Myron, yesterday in across sports was a fun day. You had big time college basketball. You had a boxing fight, people got mad at Golden State, lost at Philadelphia, and John Cena turned heel on elimination chamber. I know you were glued to your television for all of that yesterday. What. What was the biggest thing for you?

Didn'T use that phrase. All right, so in college basketball yesterday, you had a lot of other games, probably the biggest ones. Tennessee wins on a buzzer beater to beat Alabama. It was Tennessee's second game winning buzzer beater this season. They beat Illinois earlier the year. And 1. Kentucky loses to Auburn at home, 94, 78. In an absolutely dominant performance by Auburn. Is Auburn the best team in the country? Do you agree? Do you agree with that?

[Ryan Reynolds]

Yes. And there might be a gap between them and everybody else, although Duke is very, very good and obviously have a win over them. So Duke and Auburn, I think, have separated themselves from the pack.

[Matt Jones]

I agree. But I would even say Auburn's a.

Lot better than they are.

I mean. I mean, yesterday's game, I got to see it up close here in Lexington. You know, Broom didn't even play that well, and they still dominated. I mean, they are. They just suffocate you. That's some old dudes. They're strong, you know, like, you can't push them around. I think they're tough to beat. Man, that depth is just going to make them hard to beat during the tournament.

And then St. John's Rick Pitino has come back to the Garden. I mean, what he's done to St. John's is really unbelievable. A team that had not won a Big east title in over 30 years, he shows up, brings out the white suit yesterday, which is hilarious to me. They beat Seton Hall. They've now clinched the outright Big east regular season title for the first time. Since they made the final four in 1985, the Garden is absolutely rocking. It's now as loud, if not louder than Knicks games. Are you shocked at what Ricky P's done?

[Ryan Reynolds]

I mean, surprising that St. John's right? I mean, when people think St. John's they go back to the early 2000s. Run our test teams, man.

[Matt Jones]

No, they go back to Chris Mullen. That's when they go back. They go back to Chris Mullen and Bill Winnington and Walter Berry. I mean, that's where most people's thoughts go.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Yeah, those late 90s, early 2000s teams were good, too. But I mean, Patino, it was never a question about his coaching. It was always the other stuff where with him, I mean, obviously there was stuff at Louisville and.

So now to have a team responding to him, I just wonder if he takes another job at some point. Like, is Patino done? He should say John's.

At the end of the day, he had a great run here in Kentucky, but he's a New York guy and it has got to give him such pride as a New York guy to have filled that garden again for college basketball and to have St. John's I mean, St. John's is like the team of the city right now. Like the whole city is focused on St. John's again. That's pretty unbelievable. We will talk more about college basketball and go on through that. Also, the 49ers are moving on from a star who gets sent to another team, the Commanders. Do you agree with that decision? And then what about their quarterback? So I heard Debo Samuel can be traded. The commanders, I thought, oh, that was interesting. I wonder what they'll get for him. And then it's a fifth round pick. It's like the NFL the value of players. If you ever want to have no self esteem, get traded in the NFL because they'll take, you know, they'll take the best player in the league and be like, yeah, you're worth a second round pick and some cheese. Yeah, it is unbelievable. But Debo, you like the move for Washington?

No, I do. But you're right though, like sometimes you'll see a pretty good player that's like a seventh round conditional pick in 2035 and a loaf of bread. And you're like, well, nobody's worth anything.

In the NFL unless you're a quarterback. You're not worth anything.

Yeah, just keep the pick, man. Just give up the player. It's huge. Right? I know we talked a lot about the Patriots and all the money they have to spend around Drake May, but you know, Washington goes to the offseason with like 90 million plus in cap space, right? And you have Jaden Daniels who looks like a bright young star. Obviously CJ Stroud was in that spot as well. Now is when you build on this rookie deal because we're headed to a place, Matt, where three years from now, when Jaden Daniels gets that next deal, if he continues to play this way, it might be 80 million-plus for a quarterback. So you have to spend now. Go for it. Now I love Washington taking on that mindset. You cannot do the. Well, let's just give them time to grow. If you got something hot right now, go for it.

[Matt Jones]

And I think they all, yeah, I agree with that. I mean, so you look at the cap hit and you say, okay, well is Debo worth that cap hit or not? It's all in some ways relative to the amount of money you have, right? So the fact that they spend nothing on their quarterback during a rookie deal allows them to do a deal like this. Like I don't think if Jaden Daniels had already signed his next deal. You can't do this one, Myron, just from a math.

So the fact that you have a.

[Matt Jones]

Great quarterback on a rookie deal allows you to do something like this. That's why I always think it's important when you're judging whether or not a free agent Signing makes sense in any sport. Ask yourself the cap money situation, because the commanders have two years where they can go do things like this and other teams, other teams cannot. And so. You're exactly right, Myron. You go do it. Will Debo be like, you know, the thing that gets him over the hump? I don't know. But he's got a chance to be something important and yes. Does it end up with a little overpay?

