The podcast well, this is Matt and Myron here on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app, but Matt and Myron both off today. I'm Andrew Sal juniors Alongside David Dennis Jr. Game three, week three of the college football slate yesterday. What a crazy day. We have week two of NFL action to discuss all day today as we are your show Today here on ESPN Radio. Countdown to kickoff. Taking you up to 1:00 clock to get ready for week two in the NFL. But of course, there was a crazy weekend of college football that we'll discuss all day today. But before we even do that, let's get some pleasantries here. David, what's up man? Good morning.
David Dennis Jr.
Good morning. I am waking up this morning with the facing my own washed mortality because couldn't watch the whole fight last night. I can't do it. I can't do it. There was a, there is a, if you look online, there is a swath, an armada of millennials who all said can we get these fights done earlier. Canelo Crawford, I tapped out in the sixth round. Some, a lot of my friends didn't make a single punch because this thing started at 1am I understand it's on the west coast, but come on, can we do this thing when the streetlights are on? Like, why does this happen?
Andrew Salcunas
Think of us east coast people, you know, us east coast people, we don't want to stay up till one o' clock in the morning. Now I did, but I had other reasons why. Not only did I go see Temple Oklahoma in action yesterday, a beat down, I also had a wedding last night. So while I was, you know, streaming some games on my phone, getting smacked by the wife. Come on, pay attention to the wedding. They're doing their vows right now. Right now. Nobody cares about Georgia, Tennessee. I'm like, I care. I care about this game. I then also did the late night party. And I'm realizing, David, that 31 is not 21 anymore.
David Dennis Jr.
There you go. I have a feeling your wife's not the only thing that was smacking you last night. Yeah, I think a couple, couple of it was Open bar situation.
Andrew Salcunas
Hell yeah. It was an open bar. Open bar and they had the cocktail, you know, people right outside as you're walking into the building. So I was alright, this is how we're starting. We're starting right away. But then again I started at you know like 10:30 in the morning.
David Dennis Jr.
Yes.
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah, I had a tailgate with the Oklahoma people, the Temple people and hang out with my fellow Philadelphians. So busy day, marathon day for you and I and we're both realizing that we're way past our prime. Be a part of Matt and Myron Nation on the Dr. Pepper calling line. Call us at 888, say ESPN. That's triple 872-93776. ESPN Nation is presented by Dr. Pepper. It's not college football season without the delicious taste of a nice cold Dr. Pepper. College football. It's a Pepper thing. What are we thinking about?
Matt or Myron (Host)
I'm trying to think, but nothing happens. Nothing happens.
Andrew Salcunas
It's time to find out. This is off the top. Flash off the top with Matt and Myron. Well, off the top, of course. It was a crazy day in college football yesterday. We saw some upsets, we saw some teams that were supposed to win, but it didn't necessarily look all that pretty. And when they were questioned about it, we popped off. And of course I'm talking about LSU head coach Brian Kelly. LSU. The Tigers beat Florida yesterday 20 to 10. In large part to the defense, I would say in all of the part to the defense. DJ Lagway, the quarterback of Florida. Five interceptions in last night's loss for the Gators. But of course, after the game, right away, speaking of off the top, the first question was about the offense. And Brian Kelly, he took exception. What are you seeing with your offense?
Brian Kelly
Stop.
Andrew Salcunas
Really?
Brian Kelly
Is that the first question? We won the game 20 to 10. Try another question. What do you want me to tell you? I just laid it out for you. We played the game to win the game. We played the game to win the game.
Andrew Salcunas
All right, how about third down then?
Matt or Myron (Host)
What is going on with third down?
Brian Kelly
It's one game. Last game we were great on third down. Your micro. You're looking at this from the wrong perspective. LSU won the football game. I don't know what you want from me. What do you want? You want us to win 70 to nothing against Florida to keep you happy?
Matt or Myron (Host)
No, I think people want to know.
Andrew Salcunas
Why you can't run the ball quite.
Brian Kelly
We can run the ball. Did you see the last play of the game? That's all you need.
Andrew Salcunas
You just need one.
Brian Kelly
There's a ridiculous questions and I'm getting tired of it. That football team just worked their tail off to get an SEC win and you want to know what's wrong?
David Dennis Jr.
You know what? You.
Brian Kelly
You're spoiled. You're spoiled. This team is 17. One at night. 17 and 1. Give them some respect. How about that? Give them some respect instead of micro analyzing every little thing. This is ridiculous. For a group of of seasoned reporters, that kind of question is so out of line.
