The podcast it is Cat down the kickoff here on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance Matt Jones. Myron Metcalf here on a nice Sunday morning. I'm in Lexington, Kentucky. He's in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We can be a part of Countdown to Kickoff Nation on the Dr. Pepper calling line. 888 say ESPN. That's 888-729-3776. ESPN Nation presented by Dr. Pepper. It's not college football season without the delicious T of an Ice cold Dr. Pepper. College football. It's a Pepper thing. Myron and I are here. Myron, I have the final remnants of a cold. And I thought I lost my voice last night. Wasn't sure I was going to be able to do it. Got up this morning, felt like I could, but I'm probably going to be relying on you and our callers if they'll open up the phones. 888 say ESPN to pick up the slack a little bit because my voice is struggling.
Matt Jones
Why don't you ask people for the best cold remedy, man? Cause I always think that's cool because people have different ways to knock out colds. What I think is funny is that you texted us and you said, I don't have a voice right now. And then I said, you know what, don't worry about it, Matt. I'll drive the show. I'll lead the show. And you were like, yeah, that's not gonna happen. Well, without a voice, you didn't trust me to lead the show.
Myron Metcalf
No, I felt like me. I felt like kind of me with half a voice is still greater than you with a whole voice in the driver's seat. You are a good second chair, right? Like, somebody's gotta be Michael, but somebody's gotta be Scotty. And like, if you're Scotty, like, I don't, I don't. I'm not Tony Kuko. So we gotta, like, you know, it's just how it works.
Matt Jones
But I just love you. Shut it down pretty fast. Like, you didn't. You didn't even take time to really think about it. Which was?
Myron Metcalf
Well, somebody told me that you had, like, something happened on here on Friday.
Matt Jones
What happened? What do you mean? I don't think I did it. Oh, do you want to hear it?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. So I. This is the first time I've heard this, but I've been told by a couple people you should have heard what happened with Myron on ESPN Radio on Friday. So I don't know what this is, but let's just go ahead and play Quick setup.
Matt Jones
Myron was hosting on Sportsmanlike, and this is what happened as we went to break. Myron and I will debate it next. But first, Myron has this word from our friends at Vivid Seats. Does the college football overtime rule need to change? Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah, that's me. Right? Does the college football overtime rule need to change? But first, Myron has this. I just read.
Myron Metcalf
You're gonna have to repeat that part.
Matt Jones
I got all the argument. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Wow. You. Ron Burgundied it, right? Whatever it is that shows up on your screen, you'll just say it.
Matt Jones
It wasn't clear, man. Like, you gotta bold out what I'm supposed to read.
Myron Metcalf
But when you saw your own name to throw to, did you kind of think maybe I shouldn't throw it to?
Matt Jones
I thought they made me a part of the read. I didn't know what was going on, but, you know, I don't do a lot of live reads. So. Yeah, it was a. It was a slight error. A slight that should disqualify me from leading the show if you don't have a voice. You know what I mean?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think it disqualifies you. I think the fact that at any given time, you might say anything unless it's on your screen in front of you. I think a person who's running the show has to be flexible like that. And I don't know that you. That. That showed flexibility.
Matt Jones
Well, I thought. I thought that was my chance.
Myron Metcalf
There was also that time when the first week Matt was gone and you were driving.
Matt Jones
You called yourself Matt Jones.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, you did. You said, I'm Matt Jones and he's Myron Metcalf.
Matt Jones
Listen, how come you all keep such a tally of.
Myron Metcalf
Can I just show you one more thing he does? I want you to get that clip again. And this isn't to pick on Myron.
Matt Jones
But it feels like this has become the show. Like, y'all are picking on me, though.
Myron Metcalf
You guys like. Like to. To listen to Myron on this show. It's why you listen to Sunday Mornings with Matt. Myron You. You hear Myron's voice. It's a wonderful voice. It's. People love it. It's like, you know. How would you describe your voice, Myron?
Matt Jones
A little bit of Isaac Hayes and Barry White.
Myron Metcalf
It's soothing. Sometimes laughing.
Matt Jones
Late night when he drives the show.
Myron Metcalf
It'S almost like he takes a switch where he thinks he has to become a different human being. Like, he thinks he has to sound different. He thinks he has to have a different tone of voice. So I want you to play that clip again and listen when Myron starts the ad from how he's just sounded, say, hey, Myron, right?
Matt Jones
Listen, this is not different.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, so start like that. Now let's play what he sounds like when he thinks he has to drive.
Matt Jones
Myron and I will debate it next. But first, Myron has this word from our friends at Vivid Seats. Does the college football overtime real needs.
Myron Metcalf
Listen to that.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's me, right? Does the college football overtime rule all of a sudden?
Myron Metcalf
Just change voice? Like, you have to be the announcer from the Simpsons.
Matt Jones
Listen, live read is I'm trying to sell stuff to white people. So I don't know that. It's not like I'm trying to do it. I think I'm just going into sales mode. Like, if I knocked on the door in the suburbs, you literally become a.
Myron Metcalf
Different person when you're driving. And I think me barely able to speak is better than that.
