Is Matt and Myron the.
Matt Jones
Podcast I will insist People with khaki pants are not going to change my life. It's Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio. After three weeks in South Africa, I am back to get you ready for Week 5 of the NFL season with my good friend Meyer Metcalf. We are counting you down to kick off. Myra and I have missed you. Three weeks of being gone, of not getting to see your face and hear your voice and talk to you about all the stories in the world of sports.
Myron Metcalf
Now. It's good to see you. Let me tell you, they didn't play any country music before, so I can see that, like you showed up and now they're overdoing it. That's how it feels a little bit to me. Because they didn't play one country song.
Matt Jones
What did they play while I was gone?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I mean regular music. They didn't play this like regular music.
Matt Jones
You're not. You saying country music?
Myron Metcalf
No, it is. I'm just saying they didn't do this. This was like ESPN overdoing it a little bit with your, with your return. But no, it's good to see you back, man. I didn't hear from you a lot, so I didn't know what had happened. Like, I didn't know I lost my phone.
Matt Jones
Let me tell you something. You go to South Africa.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And you on day five of an 18 day trip, you spill coke on your phone on the way to go see Nelson Mandela and you ruin it. Then that's a problem. But that's a good story. Very few people have spilled coke on their phone at Nelson Mandela's prison at Robben Island. And that's not been able to use it, but I have. Then I was there for two weeks without a phone. So I couldn't reach out to you and talk like we usually do.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. You said, I don't know, I see Nelson Mandela. I was like, there's something. I don't know. I thought he wasn't with us. But you said the prison. I didn't know. I didn't know if it was like a reverse coming to America situation. I don't know what was going on. Like, has he met somebody? I didn't know. So, I mean, it's good to know. You're good, man.
Matt Jones
It was a great trip. I highly recommend to people.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Matt Jones
If you ever get a chance to go to South Africa. Go. It's a beautiful Cape Town.
Myron Metcalf
I heard it's beautiful.
Matt Jones
Cape Town might be the most beautiful city in the world. So I hear a lot of history there. Johannesburg is absolutely wild and is like. There's no place more frantic than Johannesburg. But I enjoyed it. And then I went on a safari. Got to see elephants, giraffes, rhinos, hippos. It was very nice.
Myron Metcalf
Rhino, like, real, like, what they were toy rhinos.
Matt Jones
These were actually.
Myron Metcalf
No, I know, but, like, I always wondered, like. Like, how far were you from these?
Matt Jones
The elephant. The elephant was six feet away from me. In the wild, too. It's not like there's somebody there to stop it. Like, the elephant was looking at me and it was like, why. Why do you say this stuff about Kaylin DeBoer? It had that look on his face when he was looking at me, like, no, I mean, it's. There's an excitement to it. There's a hit. You know, hippos are dangerous. You ever seen those dangerous hippos attacking?
Myron Metcalf
Hippos are the most dangerous. People don't realize, like, they look at hippos are the most. And they can run fast, too.
Matt Jones
Yeah. And they think so. We think of, like, Hungry, Hungry Hippos, like, in that game. But that's not. That's not how they are. But I had a great time. You missed football, actually. Had a lot going on, the games. I watched Red Zone from my glamping tent at Kruger National Park. So I was nice. Chris Hansen helped me with that.
Myron Metcalf
I like it.
Matt Jones
And then, you know, yesterday I was back. This was the first day of back for college football. I think yesterday the story is disappointment, disappointment for some teams and for some coaches. I think you could make an argument that Penn State's loss yesterday at UCLA is one of the biggest upsets in the history of modern college football. It was a 27 and a half or 26 and a half point spread, but leave that to the side. I know there are games that have had higher spreads, but if you just look objectively and say Penn State is A team that thought it could win the national championship and UCLA was.04, pretty much assumed they were going to be. Owen 12 fired their coach and had been not led for one minute in the season up until this point. The idea that they could win that game and kind of dominate three of the four quarters, Myron, is unbelievable.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, there was an LA Times feature this week about the athletic director, Martin Jarman, whom I know, but a lot of people upset. There was a fire Martin Jarman banner over the stadium that someone was flying, like people were upset. The stands. There was nobody in the stands.
Matt Jones
I mean, there was no one there. I mean, there was no one.
Myron Metcalf
This is. You talk about that soccer tournament where, like, Manchester United goes to play some little small team in Europe. It was like that. UCLA had no business being on the same field with Penn State, considering where they are. And yet they go out and beat them. James Franklin has always been fraudulent, in my opinion, in terms of, like, what he represents, this idea that he's this elite coach of this elite program.
Matt Jones
Why do you think people dislike him so much? I mean, he clearly has not won the big game, but there seems to be universal glee when he fails. Why do you think that is?
Myron Metcalf
For me, it's not glee. It's just. I think he has the arrogance of someone who's won a lot more than he actually has. Ok. And I think that's the part that I'm tired of. These, like, these people who grew up. These coaches who grew up watching Nick Saban and Spurry and all these great coaches and. And they somehow think that we're supposed to respect him to the same degree. I think James Franklin has had a lot of that. I think also Penn State fans talk like they're Ohio State, like they're Michigan, and they've never been that. And I think that's what bothers people as well. If you're talking about stuff you did when the Super Nintendo was in stores and. And not anything in modern times, it's hard to respect a team like that. But if you're going to act like you're one of the big boys and you play a game like that, don't be surprised when people knock your entire program.
