This is Matt and Myron, the Podcast.
Matt
It is Matt Myron here on a beautiful Sunday morning in Nashville, Tennessee, at CMA Fest at the. I guess they call this Fan X. Everything's an X now. And we are here. The event opens in about an hour, but we're here ready from now until 1pm Eastern on a beautiful day in the city that's got to be the most crowded in the United States. Nashville, Tennessee. We got my man Rocco sitting here guarding us in case the crowd overwhelms us. Myron Metcalf, it has been a fun time already at the centerpiece of country music here in Nashville at CMA Fest.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I didn't know what to expect at my first CMA Fest, but the crowds have been incredible, man.
Matt
How would you describe for people who aren't here? So this is literally like, this is country music, super bowl, country music, Mardi Gras, the streets of Nashville, which are always full of people. This is a massive humanity like none other. Think about the three days, the Saturday before Christmas at your local Walmart and then times it by a thousand. And that's what's here this week.
Myron Metcalf
It is. It is. I mean, listen, if you want to come down here and have fun, clearly there's every opportunity to do that. We were on Broadway having a good time, so, I mean, the city's putting on a party, man.
Matt
Well, let's start with you for a second.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
You have been fabulously entertaining to me since you've been here. First of all, you right now, you showed up at the show today with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots on, and then you discovered that you can't wear headphones over a cowboy hat. And you seemed a little sad about that.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I feel like I'm on a prank show because, like, I went to a boot place. You know what it's like to be a brother walking into a boot place, right? Like, everyone's kind of looking like, what's this dude up to? You know, I get the boots, I get the hat, and then I come up here, and I'm the only one who is dressed in cowboys.
Matt
I want to. For those of you that live across America, I want you to picture. So Myron shows up last night. He's got a new cowboy hat.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I.
Matt
Last night put on a cowboy hat. We went out on Broadway. We had a lot of fun. We went with our. Our producer, Evan. We had a great this morning, though. This is just a radio show. Like, this, isn't. We don't necessarily. I didn't necessarily expect you to play dress up. Yeah, you kind of look like black Ron Desantis right now. You got.
Myron Metcalf
You.
Matt
You got you. You got your jeans tucked into your boots. You got. You got. You like, you got your jeans tucked in your boots, which is. Which is a look. I'm not gonna lie to you. And then you got the cowboy hat, and. And, you know, it's. I love the boots, love the hat. I just. You're ready to rock.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know what's too much at this point. This is my first pair of cowboy boots, my first cowboy hat. I don't know the limits, and no one told me the limits. You all just let me out here doing whatever I wanted to do, and I blame you all for not telling me to tone it down.
Matt
I like it. I think you're fitting right in. So, Nashville, for people who don't know, at CMA Fest, this is where if you like country music at all, you come. I mean, just think about all the people that have played. You've had Dirks, Bentley. You've had Blake Shelton. You've had Rascal Flats. I mean, they've got Megan Maroney. I don't even know who all is playing tonight. I'm gonna go see my guy Zach top tonight. There are six different stages with music everywhere. All these bars are hopping. Last night, Myron and I watched the beginnings of a divorce, which I'm very much looking forward to telling everybody about. It really is kind of, for a certain segment of America, this is their Super Bowl. You were saying, however, it's a certain segment of America, Myron, that you don't know a whole lot about.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah, no, this is different, you know, being at CMA Fence. But I tell you what, people here know how to party. Like, it very compares to me to Atlanta, you know, like, is this, you know, Atlanta and Nashville kind of compares.
Matt
Wait a minute. I think you mean this is like white people's.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, a little bit. It feels that way. And it's just, you know, the crowds are incredible. I feel like when we were on Broadway, like, this is the kind of Event where you could meet the one, Right. You think this is the one. This is the kind of event where you could meet the one. But let me tell you something else. Let me tell you something else. This is also the kind of event where you could lose the one.
Matt
Oh, that's true.
Myron Metcalf
You know what I mean? So, like, it can go both ways in a place.
Matt
I'm going to go ahead and tell you because everybody listening, if you're about to get married, your fiance is going to say, hey, me and my girls are going to have our bachelorette party in Nashville.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know.
Matt
Just say no. Either just say no or just say, you know what, we're going to take a one week break. Because I'm just going, you know, I'm just going to tell you, if your girlfriend comes here for a bachelorette party, she is making out with another guy. He's shaking his head. It is happening. I watched it happen. We did like three times last night. I literally watched it happen. I watched Brides to Be just pulling random people over and kissing them. That doesn't happen anywhere else. Like, it is a. It's. It has become. I've been coming to Nashville for 50, 45 years. It has become like. Yeah, just a different thing.
Myron Metcalf
I had about three moments last night where I just looked at someone else in the.
Matt
And made out.
Myron Metcalf
No, just looked at someone. And we were both trying to figure out exactly what was going on. Like, it just felt surreal at times. Like some of the scenes we saw.
Matt
All right, so, Rocco, I'm going to tell you a story about yesterday. All right, so we walk into this bar yesterday, Myron and I and Evan, we walk in and I see a guy. You know, sometimes you can see people, and you go, there's a lot happening with that guy. Like, sometimes you can just see people. And you go, this dude's got a lot going on.
Myron Metcalf
You pointed him out.
Matt
I point him out immediately. He had a lot of hair. He was wearing, like glasses with purple tint.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
He had on a Hawaiian shirt that wasn't even buttoned. So he just had chest going on. And you just said, lots going to happen with this guy.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
All of a sudden, a woman walks over and this wasn't even an attractive man. This is why you should come to Nashville. This isn't even a good looking dude. Woman comes over, pulls him over and just starts kissing him. And he looks surprised. He looked as surprised as I was a lot. He was like, what is happening here? Then all of a sudden we see a lot of drama.
