This is Matt and Myron, the Podcast.
Andrew Salt Tunis
If you missed anything on today's show, you can listen back to Matt and Myron podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Andrew Salt Judas filling in for Matt alongside Myron Metcalf. Talking a lot about Cal Raleigh, who has 38 home runs before the All Star break as the catcher of the Seattle Mariners. And why is it not being talked about, by the way, on espn bet he is the favorite to win the Home Run Derby. You can get it now at + 250. Myron, let's talk to some people because a lot of people want to weigh in on this conversation about whether or not people actually care that Cal Raleigh is doing this. Have people been brainwashed by the steroid era? Let's go to Bob in South Carolina. Good morning, Bob. Morning, guys.
Myron Metcalf
How you doing?
Andrew Salt Tunis
So I think it's great what he's doing. I think people really don't pay attention to baseball as much as they used to and that's part of it. But I think it's great what he's doing. He's a good Carolina boy, so that's always good. But I don't think he's going to reach it because they're going to be playing meaningful games in the second part of the season. They're sitting number three in the wild card and they're what, six games out of the division from the Astros and they play the Astros, I think maybe 10 or 12 more times. So I don't think teams are going to give them a chance to get it. If they do, if they did, I think you would get it. That's my take. Thanks, guys. Thanks, Bob. Now, I mean, the thing is like Aaron Judge plays meaningful games all season. Two, right? And Aaron Judge hits his, his 60 home runs. Like if the situation, if you got a pitch to the batter, you got to pitch the batter.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, didn't Bond set the record for walks that season? I mean, like, like, yeah, that's the thing with the power hitter. I don't think anyone's trying to pitch to Aaron Judd. Like, I don't think that's the goal.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right you make one decision.
Myron Metcalf
That's what makes them special. But again, we are having conversations about Cal Riley that we have never had about Aaron Judge, we have never had about Barry Bonds and some of the other power hitters across Major League Baseball. It's just odd to me that we can't. All I'm asking, Andrew, is just for people just to appreciate it, just to enjoy it the way we have every other race that was like this in the past.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Now, if you want me to be more optimistic, I'll give you something that would make me more optimistic.
Myron Metcalf
It would be a change because, you know, there's been a lot of pessimism.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I hear you. First, let's go to Jeff and Indy. Jeff, you're on Sunday Morning. I got to agree with Myron. Myron, I'm going to tell you, I've been following baseball for a long time and I want to refresh our memories on something you mentioned something about when catchers used to call a game. Do you remember a guy named Yogi Berra? He called the only shutout perfect game in a World Series with Don Larson pitching. So. And take a look at what his record was and what he hit. Lifetime career with 13 rings. Yeah, yeah, it's, I mean it's a great point, Jeff, and we appreciate the call. Now here I'll give you some optimism because the Mariners can be smart with this Cal Raleigh being that he is their best bat. Right. They, there are going to be days where he's going to need to be out of the field. They could still use him strategically as a dh, which I think they've done a pretty good job this year. I think in the 90 plus games he's played, I think he's been the starter for DH around 25 times this year. So the Mariners could be strategic if they have an off day, they could use him as the DH the game before the off day and that means they get him out of the, you know, the catcher's crouch for two straight days and, and they're not going to take him out of the lineup completely. It's not like Cal Raleigh when he's not behind the dish is going to be sitting on the bench all day. So if you want some optimism, there is a way Seattle could be creative with how they use Raleigh for the second half of the season.
Myron Metcalf
No, and I, I mean I hope they do that. And I think the advantage that he has is he's had all these multi home run games, you know, like so he's a guy who has just found Ways like that, to me, is the most impressive thing. You telling me this guy hits a home run at one point in the game and somehow you all still let him get a hold of another pitch that he blasts again? I mean, that says a lot about the hitter in terms of how good he is. All I'm saying is, Andrew, we might be watching something special.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And I just want us to give ourselves a chance to acknowledge that. That's all. Like, I'm not saying you got to love Cal Riley or assume he's going to break, but let's just do what we've always done in moments like this where when we are watching what might be something we haven't seen before.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Now, first caller Bob said people aren't following baseball as much as they used to. I bet you people will start waking up the next morning, especially east coast people that aren't watching Mariners games. They're waking up in the morning and checking espn.com and checking. Did Cal Raleigh hit a home run? I think that's going to increase as the second half goes on. Once he gets to 45.
