Morning here with Matt Myon on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance, Matt Jones. Myron Metcalf, Here with you on another Sunday morning is an absolutely beautiful day here in Lexington, Kentucky. Myron is in Minneapolis, Minnesota and you can give a shout out at 8 6, see say or say ESPN. Myron big day of sports. You're going to have a NHL game seven, you got an NFL game seven, you got the PGA Championship final round, full day of baseball. You know, there may not be a particular event like we have earlier in the year, but May and June give us these days on the weekend where a ton of stuff is going on.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, no, it's a lot for every sports fan, whatever you want. Baseball, obviously, basketball, just really high level sports with big stakes. So you gotta love it.
Matt Jones
We're gonna get started as we always do. But I do, I would be remiss if I didn't sort of say something to just begin the show quickly. You know, I'm here in Kentucky, Myron. There were on Friday night a series of really terrible tornadoes in Kentucky that hit a number of small towns. And, and at the last I heard there were 18 official deaths. I think that number is probably going to rise. But yesterday I went to one of the towns in London, Kentucky, which is down in Appalachia in southeastern Kentucky, very close to where I grew up, about 45 minutes away. And the tornado hit a neighborhood, a relatively large neighborhood. And basically I had heard what wiped the neighborhood out. This was where most of the people that died in the tornado lived. And I went up there just to see it and was there for a press conference. And Myron, it was without question probably the most devastating thing I've ever seen. I mean, imagine a neighborhood wherever you live, just completely taken out things everywhere, virtually every house gone, although oddly a few houses not even touched, which is what can happen in a tornado. And I just wanted to give my prayers to the people of that community, but also just to have the America sort of take notice. I've been disappointed in the amount of national coverage this actually has not gotten, considering how devastating it is for the region. But, you know, if you're not in a place that has tornadoes, they're hard to describe. It's kind of the most dangerous weather event because you don't get a lot of warning for it. And seeing that up close, you know, Myron, I don't, I'll never forget it. And it's just a reminder that you can see these tragic, like, weather situations, et cetera. And like, you see the pictures and you see the video and you hear the numbers and it's like, it's hard to comprehend. But when you stand there on the ground and you see people's lives everywhere and just the area devastated, it's. It's really tragic. So I just wanted to note that today with the national audience.
Myron Metcalf
No, I think that's important, man. I only saw the videos and my heart goes out to all the people. It's almost surreal to see. I mean, you hear people kind of get arrogant about what they have and then things like this happen and you're reminded of how fragile life is. But yeah, people literally lost everything in a moment, in an instant. So I hope all the support. Yeah, it's just hard to fathom.
Matt Jones
So there'll be, I'm sure, charity stuff that will come out today and I may send it out on social media, but I just wanted to give my thoughts to all those folks in that region. We'll switch to sports this morning. Let's go off the top.
Myron Metcalf
What are we thinking about?
Matt Jones
I'm trying to think, but nothing happens. Nothing happens.
Myron Metcalf
It's time to find out.
Matt Jones
This is off the top. Flash off the top with Matt and Myron. All right, it's off the top. And there are a number of big events today. Like we said, you got game seven, Nuggets, Thunder, we've got game seven, Maple Leafs, Panthers, and then yesterday a couple big events. Let's start Myron with the PGA Championship. One year ago, our guy, Scotty Scheffler was here in Louisville, Kentucky, right down the road. Got arrested during the tournament and now a year later is going to go into the final round of the same tournament, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina with a three shot lead. Does Scotty close it out from jail to the crown in a year?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I'm convinced that people were making a documentary about what happened last year. You gotta wait to add this in. Right, because if he wins it, that changes everything. And you go from not having a lot of star power in the PGA Championship, Some dude named Vegas was on top of the leaderboard.
Matt Jones
Some dude named Vegas?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I literally didn't recognize any of the names. Like, I thought it was on the top.
Matt Jones
Wrestler Johnny Vegas. You know, Johnny Vegas comes out in, like, a gold jacket. That could have been him. Now he's not going to probably win the jacket, man.
Myron Metcalf
It was like the Tech Mo bowl of golfers at the top of the leaderboard. I know who was who. And then Duchambeau makes a run live. John Ron makes a run, and then Scheffler does this a year later, Man. It's an incredible story.
Matt Jones
Is that what you call him? Live John Rom? Is that how you. You kind of. That's where he is?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, he's. He. Yeah, he's like, you know, ever since he went to live, he's not the same guy. Like, he hasn't really been competitive in majors, but now he has a shot. But, man, Sheffield has looked amazing.
Matt Jones
Yeah. He went from, like, the worst leaderboard in history. Although I do have to be careful. My buddy is the caddy for J.T. poston today, who's only two back, so. Or he's, like, in fourth place. Yeah. So when I say the leaderboards bad, I don't want to say my buddy's golfer is bad because he's actually good. But beyond that, it looked like a kind of mediocre leaderboard. And now you got Scotty. Is there any way he loses today? I mean, he feels like inevitable, right?
Myron Metcalf
There's always a chance, but I mean, the way he finished, I mean, I think he was, what, five under in the last five holes? Just hit some incredible shots, man. I think he'll be. He'll be hard to catch, man.
Matt Jones
Well, thing is, prison time will do that to you, Right? Like, I mean, if you watch. If you watch Prison Mike on the office, you understand that. Prison, prison time. You know, he comes into the golf course, you little intimidating. Now, Scotty, how many people you think.