Andrew Salcunas
Micro analyzing. Welcome to sports. Brian Kelly. That's exactly what we do. So David, a lot to unpack there. Obviously look good win for lsu. Number three in the nation. They found a way to win. But when you're number three in the nation, you are going to be looked at a certain way. You are going to be sort of talked about as how can you continue to climb up to the ranks that may be number one or could you find your way winning the national championship or will this be the reason why you lose? And that's what sports is all about. I don't know what Brian Kelly's missing. I understand it was the very first question of the press conference and people, people took exception to that. But the questioning at some point in that press conference I believe was totally fair.
David Dennis Jr.
It was also you're not. Talk about the offense is not micro analyzing like talk about the. That's a pretty macro question that they're asking here and it's a valid question. I think that there were expectations of this LSU offense to be way more high powered than we've seen so far with a guy who we're looking at as a Heisman Trophy potential at qb. And you know, yes, they did get a win. But it was a valid question. And I think he kind of, you know, I think that Brian Kelly. The idea that people are spoiled by LSU is a little silly also because you have not won national championship in a very long time and there is, you know, there are expectations of you. But it's not about being spoiled. It's not about micro analyzing about valid questions about how what the ceiling is for this team. You kind of blew a gasket for no reason.
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah. If it was roles reversed, let's say Florida beat LSU in this situation and that was the question then. Yeah, that's a crazy question to ask a team that just upset lsu. But that's not the fact. The fact is it was number three, lsu, off of five interceptions.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah.
Andrew Salcunas
Here were their drives, David, I wrote them down for you. Interception number one, they went three and out, they gained one yard. Interception number two, they went three and out. They gained 12 yards, but they had a penalty on the first play of the drive. Then it was the pick six, so the offense didn't have to do anything. Three and out after interception number four for seven yards. And then the final interception was when they had the big 51 yard run. And then they were able to burn clock by kneeing the ball at the end. But of your five interceptions and your four chances offensively, you put up a goose egg. You did not score a single point off of those five interceptions. And if you want to be considered one of the top teams in the nation, which clearly you are when you're ranked number three, you are going to have these questions asked of you.
David Dennis Jr.
And that's the problem with his rant, right, Is that you now go to the film like you just did, or go to the stats and all that stuff and you're breaking down how inefficient this offense was. If he could have just come out there and said, hey, you know, we could have done a little bit better. Didn't get off to the right foot like we wanted to offensively, but hey, we scored, we won the game. I think everybody looks at and says it's fine, but now you're coming out here and you're, you know, lambasting reporter for asking you a question. Now we're going to go granularly at this offense and look at the fact that you just did not get the job done on any of those interceptions. And yes, you got a big run at the end and you could talk about that big run, but that big run also inflated a lot of the stats that you had because it was pretty putrid for the whole game.
Andrew Salcunas
Right? So it's going to be interesting to see how the rest of this week plays out in terms of media availability with Brian Kelly. He was not happy with that question yesterday, but LSU does get the win. They win 20 to 10. Georgia and Tennessee. The game of the day going into overtime. The game that I was trying to stream while at this wedding that I was having a good time at, of course, Josh McRae, one yard run. Here it is how it sounded on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.
David Dennis Jr.
Out of the shotgun, hand it to McCrae. There he goes.
Matt or Myron (Host)
He drives in, they grab him from behind. Did he get the ball over close.
David Dennis Jr.
To the goal line. No signal yet. They say no.
Matt or Myron (Host)
It looked like in the huddle he was trying to extend the ball over.
David Dennis Jr.
The goal line, but there's no signal from the officials.
Andrew Salcunas
After further review, it is a touchdown. Oh yeah. Steve Marlow with the winning call. Rocky Top Crumbles dogs are winners 44, 41 in overt. That's an incredible win for them going on the road to Tennessee. And look your, your defense got beat up a little bit. That Tennessee football team's really good. So you give up 41 points. Obviously the the three in overtime there. But to go on the road as the number 6 ranked team beating the number 15th ranked team volunteers on the road. You heard how loud it was in that stadium. That was an impressive win for Georgia. That's only going to continue to climb up in the polls.
David Dennis Jr.
Absolutely. After being down 14 points early early in that game, that secondary got decimated with some of those long pass. There was a lot of mossing going on with that Georgia squad. Fortunate, Fortunate with a missed field goal at the very end of that game, capitalized. Got to win. Heartbreaking loss out there.
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah, absolutely. For Tennessee. Heartbreaking Georgia Bulldogs now 3. 0. Tennessee falls to 2 and 1. There is a lot to unpack from yesterday's action in college football. We will continue to do so here on Matt and Myron. We tell you what we learned in week three of college football. Coming up next is Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app.