Myron Metcalf
Yep.
Matt
We find out the woman that pulled the guy over to kiss him, her husband is at the bar getting a drink.
Myron Metcalf
Yep.
Matt
This is her husband is at the bar getting a drink. Her friend sees her making out with a stranger with her husband 20ft away. I didn't think this was unreasonable of her. Friend looked at him, looked at her and said, what are you doing?
Myron Metcalf
Tried to stop him.
Matt
Your husband's right over there.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Try to stop him.
Matt
Feels like that was a fair thing to ask. Right?
Myron Metcalf
I was reasonable.
Matt
Feels like it was completely fair. She then gets mad at her friend and she's like, I'm gonna live my life.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, it was.
Matt
She is gonna live her life. Husband comes back. Now everyone knows what's happened except him.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Including, by the way, me.
Myron Metcalf
My knew it was awkward. We didn't know what to do. I feel bad for this guy.
Matt
I have just watched your wife make out with another guy and you were standing right there. Yeah. But I didn't feel like it was up to me to tell them.
Myron Metcalf
You get involved. Yeah. You won't get involved.
Matt
This is one of those things. I didn't feel like I needed to get involved. Byron and I are going, what is happening right now? Then husband walks over with a big smile. He's got these drinks and everybody's. Everybody, like, is looking away from him.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Nobody told.
Matt
Nobody wants to tell him. Then friend says, I can't be here if you're gonna do this.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Storms off.
Myron Metcalf
Friend breakup, friends out.
Matt
So the husband looks at the woman.
Myron Metcalf
Is like, what does that.
Matt
Why? Why is she mad at you? And we all know why.
Myron Metcalf
She's. Everybody know. Yeah.
Matt
Except husband. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Everybody's turning away. Like nobody wants to look him in the eye.
Matt
So then wife looks at husband and says, boot scooting boogie. That's what he said. No. Wife looks at husband and goes, I'm really sorry.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
But he still doesn't know what she has to be sorry about. So then he just. She has to look at him and go, I kind of just made out with another guy.
Myron Metcalf
And then they.
Matt
And then they storm off.
Myron Metcalf
They storm off. You know, it made me think that, you know, college football coaches have a get back coach. You know, like if you. If you go past the line, there's a coach who will hold you back. Right. Like that's his only job. I think if you have a party in Nashville, everybody needs a get back person. Like someone whose only job is to stop you from ruining everything.
Matt
But to be fair to the friend, I don't think she could have imagined if you're like, I'm going out with my girl and her husband, that one of her jobs is going to be to keep her girl from making out with somebody that's not her husband.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think she knew. I think she was. I think she was the get back coach and was trying to be the get back coach. You know, sometimes the coaches goes off and there's nothing you can do. They're on the field in the referee's face. I think she was point.
Matt
Kirby Smart is yelling so much, he's.
Myron Metcalf
On the field, you can't do anything. It is his.
Matt
His hair's flopping, his visors coming off. There's nothing you can do.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Well, I just want to say, if those people are listening, I hope it worked out.
Myron Metcalf
That's a man.
Matt
I hope it worked out.
Myron Metcalf
People make mistakes.
Matt
You know, sometimes a woman might just see a really unattractive man at a bar and say, I got to kiss him right now. I don't think they had had a conversation before they did it. That's what happens. My Metcalf at the CMA fest here in Nashville.
Myron Metcalf
I'm a guest, so I stayed out of it. You know, I said, you know, if this is just what they do in Nashvill.
Matt
Have you felt welcomed here? Have you felt welcomed because you were. You were. You've been nervous the last few weeks that you didn't know how you fit in.
Myron Metcalf
I always tell you this, and you. You kind of always push back on it. My greatest asset is that I'm likable. Like my. My likability rating is very high.
Matt
And humble. Humble.
Myron Metcalf
No, it's just. Listen, I don't think I can teach it, but it's something I've had, you know, over the course of my life. And I think it played out here, man, because everyone's been welcoming and friendly. I'm taking pictures with random people. You know, it's been. It's been fun.
Matt
When did that happen? I didn't see you take.
Myron Metcalf
You did with fur guy. No, fur guy.
Matt
Yeah, we had. Yeah, well, you did. Myron took a picture with one person and three minutes later, that guy got kicked out of the bar because he was wearing fur with nothing on underneath it, which is a sign.
Myron Metcalf
Now add the detail. The only other black dude in the bar was wearing fur with nothing underneath. And then he got kicked out like three minutes later. It was a bad look in general, but I also kind of had to distance myself. You know, it was. It was a lot going on.
Matt
Well, we are at fan. It's called Fan X. Is that right?
Myron Metcalf
Fan Fair X.
Matt
Fan X the return Fanfare X. And this is a cool place in and of itself. You can buy western gear. I saw they have rebuild McIntyre ponytails. There's there are going to be stages playing with music and we are up here at the ESPN ESPN Air Airstream studio Stream studios which is a beautiful thing. This is the I've worked at ESPN folks for this is gonna be my eighth year. This is the first time I've ever seen my name on anything right here. This is very exciting.
Myron Metcalf
Big deal.
Matt
I've never seen my name on any official piece of anything and it is here today, Myron. So I'm very excited.
Myron Metcalf
This is fun, man. It's a big deal. Big event. You can ride a mechanical bull right over there. You can.
Matt
I want to see you do it.
Myron Metcalf
No, I'm not. I'll.