Matt Jones
So I would say I don't like coaches that sprint onto the field.
Myron Metcalf
That's a lot unnecessary.
Matt Jones
If you were to. If you were to ask Matt Jones, who are his two least favorite coaches in college football? James Franco, Dabo Sweeney. The one thing they have in common is they both sprint onto the field as if they are playing yeah, and so I think that's my problem. But that is a huge loss. I mean, essentially you've eliminated a team that could have been a national title contender. I mean, they're out. They're out. Unless they win at Ohio State, which they will not do. They are out. And there were people who picked them to win the whole thing. Another team that I don't think is out, but is close to out, that would be in the same situation as Texas. I mean, Texas has played five games. Two of them were against teams with a pulse on the road, and they lose, including to a Florida team that had been reeling. Are you surprised that Steve Sarkeesian, Texas, all that talent and Arch Banning have seen their season fall apart before it's halfway through?
Myron Metcalf
Well, apparently it's not all that talent. Right? I mean, the Arch Manning stuff was clearly an exaggeration. And I think you said one of our first shows, Matt, or maybe it was during the college football season that when it got started, why didn't he play more last year? You know, why didn't.
Matt Jones
That's been my opinion forever. Quinn Ewers was not great. So if he awesome, why didn't he play last year?
Myron Metcalf
And I think now that's even more of a fair question because you look at this Texas team and you look at Arch Manning. Has he had some moments?
Matt Jones
Sure.
Myron Metcalf
But this generational talent stuff was ridiculous. I also think this is an indicator of what's happening across college football in that nil, this idea that the big boys are going to have this great advantage. It's actually the opposite.
Matt Jones
I think it.
Myron Metcalf
Even the levels of playing field said.
Matt Jones
That to you from moment one. I always thought the nil thing would end up. Here's what I think it all has done, with the exception of, let's say a Texas Tech where a booster has just decided to spend a zillion dollars to make his team good. In general, what it's done is it's required you to be smart. College football is now becoming like Major League Baseball. And here's what I mean. Having money is going to help. I'm wearing a Dodgers hat even though they knocked out my Reds. But the Dodgers have more room for error. But they still can't be stupid because if they're stupid like the Mets, they won't make it. But you now have a chance to. If you don't have a lot of money and you're smart, you can still make it work, which was really not the case in years before. So you have an Indiana team that's now had back to back good years. Obviously Vandy was in that game with with Alabama yesterday. You have a chance, if you're smart, to make things work. You cannot do, Myron, what you did before, which is just stack loads of talent and overwhelm people because due to money, they will spread out and go to other programs.
Myron Metcalf
And you're watching to your point, Matt, the teams that have been able to adjust to that reality are succeeding. Right? The teams that realize that. Wait a minute. This is Moneyball. I had a college coach tell me the other day that he lost a player as a quote cap casualty.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Didn't want to invest what he thought he was worth. Like, that's the reality of what the sport is right now. And you need really smart people to identify talent. But if you are going to have the arch Mannings of the world, you better make sure that they're as good as you say or you're going to be in a situation, you're going to be in trouble.
Matt Jones
You're exactly right. Indiana plays Oregon next week and it's a perfect example of Oregon's got a lot better chance to be great because they have all that money. But Indiana can compete if they're smart. I don't know if that was true in the old regime. And if you're dumb and have money, which Penn State and Texas did, it doesn't guarantee anything. Speaking of not having success, what about your boy Bill Belichick? Who's breaking up with him first, Carolina or Jordan Hudson?
Myron Metcalf
I'm not getting into the relationship, but Carolina's in a tough spot. He looks, he looks. He looks like he doesn't want to do this. Is that fair to say?
Matt Jones
You switched off that.
Myron Metcalf
I don't, I don't want to get into romantic.
Matt Jones
Why not? It's a beautiful relationship.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know. They may be in love. It sounds like they're in love. I don't know.
Matt Jones
You're in love before you lose to tcu?
Myron Metcalf
I don't know. I don't. I don't know what they got going on, but I will say Belichick looks like he feels like he made a big mistake, you know?
Matt Jones
Why do you think this has been so bad? I mean, it's not. I don't know that I ever thought, but like, they're the worst team in the acc. Like, why do you. I mean, I thought he would just buy his sheer, like, coaching abilities, be able to make him competitive.
Myron Metcalf
It's the reverse of what you just said. I think Bill Belichick knows talent maybe more than anybody. I think he can identify talent, you know, more than most. If you don't have a dude who can bring a locker room together, how is Belichick relating to anybody in that locker room? Okay, once you get past this 26 year old, I feel like he should.
Matt Jones
Be able to relate to him more than anybody. He literally has to deal with one of them on a daily basis.
