before September 8th to bag a Galaxy tablet worth $1049. Redeem via Samsung by 8th of October. Eligibility criteria and redemption limits apply. Thank you so much to Telstra and Samsung for making this episode of stylish possible.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay, myth number two. Drumroll, please. You're probably wearing the wrong bra size.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
This is gonna be true for sure.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Do you think you're wearing the correct bra size as you currently stand right now?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I know that I am because I've been fitted recently.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah, I know I'm absolutely not. Not like, this isn't from when I had 10 days, but it's definitely not like my accurate size now. I get like a bit of overhang.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Over here and just.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah, yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So according to Dr. Liu, because our bodies change a lot with time and life stages. So think pre puberty, after puberty, all the things we spoke about on the pill, off the pill, during pregnancy or fertility treatments while breastfeeding, weight changes and hormonal changes of perimenopause and menopause. Just a nice reminder to every female listener of all the things that we go through.
Annika Joshi Smith
We go through so much.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
It does make sense that our bra size changes over the time of our lives. So she believes it should be reassessed from time to time. And she also says that brand and country based size differences can complicate matters further. So great news. It's just a shit thud. So it's likely a lot of us are in fact wearing the wrong bra size. Jordi Morrison, a former lingerie buyer and employee at Women's Health Melbourne, estimates that 80% of people wear the wrong bra size. And it's almost always in a size that's too small. She says it's important to get fitted regularly and keep in mind that your core should support your breasts, not your shoulders. When in doubt, size down the back and size up the cup. No one is a 12B.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Right. Interesting.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Which is so funny because I feel like I have a lot of girlfriends who would describe themselves as a 12B.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I feel like I may be wearing it. No, I think I'm a C. Look out, you. I still dropped a cup size from.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Being on the pill. Have you been professionally fitted for a bra? And if so, how did you both Find the experience. And would you recommend doing it?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I would highly recommend getting fitted, especially if you've come off the pill, you've had babies, you've, you know, your weight's fluctuated, any of those factors, or even if you've just. Just aged over time and you feel like your boobs have just changed a little bit. Yeah, it's so valuable. And honestly, my bras are so much more comfortable because I'm actually in the right size. I don't have, like, gaping through the front or anything like that. I know that the band around the back is really well fitted as well. There's. It just feels so much nicer to be wearing this, the right size bra. My boobs did shrink quite a lot post pill, and so I was wearing the wrong size or a size too large when I went in and got fitted. I got fitted at Intimo.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yes.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And they just size me up, basically. They take one look at you and they're like, yep, you're going to be that size. Yeah, they've got quite the eye for it.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You see enough of them, I guess you get pretty good at it.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
But so comfortable. They also have, like, great bra options.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, I need to go and do this because I think the last time I was fitted was probably like 10 years ago, if not long. I know. And I think now because I wear fabric bras so often, I do think sometimes it can be easy to pick your size because it's, you know, like, I'm going for a small and there's not a whole lot to work with here. And I'm not trying to go for a lift or anything of the sort. I'm just literally going for comfort. So I feel like. Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And it's a bit different if you're not trying to fit your boob in a cup.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. And it kind of just sits. Like, I'll go between the triangles or the bralettes, and it's kind of like, you know, it's just serving the purpose of real comfort for me.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I think if you're wearing something that's in a size system, like a small, medium, large, it's very different versus a cup.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
Definitely not as specific. Okay. Yeah. Okay.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Mad.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I was fitted. I went to Intamo as well. Jo. So should have gone together. I was so off. I was wearing a back size bigger than what I should have been in a cup size bigger. So once I, like, put it on, I was like, oh, so weird. My T shirts aren't, like, gaping around the front anymore. Like, you know, everything Just sort of sat a bit better. Weirdly, they looked bigger in the right size bra than they did in the wrong one.