Matt
I want to see you do that. We're also going to have Walker Hayes. He's fancy like Applebee's and he will be here to teach Myron how to wear his cowboy hat. Also Golden Tate, former NFL receiver who also will be stopping by. Who knows what else will happen. It is Sunday Morning with Matt Myron live from CMA Fest here in Nashville.
Myron Metcalf

Myron was looking for Shaboozi all night last night. He was trying to find his kindred soul. We did hear a very country white guy try to sing this song. Doesn't sound exactly the same. Myron, don't you think if he went to the the country ver the real country version of this, it was a good attempt.
Myron Metcalf
I probably could have hopped on stage, maybe helped a little.
Matt
Gonna take me a double shot of whiskey. It didn't exactly do the same.
Myron Metcalf
He's gonna be able to play this song for 50 years though. Like Shabuzzi will be able to do this.
Matt
He'll be at CMA Fest in 2060 doing the same thing. Sunday morning. Progressive Insurance. It's easy to bundle your home and car insurance@progressive.com.
Myron Metcalf
What are we thinking about?
Matt
I'm trying to think but nothing happens.
Myron Metcalf
Nothing happens. Time to find out. This is off the top. Flash off the top with Matt and Myron.
Matt
It is off the top here. And even though CMA Fest is going on and we have a ton of country music, there's other things including game two of the NBA finals. Tonight is on ESPN radio coverage begins at 7 7:30 Eastern. The never say die Indiana Pacers man after should have lost an early game to Milwaukee came back and one should have lost in an early game to the Knicks came back and won and now should have lost Game 1 to the Thunder came back and won. At some point I think you got to give the Pacers credit. You were still blaming the Thunder for blowing it. But if you do this enough, don't the Pacers be. Aren't they the ones that deserve the credit?
Myron Metcalf
I give the Pacers credit for, you know, their fight at the end of games games that it appears that they've lost. But at the same time if you have a double digit lead, I look at the team that lost that more than the team that wanted the Knicks were in the same situation. The Patriots came back. Obviously the Thunder in game one on their home floor found a way to squander that game and now all the pressures on them. I think going into game two it.
Matt
Had the exact same makeup of the Knicks game because you had to have the exact same elements. You had to have missed free throws. In this. In this case, it was. There were what, two of them down the stretch for the Thunder. You had to have a turnover, right? You had to have an open three. They that both times the Thunder had a wide open three, the Knicks had a wide open three. They miss it. And in both games, dudes just said, decide to make every single shot. You know, you. Naismith did it in the. In the game against the Knicks. Nimhard did it in the last game. It is amazing. And then Halliburton, who plays terribly the entire game, last play, nails it in case of Wallace's face.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, he might be, you know, one of the more clutch guys we've ever seen.
Matt
Is he getting into Reggie Miller territory? Are you ready to use that name? I mean, maybe the most clutch player disproportionate to his talent in NBA history. Are you ready to do that?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, if you believe the numbers, you know, he's already put himself in that category in terms of playoffs. Fourth quarter with five seconds to play or less game tying shot or go ahead shot. He's got five of those. Reggie Miller had five of them. LeBron has eight. I mean, he's already putting himself in that category with some of the great clutch players of all time. At the same time, I just don't think you can play this way against OKC the rest of this series. Like, you can't be down late and just assume everything's going to go.
Matt
What everybody said about the Knicks.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, but this is a different test. OKC won the Western Conference by 16 games, 16 games ahead of the Houston Rockets. They're a better team. OKC could win every game going forward. And that wouldn't surprise me at all.
Matt
It wouldn't. Me either. But they didn't win this one. And I do think if you were going to make this a series, I always believe for the big underdog, if you're going to make a series, you got to win the first one.
Myron Metcalf
Right?
Matt
Because the first one is your best chance. They did. And if you're Indiana, you can sit there and say, look, we had 19 turnovers in the first half, 19 turnovers in the first half, and still found a way to win the game. If you. All you got to do is take care of the ball. Second half, they only had five. And then you can say, our best player didn't even particularly play well and we won. I do think if, for Indiana, not only do you win game one, you've got to think to yourself, if we play our normal game, this is a series where we're as good as they are.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah. No, no, no. I think Indiana put themselves in this series and I think Indiana now has a real shot after what they did. It just to me, if you look at these teams on paper, OKC is the better team. But Indiana has just found a way in those difficult moments to just be the better team when it matters, man. And now you have a young OKC team where you're going. Okay, who steps up? You know, Chet Holger didn't play well. Jalen Williams had his struggles. SGA is always great, but they need more guys to win a championship beyond sga.
Matt
So here's why. You have to go to your local ESPN bet or to your local bookie or whatever it is you do and pick the Thunder. Since 2021, home teams that lose game one are 21 and seven against the spread in game two.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, wow, that's amazing. That's amazing.
Matt
So I mean, this is a. I mean.
Myron Metcalf
So that was a fluke, basically.
Matt
Well, I'm not saying it's a fluke, but even in the Knicks series, the Knicks came back in one game too. I mean, I think game two, in a series like this, the Thunder have to win. Yeah, Thunder have to win. But I also think they're gonna. I. If I were to predict, I think the Thunder win by 25 points tonight, I mean, I think it's an absolute route going in tonight.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think they went a lopsided game. You know, you look at what happened.
Matt
With the Lakers, nevermind, Knicks lost, which is what I was going to say, but go ahead. They won game three.
Myron Metcalf
You look at what the Lakers did, I believe it's 2001, the Allen Iverson game, where Allen Iverson, I think scores 41 points on 42 field goal attempts. The step over game on Tyron.
