Matt Jones
It is Sunday morning, Matt myron here on ESPN radio presented by Progressive Insurance. 888 say ESPN on another beautiful day in my neck of the woods in my part of the country. Less rain than we've had forever, but it's good because it's been beautiful and a very, you know, not hot August. You gotta like it. You can be a part of Matt Meyer nation on the Dr. Pepper calling line. That's 888, say 888-729-3776. ESPN nations presented by Dr. Pepper. It is not college football season without the delicious taste of an ice cold Dr. Pepper college football. It is a Pepper thing.
Myron Metcalf
What are we thinking about?
Matt Jones
I'm trying to think, but nothing happens. Nothing happens.
Myron Metcalf
Time to find out. This is off the top.
Matt Jones
Flash off the top with Matt and Myron. It is off the top and you got to start with week one in college football, which I don't know if it was everything we hoped it would be, but it was good. I mean, two top 10 matchups last yesterday. There'll be one tonight. Myron, let's just go over what I think were the biggest stories of the weekend so far. Although remember, you still have Notre Dame, Miami tonight, South Carolina, Lenora Sellers is playing and then Bill Belichick and Jordan Hudson, the second most famous couple in America, start Monday. Yeah, but I think you, I think if we're going to be fair, you got to start with Lee Corso who did his final game day pick yesterday. I thought it was very, very cool. He ends up picking every single team that he was associated with as a player or a coach one yesterday, including the biggest upset, his alma mater, Florida State.
Myron Metcalf
It's pretty cool, man, to see that. Like to watch Lee Corso, first off, just the farewell, man, to watch the week, the buildup in the week and everyone kind of giving him the tributes and then to see him on his last time doing this to pick Florida State was just, it was a cool sight, man, and I appreciated that everybody gave him. I thought the Farewell that he deserved.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's the thing. It's very rare in life that people get the farewell they deserve. They. Sometimes they get pushed out, sometimes things happen. He got the farewell he deserved. My favorite highlights were all the guys putting the. His head on them. I love that. I think Ohio State did an amazing job, sort of making it a thing, spelling out his name with the band in. Florida State did that later in the day as well, which was very cool. And then, of course, he ends up picking the same team that he picked in his first game. He picks in his last one, and then they win. I mean, it goes without saying there are certain announcers or personalities who the sport will always be indebted to as a figure. I mean, you really can go through them, right? I mean, John Madden in the NFL, you Dick Vital in college basketball. I think Charles Barkley is going to be like that in, in, in the NBA in terms of basketball. And then I think Lee Corso is that guy in college football. And so it was nice to see him get a fitting tribute. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And, you know, for people watching today, you know, we're in sort of this streaming social media world. Lee Corso comes from a place where that wasn't the case. I mean, you were a kid getting up Saturday morning, watching game day, getting prepared for the games ahead, and Lee Corso was like the guy that you look to, to kind of start your weekend, the one that got you, but.
Matt Jones
Also by being fun, you know what I mean? Like. Like we're used to now having this set of personalities out there that are larger than life. Right. I mean, there's no Pat McAfee without a Lee Corso. Right. There's no, you know, there's no Dave Portnoy without a leaf. I mean, Lee Corso, Dick Vital, in my opinion, were the best there have ever been at saying, I'm going to be an announcer, but this is fun. This is entertainment. I'm going to make it entertainment. And I think college sports lend themselves to that more than any other sport. And they understood that.
Myron Metcalf
No, and they promoted the sport, too. I mean, Dicky V, you mentioned, like, I think they were so important, like what game they did. College football wasn't always so national, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
If you played for the three or four biggest schools. But for game day to come to your state, that was putting a standard for the whole country.
Matt Jones
It's been to Lexington once, one time in 2007, and I was there and we lost, but I was in the front row. I mean, I, I was still holding signs like, this was when. Before I did any of this. And that was very cool. And he helped make that happen. Now, as far as the actual games, he led into Texas, Ohio State. Ohio State wins. It's a game where both those teams can easily be in the playoff. Both those teams may very well be in the playoff. But I can't. I don't think you can get away from that game. Congrats to Ohio State. But the storyline is Arch Manning didn't just not hit what we thought Arch Manning would do. He was there. He was bad. Were you surprised by that?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I think we all are, right? And there's a whole lot of people who are saying, be patient. Like, Archmanning isn't a high school Senior. He's not 17, 18 years old. This is year three for him. Like, this was billed as. You're getting ready to see something special, right?
Matt Jones
The.