Matt and Myron the podcast runs it himself 50 he's got room 40 watch out.
David Dennis Jr.
It's a race.
Andrew Salcunas
Big John down the sidelines, high stepping 510 touchdown, 51 yard touchdown run untouched. John Matier and that was the voice of Toby Roland from Learfield. John Mattier 51 yard touchdown run yesterday for the Sooners against my Temple. Alice this is Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app. I'm Andrew South Junas in for Matt, David Dennis Jr. In for Myron. Is that what you want to do? Are you in for Myron? Am I in for Matt? We're in for somebody. Both of us are on the air today, hanging out, reacting to week three of college football and of course getting you set Countdown to kick off Week 2 of the NFL slate. We'll get in a lot of the games, every game throughout the course of the show today. But that run you heard there, Mattier 51 yard run. Oklahoma beats Temple 42 3. I was in attendance, David. I'm an Owl, I'm an alum, but I also wouldn't mind seeing SEC action in person. So it was one of those I'm going to support my squad, but I'm going to watch Oklahoma.
David Dennis Jr.
If that were you, were you Temple? Were you Temple Gear top to bottom, were you like with the pride of.
Andrew Salcunas
The I had the cherry in the white. I had a Temple shirt on even though it's the exact same color. So you could, you couldn't really tell who were the Temple fans and who were the Oklahoma fans until Oklahoma started to roll. Then you were able to tell who the Oklahoma fans because they got loud and they had a nice showing in South Philadelphia yesterday. Lincoln Financial Field. But it was an impressive win. Mattier, I thought he had a lot of open receivers that he missed, but he still went 2034 for 282 yards. One touchdown, one pick. The pick wasn't his Fault. It was a great play by one of the defenders for the Owls where he actually ripped the ball from the receiver's hand and then you heard that 51 yard touchdown run. So seven carries for 63 yards. He's now all of a sudden putting his name into maybe a potential Heisman case early, very early. But Oklahoma ranked 13th and they did what they were supposed to do yesterday. They played a non ranked team, a team that not many people have much football respect for when it comes to the big stage. And they went out there and rolled. You saw lsu, we just talked about it. I know Florida is an SEC school, but it was a 20 to 10 final. This was a beat down for an Oklahoma Sooners team that's trying to make, you know, make a name for themselves this year.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah. And that's, that's what it's about. You got to go out there and win these easy, easy, you know, respect Temple easy games and put up points and look dominant and work your way up the rankings. And that's exactly what you did.
Andrew Salcunas
And so it's great that I was able to mention John Mateer and potentially making a Heisman case very early.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah.
Andrew Salcunas
The reason why we emphasize very early is because the last time you and I did a show together, it was right after week zero. It was right before the entire NCAA football season began the following weekend. You and I talked a lot about Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns. And you and I, on the record asking the question, what if he's just a guy? What if he isn't the, you know, the prodigal son that everyone's making him out to be the next Heisman super bowl champion. Right. We're already putting him into Canton at this point. The way that we talk about Arch Manning. And you and I just had a conversation asking a very simple question of, well, what if he's just a guy?
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah.
Andrew Salcunas
And so far he is just a guy. And that's okay. I'm not sitting here saying he has to have been thrown for 400 yards on a weekly basis. But the thing is, you and I didn't ask him to. You and I didn't expect him to. There were a lot of people that had anointed him and already said he's going to average 400 yards a game or 300 yards a game. And once again, yesterday, Arch Manning just kind of looked like a regular guy.
David Dennis Jr.
I want to push back a little bit here and tweak, tweak what we're saying here. I think he looks worse than the guy, like, he looked pretty bad yesterday against a team. I mean, he puts that kind of game together against Georgia, puts that kind of game together against Alabama, against a great defense. Ohio State, you say? Okay, sure, fine. He looked worse, I think this week than he did against Ohio State. I mean, the numbers were bad. He was missing guys, he looked timid. He looked like he was second guessing himself, holding the ball too long. He looked pedestrian against a team that you should like. We were just talking about Oklahoma and Mattia running up numbers, doing that stuff. This was the game where you run up your numbers and he did not look like that. You got three games, you played two of them where you look worse than mediocre and one where you look like a guy. And that's, that's a bad start for a guy who, you know, people are already writing him off as not just a Heisman Trophy winner. People are writing him as the number one pick. There was like tank, like, you know, tanking in New Orleans for Arch Manning. And it looks like this guy is going to have to do a lot of work to even be considered for a draft position if he does in fact go out this year.
