Is there a more famous locker room speech than how about them cowboys? Like, is there a more. Is there a more famous locker room moment than that? 888 say yes spin. I'm welcome to suggestion. 888 say yes to. But every time I do this show, I hear him go, you know, we get the pit bull dude. And then you hear him go, how about them cowboys? And, man, that's gotta be the most famous sound from a coach ever, right? Can you think of one more famous? Well, ever.
Amber
I don't know. Well, not ever.
Ian
Give me one. Give me a. I mean.
Amber
Lombardi. Lombardi. Everett Sound ever famous.
Ian
What did Lombardi say? What did he say that was so.
Amber
Much more famous, that famous speech he did.
Ian
Well, what was it?
Amber
If it's so famous, what was it he did? The thing. Men, you know, he said something like, men, we gotta do. He said, men, we gotta win. You know, whatever he said.
Ian
I don't remember that speech. Men, we gotta win.
Amber
That was a. Lombardi had one. I mean, and then. And then, like, some of the viral moments, like.
Ian
I'll give you one, Although we don't have it on film or on recording. Win one for the Gipper, right? That was Newt Rockney.
Amber
Newt Rockney.
Ian
But that. We don't have that on film. I think Win for the men or whatever it is you said is not. That's not as famous as you remember. Win for the men. Don't change. Don't change.
Amber
I didn't say win for the men.
Ian
What did you say?
Amber
You make it up stuff. But Lombardi had one. He had a big one. But then some of the more viral ones, like playoffs. Playoffs.
Ian
Okay, playoffs. But that's. That's not a locker room one, by the way.
Amber
What did Lombardi say?
Dario Melendez
Not a locker room. But Lombardi's famous quote that he's credited for is, winning isn't everything, it seems.
Ian
Only thing but did he say okay.
Amber
I knew it was.
Ian
I remember that one. Did he say that in the locker room?
Dario Melendez
I don't know exactly where he said that one.
Ian
I'm just going to say unless 888 say ESPN, unless any of you convince me otherwise, I'm going to say how about them Cowboys Is the most famous locker room thing ever said by coach and I'm willing to be proven wrong. I don't think it is win for the men like Myron said, but I think it is.
Amber
I just say, man, don't let somebody turn on the radio and think I'm out here saying win for the men. And then, and then that just sounds.
Ian
And that you quote Marty said, how about them cowboys? Unless888 say ESPN, I'm glad to be proven wrong. Unless somebody would like to say otherwise, I'm going to say that's the the most famous. Now Shams has just reported that the Knicks are going to do a second interview with Mike Brown and that the he is the favorite for the job. Is it really the case that the Knicks coming off the Eastern Conference finals are going to fire Tom Thibodeau and end up with Mike Brown coaching his 800th NBA team?
Amber
It sounds like it, you know, and I don't think anyone understands it. It's just odd. I mean, I don't see how that's an upgrade from Tibbs. I mean they tried to get a bunch of coaches and teams said no, you can't interview him. But I don't know how Mike Brown is an upgrade on anything. I mean he got fired by the Kings this year after starting 13 and 18.
Ian
And I know how did that get the locker room inside you end up with Mike Brown. Well, I'll tell you who would be an upgrade. One of the smartest. No, I'm just kidding. I wouldn't want to make my mad. Dario Melendez W isn't 12 News sports director in Milwaukee going to give us a little update about how things are in Milwaukee with Giannis? Dario, I'll start with this with the news. Today I had two emotions. I hear Miles Turner signing. I'm like, Milwaukee's got to be thrilled. Then we hear they wave or Damian Lillard and then Giannis starts making cryptic tweets. So where is the city of Milwaukee emotion wise right now when it comes.
Myron Metcalf
To the basketball team, I think Milwaukee's really excited. And the whole Giannis, you gotta remember when, when Jason Kidd was fired, Giannis, he put out there that he wasn't happy either. If there's one thing Giannis is gonna be really good at post basketball is being a politician. Because he doesn't ever want to make anybody feel like they were on the outside. He always wants to make people feel happy. I think he is really excited about this team is going to be like and look like he obviously was out there recruiting Miles Turner. It was one of the guys that I had been kind of banging the drum for here in Milwaukee because he'd be a perfect fit with Lopez left, which he did leave, would also kind of take the Pacers down a peg as well. So not only do you make yourself better, you obviously to make another contender in the East a little worse, but when you look at this Bucs roster, and I don't think John Horst is done by the slightest because you still need to address a starting point guard. I don't know if Porter is going to be that guy for the Bucks, but the fans here are pretty excited about what happened today.
