Matt Jones
This is Matt and Myron, the podcast.
It is Canada kickoff here on ESPN Radio, presented by Bre Insurance. I'm Matt Jones with Meer Metcalf. You all are all enjoying yourselves on a Sunday morning. I'm in Kentucky where it's snowing, but it's otherwise. Otherwise, a nice day for what is part two today of what some say is the best football weekend of the year. I throw a challenge flag on that, but I do. I did enjoy watching the games yesterday. And we're ready for two more today, Myron. It is for me and you. This is the perfect time. We get our two things that we claim to know about the NFL and college basketball going together at once. Were you on your television all day and night yesterday?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, man. I mean, it was opposed to every other Saturday. Well, it was. Yeah, it was remarkable, man. I mean, you, you, you got football. College basketball was incredible. I snuck in some Australian Open, although I'm not a big fan of like making us watch after Midnight, you know, these Australian Open games.
Matt Jones
But you think they do that on. They're like these people in America, we're going to change our time zone to hurt them.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, if we don't watch it, it doesn't matter as much. So I think.
Matt Jones
Is that true?
Myron Metcalf
I think that's.
Matt Jones
Does the Australian Open not matter unless it's being watched in America?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, does it, does it make a sound if it doesn't make a sound in America? I think, like.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, we, we are, we care about tennis much less than the rest of the world.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, I just changed the times around so I don't have to watch it. That's my, that's my only.
Matt Jones
You said you watched the Australian Open. I kind of find a hard time. I kind of feel like I have a hard time believing that. So tell me something about the Australian Open that you watched.
Myron Metcalf
Naomi Osaka lost in the. That was like quarter, second round cocoa. Golf has been cruising.
Matt Jones
That was not. You said you watched it yesterday. So, like, what, what do you, what did you hear yesterday? Something you wouldn't have seen on the esp.
Myron Metcalf
There was an upset. There was an upset. There was a. There was a guy. I think he was from maybe Germany, Austria somewhere, and he was older, and he beat a young guy.
Matt Jones
Okay, so hang on. Let's leave it right there.
Myron Metcalf
Davili, I think, was.
Matt Jones
Will you look up and see if a guy from Germany or Austria that was older?
Myron Metcalf
I think he was Davili.
Matt Jones
Or maybe upset a young guy. First of all, that was great description.
Myron Metcalf
I think his name is Davili. No, I think that's his name. It's Davili.
Matt Jones
You think it's a German guy named Davili?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, he. I don't know. He might have been from France. I'm not. I don't remember. It was one of those countries up there.
Matt Jones
So now we're back to Germany, Austria.
Myron Metcalf
It was one of those countries up there. You know what I'm saying?
Matt Jones
One of those countries up there.
Myron Metcalf
Older guy upsets a younger, beat a younger guy. A lot of people thought he was over the hill.
Matt Jones
Seems to have really made an impression on you.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. So, no, that was fun to watch. There was some UFC news.
Matt Jones
I was gonna check and see if that happened yesterday at the Australian Open.
Myron Metcalf
It did. It definitely happened because he was an underdog.
Matt Jones
That being, I'm leaning towards. Something happened. I just don't know that it was that that happened. All right, so the NFL game, I mean, probably the big story from yesterday's number one seed, Detroit Lions.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, man. Yeah.
Matt Jones
Are out. Commanders just were able to score. It will 45, 31. Two turnovers by Jared Goff in the first half hurt them. The Commanders reached the conference championship for the first time since 1991. Mark Rippon as the quarterback, and they won the super bowl that year. 45 points, the fourth most points by a team against the number one seed since seeding began. You watched the game. Commanders kind of took control in the second quarter and never looked back. We saw. I thought. I honestly had a moment, which doesn't happen for me a lot, where you're watching the game and you go, that guy still plays football, and he's in a huge moment. When Teddy Bridgewater came into the game, I was certain he was a high school coach, because I remember seeing the post, and somehow he was in the game. You feel sorry for the Lions, though. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Teddy Bridger is, like, on a sitcom, like an ex quarterback who now is a high school teacher.
Matt Jones
Damn backyard.
Myron Metcalf
And then the starting quarterback of his pro team gets hurt. Like, that'd be a good series that someone should, I think, put together. But I Feel bad for Detroit, man. And, you know, I know we're not supposed to do that necessarily, but, like, I like the city of Detroit. This was their moment. When will it get easier than this, Matt? When are you going to have a chance to host in the playoffs in the nfc? Okay, you got to be Washington and then maybe Philly or la, but they got to come to you. And let's say you got to play Kansas City. You know, this doesn't look like the best Kansas City team, but still really good team. So now you lose like that, people will never trust Detroit again.
Matt Jones
See, that's what I was going to say. When you have in all sports, when someone has a ridiculously good regular season and then crashes out early in the playoffs, even before they get to, like a finals, it is one of the more unfulfilling things in sports for a fan base. Like for me, the 2015 Kentucky team that went 38. One, it's so hard because they were undefeated. They get to the semifinals and lose, and it always feels like we didn't even get to play in the game that would have done it. In football, we've seen this a couple of times. But when you have, when you're Detroit and you're 15 and two, maybe the best regular season of your modern era.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And not only do you lose, but you lose to the six seed in a game where basically you're down double digits the last three quarters of the game, Byron, that has to be such an unfulfilling end. And I think you're right. It's going to make Detroit fans very skeptical no matter what they do next year in the regular season.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, you went from Detroit getting to the super bowl potentially to no silver lining. I think in this series, like, there's. There's nothing you take away from that season now because of how it ended. And I think that to me is the biggest thing.
Matt Jones
Do you think the two coordinators going for jobs, like, if you were going to hire Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn, would you be like, well, I can't do it after that?
Myron Metcalf
No, I don't think that. I mean, that process has already happened. So, I mean, there was a terrible.