Annika Joshi Smith
Interesting.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Go figure.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, so I definitely need to do this, don't I?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I do have a very funny story about the first time that I went and got fitted and my mum took me to a department store.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
And it was the ugliest bra you have ever seen. And I cried through the entire department store from checkout all the way back to the car park, because I was just like, I've never felt so uncool and so unglamorous in my whole life. That's a lie. There's definitely been other times since then, but. Oh, my God. That is a core memory that I would really like to maybe work on with my psych. But I just remember mum being like, it's okay. I'll take you somewhere else. Now we know the size.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
It can be a very uncomfortable experience for a lot of people as well, and a very, like, revealing experience. So, like, go to somewhere where you feel like you can trust. Like, I fully believe in a more bespoke service for that kind of thing, because it is your body and everything. I have also had a fitting at Shescience. I think they have a store in. I believe it's in Hawthorne. And they specialize in a really wide variety of bra sizes. So if you have a much bigger bust and you worry that, you know, going somewhere they might not be able to cater to you, highly recommend them.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
They're great.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
And they also have a really wide range of, like, workout bras as well.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Great.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So I think that's particularly helpful for a bigger bust. Trying to find a workout bra that's going to provide them with enough support that they can do the exercise they want to do without their boobs getting in the way.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah. Fantastic.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Myth 3 Sleeping commando is always the healthiest option. And by that, I mean no underwear, so no bra or undies, but you can still be wearing pajamas. Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay. So have either.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Should we be really. Should we be really honest that we just had to rerecord that because we. We got it so wrong?
Annika Joshi Smith
I literally thought it meant sleeping in the nude. And I was like, guys, how often are we changing our sheets? And it sent the whole room.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I sleep nude really often.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Do you. Oh, I hate it. Do you hate sleeping nude? I feel so, like, exposed.
Annika Joshi Smith
Unless it's a Sunday and I've just, like, shaved my legs and put on fresh, clean sheets, I am not sleeping nude in my bed. Like, I am a pajama girly through and through. And commander.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, I like how you look Jo directly in the eyes.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
It really, really gave me a lot.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Am I interrupt you there?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
All right, so let's get into the expert because obviously we're, I think probably all of us have heard at some stage, sleeping commando is better. Air it out for your regions. Yeah, airing it out. So Dr. Moira Bradfield Strydum, a naturopath, women's health expert and the founder of Intimate Ecology, said there isn't really any research that proves explicitly or disproves this myth. It ultimately depends on the person, their symptoms, hygiene practices and climate. If you choose to wear undies to bed, I always recommend natural fibers that wick moisture. But I advocate for whatever works for you. Dr. Liu says that while wearing pyjamas and other nightwear to bed is fine, she'd recommend avoiding tighter underwear. All skin needs to breathe, and intimate skin is no different. The skin's primary function is as a protective barrier. But living layers of cells require oxygen to be healthy. They receive this via diffusion from the bloodstream and from the environment. We hopefully sleep around eight hours per night. It's the perfect time to be less constrained. It's a healthy habit and letting the vulva breathe is a good thing. So sleeping commando isn't necessarily the healthiest. But if you prefer to be clothed in bed, opt for looser fitting nightwear and natural fibres if you have to, is the advice from the experts. What do you guys wear to bed?
Annika Joshi Smith
I wear. They're actually these really beautiful modal PJs from Papa now. And they are slinky, breathable, and they're just kind of like really lightweight. I love them and I find. Actually I actually used to always wear flannelette PJs. Like, you know, when you're a little kid and you had your flannel sheep.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
How on earth to me is the texture of flannelette? Like when people talk about nails on a chalkboard, the feeling of flannel.
Annika Joshi Smith
Flannel. Oh, like, oh, my God.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I don't personally like flannelette sheets, guys.
Annika Joshi Smith
I find them.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I've got like a sensory issue.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay, okay.
Annika Joshi Smith
Well, anyway, modal. I did do happy little medium. They, I think offer like such comfort and then also at the same time, I still find like good warmth from them as well. Yeah. What do you wear?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I've got a favorite pair of winter jammies by homebody and they. I think it's a similar to a modal fabric. I Think it's called tinsel.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, yeah. Beautiful. It's very similar.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Really soft and, like, kind of stretchy, but still warm. And they're just so, like, cozy and comfy.