Myron Metcalf
He promised when he was in jail for 15 minutes that he have that back if they looked out for him? Like, I'm sure there's people still locked up being like, man, Scotty told me he would get me once I. Once he got out. And they're still waiting on that help from Scotty.
Matt Jones
Scotty created his own group that one day when they get out, they're going to take over the PGA Tour. I would just go ahead and tell you, the rest of the golfers need to watch out. There's a group ready to rob them as soon as they get out of.
Myron Metcalf
The Jefferson county detention, brother showed up to the golf carts in Jordans and Timberlands and all kinds of stuff. Looking for Scottie Scheffler, man.
Matt Jones
Oh, decent. Oh, Bryson, you think you're tough? You think you're tough, Bryson? Anyway, good luck to Scotty Scheffler today. Then we'll move on the Preakness. That was yesterday. Journalism. Do we have the call, Evan? Down the stretch. Let's go ahead and play. This is the call of Journalism, one of the greatest comebacks in horse racing history. Coming down the stretch, Journalism is getting closer now. He's behind a wall of horses. He's looking for a place to go.
Evan
And he's got nowhere to go.
Matt Jones
Oh, he but Pard. But pard with goal oriented.
Evan
In the meanwhile, Goskar's running the race of his life, and Sandman has entered.
Matt Jones
The scene, and he has moved up on the far outside. Journalism is still running on. He's back into second. He might even win it. Here's the wire. Oh, my goodness. Journalism has won the break, the stakes. In a performance like you read about a. A performance like you read about, you could hear that excitement from the Horse racing Network. I always like to get my horse racing takes from you because you're not a fan of the sport like I. I am a fan. Were you excited by the end of that race?
Myron Metcalf
It. It was incredible, man. Like, the bump, you know, to. To maintain balance. And I guess people were saying, like, it. If that could have been tragic, right? I mean, that horses get caught like that.
Matt Jones
It worked out. Flavian Pratt, who was the jockey for the other horse, he kind of drifted into Journalism's lane. They call that, you know, race jockeying, where you just kind of go and you're not getting through here. And normally the other hockey. The other jockey will back off, but in Bo. I forget the Italian guy's name, the jockey, Perry in Pololi. Whatever. Anyway, he gets through there and he, like, makes his way, and that could have been awful, but it ended up being historic.
Myron Metcalf
Incredible race. And also, got to give Journalism credit, man. I just read that five of the last seven Derby winners didn't do the Preakness. So, I mean, the Triple Crown hasn't been at stake. So, you know, I want to see. I want to see the best horses run all three races, because I think that'll put a bigger spotlight on the sport.
Matt Jones
Do you think? Even though there's not a triple crowd on. On the Line, When Sovereignty, who won the Derby, and Journalism, who won the Preakness, when They have the Belmont for kind of the tiebreaker. Will people care?
Myron Metcalf
Yes, that'll be a big deal. No, that'll be a big deal because Journalism being a runner up and then time to the winner. That'll be a fun race, man, to see who's the horse of the year. Right? Is that. Is that what. They're vile.
Matt Jones
There's still a lot of year left. No, but it would. It would be the sort of.
Myron Metcalf
Got my vote.
Matt Jones
Gates, got your vote.
Myron Metcalf
I'm not waiting to vote.
Matt Jones
Well, the season doesn't end until the Breeders cup in November. You want to give him a little bit more time or. No, it's just over.
Myron Metcalf
Journalism got it. You know, if he wins the next race, you just want to.
Matt Jones
Here's the thing. You just wanna be one of these annoying people that went to journalism school that can say, journalism finally wins in the end. A moment for journalism. That's what you want. Let's be honest.
Myron Metcalf
No. When I saw the first couple tweets about journalism is back, it was cool. BY like the 40th time, I'm like, that's a lot. That's a day.
Matt Jones
But I will say this, you dorky journalist, you were just hoping for the.
Myron Metcalf
Moment I'm on the show, though.
Matt Jones
I mean, you were hoping for the moment you could go, Journalism has returned. Stop is it is Sunday morning just.
Myron Metcalf
My whole life passion, that's all.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you know, you know, you got the radio host career, you got the journalist Myron Metcalf. Sovereignty is still going to reign after that. But there were other things in sport yesterday, including Caitlin Clark versus Angel Reese. And what happened? They added to the rivalry with another major moment. We'll get to it. That's next right here on Sunday Morning with Matt, Myron.

Matt Jones
Matt Myron, EI on ESPN Radio. Soon we'll be changing this name just to Matt Myron, but for now it's still on Sunday morning and you can join us 888 say ESPM. We are having a beautiful time here, but in two weeks we're going to be at the CMA Fest in Nashville, which we'll talk more about. Myron doesn't even know what it is and it's one of the biggest things in country music and Myron's going to get to get his boot scooting boogie on in a couple of weeks. Myron, I hope you're excited about that.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, so CMA stands for I thought cma.
Matt Jones
Let's save it. I'll.
Myron Metcalf
I'll explain to you.
Matt Jones
We got a lot to get to, but I just want you to be excited. We're going to Nashville in two weeks. Are you excited about that?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, let's do it. I got questions, though. Yep. Like, what's the security situation? I got a lot of questions.
Matt Jones
Going to be fine. You can, we'll hang out. We'll go see Shaboozy. Me and Hoodie go now. The Nuggets forward Eric Gordon today is the Nuggets play the Thunder in game seven. He is now listed as questionable. Shams reported just a few minutes ago. It Shams has become like Prince. I don't even have to say his last name. I could just say Shams.