Myron Metcalf
Dating somebody who's younger than you has nothing to do with. To do with you being able to relate to a locker room full of people. And also people know you're faking it too. I just never thought he was gonna be able to really connect with his locker room in a way that I think you have to be able to at this level.
Matt Jones
See, I thought the opposite. I thought he was gonna have a heads up thanks to Jordan. I thought he was gonna come in and go six, seven and do all the things that the kids say.
Myron Metcalf
I got an uncle who color coordinates his outfits right? And like red shoot like tries to look 22. People laugh at that dude.
Matt Jones
I know, but I still thought he was going to be like he would memorize the Bad Bunny song like I thought. I thought that's what he was going to do. And he hasn't done any of it. And it's been disappointing.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, you don't want to see the old dude at the Drake concert. That's not. He's not as cool as he thinks he is. And when you're losing is really. When it's.
Matt Jones
No, it's really not as cool. It's not. Look, I think, well, you know, I wanted this, him to be better because I wanted the Jordan, the Jordan Bill thing to be a lot more of a story. But I think it's kind of, it's.
Myron Metcalf
Kind of how true that love is in a second.
Matt Jones
That's exactly right. We will. It's, it's, it's real true. If you're broke and losing be a part of Matt Meyer Nation on the Dr. Pepper call in line. 888 say ESPN. That's 888-729-3776. Matt Jones
It is Matt Myron here on the ESPN radio. You know, back in the day is this Tribe Called Quest, by the way. See, I know. Don't act like just because I have a twang. I don't know the music.
Myron Metcalf
You love bringing up Tribe Called Quest, by the way. Do you know you do that a lot? Like you just randomly be like, I had the Tribe Called quest albums in 19.
Matt Jones
What do you want from me? I like Tribe Called Quest. Q tip. Right?
Myron Metcalf
But it's like your black icebreaker. Like that's kind of like you walk in the networking events like ready to use that.
Matt Jones
Well, because I think it gives you some credibility. Like if I come in and I'm like, well, when I was a kid I watched the Jeffersons. I don't think you get quite as.
Myron Metcalf
Much don't do that.
Matt Jones
Don't do that.
Myron Metcalf
But if I say that I liked Q Q tip. Yeah, yeah. You know, Jefferson's is a giveaway like that. You're forcing it. Like, I know you're lying, but no tribe conquest.
Matt Jones
Exactly. Went to the barbecue one or two times. Yeah, that's Matt myon here on ESPN radio. This is what ESPN's missed. They, like, had actual sports show for three weeks, and then all of a sudden now. Now you get this. The Vikings are playing the Browns in London right now. Sports tied at 6, 7. It's Carson Wentz and Dylan Gabriel. Not exactly the matchup that. That a lot of people thought we were going to export to London. Carson Wentz, however, 7 to 9, 73 yards. Dylan Gabriel's got a touchdown pass to Harold Fannin Jr Dylan Gabriel got the start. They decided to move on from Flacco. Not a huge shock. Shador Sanders was asked about it. He ended up doing his, like, mime routine, which I didn't totally understand. Myron, what do you make of that whole thing?
Myron Metcalf
First off, I don't know if you were here. I don't know when you got back, but when it was announced that Dylan Gabriel was starting, people are like, big news in sports. Dylan Gabriel's gonna get the start. I'm like, what? That's like when somebody's like, hey, get this trivia question right? You get 10 cents off your coffee. It's not that exciting. People act like this. This, like, superstar was coming in. It says more about the dysfunction of the Cleveland Browns than anything else. But I think we didn't even talk about it because it was the Shador Sanders weirdness, the whole miming thing, which I think was a response to Rex Ryan on espn, but I think it was. Yeah, but it was odd. What I think Shador Sanders is doing is everybody who going into the draft was like, listen, there's some other stuff that teams don't want to deal with because he's not talented enough for them to want to deal with this stuff. You're seeing some of that now.
Matt Jones
Well, let's talk about the other stuff, because it was interesting to me from afar. Now, I wasn't following it minute to minute, but let's go to Rex Ryan's comments first. Because Rex Ryan said something to the effect of, look, if I know about what's going on, then the whole league knows about what's going on. Even though he didn't say what that was, clearly the implication was something is happening behind the scenes. That's Also a part of this. Then you heard a lot of Pete. There's just. I feel like with es, with. With. With announcers, NFL announcers on all the various platforms, hearing a lot of references to some kind of something happening that I guess I didn't get the insider memo as to what it was that he's doing in the locker room.
Myron Metcalf
Because.
Matt Jones
Because it sounds like everybody's going, look, your locker room doesn't like you. What do you think that people are talking about?
Myron Metcalf
I don't know if there's anything specific, but this is a guy who at one point last year was viewed as a possible number one pick who failed to the bottom of the draft. Right.
Matt Jones
But there's clearly something going on.
Myron Metcalf
But I think that's part of it, though. I think clearly the NFL knew something in terms of what it would be like to deal with Shador Sanders. I don't think he's a bad kid. I don't think there's a bunch of character stuff necessarily. But I do think there is a guy who may not be handling not being in the spotlight. I don't even remember a time when the third quarterback even talked to the media.