Myron Metcalf
The grandson of Archie Manning, the. The nephew of Peyton and Eli. This is going to be one of those moments where. Remember where you were when you saw LeBron James. Remember where you were when maybe you saw a Bo Jackson, Muhammad Ali, almost like this generational talent. But, I mean, that's how it was. But that was the buzz. The hype was, you got to get ready. No, the hype was you're got. You're about to see something that maybe you haven't seen before. That's how it felt. Like Muhammad Ali. But then you turn on the game, and it's a Jake Paul fight. You're like, okay, wait a minute. Yes, there's action, there's excitement, but there's not the substance.
Matt Jones
Paul fight. Yeah, come on.
Myron Metcalf
Here's why I'm not you. You said he was terrible. It's not. I'm not being mean. What I'm saying is what we found out is that he was more viral than excellent. Like, I was waiting to see something special. And I've seen a lot of reactions about Arch Manning and, you know, Steve Sarkeesian, all these things show me mad where he was special. And my thing is, is there a world where maybe he just isn't? And people saw that live for the first time, and now they're getting their hearts broken.
Matt Jones
Well, I'm gonna tell you the moment that I at least. I mean, I at least questioned the Arch Manning hype. Okay, I'm not. And I'm not even willing to write the kid off yet, but just question the Arch Manning hype. Last year, you know, Texas, pretty good, right? And my team, a bad Kentucky team, went into Texas and for about three and a half quarters played them punch for punch, and we weren't even good. And I was sitting there watching Quinn Ewers was quarterback for Texas, and he wasn't playing particularly well. And I was sitting there thinking, this Quinn years guy's fine. He's about to get cut, though, in the NFL. He's not even going to make a roster.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
How is Arch Manning not beating this guy if he's the next big thing? That was what I was wondering at the time. I mean, if he's. If Arch Manning is this superstar talent, then why isn't he playing? And I've had that in my mind throughout the off season. As I was listening to Paul Finebaum say he's the next Tim Tebow to Dan Orlovsky say he might be the most special talent, I was like, but this guy didn't beat out Quinn Ewers. Like, how can you tell me all that? And yesterday, so. So it kind of validated my initial inclination coming into it.
Myron Metcalf
I think all that's fair. We. We were afraid to ask that question. Right. And again, I'm not writing them off after one game. I'm not writing my biggest thing. No, but my biggest thing with Matt was where was the special thing? I feel like in college football, We've seen a bunch of quarterbacks who were maybe younger guys in college football, and they just did things that made you go, okay, maybe that dude is different. I remember the first time I saw Lamar Jackson live in love in the. In the stadium, and people told me, man, you got to see this dude up close. It's not like watching him on tv.
Matt Jones
No, wait a minute. I was at Lamar Jackson's first game as a true freshman. Okay. He played as a true freshman against Kentucky. And in his first game, yeah, he made a lot of mistakes, but you knew you were watching something special. You could tell immediately there's something about this dude. Watch out. I didn't feel that way yesterday.
Myron Metcalf
Well, there's a long list of guys, including Archie, Arch Manning's Uncle Peyton. Like, there's a long list of dudes who came in and we didn't treat him like this. We didn't say, let's have patience for a third year guy. We didn't say, everybody back off. It's his coach's fault. What we all said in the buildup was, let's see if you live up to the hype. Now, here's something else that Arch did that I think is a factor in this, that we shouldn't just ignore. Before this game, Art said the pressure isn't on us. The quote red dot is on everybody else. When you say stuff like that and then you play the way that he played, the criticism is going to come and people shouldn't try to save him from that. He deserves it.
Matt Jones
He does. And listen, you get a lot of benefits in this world from being a man, right? You get the an IO deal. You get to where people like us know who you are. You get to where you know, I bet his social life ain't the worst thing in the world. In Austin, Texas, there's a lot of benefits from being a Manny, but, but then there's negatives that come with being a man. And when you look at a family where Archie was a superstar, Peyton was a superstar, Eli was a superstar, and then you're next. Well, I mean, that's the way it's going to be. That's the way it's going to be. So we'll see. Not writing him off, but at the same time, if the world's going to tell me that this is the second coming or the fourth coming of the Manning dynasty, he can't be throwing its sidearm on third down and not able to get a yard in a key moment of the game. We will do more. Week one of college football, including yesterday, had what I would argue could end up being one of the bigger upsets of the season. Depending on how things play out, we'll deal with that. And LSU gets a massive win. Is Brian Kelly and his family in LSU ready to make a big step? That's next here on Sunday Morning with Matt and Myron.