Matt Jones
My job is to do the read to promote whatever company it is. So I'm just in, like, boardroom mode, you know, that's all it is.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I think it's not necessarily the best mode now. Even though I was sick, I felt better yesterday. So I was like, you know what? I'm going to take the car. I'm going to go up to Cincinnati. To Cincinnati, Ohio. They have a home game against the Broncos. A lot of playoff implications. You know, I don't get to go to a lot of Bengals games. I had not been to a regular season Bengals games and Bengals game in almost a decade because they usually come on right after this show. And, like, I don't have time to get there. So I went yesterday. Couple of observations. First of all, yeah, still, per capita, I've been to virtually every college football stadium of note. I have been to every college basketball arena of note. I've been to a number of football stadiums. No collectively weirder group of people than at Cincinnati Bengals games. I. I mean, I want you to think about if you drew up every kind of person to look like a cartoon Character from Rugrats. And that is exactly what is at that stadium. You're going to see one of everything. One size, you know, every kind of size, shape, race, gender, religion. They're all going to be there and they're all going to be dressed up strange. And here's the other thing they're going to be doing. They're going to be drinking, they're going to be hammered. And that is an environment that you just don't get, I think Myron, many other places.
Matt Jones
Well, I noticed when we did the show in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago, like the crowd started kind of like, you know, normal. About an hour and a half into the show, man, we were in a club. Like I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden the vibe changed, man, and they were just throwing them back.
Myron Metcalf
So I believe that was a 1:00 Sunday. Now imagine you start at 4:30 on Saturday. So they got all day week. Right? They got all weekend to get ready. They are, I mean there were people at. There were people in front of senior nursing facilities taking shots like they were selling them on the porch of the senior nursing facilities. I just. You knew what it was going to happen. And then the game itself. Yeah, the Bengals win, but they tried really hard, Byron, not to win. Zach Taylor, you know, when you're talking about coaching decisions with coaching acumen, the Bengals may be towards the bottom of making those kinds of decisions.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I think Joe Burrow continues to save a lot of jobs potentially. I mean, you know, it ain't the coaching, it's just him playing some of the best football that we've seen from him. Maybe the best football of his career. And you know what he throw for 400 plus yards that play at the end of the game. Joe Burrow, if anybody had any doubts about where he was in the hierarchy of the NFL, he has certainly silenced all the doubts because he is literally carrying that franchise.
Myron Metcalf
He was awesome yesterday. He really was. And T. Higgins had three touchdowns in what could be his final game ever at the Cincinnati at Red Cincinnati Stadium because they may not be able to resign him and also resign Jamar Chase. He was, he was awesome. You know, a lot of people are. There's this narrative out there that, oh well, Joe Burrow maybe should be the MVP now. And I saw a great argument this morning, Myron, which was Cincinnati not being good is why Joe Burrow should be mvp. I love that analogy because it just proves if you want to make an argument you'll use any fact is on your Side, like, if he was winning, well, he should be the MVP because he's winning. He's also losing, but that should still make him the MVP because he's losing. That shows how good he is. I love that argument. That no matter what their record is, that's still proof he should be the mvp.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I mean, that's the problem with the MVP conversation. Like, nothing's logical. Right. And everything's subjective and you just kind of apply the criteria that helps your guy. I mean, we're seeing that with, you know, obviously Lamar versus Josh Allen. I just wish we had, like, a set standard for what MVP is. You know, I mean, what does that fully entail? What criteria do you have to meet? And then you go from there. But in this way that we do it, it's impossible.
Myron Metcalf
It feels like, though, it's the most up for grabs that I could remember in a while in terms of. I mean, I think Josh Allen is the favorite, but there are definitely Lamar backers out there that could still make it a race.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, but I don't think that's going to happen. Like, people, it's not a computer doing this. It is voted. Like Tom Brady was a voter last year. Guys like me decide mvp.
Myron Metcalf
Are you comparing yourself to Tom Brady? You said Tom Brady is a voter, and then guys like me. Are you saying you and Tom Brady are similar? Vot.
Matt Jones
What I'm saying is it's. It's people who have natural biases towards whoever they favor, and it's hard to switch narratives. If Josh Allen.
Myron Metcalf
Do you think Tom Brady has a bias?
Matt Jones
Yeah, but I mean, if guys. If people decided collectively that Josh Allen was the MVP a couple of weeks ago. Right. Which. What is what happened? Right. People aren't going to suddenly switch by the end of the season. That's just the way the MVP voting goes. I mean, I voted a lot of. For a lot of awards. Like, that's just how it happened. So it'll be Josh Allen and I get it. Despite Lamar Jackson playing as well as he is now.
Myron Metcalf
Well, Burrow was great. And a few. Couple of weeks ago, the Bengals needed like 14 things to happen to make the playoffs. And what's interesting is, like, 10 of them have. Yeah. Like the first 10, you know, they had this elaborate scheme, and now the first 10 have happened, and now it basically comes down to this. They need the Dolphins and the Colts to lose once over the next two weeks. Plausible. Right. That they both could lose the game, and then they need to win next week and they need The Chiefs to beat the Broncos. But, Myron, the Chiefs don't have anything to play for, which is probably going to make that difficult.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, it's going to be Carson Wentz against the Broncos. Right. And all the starters are going to sit. All the key guys are going to sit because you're going to have a bye week, too. So Kansas City's gonna get as much rest as they can with their top guys. So that's the one thing that I think put puts a wrench in those plants. By the way, I don't know what a wrench in those plans means. I know it's a phrase. I don't know how people came up with that. What is a wrench in?
Myron Metcalf
Well, if you put a wrench in something, it's not gonna be able to work because the wrench tightens it and it can't move. You see what I'm saying? Like you wrench, if you rinse something off and you tighten it, then it won't be able to to function. That's simply throwing a wrench in the plans.
Matt Jones
Why wouldn't it be just like if you tighten the screw on.
Myron Metcalf
Because that doesn't go off your tongue as well. If you tighten the screw in your plans, it's just easier to say the word wrench.
Matt Jones
Yeah, People need to work on that. We need to redo that.