Amber
Dario. I'm from Milwaukee, actually just left Milwaukee on Sunday. My parents 50th anniversary party was there and when I was there, everyone was asking me the same question. Is Giannis leaving? Is Giannis leaving? Do you feel like the moves today and the fact that Giannis didn't demand a trade, does that end the speculation or could we still hear rumblings from folks in the future?
Myron Metcalf
So I'm going to be as nice about this as possible. I used to work at espn. I did Sports center for a number of years. I understand the national narrative there is. Giannis has never once made it seem like he wanted to leave Milwaukee. I've known him, I used to be on the Bucs broadcast. I've got to know him pretty well. He is very happy here. His only caveat has always been, as long as the Bucks are going to put a contending team on the court and be committed as an ownership group to winning, then he's fine. And the Bucs, year in and year out, getting Jrue Holiday and trading away their draft capital, getting Damian Lillard, I'm making this Miles Turner deal. They have proven time and time again that they're committed to winning. And if you look at the Eastern Conference landscape, I mean, I don't see why the Bucs wouldn't be one of the top contenders to come out of the East. So from the local media perspective and the team that the media that's been around Giannis for a number of years, it's all noise outside. I mean, Milwaukee is where Giannis wants to be. He has kind of made that clear over and over again. The only thing he has also made clear is that he wants to be on a team that is committed to winning, and the Bucs and John Horse and the ownership group has pretty much committed to that, too.
Ian
Well, that's interesting to see. I mean, we're talking to Daryl Melendez, esp. Or excuse me, WISN 12 News sports director, Milwaukee I that is interesting because you do if you're not in Milwaukee like I am, you do sort of say is is he happy? But I'm glad to hear he is because I think Giannis Bean Milwaukee is a great story. So let's then put it like this. You don't have Damian Lillard. He was going to be hurt anyway. But now you have Myles Turner and you've got the roster that's there now. Do they go add another piece? And if they do, who do you think that could be? And then if they do or don't, can they be a contender in a depleted east next year?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, yeah. I mean, could they be contender right now with this team? Without a doubt. I mean, you'll add some pieces at the trade deadline if need be, or go the way of the buyout market at the trade deadline. I think point guard would probably be the only other position they'd want to fortify a little bit. I mean, you look at who they have in the in the front court with, with Turner now and, and Giannis and Bobby Portis and Jericho Sims, I mean, they're pretty good and athletic and fast. Now, shooting guards maybe is going to be the issue. I mean, you have Gary Trent and AJ Green. Kuzno is most likely going to play the small Ford and he's probably like the wild card, right? If Kyle Kuzma could ever be like the Kyle Kuzma that Magic Johnson was talking about years ago, then this Bucks team is going to be really darn good.
Ian
Haven't we heard that, though? Dario, I've heard people tell me that if I mean, I, I, I love you, but I'm not listening to somebody, I'm not listening to Kyle Kuzma. I mean, I've been hearing that Kyle Kuzma could be for 10 years.
Myron Metcalf
I know Magic Johnson said it, what, 10, 15 years ago? I want to say, like, it feels like forever ago that Kyle Kuzma is going to be the the guys at the lake.
Ian
You can't listen, you got to give people Milwaukee more hope than Kyle Kuzma may that' and Joel Embiid may be healthy. Come on Dario.
Myron Metcalf
Well, would you be okay if Kyle Kuzma is your number four option, you think?
Ian
Maybe. Maybe.
Myron Metcalf
Because at this point, my Kyle Kuzma might be that fourth scorer that the Bucks would have. I mean, if you go Giannis and Miles Turner, I mean, I put Gary Trent Jr. Ahead of him. I put A.J. green ahead of him. I. I might even put Porter ahead of him. Kpj, if Kuzma is your fourth to fifth scorer, I think you're in a good spot. Now. Could you move him and maybe target a guy like Andrew Wiggins? That would be awesome. I mean, John Horst has shown that he can make these moves, but I think point guard is going to be the place the buck need to target. That said, if you remember last year, Giannis was running the point a lot as that point forward, especially when Dame went down. So it wouldn't surprise me if maybe they take a little bit of a untraditional approach to that point guard position, put another shooting guard out there and just let Giannis bring the ball up and facilitate, because when Lulu went down, he was a triple double machine.
Ian
Dario, thank you very much. Dario Melendez, WISN 12 News Sports Director, Milwaukee. I hope for you the happiest of Kyle Kuzma's.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, we'll see how that goes.
Ian
Thank you very much. Appreciate it. All right, I got people on here who are going to dispute me potentially on the how about them cowboys being the best locker room speech. A lot of suggestions, however, I think will be better than Win for the Men, Myron's favorite one. But either way, we'll deal with those and a lot more next here on Amber and Ian.

Sunday morning. Matt Myron on ESPN Radio. How about them Cowboys? And I think, man, that's got to be the most famous sound from a coach ever, right? Can you think of one more famous? Well, ever.