Matt Jones
Play call by Ben Johnson there at the end with that wide receiver pass. He was a little too in his bag.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, Ben. Ben will still get a job and Aaron Glenn will too. I think the bigger question, Matt, is Detroit may never get this opportunity again. Well, at least in the Dan Campbell era.
Matt Jones
But if both those guys take a job. Yeah, you're almost. Then Also starting a new next year.
Myron Metcalf
Even after this disappointment and you're starting a new. And, and the rule, I've told people about this rule and you got a lot of old school football guys who go, no, that's not the case. Defense wins championships. You need a Hall of Fame quarterback to win a Super Bowl. Like that is the. The most teams. That's the circumstance.
Matt Jones
I love how you have co opted my rule.
Myron Metcalf
No, I came up with that. Did you hear that?
Matt Jones
No.
Myron Metcalf
What is my what if.
Matt Jones
What have I said about court? You either got to have a rookie or you gotta go or you gotta have a Hall of Fame.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, you have said that. You have said that. I have said. No, no, no, I. You have said that. I'll give you credit for that. The rookie hall of Fame thing. I have said that. In the last 25 years, the NFL only Hall of Fame quarterbacks have won championships. Like that's just the reality. And anyone who hasn't is an exception. Well, that's not the rule.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but. Well, okay, yes, that's more often than not true.
Myron Metcalf
No, that you think I stole your talking points. Is that what you.
Matt Jones
I Nick, you are the producer. Did he steal that talking. Have I not made that talking point?
Unknown Producer
I do believe that it's been said quite a bit on the show and I now I'm trying to think about it. I do believe it was Matt that always said you need a Hall of Famer or a rookie.
Myron Metcalf
Of course you do. Of course you do.
Matt Jones
By a rookie, I mean somebody a rookie contract.
Unknown Producer
Myron, I would never go against you.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. Of course you think that would you also like. My point is.
Matt Jones
Hang on, we'll get to the Australia. I would say. Go ahead.
Myron Metcalf
My point is the limitations of Jared Goff. That's also the big concern because I agree. I feel like 45 yesterday. No, but, but the three interceptions, right. @ the end of the day, they put up big numbers. The challenge is. And the Vikings are dealing with this too. If you have a Sam Darnold, a Jared Golf, a quarterback in that tier, Baker Mayfield, they can get you to the playoffs. They can even help you win a game. But it's hard for those guys to elevate you to that super bowl level.
Matt Jones
I think that's right. Let me ask you, do you. Do you expect that the Commanders will have a chance to win next week against whoever they play? I mean, they look great. Jaden Daniel's been amazing.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I'm probably picking them over the winner of today, no matter what.
Matt Jones
Oh, okay. Well, let's Hang on. I want to explore that with you. Now you look. Did you look up? Is Myron's Australian Open fag?
Myron Metcalf
I'm telling you, man.
Matt Jones
Does a dude name German or a Polish guy or quote someone from there? Be old guy upset a young guy? Did that happen?
Unknown Producer
All right. The closest I could find was Thursday. A pretty big upset.
Matt Jones
Thursday.
Unknown Producer
An American Lerner TN upset Medvedev.
Myron Metcalf
That's what I'm saying. That's what I was talking about.
Matt Jones
No, no, no, no. First of all, you. I said yesterday that was Thursday. That was an American. And if Lynn is young and he's 19 years old, you said there was an old guy that upset a young guy. So you got not one fact correct.
Myron Metcalf
Gail Monfields.
Matt Jones
First of all, his name is not Monfields. It's Mon fee.
Myron Metcalf
My community.
Matt Jones
It's Mon Fee. He's French. He is. And he is, by the way, also good. Like, he is like a legendary player.
Myron Metcalf
But he upset Taylor Fritz.
Matt Jones
That was not yesterday. That was.
Unknown Producer
That was Friday.
Matt Jones
That was not yesterday.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, but it was still.
Matt Jones
He's also not German.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, but I said a veteran. I said an older dude that people think is over.
Matt Jones
So you're going to take credit. A young guy, any old guy beating a young.
Myron Metcalf
That was him. I said Davili. I knew there was like a. There was like a name like that.
Matt Jones
Said the villi. This is Mon fee.
Myron Metcalf
Close. Close.
Matt Jones
That's close.
Myron Metcalf
That's very close.
Matt Jones
How's that close?
Myron Metcalf
There's an I in both words.
Matt Jones
There's an I in both words. Well, there's only five vowels.
Myron Metcalf
That one has be in it. There's an I and an L. And I said a veteran. Beat it. Beat a young guy. And I was right.
Matt Jones
You just don't want to give me credit for the I fee you do not pronounce or. Excuse me, the l and mon fee.
Myron Metcalf
You do not pronounce again, in my community, we don't pronounce that. But I. I'm telling you what. I said a veteran over a young dude.
Matt Jones
And I think I was yesterday it was. No, it was Friday.
Myron Metcalf
You know, Australia, they're like three days ahead of us or something. I told you at that time three days ago.
Matt Jones
Yes, it was three days ago, actually.
Myron Metcalf
Then today in Australia, they're. They're days.
Matt Jones
No, no, Australia's not.
Myron Metcalf
Go look it up. You think it's Tuesday in Australia right now?
Matt Jones
3 days ago in America.
Myron Metcalf
It's Tuesday in Australia right now. Go look it up 16 hours ahead.
Matt Jones
It's be a part of Catnanicuff Nation on the tedious Tuesday on the Dr. Pepper calling line. Call us 888- say ESPN. That's 888-729-3776. ESPN Nation is presented by Dr. Pepper and Gail Monfee. It's not college football season without the delicious taste of an ice cold pepper. College pepper. It's a pepper thing. I don't think Myron's totally clear what happened on the Chiefs game either, but we'll update it and then get his opinion. That's next here on Countdown to Kickoff.
The NFL Playoffs on ESPN Radio.
Touchdown Lamar.
Myron Metcalf
The latest news, everything he said they needed to hear.
Matt Jones
Loss predictions and reaction.