Andrew Salcunas
And this is why, David, that I always try to be careful with conversations like this before a season starts about a player, about a kid that we've barely seen, because it almost sets up unfair expectations. And I understand that's the world of sports. What have you done for me lately? There's always expectations. You're supposed to be the savior, you're supposed to be the person that's going to put us to another level. But just because his last name was Manning was not something for me to say, oh, he's going to be really good. And he might be. And I us asking the question, I think is just a fair question. But there are a lot of people that say he's gonna be great. And I think it's almost unfair because he now has to play to a certain level to try to prove what he is able to do. And oh, by the way, once you start talking about him in a certain way and forget Arch Manning, any player, right, think of LeBron when he was first coming out of high school, getting to the NBA, every single team that you're going up against is going to say, oh, this is the guy that everybody's talking about. We're going to play to another level and try to show everybody why they're wrong, why they shouldn't forget about us, why they should talk about the UTEP minors, right? Like they should Talk about us and not just Arch Manning. We know that every single pregame package, audio, visual was going to be about Arch Manning. We are going to go out there and try to do whatever we can to say, hold on, this kid is 19 years old. He played a handful of snaps last year. We're gonna show you that he is not the next Peyton Manning or Eli Manning. And that almost makes it unfair for the kid.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah, he don't look like he Danny Manning out there. Like this dude is. I mean some of these passes, like we gotta understand, like some of these, when you look at some of these screen passes that he was throwing over receivers heads like being late on outlet, like this guy does not look ready to start right now. That's how bad this thing is. And it would be different. I think there was last year. We saw some, a little bit of promise, but we never saw a situation where it felt like he had this big, you know, you know, breakout sort of game that led to all that, all the hype that we were getting. I think a lot of people saw the name, like you said, they saw those expectations and that's what we're going to get. But we're just not seeing that right now. Like we're seeing a dude who is not looking good enough to start college football right now.
Andrew Salcunas
No, I mean it's, it's been a, you know, just a kind of a mediocre start for Arch Manning and there's a lot of eyes on them now. Another game yesterday we had Notre Dame fall to oh and two. Another crazy one. Yeah, obviously we talked about Georgia, Tennessee. That one went into overtime. But a 41 to 40 final Texas a and M gets the win over Notre Dame. Notre Dame falls to 02 to start the season. We obviously know what they were able to do last year going as far as it did in the national football, you know, conference championships and all that kind of stuff. And they start off the season oh and two. And it's amazing that they actually moved up slightly in the polls last week following their own one start. They're now 02 Texas A&M, 16th ranked. So it's not like they had a bad loss. But yeah, you can't be starting the season 02 if you want to be considered one of the top teams in the nation.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah, you got to almost feel like they got to run the table going forward and I'm not sure that they're going to do that. You know, this, that was a heartbreaking loss and one that, you know, we got a couple Teams here that look all ready to have derailed their season, couple with Clemson, I think goes in there with the Notre Dame in terms of teams that have struggled early on that may have already not been able to punch their ticket. It's going to be a rough one for Notre Dame.
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah, it really is amazing. You mentioned it. A couple of teams have already hurt themselves. This year was open. Right. I think a lot of people thought that Texas would win just because of the Arch Manning factor. There was a lot of talk about, you know, let's see what Georgia can do offensively. Alabama, who looked like Bama yesterday, they look like the Alabama of old yesterday. But there were a lot of teams where teams outside of the top 10 were getting talked about as potential championship contenders. And so it looked open going into it, and we're clearly finding that out. A guy like Cade Klubnick, who is talked about as another Heisman candidate because he's a senior, he's been with the Clemson team for a while. Right. He understands the offense. He's. He's also had sort of a mediocre start to the season. And, you know, Clemson dropping games the way they are, this has been a rough start for some of these teams that started in the top 10. It's not going to be like Florida State last year, where Florida State's a top 10 team and then they win three games. But a lot of these teams, and maybe it makes the College Football Playoff that much more interesting that it doesn't look like there's a team, a juggernaut that's just going to run through the slate.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah, We, I think, are finally reaching parody in college football. Right. Like, we're kind of finally reaching this point. The. The playoff helps portal helps. All these things help where we have teams. Like, I'm looking at Notre Dame schedule, I think it's possible they could run the table, actually, and kind of make some noise and still get in there. You know, we could have a team with 2, 3 losses when the national championship.
Andrew Salcunas
Right. Which is. Which is amazing. And that's what this college football season doing, whether they wanted to go to the nil or not. Right. We all. We know all the drama that followed it over the years. Like you said, we're finally starting to get some parity in college football, and it's been very exciting. And these first couple of weeks in the NCAA season has been tremendous. But now we get ready for week two of the NFL. Now that you're filled in on the college games, we're going to get you Ready for a full day of NFL football. We are the countdown to kickoff leading you up to one o' clock kickoffs. That comes right next year on Matt Myron on ESPN Radio.