Amber
I don't know. Well, not ever.
Ian
Give me one. Give me a.
Amber
Give me Lombardi. Lombardi Everest. What did he say?
Ian
What did he say that was so much more famous?
Amber
That famous speech he did?
Ian
What was it? Get remind if it's so famous.
Amber
He did the. He did the thing. Men, you know, he said something like men we got to do. He said, men, we got to win. You know, whatever.
Ian
I don't remember that speech. Men we gotta win. That was a famous speech by Vince Lombardi. Men, we gotta win. I'm still gonna go with how about them Cowboys? And it's Amber Ian here on ESPN Radio. Matt Jones Meyer Metcalf filling in. I got people who are gonna try to find one more memorable then how about them Cowboys? I don't think they're going to get that. I do think they'll find one more memorable than men we got to win, which was by my Google search, never once said by Vince Lombardi at any point.
Myron Metcalf
Clo.
Amber
I was close. Chad and North Carolina 60s or something.
Ian
Okay, that doesn't change anything. If he didn't say, it doesn't matter what decade Chad is in North Carolina. Give me a more memorable locker room quote than how about them Cowboys?
Myron Metcalf
All right, this is from Jimmy V. And it's not. It's not his most memorable speech, but he did say, how do you go from where you are to where you want to be?
Ian
Yeah, but that was at the speech. That was at the ESPYs. That's not the same as a locker room. I mean, I'm not comparing. I appreciate the call. I'm not comparing. How about them Cowboys to like, ask not what your country can do for you. I'm comparing it to what happens in a locker room. You can't just give four score in seven years ago. I understand there were better speeches than.
Amber
That, but you left it kind of open initially, though. You left it kind of open and said open to where it was.
Ian
Jimmy V. At the, at the ESPYs. That's not the same thing. I mean, obviously that's one. That's maybe the best sports speech of all time. But I'm Talking about like a coach to a team. Like, let's go win for the men kind of speech, Myron.
Amber
Like, say that, man.
Ian
That's not what I'm looking for. James in New Mexico, do you have one?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I got actually two from Lombardi. Okay, well, Jim Balvano said it in his speech. Lombardi went in and says, ben, there are only three things important to you guys. Your God, your family, and the Green.
Ian
Bay packers and Rutgers basketball. That was in. The.
Myron Metcalf
Second one was quitter.
Ian
That's okay. One's good enough, James. One's good enough. I appreciate the call. One's good because you're right. That's a good one. I don't think we have that on film or on recording, but Jim Bombardo.
Amber
It's hard to come up with Lombardi quotes.
Ian
I think people should just stay away from Lombardi. It's clearly causing some issues for people to remember Teddy in St. Louis. Go ahead, Teddy.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, the only person talking about how about them Cowboys? Might be Michael Irving when they win and Stephen A. Smith when they lose. And I got.
Ian
Okay, that doesn't have anything to do with what we're talking about, Teddy. That's me. No, that is.
Amber
That wasn't the question, man.
Ian
That wasn't the question. The question was not whether or not Michael, Vic and Stephen A. Smith have ever said anything about the Cowboys. Like, what was the response? That was not the question.
Amber
Like the teacher asking, what's two plus two? And you say C, like that's not how it works, man.
Ian
Two plus two, Greece. Let's go to Nick in Alaska. Go ahead, Nick.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, guys, I think I got it for you.
Ian
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
I'm gonna go with the Herb Brooks miracle speech when the US beat the Russians in 1980.
Ian
It's a very good one. Do you remember? Now, wait a minute.
Amber
That's the one I'd like.
Ian
Hang up. Everybody says that's a one. I like the. That's obviously very memorable speech, but can you remember a line as distinct as, how about them Cowboys?
Myron Metcalf
How about, they may beat us nine times out of ten, but not tonight, boys.
Ian
Okay, I'll take it. I'm not. I don't think it's as. I appreciate the call. I'm not gonna put it above how about them Cowboys? But I do like that with Myron. That's a good one. Herb Brooks is 19 8. Now we're. It's a little better than Teddy's Michael Irvin and Stephen A. Smith line.
Amber
I think that's the one, man. Because I think her I think Herb Brooks. I mean, especially around here, that. That definitely is probably the one. And, I mean, there's a whole movie made about what happened there, so that might be the one.
Ian
Okay, let's go. Well, I don't think the movie's kind of more about the win than it is just the speech. But he does.
Amber
Yeah, I know, but it's all attached to.
Ian
Is that Kurt Russell?
Amber
Yeah, the speech. The speech is one of the most memorable moments in the film, though.
Ian
Yeah. No, I agree. Let's go to Jim in Memphis. Go ahead, Jim.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, I've got two for you. The first one is how. How about them Cowboys Is not even close to win one for the Giffer. So let's just start there as a starting point.