Annika Joshi Smith
You feel sleepy.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I love them. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So they're my favorite winter jammies, but I also have two 90s from a brand called Chill by Lily Brown. And they are the softest fabric. I swear by these 90s. I wear them all through summer. And there's also a brand called Piyama, I think they call it.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, Piyama.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Piyama.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
They do like cotton fabrics as well. I feel like they're nice and breathable for summer, too. But they do have, like, long sleeves and things as well for winter.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
When you're not nude. Mads, what are you wearing?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Glad you said it. I didn't have to say it again. My summer PJs are from a brand called Jasmine and Will. They're a Sydney brand. They do really beautiful, like, cotton PJs. They also do, like, a cotton shirt, like an oversized shirt, which I quite like. But in the winter, I do love my skims.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah, okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Just a skims. Also love my Qantas PJs. Oh, don't come for me. Don't come for me. Oh, she bought business class. No, no, use my points. Got an upgrade. Didn't spend my money.
Annika Joshi Smith
I'm not gonna lie. I. I have a lot of the Qantas pjs, and they're bloody comfy.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
They're so comfy.
Annika Joshi Smith
But the Jasmine and Will linen is also stunning. They're actually my summer options. I have, like, the little linen shorts and the shirts, and they're really breathable and lightweight, and I think they're actually cute enough. Like, if you wanted to just run up and get a coffee, like, you'd still look quite put together either.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I personally wouldn't leave the house in a pajama, but I do wear my dressing gown everywhere, so I can't really talk.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I mean, I've worn. My new.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
New's are very different.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Well, my new new pants from cotton on are the rip off of the skims pants.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So I've gone down in those before. I'm selective with the color. Right. Like, I'm not going in a stripe. Something that looks like a pj.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
But like a black with, like a little hoodie on.
Annika Joshi Smith
I've got a little khaki and a little white. And you're at the beach. Just need a little coffee, you know?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So coming back to the myth you wear undies to bed? Arnica?
Annika Joshi Smith
No.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Oh, you don't? No, I do not. So you just wear your jammies over the top?
Annika Joshi Smith
Just my jammies and I cooch brief.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yep. Nice. Love that.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You do not either when I'm not naked.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
No, no, I wear undies to bed.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Whoa.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. I wear Calvin Klein briefs to bed. They're like 90% cotton.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
So I think that's fine.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I would have thought you would have been a real air it out girl.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Really?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Oh, why do you say that? I don't know.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Maybe just cause of the cleaning talk and you're like, oh good, let it breathe.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, Yeah. I mean I can always try it. There's always time.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Why don't you do it and. Yeah. Come back to it.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Sure.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yep.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay. Well, I know you've spoken about our coochie's breathing. Is that what you're going with?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Coochie?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
What did I call?
Annika Joshi Smith
I don't know.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I called it a puswana. So I mean everything's up at the moment. What would you like?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Fanny.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay, but let's go. Let's go back to the other myth we were talking about about our bras. Any of never wear a bra to be.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, I would never. Honestly. Only if I am on a long haul flight. That's the time that I'll easily with my my little bralette on. That's the only time there's no way that I'm wearing it to bed.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, same. Although I recently flicked it off because we passed like 20 hours on the.
Annika Joshi Smith
Flight and I was like, hun, you were shaving your legs on that flight. I mean what else were we doing?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I just want to be really clear. My friend has a razor brand so I'm just trying my best to help her get some for the condom.
Annika Joshi Smith
She is a girl.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Fcking absolutely came at me for that. So get back in your box and if you're my mate and you've got a brand and just know you'll do anything, I will. No matter how high I am in the sky, I will do it to support. Okay, so no bras, no briefs. Two out of two. No bra, but briefs for one out of three.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Y.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Nice.

Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So myth number four is cotton is always best choice for underwear. Jo, I know you mentioned 90% cotton for bed. Are you traditionally wearing cotton briefs?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Not day to day, but I have heard this and I think this myth is true.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
What about you, Annika?