Matt Jones
Tim Tebow. I mean, this is Tim Tebow. Again, completely different people, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yes.
Matt Jones
So completely different people. But this was always, in my opinion, once the league established the idea that Shador Sanders was not a first round talent. And I'm just going to trust that the league believed that or somebody would have picked him.
Myron Metcalf
Yes.
Matt Jones
Then I think once he's not a first round talent, then it's like, well, then do we have to deal with all this? I mean, Tim Tebow is a perfect example. The Denver Broncos decided to get him at the end of the first round. But I've heard people say that if he had gotten out of the first round, it might have been like the fifth round for this exact same reason. Because people would have been like, oh, we have to deal with all this stuff. For Tim, it was more like the way the world looked at him. It wasn't him necessarily, but I do think that's what you're seeing here. Right?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, Tim Tebow was closer to playing, I think, than Shadour Sanders is right now. I mean, I think that's the thing is.
Matt Jones
Well, clearly, because he played well for.
Myron Metcalf
A little while and Tebow had, you know, Shadur was big in college. Tebow was a superstar in college. Right. But I think the thing with Shador is. And he also had the comment of look around the league, you know, of course, I think I can play.
Matt Jones
Well, let's talk about that comment. I mean, that comment to me was the first thing besides the miming he's done. That gave me an indication of what Rex Riot is saying. When you get up and say, I looked around the league and I'm better than a lot of these guys, I mean, that's pretty rude. I mean, there's only 32 quarterbacks. Probably 25 of them are pretty solid. So you're really talking about seven guys. And it's quite a shot at those guys. Right.
Myron Metcalf
It's a lot like the dating game in 2025. People don't know who they are. Right. They think they're a 10, so they're looking at tens and they're a five and a half. Right. Listen, he lacks self awareness. I think that's. And here's what I think he's dealing with too. This is the first time in Shadur Sanders career where he actually had to fight for a job. His father has been his coach since he was in elementary school. Like, this is the guy who came into every single fall being like, I'm the starting quarterback. If you can't crack the Cleveland Browns quarterback rotation map with Joe Flacco, who was literally on the couch a year ago with Dylan Gabriel, if you can't rise to the top of that, then maybe you don't even have a place in this league. But here's what he's doing.
Matt Jones
It's also, I think it's worth noting it's a shot at Joe Flacco, who, yes, he's 40 plus years old. Yes, he's probably too old to be in the league, but he's well respected around the NFL. He's won a Super bowl and everyone likes Joe Flacco. And when you get up and say, I'm better than a lot of the guys in this league I should be playing. One of the people you're talking about is Joe Flacco, since he had the job right.
Myron Metcalf
Directly talking about him. I think what he's also doing is how many backup quarterbacks in this league were just likable dudes who played for 10 years. There's a world where Shador may never be a starter, but can do enough to grind the Teddy Bridgewaters. You can hang around this league and in this era make $100 billion. Matt just kind of being a good dude ready to go. And it's almost like he's torpedoing his entire shot at lasting in this league.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I don't get it. You. I would have thought somebody, I mean, Dion is a perfect example of someone who understood what media image was and seemed very self aware of what he was doing. And his son doesn't seem to be doing that. And yeah, I don't get it. But right now Dylan Gabriel's playing 77 in London. By the way, the Broncos and the Eagles will play today. Coverage begins on ESPN radio at noon. Then we got baseball, Yankees, Blue Jays 330, Game 2 Tigers, Mariners 7:30 on ESPN radio. Full of sports today, all day on ESPN radio. Herm Edwards, I missed him. We're going to talk to him. That's next on Matt Myron, hey, Ryan.

Myron Metcalf
Commanders at Falcons. I I love you, Lance. We probably got to go a little bit faster here with all the teams we got. No, you don't have to be super sure. But Matt, Matt's all. Matt always does that to me. So you got to go faster. Okay. We kind of got to go rapid fire. We got two minutes left. Matt would be losing his mind right now, by the way, if we had this many games left. Like it would be the whole show. Ravens at Chiefs. Okay, now I think we just have to say the team name at this point. Hackers at Cowboys. Matt Jones will be losing his mind right now. Give me the Packers.
Matt Jones
I don't lose my mind. Only when I watch the Cowboys defense.
Myron Metcalf
Mad Matt is probably screaming in Africa right now.
Matt Jones
You know, see, it's not as easy to drive the ship, is it, Mark? So, see, like, it's easy for you to. But when you have to actually meet the time constraints, now you see what happens.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, I don't think you realize how we got to like two minutes left and we had like eight games.
Matt Jones
We were. Our time.
Myron Metcalf
It was way, way off, man. And I was like, wait a minute. This is not the pace we normally go at.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And then we got to about the two minute. It was like, at one point I was like, we're not gonna finish, James.
Matt Jones
They don't appreciate you till you're gone. Like, Myron's always complaining. And then when he has to be the one to hit the time cues, then. Then it's a different story.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I was at one point like, we're not going to finish. I was like, what are we going to do if we don't get to the game? I was at that point also, you.