Matt Jones
I'm rooting for Tommy Fleetwood. He's got, like, a mullet, which is nice.
Myron Metcalf
He does.
Matt Jones
He seems like a funny guy. It would be awesome to see Win plus Scotty Shifler. People forget he served time. We can't keep rooting for Scotty Schiffer. My man has served time. He violated the traffic laws of the city of Louisville, Kentucky, and now he's a hero.
Myron Metcalf
He still hasn't paid off those promises he made that day in jail.
Matt Jones
Like, is he promised all those dudes he'd, like, get him tickets. The putter was nice, but can we get something else? I don't even play Matt Jones, Myron Metcalf, that hardened criminal Scotty Sheffler. Tommy Fleetwood did get the win last week. After he talked about it, I thought it was very nice. It was a great moment when he won, Myron. They said he came off the green and he hugged a guy. And I was like, you know, since he's British, I was like, that must be his best mate, right? That, you know, I was trying to fit in with the culture. And they said it was his stepson. And then I realized his wife is 57 and he's 34. So, like, you don't see that a lot. And they have a kid, like, their own kid together, too. So Tommy Fleetwood, he continues to take whatever you think he is and then he throws it off a little bit and he's like hugging his best buddy is also his stepson. Like, that's, that's. That's kind of a cool little addition to the Tommy Fleetwood biography.
Myron Metcalf
Do you have an age gap limit for relationships?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, within the bounds of the law, but let them do what they want to do. I mean, I don't care what difference it make to me if Tommy Fleetwood, if his wife is 57, like, if it makes him happy, you know? Right. Why would I. Why would I care?
Myron Metcalf
No, I'm not. Hey, man, I'm all about living your life, man.
Commercial Announcer
I mean, I watch.
Myron Metcalf
Do you?
Matt Jones
Yeah. It's supposed to be half plus seven, I think.
Commercial Announcer
Is it half or is it double? Is it double plus for, like over?
Matt Jones
I think it's. You take the oldest person and you half their age and you add seven. So in her case, she'd be 57 if you'd half it. I'm not going to be good at the battle here. Be 28 and a half plus seven. So he's. He's close. He's like a half year old.
Myron Metcalf
He's in the. He's in the zone. Okay, he's in.
Matt Jones
He's in the zone.
Myron Metcalf
Well, let's be honest, like, men do this every day. Of course.
Matt Jones
I mean, we, by the way, North Carolina, TCU tomorrow night on espn. And espn, it's gonna be.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know how many times they're gonna show Jordan Hudson, though. You think? How many times is there gonna be.
Matt Jones
Like, that's the most interesting part of that game. You think anybody cares about tcu? Come on. College football is back. Tune in. Today, South Carolina battles Texas. Texas, presented by Dr. Pepper Coverages at 2:30 Eastern on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app Norris Sellers, you'll get to see against the Hokies. Where is that game? Is it in. Is it in Blacksburg or is it that. That feels like kind of gave me in Charlotte. Are they playing that in Charlotte?
Myron Metcalf
I.
Matt Jones
Is it in Atlanta? Okay. Long as it's not.
Myron Metcalf
Which is.
Matt Jones
I feel like they play. I feel like one of the Carolinas play somebody in charge. As we saw yesterday, these games need to be on home fields. Lsu, Clemson was better because it was in the worst version of Death Valley. There's only one Death Valley. That's in Baton Rouge, as you saw yesterday. Same thing with Alabama, Florida State, but let's talk about the battle of the Death Valleys. Lsu, after a first half that was, you know, kind of. We'll see. They got down, went for a touchdown at the end, didn't go for field goal. Second half, dominated the game. Score two touchdowns, win 17:10. Should have been three touchdowns. They had a touchdown robbed from them by Barry and Brown. What'd you think of Brian Kelly's group's performance?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I'll see the same thing. I always think, like, they look pretty good at this stage. I don't think that's ever the question. With Brian Kelly, you're bringing a guy in, Garrett Nessmayer, who could be the number one pick, depending on who you ask.
Matt Jones
He looked like. Of those top dudes that we were looking, he looked like the best of the group.
Myron Metcalf
Yes, he would look. He looked ready. I mean, he looked seasoned, experienced, and I think that's obviously helped him get that win. But this is what you're supposed to get from a Brian Kelly LSU team. They're a top 10 team. I think the question is always, what does it look like at the end? So, to me, it's hard to get too excited, even against a guy like Dabo and Clemson, because I expect LSU to be competitive in every game they play. But in the postseason, if they get to the postseason, that's where I go. Okay. I don't know that I trust Brian Kelly in that situation. They look, though, like they have a team that could change that reality for Brian Kelly. Like, they look pretty good yesterday.
