I'm Matt Myron on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance, Matt Jones, Meyer and Metcalf. We are here getting ready for what is actually our final Sunday morning show. That's right. We've been doing this show for eight years. Started in early September 2018. We are the longest running show on ESPN with the same host in the same time slot on ESPN Radio. But this will be the last one on Sunday morning as we're moving to daily Monday through Friday from 3 to 5pm, which is obviously very exciting for us. But today will be a little nostalgic because this time slot, every Sunday morning I've woken up and got come into my room here with the desk and said get to see Myron and talk about whatever happened on Saturday. Admiring Today is the last day of that. Are you feeling excited, melancholy? What are you?

I think a little bit of both. You know, I think mostly I feel grateful, you know, like the listeners of this show. That's how we ended up doing a daily show. So I'm just more grateful than anything that the show caught on and we have all these loyal listeners who always, you know, reach out to us. And so I'm excited about what's ahead. But also I love my Sunday morning people too. And I'm just grateful.

This show started as Matt Myron and Dan Orlovsky. It was called Countdown to Kickoff. Dan Orlofsky, who later became a star, rudely left us here in this town.

Then we had Joe Fortinbaugh, who then moved on to do all of the gambling things that if you notice there's a theme. Everyone else moved on. Myron and I stayed here. Then we had Doug Kazarian, who would be on once every weeks or so when he found time to actually join us.

He would just occasionally be like, oh, I'll, I'll show up today. And then, and then after that it was us. And it has been us for about four and a half years. Just the two of us. Myra?

Yeah, you know, we, we're like the, the old high school football coach. You know, everybody goes on to college and, and, and now, now the kid came back and bought us a house and now we're moving to like a, a bigger city.

Yeah, now we took a job. We moved from the local high school. Now we're moving to A4A high school.

It took us to Central. We're at Central High now.

I mean, don't get me wrong, they still ain't putting us on television, but for right now, no, but we're up.

But. No, but we're on camera, though, so people need to know. Camera on the ESPN app, you could, you can see us on camera every day.

So you'll be able to watch us on the ESPN app. That's something. I mean, that's going to mean a lot of showering for me, which is something I'm not necessarily excited about. And, you know, I'm having to.

Well, I don't shower on Sunday mornings before these shows. Yeah, but now you go. I mean, he can't go on camera and not at least get up and shower. So we're going to have to do that. But you know, through these years we've had a lot of producers and we appreciate them admiring you and I become friends. And I'm looking forward to doing one more in this Sunday morning routine. I've probably always had that title, but it's really going to advance at 10 hours a week.

Yeah, yeah. But I mean, no one's tuning in to hear us break down the 2, 3 zone that some team play like you listen to us because you maybe want to laugh or. Yeah, just, just feel something. I feel like our show is the show that makes you feel something.

What does it make you feel?

A lot of things. I mean, happy, joy, upset. I mean, but it makes you feel something and that's why people tune in.

I think it is. So 888 say ESPN phone lines are open. Let's, let's start with, with what I know you want to talk about because you like watching men beat each other in the face. And so I'm sure you were interested in the Conor McGregor debacle last night. What do you make of it? Just a freak injury and things happen? Or was it just another example of kind of people getting their hopes up for something that was never going to happen first?

You got to say that sentence a little fast. You say you like watching men. You get Paul. There's a little too many pauses in there. Say the whole sentence. I think to me it was one of the biggest disappointments probably in sports history considering the build up. And he comes out, who knows? He says he wasn't hurt before. He looked hurt coming into the kitchen.

If you watch, if you go back and you watch the video of him walking in, he kind of limps a couple times.

[C]

Well, and even at the weigh in, like, he was wearing like shoes. Like what you never see guys wear.

[B]

You're not supposed to wear shoes at the weigh in.

[C]

No, you just never see it. So there's a lot of weird stuff that was happening. And then when he got him to the cage, he looked around in a way that I've never seen him. He looked nervous.

Go back and look when he takes his shoes off.

Yeah, it's weird.

Like, it's kind of. He has like a little limp when he takes his shoes off.

And who knows? I mean, I bet they paid him 40, 50, 60, $70 million to do that.

Let's say that he was hurt just for sake of. Because I think there are at least. There's at least evidence that he looked hurt before the fight.

Is it a little bit scammy to then go ahead with the fight if he has no chance and he's hurt?