Matt Jones
Know, we'll be good. Don't worry. I'll make sure that you get it. We're here. Matt, Myron, counting you down to kick off. I'd love to hear from you. By the way, you can Write on Twitter, KY Sports Radio, or on the text machine. 772-7745254. We'll take your calls a little later in King of the Mountain, but we are right now 77 Browns and Vikings. When you. When I told you before the game Carson Wentz versus Dylan Gabriel, you probably would have said, well, that'll be exciting. And you would have been wrong because it's not exciting right now. Myron, to watch this game in London, do you like, like next year we're probably getting one of these games every single week. Do you like that?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I just don't know. We're getting back, but that's a whole nother conversation. I mean, you know.
Matt Jones
All right, all right, Mr. President, you. You want all trade wars.
Myron Metcalf
It's also. I understand, but also like, we' giving them like Carson wins versus Dylan Gabriel, too. You know what I mean? And then like eight Jaguars games. You know, the Jags are good now, but that hasn't been the case for a long time. I just don't know the plan. Does the info want a team in Europe? Is that a real thing?
Matt Jones
Yeah, probably. I mean, the thing you don't realize till you leave America and go somewhere is that the NFL is just a non thing anywhere else in the world. Like, it's just not a thing. And we are so used to it dominates every single platform of discussion in sports in the United States. But it's just, you don't, it's. You don't know. I got you, Cam, you didn't have to give me six sentences on Herm being there.
Myron Metcalf
Cam gave us a whole.
Matt Jones
Cam sitting there talking. I'm trying to come up with sentences. And he is in my head going, herm Edwards is sitting down.
Myron Metcalf
Sitting down. And he has a new head, shoes and a. In a red coat.
Matt Jones
All right, Cam, do you know how hard it is to talk when someone's talking to you in your ear?
Myron Metcalf
The sound blanked out for like 18 seconds. I don't know what you said.
Matt Jones
I was in the middle of a sentence and I didn't know what I was saying. Matt, Myron here count you down to kick off. All right. Is Herb Edwards in there right now? Is he ready to go?
Herm Edwards
We're still getting him set up.
Matt Jones
We're still getting him set up. Okay, that's. All right.
Myron Metcalf
Well, if you wouldn't have talked to us for the last 30 seconds, you could have been working on getting them set up. That's half the problem.
Matt Jones
But back to the London thing for a second. You don't realize how little people sort of pay attention to the NFL outside the world. And I think the goal is put one or two teams in Europe. Make it to where when people go over there, they play them both, right? So it's a two week trip. I think that's what you're going to end up saying.
Myron Metcalf
Who would you send? Like, who's, who's the most likely candidate that you give up?
Matt Jones
Well, I think you, I don't think that's what you do. I mean, I think what you're going to see the NFL do is probably sometime in the next decade, you add like four teams, right? You do it over some period of time. Maybe you put one in Europe, you put one in south, maybe two in Europe, one in South America, maybe one in like Australia. And that's what you're doing. I think that's what they're going to do one day.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. You could give them the Panthers, though. We'd be okay, right? It wouldn't, it wouldn't be a protest.
Matt Jones
What's wrong with the Panthers? Herm Edwards is there. Herm, it's nice to. I hear. I know you've. You, you're back and you're rolling and it's good to have you.
Herm Edwards
Thank you, my friends. And you know, I looked at my schedule and I knew something was wrong. I said, you know what? I'm generally on radio with my guys on Sunday. And then I walked over here and they said, coach. And I was like, I'm late. I'm sorry. I said it wasn't on my schedule.
Matt Jones
But you know you're always late. I know, I know. Why are you always late? Thank you.
Herm Edwards
I'm scared to death. That's the one thing I'm afraid of.
Matt Jones
But you really are always late. You're like ex girlfriends of mine. I just have to put in a 10 minute curve with you.
Myron Metcalf
Wait, what? Where is what?
Herm Edwards
All right, here we go.
Myron Metcalf
I'm just saying.
Matt Jones
I'm just saying there's a 10 minute Herm curve.
Herm Edwards
I'm glad I could squeeze y' all in because I got GMA again at 1 o'.
Myron Metcalf
Clock.
Herm Edwards
You know, my important things are, you.
Myron Metcalf
Know, Herm, he just got back from a trip, so, you know, he's got, he's got a little bit of jet lag.
Matt Jones
Herm, I was in South Africa for three weeks.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, wow.
Herm Edwards
How good was that, huh?
Matt Jones
It was awesome. It was awesome.
Myron Metcalf
He didn't call anybody, by the way, either. He didn't reach out.
Matt Jones
Herm, I still found a way to be on time today. So that's where.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, you can get.
Herm Edwards
Don't you anymore. I'm good.
Myron Metcalf
Herm, you're good.
Matt Jones
You're good with her kid, with you. You know I love you. You know I love you. All right. Since I've been gone the last three weeks. So I, so I come back and I look at things and I sit and I see some teams and I go, all right, is this team for real or not? So I'm going to give you a couple of teams here. Herman, I want you to tell me when we get to week 11, is this team for real? Buccaneers and Seahawks are playing today. They're both three and one. Are they for real?