Myron Metcalf
It's like, yeah, Shams.
Matt Jones
Or I'm sorry, the Shams. Still no last name needed. Aaron Gordon has a grade 2 hamstring strain and needs several weeks to recover from the injury. He's been searching for ways to play in today's game, but is becoming physically improbable to do soar to do so, according to Shams. Now, his coach has said he is going to try to play. I'll ask you this. Do you think Myron, Aaron Gordon finds his way to the floor?
Myron Metcalf
No, I don't think so. I don't know what searching for a way to play even means. Like, you know what I mean? Like, what's that? Like, is he consulting?
Matt Jones
He's talking healers or something? Natural healers. There are potions. He's taking. Yeah, I don't know.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know what that means. So, no, he won't play.
Matt Jones
You don't think so you don't think. I mean, this may be the biggest game since they won the title. You don't think Aaron Gordon tries to find his way in?
Myron Metcalf
Because now if you do it in game seven and you make it worse now, you're potentially out for the Western Conference finals. I think he has to sit out and hope for the best. Honestly.
Matt Jones
Well, I don't know the strength of his injury, so I can't say he should or should not play. But I think it would be. If I were him, I would search for a way to play. I mean, I think it would make sense to try to play here. And then if you have to sit out the first three or four games, the Western Conference finals, so be it. But there's not going to be a Western Conference finals if you don't win today. So I could see it. But so much of what Aaron does is athleticism. So if he's hindered by that, I do wonder, Myron, if it really makes as much sense to have him in anyway.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. And he's not 22. You know, he's getting older, so it's like he can't. You can't just bounce back as fast.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Well, the NBA playoffs are on ESPN Radio. You will have Thunder and Nuggets game seven today. We'll be talking more about it with Clint Azabuki in a little bit. Coverage begins at 3 Eastern on ESPN radio, the ESPN app presented by. Indeed. Now, in the WNBA, last night, opening night, they put Caitlin Clark in the. In Indiana verse. Angel Reese in Chicago. And you ended up with this moment. And look out, Caitlin Clark pushes Angel Reese and Angel Reese gets right up into Caitlin Clark afterwards has something to say as Clark walks away. We know there are always increased eyeballs, energy and attention around the matchups between Reese and Clark. So Reese and Clark end up. It's almost the opposite of what happened last year. Clark with the hard foul that Reese responds to. Last year it was the opposite. Caitlin Clark's team obviously won the game. Caitlin Clark had a triple double in the game. But if you're talking about the WNBA rivalry, kind of the magic bird of this generation, it ended up getting another chapter yesterday. Myron, what was your take?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I'm fine with it all. Like, I don't need Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese to like each other. Like, we don't demand that of any male athletes. So I don't know why that would be the expectation here. Listen, I don't think they're buddies. I don't think they spend time together in the off season. They're competitors. They've been competing since college, and these things happen. What I hate is that that moment brought out the worst of the WNBA fan base. Again, because I think that most people are level headed about sports and competition, but there's certainly some extremists on all sides who turn this into something it shouldn't be. But if Caitlin Clark and Andrew Reese are battling and they're competitive and don't like each other, good for the league. I think that's a good thing.
Matt Jones
Well, first of all, maybe they don't like each other, but why do we assume that hard fouls mean they don't like each other? Like, we don't do that in the NBA. We don't do that with men's games. Like, people hard foul each other. We don't say, like, I saw Robert Griffin iii, who I don't know, and maybe a fine fellow, but he says, man, it's clear Angel Reese hates Caitlin Clark. Like, dude, you've played sports. Robert, you know, people do stuff during a game. Why is it the case that they hate each other because of one hard foul and an altercation in hockey, they beat the crap out of each other and then hug each other when it's over?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, well, I think because it's not one hard file, right? It's, you know, the. The college championship game. You can't see me, angel and Caitlin.
Matt Jones
But again, go back to the ca. You can't see me stuff. Like, we like it when NBA athletes do that. We don't immediately say, like, why is it that it really annoys me about women's basketball that we feel the need to, like, act like these people are so emotional when this stuff will happen today in the Nuggets game.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I'm not putting that emotional burden and saying like, oh, you know, we're looking at women athletes versus male at Draymond's the most emotional athlete that we've ever seen. He'd been kicking people for 15 years. Right. So it's not that for me. What I'm saying is it's okay for two of the top players in that sport, in that league to be competitive enough where they just both want to win so badly. And maybe they aren't best friends. Maybe they don't like each other. To me, not liking each other is a lot different than hatred. Like, I think most competitors don't like each other in the moment when they're competing. And Angel Reese and Caitlin have been battling literally for years. I mean, angel said they were battling like this on the AAU circuit. I think it's good for the game as long as people don't make it into something else. Because.
Matt Jones
The second point is, why? Why do people want to make it something else? And why do. I mean. Well, you. I mean, when you say, you know, why, is it because you think that Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark has become embroiled in a bigger cultural war? Basically, yes. Yes.
Myron Metcalf
It has become about race. It has become politicized. It has become, you know, so many different things cultural, and it's become bigger than basketball. And I'll say this. I don't think Caitlin or Angel have invited that. Like, I think they've just competed. But because of the way the Internet is, there are certainly people who are using events like this and going, okay.