And Myron the podcast closer and closer to kickoff here on Matt Myron ESPN Radio, the ESPN app. Presented by Progressive Insurance. I'm Andrew Salcunas with David Dennis Jr. We're in for both Matt and Myron and joining us now to get a set for Week 2 of the NFL slate. We love him. He's the coach. The great Herm Edwards joins us. Herm, good morning. How are we today?
Matt or Myron (Host)
Good morning. Excited. It was on Sports center this morning. Good man. Good Morning America as well. And everyone is all of a sudden talking about teams maybe getting off the bad starts owing to, I will say this, that doesn't mean that you're not going to get in the playoffs or you're not going to have a good season. I think we make a big deal of this.02 start. When you look at the National Football League, a lot of football games, a lot of football games left and I think that you like to start better than that. But if that happens to be how you start out, season's not over by any stretch of the imagination. I think this league is a week to week league. It's not who you play, it's how you play the day you play. That's how I kind of look at it.
David Dennis Jr.
Erm, I totally agree. Should not be overact, overreacting to 02. So allow me to overreact to 2 0. Green Bay packers are Super bowl champions. Right?
Matt or Myron (Host)
Tell you what, tell you what, right now if you just, you know, just listen to your eyes and you watch teams play. You don't want to play the packers right now. They're really good. They, they're, I mean, they're really good and they've gotten better. When they got number one, obviously they were already pretty good on defense and now they, they, they, they become one of those big time defenses. So be interesting to keep watching them.
Andrew Salcunas
Herm so you mentioned 02 doesn't end the season, but it might be the end of the season for a team like the Carolina Panthers or the New Orle. But what about the Kansas City Chiefs who lost their first week in Sao Paulo and today they're playing the defending super bowl champions in the rematch with the Philadelphia Eagles. And I think every single year we ask the same question. Is this the year where the Chiefs don't make it to a Super bowl, don't make it to a conference championship? How important to them do you think is today's game against the Eagles and at Arrowhead?
Matt or Myron (Host)
I think it's very important. It's a little bit of revenge game too. You know, when you lose 44 to 20 in a Super bowl and that, you know, then you open the season up and you go on the road and you play the Chargers, a team in your division, and you lose. So right now they haven't won a game in a while. And this is not the nature of the Chiefs when you think about it, because in the regular season, these guys, regular season football, they've won a hundred games, only lost 33, so they're used to winning games in the regular season. This is a home opener for them. They understand that they are playing the can, they are playing the, the team that beat them, the Eagles, in the Super Bowl. So it's a big game. I mean, you know, they want to win again. They want to win their first home game. The crowd will be excited to be a lot of energy in that stadium. But you got to beat the Eagles, you know, you got to beat them. I mean, they're not going to give you the game. They're not going, they're not worried about, you know, going there or it because they are the super bowl champions and they got a good football team.
David Dennis Jr.
All right, let's put the headset back on you her, we'll put you in the Giants locker room. You have a situation with Russell Wilson. We saw how he played. You got Jackson dart waiting in the wing. What is your philosophy going into week two? And then what did you think the dart should actually probably try to take a start.
Matt or Myron (Host)
Well, look, I You know, I haven't been around the young man. I've been in practice. So for me to, you know, say, now he is the guy and going forward, I mean, he is the, he is the future of this organization. You know, Russell Wilson's in a bad spot in this sense. When you think about the schedule the Giants have to deal with, okay, and already they find their self. You know, they lose to Washington division opponent. If they, they lose, you know, they lose, lose to Dallas, okay, then they're zeroing two. It doesn't get any better because then they play Kansas City and they play the Chargers. So the Giants start off with four. And I said this when the season started, I said, whoever gave the Giants schedule is brutal. The first month of football, they play four playoff teams. If this team is sitting at 1 and 3, I don't know. You know, like in baseball, they say, hey, bring the lefty in. Might, might, might see a change.
Andrew Salcunas
Might be that time. Coach Herm Edwards joins us here on Matt and Meyer on ESPN Radio, the ESPN app presented by Progressive Insurance. Baltimore has an in division matchup today with the Cleveland Browns. We know how incredible that game was last week between the Bills and the Ravens. But after a couple of questionable decisions made by coach John Harbaugh, which that's happened in the past, very analytical mind when it comes to two point conversions and extra points, how big of a response is it for the Ravens today? A team of people, myself included, thinks this could be the year they get out of the AFC Conference championship, get to the Super Bowl. But how do you respond after losing the way that they did last week against the Bills?