Herm Edwards
I like, I like Tampa. I like Baker Mayfield. I like what he's all about. You know, I just think they're. Now, I think this is, this is a tough cast today. I mean, you know, but, but, but I do believe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are for real. They'll win that division.
Matt Jones
Okay, what about the Seahawks?
Herm Edwards
I don't know so much, you know, NFC west, pretty complicated division when you think about it. You know, I think San Francisco, when they get healthy again, they're going to Be much better. And the Rams are hard out. So in Arizona kind of medicine around.
Matt Jones
But Sam Darnold's looking. We thought he was one or two year thing, and now maybe he's turned it around.
Herm Edwards
Yeah, he's been to a bunch of teams. You're pulling for him, that's for sure.
Matt Jones
All right, what about the. What about the Colts? Indiana Jones, Daniel there. Is that. Is that for real?
Herm Edwards
Boy, I tell you what, that was hard for me to grasp. You know, like, you go the Colts.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Really? The Colts.
Herm Edwards
I said, is, did Peyton Manning go back? You know, And I'm like, no, it's just Daniel Jones. Daniel Jones. And you know what? I pull for guys like that that have found a way and now found a place that really has offered them the olive branch and really built the offense around his skill set.
Matt Jones
And they might have the best running back in the league right now.
Herm Edwards
You know, that division's. I mean, who would have ever thought that the Texans was going to be one and three right now? Right?
Matt Jones
All right, what about the Jaguars? Another team in that division? Are they for real? With my guy, Liam Cohen, former UK offensive coordinator.
Herm Edwards
You know what? It's about time that Trevor Lawrence played up to the building. That's what I'm going to say, you know, because his first year or so, everybody. Yeah, yeah. And I was like, yeah. And then all of a sudden he hit this spot where it's like, what's wrong with this team? What's wrong with this guy? Now all of a sudden, he's kind of found his way again. So I'm okay. I'm okay with the Jaguars. I like the way they're playing right now.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Speaking of the Jaguars, what bothered me about the Travis Hunter conversation, Coach, was that people pretended as if we haven't had athletes in the NFL for decades who could play multiple positions. Right?
Herm Edwards
Correct.
Myron Metcalf
There have been so many great athletes who could have done that.
Herm Edwards
Yes.
Myron Metcalf
But they didn't do it because it's just that hard. Travis Hunter comes in and people say, this is going to be different. There's a generational talent. He can play both sides of the ball. Coach, he's not good on either side of the ball right now. What would you do with Travis Hunter if you were Jackson?
Herm Edwards
When I drafted him, I used to play corner.
Myron Metcalf
You would have told him that. What if he said. What if he says, I'm not. I'm not coming to let you.
Matt Jones
But you don't trade up for him. If you're going to play, just play him at corner. Right. He's not the number two pick then.
Herm Edwards
Well, you know, that's. That can be discussed, but wherever he goes, I'm playing him at corner. And then as he works in during the season, maybe halfway through the season, if you feel like he's doing okay, you give him a couple plays on offense, you have third down situations, Red. But. But no, he's a. For me, he's a defensive guy. He can help me more on defense than anywhere else. Why? Because he can go over on one side of the field, guard the opponent. And here's what I like about him the most. He can catch the football.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
He can take the football away because he can catch. Right. And that's what you want on defense. You want to take the ball away. He can do that. But right now, look, this was disaster when they said they're going to play this guy both ways.
Matt Jones
So you thought that was a mistake. Oh, my God.
Herm Edwards
You can't do it to the guy. It's not fair to him. This is not fair to the kid. His head is probably swimming right now. Right. With all the information he's trying to gather. Guys, he's playing in the NFL. These are the best players in captivity that he's playing against.
Matt Jones
Now you. I thought the most important game last week was Chiefs. Ravens for one. I thought it was okay. Which one is actually for real. And the Chiefs to me looked like the Chiefs. So I got two part question. First of all, are the Chiefs back on track? Or at least were they. Now we know they're on track. And then B, I know Lamar is out today, but even when he returns, is it the Ravens just their defense is too bad.
Herm Edwards
Well, who would ever imagine that the Baltimore Ravens would not play defense?
Matt Jones
None.
Herm Edwards
That's worse than the league almost. That's. That's blasphemy when you say something like that. It's hard to say that coming out of your mouth. The Ravens can't play defense.
Matt Jones
What?
Herm Edwards
That's Baltimore Ravens.
Matt Jones
That's what they do, play defense.
Herm Edwards
They can't play defense. And you know, now Lamar being out, that doesn't help them a lot. And so, you know, they have a defense now where if you're a Raven offensive player, you feel like you got to score at least 24 just to be in the game. Just to be in the game. So it's unbelievable. Chiefs on the other side, they're back.
Matt Jones
As soon as you got Xavier Worthy, it's a different offense and it's just.
Herm Edwards
It'S more explosive again. Right. And that's what? That's what you see right now. Although Patrick Mahomes was off a little bit earlier in some games, but they look different. You know, their defense kind of held them in there, but now all of a sudden they have that. That.