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay, so I live in the Uniqlo Airism seamless briefs. Sorry. The ultra seamless briefs. Their main composition is elastane and nylon, but I think the little gusset is 100% cotton. Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I'm really only ever concerned about the gusset, to speak my truth.
Annika Joshi Smith
Sorry, but that word gusset just because me there.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, it's really. It's taken a lot for me to keep a straight face. So if we could just stay focused.
Annika Joshi Smith
Refrain from the Ghazi.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
So Dr. Strydum says 100% cotton is a good natural option, but other fibres like bamboo can be even better in warmer climates. For wicking moisture. Oh God. Depressing me here and reducing odour, she recommends opting for natural fibres with high percentages and less than 6% elastane when you can, so you can avoid trapping any dampness. Dr. Liu echoes this advice and says that a breathable fabric like cotton, bamboo or hemp and a cut that does not rub or chafe is always best when it comes to the gusset. Well done. That extra layer of fabric your underwear has in the crotch area to catch discharge, sweat, et cetera. It's best to opt for a cotton gusset for breathability.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
A synthetic gusset can trap sweat bacteria and increase your risk of yeast and bacterial infections.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I believe most underwear has a cotton gusset already, but obviously it pays to just double check and make sure.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, I mean, I know my Calvin Klein GS are cotton, but my skims definitely are not. And I love a little lacy G too, so don't worry. Mum did not tell me to wear those at 16.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Sure.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
That is my decision as a 30 year old woman, but I do try and do like a cotton. I would say in like my. My day today.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, my cotton on Braziliano briefs are not cotton or bamboo. I wish they were. I'm not sure whether the gusset is cotton on that or not, but I know the majority of that composition of the cotton on Brasiliano is not cotton.
Annika Joshi Smith
Right. Okay.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Can they do a cotton version for Me though, if they're listening to this podcast, that'd be great. Yeah, everyone.
Annika Joshi Smith
And speak to your gusset. Sorry, Gussie.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I don't amazed in the last 48 hours, you are the third person who's brought up Uniqlos underneath underwear to me.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, my gosh. You guys okay? Uniqlo for your thermals, your long johns.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I'm looking these up right now.
Annika Joshi Smith
And their underwear, their socks, elite. Like, I bought their socks.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I know that. I've bought T shirts.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I'm a real.
Annika Joshi Smith
Go downstairs to their undergarments section because they've got so many good color options. Honestly, like, just go there.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Okay. Yeah. I was actually at a wine bar with a couple of friends, and her husband was like, no, they feel really soft. Feel them. And I was like, I don't feel comfortable feeling. I'm gonna need you to pop those away.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Are they truly seamless?
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah, they are. They are, honestly. Because my other biggest ick is when you the scene.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah. And then it's like, what's the point in having sex?
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. So even with, like, if you're going to the gym, like, if you're wearing your leggings or your flared nimble numbers, they. You can't see them through them. And I actually think James has their boxes as well.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I'm looking at that right now, and.
Annika Joshi Smith
I think they actually might be modal. And you know how Uniqlo always does, like, a little collab. I actually think he has, like, the Alexander Wayne collab. So he's a little bit funky monkey down there.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
These actually look good.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, I'm sure he would love to know. He's a bit funky monkey down there.
Annika Joshi Smith
Husband is so funky.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
These are cute.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. Great, right?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
Add to cart.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I might.
Annika Joshi Smith
Can we get like a Arnica 20 or something?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Arnica Funky 20.