Myron Metcalf

The Kansas City Chiefs are advancing to the AFC championship game for a remarkable seventh consecutive year.
Myron Metcalf
That's awesome. You know, that's the goal is to.
Matt Jones
Continue to move on in the playoffs.
Myron Metcalf
And another good team football win. We gotta be better offensively in some.
Matt Jones
Situations, but you get a win and that's all you want. At the end of the day, that's a good football team. Proud of our guys for how they handled it. And we knocked a little rust up. Everybody saw stayed positive and here we sit with the championship game.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, we're humbled to be in that position.
Matt Jones
City Chiefs with their eighth straight playoff win. It's the third longest streak in history and now their seventh straight conference championship. Second longest streak. Besides of course, the legendary Patriots, who went to eight. It Is countdown to kickoff on ESPN Radio. You're hearing Taylor Swift because she was there in an iconic photo with Caitlin Clark. Well, was there more like, you know, 2024 star power in one box ever? I mean, like, you know, maybe the two biggest figures, biggest figure in sports and entertainment in 2024 sitting in the.
Myron Metcalf
Same box at a game and a reason for the bros to get mad one way or the other, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah. Whichever side you're on, you hated the other one for being there. That's right. All right, so the game itself, you know, I've taken the view since about week six. And honestly, I've had this view the last three or four years, but I'm picking my homes until he loses.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And we saw that again yesterday. They end up the. The drive that was the big one was after the Texans cut it to 1. Mahomes go straight down the field. It's a great. It's a perfect drive for narrative in the NFL, Myron, because you can see what you want to see. Right. If you are a Chiefs hater, you can point to those two personal foul calls and go see, the NFL always cheats for Mahomes.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
If you're a Mahomes like me and you think he's a star, you could see that pass he made while he was throwing falling down to Kelsey. And you can say, no one else can do that. That's why the Chiefs are the Chiefs. So you can see whatever it is you want to see. But it was the key possession and how the game ended up.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. And I think, you know, I think if you're going to go to Kansas City, you got to know that those calls are going to happen in Kansas City's favor. You know, it's hard to get to my homes because you can see players, Matt, how cautious they are when they are near him compared to everybody else in the league. Like, there is this sense of if I touch him, there could be a personal file as a result of that. But you also gotta give him full credit for being able to drive down the field. And I tweeted that essentially I had never seen anything like that. Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow did something like that.
Matt Jones
He had a pass.
Myron Metcalf
He's fallen down. Jared Goff yesterday had something like that. But I haven't seen someone who literally looked like they were going to get sacked. And the play was over. And then Mahomes still delivers. Amazing.
Matt Jones
Let me ask you a question. How was Kelsey open all day yesterday? How do you. If you are Houston, how do you let Travis Kelce, who I think has been great, but maybe not as great this year as most of his career. How do you let him get open for 100 yards yesterday?
Myron Metcalf
First off, Travis Kelsey was definitely playing like Taylor Swift was in the building. I mean that was, that was that. Watch this. Right? But I think what's. What has to scare, not even just the AFC but the entire NFL is. No one else really made an impact in that game.
Matt Jones
It was just, it was Kelsey.
Myron Metcalf
It was just Mahomes to Kelsey and.
Matt Jones
There'S nothing they could do.
Myron Metcalf
Nobody, nobody could stop it.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And the most amazing thing I think about that game is you think about Deandre Hopkins, you think about juju Smith Schuster, Hollywood Brown. Zero catches yesterday. Zero. So these guys who were brought in to help expand the passing game from homes didn't make an impact. And yet no one could do anything.
Matt Jones
With Kelsey Worthy, the only wide receiver on the team to get a catch.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know what you do.
Matt Jones
I want to go back to Kelsey for a second. You know, again, this is kind of what frustrates me with the way the sport is covered now is everyone has such short memories. You know, it was only like week six that there were people going. Kelsey's basically washed, right? Like it's over. You know, Kelsey isn't the same Kelsey, even though he had been great just a few months before. Then there were the people who were like, ah, Taylor, whatever. But here's the thing. It didn't matter in week six, right. It matters now. And when it matters, that dude is there and it's been like that. So that goes back like next week everyone is going to pick or a lot of people are going to pick who wins this Baltimore Buffalo game. I'm staying with Kansas City, Myron, until they lose.
Myron Metcalf
No, I mean, you know that stands made a lot of sense after what we saw yesterday. It was a very one dimensional attack. It wasn't Kansas City's best performance on either side of the ball. And yet here they are advancing now. I do think the Texans, you know, sort of stumbled into this moment after playing the Chargers and Justin Herman had four interceptions. So this is going to be a different task against Baltimore or Buffalo. But you look at the Kansas City Chiefs and go, they can play a lot better than what they did. There are other targets that can get involved next week. But when Kelsey is playing like that.
Matt Jones
And remember, and the cold bother Houston, by the way, I, as soon as I saw Dico Ryan come out with his whole face covered up, you know, like, like he looked like I looked like during COVID Like, as soon as I saw that, I thought, they're not ready for this. You know what I mean?
Myron Metcalf
It's a lot, man. It. That's one thing you can't adjust to. You can't prepare for that. I think that affected them, But I also think, like, Houston had peaked and everyone kind of knew that. But Baltimore and Buffalo look like they're getting even better week to week, and that's going to be a different thing for Kansas City. To your point, though, to your point, though, about Kelsey, I think sometimes with the Taylor Swift thing and all the other stuff, we forget he's the greatest tight end in NFL history.
Matt Jones
Yes. And he reminds me of at the end of Gronk, where Gronk wouldn't be great. And then the playoffs would come and it would be. It would be Gronk again. All right, so we do have to talk about the calls. Here was my take on the two personal fouls. I thought the first one was a weak call, probably shouldn't have been made. I actually thought the second one was targeting. He did lead with the crown of his helmet, and he did hit his helmet. Now, I mean, you could argue that that's not fair to the player. I get it, but that's the rule, and by the rule, he did it. So I actually was fine with the second one.