Matt Jones
Well, and they closed out a game. I mean, their problem last year is they. I think they went into, like, five games leading with in the fourth quarter and only won one of them. I mean, I think that's. I think that's where you see it. A couple of things were affirmed to me about this game. I just need to recognize. First of all, I like a good trash talk. LSU came into the game wearing shirts that said one and. Oh, that's what I love. Okay, bring it. You got your one and O shirt, but then you come out and you are one and. Oh, I don't know how LSU fans ended up storming Clemson's field. That seems like that shouldn't be allowed. But you know what? Good for you. They were. Did you see that? They were dancing on the field and asking the band to play a risque song on Clemson's field. That is what I like, Myron. Lsu. You know, we talk about great fan bases. Sometimes people forget lsu. You ain't gonna have more fun in a college football game in the United States of America than lsu. I'm telling everybody right now, everybody talks, great environments. You want to have the most fun day you'll ever have? Find a night game at LSU. Start at 11am don't talk to me again. Matter of fact, I don't want to talk to you after that, because by five O', clock, you're not going to be coherent. That is where it's the best. And LSU fans got to show their lsuness yesterday.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean that's, that's one of those fan bases on the short list of fan bases that will come to your city and out drink your fans in your own city like they will out party out everything you no doubt once it comes time to kick off. And you love that. Man, I love the one of those shirts. I love the buzz, I love the hype. That's what college football should be about. I mean LSU's in a situation where I don't think they had to win that game. Considering the SEC schedule. You're going to get a bunch of opportunities to get quality wins. Clemson, however, is in a whole different situation. Man, they don't have the big.
Matt Jones
Before we go, before we finish the Clemson, let me just make your point about lsu. I own a sports bar. I've had every major college basketball or college football team come to Lexington since we've owned it. I have servers who now have retired from serving, have gotten a regular job and have kids who still come and ask me can I come work when LSU comes to town again. That's how much they tip and that's how much fun they are. You want to talk about LSU tips double the other teams because they have to, because they're loud and they drink a lot and they're obnoxious. Now Clemson is the opposite of that. Clemson's like the Bible belt of football teams. Dabo with his name, image and likeness in the realm of God. Yesterday, yesterday he was Dabo. He kept throwing his headset off and staring off in the sun and looking perturbed. There's no coach in sports that I find more annoying than Dabo. I enjoyed watching him lose.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I know you kind of got that personal thing with him.
Matt Jones
For me it's not personal. I don't know him. He just seems annoying.
Myron Metcalf
But I mean it's a good example of a guy and a lot of coaches are in this situation. You can talk all you want about Nil and Rev share and transfer portal and you can knock those things all you want. If you are still doing that today, it's just going to hurt your team. Like at the end of the day, Dabo is a great example of what happens when you don't lean into the current times. The problem with Clemson is that that was a much bigger game for them than it was for LSU because of their schedule. Right now the only two ranked opponents on Clemson's schedule in the regular season. A matchup against SMU at home on October 18th. A matchup at South Carolina in the season finale on November 29th. That's it, Matt. They don't have a bunch of quality win opportunities to boost their schedule. And there's a world where SMU and SC, I mean you. South Carolina aren't nationally ranked top 25 teams once they meet them. So I feel like Clemson needed that game, LSU didn't. LSU has a bunch of quality win opportunities, but totally agree.
Matt Jones
And they're at home.
Myron Metcalf
They're in a tough.
Matt Jones
They're at home. So if it comes down to one of those that you don't know.
Myron Metcalf
Why.
Matt Jones
You take it up for Dabo, though, you know, you feel the same. Just try to act like you try to. See, he always tries to act like he's. He. Oh, I'm Mr. Neutral Reporter. I don't take.
Myron Metcalf
No, no.
Matt Jones
You feel the same way about Dabo I do.
Myron Metcalf
No. You have a certain thing about people you think are frauds in the south, specifically. Like, you think like Dabo. There's like, I'm not gonna say he's a fraud.
Matt Jones
I'm not gonna say he's a fraud because he may be a good man. What I'm gonna say is though, when you wear everything on your sleeve and you have to tell me about it, like, chill out. You know what I mean? I just, I just say chill out. You don't need that. If you're so virtuous, you'll need to tell me every day. Just live. And stop whining at the referees every single time they make a call.