Annika Joshi Smith
Arnica Funky 20.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Lots of colours too.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
What's our fifth myth?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Oh, sorry. I was carried away looking at the erasm briefs. Myth 5 Underwire bras can cause breast cancer. This myth is one that you might not hear as often these days, but when putting this episode together, our producer Kate and and Shameless Media's co founder Zara both told us that this was one that they had heard growing up that wearing the underwire bra can cause breast cancer. Thankfully, Dr. Liu says there's no credible research or evidence to support any links between bras and cancer. That's wearing a bra. Not wearing a bra. Underwire. No underwire. We also spoke to Dr. Lauren Wayne, an oncologist at Women's Health Melbourne. She agreed with Dr. Lu, telling us there is no scientific basis for the claim that underwire bras increase the risk of developing breast cancer. So where the hell did this myth come from? It can actually be traced back to a book called Dress to Kill that was released in 1995, where the authors, Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Gremayer claimed that breast cancer was more common in developed countries because most women wear bras, while women living in lower income countries wear bras less frequently. At the time, they were claiming that the compression from underwire bras blocked the lymphatic system, which is basically the body's drainage system. It helps our bodies fight disease and get rid of waste. But they believed that when underwire bras blocked the lymphatic system, the toxins wouldn't be able to exit the body and instead they'd be trapped in the breast, which could cause breast cancer. But all of our underwire bra wearing listeners can rest easy because Dr. Wayne tells us this is definitely a myth and it's definitely debunked. She says that the concern that underwire bras can promote cancer by impeding lymph flow and leading to toxin buildup is not supported by data. So that's a relief.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Thank God.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
But this is why I never wore my bra to be. Oh, yeah. I really believed this myth. Like, late teens, early 20s.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I hadn't heard of this before.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, my gosh. I feel like this myth has to be older than from 1995. Like, I feel like this was like, ingrained in us growing up. Like, that's why I'm the same. I would never wear a bra to bed.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Interesting.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I always thought it did damage.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I wonder if our listeners have heard the same thing because Kate and Zara both had heard that before. Yeah, I hadn't heard that myth, but, I mean, I don't wear a bra to bed because it'd be incredibly uncomfortable. So there's that.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
All right, it's time for opinions, please. And this is where you, our lovely listeners, write in with a problem or an issue that you want our opinion and help solving. So today's submission is from listener Akira in Brisbane. She says, stylish. Please help. Where are we buying our undies from these days? Feels like my undies drawer needs a refresh and I don't know where to start. And I'm sick of uncomfy styles. Love a time. Poor working mum. Xoxo. So going to be like Gossip Girl there, Akira. I love it. Okay, I know we've Touched on this kind of throughout the episode, but. Arnica.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yes.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Where are we going?
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay. Unicla. And I know I've said it so many times already today, but the Airism line is so great, I think as well. They're about $9.90 per piece, so I think it's a good, affordable option. Again, going back to the gusset, we want that 100% cotton. So there you go. And then I'm also buying a lot of skims. I honestly have different coverage. I've got. I actually do have jeans from there which are very comfy. I've got the boy shorts. I have got high waist, cheeky cut. You name it, I have got it. And I found that they're all super fantastic as well. A bit more expensive, but you can honestly get them on sale all the time. Like whenever I'm in the States, I go to a skin store and there's always a great little bundle deal as well.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Their online store go on sale a fair bit too. And same with David Jones. They'll do like a little mid year, end of year sample.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah. So those are the guys I swear by. How about you, Jojo?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Well, I've already mentioned my cotton on body Braziliano brief, which I really like because I don't like G strings. Like, I actually hate G strings. They're so uncomfortable. But if I had to wear one, like, I've got these pair of almost white nimble flares and I just can't wear any other undies with them. You can just. You can really see what's going on up in there. So I have a CSB G that is a C seamless G. But it's designed for activewear, obviously, and I actually do genuinely find that quite comfortable. I forget that I'm wearing it, which is very rare for me with a G string. I would normally be thinking about it all day.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Trying to pick out a wedgie.
Annika Joshi Smith
Love the earism. G's in as well.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay.
Annika Joshi Smith
They are great. All right. Yeah, give them a go.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah, I'm willing to thank you for that tip. But they're my undies I wear every day, daily. And then to bed, I wear the Calvin Klein briefs.
Annika Joshi Smith
Okay.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah, right, yeah, yeah. I feel like I've mentioned all of mine. I said my Calvin Klein, my skims, cotton. On the other great ones are the intimo cotton ones. I forgot about them. But their cotton jeans are actually great. They're a really comfy G, like with a jean, when you're like gonna be in them for, you know, the Full day.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Yeah.