Myron Metcalf
My challenge is we are how many years into video review, all of these checks and balances in the NFL, right, that are supposed to put us in a position where there isn't doubt about a call. Like you. Like, we get it right, and we're still in these moments where, okay, it could go one way, it could go the other. I mean, that to me is the most frustrating part.
Matt Jones
That's just natural. I mean, there's going to be things that are close and video repo. I mean, again, back. Let's take the second of those calls. The second of those calls. You can see what you want to see there. If you want to say that the refs cheat for the Chiefs, which a lot of people clearly do, you can say, he waited till the last minute. He slid. What do you want the guy to do? He barely touched his helmet. Like, you can say all that at the other side. If you want to say the rule is you can't lean with lead with the crown of your helmet and hit the other guy in the helmet. He did that. So I think part of it is there's always going to be some argument because. And then with Mahomes, it's even more because there's this narrative that he's spoiled by the refs.
Myron Metcalf
I think you and I both know that exact scenario that happened. If you tell me that that happens to Jared Goff, Baker Mayfield, if you tell me that that happens to Jalen Hurts today or Josh, that call probably not made.
Matt Jones
I mean, I disagree with you on the second one. On the first one. I do agree with you on the first one. Mahomes gets that call. But you know who else got that call? Brady. You know who else got that call? Manning, you know, got that call.
Myron Metcalf
But that's, but that's not okay, though.
Matt Jones
If they all got that call.
Myron Metcalf
But if, but if that's the case, that's not okay.
Matt Jones
I mean, Jordan pushed off on that shotgun.
Myron Metcalf
But that's, but that doesn't help the people who feel like Mahomes is getting opportunities that other people aren't getting. Like, that doesn't help.
Matt Jones
But when you're a star, it's kind of the way you walk around espn. You get to do things. There's like you and two other people. I won't mention who they are, but they get to do other things other people can't do. No, that's just how it is when you got the juice, you get to do things other people can't do.
Myron Metcalf
But I don't, I don't like it, though. I mean, I think it's fair.
Matt Jones
You use it.
Myron Metcalf
I see you walking around. No way. It's not fair. It's not fair.
Matt Jones
I've not seen you pay for something at the stack machine.
Myron Metcalf
That's not, that's not true. That's not true at all. I just think we have a new conversation about targeting and what's fair and what's not every week, and I'm tired of it.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Now there's two more games today that may even be better. We got to get to it. It's Matt Jones and Myron A. Metcalf right here next on espn.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, it's Rachelle Smallman.
Matt Jones
And coming up Monday, we'll react to.
Myron Metcalf
The divisional round games as well as look ahead to the college football national championship.
Matt Jones
It's on Sportsman like 6am east right.
Myron Metcalf

What a weekend it will be in the NFL. Highlighted by Ravens, Bills.
Myron Metcalf
This is as heavyweight as a heavyweight fight can be.
Matt Jones
Oh, my God, what a game. Will the real MVP stand up? Is it Josh Allen? Looking for Allen. He's got it. Touchdown, Bill. It's a Lamar Jackson Touchdown, Lamar.
Myron Metcalf
You got to go out of champion. That's what I want, to be labeled as a champion. At the end of the season, there's one happy team. We're going to keep fighting until we are that one team. The one thing that you have to see this postseason. Yes, we have to see Lamar and Josh.
Matt Jones
And we get it. Who is the. Who's the person in that clip? Who said, will the real MVP please stand up?
Unknown Producer
I believe that was Dominique.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
All right.
Matt Jones
So Dominique giving a little Eminem shout out into his thing. I was kind of thinking it was gonna be somebody that I was gonna have to make a photo for saying that, but if it's Dominique. All right, I'll let it go.
Myron Metcalf
Hold on. Wait. You can't make. What?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, you know me. I don't know any of these people. I'll make fun of. You Will again, you're the only person I know at espn. I don't have to worry about running into somebody.
Myron Metcalf
You gotta stop me sometimes, know who I am.
Matt Jones
So it's fine. I know you. I know Marty McGee, and I know. Well, that's it. I know three of you. That's it. Those are the only people. It is countdown to kickoff here on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. For those of you listening to the show, I have a text machine that you can text in and we can comment during the show. It is 772-774-5254. One person writes. Matt, I was watching the Australian Open like Myron was, and I saw that one woman beat the other. And in a matchup that was last Wednesday, and, man, I can't stop talking about it. It's kind of like you with the. With your pick.
Myron Metcalf
They enjoyed it. I'm glad they enjoyed it. I've enjoyed it the same way. Yes, I've joined. I've joined it the same way.
Matt Jones
All right, so the. It was. Oh, excuse me. Jason McCordick. Okay, I don't. Who is that?
Myron Metcalf
Who did you say it was?
Unknown Producer
I thought it was Dominique, but then.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, of course y'all did. All right. This is what we deal with.
Matt Jones
He was like, Dominique I don't know. This is what we deal, Metcalf. It could have been anybody.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Okay. Is Jason McCourty on our airwaves?
Unknown Producer
Yeah, he does. He does get up. He does. Oh, I like radio.
Matt Jones
I watch it.
Myron Metcalf
McCourty does a lot. He's a hell of a player too.
Matt Jones
I don't miss get up almost any day. All right, so the Ravens and the Bills. See I'm gonna get. You can get me in trouble. Ravens and the Bills.
Myron Metcalf
You get yourself in trouble.
Matt Jones
You.
Myron Metcalf
No, no, no. You're one of those people like you're gonna get me in trouble when you clearly are trying to get yourself in trouble. I'm trying to get myself. I know, but that's.
Matt Jones
I'm just having fun where it's all fun here.
Myron Metcalf
Watch.