Myron Metcalf
He did.
Matt Jones
Next espn.

Jake Trotter
The ball and run with it.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, every time I do the show, I read from this book, the Gucci Band Guide to Greatness. You can't put a lion and a tiger together and think they aren't going to fight. They're going to fight. It is what it is, okay? There's nothing I can tell you that can affect you. Hey, man, wash your hands. Stay home and be safe, okay? You quit your job now, but a year from now is gonna have terrible consequences. Okay, last one, last one, last one. You've got to use your head for more than a hat rack. Somebody edited this.
Matt Jones
What is that book? Is that Gucci, Man?
Myron Metcalf
Guide to Greatness? Yeah. The rapper Gucci Mane has a self help book.
Matt Jones
Does he really?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, he's got a self help book. And on Friday I did Unsportsmanlike with Michelle Smallman and Courtney Cronin. And the last couple times I've done the show, I've read from the book and they got a kick out of that. Yeah, so he read from the book at the end of the show.
Matt Jones
Yeah, we'll go tomorrow, too. Yeah, man, they put you on all these shows. You are like. You're like Raphael Belliard. They'll put you as a utility man on all of the shows.
Myron Metcalf
I'm basically like the guy you bring in who scores eight points a game. And I'm a good locker room presence at espn. Like, that's kind of how they see me. I feel like I am the person.
Matt Jones
I think that ESPN believes if you don't build the team around, he can't. He'll poison your locker room. Yeah, you're definitely.
Myron Metcalf
You definitely.
Matt Jones
No, I think that's the case because, like, we're to the point now at ESPN that they'll go, all right, Matt, you can work with Myron. There's a couple other people. We'll put you with David Dennis, we'll put you with Andre Snellings. There's a pattern here of who they think I can work with.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And I'm cool with that because I like all those people. But I do think there's like a. It's kind of like an Allen Iverson thing. You're either going to have to give him the ball or else he can't be standing in the wing. He's not a three and D guy.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. And I come in and like, coach is like, you know what? We needed a guy like Byron in the locker room. You know, we had a bunch of young guys.
Matt Jones
No, you're jackass. Me being Dennis Rodman. Like, you have to be there for me to be on the team.
Myron Metcalf
They're like, like, hey, man, can you Go talk to the young guy.
Matt Jones
Remember when Dennis Rodman, when they were just like Jack Haley had a job for years and his job. I didn't know what he did with him but his job seemed to be keep Dennis from getting arrested.
Myron Metcalf
Donna's haslam you Donna's hassle. That's, that's what he did with the, with the Miami man. If you can get cool unk status, I mean and people like to work with you, I mean you can do this for a long time.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah. Because I always go, you know the morning show like I'm, I'm available.
Myron Metcalf
And they're like well I'm good.
Matt Jones
What's that's good to hear. It's nice to have options.
Myron Metcalf
But I'm on the morning show. I get up at 3:30 in the morning central time. So some of it too is like Myron will do it right. I'm the dude on the team where.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's true too. I'll do it but I'll be angry about it.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, I'm the dude on the team at like when I'm dunking a game the bench goes crazy. Like everybody runs onto the court. Everybody's high fiving me. We get a technical foul like everybody just goes wild.