Myron Metcalf
But why don't you throw us to break here to show people what they're missing of you driving.
Matt Jones
I'm not on the zoom right now. I just realized. So I gotta. I don't know what the next is.
Myron Metcalf
Why you can't drive. Next. The Heisman trophy winner played his last college game yesterday. We'll tell you what happened next.
Matt Jones

It is countdown to kickoff here on ESPN Radio. 859-888. Say ESPN text machine is 772-7745254. Got people writing in on the text machine. 772-745-254. Two things one person writes. Matt. I'm listening with my wife, we listen every Sunday. She said Matt's voice sounds much sexier sick than it does real.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
When he speaks normally, I think his voice is very annoying, but it's kind of sexy. With him sick, he should stay sick. Well, that's not very nice.
Matt Jones
Excuse me. Sick. Well, and I don't know if I would continue to listen to that show with my wife or partner of that.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, you worry. Like, she would think, oh, that Southern, like, sexy voice guy.
Matt Jones
And then what if she wants me to, you know, mimic it? I just. That may not be good.
Myron Metcalf
You know, I like this one, Matt. If you think the intro to that ad read was bad, you should have heard the read itself. Myron may be the worst ad reader in the history of broadcast. Did you.
Matt Jones
The worst ever. How can I be the worst ever?
Myron Metcalf
Well, because most people, they're not allowed on the air. If they sound like you did during that, they don't make it through the trial period.
Matt Jones
You think I need a tryout before they let me do it again?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I just think. I think you are for people who, you know, who aren't a regular follower of mine on my local show. I'm not. I know this is gonna surprise people, Myron, but I'm not the easiest to work with on the air.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
That's growth. You know that, right?
Matt Jones
I think that's growth. You know, we gotta know ourselves a little bit.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I just. I do things a very particular way. And, like, you know, I don't. What's a nice way to say this? I can't do shows with people who. It's like their whole thing is just, like, inane drivel, you know, where they're just like, boring people, basically. I mean, like, I can't have the conversation. Is Joe Burrow elite. Like, I just. I can't do that.
Matt Jones
I just.
Myron Metcalf
I can't do it. And that's a lot of radio. Not on this Station, of course, but on other stations, everything here. Everything here is very, very high.
Matt Jones
So.
Myron Metcalf
So because of that, I really like working with Myron because I feel like Myron gets me, you know, more than anyone else at espn. Myron gets me. And so I really like, work with Myron. I think Myron is the perfect, you know, yin to my yang. Right.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
When you flip it, though, and he's the. The yang and I'm the yin.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
No, it doesn't work because you can't. You don't have that thing.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
You know, you. You just. You don't. When you drive, it, like, activates this creature inside of you that thinks you have to act.
Matt Jones
We found the other part of the read, if you'd like.
Myron Metcalf
Y.
Matt Jones
How's every piling on me, man?
Myron Metcalf
Let's go ahead and play. This is just. Again, I haven't heard this yet, but this is just an example of what I'm talking about, giving you peace of.
Matt Jones
Mind with every purchase. Don't miss out. Visit vivid seats.com or download the app today.
Myron Metcalf
Stay classy, San Diego. See, there you go. I mean, you can't. Like, how is. How's Vivid Seats going to get anything for its money there with that ad read?
Matt Jones
Well, maybe they just got to stop letting me read, you know, I don't know. Maybe they got.
Myron Metcalf
I think. I think you are perfect. You're Scotty. You just get the pass. I'll take you to the hall of Fame. But don't, you know, Scotty catching strays? Yeah, I think Scotty was the best number two of all time. Now, BYU in Colorado played last night in the Alamo bowl, probably along with the Iowa State, Miami, Pop Tarts Bowl. These will probably be the two biggest bowls besides the playoff games that we'll have just. They both got lucky with very good matchups. BYU and Colorado. I was State. Miami was a great matchup. There are two different ways you could go with this. BYU won by 22, kind of blew out Colorado. Does that matter to you for. For Shadow Sanders and Travis Hunter or. Miami lost by one in the Pop Tarts bowl and Cam Ward only played the first half and did not play the second half, refused to do. So. Those are going to be three of the top seven or eight guys taken in the draft. Do you read anything into any of that?
Matt Jones
No, I don't think it. I think we got to remember sometimes that, like, Twitter conversations don't mean anything in the real world, and people get hyped up about stuff on Twitter and social media and they think it'll translate. I don't think it will. I mean, to me, with Cam Ward, where it becomes a challenge is if he gets to the NFL and there are character issues, leadership issues that'll haunt him.
Myron Metcalf
Right.
Matt Jones
Then people will say, wow, the same guy who wouldn't play in the second half or if he's not good, like if he's a bust, that's the kind of thing that'll haunt him. But if he's good and he plays well and he ends up being a top quarterback in his class and he lives up to the potential, no one will care about him sitting out, I think, in the second half of the game. So a lot of people who are mad on Twitter, I don't think any GM or exec is going to remove him from the draft board as a result. He's going either one or he's going to. And that's not going to change with anything that happened in that game yesterday.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, if I was the NFL, I wouldn't care if Cam Ward played at all, would you? I mean, I probably wouldn't want him to play. Yeah. I mean, now I will say, just from. Let's. Let me say I don't care. Okay. I don't care at all. And I don't think it should matter at all when it comes to the NFL. I will say, Myron, I don't really understand the thought process behind it. Yeah, I'm only going to play the first half. I mean, if you're. To me, there's an argument to not play at all.
Matt Jones
Yep.
Myron Metcalf
And then there's an argument to play and play the game. Yeah, but what is the argument to only play a half? Well, I mean, what is the like, what's the argument there?