Ian
But win one for the Gifford is not recorded. It's not recorded. And some people dispute that it was even said. Like, it's kind of like Casablanca where everybody. Casablanca. Everybody says, what was it? What's the. Well, never mind. Anyway, go ahead.
Myron Metcalf
I like my second one. I love my second one. Even better, though, if you remember a memorable game, the Catholics versus convicts, and little diminutive Lou Holtz made the comment, go fight your men, but save Jimmy Johnson's ass for me. That was fantastic.
Ian
Wait a minute. Did he really say that?
Myron Metcalf
Whoa.
Ian
I think you're making that. I think he made up two quotes. I don't think. I do not believe. Okay, hang on. I need our producers to say, I do not believe Lou Holtz said, get them and save Jimmy Johnson's ass for me. I do not believe that was said.
Amber
Can we say that? Are we allowed to. I don't know what the rules are.
Ian
I mean, we're. I think we're allowed to say it, but I can also say interesting.
Amber
That's an interesting phrase, though.
Ian
Let's try Liam in Kentucky. So far, we have one answer that's on topic. Go ahead.
Amber
No one else is following directions.
Myron Metcalf
I think. I think the most memorable speech I ever heard was my eighth grade year. We were owing 27. That's in the playoffs where coach talked about how many moral victories we had throughout the year. Actually only lost by 20 after losing by 60, and then 40 the third.
Ian
But you didn't tell me what he said.
Amber
What he say?
Myron Metcalf
He talked about how there was a moral. We finished with at least 15 moral victories on the year.
Ian
Y' all were bad. Bad. You. Y' all, man. I appreciate the call. This is not the most. I love Amber and Ian. Got to work on the calls here. We've got to get More on topic to the answers to the question. I need something like how about them Cowboys? No one has any quotes her Brooks so far is the best answer. I would also say Will Forte on Saturday Night Live when he played the music that one time with Nate Manning and dance. Yeah, that's a really good one. Brian in Tennessee. Go ahead, Brian.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, I agree with you that the how about them Cowboys is probably the best. But it wasn't in the locker room. But how about Gundy saying, I'm 40, I'm a man.
Ian
Not in the locker room, but a good quote what I've said a lot. Not in the locker room, but I will say, Myron, I used to quote I'm 40, I'm a man many times in the last few years.
Amber
It wasn't good. It was a joke. Like we laughed at him for saying that. It wasn't like it was a powerful thing. He said.
Ian
Well, if you were adding press conference. You do playoffs. Playoffs, yeah.
Amber
We play to win the game and.
Ian
We play to win the game from our guy Herm.
Amber
That's exactly who we thought they were. Dennis. Dennis Anderson.
Ian
Erickson.
Amber
No, Dennis.
Ian
Dennis Green.
Amber
Dennis Green. Denny Green. Yeah.
Ian
Dave in Oregon. Go ahead, Dave.
Myron Metcalf
Nothing like bringing it back to just win, baby.
Ian
Okay, that. Now that's a good one. That's actually a good one. Just when baby is a good one. I'll put that as the second answer on point. I appreciate the call. Just win, baby. Al Davis. I like it. Ivan in San Francisco. Go ahead. Or Yvonne.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, fellas. Thanks for taking my call. First of all, only a Cowboy fan would agree with that. The best saying, you know.
Ian
Well, give me a better one. Then I gotta say, what's your answer?
Myron Metcalf
Because I'm over here in San Francisco. Who got it better than we do? Nobody.
Ian
Did George Seifert say that? Who said that? Who?
Myron Metcalf
Jim Har. Jim Harbo to r up the troops when he was a Niner coach. Who got it better than we do? Nobody. You know, with the. With the enthusiasm. Of course.
Ian
I don't. I don't remember. I appreciate the call. I appreciate the call. Do you remember that, Myon? Do you ever remember?
Amber
First I remember him saying that, but I don't think anybody like remembers it though.
Ian
Did he say it like that?
Amber
I don't think so.
Ian
I don't either. I think Ivan, a lot of people were lying on these calls. 888 say ESPN, people that listen to direct. I did enjoy it though. Listen, I like taking calls. It's good to hear you all get your blood pumping on some quotes. We might come back to that a little bit later. Well, actually, we are going to take more calls. Good. We'll take a few more calls. Jamie. Jeff. James. Jeff. We'll go to it. And where does Aaron Rodgers rank among AFC quarterbacks? I don't like him.
Amber

Is that that dude we talked to?
Ian
See, this is tough because I. I hate this song with a passion. But we interviewed this guy down in Nashville and we liked him. What was his name? What's his name?
Amber
I can't remember. But he said it changed his life, though.
Ian
What is it?