Matt Jones
You're the boosters kids son. You're the booster son that has been brought in crowd. Yeah. And I'm Marshall Henderson and half the other team's fan base is flipping me off and the coaches are going, I wish we didn't have to deal with him with that. Sunday morning is presented by Progressive Insurance. Save when you bundle motorcycle, RV and boat insurance. Visit progressive.com now. Archbannie, we mentioned we went 17 for 30, 170 yards, one touchdown, one interception. But they lost the game 14 to 7. When it was over, he said he had to get better. Steve. Coach Steve Sarkeesian said it's just one chapter in his season. It was interesting. You know I watched the game. My Kentucky Wildcats were beating powerhouse Toledo yesterday during the game. So I didn't get to give it quite the attention it deserves because I was locked in on beating the Rockets. But you, it was interesting listening to you and our producers before the show talking about the game. They were very much saying this is Sark's fault. You were more on Arch. Let me make the case for the Sark thing. I didn't understand the play calling, especially down the stretch. You know they're, they're inside the tour like the five. They run the ball four straight times. I don't get that you've got Arch Manning at least look one time to try to do play action or something like that. It didn't feel like throughout the game, for a guy they have that supposedly the next great quarterback, that they trusted him. I kind of thought it was a Sark, like, hey, what's going on? But you still are more of an Arch, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, to me, like, did he not open the playbook because he can't? I mean, that's something that could consider. Here is like, everyone's saying, well, Sark, why didn't you give more opportunities? You give opportunities to the guys you think who can execute. And I don't think Arch did a lot to instill confidence. It's Steve Sarkeesian that he could. He had a weird throwing motion in some of those plays, like he was Derek Jeter, you know, throwing a ball to first base or something. He looked just out of rhythm. But there were things that special quarterbacks are supposed to do. He didn't do any of them. Like, there was nothing about Arch Manning that made me feel like this is the buzz that everybody was talking about. This is the generational talent everyone's talking about. He looked like a dude whose last name is Manning. And I don't know what else there is to it. Now, I'm not writing them off. It's far too early to do that. But this is not a freshman quarterback. Matt, you're in the sec. Do y' all remember what we did to Tebow? Do you remember what we did to Cam Newton? Do you remember what we did to Tua came at a halftime in the national championship game? And the expectation was still that he's supposed to make something happen. Like, that is a league full of critics.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And I actually think Arch again, back to the pros and cons of being a Manny. Let me play you two clips here, and I want you to hear how two different people talked about that performance. So let's first play Jake Trotter, ESPN senior game writer. He was our senior college football writer. He was on game night. Here's what he had to say about it today.
Jake Trotter
He was bad. Like, he just was not good. You know, you start with the first throw of the game. He's got a receiver wide open on a corner route, throws the ball into the dirt, and it really set the tone for the day. And listen, Ohio State's defense played well, especially the secondary. But it's not like Arch was under duress, you know, throughout the day, you know, he had plenty of time to throw I thought the pass protection for Texas was excellent. They ran the ball well. So it wasn't like he was in situations where, you know, he was. They knew that they were going to throw every down. You know, Texas average 4.5 yards per carry. If they even get like an average to below average quarterback performance, Texas maybe wins the game. But they didn't get that.
Matt Jones
So that's pretty harsh. Like, if you were even below average, I could accept it. That's like what ex girlfriends of mine have said. If you would even be a below average boyfriend, I could handle it. But you're such a bad boyfriend. Like, that's. That's kind of what he's saying. Then change that to Matt Sims, who was on College Game day on ESPN Radio, and here's what he said.
Myron Metcalf
The truth is, is actually I think Arch did a lot of good things today. I really do. I thought he played tough. I thought he moved well in the pocket numerous times throughout the football game. Yes, there were times where he was inaccurate with the football, maybe rushing his decision. Not exactly sure how much time he had in the pocket in certain situations. But of course, this is a young man getting his first legitimate start being the guy for Texas, you know, I.
Matt Jones
Mean, those are two people watching the same game who seem to see two completely different things.
Myron Metcalf
You know, who said that I did a lot of good things? Every teacher in a parent teacher conference from fifth grade through ninth grade, mine did a lot of good things. And then they told my parents my grade and the homework I hadn't turned in and say I didn't do well on it wasn't always great. This is not supposed to do. He did a lot of good things kind of situation. This was supposed to be a great movie that everybody wants to see. You're going to watch it and whether you know a ton about football or you know nothing about football, you're going to be able to look at that and go, that's a savant. That's a prodigy. That is one of those guys in a category that few are ever in. And he did nothing. I think the reality is, and again, people are going to crush Steve Sarkeesian for not opening the playbook. I don't think Steve Sarkeesian thought he could. The run game was good. He put Arch Manning a position where, listen, go out and be special and make plays and do all the stuff that everyone thinks that you can do. And Arch couldn't do that. So as much as people want to say that's on Steve Sarkeesian at some Point, Matt. We have to expect a guy viewed as a generational talent to do generational talent kind of stuff. And he did none of that. So for me, I put it on Arch. He has to be better. That was not a great showing from him.
Matt Jones
Would you say now he's not a generational talent? I know you like that word. I know you. I know you think that there are lots of generational talents. Is he. Would you take that away from him now? No longer a generational talent.
Myron Metcalf
I would form a committee to. Where? You couldn't say the phrase generational talent until the committee voted on it. It's too early at this point. At the same time, I didn't see anything in that game that made me feel like Arch is special. Maybe that changes in the weeks ahead, but I just didn't see that in his debut as a start.
Matt Jones
Nothing. Nothing. Even so, if his name was Arch.
Myron Metcalf
Jones, nobody would care.