Matt Jones
Well, he broke the record. Right. I think for touchdowns.
Myron Metcalf
But see, that almost makes it seem selfish.
Matt Jones
Yes. Listen, I think they're the. From the NFL perspective, I don't think it affects a thing. As a college football fan, I would have rather him not play or play the full game. Right. But. But I don't think that's going to translate to the next level.
Myron Metcalf
I don't either. But let's say I'm a Miami fan.
Matt Jones
Yes. You don't like.
Myron Metcalf
How do I justify my head? You know, I'm a Kentucky fan.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
We've had in major bowl games quarterbacks play last year. Will Levis set it out. I know when we talk about Will Levis brings up that he skipped the bowl game. People got over it two years ago. I think this Will linger more because it's like, why would you play a half, get your individual record and then stop?
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's not going to sit well with a lot of Miami fans, but their bigger issue is that they didn't live up to their potential in general. Should have been a playoff team. I don't think this will follow Cam Ward, the NFL guy, but there will be Miami people who are upset and there will be college football people who are like, this is what's wrong with the game. But I think it's a Twitter conversation that happened in between the playoffs and by tomorrow we won't care.
Myron Metcalf
I agree with that. I don't think it matters long term. I just think it's an odd decision.
Matt Jones
It is. And the coaching staff had a chance. To me, how does your coach allow that?
Myron Metcalf
But. But like, his answer. The coach's answer made it almost seem like he was not happy with it either.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it was a little weird, which.
Myron Metcalf
I. I don't know. Sometimes I want to say to these schools, let's work on our PR before we do some of this stuff. But then I asked Myron to work on his intros, and it doesn't really help. The Vikings have a chance to get the top seed. Will they do it next?
Matt Jones
Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Myron Metcalf
It is countdown to kickoff here on ESPN Radio. I promise you were presented by Progressive Insurance, although you probably could have believed that. Matt Jones, Byron Metcalf. But I also promise you we're going to do some NFL as well. It's just there's only like eight games today and a lot of the good teams have already played. And so it's actually kind of a stinky day. Like, it's probably the worst day of the NFL of the year. Wouldn't you agree? The worst Sunday of the year.
Matt Jones
Yeah. It's a weird because we've seen so many great games already.
Myron Metcalf
A lot of great teams have already played.
Matt Jones
Yeah. What, since Wednesday? Right? Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, the Vikings and the packers is really the only good game today. I'm not trying me. I want you to tune in because we're fun. But, like, I'm not gonna say and lie to you and be like, this is the greatest day of action ever, because it's not.
Matt Jones
And the Bengals need, like, seven things to happen to.
Myron Metcalf
Well, no, they needed 14. And like, 10 have happened. Yeah, I mean, a bunch of stuff has happened. I mean, you look at the best games today real quick. Just looking. You got. I mean, what? Vikings, packers at 430.
Matt Jones
I mean, that's big.
Myron Metcalf
But besides that, I mean, commanders Falcons.
Matt Jones
On Sunday night, that's big. Sunday night football is big. I mean, yeah, if Tampa Bay loses, Falcons and clinch NFC south will win.
Myron Metcalf
I don't put Falcons games as big anything, but if you want to do.
Matt Jones
That, Michael might be the man.
Myron Metcalf
This is apropos of nothing, but I just saw this come up apropos. You know, they're. Nowadays, people look younger than they used to. Would you agree with that? Like for their age. Oh, yeah.
Matt Jones
You see some of those photos from the 70s and those dudes.
Myron Metcalf
So, like, I am. I am 46. Myron is 51.
Matt Jones
41, buddy. What are you talking. 51. Stop it.
Myron Metcalf
Sorry, I got confused. 41.
Matt Jones
That's a big confusion.
Myron Metcalf
I'm gonna give you some ages of people that you may remember from television of your youth or whatever and tell you the age they were when they started.
Matt Jones
Okay?
Myron Metcalf
Do you remember the show Sanford and Son?
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah, definitely.
Myron Metcalf
Do you know how old Red Fox was in season one of Sanford and Son?
Matt Jones
It feels like 65.
Myron Metcalf
He was 48 years old in season one of Sanford. Is that not crazy?
Matt Jones
Well, he going through the civil rights era. That'll add some years to it.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, you think you gotta put in a civil rights curve.
Matt Jones
That civil rights. That'll add something to.
Myron Metcalf
You didn't know there was a civil rights curve.
Matt Jones
That'll add.
Myron Metcalf
See, I always felt like Martin Luther King looked older than he was.
Matt Jones
Cause wasn't.
Myron Metcalf
He was only like 35, wasn't he?
Matt Jones
That might have been some makeup on Martin Luther King. I think they had him done up whenever you saw him.
Myron Metcalf
All right, so you got the Red Fox civil rights curve of 48 years old. All right, how about Archie and Edith Bunker? How old would you.
Matt Jones
Don't.
Myron Metcalf
Don't try to guess it. How old do you think they were?
Matt Jones
No looking at. I thought Archie was just looking at him.
Myron Metcalf
You would say 60s. What about Edith, his wife?
Matt Jones
I thought she was in her early 60s, late 50s.
Myron Metcalf
48. Archie. 44. Edith.
Matt Jones
Oh, my goodness.
Myron Metcalf
Edith. Younger than me. What? Isn't that crazy?
Matt Jones
That's different.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, how about Wilford Brimley in the start of the show, what was the name of the show he did?
Matt Jones
I don't know.
Myron Metcalf
Wilford Brimley and Cocoon. You know Wilford Brimley?