Dario Melendez
Walker.
Ian
He said he changed his life.
Dario Melendez
You liked him but you can't remember his name?
Amber
Walker Hayes.
Ian
True, because he has two first names, Walker and Hayes. You know what that is?
Dario Melendez
We talked earlier in the show that Myron might have been a little bit jealous that Matt was talking up David Dennis Jr. When they were hosting together. But you know what, Myron? Matt remembers your name, so that's something.
Ian
True.
Dario Melendez
Yeah, there's people he likes that he doesn't remember their name.
Ian
Walker Hayes is a. Walker Hayes is a very good example of a rule that I have. If you don't like someone, don't meet them. Because it makes it very hard because I've always hated that stupid song. Applebee. He's on a date night.
Amber
You sound like Applebee's. It sounds like I just.
Ian
I can't Stand it on day night. You don't like Applebee's, and I can't stand it. But then we met him, and he was really nice. And now when I hear it, I kind of find myself dancing to it. And I'm embarrassed by that, Myron, because. Because, you know, he was nice.
Amber
Well, you don't like Applebee's. Like, that's not. Maybe that's not your. Let me tell you about the Midwest, though. Applebee's is the Waffle House of the Midwest. It's honestly what it is.
Ian
What do you mean? Apple. In a lot of ways, Waffle House is the Waffle House of the Midwest.
Amber
No, but we don't have Waffle Houses up here.
Ian
I've told you, first of all, Minnesota is not the Midwest. You always act like Minnesota more.
Amber
Oh, yeah, but don't. Don't do that. We are the middle. We're the upper Midwest.
Ian
You are the Russ.
Amber
No, we're not. I've never even heard that phrase. We're the upper Midwest. We are the Midwest. I'm from Milwaukee. That's also the Midwest. Chicago's the Midwest.
Ian
The Midwest is Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa.
Amber
That's the Plains down there where we're the upper Midwest. We're the Midwest.
Ian
I don't think so. It is Amber and Ian on ESPN Radio. Matt Jones, Meyer Metcalf doing memorable locker room. You know, it's good July radio. The most memorable locker room speeches. We had Jimmy Johnson.
Amber
This is LeBron, you know.
Ian
Yeah. What do you want me to say? LeBron might get traded, might not. There you go. There's your segment. Now we are talking about most memorable locker room moments. Look, I'm not trying. I'm not trying to be rude. It's just everybody knows, like, you every. You can turn, like, you know, that conversation if there's been some form of that conversation my entire life. Myron, is LeBron happy? Is he not happy? He's gonna be trained. How many times you have that conversation?
Amber
But you are good for saying, I'm not trying to be rude after being rude. I don't know if you understand that you do that.
Ian
It's a conversation that's happened many times. I like this better. How about them Cowboys? Here's a good one. Do you. Do you. Somebody wrote in on the text machine. 772-774-5254. It said, what about when Sam Weiss yelled at the Bengals fans? Do you remember this? It's not really a locker room, but it's kind of like that. The Bengals fans were Throwing snowballs onto the field. Bengals were playing the Browns in Cincinnati. Bengals fans are throwing snowballs onto the field against the Browns. Sam Weiss gets on the microphone and goes, will you all stop? This is Cincinnati, not Cleveland. Which I thought was a great way of lecturing the fans while also putting down your opponent. Myron. I thought that was a great.
Amber
That's a good way to do it. If you. If you can use a moment like that to knock your rival. I respect that.
Ian
Jamie in Irvine. Is that where you are? Jamie in California?
Myron Metcalf
Yes, sir, that's right.
Ian
Okay, what do you got?
Myron Metcalf
Moses malone. When the 76ers won the championship, he said 4, 4, 4.
Amber
Well, now, he didn't say 4, 4, 4. He said foe, foe, foe. That's how he.
Ian
That's what he said, was that. I don't. I'm not familiar. Did he had they won four str. In three series in a row or something? Is that what he said? Why did he say that, Myron? I don't know. I don't know the history of it.
Amber
I think when they won the championship, I don't know.
Ian
But why did he say fo, Fo foe?
Amber
Why did he say, I think maybe they won four games? I don't know. But it wasn't.
Ian
You don't know why he said it?
Amber
No, but it wasn't four. Four, four. I mean, that in some communities it was four, four, four. But he really said foe. Fo, Foe. That's. That's actually what he's.
Ian
Okay, Matthew. Matthew is in Mississippi. Where are you in Mississippi, Matthew?
Myron Metcalf
Little town called senatobia, about 30 minutes south of Memphis.
Ian
Senate.
Amber
Is that near you? All near.
Ian
He does it.
Amber
Jackson area.
Ian
So did you say Senator Tupelo?
Amber
You near Tupelo?