Matt Jones
What do you think? Nobody would care.
Myron Metcalf
If his name was Arch Jones, we'd be talking about, does Texas have another quarterback? Just in case.
Matt Jones
Wow. Okay. All right.
Myron Metcalf
That would be the conversation.
Matt Jones
The people in Ohio State will get offended if we don't know that. They won't. You know, Ryan Day, when he took over that job, got a lot of, well, he's not Urban Meyer. He's this, he's this, he's that. I mean, they are quietly and efficiently coming off a national championship win, a game that I picked them to win, but most people seem to think they had no shot at. Is this guy. Now, is it possible he's the best coach in college football? He and Kirby Smart, maybe.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, he's got the ring to suggest as much. I mean, he came out in a big game. His quarterback wasn't phenomenal, but they got it done. Like what you see, I think with Ohio State is one of the few teams that seems to be good everywhere. So you got to give Ryan Day a lot of credit for that. They also spent, I believe, Matt, 20 to 30 million on this roster. Like, so what's going to be interesting is that the guys who could spin this before the new rules took place, like, what happens in the years ahead, but they're getting what they paid for at Ohio State.
Matt Jones
Can I say that? Ryan Day and this. First of all, it's going to sound like it's not a compliment. James and Myron, you want to set.
Myron Metcalf
Stuff up like this.
Matt Jones
This is a compliment. I promise you. It's going to sound like it's not a compliment, but it is a compliment. Ryan Day Looks like he could be on the box for Just for Men beard color because he's used. Okay, I understand, but like, his beard is perfectly shaped to his face and a little darker than I think it should be. So he looks to me like on those brown boxes for Just for Men, like beer, beard dye or whatever. Yeah, he would be jet black like that. He would be the face for it. And I'm, I'm saying that's a compliment because those people are often very handsome and have very nice beards. But do you agree with me that he is the Just for Men beard model? He is.
Myron Metcalf
But you can also tell these rich and powerful because no one wants to come into the room and tell him it's too much.
Matt Jones
Like, I think I'm not telling him it's too much. I just want you to understand. Here's what I would say to Ryan Day.
Myron Metcalf
Granted, don't get a box.
Matt Jones
Go glib box of that Just for Men beard thing. And look at the man that's on there. That's you. Okay, now if you're good with it, then I'm good with it. I just want you to understand that's what you look like. Like, that's the beard. You're projected. Maybe have just a little bit of gray and it'll be okay.
Myron Metcalf
You said if you're good.
Matt Jones
Why, why are you being silent?
Myron Metcalf
Because you said if you're good with it, I'm good with it. And y' all say that. Some people say that's that when they. I don't want to be critical. You're good with it. I'm good with it. What does that.
Matt Jones
If you're good.
Myron Metcalf
You like her? I like her.
Matt Jones
It looks good on you. Alabama got stopped by Florida State yesterday and that might be bad news for Kaylin DeBoer. That's why, by the way, that's why I don't fill in on the other shows or segments like that. It's next here on Sunday Morning, Matt and Myron.

It is Sunday morning. Matt Myron, you know, we've gotten 45 minutes in. I don't think we've actually talked about the biggest stunner of the day. The Alabama Crimson Tide went down to Florida State, led by new quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who spent all summer saying they ain't got Nick Saban to hide, hide them anymore. Strong words. And then he played it out. Florida State wins 31, 17. But honestly, they dominated the game like it wasn't even. It wasn't even just the 14 points. You watch that game. Florida State looked like they were the better team. Alabama was on their heels. It did not look like Alabama. It just did the Alabama that I'm used to, the Alabama the last 20 years where they knock in the mouth and you just knew the talent was coming, just wasn't there efforts not the same. Everything about it was disappointing. And now Caitlin DeBore, one year and one game into the post Saban tenure, looks like somebody that is, is, is. I don't know what the on the edge, let's say Myron in Alabama. What did you think of that performance specifically for the Tide?
Myron Metcalf
No. I mean, he looked like he did a shotgun marriage and then he's waking up a week later going, what did I do? How do I get out of this? He didn't have this pressure at Washington. He could have stayed there and not had to deal with the chaos attached to Alabama football last year. He got a place.
Matt Jones
Hang on. That's chaos. Like, that's the best job in the.
Myron Metcalf
Country if you can handle it and if you win.
Matt Jones
True.