Myron Metcalf
If. If he played for the Yankees, you know, it would be every day in our business. We'd be talking about it every single day. And because he's playing in Seattle, it's like, okay, it's cool, but it's Seattle cool.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right?
Myron Metcalf
That's what it is.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right. Let's go to MO in North Carolina. Mo, you're on Sunday Morning with Matt and Myron. Good morning, guys. How are you?
Myron Metcalf
Good. Got a question for you.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Do you think that perhaps the steroid.
Myron Metcalf
Era.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Perceived in a negative light because of the delivery system of the drug itself? Hang with me for a second. Suppose for a minute that they found.
Myron Metcalf
Some flower, some root thing down in.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Brazil that you mash it up with a bug and you eat it. And it did exactly the same thing as the steroid. And somebody discovered it somehow. Another couple of athletes turned on to it. Then it kind of spread. Hey, how'd you do that?
Myron Metcalf
And stuff like that. Do you think people would feel differently.
Andrew Salt Tunis
About that versus, you know, sticking a needle in you with some stuff from a lab?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, but those are two completely different things you're describing, though. Like, they weren't eating, like, special oranges, you know, that all of a sudden changed everything. They were taking things that were meant to build their bodies up. And I think with baseball, Andrew, I don't think with Barry Bonds, it was the power. He always had power.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right.
Myron Metcalf
It was the sustainability. It was the ability to Last over the course of 162 games into the playoffs and to continue to play at that level at his age. But like, so I, you know, if there was a natural thing, maybe, but that's not what happened. You know, these guys were on the juice, man.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right. And that's what makes it even more impressive for what Cal Raleigh is doing. And that's why we should be celebrating it more. Whether or not you think it's going to continue, it should be celebrated more. And that's why we're asking the question, why isn't it getting more attention now? Maybe it is a Seattle thing versus a New York thing because that is unfortunately a part of sports. Just look back at the NBA Finals. How many times did you hear somebody complain that it's Oklahoma City and Indiana, even though it was great basketball and it went seven games. And if not for Tyrese Halliburton getting hurt so early in Game 7, we could have had a great Game 7 that night. But there are people that feel a certain type of way about markets. And maybe that's one of the biggest reasons for Cal Raleigh not getting the love.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, no. Again, he's also not out there beating his chest saying, look at me. The way that McGuire and Sosa were, the way that Barry Bonds clearly was, you know, I mean, Larry, Barry Bonds had like an arrogance attached to him that like made you love him or hate him, but people paid attention to him. Aaron Judge doesn't have to do a whole lot. Not only does he play for the Yankees, he's a 6 foot 8 giant, right. With a baseball bat in his hand. So I think Cal Riley doesn't have that stuff. But the weird thing to me, Andrew, is in baseball, there was a time when those were the most appealing guys. My favorite baseball player of all time is Willie Mays. We see old footage of Willie Mays. Wasn't a bunch of big muscles or these like features that made you go, oh my goodness, this guy is Superman. But when he got into that field, he did a lot of stuff that looked like Superman. And I think Cal R looks like Superman in baseball in a lot of ways.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Harold in North Hollywood wants to talk about Cal R. Harold, good morning. Morning, fellas.
Myron Metcalf
You know, I've been thinking about this. You know, if you look at Cal.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Raleigh's numbers throughout the past years, it's been very mediocre.
Myron Metcalf
He's a good player.
Andrew Salt Tunis
He's a good, solid catcher.
Myron Metcalf
But it leaves in question how can.
Andrew Salt Tunis
He turn in one season, turn this thing around where he's in slugging and home runs.
Myron Metcalf
I kind of question, are you making steroid accusations?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Harold, he is in North Hollywood.
Myron Metcalf
Are you making, are you making steroid accusations?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Har. You know what, Myron, I'm not going to come out and say it, but something's really procure. And let me tell you another thing.
Myron Metcalf
You guys don't talk about it.
Andrew Salt Tunis
MLB is not a good product. I think a lot of people lost interest. There's too many teams out there that are not competitive. It's all about this money. I know that the Major League Baseball wants a salary cap. I think it'd be good for the game. But he ain't going to go for it. There's not a lot of good teams. If you look at it. When I was growing up, we had, it was great baseball. Today it's just kind of, it's not that good. Guys hitting under.200 are in the starting lineups. That's unheard of. It's, it's.