Ian
You know Tupelo, Mississippi? An hour and a half.
Amber
Okay, Mississippi. I was just there. I know Mississippi.
Ian
All right, what do you got, Matthew?
Myron Metcalf
All right, so Dan Lanning, first year, he's got Bo Nix. He's got Kellen Denningham playing Dion Sanders in the Colorado Buffalo, or whatever they're called. And there's all this hype pregame. He says in the locker room, let them talk with their lips. We're going to talk with our pads. They're spot. They're playing for clicks. We're playing for wins.
Ian
I do remember him saying that.
Amber
That was a good one.
Ian
That was a good one. Not quite. How about them Cowboys in terms of history? But I do remember that. And he and them saying, they're playing for clicks. We're playing for wins. My And I do think that was a good line, especially against.
Amber
That was. That was a. That was a really good one. I thought. So Mose Malone back. He said fo. Fo foe. Because they swept the Lakers in the finals that year in 83.
Ian
Okay.
Dario Melendez
And he said they would sweep each round.
Ian
Okay. So he predicted they'd win. Did they do it? Did they sweep? So they.
Dario Melendez
No, actually didn't. And they even updated it to faux5 foe and put it on the. The team's championship rooms that year because.
Amber
They lost a game.
Ian
Oh, they put it on the one wings. Oh, that's kind of an interesting.
Amber
They lost to the Bucks. That was the only game they lost that year. But they swept everybody else.
Ian
See, this is. That's another reason. This is. This is why. This is better than arguing about LeBron. We are teaching people things. I learned for the first time about that. And I did not know Myron.
Amber
Yeah, but he didn't say four.
Ian
Four, Four.
Amber
I mean, that's not what he said. That was.
Ian
I got that part. Jeff is in Florida. Go ahead, Jeff.
Myron Metcalf
We're in Florida from Orlando.
Ian
Orlando. Okay, what do you got?
Myron Metcalf
Okay, so Ed reed and the 2001 season with the Hurricanes against Florida State. We were winning at halftime. He. He talked to the players and he was injured, and he says, I'm hurt, dog. Don't ask me if I'm hurt. I can't repeat everything Joaquin said. Dominating. We ain't doing this. And then goes on. And they go on to win the chip. The whole season and the greatest college football team ever.
Ian
The conversation. I appreciate the call. That's just a conversation. That's not a speech. That's just two people talking to each other. That doesn't. I'm sorry, Jeff, you lose on that one. James is in New Mexico. You are third caller tonight from New Mexico. New Mexico is lit up. What do you got, James?
Myron Metcalf
Yes, the greatest college coach of all time, Dan Gable, wrestling. Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard to find alloy called guts.
Amber
Wow.
Ian
I didn't even know. But that is a strong. Where did he give that speech.
Myron Metcalf
When he played for. When he coached for Iowa? He won 15 national championships in 20 years.
Ian
But he. But he gave the speech at the Olympics, since it's about gold medals.
Myron Metcalf
Well, no, it was to his team. Because you can win gold medals in any. In wrestling, no matter what level you're at.
Ian
Gotcha, gotcha. I got you. All right, well, thank you. I appreciate it. Dan Gable, legendary program At Iowa. Let's finish with this. Rick, where are you in Kansas?
Myron Metcalf
About as far south as you can go. It's called Pittsburgh, home of the Gorillas.
Ian
And it's. I mean, my right is Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh State ends in a G, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yes. Pittsburgh without an H. Home of John Brown. Yes.
Amber
Is that what it is?
Myron Metcalf
Yes. Pittsburgh State. Yes, sir.
Amber
Yeah.
Ian
But it ends in a G. See, we know. We know these towns. All right, what do you got? Pittsburgh without it.
Myron Metcalf
All right, back at the heyday of Oklahoma football, Barry Switzer. All right, boys, let's hang a half a hundred on them and put the backups in.
Amber
I like that.
Ian
I do like that.
Amber
I like that.
Ian
So he said, let's hang a half a hundred on him. And it did. And he said, hunter, too, and then put a. Put the backups in.
Amber
I get jealous of, like, when, you know, country people can say it. Like, half a hundred. I couldn't say half a hundred. You know, it wouldn't sound right, but like. Like, y' all can do that stuff, and that's. I'm jealous.
Ian
Say that again. Will you do that one more time?
Amber
Say half a hundred. I can't say half a hundred. You know, like, y' all said.
Ian
We would say Huntert like H, U N.
Amber
E R T. But I sound ridiculous when I try to say it. But I'm jealous that you could say stuff like that because that's a lot better than 50. You say 50, that's a different thing.
Ian
Before we. Before we go back, before we go to break, just do me a favor, because it's been a while since you've done this for me. Say the word Louisville.
Amber
Love.
Ian
Louisville.