Myron Metcalf
We talk about good jobs. Yeah, we talk about good jobs. It's good jobs and you can handle it and you can be successful, then it's a great job. If you fail in those areas, it's the worst job because now you got to deal with the scrutiny. You know us in the media, Matt, we love a good buyout story. Like we love Having the contract of a coach who might be on the hot seat at some point in the season. And then in week six, seven, eight, we show you what the buyout terms are and what it's going to cost.
Matt Jones
$70 million. 70 million it is.
Myron Metcalf
70 million. But here's the thing, Matt. Those stories are out there. After one game. I don't know that I've ever heard of a coach in college football, in college sports, ever, who, after one game, we were already saying, here is the buyout language. This is what could happen to this guy. I'll say this Alabama, to me, reminds me of Kentucky basketball fans. And you, you know that better than I do. They're not going to accept falling into mediocrity. They're not going to accept going back to some place where they're not relevant. That team, that program, that university, that state, that community is not going to accept Alabama being an afterthought in college football. And I don't care what the buyout is. If Kaylin DeBoer does that this season, he will not coach a third season with Alabama.
Matt Jones
There's a lot. There's a lot of truth to that. So we were talking about this off the air. The only analogy to Alabama football in terms of the fans, I'm not talking about tradition and winning and all that, but in terms of fan, there's only one analogy, and it's Kentucky basketball. And the two things they have in common is they're both in a state that don't have pro sports teams. Yeah, the city of Louisville is the largest city in America without a pro sports team. I would think the city of Birmingham is close. If it's not second, it might be third or fourth. Alabama and Kentucky are driven as a state, not just as a program. The state is driven by the athletics department. It just is. It's the economic engine of the state. One of them is sports. So you cannot fail. At Kentucky, it's basketball. At Alabama, it's football, but you cannot fail. And so when Calyn DeBoer loses a game in that state, it's not just a law. It's a cultural and economic problem. And that sounds like hyperbole, but go ask the people in that state, go ask the people who run those what it's like if Alabama football is not Alabama football. The whole state is a little different. So you're exactly right. They can't accept losses. You look at that schedule. You. You were talking about it earlier. They still play lsu, Ole Miss, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, Oklahoma. They could lose if they're not good. They could lose a lot of games. And at Alabama they haven't. I mean, remember the last coach they had that didn't succeed? They somehow started talking about him in a strip club. Like all of a sudden just stuff started happening. If you remember. I mean, I'm not even lying. Go back and look what happened to that guy was Mike DeBose. Is that who it was? Like they just, the people there start losing their minds. And I'm just telling you, you're right. Like, what I saw yesterday is the start of what will be the biggest story in college football if it, if it doesn't get better.
Myron Metcalf
But I think you hit it early in the show as to why. I don't know the last time I saw a team dominate Alabama that way. No, and I think there were games.
Matt Jones
Last year, especially not a good. I mean, for State was 2 and 10 last year.
Myron Metcalf
And then to. I mean, last year there were moments where you thought, okay, this isn't Alabama, it's year one. Whatever. You talk to any football coach, you call a football coach right now and you say, how do you measure a team? They're not going to tell you skill players, they're not going to say quarterbacks and they're not going to say wide receivers. They're going to say on the line of scrimmage, they're going to tell you if they can push you around on the offensive line, if they can get to your quarterback on the defensive line, that is the difference. And Alabama, no matter what else has been going on, they were dominant in that area. They could push you around on both sides of the ball. You could watch them, Matt. And again, whether you know about football or not, you could see physically that they could kind of do whatever they wanted to against teams. Florida State did that to Alabama. So to watch a team do what Alabama has always done to other teams, those fans are not going to stand for this. And 70 million is a crazy, crazy number. But I think the fans fan base is crazier about Alabama football than that number is. So I just didn't think is going to fail if he doesn't get something going here soon.
Matt Jones
Anybody watches Alabama would tell you they haven't had an Alabama offensive line in like four years. But the one thing they've always had was they would have dudes who could get to your quarterback and who could make your life miserable. Their defensive line has been dominant for 18. I don't even know how many dudes they put in NFL ton. And then their secondary, their their offensive line has taken a step back in the last few years. But remember, a lot of Alabama's dominance didn't come from skill positions, right? It came from everything else. And you that is the thing they missed. And the biggest reason is because of nil they can't stack the second string as well. They get one string and if they make a failed decision, it hurts them. And you saw that yesterday because they don't have a guy who can then come in who is as good as a normal Alabama offensive lineman and defensive lineman is. The Cowboys made a shocking trade. We got to talk about it next.
Myron Metcalf
What's up kiddos?