Matt Jones
Get up. Ravens and the Bills.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Tonight at 6:30. I mean this is prime time. There's a decent chance this is the best game of the playoffs. I mean if you, if you're talking about. Yeah, we talked about how Kentucky and Alabama played college basketball. You say you can't have two more fun teams playing each against each other style wise than these two. Same thing tonight if you're going to pick the two most fun teams in the NFL to watch play. You picking the Ravens and the Bills bit, Myron. You are, aren't you?
Myron Metcalf
Oh, 100%. And kudos to the NFL schedulers for giving us this game in prime time on Sunday and early enough.
Matt Jones
6:30 so it's not like we're trying to stay awake. Great call on the time. It's going to be awesome. Now it's the second time they played each other in the playoffs. They did it in 2020 and the Bills beat the Ravens 17 to 3. There's no way it's not higher scoring than this. Everybody's going to want to focus, Myron, on. Oh, of course. You know, it's Lamar versus Josh. Part of what I like about it is I think Lamar and Josh neck and neck. I think Lamar supporting cast might be better than Josh is supporting cast. But it's in Buffalo, in the elements there and I think that evens that out. I think these two teams literally are dead even. And that's partially why I'm so excited about the game.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean the initial spread, I think it was what Baltimore was a one point favorite. I mean that flipping back.
Matt Jones
Well now it's settled at Baltimore minus one. But his flip back and forth because the NFL never makes it pick them. It's always one either way and it is which Shows you that the. It's. It's equal in most people's eyes.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, there's a strong argument for each team. Right. I mean, I think you can see how this Buffalo team, especially at home, and those elements where they play better than anybody else, how they get a big win. I mean, Josh Allen has been one of the most balanced quarterbacks. His efficiency, the way that he's running, and he's doing it with a group of guys that are all new for the most part. I mean, you lose Stefan Diggs, you lose all. Lose all those defensive pieces. So I think Josh Allen has accomplished so much, proven that it was him the whole time. You know, it wasn't just a supporting cast. He's good enough to elevate whoever you put around him. And now here they are. I think Lamar Jackson plays some of the best football we've ever seen, and he's got to win MVP as a result. His third mvp. He also has the best supporting cast he's ever had. So I think with Lamar Jackson, there's a sense of urgency here where you're like, all right, man, if you're going to get one. This feels like the moment. Last year, you're the 1 seed, you host Kansas City, you lose that game. Now you're playing Josh Allen and Mahomes, but you have the best team you've ever had.
Matt Jones
This feels like a moment, moments for both these guys. Because we've talked for years. I mean, we're not the only people who've talked about it. Anybody who talks about the NFL says the AFC is significantly better at the top than the nfc.
Myron Metcalf
So.
Matt Jones
And you got these great quarterbacks. I mean, without question, in my opinion, the four best quarterbacks in the league are in the afc. So you get these windows to win. And for Kansas City, the last two years, last year and this year are probably the worst. Mahomes, Kansas City teams. Would you agree with that?
Myron Metcalf
Yep.
Matt Jones
And yet last year they still want it. Maybe they'll still win it this year. I think Kansas City is going to get better. Some stuff goes off the cap. I actually think in the next few years, they're going to build the next generation of Kansas City City. So you got this window here, Byron, where if you're Lamar Jackson and then Burrow didn't make the playoffs, you got this window with Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, where you might never have a better chance than this. Except when Buffalo had a better chance last year and didn't do it.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
If you don't do it this year, I'M not saying you can never do it, but you've now given up two years of your best shots to steal one. The loser today, I think that will. That will really be a big deal, that they will have had two shots to steal one when the other team was at their low point, and they won't be able to do it.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I think you hit it, man. This will be like all the teams we talked about who had a shot in 94, 95 when Jordan was out. I mean, like all those teams that could have won championships, you know, And I think we'll look at these two years like that. It won't get better than this. It won't get easier than this. Right. No one's intimidated by this or those.
Matt Jones
Years between the Brady run.
Myron Metcalf
True.
Matt Jones
Right. Like you had those years when the. When the Patriots were kind of getting their second wave. It's kind of like that.
Myron Metcalf
When I also think with. It's different to me with Lamar compared to Josh Allen. Josh Allen, I think, can play this way and they can just keep putting people around him, and for the next decade, he's going to get his shot. I think Lamar, as great as he is, literally played the. Some of the best football we've ever seen, created a club, 4,000 passing yards, 800 rushing yards. No one had ever done that. But the mobility thing going into your 30s is a real thing. He will lose a step, even for a guy like that. He'll still be very mobile, very fast.
Matt Jones
But aren't you more confident than you were that he can do it at an older age? Like, I didn't think he could. But the Lamar we've seen this year is a different Lamar.
Myron Metcalf
I think he can do it in the years ahead, but long term, it's just going to be harder. When I say mobile quarterback, I'm not even talking about the running, the way that he puts himself in a position to throw the ball. I don't think he has a better chance than what he's had over these last couple of years. And now you got Derrick Henry playing at a very high level. I think that this feels like the moment.
Matt Jones
That's the key is that he now has this second unbelievable weapon. And I don't know how long Derek Henry can do it, but he won't be able to do it forever.
Myron Metcalf
No.
Matt Jones
So for both these guys, I think there's a belief that, look, these two are amazing, but there is. Would you agree that for both of them, there is a little bit of playoff disappointment that hangs on their career?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, no, for different reasons too. If you look at Josh Allen in the playoffs, he's had some huge games. He just hasn't had the results ultimately with Lamar, I think it's been the big mistakes that have that he's made in these moments. The interceptions, the fumbles, things like that. So I think both guys are trying to find a way to get to the only thing that ultimately matters for. And I know you hate this word, but I'm still gonna say it. Don't say, I know you hate it, but this is what today is about. This is what matters today. Legacy.