Matt Jones
I don't know Wilford Brimley. I don't know Cocoon. I don't know the show.
Myron Metcalf
You don't know who Wilford Brimley is?
Matt Jones
I've never heard of Cocoon.
Myron Metcalf
He we used to like sell diabetes medication.
Matt Jones
Oh, that dude.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. I know you do.
Myron Metcalf
That's how you know. You don't know him from Cocoon or Life. You know him from the diabetes medication.
Matt Jones
Remember we were watching different shows from.
Myron Metcalf
3 to 8pm so you only watch diabetes shows.
Matt Jones
I remember him with the diabetes. He's. Because he call it. He would always say the diabetes.
Myron Metcalf
He would say the diabetes. I like that. You don't know him from his acting. I know him from the diabetes Diabetes commercial.
Matt Jones
I know him from the diabetes. Yep.
Myron Metcalf
All right. Do you know how old he was? And during the diabetes commercials he looked. It's 80.
Matt Jones
I don't know whether you're ordering wings for the game, whipping up a seven.
Myron Metcalf
Layer dip, or ordering pizza.
Matt Jones
There's something about football that makes you want to eat.
Myron Metcalf
And this football season, UberEats has the.
Matt Jones

Myron Metcalf
50. 50? You thought he was 80 with his diabetes, he was 50. And then finally from the Brady Bunch, do you remember the, the, the housekeeper, Alice?
Matt Jones
Yes, yes.
Myron Metcalf
How old do you think Alice was? Alice?
Matt Jones
Alice, like she about mid-50s, late late 50s possibly.
Myron Metcalf
She was 41 years old. Alice the housekeeper on the Brady Bunch.
Matt Jones
Some of that though was like, you know, the shows were in like TV had just kind of gone to color. Right. So some of that might have been that as well. That's amazing.
Myron Metcalf
So there you go. By the way, that's not anything to do with the football games today. It was just thought something. I thought I would.
Matt Jones
You said I was 51. That's a big era, man. I'm 41, man.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, but you could look 51. No, you did want to say something, and I do too, about the passing of, of Greg Gumbel, 78 years old after a legendary career.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, you know, rest in peace to him and his family. You know, there's a collection of guys on tv, where if you're like me and your dream was to work in sports at ESPN as a young African American, there's like a couple of guys you saw and thought, wow, maybe I can do that. Stuart Scott was certainly one of them. Greg Gumbel was certainly one of them. Brian Gumbel. But Greg was successful at such an early stage in his career, and you didn't see that many guys who looked like Greg who were in these positions of kind of leading a show. You know, like he was kind of the guy in charge and he just always was so professional. You know, anytime you said Greg Dumble and he was a part of a show or broadcast, you knew what you were getting. Like you. You knew what the product would be, man. So I view him and others like him as real pioneers, you know, who opened the door for so many people who came after him, man. So he's a legend.
Myron Metcalf
He is one of these people for someone my age. And probably the only person left that's like, this would be Al Michaels, who has been on television my entire life.
Matt Jones
Yes.
Myron Metcalf
Like, there's never been a moment in my life that Greg Gumbel was not on television. And I'm 46 years old. Yeah, he. I mean, he has called everything. He's the only African American to ever call a Super Bowl. Right. He call his. Called the NCAA tournament the selection show. For how many years in a row has he done the selection? 30 plus years.
Matt Jones
I don't know a selection show without him.
Myron Metcalf
Yes, he's done college football. He used to do the NBA for ESPN here many, many years ago. He is an absolute legend. Brother in the business as well. You talk about a guy that didn't age. He was 78. He could have passed for 45 years old. Right. I mean, like, he. He was an absolute legend. So rest in peace to Greg Gumbel, who has been on television. It's not gonna be March Madness. Not gonna be the same. Selection show will not be the same without Greg this year. Now, Deion Sanders, we talked about the Colorado game yesterday and how he's had such success there. Obviously, other schools are trying to emulate it. Michael Vick has been hired at Norfolk State. And now desean Jackson has been hired as the new football coach at Delaware State. Now, there's two on historically black colleges with Michael Vick and desean Jackson. Jackson's going to be introduced in a news conference Jan. 8, but he took over the role earlier this month. You are, I think, going to see more and more of this. These schools trying to kind of Eddie George did Tennessee State as well. Trying to kind of find their niche, and maybe they think they can find it with a famous former NFL player. Do you like this, Myron?
Matt Jones
I absolutely hate it. And I think it. It is not good for the game. I don't think it's good for the HBCUs. And I'll tell you why. Like, first off, shout out to Eddie George, who actually has been, you know, a pretty good coach. I think in general, hiring coach. Hiring coaches without previous experience is a gamble at any level. I think people assume coaching is easier than it really is. It's hard to coach in high school. But when you're talking about the collegiate ranks, my problem with the desean Jackson is there's already a perception, a false perception, that you can do things at HBCUs that may not fly other places. Who cares how much experience you are that you have? That's a different level of football. So I think it overall just dilutes the entire perception of the quality of those programs and the coaches who are there at some of those schools. I think, number two, you have desean Jackson skipping over guys who've been working to put themselves in this position. Like, there are so many great coaches, offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators, guys who've been head coaches, guys who are right there. And we talk to these guys, Matt, at all levels, who can't even get a phone call to get into the interview process. They, they don't even necessarily know they're going to get the job. They just want to be at the table talking to a decision maker, and they can't even get to that stage. So imagine you've worked your whole career in the HBCU ranks. You've recruited, you've done all the things, and DeSean Jackson gets the job. I think that hurts everybody because it suggests that we're not going to reward the people who've done the work. We're going to reward the people who have a particular name in the HBCUs. And I don't think that helps the.