Matt
But in that game, you knew the Sixers had given their best shot and won. I think what's different about this, the Pacers did not even play well. And one, I mean, that has got to be even more incurred with the Sixers in that series, you kind of felt like they threw everything they had and maybe that's the only one they get. I think there's still a lot more for the Pacers to be able to do.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, they could avoid 19 Turbos turnovers in the first half, but I mean, OKC did a lot of that. I think the similarity is that the Lakers weren't intimidated by that. They bounced back, knew they were the better team and then they won the next four games. OKC could do the same thing. If you tell me OKC is slightly better than they were, they're gonna win this game and maybe by double digits.
Matt
My concern for okc. My concern for OKC is that Shea Gilgis, Alexander was great, but down the stretch it felt like a lot of the secondary guys, yeah, they kind of puckered up a little bit. Whereas I feel like Indiana's secondary guys get better. Better as they go. Look at Seokam, N Ne Smith, Nim hard. I feel like they get better. I feel like Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren and some of those guys, they just look like this was their first time in a situation like this. I do. They've got to get. That's got to be. Shay was great, but I thought the other guys struggled down the stretch.
Myron Metcalf
Well, they're young guys, right? With. Okay, see, I think the difference is Indiana's needed eight guys, nine guys in.
Matt
Games through the whole playoffs. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
So TJ McConnell comes in, he's your leading scorer in the first half. You mentioned Naismith, you mentioned Nemhardt. All their reserve guys have been in a situation where they had to help the Pacers win. OKC hasn't been in that spot. OKC had 61 double digit wins in the regular season. 61. So they never really had a bunch of adversity. They had the highest margin of victory since the 71, 72 Lakers. So they were just destroying everybody they faced. They faced adversity in Game 1. They didn't really know how to respond to that.
Matt
You following every game of the NBA Finals. You can catch an expanded game night postgame show. They go till 2am they're like the bars on Broadway down here. They'll go until 2am and maybe even longer if need to. Join Jonathan Zaslow, 10 year NBA veteran Ryan Hollins and ESPN senior NBA writer Andre Snellings following game two on ESPN radio and the ESPN Apple. I don't know if you've noticed this, Myron, but there's a huge butt next to us. Like a big massive. Well, actually my mother would say rear end. There's a big massive rear end here for dude wipes the best clean pants down. I don't know what that means. Best clean pants down. But that. You ever use the. The dude wipes.
Myron Metcalf
I know what they were till. Till I got here. Like better than tissue. I mean it's just better than.
Matt
I mean, I think they would hope so. I think it's a little better than Tish. We don't need to go. It's Sunday morning. People on their way to church. We don't need to go into the details. I'm just saying there is a. What would you call that 20 foot high inflatable butt next to us?
Myron Metcalf
Sir Mix A lot would be proud of us.
Matt
Sir Mix a lot definitely would. Big changes are coming to college sports. Like revolutionary changes. We'll talk about it next and more here at CMA Fest. I'm Matt Myron.

Live from CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee, this is Matt and Myron on ESPN Radio.
Matt
And on the ESPN app Myron here on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. During the break. Oh, I do love. I do love this song. You better kiss me because you're gonna miss me when I'm gone. This is country music during the break here at CMA Fan Fest X. They were playing the Cupid Shuffle.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Which is not country music that I would define as country music, but I enjoyed it because I like doing. I like songs where they tell you how to dance while you're dancing. So I was doing some Cupid Shuffle. Okay. Get a little water about that.
Myron Metcalf
All right. Where's.
Matt
Where are you okay? You need a break?
Myron Metcalf
I'm good. Where's the country music.
Matt
It is interesting that in Nashville, it's a lot less country music than it used to be. You know, now there's a lot of, like, blink. We heard Blink 182 at three different bars last night. It's a different. It's not quite as. Should have been a cowboy maybe as it used to be back in the day.
Myron Metcalf
Is that just the whole country music scene is at the city. What is that?
Matt
I think country music has expanded. It's what it thinks it is to include basically any kind of music. But it's, you know, now all these bars in Nashville are named after. After stars. You got, you know, Blake Shelton, Jelly Roll, Garth Brooks, Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen. All the board bars are named after people. Do you like that?
Myron Metcalf
It's scenic, man. Like, it's. It's unlike anything I've seen in terms of just like the bar culture. It's almost like little New Orleans, little Vegas, little Memphis, Atlanta. So it's. It's a vibe.
Matt
They were just telling us right over here next to us at a booth, you can hold adoptable puppies.
Myron Metcalf
That's amazing.
Matt
It's a booth. You could just walk up and pick up a. A dog and hold it.
Myron Metcalf
Amazing.
Matt
That is not my kind of thing. I would actually pay them to not make me hold those adoptable puppies would do you well.
Myron Metcalf
What, you're against dogs?
Matt
Not against them. They're just not my friends. They're. They're fine. They can do their own thing. I appreciate their right to exist. I just don't want to hold them.
Myron Metcalf
Were you, like, what happened that turned you again?
Matt
It's just dogs and children. It's just a messy thing. I kind of like. I prefer, like, don't get me wrong, I want them to exist. I just don't want to be part of it, if that's okay.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. So it's hard for you to be a human, basically, Is that what you're saying?
Matt
We're human. I like.
Myron Metcalf
You sound like somebody who just got to Earth. That's how you talk sometimes. Like you just showed up to earth on Monday. Say, like, man, what are all these little people running around and these dogs.
Matt
I like. I think we put people become full size. It's easier to deal with them than when they're little.
Myron Metcalf
Report back to Mars, you know.
Matt
Yeah. All right, so I have a question for the callers. We like to talk to you. I want you to call 8. 8, 8. Say ESPN. We have to do. We have to do a question. Myron, right now. I Need to give you a little outfit thing.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Matt
All right. So you've got your jeans on, you got new boots. How long you had these boots?