Matt Jones
Sports people jump into it, on it. Like, I could not believe Robert Griffin's comments yesterday going, you can tell angel really doesn't lie or whatever that she gets angry. She was the one that got fouled. You know, when I. When the event happened last year, I thought Angel Reese took too much grief. But I did think, hey, she was the one that fouled it. She's the one that initiated it. Now it flips. Caitlin Clark does the foul. I don't think she did anything egregious either. That's basketball. And yet Angel Reese still got blamed for it, even though she was the one that got fouled. Like, I. There's a certain segment. It's like there's this idea that Caitlin Clark can do no wrong and Angel Reese can do no right. And I don't get that. That seems ridiculous to me. They're basketball players. They both have their moments in the right and the wrong.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, it just depends on who you ask. Again, like, if we're just talking basketball, I think most people saw that as a hard file. It should have been a flagrant foul. Caitlin Clark was wrong for that. But it happens, right? It wasn't anything beyond a flagrant for me. But again, we're going to have to. If we're going to have real conversations about the WNBA this year, we. We're going to have to block out the goofballs who are making this something that it shouldn't be, because that's not fair to these athletes. It's not fair to the real sports fans who saw it the way that you saw it as a basketball play.
Matt Jones
I think That's a really good. That's actually a really good piece of advice. I think we have to block out the goofballs. Do you think the WNBA conversation has been hijacked by goofballs?
Myron Metcalf
Yes, it's been hijacked by people who don't have an investment in the sport, but who have a lot to say about what Caitlin Clark represents to them, what Angel Reese represents to them. And I think that's unfair.
Matt Jones
Do you think, I mean, well, this is a broader conversation than the 20 seconds we have, but do you think it's good for the league in general to have this or not?
Myron Metcalf
It's good if people are reasonable about it. Yeah. It's bad if it goes to a whole nother space, which it could.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I kind of agree with you about that. You get both. You get some positive that we're leading the show with this, but then you also get the negative that comes with it, too. Well, there was another moment earlier this week. Pete Rose, too little, too late. That's next here on Sunday morning.
Myron Metcalf

Sunday morning here, Matt Myron, on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Well, I mean, this is first of all, let's get it on, which is great music for a Sunday morning and also great music for bringing in my guy, Moe Egger, host, the Mo egger show on ESPN 1530 in Cincinnati and the Mo Egger Podcast. Did you request this Mo as your interview?
Myron Metcalf
Did you want this? Like, what is that?
Evan
This was a condition of. This was a condition of my appearance. Yeah, absolutely.
Matt Jones
Well, good. I'm glad Mo is joining us. And when I think Cincinnati sports, I think of Mo. And of course, this week they renounced the lifetime. Well, I don't know exactly the wording, but Pete Rose is now eligible for the hall of Fame. I guess it was a lifetime ban that then the commissioner said, I'm renouncing, basically because he's dead, which they had never done before. And then they brought Shoeless Joe in, who's been dead for 40 years. You know, Mo, just you're as a Cincinnati person, we I thought this was coming. I think most people did. But explain to people what that decision meant for the people in Cincinnati was made Tuesday, and then Pete Rose Night had already been scheduled for Wednesday. So what was that like for everyone in Cincinnati?
Evan
I think most people took their cue from the Rose family. And, you know, you mentioned Pete Rose Night at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday. Fawn Rose, Pete's daughter, gave a speech, a brief one, but she expressed a great amount of gratitude to the commissioner's office. We had Pete Rose Jr. On our show. I know others did as well. And Pete Jr. Expressed a lot of gratitude for what baseball had chosen to do. And so I think, I think first of all, you have a lot of people who just said, great, too little too late. Like, fine, Pete Rose may make the hall of Fame one day. But I think everybody had been holding out hope that one day Pete was going to get his moment in Cooperstown. Obviously, that came and went on September 30th when Pete passed. I think, though, once people saw the joy and gratitude expressed by Pete's family, people latched on to that. I also think there's still some apprehension here because Pete's eligible for the hall of Fame, but there's certainly no guarantee that he is going to get in. And everybody that I have talked to who is familiar with the process, everybody who I have read who is familiar with the process, has expressed their doubts as to whether Pete's going to get in. Look, this is one of the most divisive topics. This is one of the most divisive figures in the history of American sports. And so the idea that you're going to get 12 out of 16 people on an eras committee to agree on Pete getting in, I think to me sounds a little far fetched, but we will see at least the doors open.
Myron Metcalf
Mo Rob Manfred had the opportunity to do this when Pete Rose was still alive. He still puts him in a position to be eligible, albeit after his death. How should we view Rob Manfred in all of this?
Evan
Think Rob Manfred basically said to the hall of Fame, he's yours now. You know, I think it's fair to wonder this. Look, Rob Manfred in his letter to Pete's attorney said, and I'm paraphrasing here, because he has passed, he is no longer a threat to baseball's integrity. And that's accurate. I would say this though, that when whenever we have talked about reinstatement and Pete Rose, it hasn't been so he can have an active role in the game, right? Like he wasn't going to be reinstated and then become like the Reds first base coach or being a dugout somewhere. So I would argue that the time long since passed where he was a threat to baseball's integrity. And so for me, I can't stand a Hall of Fame induction when the person being inducted isn't there. I was in Cooperstown in 2012. Barry Larkin got inducted. And so I went. And what I remember most about that day was Ron Santos induction after he had passed and his widow giving a speech that was moving and heartbreaking. It was a eulogy. It wasn't a celebration. Ken Riley, who played for the Cincinnati Bengals for 15 years, was inducted into the Pro Football hall of Fame a couple of years ago. And Ken had passed a year or two before his son gave a tremendous speech. That wasn't a celebration. That was a eulogy. So I have always felt like if you acknowledge that Pete is no longer an active threat to baseball's integrity, which I think at any point over the last 10 to 15 years, they could have done, at least he gets a chance to have his moment in Cooperstown. At least the hall of Fame and its induction process can decide whether Pete's going to get that chance. So the fact that Rob Manfred is essentially kicked into the hall of Fame, that's fine. He may get in, he may get. He may not get in. But when he does, what everybody here wanted was a chance to maybe see Pete give that hall of Fame induction speech. That's not going to happen.