Myron Metcalf
Schools overall understand your point. But let's say I'm the AD at Norfolk State and I can get Michael Vick and I can go from having games that no one pays attention to to having ESPN talking about Norfolk State football. Isn't there value in that for Norfolk State, there's.
Matt Jones
There's value in putting the spotlight on the school 100%. There's value in putting a spotlight on the program. And even I understand, you know, does desean Jackson have a better chance of getting someone in the portal that they would never had a shot at because he's DeSean Jackson versus another coach. Sure. But I think this pattern is problematic. Matt, how many. How many ex pros have been successful in college basketball?
Myron Metcalf
Very few. But Deion has. And like, so you. So I think you're asking yourself, do we think Deion is an outlier, or do we think Deion is a sort of light of things to come? Like if. To use a music industry, probably. Terrible reference. When the Backstreet Boys came out, you could have said, they're going to be the only one of. Or you could have said, you know what? I've got NSYNC over here, and I've got 98 degrees, so maybe they'll be popular, too. And maybe Michael Vick is in sync and Desean Jackson is 98 degrees.
Matt Jones
Wait, we're talking about historically black colleges and universities. Your reference was Backstreet Boys.
Myron Metcalf
Exactly. They're back. All right. And Michael Vick could be Justin Timberlake in Norfolk State.
Matt Jones
Okay. Boys to men. Jodeci would have been better. That would have been a better.
Myron Metcalf
Maybe I shouldn't have used white boy bands. My examples.
Matt Jones
It changed the tone. It's got to change the tone. You know what I mean? Like it.
Myron Metcalf
But you understood what I was talking about, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah, but I thought there was a chance to really.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I wasn't gonna go. Look, I think you would have liked it less if I was like, all right, once J.D. vance becomes Vice president, then you could be Marco Rubio or Josh Holly.
Matt Jones
I don't know if you should have used any of it. Honestly, I don't know of any of it. But I get what you're saying. Here's my one point on Dion. Dion was a high school coach, right? Dion did coach in high school. Sean Jackson hasn't done that. But I don't know if that's Backstreet Boys. I don't know what you're talking about, but I don't think it helps long term.
Myron Metcalf
I understand. Do you remember at 98 degrees?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I remember all of them. Old Town. 98 degrees.
Myron Metcalf
You remember Old Town, man?
Matt Jones
Old Town came to give out this CD by my house one time, and the line was like, three blocks.
Myron Metcalf
Came where, though? Like where? They took a little house, a little.
Matt Jones
CD shop in town, and the line was, like, three blocks long. Everybody's trying to get Old Town's autograph.
Myron Metcalf
Did you stand in line to get Old Towns?
Matt Jones
I drove by.
Myron Metcalf
But that's why you can't complain. The kind of person who understood o towns excitement. You should not be unhappy when, when you know Ocho Cinco coaches, Hampton, like this is exactly, this is what happens.
Matt Jones
But like, I need to introduce you to some more like black 90s R B groups, you know, black street. There's so many other groups.
Myron Metcalf
How about next?
Matt Jones
Next. Who's from Minneapolis? You know they're from shy.
Myron Metcalf
How about shy?
Matt Jones
See, now you're talking, man.
Myron Metcalf
That's right.
Matt Jones
Talking.
Myron Metcalf
See, don't you act like I don't know 90s R&B.
Matt Jones
Coming up next, this great band from 1997 I didn't know if we needed.
Myron Metcalf
To talk about too close here today on the, on this show. Coming up next, the AFC top seed is already clinched, but we're gonna figure out who gets the number one seed in the nfc. We will deal with that next here on ESPN Radio. This year, Santa's bringing the power of.
Matt Jones
Energizer into his workshop. Whoa. The Energizer Bunny's got so much power. Wait, he's powered up all the toys. I think that means we're done for the year. I love this bunny.
Myron Metcalf
He's the hardest working help helper the North Pole has ever seen.
Matt Jones
And he wants all your gifts to have the power of the number one.
Myron Metcalf
Longest lasting AA battery. So this holiday season, stock up on Santa's and the elves favorite battery, Energizer Ultimate Lithium with Uber reserve.
Matt Jones
Good things come to those who plan ahead. Family vacay. Reserve your ride as soon as you.
Myron Metcalf
Book your flights to all the planners.
Matt Jones
Now you can reserve your Uber ride up to 90 days in advance. See Uber app for details. Matt and Myron the podcast.
Myron Metcalf
Myron didn't like me using this as the analogy with the HBCU coaches.
Matt Jones
I didn't.
Myron Metcalf
But that's all right.
Matt Jones
There were other bands. I mean, if you were going to talk about Dion and desean Jackson and Michael Vick, like New Edition was right there for you. Jodison Boyz II Men112 all right, there.
Myron Metcalf
The text machine is 772-7745254. One person writes, I don't know what Myron's talking about when he does his ad reads. He sounds like the kind of person who would have stood in line for LFO with frosted tips on his hair. That is true. That's the widest voice you have is when you do your ad reads, I'm not trying.
Matt Jones
I mean it just they're saying you got to sell stuff, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yes.
Matt Jones
You know, maybe I'm not supposed to be in Sales. Maybe that's what it is, but I'm just being professional, that's all.
Myron Metcalf
By the way, these. You asked about touch throwing a wrench into something. Why they say that? Yeah, it's because if you toss a wrench into a set of gears, they won't turn.
Matt Jones
Okay, that is not what you said.
Myron Metcalf
No, it isn't. That's why I'm reading what it is.