Myron Metcalf
These 48 hours.
Matt
So you bought 48 hours?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Yeah.
Matt
Now you have your jeans tucked in to your boots. Yeah. Now I am sort of of the opinion that you should have your jeans over your boots.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Matt
They're having them tucked in your boots. The only person I've ever seen do that was Ron DeSantis. And I'm not saying he was wrong. I'm just saying, like, I don't. I don't see that a lot. I think most country singers kind of. They put their jeans over their boots. Maybe I'm wrong. 888 say ESPN. But you kind of look like a person who's worried about, like, walking through a mud puddle.
Myron Metcalf
You know who I look like? I look like a guy who has friends who didn't tell him how to dress the CMA festival. A guy who said, go get the boots, get the hat, and just tell him all the other stuff.
Matt
Should he have the jeans pulled out of the boots? Yes. So why don't we go ahead and pull those out? Can we go ahead and pull out the pants out of the boots?
Myron Metcalf
But I kind of like it like this, man.
Matt
You like that look?
Myron Metcalf
I do. It feels like me. And then there was some other brothers.
Matt
She's shaking her head. There was.
Myron Metcalf
Wait, there were some brothers at security who saw it and they were like, hey, man, I like that. Maybe we shouldn't be judging them. Maybe I need an outside opinion, man. To like.
Matt
All right, 888 say ESPN. Those of you that wear cowboy boots regularly, do put the pants over them or do you tuck them in?
Myron Metcalf
Can I tell you something else? It took me so long to get these boots on. I didn't know it was that hard to get. I was in my hotel room, honestly about to cancel and be like, I'll meet you all at the event. Because I had one boot. It was like a five minute struggle. And I'm like, listen, I don't know what's happening here, but maybe these boots aren't for me.
Matt
Have you ever heard. Again, this is a little off topic, but have you ever heard when you have new boots, how to break them in? Do you know this the trick? No. Okay, so boots, especially if you wear them at the toe, they'll narrow. So here's what you do. This is a true story. Put your Wear two pairs of socks, okay? Then take like a plastic bag, like a Walmart bag. Or a Target bag and put them. Put it over your socks. Okay, do you got me so far? You got your socks, you got a Walmart bag over. Then you take the Walmart bag and you get it wet. All right? Not. Not really wet, but just, like, take. And now your Walmart bag's a little wet. Then you do that. Then you put your boot on, and you turn on a hair dryer, and you blow it on the area where it's too tight, and it will expand the boot out a little bit to fit your toe. Am I right, my man? He look. That guy looks like he knows, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, he knows.
Matt
That's what you do. So, again, socks.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
This is for all of you that come to Nashville for your bachelorette party. Socks, plastic bag, get a little wet, put it in the boot. Hair dryer on that area. It'll expand it, make it work.
Myron Metcalf
That sounds like incredible advice that I could have used two days ago. See, my problem is you're dropping all these knowledge today. And you said nothing up until this point. I said, I'm gonna go all out. You said, cool. Get the boots, get the hat, do your thing. Right? And then I show up, and you're like, wow, you're trying to do too much cowboy. Like, it's not fair, man.
Matt
I understand.
Myron Metcalf
You should have given me a manual before.
Matt
Shout out to my Kentucky fan. Already here. This place hasn't even opened yet, and he has found his way inside. Well, he is a Kentucky fan, which means he cares about college sports. So let's talk about what happened this week. Anytime you start mixing law and sports, it starts to get complicated, but I'll give it the easiest way it can. The House settlement has been approved by the judge, which means the rules that govern college sports, at least for now, include $20.5 million that each university has the ability to give to its athletes. They can split it amongst the sports the way they want, and if they want to, $20 million. For the first time ever, the NCAA is sanctioning the payment of players. After 100 years of saying amateurism. This happened on Friday night. What do you make of it? It's going to completely change the sport.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. First off, shout out to Ed o' Bannon because no one has taken more heat for what he was trying to do almost 20 years ago to get compensation for athletes. Now we're here in this moment, I think it's a huge game changer in that now the schools, to me, have a lot more power. You have coaches who I think are a lot More influential now that the money's coming out of the school budget. But the biggest thing is going to be all of the outside money that's going to flow in the schools that figure it out. The schools that know how to work with their boosters to make sure guys are getting money above this cap. They're going to win big. And I think that, to me is the next step. Fine, there's $20 million. Who goes over that and how? Because you're not going to stop Ohio State and Alabama and all those other schools from paying more than the cat.
Matt
I think that's important, but I actually think Ed would take a step back before we even get to that. This is a revolutionary change for college sports. I mean, like, college sports has gone from this idea that, like, it's a student based thing to this is professional sports now. I mean, they are going to be giving. Most football programs are going to be giving from the university $14 million a year to their football program. I also think, and we talked about this last night, schools are going to have to decide, what do you want to be good at?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Because you're not going to be able to be good at everything. I had someone tell me the other day, a university administrator, you're going to have to pick three sports to be good at.
Myron Metcalf
That makes sense.
Matt
Okay. Football is almost certainly going to be one of them because it's the biggest money generator. So let's say football is one. Then every university is gonna have to say, okay, what are the other two sports I'm gonna focus on? My man, here's a Kentucky fan. Kentucky basketball. We're clearly gonna be one. But then at Kentucky, are you gonna pick women's basketball? Are you gonna pick baseball? Are you gonna pick volleyball? Are you gonna pick gymnastics? Are you gonna. Those are all sports over the years Kentucky's been good at. Which one are you gonna pick? LSU. Think about LSU.
Myron Metcalf
Some challenges there.