Matt Jones
Well, you know, Major League Baseball, sponsored by FanDuel, needs to protect their integrity when it comes to gambling. If there's one thing that I am, that I'm certain of, I. By the way, I just, I just, I'm reading the Charlie Hustle book that came out last year. I don't know whether or not the Red fans and family and everybody, what they think of it. I really am enjoying the book because I do think it is a nuanced view of Pete, both pro and con, and I find it very interesting. Very well done. It's called Charlie Hustle for anybody who would care. But what I did notice by that, Mo, is it feels like to me, part of why it didn't happen was because he was alive and they didn't want to give him that moment because it mattered so much to him. They almost didn't want to give him the joy of having that moment. Mo, it's easier to do it now that he's dead.
Evan
Yeah. And I think part of that argument a lot of people would make too is, look, what was good for Pete Rose while he was alive, what was good for the business of Pete Rose while he was alive was being an exile. Right. Because once he gets in, he's just another hall of Famer now here in Cincinnati. But, you know, I think to a large degree, but the reason why so many books have been written, the reason why, you know, that four part documentary on Max that aired maybe a year and a half ago was done, is, is because he's an exile. It's because he's on the outside looking. And I do think to a large part, what was good for Pete Rose, the business of Pete Rose, was to be on the outside looking. And look, he's. He's a complicated figure. There's no getting around that. It feels like, you know, and you talked about the book. The more and more you learned about Pete Rose off the field, the more cringy things got right. And look, that's.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Evan
Whether it's fair or not, that's a part of the conversation. And I'm sure when he's on the hall of Fame ballot among the 16 people who are going to vote on whether or not he Gets in. You know, there's a character clause and you're going to have people who I'm sure take into account some of the non baseball playing stuff. But yeah, I think this was. I think this was pretty obvious what baseball did. They decided we are never going to give him that moment.
Matt Jones
But they didn't want to give. They want to give him the satisfaction. That to me was obvious. They didn't want to give him the satisfaction of winning. And that's what it is. Real quick, Mo, before you go, tell Myron I was calling this. This was going to be the summer of Ellie. It's been the summer Ellie Lee. Are we going to. Are we still going to have the summer of Ellie or. No.
Myron Metcalf
Mind you, Mo, he calls him Babe Ruth. He says he's the next Babe.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's my favorite baseball player of all time, which is. I'm 20 years older than him. So that shouldn't, that shouldn't be the case. But it is. But Mo, please tell Myron it's going to be the Summer Valley. Please.
Evan
It's going to happen. It's going to happen. I always bet on the talent. Ellie's got the talent. He's got to stop making errors at shortstop. He's got a shortened swing with two strikes. But when he's on the field, you still have a really good chance of seeing him do things that pretty much nobody else can do. I, I want it to be the summer of Ellie. I want it to be the summer of the Cincinnati Reds with their new hall of Fame manager. And so far it certainly hasn't been the spring.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'm giving up. I've long given on that.
Myron Metcalf
That.
Matt Jones
Just give me the summer mo Edgar Show, ESPN 1530 in Cincinnati and the Mo Edgar podcast. Thank you very much for your time, man.
Evan
All right, fellas. See you.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Why do you not like me like an Ellie? Why you gotta do that?
Myron Metcalf
I, like, I don't mind it. You're just not realistic. No, if I, I'm, I'm. You can like whoever you want, but like, are you talking.
Matt Jones
250 is not babe Ruth. Okay?
Myron Metcalf
You, you said literally after he came out of the Miners, he was like Mickey Metal or something. Like, it was, it was a lot early on, you know, it was a lot now you kind of backed off.
Matt Jones
He is electric though. I mean like, he does things nobody else can do, you know, and he's only, he's only 23. Let me remind you. He's only 23.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, but he's. Is he kind of the dude who like during warm ups can like do dunks between his legs and from the free throw line. Is he kind of that?
Matt Jones
He's 23. Do you, by the way, do you think Pete Rose. Let's say you're a voter. Is Pete Rose in the hall of Fame? Forget about what they will do. What should they do in your mind?
Myron Metcalf
He's in. I mean the character clause. I don't know. I don't know how to go through the list of hall of Famers and decide if they pass a character clause because if we're going to do that, then we got to have some hard conversations about other players. To me it's baseball because I don't know how to factor in everything else. Pete Rose in. You can't tell the story of baseball without Pete Rose. Like that's how I view the hall of Fame across any sport.
Matt Jones
Pete Rose is so famous. We know the pitcher that gave him his hit, that broke the record. That's how famous he is. Right. Or I do. Do you know the pitcher?
Myron Metcalf
I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
Matt Jones
Well, never mind. There goes my Evan. I was going to make a very strong about how we know the pitcher and Myron's like, don't know. Who is it? I don't.
Myron Metcalf
Well, tell me. Well, I mean I didn't watch Reds baseball for 40 years.