Amber
Lava Love.
Ian
My man cannot say the name of the largest city in Kentucky for the life of him. Now we are highlighting sports in on ESPN. 50 states, 50 days. Today, the day we are highlighting Alabama, we will talk about Alabama, the state, the Tide. Roll Tide, and everything you need to know about Alabama. That's next here on Amber and Ian.
Amber
This is the Amber and Ian podcast.
Ian
Have you ever spotted McDonald's hot crispy fries right as they're being scooped into the carton? And time just stands still.
Dario Melendez
In 1979, the first words spoken on ESPN weren't just an announcement. If you're a fan, they were a sports prophecy.
Amber
What you'll see in the next minutes, hours and days to follow.
Ian
Glad you're with us tonight.
Amber
May convince you you've gone to sports heaven. And right now, you're standing on the.
Ian
Edge of tomorrow, this fall, the next.
Dario Melendez
Era of ESPN begins sports forever.
Amber
SportsCenter. 50 states in 50 days. We going coast, coast. We going coast on ESPN radio.
Ian
Yes, it is. 50 states in 50 days. Sports center is going to all of them. If you want to talk about a promo that ESPN has done. Sometimes I give ESPN a hard time about the things they do. 50 States in 50 Days is my favorite. I wish I could go to every one of them. They did go to Alaska last night. In Alabama tonight, somebody needs to get everybody a map because that's not close to each other. But nevertheless, we are in Alabama today. And Myron. It's Matt. Myron. And we are filling in for Amber and Ian. I'm going to tell you some facts about the state of Alabama. Roll Tide, you ready to go? The capital of Alabama is Montgomery. You ever been to Montgomery?
Amber
Yes, I've been to Montgomery.
Ian
Yes. Lot of great history there. Civil Rights museum is there. The. I'll tell you, missing that first with me. Well, because it's great. It's like next to the figured. I've been there.
Myron Metcalf
Huh?
Amber
Well, I have been there.
Ian
I didn't say you had been there. I'm just saying, like, it's a great museum. There's also, all seriousness, a museum that a lot of people don't know exists. That civil rights museum is like, awesome. I was just there about a year and a half ago. It really is awesome. Population 5.1 million. Do you know what the nickname. Don't look at the screen. Do you know what the nickname of Alabama is? And I'll give you a hint. It's part of the cheer that the Alabama Crimson Tide do.
Amber
Crimson City.
Ian
No, that's good guess. The Crimson City is not the state nickname. It is Yellow Hammer. It's the Yellow Hammer State. If you've ever been to an Alabama game, when they see their little fight song, then they go, Rammer Jammer. Yellow Hammer. Did you know that?
Amber
Okay, I haven't been. I haven't. I haven't been to Alabama game. Okay. I've been a basketball game.
Ian
That is a weird thing, by the way, about Southern SEC schools. They all have. When they finish their song, they all have little chance.
Amber
Yeah.
Ian
Like, oh, yeah. And so theirs is Rammer Jammer. Yellow Hammer.
Amber
Hammer. Okay.
Ian
They were. Their motto is. Alabama State motto is we dare to.
Amber
Sell the state as part of this. Like, what's the point?
Ian
Let me just say I find this motto a little ironic for Alabama. And so I'm just gonna say it. Move on. Alabama's motto is we dare to defend our rights. You know, What? We'll just move on to the next one. The state might want to update that. Alabama state food. The state food is a lane cake. What is a lane cake?
Amber
A lane cake.
Ian
I don't know what a lane cake is.
Amber
That's a lane cake.
Ian
Rachel, Terry, look up, see what a lane cake is because I've never heard of that.
Dario Melendez
All right. A quick Google search says, because I was asking the same question. A bourbon laced bake cake, traditional in the American South.
Myron Metcalf
Wow.
Ian
See? I mean, you've never heard of a lane. Yeah, I mean, Kentucky suburban state. I've never heard of a lane cake. So maybe I have to try that sometime. In 1836, Alabama was the first state, the first state to declare Christmas a holiday. Christmas was not a holiday in America until the good people of Alabama started recognizing Christmas. I would have thought it was been a lot before that. That surprise.
Amber
You think everybody got gifts?
Ian
Probably not everybody. Alabama. How about this? 43% of all snails in the United States live in Alabama.
Amber
How does someone know that?
Ian
That's a good question. I don't know how they know that.
Amber
How does someone calculate that?
Ian
What? That's real.
Amber
That feels impossible to me.
Ian
That's a lot of snails. 43% of all snails are in the Alabama.
Amber
Who would know that? Like, how would you. How would you know how many snails are in Alabama versus another state?
Ian
That's.
Amber
That feels made up. Man. We got to stop these scientists. They just throw numbers out there, man. They don't. They're not doing research.