Matt Jones
Well, I think we will look at the loser of this game, these two guys. So when you're comparing the quarterbacks, you basically say, when I look at the four best quarterbacks, you go, okay, Mahomes is the best because he wins the most. You look at Burrow and you say, okay, he had some problems with his team, but he's still been to a Super Bowl. And then there's this Lamar, Josh, which I think most people believe are the two most talented quarterbacks in the NFL. Yeah, but they haven't won like Mahomes. They haven't been to a Super bowl like Burrow. So they're almost placed together in this. Okay, which one you got after tonight? Whoever wins will have a leg up on that. That will stay for a while, I think. You know, Mahomes has got his slot. The winner, Burrow has got his slot. Not the best team, but been to a Super Bowl. And now these two are fighting for most talented slot. And I think there's a really good chance, Myron, the winner tonight is the one that gets it.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I think someone, someone is playing to be this generation's Aaron Rodgers. Right. I mean, a guy who found a way to go to the super bowl during the Brady era, as difficult as that was, someone is playing to be Dan Marino, a guy who will always sort of be an afterthought long term. Even though that's unfair. That's just the way we look at quarterbacks.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's the way it is. And there's, there's. I can't remember the last time in an individual NFL game that there were two guys who sort of reputation and standing in the league now is so dependent on the result of a game tonight. And it's two of them. Sometimes it's one, but now this is two. And one of them is going to win and one of them is going to lose. And the one that loses, it's going to be sad. And the One that wins will almost have a notch in the, in his belt on the career that will last a long time. Coming up next.
Myron Metcalf
But that's.
Matt Jones
We, we sounded like we really knew what we were talking about. Like that might, that was.
Unknown Producer
I was thinking, I was like, I may cut this. You guys sound really good right now.
Matt Jones
That might have been the most profound professional radio segment that I can remember us doing.
Myron Metcalf
That's good.
Matt Jones
I think it's because I said you were my Renee Metcalf and you just brought it in. This segment. Coming up next, the coaching carousel is underway. But who will be left out in the cold? That's next here. I got to kick off on ESPN. Right?
It's bowl season on ESPN Radio. 25 bowl games, including the College Football Playoff and National championship game.
Election, electricity, the atmosphere.
The College Football Playoff national championship coverage begins tomorrow at 6:30 Eastern on ESPN Radio. And on ESPN, Matt and Myron, the podcast.
It is kind of kickoff here on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Yesterday, a couple of hot names in the NFL coaching search. Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn had not so great endings to their season. They are still one of many coaching opening candidates. You got the Bears, the Jets, the Jaguars, the Titans, the Cowboys, the Saints, and the Raiders. Seven teams still looking for a coach. Wait a minute. You took one off. Which one did you take off?
Unknown Producer
Not the Titans. They're looking for a gm.
Myron Metcalf
They want a gm. Yep.
Matt Jones
So you just had me doing a Ron Burgundy there.
Unknown Producer
Well, they're so bad, I don't know what opening they have.
Matt Jones
I end up saying it. And welcome. Stay classy, San Diego. All right, six teams. Bears, Jets, Jaguars, Cowboys, Saints, and Raiders. Myron, I don't know about you. First of all, I'm a little surprised. I don't, in years past, remember the coaching searches lingering this long for as many teams. I mean, the Patriots have gotten theirs, but the rest of these teams, it is, it's odd because it's now gone a couple weeks. The other thing is, it's weird in today's NFL that they have to announce who's coming.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
So it feels like you're, you know, you're, you're kind of getting paraded through the, the, the, the, the facility. But are you, what do you think about the openings out there? Do you, do, I mean, do you think these teams are like, why do you think they're all waiting so, so long?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, I think, I think a part of it is they're waiting for the seasons to end. For some of the guys, they, they want I think Ben Johnson has been a big factor. Aaron Glenn, maybe in Detroit. So we'll see how quickly these searches speed up. It's. It's like a weird dating show or something, man. Like, it's just, you know, like, rule. I don't.
Matt Jones
Is it a rule you have to.
Myron Metcalf
Announce who they have to announce?
Matt Jones
They have to announce it publicly, though.
Myron Metcalf
I think that's a part. I think that's a. I mean, everyone's doing it, but.
Matt Jones
But it didn't used to be like that.
Myron Metcalf
No.
Matt Jones
It must have changed it in the last year or two, because I don't remember ever seeing the. We've talked to Myron Metcalf.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And now he's left, and you're like, it's almost kind of. I don't say it's embarrassing for them, but it's weird. It's just weird to me.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, for the coaches, it's probably good to get your name out there, but we all know who's a serious candidate and who is not. I think that's the challenge. Like, Ben Johnson's gonna get a job. Clearly, Aaron Glenn's going to get a job. But there are a bunch of other candidates where you're like, wait, you're interviewing that dude? Like, come on. We all know that he's not going to get a job.
Matt Jones
By the way, according to Kurt, Courtney Cronin interviewed Eddie George today. I mean, this is amazing. That is the 17th coach the Bears have interviewed. They've interviewed seven team coaches.
Myron Metcalf
I don't like what the Patriots did with the Rudy rule. I hate the Rooney rule. But, you know, I don't like the idea of, like, bringing in a couple black coaches and being like, all right, we did it. Now we're gonna hire the person we really want. But it feels like the Bears are kind of overdoing the Rooney rule a little bit, you know, and, you know, Ryan Post, Kevin Warren are both black. So this feels a little bit like when I would go to the club and, like, one of my rich friends would get a couple bottles and we invited 10 extra people a little bit. You know what I mean? You know, a little bit of that. It's a little VIP section.
Matt Jones
The idea of the Rooney. I get it.
Myron Metcalf
It doesn't make sense, though, in the, in this league, though. It, it doesn't to me, at the end of the day, it doesn't change who's a serious kid.
Matt Jones
I, I, I sort of agree with you on that. I, but I, I mean, I can get the premise of it. I do Think, though, that Eddie George.
Myron Metcalf
Being invited to the Bears is not. It's not the. It's not the Rooney or the rule. Like, that's not.
Matt Jones
We.