Matt Jones
It's not about Reds baseball. It's about.
Myron Metcalf
Well then tell me.
Matt Jones
Eric Shao. Eric Shao.
Myron Metcalf
I did not know that.
Matt Jones
All right, well then way to just completely deflate my point.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, but you can't just do something and say we know without asking me.
Matt Jones
I just thought we. Because I thought you were moderately like following the history of sports and you.
Myron Metcalf
Know, you have a. Yeah, you have a lot of ran over. How about this?
Matt Jones
You know who Pete Rose ran over at catcher in the All Star Game?
Myron Metcalf
It wasn't Johnny Bench. It was.
Matt Jones
Well, he. That was on his team. So.
Myron Metcalf
That was on his team. You're right. A good.
Matt Jones
Who is the person and they never played baseball again?
Myron Metcalf
Oh yeah, yeah. Was it a Yankees guy? No, he's right.
Advertiser
Ray Fosse.
Matt Jones
Ray Fosse. Thank you, Evan. I'm glad I have a host that knows something about history. Can you name this? You don't know the Utah Jazz that lost to Michael Jordan?
Myron Metcalf
Listen, listen, I don't know baseball history, especially Reds baseball history, as well as maybe some other things, but you know.
Matt Jones
My Metcalf, I've been sitting in the.
Myron Metcalf
Stands eating Skyline chili since 1987 or whatever you've been doing, watching Reds baseball, hoping for a miracle.
Matt Jones
I mean, I'm sorry, he is not Myron the Schwab. I can tell you.
Myron Metcalf
It's Reds baseball. I don't have to know that much.
Matt Jones
Reds. First of all, the Reds were the best team in the 70s. The Big Red Machine. Have you heard of it?
Myron Metcalf
I know. I know about what the Reds were. I get it. But I mean, they're not like a major franchise in sports history. Ray Fosse, everybody paid attention to.
Matt Jones
That's like anytime somebody gets hurt in an All Star Game. Yes, they say Ray Fosse. I mean, that's like a historic, like thing.
Myron Metcalf
I will remind you all again that we didn't sit at the same table in the cafeteria. And I don't think you all always understand that, but I think I need to remind people in this show sometimes that we just weren't at the same tables. And that's okay. So, like, what was common to you all? We were talking about whether Dominique Wilcos is better than Michael Jordan. Just different cafeteria.
Matt Jones
So you all didn't have a whole lot of Ray Fosse conversations in the cafeteria.
Myron Metcalf
Were you talking about Dominique Wilkins versus MJ? Probably not.
Matt Jones
I know this is Dominique Wilkins had 63 versus Larry Bird and the Celtics in 1988. So don't you act like I wasn't at that.
Myron Metcalf
And I bet y' all had a Larry Bird jersey over there. And we had.
Matt Jones
I wore Lakers stuff. That's what made me a liberal in eastern Kentucky is I wore Lakers stuff.
Myron Metcalf
Dominique. Dominique.
Matt Jones
I like Dominique Wilkins. Magic Johnson. I was excited about the 96 Masters. That's what I did. It's Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio.

Subway series coverage of Sunday night baseball began 6 Eastern on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Myron is trying to learn about CMA Fest because Matt Myron's gonna be live from Nashville From CMA Fest June 8th. 10 to 1. I don't know why they're sending us there, but I love it because it's not very far from me. And Myron gets to experience the world of modern country music, which. Which should be exciting. Myron, you ready for it?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I feel like this Beyonce album probably forced him to have another meeting. And then they were like, let's go. Send Myra.
Matt Jones
We're going down Saturday, so we're doing the show Sunday. We're gonna go down Saturday. I'm wearing my cowboy hat. I'll get you one if you want. We're gonna go Honky Tonkin, at least to the extent they do that in Nashville. In Nashville. It's a different place now. But. But, but would you. Are you ready for that?
Myron Metcalf
Maybe. Maybe. Yeah. I don't know what.
Matt Jones
Okay, so which bar do you want to go to? You got. They got. They got a Kid Rock bar. They got an Eric Church bar, a Morgan Wallen bar. Which of those. Which of those would you like to go to first?
Myron Metcalf
I guess it probably depends on who's at the door and let me in, because those are a couple places that I don't know if they're gonna let me in. But. But there's a huge lineup, man. Max Jackson. You know about Max Jackson playing.
Matt Jones
Why are you leading with Max Jackson? They got Midline, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker.
Myron Metcalf
Midland is playing.
Matt Jones
You don't know who these people are. You're just reading names.
Myron Metcalf
You don't know who these people are. Pistol Pearl and the Wester Band.
Matt Jones
It's gonna be there on the Western band. Pistol. Who is Pistol Pearl?
Myron Metcalf
If you were. If you were into the Tiktoks, then, you know, but that sounds like.
Matt Jones
That sounds like something that would be part of a circus in the 1930s. Here comes pistol Pearl and her traveling band. Sounds like a future.
Myron Metcalf
Yes, on Sunday morning.
Matt Jones
Yes, I'd like to have Pistol Pearl on if we could do it, please.
Myron Metcalf
Shaboozy's playing, and I'M wondering, like, is he gonna be intimidated and feel threatened a little bit? Cause I, you know, like, he probably expects to be the headliner. Now I'm showing up. I feel like I might throw him off a little bit.
Matt Jones
Listen, you and Jabuzi, if we're in the same room, you two will find each other and you will. You know how that goes.