Matt
LSU's got Kim Mulkey.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
With the women's team. They've got a baseball team that has won the College World Series. They've got a gymnastics team that has produced people that literally are viral celebrities. They've got a men's basketball team that Shaq played at at one point. They're going to have to choose which of these sports do we want to be good at. And Myron, it's going to be interesting. Some schools are probably just going to have to tell programs, you don't get any money. Good luck.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Well, I saw that a lot of the non revenue sports I think track and gymnastics, a bunch of them abandoned together because they're concerned about what happens to their sports.
Matt
But maybe some school just says, I'm going to be really good at track and we're going to be better than everybody at track. They might do that.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I don't know how you sort of level that playing field. I mean, we just watched the college, I mean the college softball championship and you had Texas Tech, they had a million dollar player, the first million dollar athlete in softball. What happens to a sport like that?
Matt
So what about like Oklahoma? Oklahoma before this year had won five straight softball titles. Maybe they decide one of our three sports will be Oklahoma, or, excuse me, will be softball. I think it's going to be fascinating because if you want to be good at a sport besides football, you're going to have to put your money into it. And there will be schools that say, like, let's take Vanderbilt for a second. Vanderbilt's won a college World Series in baseball. Right. They used to be really good at women's basketball. Maybe they just say, you know what? We throw in the towel at men's basketball, we're just gonna, we're just gonna play these. And you know what? We'll lose every year. Men's, I don't know what they're gonna do, but schools are going to have. Their coaches are gonna start having to fight with each other. Think about Auburn for a second. Hugh Freeze and Bruce Pearl are gonna be fighting over that $20 million. Bruce Pearl, who gets more? And I think that is going to be fascinating to watch.
Myron Metcalf
It puts coaches in a whole different position. I mean, the thing about NIL is you had all this outside money that was poured in. The boosters had so much power over that stretch. How do you keep the boosters in a position where they can influence performance, influence your roster? I mean, that's going to be the big question. I also think schools are now a business. So now I think you're going to see a lot more teams go from hiring someone with a basketball attitude, let's say to someone with a finance background, business background. Because that's going to be the biggest thing is how do you assign value, Matt, to a guy that, okay, he's worth a hundred thousand? How do you know that a guy's worth 200,000? How do you know the days of.
Matt
Picking his athletic director, Joe Bob the linebacker are over. Like you got.
Myron Metcalf
What did Joe Bob do?
Matt
Man, Joe Bob was running.
Myron Metcalf
Joe Bob won three SEC titles.
Matt
Joe Bob better go find a job because now you need somebody who understands business to run the ad. There's no reason to have a Joe Bob and I think the Joe Bob's are going to be the ones hurt. This is a business now and it certainly got to be one starting on Friday. 888 say ESPN should Myron Tuck his jeans in or not? The answer is clearly not, but we will figure it out Sunday. Sunday headlines all here at Fan Fest X at the CMA Fest.

Live from CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee. This is Matt and Myron on ESPN.
Matt
Radio and on the ESPN app. Now this is a country song. She'll learn to rope and ride here with Matt and Myron on Sunday morning. I was wearing my six shooter riding my pony on a cattle drive. That's what Myron thinks he's doing with his boots with his jeans tucked into his boots. We got full phone lines of people telling Myron whether or not they should do it. I'll tell you what, let's hold off on the headlines for a second. Is that all right? Can we do the headlines a little bit later? It's we can tune into tonight for game two of the NBA Finals presented by Indeed. Coverage begins at 7:30 Eastern on ESPN radio on the ESPN app. I'm gonna go through some of these calls. These are people saying whether or not Myron should take this. Look where he's got his jeans tucked into his boots like a guy who is never one time worn cowboy boots.
Myron Metcalf
First time.
Matt
Let's go to David in Kentucky. David, since you're in Kentucky. I'll let you go first. What should Myron do? He should wear the pants outside the boots.
Myron Metcalf
Why? Why is that?
Matt
He'll look like a city slicker trying to be a cowboy. That's what he does.
Myron Metcalf
But isn't that what I am, though, Rocco?
Matt
He's looking like a city slicker. We don't need a city slicker down here.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, no one gave me instructions before I bought these boots. And that's the problem. Right? No one told me what to do. You just sent me out into the wild to go find a pair.
Matt
By the way, you know, I like that phrase. You don't hear people say the phrase city slicker enough anymore. Since the Billy Crystal movie. Not been enough city slickers out there. I like that.
Myron Metcalf
So they want it outside.
Matt
All right, let's do one person.
Caller
Who.
Matt
Who disagrees? Let's go to Tyler in Texas. Not only a town, Tyler. What. What do you think they should do?
Caller
Oh, you gotta wear the pants inside the boots. If they're only 48 hours old, you gotta break them in. Unless. Unless you enjoy having raw calves. Myron's got it right. If the brand new boots, the jeans go in.
Myron Metcalf
That's what I was thinking. See, like, I. This is. It took me. I told you, like, it was a whole thing to get them on. I almost called somebody.
Matt
So you're saying you put the jeans in initially so you don't rub your calf raw.
Caller
Or else they ain't never gonna break in the right way.
Matt
Let me ask you a question. Was my advice about how you use the hair dryer in the bag? Have you ever done that?
Caller
Well, that just seems a little bit. That seems city slicker to me.
Matt
I think you're city slicker, Tyler. You get out of here.
Myron Metcalf
That was a lot though, man. You expected people to understand 19 steps you gave them to break in boots. You were like, go get two pairs of socks and a shoe and go get a picture and. And then put all this together next to you. You did say that.
Matt
All right, we got a guy named Fatty in Tennessee.