Matt or Myron (Host)
Well, the Ravens played against the Ravens. You know, they just, they, they, they got to tighten things up. They got to do the little things better. This game was, they, they played a sloppy football game. That's what they did. They didn't finish the game. They didn't close the game out. We can sit here and try to, you know, put it on the coach because he made some calls. Ain't got nothing to do with those calls that they were in control of this football game and they let it get away from them, you know, and this has kind of been their deal of late. You know, they, the details of the game because on both sides of the ball, not one side. On both sides of the ball, they let things get away. They don't close, they don't close the game out. And so this is, this is them. This is the players. This ain't the coach. This is the players at the end of the day. Coaches coach, they make decisions, but players play. And I say that as a former player. I don't say it as a coach. I say as a former player. I didn't need the coach to tell me what to do. Just give me the call, man. I got to go cover the guy. Gotta go cover the guy. In big moments, you know, the big time players got to play good. That's why, that's, that's why you're a star. To be quite honest, the stars want to play good in big moments, and they got a bunch of stars on this team. You can't lose games where they lost last week at home.
David Dennis Jr.
Well, I know we're not, we're not panicking at 02, but there was one team I already panicked at at 01 was the money Miami Dolphins. They looked about as atrocious as you could, as you could look coming out of the gates. And they, but they had a player meeting. And I'm curious about what is your, you know, a lot of times we hear about player meeting, we hear panic, we hear, you know, this thing is, is in trouble. What's your experience been with like, players only meetings and what, what are their impacts? Been in locker rooms?
Matt or Myron (Host)
Well, sometimes you like that. Sometimes you like for players to have meetings. Sometimes you, as the head coach, you go to a couple of your team captains and tell them, hey, you need to, you need to meet with the guys. You take it over. Sure. Team meet with the guys. Now, I don't know if that happened in Miami. I don't know, but I know they had a meeting. But when you watch Miami, they, they, they are, they are not very tight as far as doing the little things. Well. Right? I mean, there's some sloppiness to the way they play, and that's a problem. You know, people are saying they got a lack of discipline. Well, I don't, I don't, you know, I'm not there every week. I don't know. But when you watch them play, there's, there's this sense of what are they? Who are they right now? I mean, I can remember them two years ago when coach first went down there and this was an offense where you watch them on the grass play. You have, whoa, look at these guys. And the offense kind of, you know, set the defense up to play well because they could score points and they could. That's, that's long gone when you watch these guys play. So I just think that this is, these next couple of weeks is big for, for this football team.
Andrew Salcunas
Coach, we're having you on to talk NFL, and it's been a lot of fun talking NFL with you, but we have to play something for you because there's something that caught our attention this morning. Following a press conference yesterday. Here is LSU head coach Brian Kelly.
Brian Kelly
We played the game to win the game.
Matt or Myron (Host)
You play to win the game.
Brian Kelly
We played the game to win the game.
Matt or Myron (Host)
You play to win the game. You don't play to just play it.
Andrew Salcunas
So first off, do you have that trademark and you're getting any money from Brian Kelly?
Matt or Myron (Host)
Because I hope that you. No trademark. If someone told me I should have got that trademark and they were right, I didn't do it. But I love Coach. He's a really good football coach, and I like the way he got after him a little bit. The only thing I tell him is this. You forgot the hello. You got to give them the jingle first. The jingle gets everyone's attention. When you say hello, everybody kind of turns around and goes, oh, wait a minute. You got to say the hello first because that gets everyone's attention. Right. But other than that, I think he was great. Did a fantastic job. You know, when you do something like that, players are listening, right? Players are listening. They listen to press conferences. And this is a true story. I can remember when, when. When I had my little rant, whatever you want to call it, and it was on an off day, and we were 2 and 5. We were struggling, and we had just gone to the playoffs the previous year. And I can remember when the players came in the next day, I was about to start the meeting. I think Chad Pendy stood up and said, coach, I got something to say. I said, stand up. So what you got? He said, we heard you, Coach. We heard what you said. And I looked at the team, I said, you guys heard me, huh? Yeah. I said, we good, everybody? We're good. We won the division. So hopefully those players got the message.
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah. Look, Herm, thank you so much for coming on today here with Andrew Salt, Judas, Dave, Dennis Jr. In for Matt and Myron today. Enjoy the slate of NFL action today.
Matt or Myron (Host)
My pleasure. Thank you for having me.