Matt Jones
You said something, and you said it like you knew. You said something completely different.
Myron Metcalf
Just the one thing that's very important is speak with confidence. Because even if you don't know, people will think you know. So you have to speak with confidence. I mean, when I'm on these shows, you think I know anything about this stuff we're talking about? I just speak with confidence. That's the key.
Matt Jones
You can't do that with me, though, because I'll take that to other places and I'll tell people.
Myron Metcalf
I know, but the key is if you just speak with confidence. I mean, how do you think we got to where we are as a society? People just keep speaking with confidence.
Matt Jones
But the problem is, if you don't tell me within a minute of what that metaphor actually means, I'm going to run with it and I'm going to start using it with other people. And that's how misinformation is spread, man.
Myron Metcalf
I understand. Well. Well, now you know, for the future. The packers and the Vikings play at 425 today.
Matt Jones
It's a big game.
Myron Metcalf
Is. Is this a Fox or a CBS game? Nick? We know it's Fox. It's Fox. So that means we get to listen to Tom Brady learn on the air how to call games. Whoa, whoa.
Matt Jones
Is that a shot at Brady? You don't like him?
Myron Metcalf
He's not good at it, right? I mean, everybody believe that. You think he's good at it.
Matt Jones
I think he's getting better, I think.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, but that's not the. Like.
Matt Jones
Yeah, okay, but you said how to call games in real, like, so we're in week 17. You don't think he's. What grade would you give him right now?
Myron Metcalf
See? Really? Yeah, he's not good. Yeah, they're like. Like, Greg Olson is objectively a lot better than him, and they don't. And they have Olson on the second games just because, like, it's. It's ridiculous. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just being factual. There's not one person out here listening that thinks Tom Brady is better at it than Greg Olson. No, Greg Olson has to be in the second position. Why? Because Brady was better at football. Who cares?
Matt Jones
Well. And they gave him $300 million. No. Why did they give him 300 million?
Myron Metcalf
He wasn't good.
Matt Jones
I feel like they're there. I feel like Brady's getting better. I mean, from the early weeks till now.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, Herb street is number one on college football. He. He wasn't even a decent college quarterback, but he's really good at announcing. Their different skills.
Matt Jones
There are. But you're. What you said was he's learning how to call. So that suggested you feel like he hasn't made any progress this season. Like he still is as bad as he was at the start of the year. Whereas I think.
Myron Metcalf
Am I supposed to grade him on the curve of. Well, you're doing better, Tom.
Matt Jones
Well, like, is that what I'm supposed to do? I just. I think people wanted him to be Romo right away or something like that, and that was never gonna happen. I think it's a hard job. Uh, it's a new job.
Myron Metcalf
Stop. It's a hard job. Listen, working in a. Working in a coal mine is a hard job. You have to sit there and talk about.
Matt Jones
So why do. See. But what am I supposed to do when you go there? Like, I don't know. Oh, firefighters are hard. Of course those are hard jobs. We're talking about the realm of sports, where I do think calling a game is not an easy thing to do at that level. And it is something that play by.
Myron Metcalf
Play is hard to do. Being a color announcer at a game.
Matt Jones
Is easy, especially think. I don't think so.
Myron Metcalf
What do you mean? It's not as easy as I think I've done it.
Matt Jones
I know. But at that level, I think there are challenges that anyone in times position would struggle with. That's all I'm saying.
Myron Metcalf
I'm just saying it should be Greg Olsen. Anyway, we get Tom Brady tonight, which will be nice. We could learn on the job with him. Packers and Vikings, massive game. Vikings are fighting with the Lions and the Eagles still for the number one seed in the nfc. When it's all said and done, who's going to have it?
Matt Jones
Myron? Probably the Lions. I mean, they're in the. In the position even though I think the Vikings win today. The bottom line for me, though, is are the Vikings real or not? Like, I think that's why today matters so much. You beat Green Bay, a team that has a lot of momentum, playing some of the best football in the league right now. You win this game in Minneapolis, I think people Will walk away going, okay, yeah, the Lions maybe are the best team in the nfc, but it's close. And I think they'll view the Vikings as a team that legitimately can get to a Super bowl and maybe even win it. I think those. That's kind of what's on the line. More perception than anything else with this Vikings team.
Myron Metcalf
Do you, you know, you are a homer for all things Minnesota.
Matt Jones
Actually, I'm not.
Myron Metcalf
But are you a homer for this Vikings team? Like, how good is this a team that can make the Super Bowl?
Matt Jones
You know, I've had an opportunity to do a couple sideline gigs, you know, with ESPN Radio and be up close with the Vikings and just see things firsthand. No, and I. What you see is the genuine chemistry, like Kevin O'Connell, like, they legitimately ride for him, like, they legitimately like him. And you can see that chemistry. You can see the way they treat Sam Darnold and just the way the guys rally around him. So I think the culture of the team is as good as I've seen it with the Minnesota Vikings in a long time. The question is, and we talk about this all the time, only hall of Famers win Super Bowls. That's just NFL history of the last 30 years. So Sam Donald, isn't that so? My question is, in the playoffs, in those tough moments in the fourth quarter, does he make the right throws?
Myron Metcalf
Well, let me give you. Let me give it to you a different way. All right, so it's. It's Vikings, Lions. Let's say the game is in Detroit. Two and a half minutes to go. Lions are up four, two and a half minutes to go. They have all three timeouts. They get the ball at the 20 yard line. Is Sam Darnold taking the team all the way down the field in the NFC Championship to go get a Super Bowl?