Myron Metcalf
That can't be his real name. What's his real name? What's his government?
Matt
It can be Fatty. Fatty Arbuckle. Did you know who that is? No, but there was an old timey comedian.
Myron Metcalf
I knew who Fatty Arbuckle was. Like, what? What about me makes you think I knew anything about a dude named Fatty?
Matt
Honestly, anybody under 70 probably shouldn't know who Fatty Arbuckle is.
Myron Metcalf
You know all that stuff from like 1930.
Matt
I guess Fatty hung up. So let's go to Donald in Compton. Donald is in Compton.
Myron Metcalf
You got the right show.
Caller
Donald and Compton.
Myron Metcalf
You got the right show.
Matt
I don't know if Donald and Compton's.
Myron Metcalf
Advice Donald meant to call Freddie and Hare. You sure you wanted us?
Caller
Yeah, I'm sure. You want to listen to you guys every Sunday.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Matt
Thank you, Donna. What was your advice?
Caller
So check it out. You got to break it down to what you're wearing. See if you got the flannel on and the belt buckle showing. You got to show them boots.
Matt
All right, let me see. Does he's got flannel? Do you have a belt buckle?
Myron Metcalf
No, I ain't got a belt.
Matt
He doesn't have a belt buckle, but he does have on flannel.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Okay, so how do you know this in Compton?
Caller
50 on that. But if you're going to have a T shirt with some nice jeans in the boots, you got to wear them covering the boots.
Myron Metcalf
Can I be honest with you? I don't know that I trust this coming from Compton. Help me understand your expertise on this.
Caller
My mom was born in Texas, so I got Texas in my blood.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Caller
Look at the story on the Compton cowboys. You ride horses in Compton?
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah. I've seen you all. You one of them?
Caller
Not one of them, but I grew up seeing them in my.
Matt
I don't know. I don't. I don't know anything about this. You're telling me there are people.
Myron Metcalf
There's a whole crew.
Matt
There are people in Compton, sir, that ride horses that are cowboys?
Myron Metcalf
I've seen them.
Caller
They ride those horses?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I've seen them.
Matt
Where in Compton?
Caller
In the center of me. Right in the heart of Compton, in.
Matt
The city, Just people just like.
Caller
Yeah.
Matt
Walk, Go down Compton in. On a horse.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Yeah.
Caller
You'd be surprised.
Matt
I had no. Oh, look, there's the picture.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt
Wow. There are Compton cowboys, huh?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Well, sir, I respect.
Matt
Now thank you for educating me. I appreciate it.
Caller
My nephew is running back out of his spirit high, getting recruited by Vanderbilt, so hopefully they make that offer soon.
Matt
My man is diverse. Going from connected across the street. You are connected. I appreciate the call. I had no idea about that. Let's try Jim in Michigan or. Wait a minute. Hang on, Jim. Let's first go to Rodney in New Mexico. Rodney.
Caller
Yes, sir. Matt, if you don't know about the. The Compton cowboys, come on now. That's where we went. I lived in Compton. We rode the horses. You from Kentucky. You got to know about the Compton cowboys.
Matt
I didn't know anything. Listen, I'm from Appalachia. We didn't spend a lot of time in Compton, but I have to tell you, I'm glad. I'm glad to know that there was. There wasn't a Harlan Compton pipeline when I was growing up.
Myron Metcalf
The closest Matt got to Compton was an NWA Album. Right. He never got any closer.
Matt
I just got straight out of it. I didn't. I wasn't going to stay.
Myron Metcalf
You saw pictures.
Matt
But go ahead. I'm glad to know. Now, what should he do?
Caller
Rodney, I want to know about the hockey. Myron, tell him about the hockey in the. In the. The champion. The coach that you talk about hockey because we got the final game here coming up.
Myron Metcalf
What? What.
Matt
What?
Myron Metcalf
I don't. What did you just. Oh, Tell him about hockey. The. The. You mean the Stanley Cup? I think it's been an incredible Stanley Cup.
Matt
I don't think that's what he's talking about. I don't know. I appreciate the call. We're gonna have to. Rodney, he kind of got off the. The deep end. Jim is in Michigan. Jim, you. How do you think the Michigan Wolverines are going to split up the money in college sports?
Myron Metcalf
Well.
Caller
Well, good morning, guys.
Myron Metcalf
Hey.
Caller
Well, so based upon what. They just had an article this morning interesting enough on this very subject. And War Manual said the way they're. Their plan is to go like 70, 75% football, 15 to 20% men's basketball, and then the 5 to 15%, you know, depending on how all the other stuff goes, is going to be distributed to women's basketball and ice hockey.
Matt
But it doesn't have to be like that. So Michigan's going to choose that, whatever they want. But let me. And I appreciate the call. Ross Dellinger was on my podcast this week, and he had an interesting comment. He said the sec, which is where we are, wanted to make it mandatory. They were going to tell the schools, you spend 70% on football, 15 on men's basketball, the other 15 elsewhere. And Kentucky basketball went, no, you ain't telling us to only spend 15%. And so they got rid of the rules. I think there'll be other schools that do that in the sport of their choice.
Myron Metcalf
Right now there will be. I don't see how this system works unless you create a cap per sport. Like, unless to me, you say, this is what you're going to designate to football, this is what you designate to basketball. Because I don't think it's going to be fair for a $5 million men's basketball program. To play a $2 million program and U.S. to feel like it's fair across the board.
Matt
When this fair ever mattered in college sports.
Myron Metcalf
Well, but we never had this situation.
Matt
I don't think you know what I mean. I don't know what they're going to do, but I don't think fair is going to end up in it. I don't think fairness is going to be their number one concern.