Andrew Salcunas
Thanks, Coach. There's Herm Edwards joining us here. ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. All right, coming up, we start breaking down today's games, and we're going to look at a team that Shador Sanders didn't want to play for. That's next on Matt Myron on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app.

Ravens were planning to select Shador Sanders in the fifth round with the 141st overall selection. But when he found out, he got word back to the Ravens that he preferred not to go to a place where he would be competing and backing up Lamar Jackson. He wanted to be in a place where that he could play. And so when the Ravens got that message, they pivoted, went a different direction with the 141st overall selection. And three picks later, the Cleveland Browns selected Shador Sanders, who will be in Baltimore today where he could have been spending his NFL career if he were willing to back up. Lamar Jackson preferred not to do that and so Shadore Sanders will make that trip to Baltimore today. Could have been a Raven, but he's a Brown third string on the depth truck.
Andrew Salcunas
Randy well, that's a little wrinkle in the story. This is Matt myron here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app SiriusXM channel 80. I'm Andrew Salcunas alongside David Dennis Jr. We're in for Matt and Myron this morning. Where your countdown at kicked off kickoff 1 o'. Clock. Can't wait. We're gonna have so many games to watch, so many games to talk about. And we will talk about the Ravens Browns game here momentarily. But that report from Adam Schefter changes a lot of the story. David, about Shador Sanders. Still questionable as to why he fell to the fifth round. You and I have talked about this a couple of times. Who knows, is there another instance like this where another team wanted to select Shador Sanders like a Buffalo Bills and he says, I don't want to back up Josh Allen? I don't know how many teams where this conversation may have happened, so maybe we follow up with Adam Schefter about that just one day. But when you hear that report from Adam Schefter, what's your first reaction to it?
David Dennis Jr.
My first reaction is on, on face value, I guess it makes sense, right? You, you are a guy in Shador who originally felt like you were going to go what 9th was the original right possibility to a position where I mean if you're going ninth, you're starting some point, you know, you're starting either halfway through your first season, maybe your second season, something like that to now you're going to play behind Lamar Jackson, which means you're not starting for a while. And you know, for literal unless you maybe start week 17 or week 18 when if the Ravens are, you know, clinched conference or whatever division you can't move around. Doc, you have those options, right? Otherwise, you know, but you know, it's just a bad look. It's a bad, it becomes a bad look once you're a third string on the Browns. Once you're going against the Ravens and everybody's asking why you falling asking the question that we're asking about Shador Sanders, it becomes bad pr. My question is how did this get out? Who put it out and who's that? Who's benefiting from that coming out? Because one of my concerns is that the Browns have been making concerted efforts to make sure that we see Shador Sanders as a as right where he is third. They've been wanting to tamp down the noise about Shador should start, Shador should be a backup. You know, all that stuff, whether it's fair or not, based on where it's planned. There has been a lot of noise about that. And my question is why is this stuff, why are there so many, so much information, so many things coming out from within the Browns or whoever that's adding to that?
Andrew Salcunas
Yeah. And I think the, the worst part when you, when you mentioned the bad look, it's one thing if you were Caleb Williams, right, You're getting drafted number one overall and you may not want to go to the Chicago Bears because we're talking about the first four to five years of your NFL career and do you want to go to a situation where quite frankly it's been bad in Chicago for many years, but we're talking about a fifth round pick. Yeah, right. And I understand your question as to why this is getting out. Why today? Why are we reporting on a third string quarterback? To your point, I agree with you. He has the great first preseason game and Kevin Stefanski Right. Right away has to kind of try to calm the noise and, and bring everybody down a peg. But why today? I don't know. But it's not necessarily a great look for somebody that's being drafted in the fifth round to start talking about where he wants to go. I get what you're saying. Lamar Jackson, he'd be the backup. He's not going to play. There is a chance that he could one day play for the Cleveland Browns because Joe Flacco is not the future. We don't know about Dylan Gabriel, who could actually win a true battle between the two of them, but it is kind of a weird look to say, oh, no, I don't want to go to a team with a very successful quarterback that you could learn behind in Lamar Jackson.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah. And to your point, anytime you're picking between the Ravens and the Browns, you know, you kind of just, it kind of answers itself. Right. I mean, I know he didn't, he didn't know he was going to the Browns at the time, but if you're the ninth pick, you can make these decisions. Right. You're the ninth pick. You can say, hey, I don't want to go play for XYZ team. I'm a top 10 pick. And then you sort of finagle your way to where you want to go. Once you get into the 140s, once you're in the last day, once the state, once the live audience at the draft is non existent, once you're not televised anymore, you kind of got to go with whoever's going to get you. Especially at the time, we didn't know where this dude was going. Right. There was a chance he was not going at all to tell the Ravens this. That deep into the draft, you know, it's a bad look.