Myron Metcalf
Does he have more than one song? Can he play a festival with one song?
Evan
Song?
Matt Jones
What. What is his song? What's it called? Everybody in the Club Getting Tips.
Myron Metcalf
Everybody. No, that's the chingy one. His thing is it's that same song remake of that song. But, like, can he play it?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Let me up a double shot of whiskey. But how do you. How do you play an hour show with that song?
Matt Jones
Just keep going. Anybody want to hear it again on a loop. Let's do it again. Yeah. Double shot Whiskey, you know, and then. You ready?
Myron Metcalf
Some more songs, man.
Matt Jones
I think he does all now. We're playing a new game on this show. You know, I. If you've listened, you might know that I'm a Kentucky fan, that I cover Kentucky. I mentioned it very rarely, Myron, but it sometimes comes up over the course of the show. So they have decided, you know, we have a lot of former players at Kentucky that have been really good in the NBA or that have done media or various things. So we're doing something this summer. They're surprising me with Guess that Wildcat. Every week or most weeks, they're going to have a former Wildcat guest. And then, Myron, they're going to try to get me to Guess who will be our guest. Do you like this game that we're playing and the fact that we're going to have Kentucky guests over the course of the summer?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, it seems intriguing. I don't know, like, how we're playing the game and, like, I need to hear the game first, but. No, it sounds interesting.
Matt Jones
But are you. Are you excited to have four Depends.
Myron Metcalf
On the Wildcats join? I mean, I have. There's. There's Wildcats I would love to hear from, you know, over maybe others. Nothing against them, but, like, who is.
Matt Jones
It you don't want to hear from? Is there anyone you don't like? It's a former Wild. Let's hope they're not our guests this.
Myron Metcalf
Week, by the way. It's not that I. Not that I don't want to hear from them, but there's certainly some more intriguing names that I hope are on the list. That's all.
Matt Jones
So just give me A couple of intriguing ones for you.
Myron Metcalf
I'd love to talk to John Wall. You know, I think he'd be a great guy to talk to. Tubby and I have a good relationship. Relationship.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
You know, I love Tubby. Tubby?
Matt Jones
I thought he didn't like you.
Myron Metcalf
No, no, we got over. We actually. We. We hung out one night in Atlanta till like 2 o' clock in the morning, and we was at a Shaboozi concert. No, no, no, no.
Matt Jones
He.
Myron Metcalf
He actually told me some great stories. He can't. He can't come to this thing with one song, man. Like, you can't be the only one and just play this song.
Matt Jones
All right, let's play the game. I don't know who the guest is. They're not. They're not going to tell me each week. So let's play Guess that Wildcat.
Myron Metcalf
It's time for Name.
Matt Jones
Name that Wildcat with Matt and Myrick. Guess that. Name that. I'll get the name of the game right at some point.
Myron Metcalf
This is serious.
Matt Jones
All right, Evan, give me my. I don't know how we play. So go ahead. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I'm just gonna give you clues and.
Matt Jones
If you want to guess after the clue or if you want me to go to another clue. All right, let's go. Here we go.
Myron Metcalf
I get to guess too, though. Yep, you do.
Matt Jones
So today's.
Myron Metcalf
Today's Wildcat played point guard at Kentucky.
Matt Jones
All right, so it could be John Wall, could be Tyler Eulis, could be Brandon Knight. Let's keep going. Who's next?
Myron Metcalf
Wait, I get. I get to guess, right?
Matt Jones
Dear box.
Myron Metcalf
Guess at the end.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Saul Smith. Okay.
Matt Jones
Saul Smith. Could be Saul Smith. All right, go ahead.
Myron Metcalf
He was the 1994 SEC tournament MVP. Oh, I got to know this. This is Derek. Not Derek.
Matt Jones
Derek. You don't know what. You don't know who it is? 94sc. Oh, wow. Oh, is this. No, he was gone by then. It's not Travis Ford.
Myron Metcalf
It wasn't there.
Matt Jones
Is this Wayne Turner? No, not Wayne.
Myron Metcalf
1994.
Matt Jones
94. I can't think.
Myron Metcalf
Not Derek Fisher. Why did I say that? Not Derek. You know, I'm talking about. Is it played with.
Matt Jones
No, it is Travis Ford. This is Travis Ford, right? Yes, Travis Ford.
Myron Metcalf
Is it Travis Ford?
Matt Jones
Wow. Travis Ford. Yes, the. He's the Coach now at St. Louis. He was the nine coach at St. Louis.
Myron Metcalf
He was not the coach at St. Louis anymore.
Matt Jones
Okay, but he was the coach at St. Louis.
Myron Metcalf
He's coached four different Division 1 programs. That was going to be.
Matt Jones
Yes, he's coached Oklahoma State. He coached. Look, can I guess? He coached Eastern Kentucky, Oklahoma State. He coached St. Louis. He also coached Campbellsville, which is not a Division 1 program. And then I don't know what the other one is. What's the other?
Myron Metcalf
I want to say UMass, but it was.
Matt Jones
That is correct. Oh, it is UMass. Look at that. Myron fist bump. You and I got all five of Travis Ford's coaching stops together with each other. That's good. Travis has done television so that he'll be. He'll be a good guest.
Myron Metcalf
Who's the Derek I'm thinking of that played with Ron Mercer and those dudes? Why can't I think of his last name?
Matt Jones
You're thinking of Anthony Epps. There is no Derek. Derek Jasper?
Myron Metcalf
No.
Matt Jones
Who am I Derek Miller played with?