Yes and no. I will say this. It depends on when he was hurt, if he's hurt. If he went through his whole training camp and everybody knew he had an injury and somehow he still got cleared to fight, that's a situation where maybe people think about legal action, I don't know. But if he's before the fight messing around because before the fight he was doing like kung fu moves and just weird stuff, that's not something you can really control.

Do you think he might have gotten hurt on that? You know, listen, I don't know what the. The names of this stuff.

But he did like a kick, right? And it looked like his. It looked like his knee may have flopped. Is that possibility?

Yeah, he came out like a third grader being let out for recess. Like, you don't. Like, you're a professional fighter. And this dude just ran out and threw kicks. And Max Holloway is sort of like, what's wrong with this dude? It's disappointing because again, the buildup to it, I don't know the last time I've seen that kind of a crowd be that disappointed that quickly. But you just looked around, people were booing. A lot of people thought it was a scam. Like it was.

But I mean, you can understand why they would think that, right?

Yes. And I think you'll never see Conor McGregor again. Another.

So you don't think he ever fights again?

No. I mean, this is a guy who in. In 2021, had an ACL tear and knee issues and then more knee issues. His body's broken. At the end of the day, he can't do the things you have to Do. To be able to fight in the ufc. I think we've seen the last of

them, but they did get. Again, let me just be clear. I have no idea who these people are that I'm talking about. I know there's a person. I know two fighters in UFC, actually, I know one if Colin McGregor's gone, because I don't believe.

And I said one of them had to be Tom Crean, ESPN college basketball analyst and in my opinion, the nicest person that works at espn. No, I'm excited for you guys. I mean it. I've been following it and once they finally put out what your time slot was well deserved for both of you, it's thanks, coach. Always fun and funny to be on with you and it's great to listen to you and I think it's well deserved. I'm excited for everybody that's a part of it with you guys.

Well, thank you very much. We've had questions coming in here, by the way, on the text machine. A lot of them are asking our producers going, actually, yes, our main producers going, and then our board ops. Some of them are going to be, you know, beyond some of the days as well. So the show is, it's just moving whole hat. All right. So, Tom, I want to start one of the things I like about you. You're honest and you give your take. And yesterday one of your online takes was, hey, everybody shut up about the summer league. Calm down. Somebody had given grades of every player in the first round. And you essentially said, everybody hush. It's been one game. Explain your position because I think you're probably right.

[D]

Well, I just think, and again, I didn't mean it in a bad way at all. But it's like, come on, man, it's one game. And in the bottom line, when you start kicking out those grades and it just paints a picture that's not reality. Right. Like, you can get through five games in the summer league and it's hard to put a grade on. I mean, there's so many guys. Some players played in the Utah league, some of them played in the in the California games before they got to Vegas. And it's just there's so much overreaction. And I'll probably be a part of it this week because I'm doing ESPN summer league games at the end of the week and on the weekend. And I mean, you can't overreact too bad or too good. You can just look at like, okay, how can we forecast this? You know, what do we see? And I think when you start putting grades on, I think anybody putting grades on it, let alone if it's somebody that has a bunch of followers or doesn't have followers, the dangerous place to be for people, you can say it's all in fun, but at the end of the day, these guys are, they're in a brand new world, you know, matter what. So all the money they're going to make, all the money they made at nil, you know, all the brand stuff that they have, none of that matters when they play those games. And it's a whole new world, especially for the guys. Most of them haven't played much basketball in months when it comes to getting up and down a court.

Tom, I do think summer league kind of helps you show that you can be a good teammate, maybe, if anything. And I listen to the Darren Peterson comments where he says, yeah, things didn't go well at Kansas. I wasn't happy. I didn't have the ball in my hands and now I do and things are better. What did you take from. From that sort of this new Darren Peterson we're seeing him.

[D]

I didn't like that and I like him. I like him a lot, you know, and we interviewed him when I was with Sirius XMBA Radio when I was at the draft. I love watching him play, but I didn't like that. Like, you don't need to do that. There were so many things that were left unsaid during the. And I think he did a good job in the spring of coming back and kind of talking about the issues of why he didn't play. But now you're going to start talking about having the ball, not having the ball. That team went 9, 2 without him. You know, that's what everybody has to remember. And nobody's really talking about that, right. I think they were 15 and nine with him, nine and two without him. That was a good team. He made him better in most cases. But the whole, you know, you haven't played with Keonte George yet. You know, he's going to have the ball. There's a bunch of guys on that Team Isaiah Collier, Bryce, Sensible. There's a lot of guys that need the ball to be effective. On the Utah Jazz, you're not playing with them yet. I just wish he'd have got better advice on that because I think he is going to be. I think he's going to be a great player. I mean, when you look at his quickness, what he can do defensively. I've said this for a long time now when on air, like, he's not only a guy that could lead the NBA in scoring at some point, he's a guy that could lead the NBA some urine steals. I mean, he can be so good defensively, but he didn't need to do that, you know, with Kansas. That made no sense to me.