Annika Joshi Smith
Have you guys tried Calvin Klein Seamless Range? That actually just came to mind. I have, yeah.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
That's why I've bought the. I buy those and I buy their cotton ones that have like the little Calvin Klein elastic band as well.
Annika Joshi Smith
They're cute. You would like those as well, Joe. They're seamless. Jeans are. Honestly, they're barely there. Like you forget you wear.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Okay.
Annika Joshi Smith
Yeah.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
My old housemate and best friend used to get the Victoria's Secret ones.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, sex ed.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I used to do her washing, so Alice knew what I need. She had. So that's what I recommend.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I'm not at all surprised you're watching, given what I know about you after these 18.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
That was. That was how we shared our responsibilities. But I.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Did she cook for you?
Annika Joshi Smith
Very good friend.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
She did cook for me. Yeah. She's a great cook.
Annika Joshi Smith
I don't know if I'd put my hand up to wash someone else's underwear.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
We're very good. We're very good friends. Okay. So, yeah, we've known each other since we born, so, yeah, it was fine. I had no issues with it.
Annika Joshi Smith
Is she your maid of us?
Joanna F.L. Fleming
I'm not having a bridal party.
Annika Joshi Smith
Oh, my God, that's right. It's me for off.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
You're the flower girl.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Flower girl, yes.
Annika Joshi Smith
And you're the pallbearer.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
No, I. Oh, my God.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
F Cking hope not. Oh, my God. What is that person called?
Annika Joshi Smith
The ring bearer.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
The pole bearer.
Joanna F.L. Fleming
Not the pole bearer.
Annika Joshi Smith
Guys, it's a Monday item movie.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe

Hello, it's Ruby here, host of Inherited, and you may know me as the producer of Everybody Has A Secret Too. My show, Inherited, explores the rules, rituals, relics and recipes we inherit that shape, who we are. And I have a very special guest joining me. You may know her from Stylish podcast, It's Madison Sullivan Thorpe.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Hi, Maddie. Hi, Ruby. What a treat. What an intro.
E
Oh, welcome to Inherited. MA really is the perfect opportunity for you guys to get to know Maddie on a new level. I want to talk about some of the things we touched on in our conversation.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Mads? Yeah.
E
What did you love about our chat today?
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
Oh, I think I probably said it best at the beginning of the episode when I said, you know, I share so much, but I'm quite private, and I think I'm quite protective of that privacy and peace. But it's been like a little love letter to my 20s, having turned 30 recently and being able to reflect on, you know, a pretty big decade in my life. So I really loved being able to kind of honour those 20s and chat about them with you and share a side to me that maybe those listening to Stylish will find very different to our usual pace.
E
Yes, I'm sure they will love it. Thank you so much for being so open with me, Mads. I really appreciate it. Here is a little snippet from our conversation.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
I was married, and I was very quickly unmarried married. And I'm not gonna go into all of that, but no one gets married thinking they're not gonna be married, right?
E
Yes.
Madison Sullivan Thorpe
And so I was married for less than a year. We were together for, God, maybe 11 or 12 years. And when I made the decision that my marriage was coming to an end, I rang five of my best girlfriends and they came over that night. And one had a sushi platter, one had sheet masks, one had champagne. I think one brought, like, tea and, like, my favorite snacks that were like, you want to drink green tea? We'll drink green and peppermint tea. You want to get absolutely wasted. We can get wasted, but you've got to eat. So, like, here's your favorite thing to eat. And they are the most incredible people in my life. I get emotional about nothing the way I do about my girlfriends, because I think that the year of. I call it just the year of, it was just the rebuild year. I was just an absolute shell of a human, and I didn't really like going out, and I don't say that like, to a club. I mean, like, out of my home.
E

Joanna F.L. Fleming [00:44]: "We thought why not do one about something that we all wear every single day... underwear."
The trio transitions into the main segment, focusing on five common underwear myths. They emphasize the importance of underwear in daily comfort and outfit building, aiming to clarify misconceptions with expert insights.
The discussion begins with the pervasive belief that foregoing a bra leads to premature sagging of breasts. Madison initially agrees with the notion, citing gravity as a factor. However, expert Dr. Raelia Lu from Women's Health Melbourne clarifies that there is no scientific evidence supporting this claim.