[Ryan Reynolds]

Sure.

But they're the one team that can do it because they've got all this extra money to spend.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Yeah, gotta get better right now. I mean, you gotta see what you have. Obviously, Debo was kind of hit and miss last year with San Francisco, but now you give a bright young quarterback another target, which is what you want. Man. The challenge is in the NFL and this is going to happen with Brock Purdy. You kind of have to pay a good quarterback. That second deal. I mean, you don't give him money unless you're just convinced there's no future and you let him walk like a Justin Fields. But if you think you have a good quarterback and get you to the playoffs, you're going to pay top dollar. The problem is once you get that kind of money, the responsibility on that quarterback grows your quarterback. Quarterbacks be very, very good in order to get you into the playoffs. And I think that's why this rookie deal situation is so important for Washington. Keep adding players, try to win a ring under his rookie deal because once he gets real money, it will be impossible to build this way in the future.

So I'll tell you what, I'll bring hummus. Lakers last night won the battle of LA106, 102 over the Clippers. They've now won 15 of their last 18 games. Luca had 31, he's the fourth. That's an interesting stat. Fourth Laker of all time to score 30 points on his birthday. That's nice to see. And LeBron had 28. That's since Luca has come six straight 25 point games for the 40 year olds. Pretty amazing actually. They are now third in the West. They were at one time as low as seventh, now they're third. Are the Lakers like an actual contender now or is it just like a partial contender or just a fun story?

[Ryan Reynolds]

They're a contender. But I mean Luka, if you watch the games, man, and I watched the other night when they played Minnesota, he has already taken over this team. I think the one thing about Luca, Matt, is when Luka's on your team, it really doesn't matter who else is on the team. It's Luca squad. And I think that's what you're starting to see with the way they space the floor and all the great things they do. Are they better than okc? No. Are they better than Memphis? No. Are they better than Denver? No. But it's a lot more interesting than it was before his arrival. At the end of the day, you still gotta go seven games with those teams and these teams have been great for 60 plus games and Luca just got there and we're kind of judging this small snapshot, but I want to see if they can do it in the playoffs. A 40 year old is going to feel it a lot more in that situation. They're intriguing to me, they're interesting, but they're not a top three team in the west yet.

[Matt Jones]

For me that not a top three team.

[Ryan Reynolds]

So who not a top three.

[Matt Jones]

If it's a one on one series, Lakers versus a team in the west, who is it you're you're picking over the Lakers in a one on one series.

[Ryan Reynolds]

I'm picking all the teams above them in the standings in the West.

Oklahoma City.

Yeah.

And then you're picking Denver.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Picking Denver. I think, I think I'd pick Memphis even though I know they're both ten and a half games back right now. You got to deal with young lads.

Three. Are you putting? Are you putting? Well, Dallas ahead of Anthony Davis is healthy.

[Ryan Reynolds]

No, no. And even Houston, Houston's interesting. The challenge for me is going to be you dealing with a bunch of young teams over a seven game series. How does LA handle that? Luca was out for a month. It's still not in 100% shape. LeBron's 40. What would that. But he's look like.

[Matt Jones]

But he's still good. That's what's amazing.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Very, very good.

[Matt Jones]

I understand Dallas's point about what he might be in the future, but right now he's really good. Brian Windhorst made the point that I actually will make about the Lakers, which is for me it's all about if this team could play defense because they actually have a team of poor defenders. Brian said this on Get Up. I totally agree with everything Brian just said. There is a part of me that wonders when it comes to the defensive part, if it's like the, the triple A guy with a hundred miles an hour stuff who comes to the majors in the first seven or eight games he plays, he's unhittable. Right. Like Kerry would back in the day. But then all of a sudden everybody gets tape on him. They start to get his mannerisms and then you have to see if he's actually a really good pitcher or not. I think we'll see that this year with Paul Skeens. Right. For Pittsburgh and I think we'll see. The answer is yes. But I do want. But if they were to play defense like they play now, forget it. I mean like if they're the number one defense in the league and then they have Luke and LeBron then like aren't they the title favorite?

[Ryan Reynolds]

If that's the case, yeah, we gotta get. We do this in sports. I don't know why we continue to do it. We take these small snapshots and we make these grand declarations.

[Matt Jones]

Totally.

[Ryan Reynolds]

And I honestly think it is offensive to, to okc.

[Matt Jones]

Offensive, wow.