Myron Metcalf
Who was the guard that got hurt with the 96 team? The guard? He got hurt.
Matt Jones
There wasn't a Derek.
Myron Metcalf
I know it's not Derek.
Matt Jones
Oh, you mean Derek Anderson. He played Derek Anderson.
Myron Metcalf
Yes.
Matt Jones
Derek Anderson.
Myron Metcalf
Yes. Yeah.
Matt Jones
You mean Derek played in the NBA.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Well, Travis Ford, nice job for the first one. How about me, Myron getting it in two guests with the 94 MVP.
Myron Metcalf
Good job.
Matt Jones
We will bring him on. Former D1 coach and we will get you ready for more of the games. Myron Metcalf, Matt Jones and the Shibuzzi Greatest hits next on Sunday Morning.

Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron
Episode: Hour 1: Rivalry on Repeat
Release Date: May 18, 2025
The episode opens with Matt Jones expressing deep concern and sympathy for the residents affected by a series of destructive tornadoes in Kentucky. Matt shares his personal experience visiting London, Kentucky, recalling the severe impact on the community.
Matt Jones [01:28]: "There were 18 official deaths. I think that number is probably going to rise. [...] it was without question probably the most devastating thing I've ever seen."
Myron Metcalf echoes Matt's sentiments, emphasizing the fragility of life and the suddenness of such natural disasters.
Myron Metcalf [03:42]: "It's almost surreal to see. [...] people literally lost everything in a moment, in an instant."
The conversation shifts to the PGA Championship, where Scotty Scheffler is making a significant comeback. Matt highlights Scheffler's arrest last year during a tournament in Kentucky and his current three-shot lead in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Matt Jones [05:09]: "Does Scotty close it out from jail to the crown in a year?"
Myron discusses the potential impact of Scheffler's performance, noting that a win would dramatically change the star power in the PGA Championship.
Myron Metcalf [05:24]: "If he wins it, that changes everything. [...] he was, what, five under in the last five holes? Just hit some incredible shots."
Matt and Myron delve into the thrilling conclusion of the Preakness Stakes, where the horse Journalism made a remarkable comeback to win the race. Matt narrates the intense finish, capturing the excitement of the moment.
Matt Jones [07:58]: "Journalism has won the break, the stakes. [...] you could hear that excitement from the Horse Racing Network."
Myron praises Journalism's performance and discusses the broader implications for the Triple Crown, expressing enthusiasm for future races.
Myron Metcalf [09:37]: "I want to see the best horses run all three races, because I think that'll put a bigger spotlight on the sport."
The hosts turn their attention to the NBA playoffs, specifically the high-stakes Game Seven between the Denver Nuggets and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The focus is on Aaron Gordon, whose participation is questionable due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain.
Matt Jones [14:07]: "Aaron Gordon has a grade 2 hamstring strain and needs several weeks to recover. [...] Do you think Aaron finds his way to the floor?"
Myron expresses skepticism about Gordon's ability to play, citing the risk of worsening his injury and the team's championship aspirations.
Myron Metcalf [14:29]: "I don't think so. [...] he has to sit out and hope for the best. Honestly."
A significant portion of the discussion centers on the escalating rivalry between WNBA stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Matt recounts a recent on-court altercation that intensified their competition, drawing parallels to previous encounters.
Matt Jones [16:55]: "Caitlin Clark pushes Angel Reese and Angel Reese gets right up into Caitlin Clark afterwards has something to say as Clark walks away."
Myron emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy competition without letting extremist fan behavior overshadow the athletes' performances.
Myron Metcalf [17:32]: "It's cool. [...] I think most people are level-headed about sports and competition, but there's certainly some extremists on all sides."
The hosts discuss the broader cultural implications, with Myron pointing out how online narratives have politicized their rivalry.
Myron Metcalf [19:48]: "It has become about race. It has become politicized. [...] just competed."
The conversation shifts to Major League Baseball's recent decision to make Pete Rose eligible for the Hall of Fame posthumously. Matt and Myron delve into the implications of this move, reflecting on Rose's legacy and the divisive opinions surrounding his induction.
Evan [25:01]: "It's one of the most divisive topics. [...] I think it's fair to wonder this."
Matt highlights the emotional aspect of the decision, questioning whether Rose will ever receive the recognition he sought.
Matt Jones [30:24]: "They didn't want to give him the satisfaction of winning. And that's what it is."
Myron discusses the challenges of assessing Rose's eligibility, considering both his on-field achievements and off-field controversies.
Myron Metcalf [33:46]: "You can't tell the story of baseball without Pete Rose. [...] across any sport."
Looking ahead, Matt and Myron express excitement about attending the CMA Fest in Nashville. They discuss the lineup of artists and their plans to experience the world of modern country music.
Matt Jones [38:24]: "We're going down Saturday, so we're doing the show Sunday. [...] Let's be honest."
Myron Metcalf [39:22]: "Maybe. Maybe. I don't know what."
In a playful interactive segment, Matt and Myron introduce a new game called "Guess that Wildcat," where they challenge each other to identify former University of Kentucky athletes based on clues.
Matt Jones [42:01]: "We're doing something this summer. [...] Guess that Wildcat."
The segment features light-hearted banter and showcases their camaraderie, adding a fun element to the show.
The episode wraps up with a preview of upcoming topics, including more sports discussions and interactions with special guests. Matt and Myron reaffirm their commitment to delivering engaging and insightful content every Sunday morning.