Myron Metcalf
All right.
Amber
They're not doing it.
Ian
All right, thank you, RFK. Now, the first 911 call in the United States. The first 911 call in the United States happened in Alabama. How about that first 911 call ever in Alabama. That's a good fact. Now here's another.
Dario Melendez
Wait, I gotta follow up on the 911 call. Do you guys know what the first 911 call was.
Amber
Like? What happened, you mean?
Ian
Yeah, I don't know what happened. That's a good.
Dario Melendez
So it was. It was just a couple like politicians testing out 91 1. So it wasn't like a real emergency. It was just like one politician called.
Ian
I thought somebody had a cat on the.
Dario Melendez
Was just like, hi, how are you? This works well, somebody else was trying.
Amber
To get through at that moment for a real emergency. And they're over here doing this ceremonial call.
Ian
Yeah, I know.
Amber
My house is on fire. Can somebody hang up so you can.
Ian
Get to the real people? Here's another great one. And I knew this But I'd forgotten it because I drove by this place once. In Scottsboro, Alabama. Myron is the unclaimed baggage center. When your luggage is lost from airlines, it is sent to Scottsboro, Alabama, where it then has to stay there, I believe two years. I think they have to keep it there for two years and then if it's never claimed, they can sell the items that are left after. I think it's two years, might be a little longer. And I believe I could be wrong about this, but I think you can go to the place and buy people's old luggage stuff from Lost Air Airlines.
Amber
There's an entire culture around it. Like, you know, there are these people who go to storage facilities and they buy like these storage lockers or whatever. There's a culture of people who do this with unclaimed baggage. There's actually a TV show. There's a TV show, yes. They go to Scottsboro, Alabama. They like throw out the luggage. Like on a Saturday, they throw it out, just bid on the lug. Like they'll open the luggage.
Ian
Oh, it's like you don't like storage facilities. They like stores.
Amber
You don't know what's in it. You don't know what's in it. So you're just buying it based on what you think could be in it. But it's a whole thing. There's a whole culture around unclaimed baggage sales.
Ian
Well, I've driven people who do. I've driven past the facility. It has a lot of signs. I know when it leads up to it, people do it in Scottsboro, Alabama. Now, the we were there ESPN Sports center for the World Police and Fire Games. That's in Birmingham. It's an Olympic style competition where athletes who represent first responders from different countries compete. And they compete. It's everything from fire, firemen and women to corrections, probation, law enforcement. And they have all kinds of games, 60 plus sports. It is the Olympics for world police and fire and first responders. And that is taking place. Myron, currently in Alabama.
Amber
Oh, wow. All around the world.
Ian
You said all around the world. They come to Alabama and they compete to see who the, the, you know, best at various sports of first responders are. So that's kind of nice. Now, when I say Alabama sports to you, Myron, what comes to mind?
Amber
Only Alabama football. I mean, clearly, right?
Ian
Yeah. I mean, Alabama, the Crimson Tide, Bear Bryant, Right. Nick Saban.
Amber
I mean, you know, how many teams have two of the greatest? I mean, are those two of the top four greatest coaches of all time? You know, who coach the same school. So.
Ian
No, I mean, they're without question. If you were to list the five best college coaches, two of them came from. From Alabama. I mean, I would note. Yeah, nobody has a better history. Now let me give you those. Some athletes that were born in Alabama. This is a pretty amazing list. Hank Aaron. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Willie Mays, Jesse Owens, Charles Barkley, Bart Starr, Carl Lewis, Julio Jones, Bo Jackson, Willie McCovey, Satchel Paige, Mia Ham, Terrell Owens, Evander Holyfield, Ozzy Smith, Ben Wallace and Philip Rivers. How about that list is.
Amber
I mean, Alabama might be the greatest athlete state outside of like la, New York, Chicago.
Ian
I mean, it's got to be up there. When you have Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Willie, Jesse Owens, Bill, Bo Jackson, Holyfield, Charles Barkley, Evander Hobby, Lewis. That's a pretty good group, right?
Amber
Yeah, that's an incredible wow. And most of that is probably Atlanta area, I would imagine.
Ian
Well, Atlanta's in Georgia, so. No, this is Alabama.
Dario Melendez
Myron, you said last night that you were never good at geography. I am. I really believe that.
Ian
That's one of the worst things I've ever heard, to be honest with you. I mean, I don't. And you wonder why I said David Dennis Jr. Was one of the smartest people I knew that I worked with in sports. You wonder why I don't put you on that list? It's right outside of Atlanta.
Amber
I just assume everybody's from Atlanta.
Ian
This is Amber and Ian. We'll do some NBA next. Amber and Ian right here on ESPN Radio. Matt Jones, Byron Metcalf, fill it in. More genius to come.