Myron Metcalf
Come on, we all know Eddie George ain't getting that job. And I'm happy for Eddie George, who's been a great college coach. But, like, when you bring in David Shaw and you bring in Eddie George and you bring in these dudes that everybody knows is not going to get this job, that, to me, is when it's the other way hurting you, because you're not being serious about the people coming into that.
Matt Jones
When I was coming out of law school and you interview with law firms, you could tell when they wanted you and when they didn't by which lawyers they had show you around. Like, if they had a dude show me around that himself had only been there a month and a half, I knew, well, this place, I'm not at the top of their list. Right?
Myron Metcalf
Like, these dudes, these brothers ain't leaving the hotel. They're on Zoom. They are on Zoom at the hotel because the Bears bring them to the facility. Something came up. We gotta do your interview via FaceTime. Eddie, enjoy the meal. You know, do whatever you want with room service. Use that gift certificate to that spot downtown. Enjoy it. But we all know that these aren't serious candidates.
Matt Jones
I, like, something came up. Now. The Bears. All right, so the Bears reached out to Mike McCarthy. Yeah. And now you talk about the Mike Tomlin thing getting out. What do you think about. So the teams apparently do not have to make these interviews public. The Bears are making everything. Yeah, the Bears are literally on Tinder, swiping for coaches. Yes and no.
Myron Metcalf
That's how it feels.
Matt Jones
Do you think they're going a little over the top? I mean, they've now been denied by the Cowboys and the Steelers, even though the Cowboys later fired their coach.
Myron Metcalf
But. But, but that's my thing. If I were a serious candidate for the Bears job, I would wonder, like, does this front office know what it wants?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Because why are you interviewing so many people? Because they're all different. They are interviewing former coaches, college coaches, coordinators. It's like, what do you ultimately want? And Ryan Poles, you know, his whole leader of men thing. I would feel uncomfortable as a serious candidate if I knew they were reaching out to all these other folks. Because that part's not clear. The criteria is not clear.
Matt Jones
So tell me if you were. Let me go over a couple of.
Myron Metcalf
These teams, I would take those free dinners, though. I tell you so you would go oh, all day. Yeah. Put me on the plane. I'm going there.
Matt Jones
I did that. You'd be like, myron, I'm the guy you can interview to make the rule go okay.
Myron Metcalf
I don't like it. But that five star dinner is a five star dinner.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Even if it's in Jacksonville, you're still going.
Myron Metcalf
All right, so depending on where the hotel is, but that's all right.
Matt Jones
So let's go through. Who would you hire if you were these teams, if you were the Bears, who would you hire?
Myron Metcalf
I would hire Ben Johnson, but no, I'll tell you what. No, no, let me. I would. I think Ben Johnson is probably going to end up being the guy.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
But I also wonder. Crazy world. I know. I don't know. People putting this out there. Does tomorrow have any impact on where they go? Well, one of the guys who play in the national championship game get a show.
Matt Jones
I thought you meant tomorrow like the inauguration. I was like, you want him to. I was like, you want him to hire Ted Cruz? What are you talking about?
Myron Metcalf
I really had no idea what you were going. I was like, why do you think? I just.
Matt Jones
I just. I couldn't figure out why to ball tomorrow was gonna have anything to do.
Myron Metcalf
Hold on a second. I was looking at Matt. I was looking at Matt and I said, tomorrow. I said, tomorrow. And I can see the wheels turning. And we were talking about two completely different things. No, Marcus Freeman, right. If I'm the Bears.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you can't do that. You can't do that because there's too much at stake with Caleb Williams. You cannot screw up Caleb Williams. You don't get guys like this much.
Myron Metcalf
But why is it screwing them up? What do you mean?
Matt Jones
Because you gotta take the offensive coordinator. That will give him the best chance of success. I agree with you. I'm good with Mark. But first of all, the college coach thing rarely works. But even if it works, I would do Marcus Freeman if I'm one of these other teams. If you're the Bears, you gotta take the offensive coordinator. You have to. Let me quickly ask you, Cowboys, would you. Would you take Dion?
Myron Metcalf
I take Dion.
Matt Jones
You would take dm?
Myron Metcalf
Well, because what else do you do? I mean, nothing's really going to work. You might as well have fun, you know? I mean, like, I don't.
Matt Jones
So you're like Jerry Jones, he went on land, man. He got all this, like, he got all this praise like, Jerry, you're 85 years old, man. You're in your bag. Just take Dion and have fun.
Myron Metcalf
Go do it, man. Go. Go enjoy your life.
Matt Jones
Dion would go to the Cowboys and coach in the NFL but not have his son involved.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah. I think if the Cowboys call, he'll take the job. If the Cowboys want him, he's you.
Matt Jones
Okay, so you would do it. Like, leave aside the kind of joking. Have fun. You. If you were the owner and you're, you're sitting there with Jerry Jones and he's looking at you with all his face filler in and he says, myron, what would you do? You'd say hire Dion.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, but I mean, I don't know that anything will necessarily work. So try something else, I guess. I don't know.
Matt Jones
That's amazing. Well, we know where you stand. My man is anti Rooney rule pro deal coming up next.
Myron Metcalf
By the way, the Bears just called me, so I guess I'm interviewing.
Matt Jones
Coming up next, I didn't know what you were waiting for tomorrow, but you were waiting for the national championship. Will it be a competitive game? That's right next here on ESPN Radio and ESPN App. Hey, it's your resident super bowl champ Chris Cannon coming on Monday. Will he finally eat the chili and pay off his bet? Same Old Lions: A Detailed Summary of "Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron"
Episode: Hour 1: Same Old Lions
Release Date: January 19, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf (ESPN Radio)
The episode begins with Matt Jones greeting listeners amidst a snowy Kentucky morning, setting the stage for a deep dive into this year's NFL playoffs. Despite the weather, the hosts are enthusiastic about unpacking the events of what Matt refers to as "part two today of what some say is the best football weekend of the year" (00:34).