Matt Jones
He can. No, he can't. And I wouldn't have said that six weeks ago, but today he can. It's not just going to be Sam. It's got to be Justin Jefferson. It's got to be everybody else. But he can get them down the field and they can score. Playing in Detroit doesn't scare anybody because this is the first time they've had this situation, like, so we don't know what Detroit will be as a home field advantage. I don't think that intimidates anybody in the NFL.
Myron Metcalf
But you do think they win today. Like, if I tune in and I have to listen to Tom Brady talk, am I going to see a Vikings victory?
Matt Jones
I feel like And I think you're gonna see a team that can get to the super bowl and maybe win.
Myron Metcalf
Maybe win it. Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Wow.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
All right. Well, that's, that's good. And by the way, not saying Tom is is terrible. I'm just saying shouldn't be in the number one chance. I don't think that's controversial.
Matt Jones
That's fair.
Myron Metcalf
Controversial to you because you like to suck up the stars. Speaking of a star, Herm Edwards joins us next here on Gathering the Kickoff.

Release Date: December 29, 2024
In the latest episode of "Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron", hosts Matt Jones and Myron Metcalf delve deep into the intricacies of the sports world, offering listeners a blend of insightful analysis, candid conversations, and light-hearted banter. Despite Matt grappling with a lingering cold that has affected his voice, the dynamic duo ensures a lively discussion filled with key sports topics, personal anecdotes, and memorable moments.
The episode kicks off with Matt revealing his struggle with a cold:
Matt Jones [00:28]: "I have the final remnants of a cold. And I thought I lost my voice last night."
Myron steps up to support Matt, showcasing their strong on-air chemistry:
Myron Metcalf [00:28]: "I'm probably going to be relying on you and our callers if they'll open up the phones."
Their playful exchange highlights the camaraderie between the hosts, setting a relatable tone for the episode.
A significant portion of the episode revolves around Matt's recent on-air experiences, particularly a live read that didn't go as planned. Myron brings this up humorously:
Myron Metcalf [02:14]: "You didn't even take time to really think about it."
Matt reflects on the incident:
Matt Jones [03:19]: "I thought they made me a part of the read. I didn't know what was going on, but... it was a slight error."
The duo humorously critiques each other's ad reading skills, emphasizing their unique voices and styles:
Matt Jones [04:31]: "A little bit of Isaac Hayes and Barry White."
Myron Metcalf [04:35]: "It's almost like he takes a switch where he thinks he has to become a different human being."
Their light-hearted ribbing not only entertains but also underscores the challenges of live broadcasting.
A substantial segment of the discussion focuses on the Cincinnati Bengals and their quest to make the playoffs. Myron provides an on-site perspective from a recent game:
Myron Metcalf [05:49]: "I went yesterday. Couple of observations... They're all going to be drinking, they're going to be hammered."
Matt highlights Joe Burrow's pivotal role:
Matt Jones [08:11]: "Joe Burrow... he is literally carrying that franchise."
They delve into the complexities of playoff qualifications, with Myron outlining the numerous conditions the Bengals need to fulfill:
Myron Metcalf [11:02]: "They need the Dolphins and the Colts to lose once over the next two weeks. Plausible."
Matt adds insights on coaching decisions and player performances, emphasizing the significance of Burrow's leadership and potential MVP candidacy.
The conversation shifts to the ongoing MVP debates, contrasting players like Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Myron appreciates the subjective nature of the awards:
Myron Metcalf [09:36]: "It just proves if you want to make an argument you'll use any fact on your side."
Matt expresses a desire for clearer criteria:
Matt Jones [09:59]: "I just wish we had a set standard for what MVP is."
They also discuss Tom Brady's role as a game announcer, critiquing his performance:
Myron Metcalf [39:16]: "He's not good at it, right?"
Matt remains slightly more optimistic about Brady's progress but acknowledges the challenges:
Matt Jones [40:05]: "I think people wanted him to be Romo right away or something like that, and that was never gonna happen."
A heated debate arises around recent coaching appointments at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), specifically focusing on DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick. Myron draws parallels between these hires and famous pop culture groups:
Myron Metcalf [34:01]: "Maybe Michael Vick is in sync and Desean Jackson is 98 degrees."
Matt counters by emphasizing the potential negative implications for HBCUs:
Matt Jones [33:25]: "I absolutely hate it. And I think it is not good for the game."
He argues that such appointments might overshadow deserving coaches who have dedicated their careers to these institutions:
Matt Jones [33:03]: "We're going to reward the people who have done the work."
Myron acknowledges the value in increased visibility but remains skeptical about long-term benefits.
The hosts pay tribute to Greg Gumbel, a legendary ESPN broadcaster who recently passed away at 78. They reminisce about his influential career and enduring legacy:
Matt Jones [28:06]: "He was successful at such an early stage in his career... he was an absolute legend."
Myron Metcalf [29:22]: "He's the only African American to ever call a Super Bowl."
Their heartfelt reflections underscore Gumbel's impact on sports broadcasting and his role as a trailblazer for future generations.
Wrapping up the episode, Matt and Myron preview the anticipated Packers vs. Vikings game. They analyze team dynamics, quarterback performances, and playoff implications:
Matt Jones [42:09]: "I've had an opportunity to... see things firsthand. The culture of the team is as good as I've seen it with the Minnesota Vikings in a long time."
Myron Metcalf [43:25]: "If I tune in and I have to listen to Tom Brady talk, am I going to see a Vikings victory?"
They discuss quarterback Sam Darnold's capabilities and the team's potential to reach the Super Bowl, highlighting the importance of game-day performances in shaping team reputations.
Despite Matt's vocal challenges, the episode remains engaging and informative.