Andrew Salcunas
And then I wonder how many other teams this could have happened with. Now, speaking of the game itself, the Ravens, 11 and a half point favorites on ESPN, bet not many people giving the Cleveland Browns much respect at all. I don't think they deserve it, even though they did hang tight last week against Cincinnati. I will give them credit. Myles Garrett was a beast and Joe Flacco was, well, you know, Joe Flacco. But there is a story going into this game. It's the first time Derek Henry's in the second level. I cannot wait for that first meeting between him and Grant Delpit. When Grant Delpit talks about how it's not hard to tackle Derrick Henry, I need to see that first carry David where he gets past the line of scrimmage and it's one on one with him and Delpit. I need to see it today.
David Dennis Jr.
You, you better. You best believe the Ravens are drawing up something where they're going to try to get him there and we're going to have that face off and see what happens. I mean you. This is a little, this example of too much dip on the chip. You couldn't pay me to say that I would be easy to tackle Derek Henry. Like you would have to. Like there's no way that I would say something like that. And to your original point, the Browns looked good defensively against a Bengals team that just does not come out looking, you know, good at all. I think this is going to be a ball like I just changed my eliminator pick to the Ravens over the Browns.
Andrew Salcunas
I think that's the. It's a smart one and it goes and it goes to show you as great of a defensive performance they had against Cincinnati, that Cincinnati Bengals defense is still not good and Joe Flacco could not do much at all. And that's why we had all the conversations that we did. Now there's a question of whether or not Travis Hunter is going to play more this week. Let's go to Cincinnati Jaguars at Bengals. So the plan is for Travis Hunter to play more on defense this week. David, Last week we saw him play a couple of snaps as a corner. We saw him get a couple of targets offensively. I gotta ask this question, fair or unfair? It could be totally unfair because it was only one game. Did you almost wish you saw more last week from Travis Hunter considering what Jacksonville gave up to get him? Like, I almost feel like it should have not have just been these gadget plays where it's kind of the wide receiver screens. Let's try to get him comfortable. You gave up as much as you did, including a future first round pick. And I don't think think Jacksonville necessarily knows what they want to do with him just yet.
David Dennis Jr.
I think it's okay. I think it's okay for now. I think it is okay to slow roll the Travis Hunter thing and figure out where he goes. This is an a once in a generation situation where you have a guy who play both sides. I think figuring out where he goes. And also you got to think about the wear and tear. I'm not too totally concerned about them in the first week of figuring out the Travis under thing. You have time to work this thing out. I think it'll be fire. But my question is what does more look like? Like what does more defense look like? Does it look like he's playing half the snap? Like just six more plays? Like, I don't know what that actually looks like.
Andrew Salcunas
Right. And I just. I just wonder, like, one of the things that I wanted to see out of Travis Hunter early on, or. Excuse me, what I wanted to see Jacksonville do with Travis Hunter was maybe get him comfortable on one side of the ball first. Like, I don't really like this plan. That week one, it was all right, it's going to be wide receiver Travis Hunter, and week two, we're going to try to make him more of a defensive player this week. Like, I would rather you try to get this kid comfortable because much like our conversation earlier about Arch Manning, everything is going to be Travis Hunter related. I know that Trevor Lawrence is still a storyline with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but mainly the storyline will be following what Travis Hunter is like on the field and the fact that you're not letting him totally get comfortable one side of the ball. And I know he wants to play both, but this is one of those situations where you sit down the young kid and say, hey, your time will come, but let's try to get you comfortable on one side of the ball before we start trying to make you the same player that you were in Colorado. I just don't like that. Already week two, it looks like they're shifting.
David Dennis Jr.
Yeah, I mean, they've been already starting. Like, you know when you have a coach who says he could win offensive and defensive player of the year at the beginning, like, it seems like organization doesn't really have a plan for him. But my hope is that they figure it out by the middle of the season.
Andrew Salcunas
By the way, Cincinnati, three and a half point favorites today on espn. You need to see a lot more offensively out of there. I know, I know they played a good defensive team in the Cleveland Browns last week, but this was supposed to be the different year. Right. They actually played in the preseason. They were going to come out the gates a little bit quicker. And Jamar Chase can't have the day that he had. And this isn't a Jamar Chase thing. This is probably Joe Burrow getting to him last week. A really, really weird day offensively for the Cincinnati Bengals. All right, coming up next, we get you ready for an AFCE showdown between a couple teams from New York. That's next on Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app, Matt and Myron, the podcast.