Early in the conversation, Matt and Myron touch upon the Australian Open. Myron admits to catching some matches, despite not being a tennis aficionado, leading to a humorous back-and-forth about a supposed upset that Matt challenges as inaccurate (02:10 – 11:15). This segment highlights the hosts' playful dynamic and sets a lighthearted tone before delving into more serious sports analysis.
Game Breakdown and Key Moments
The primary focus of the episode is the Detroit Lions' unexpected loss in the NFL playoffs. Matt provides a comprehensive overview:
Final Score and Turnovers: The Lions, boasting the number one seed, were defeated by the Washington Commanders with a score of 45-31. Two interceptions by Lions' quarterback Jared Goff in the first half were crucial in sealing their fate (04:20).
Impact of Teddy Bridgewater's Appearance: Myron humorously critiques Goff's performance, likening it to a "high school coach" cameo and reflecting on Bridgewater's surprising entry into the game (04:25).
Emotional Toll and Fan Sentiment
Matt expresses empathy for Detroit fans, likening the playoff disappointment to the pain felt by fans of other teams when high expectations are unmet. He recounts personal experiences as a Kentucky fan to illustrate the profound sense of unfulfillment that accompanies such losses (05:03 – 07:51).
Future Implications for Detroit
The discussion shifts to the future of the Lions:
Coaching Concerns: With coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn potentially seeking new opportunities, Matt and Myron debate the impact of their departure. Myron confidently states, "Ben will still get a job and Aaron Glenn will too" (06:40), suggesting their reputations remain intact despite the playoff setback.
Long-Term Team Prospects: The loss may signify that Detroit won't have another playoff opportunity under head coach Dan Campbell, raising concerns about sustained success and fan trust moving forward (07:13).
Current Coaching Openings
Transitioning from team performances, Matt and Myron explore the current state of NFL coaching searches:
Bears' Extensive Hiring Process
A significant portion of the discussion critiques the Chicago Bears' exhaustive and seemingly unfocused search for a new head coach:
Excessive Interviews: Myron likens the Bears' process to a "dating show," expressing skepticism about the sincerity and effectiveness of interviewing such a wide array of candidates, including college coaches like Eddie George (36:35 – 38:41).
Rooney Rule Criticism: The hosts criticize the Bears for overcomplying with the Rooney Rule, suggesting that it leads to insincere interviews with candidates who are unlikely to secure the position. Myron compares it to "bringing in a couple of black coaches and being like, okay, we did it" without genuine intent (37:03 – 38:41).
Potential Hires and Likelihood of Success
When discussing potential hires, Myron humorously suggests that the Bears might end up hiring Dion from the Cowboys, emphasizing the lack of serious candidates available (41:17 – 43:46). The conversation underscores frustrations with the current coaching hiring landscape, highlighting a perceived lack of clarity and purpose among teams' search strategies.
Game Significance and Anticipation
The episode shifts focus to the upcoming playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills, described as potentially "the best game of the playoffs" (25:42). The hosts express excitement about the matchup, praising the teams' styles and the pivotal roles of their star quarterbacks.
Quarterback Showdown: Lamar Jackson vs. Josh Allen
A central theme of the discussion is the legacy and impact of the league's top quarterbacks:
Lamar Jackson: Recognized for his dynamic playstyle and historical achievements, Myron emphasizes Lamar's unique contributions, stating, "we have to see Lamar and Josh" (29:47). The conversation highlights Lamar's balance of passing and rushing prowess, making him a formidable force on the field.
Josh Allen: Celebrated for his balance and ability to elevate his team's performance, Josh Allen is acknowledged for his resilience despite past playoff disappointments. Myron points out Allen's capability to succeed regardless of supporting cast changes, underscoring his importance to the Bills' success.
Legacy Implications
The outcome of the Ravens vs. Bills game is portrayed as pivotal for determining the legacy of both quarterbacks. Matt asserts, "the loser today, I think that will really be a big deal, that they will have had two shots to steal one when the other team was at their low point" (29:26). This head-to-head is seen as a defining moment that could significantly influence how Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen are remembered in NFL history.
Final Thoughts on Quarterback Legacies
Both hosts agree that this matchup is more than just a game—it's a battle that will cement the legacies of two of the league's most talented quarterbacks. Myron reflects on the broader implications for NFL quarterback rankings, suggesting that a win for either could position them as the generation's premier talent (32:07 – 33:13).
As the episode nears its end, Matt and Myron briefly revisit the NFL's ongoing coaching search and upcoming college bowl games. They maintain their engaging rapport, hinting at future discussions and segments, while continuing to blend humor with insightful sports analysis.
Matt Jones on Detroit's Playoff Loss:
"When you have, when someone has a ridiculously good regular season and then crashes out early in the playoffs... it is one of the more unfulfilling things in sports for a fan base." (05:03)
Myron Medcalf on Quarterback Resilience:
"Ben will still get a job and Aaron Glenn will too." (06:40)
Matt Jones on Quarterbacks' Legacies:
"The loser today, I think that will really be a big deal, that they will have had two shots to steal one when the other team was at their low point, and they won't be able to do it." (29:26)
Myron Medcalf on Playoff Imperatives:
"At the end of the season, there's one happy team. We're going to keep fighting until we are that one team." (23:30)
Matt Jones on Ravens vs Bills Game:
"I don't think these teams are gonna have two more fun teams playing each other style-wise than these two." (25:56)
Myron Medcalf on Bears' Hiring Process:
"It's like a VIP section" (37:03)
In this episode of "Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron," Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf provided listeners with a comprehensive and engaging discussion on the NFL playoffs, the Detroit Lions' heartbreaking exit, the tumultuous coaching search in Chicago, and the highly anticipated Ravens vs. Bills showdown. Through their candid analysis and lively banter, they offered valuable insights into team dynamics, quarterback legacies, and the intricacies of NFL coaching hires, making for a rich and informative listen for sports enthusiasts.