[Ryan Reynolds]

I think it is. Honestly it's offensive because you are talking about teams that have done this since November who have been really, really good. I mean OKC has a nine and a half game lead in the west over Denver right now and they haven't even been healthy for 100% of the season. Like Shay Gilders. Alexander is going to win MVP as he should. You can't watch that team and go, oh, that's going to be an easy out for, for LA in the playoffs. So I think it is fascinating what LA has done but to do that in the playoffs, to sustain this level, is hard. Now, Luca took Dallas to the finals last year. We know how good he is, we know how good LeBron is. But doing that over the course of a playoff run will be more difficult than I think people will.

[Matt Jones]

Yeah, I think you can't. Oklahoma City is the most talented team. They're the best team. They've been the best team all year. They also haven't won anything yet. Right. So there is a sense in which people can say even about Denver, well, I've seen them do it. About LeBron, I've seen him do it. About Luca, I've seen him do it. And we haven't seen Oklahoma City do it yet. This is the year it probably should happen. And we'll see if it does. I am amazed about the defensive stats. If you had when they made this, this trade, if you had told me that there would even be a game, Myron, where they would leave the league in defense, I wouldn't have imagined it. I thought this was like an astounding mix of horrible defenders to put on one team. And it hasn't played like that. So you do have to give credit to whether it's JJ Redick or just the effort. What has happened so far?

[Ryan Reynolds]

No, yeah, it has been impressive, but impressive as anything would be if you added a top five player to your team. Like the Luca stuff doesn't surprise me. He has always been that good.

[Matt Jones]

He's always been.

I think there was just this weird moment where people were like, oh, there's off the court stuff. Maybe he's not as good as people think. This guy was 5 time all NBA first team by age 25. What are we talking about? He signed with Real Madrid when he was 13 years old. Like anyone who decided he wasn't a top five player, that's on them. So that part hasn't been surprising to me at all.

He and the Rock are going to basically be the lead bad guys in the wwe. This seemed to upset you last night, Myron. You didn't want John Cena, former OVW Superstar, to be a. To be a heel.

Don't think it's good for his legacy, man. I mean, John Cena is viewed as one of the real good guys beyond wrestling. I know he's an actor and all these other things, but, you know, his make a wish stuff and then this is sort of at the end of his career. So I can understand wanting to try something for the first time, but I don't think you do that now. Like, that part doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, the timing of it. And oh, by the way, Matt, did they just have, like, a meeting with Cody Rhodes every six months where they're like, listen, we're going to build you up to be one of the biggest things in wrestling, and then we're going to bring back a legend who's just going to take it all away from you. It feels like that's kind of his storyline.

I can't think of a way to make the Giants less appealing than if you also added Aaron Rodgers. They had a terrible off season that basically ended Hard Knocks off season. Instead, it's going to go to college football. Saquon Barkley goes and wins the Super Bowl. They bring everybody back, and now they're not really going to bring in Aaron Rodgers, are they? Myron? That would be such a disaster.

[Ryan Reynolds]

I mean, what else are they going to do? I mean they.

[Matt Jones]

Anything.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Here's what I wonder though. I wonder if that Hard Knocks series hurt them because of the way they were treating Saquon because of the way they talked about Daniel Jones. Obviously Saquon goes on to win a Super Bowl. Daniel Jones now in Minnesota. But I do think it's a thing when you hear front office dudes, you know, being that critical of star players. Even if, even if it's got like Daniel Jones, you're like, he doesn't, he shouldn't be here. We got to move on. I think that hurt the Giants in terms of how appealing they will be to free agents. And I think that's how you end up having to consider Aaron Rodgers at 40 plus years old. Because there aren't a lot of guys.

Who are going to want to say like when your reputation is so bad and it's in the toilet, that's when you have to go find somebody whose reputation is just as low as yours to come join you. Is that sort of what you're saying?

[Ryan Reynolds]

Then that's when you got to go look in the toilet, you know, Because I think that's what you find though.

[Matt Jones]

They're going to have the national anthem some by Kanye. Like what is their goal? I mean, I don't know. Tony Hitchcliffe going to be the new pr. The announcer? I mean it could be. It could be.

[Ryan Reynolds]

The problem is it also shows you how bad the quarterback market is right now. All these San Francisco, all these people talking about Brock Purdy, they're never going to pay him. Have you looked around the NFL right now? Who else are you going to pay to play quarterback? Of course they're gonna be somebody.

[Matt Jones]

Why don't they draft someone and then bring to just.

[Ryan Reynolds]

Shador is not even a starter in this league. Cam Ward's not gonna start in this league. He's not a starter in this league.

[Matt Jones]

Sanders not right enough in the NFL.

[Ryan Reynolds]

He's a second round pick in a good draft for quarterbacks.

[Matt Jones]

He's the second or third round pick in a good draft of quarterbacks. Take the name away. I mean, take the name away. What do you have?