Matt Jones
And when Travis Kelce doesn't have to be your primary option, now all of a sudden you got something right.
Herm Edwards
That's exactly right.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
True. Yes.
Myron Metcalf
Coach, what would you do with an Eagles team where you're winning?
Herm Edwards
Oh, boy.
Myron Metcalf
But you got wide receivers who are publicly upset, and that's become the headline. How would you handle that in the locker room with A.J. brown and everything that's happening with.
Herm Edwards
Well, you know, obviously it starts with your coordinator and, you know, you got to disperse plays to certain players. And I think, you know, I was always big on this, like having Tony Gonzalez. I said, look, he's got to get at least 12 targets. I don't care what you call, how you call it, but the ball's got to go to him 12 times. Now, will he catch all 12? I don't know that, but he's going to be involved.
Matt Jones
Why would you do that? Why did you feel like you had to do 12 first?
Herm Edwards
Well, there's a number. There's always a number. Because you figure if you run offense, you're going to get 60 plus plays.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
All right, so if you're a running team, the runners got to carry at least 20 times, right? So, look, saquon bark's got to carry 20. At least 20. Okay, so then where else do you go with the ball? Okay. A.J. brown, is it 15 targets? Okay. All right, well, that's. Okay. Here you go. That's 35 plays already.
Matt Jones
I want to play for you.
Herm Edwards
You know what I'm saying?
Matt Jones
15 times.
Herm Edwards
I mean, you'll get 15 targets in a game. Think about it.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
I mean, you're the best receiver they got. I mean, you can move. Because right now I think they got.
Matt Jones
To throw the ball to be able.
Herm Edwards
To run the ball.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
Because everyone is. There's 10 guys in the box.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
Guys, we said it last year. Saquon Barkley ran for 2,000 yards. I said, there ain't no way he's running for 2000. It ain't even going to be close this year. Yeah, because they're not going to allow Saquon Barkley to beat you.
Matt Jones
They still won last week.
Herm Edwards
They're the ugliest 4 and O team in captivity right now.
Matt Jones
You're probably right. All right, I got to ask you this. I know you love Football, Yes. There's some horrible games on the schedule.
Myron Metcalf
Well, then I want to ask.
Herm Edwards
Well, they're just gangs.
Matt Jones
I want to ask you, even Mr. Football love himself Edwards, would you make time to watch either Giant Saints or Dolphins, Panthers, Would you make time to watch those two games?
Herm Edwards
Personally, I would, because it's a football game.
Matt Jones
So at Dolphins, Panthers, you're clearing out the schedule to watch it.
Herm Edwards
I mean, you're not asking me would I buy a ticket to go. But it's free television. I'm gonna watch it. I mean, because you know what, you're still waiting for, like Miami to be this team that it. Remember when Miami, like couple years ago and they had that offense, it was like, woo. Now all of a sudden people have caught up with it. I mean, and it's like, man, they're not the same team right now. Carolina, you're looking at them, you're going, man, what's, what's wrong with the Panthers all of a sudden? Football is a funny deal, boy. As soon as you think you're kind of good and you got it figured out, then all of a sudden the next year you're like, we got the same guys. What's wrong? Right?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
Can't figure it out.
Matt Jones
Well, there's some bad teams playing against each other. Herb, good to see your face. I appreciate it. Next time when we say it's 10:30, I'll be here, you know, we're going to assume it's 1040, but we love you. I will promise you I will be here. I'm getting with you. It's great to see you. We will be. It's Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio.

Matt Jones
It's Matt myron here on ESPN radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Dr. Pepper. Colin lines 888 say ESPN might talk to you at some point. Got baseball games today, got football games today. We're gonna talk a little bucks. Seahawks, lines, Bengals. I just.
Myron Metcalf
I like.
Matt Jones
Sometimes I see the headlines of sound. We can play Myron.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And this says, for Lions, Bingles, I could play sound by Emmett Golden. And the headline is, doesn't understand why everyone seems to love Jake Browning. Who loves Jake Browning? Did I miss a Jake Browning love March while I was gone? By who?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I think a lot of people were like, you know, the Bangles are going to be okay. Who? Because Jake Brown. A lot of people because Jake.
Matt Jones
I mean, we've had Jake Browning play before, and they stunk like they were.
Myron Metcalf
They were 500. They were actually okay. When he had that stint two years ago without Joe Burrow, he wasn't great, but he wasn't terrible. So I think a lot of people thought they had a capable backup.
Matt Jones
I didn't know that there was a Jake Brownie who. Who's leading the Jake Browning.
Myron Metcalf
People are excited about. Who are the people that are excited when it. When it came out that Joe Burrow got hurt, the reaction was, yes, this is a bad deal, but at least you have a capable backup in Jake Browning. That was the response from a lot of people.