Notable Quotes:
Madison [12:26]: "I think true... Well, gravity."
Joanna F.L. Fleming [13:22]: "Not wearing a bra causes breasts to sag prematurely... it's more around the aging."
Dr. Lu explains that factors like breast size, collagen types, genetics, and life events (e.g., pregnancy, breastfeeding) play more significant roles in breast sagging than bra usage alone.
The hosts reveal that many women unknowingly wear incorrect bra sizes, often too small. Joanna emphasizes the importance of regular fittings, especially after life changes such as pregnancy or weight fluctuations. Dr. Raelia Lu advises reassessing bra size periodically, considering that sizing can vary across brands and countries.
Notable Quotes:
Joanna F.L. Fleming [22:24]: "I would highly recommend getting fitted... my bras are so much more comfortable because I'm actually in the right size."
Madison [22:27]: "I was wearing a back size bigger than what I should have been in a cup size bigger."
Annika shares her challenges with outdated bra sizes and underscores the necessity of professional fittings for better comfort and support.
The hosts explore whether sleeping without underwear is beneficial for intimate health. Annika humorously shares her preference for wearing period-proof underwear, highlighting brands like AWA that offer comfort and inclusivity. Dr. Moira Bradfield Strydum from Intimate Ecology notes that there is no definitive research proving that sleeping commando is universally healthier. Instead, the best choice depends on individual preferences, hygiene practices, and climate.
Notable Quotes:
Madison [26:04]: "A healthy habit and letting the vulva breathe is a good thing."
Annika [27:53]: "I wear... these really beautiful modal PJs from Papa now... really lightweight."
Dr. Lu adds that opting for breathable fabrics and looser-fitting nightwear can be advantageous if one chooses to wear underwear to bed.
The discussion shifts to fabric choices, particularly the belief that cotton is the superior material for underwear. While Dr. Strydum acknowledges that 100% cotton is beneficial, especially in warmer climates due to its moisture-wicking properties, she also suggests alternatives like bamboo for enhanced breathability and odor reduction. Dr. Liu agrees, recommending natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo, or hemp, coupled with cuts that prevent chafing.
Notable Quotes:
Joanna [33:05]: "Not day to day, but I have heard this and I think this myth is true."
Dr. Moira Bradfield Strydum: "Natural fibres with high percentages and less than 6% elastane when you can, so you can avoid trapping any dampness."
The hosts discuss various brands and their preferred fabrics, emphasizing the importance of the gusset's material in preventing infections.
The final myth addressed is the claim that wearing underwire bras increases the risk of breast cancer. Hosts reference the book Dress to Kill (1995), which originated this myth by suggesting that underwire bras impede the lymphatic system, leading to toxin buildup in the breasts. However, oncologist Dr. Lauren Wayne from Women's Health Melbourne debunks this claim, confirming that there is no scientific evidence linking underwire bras to breast cancer.
Notable Quotes:
Joanna F.L. Fleming [35:20]: "There's no credible research or evidence to support any links between bras and cancer."
Dr. Lauren Wayne: "There is no scientific basis for the claim that underwire bras increase the risk of developing breast cancer."
Madison expresses relief at the debunking of this myth, acknowledging that many listeners might have held this belief.
The hosts address a listener query from Akira in Brisbane, seeking advice on refreshing her underwear collection with comfortable styles. Annika and Joanna recommend several brands, including Uniqlo's Airism line for affordability and comfort, Skims for a variety of cuts and durability, and Calvin Klein for seamless options. They also discuss the importance of choosing styles that align with personal comfort preferences, such as avoiding G-strings if they're uncomfortable.
Notable Quotes:
Annika [39:29]: "Airism seamless briefs... they're about $9.90 per piece... a good, affordable option."
Joanna F.L. Fleming [40:18]: "I have a couple of nice lacy ones from Cut the Label as well."
Madison adds tips on sales and online deals, while the hosts share personal anecdotes about their favorite underwear choices, emphasizing the balance between comfort, style, and functionality.