Okay, so I, I want to push back on one thing about the summer league with you, Tom. I. I've been out there a few years and while I agree with you, if, if a player struggles in the summer league, I definitely don't think that necessarily means anything. But sometimes in the summer league you'll see a guy and you'll go, okay, I thought that he was going to be it it and he's going to be it. I remember Anthony Davis's summer league. He was like that. Devin Booker kind of broke out in his summer league. Shea Alexander did as well. Those are just Kentucky guys. As I watched AJ Demonsa, Caleb Wilson watching those guys, obviously people still thought they'd be good, but when you watched them, you were like, oh, okay, maybe it's this. He, they're a lot better than these dudes. Do you think there's value when you see that eye popping factor?

[D]

I think there's value. It's a great point. I think there's value when you see something that are transferable to the regular season. So like Caleb Wilson is a great example. Watching him last year, he was 7 to 27 from 3 at North Carolina. He made seven threes the other night. So think about that. But when you watch them play and obviously from my point of being in the studio so much to see that and studying the, like, his, his footwork was impressive. I mean, he was really good with that. So he said, okay, he's going to get better as a shooter. It comes off his hand pretty good. It's a little bit slow but. But it's good. The other day he showed like that is a transferable skill to the next level. I mean to that, to the regular season, I should say, because he was able to get the three off the dribble. He was Able to get it going to his left, stepping with his left foot, he was able to get. Or going to his right step. And with his left foot, he was able to get it off of his right foot. The footwork was really good. The follow through was good. Like, when you look at that, you said, okay. That you can forecast that going into the NBA. I think the way DeBonta he's. There's a lot of things that he can do. He's trying hard to draw files. I think he's one of those guys that's going to be an early professional foul drawer. And he's. And he's using so many dribbles right now to get where he wants to go. That's not necessarily going to happen when he gets into the regular season. Like, I. I saw a comment they want to get. I think Keyshawn George and AJ debons said to be the ones that handle the ball and get Trey Young off the ball more. Well, good luck with that. Right. Like, that's not. They. Trey Young's always. That's why you pay him $214 million. You don't. Now he can do it. I love Trae Young's game, you know, especially on offense. He can do a lot of things. Things. But that's the kind of stuff you got to let it naturally happen with a debonship. But when it comes to scoring, rising up over top of people, showing quickness, having a mentality that alpha mentality, like, I'm gonna go score it. Yeah, absolutely. And I think Peterson's done the same thing, you know, the way that he's played. And even we could go to Boozer. Boozer.

Yeah. They all forehead. They all four had great games. Yeah. They've.

No question.

And the Michigan guys, I mean, not Mara, but the other two, they played well as well.

Tom was a great pick for Golden State. That was a phenomenal pick. Because now the future, the warriors future people can look at that and say, this guy's going to be good for us for a long time.

Tom, I want to give you a minute on something I know that's really important to you. Your guy, Victor Oladipo is about to have a public workout in Las Vegas on Tuesday. You know, inviting NBA scouts and front office guys and hoping to get another chance. What would you say to those NBA folks who are trying to make a decision on whether or not you give Victor another shot here?

[D]

Quit overthinking it. I mean, just simply quit overthinking it. He's done everything he can possibly do to come back. All right. Don't worry about the metrics and the analytics. He's hit those in his career. He's going to impact your locker room in a positive way. He's got a great spirit about him. He's an excellent teammate. You talked about that, about going to the summer league, and it shows who can be a teammate. He's one of the best, and he can come and he's still young enough and hungry enough that he's going to absolutely contribute to winning early, and then he's going to impact winning. And that's not hopeful wishful thinking. That's a guy that's done this at such a level for the last couple of years of bringing himself back, you know, playing on the foreign team in the exhibition season, going to the G League. I mean, at some point in time, you got to look inside. Let's give the hunger and the passion this guy has a chance because we know he's done it in the past. And it's not like he's 45, you know, he's 33, and he's been through this. So I hope. I hope somebody is smart enough to give him an opportunity. It's not going to cost a ton of money and let him bet on himself a little bit, because that's what he's trying to do.