Myron Metcalf
The cheating's coming to Walker Hayes, who.
Matt
Yesterday was in San Diego, California. He was in San Diego. Is going to be here when we come back. Can you believe that he went all the way from San Diego to see you in those terrible jeans in your boots.
Myron Metcalf
You said it like you'd never heard of an airplane before. Do you know there's air travel in 2025?
Matt
I think it's impressive that he performed in San Diego in the time he's here this morning. I'm sorry. I still think it's impressive. It's Matt Myron here at CMA Fest in Nashville.

Podcast Summary: "Hour 1: CMA Fest!" – Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron
Episode Information
The episode kicks off with Matt Jones and Myron Metcalf broadcasting live from CMA Fest in Nashville, Tennessee—a premier event in the country music calendar. Myron expresses his amazement at the sheer size and energy of the crowd, comparing the festival to a colossal convergence of culture and music.
Matt (00:34): “...we are here ready from now until 1pm Eastern on a beautiful day in the city that's got to be the most crowded in the United States.”
Myron (01:13): “Yeah, I didn't know what to expect at my first CMA Fest, but the crowds have been incredible, man.”
The hosts highlight the vibrant atmosphere, likening it to significant cultural events like the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, emphasizing the unique and bustling environment of Nashville during the festival.
A lighthearted segment unfolds as Matt teases Myron about his new cowboy hat and boots. Myron shares his humorous struggles with accessorizing, notably the challenge of wearing headphones over his cowboy hat.
Matt (01:54): “You have been fabulously entertaining to me since you've been here... you showed up at the show today with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots on...”
Myron (03:13): “...this is my first pair of cowboy boots, my first cowboy hat... I blame you all for not telling me to tone it down.”
The conversation reveals Myron's first foray into cowboy attire, leading to playful banter about the practicality and style of tucking jeans into boots—a contentious fashion choice among country music aficionados.
Transitioning from fashion to real-life drama, Matt recounts an incident from the previous night where a woman's spontaneous kissing of a stranger disrupted the atmosphere of a Nashville bar. The situation became awkward as her husband, nearby but unaware of the encounter, returned to find out what transpired.
Matt (06:13): “A woman walks over and... pulls him over and just starts kissing him. And he looks surprised.”
Myron (07:08): “It was a lot going on.”
The hosts discuss the complexities of social interactions in such a lively setting, pondering whether bystanders should intervene in personal matters. They humorously conclude that Nashville is a place where spontaneous connections occur frequently, sometimes leading to unforeseen complications.
The conversation circles back to Myron's cowboy boots and jeans styling. Listeners are invited to call in and share their opinions on whether jeans should be tucked into boots, leading to a humorous exchange about Nashville's unique bar culture and cowboy aesthetics.
Matt (30:18): “...what are you wearing. Do you have flannel on and the belt buckle showing. You got to show them boots.”
Caller (39:09): “...you gotta wear them covering the boots.”
The segment highlights the playful tension between traditional cowboy attire and modern fashion sensibilities, showcasing the hosts' camaraderie and the interactive nature of the podcast.
A significant portion of the episode delves into the recent judicial approval of a House settlement allowing universities to allocate $20.5 million to athletes. This marks a historic shift from the longstanding NCAA amateurism model.
Matt (31:07): “...this is a revolutionary change for college sports. They are going to be giving most football programs $14 million a year...”
Myron (31:52): “...the schools that know how to work with their boosters to make sure guys are getting money above this cap. They're going to win big.”
The hosts explore the implications of this change, discussing how universities might prioritize certain sports over others based on financial viability. They speculate on potential strategic decisions institutions may make, such as focusing on football and one or two other revenue-generating sports, potentially at the expense of non-revenue sports like track and gymnastics.
Matt (32:22): “...schools are going to have to decide, what do you want to be good at?”
Myron (35:33): “...the biggest thing is how do you assign value, Matt, to a guy that, okay, he's worth a hundred thousand? How do you know that a guy's worth 200,000?”
The discussion also touches on the evolving role of coaches, suggesting a shift towards individuals with business acumen to navigate the new financial landscape of college sports.
Throughout the episode, Matt and Myron maintain an interactive dialogue with their listeners, taking calls that range from fashion advice to humorous anecdotes about Nashville's unique subcultures, such as the surprising presence of "Compton cowboys."
Caller (40:51): “...if you're going to have a T-shirt with some nice jeans in the boots, you got to wear them covering the boots.”
Myron (43:50): “...how do you handle splitting up the money in college sports?”
These interactions underscore the hosts' commitment to engaging with their audience, offering a mix of serious analysis and entertaining banter.
As the episode draws to a close, Matt and Myron reflect on the diverse musical landscape of Nashville, noting a shift away from traditional country music towards a broader range of genres. They also mention the presence of adoptable puppies at the festival, adding a heartwarming element to their coverage.
Matt (24:20): “...they were playing the Cupid Shuffle. Which is not country music that I would define as country music...”
Myron (26:01): “Amazing.”
The hosts wrap up with final thoughts, touching upon upcoming events like the NBA Finals and teasing future discussions about revolutionary changes in college sports.
Matt (01:42): “Think about the three days, the Saturday before Christmas at your local Walmart and then times it by a thousand.”
Myron (04:28): “This is like white people's Super Bowl.”
Matt (05:00): “If your girlfriend comes here for a bachelorette party, she is making out with another guy.”
Matt (31:07): “This is a revolutionary change for college sports.”
Myron (35:33): “You have to assign value to a guy that, okay, he's worth a hundred thousand?”
Matt (24:20): “They were playing the Cupid Shuffle. Which is not country music that I would define as country music.”