Matt Jones
Well, I don't know where those people were talking right now, by the way. Still, by. If you've been following still seven. Seven Vikings and Browns. Carson Wentz is hurt. Yeah, he is in the back. And now the new Vikings quarterback, at least for now, will be Max Brosmer. He's tossing the ball on the sideline. He began the season his third string. Now he is first string coming up, Max Brosmer. I don't know who that person is. So, Myron, will you give me what I need to know about Max Brosmer?
Myron Metcalf
You should know about Max Brosnan because he's a huge, huge story here. He played for the University of Minnesota.
Matt Jones
Okay. Why should I know him? Because he played for Minnesota.
Myron Metcalf
Well, he played for University of Minnesota, so this is a potentially like a Disney movie kind of thing. Yeah. A lot of people didn't think he was an NFL guy. Ends up with the Vikings, you know, probably had to give up his apartment. Probably didn't have to give up his apartment.
Matt Jones
This is like. You're saying this is like Frozen, but the Max Bras story.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, if he. If he ends up being good. Okay, here's the thing. Let's say he's great right now.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Carson doesn't come back and he leads them to a win. And JJ McCarthy still hurt. Let's say Carson Wentz is hurt and let's say he just starts winning.
Matt Jones
Okay. I mean have one play before we start the script to the.
Myron Metcalf
We're three weeks away from somebody sending Disney the proposal. That's all I'm saying. If it happens. University of Minnesota kid leading the Vikings potentially to the playoffs. If that happens. That's a Disney store.
Matt Jones
Okay, I want you let's. It is 10:52 in the AM on the east Coast. This is Perspectives I would like for you. I would like for someone to write down the time and say Myron is predicting.
Myron Metcalf
That's not what I said.
Matt Jones
Max Brosmer.
Myron Metcalf
That's not what I said. That's not what I said.
Matt Jones
That's what I said. That's what I heard.
Myron Metcalf
No, no. I said if in fact he's good. It's an easy Disney script. He went to the University of Minnesota down the street from where the Vikings play. Probably didn't even give up his lease. Probably lives in the same apartment.
Herm Edwards
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And in college you are just making facts up about Max Brosmer now hoping that they. Are you trying to get it to where they option your. Your writing of the Max Brosmer story for the movie.
Myron Metcalf
I'm the closest writer ESPN has to it. You know so.
Matt Jones
Well, we will be keeping you up to date on this new Max Brosner epic happening in London in front of eight to 10 people watching at Tottenham Stadium Now. The Buckets play the Seahawks today in the only matchup of teams 3 and 1 or better playing against each other. On paper this is the best game of the day. Although I don't think people would have seen it. Sam Darnold's played very well actually. I think has been maybe one of the surprise of the season. I don't think people thought he would continue his success in Seattle. Baker has been awesome and fun. Who you like today in on the west Coast.
Myron Metcalf
I like that this game shatters your entire theory about quarterbacks and which ones you should pay. Your whole thing has always been either you have.
Matt Jones
It's not over.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, hold on. Either it's you have a rookie quarterback and you're building around them on that contract or you have a guy who's a max deal guy who is so good he makes up for.
Matt Jones
You're missing whatever you don't have what I said. You're missing what I said. I said you can't win a Super bowl without one of those guys. But my Comment was this game actually proves my comment, which was, if you can't have one of those guys, then go do a Sam Darnold or Baker Mayfield kind of thing. Go get a guy who's mid level. He can get you to the playoffs. Now, I don't think he can win a Super Bowl. Sam Darnold and Baker Melfield night, where you lose, remember, remember, my point is not who you're who quarterback. My point is who you don't pay. You don't go pay the dude making zillions. And neither the Bucks or the Seahawks have done that.
Myron Metcalf
They've paid them significantly. Not, not 50 million. They have paid 50 million.
Matt Jones
I, I, I am okay with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold contracts. What I'm not okay with is giving Baker Mayfield $55 million. If they did that, I would say that's a mistake.
Myron Metcalf
Well, the idea for the Minnesota Vikings that were watching right now is they thought Sam Darnold wanted too much money, wanted 40 million plus.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Myron Metcalf
They didn't want to bring him back at that number. They thought last year was about as good as you were going to get from Sam Darnold. And right now it looks like a mistake. They've got a guy who played down the street from them at quarterback right now because their quarterback room is all messed up.
Matt Jones
And that might be true, but what's Sam Darnold making in Seattle?
Myron Metcalf
What's, I don't know, 40 million plus.
Matt Jones
He's making. He's making 40 million plus.
Myron Metcalf
40 million plus.
Matt Jones
Okay. Well, then let's see how that works out at the end of the year because that strikes me as being too much money for him.
Myron Metcalf
But, I mean, but then, but you could also the challenge, if you're a Minnesota team, you end up in a situation where if you don't hit it exactly right with a rookie quarterback or a guy you have, then you're in a bad situation.
Matt Jones
But you could have Max Brosmer, who, according to you, is going to have a Disney movie written about him. So this may all end up working out as Max Brosmer in his apartment down the street, where he goes to the local grocery store, ends up becoming a star, as Myron Metcalf predicted. And we will find out during these two hours. It's Matt Myron here. We'll talk a little baseball next on ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf
Matt and Myron, the podcast.