Myron Metcalf
I appreciate, I appreciate the call. Here's the thing, Andrew and I think this across sports. Go look at the guys who are averaging 99 plus on their fastballs today and go compare it to 25 years ago. You have literal monsters on the mound throwing things that no one has ever thrown. Like it's hard for me when I hear people say that. And it's like, well, back in the day, what, Those guys weren't built like this.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right.
Myron Metcalf
It wasn't the same level of competition. It was easier to hit a baseball 25 years ago than it is today. That's a part of it.
Andrew Salt Tunis
And by the way, I know Harold's in North Hollywood, so maybe, maybe he's a script writer of some sort. Cal Raleigh made accusations. Cal Raleigh, 27 home runs back in 2022 when he was, when he played 119 games. Then it goes up to 30 when he played 145, then it goes up to 34 when he plays 153. So to call him a mediocre baseball player, batting average wise, sure, 211, 232, 220. But he always had the power. This could just be that year when he's entering his prime at the age of 28, which is any sport, right? Baseball, basketball, football, hockey, you enter your prime, maybe all of a sudden you start becoming a more well rounded baseball player. And maybe that's what we're seeing out of Cal Raleigh this season coming up next. He also switched to a torpedo bat this year too. Oh, and of course we all know about the Torpedo bat.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, maybe that's something that's helped from too.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. Remember that took the world by storm for the first like two weeks of the season. That was amazing. All right. This is Sunday Morning presented by Progressive Insurance. Coming up Sunday headlines next here on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app.
Myron Metcalf

Myron Metcalf
The Sunday headlines.
Andrew Salt Tunis
James Steele, what do we got going on today?
Myron Metcalf
All right.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah, I got some headlines for you guys. Up first, Klay Thompson and Megan the Stallion just hard launched their relationship. That's official.
Myron Metcalf
Megan the Stallion and Klay Thompson are a couple now. So after weeks of rumor and social.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Media detective work, the four time NBA champion and three time Grammy winning rapper.
Myron Metcalf
Have confirmed the rumor in style on Saturday. Myron, what do you think about this? I don't know. I feel bad for Clay, you know, NBA championships, good hair, tall and all. He's dating Megan Thee Stallion. Must be a tough life for Fold Clay Thompson. No, it's good, you know, hey, listen, if he's happy, I'm happy. I'm just a little jealous, Andrew, of like people who get all the things.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
You shouldn't be able to be rich, handsome, tall, good at basketball and dating a superstar. Like, I feel like you shouldn't have all of those things at once.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Remember Eagles left tackle Jordan Mylotta? That's how I feel about him because he's 6, 8, making millions of dollars, one of the best left tackles in football, and as a voice of an angel, if you've never heard him sing before, check it out. It's incredible. But I'm a big fan of Megan thee Stallion.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Big fan. So congratulations to love for tweet.
Myron Metcalf
Why don't you say it twice? Why'd you say big fan twice? Like you go into shows and stuff?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Because I am a big fan. And I was a big fan when she threw out the first pitch in the World Series even though the Astros beat the Phillies in that World Series. I was a big fan of it.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I got you. I got you. Yeah. Good luck.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Love is love, baby. Love is love.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Andrew Salt Tunis
What else you got, James?
Myron Metcalf
I'm not. I'm not all that sure who Megan thee Stallion is.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I know the name.
Myron Metcalf
I don't think I've ever. You don't know Megan Thee Stallion?
Andrew Salt Tunis
I don't know. I don't know if I've ever heard of Quick Google search and you'll know exactly what you're talking about. It's not on his ipod, so he can't listen to it.
Myron Metcalf
Google. Google search at home. Yeah, just. Yeah, yeah. Look at, look at her. Okay, I see she's an Instagram. She's on. She's a big social media star too. Oh, yeah, but she's a big time rapper too. I mean, she's talented. She's a big deal.
Andrew Salt Tunis
All right, let's go back to major league Baseball. Yesterday, on his bobblehead night, Twins outfielder Byron Buxton hit for the cycle.
Myron Metcalf
The first in Target field history in Minnesota. Myron, what do you think about this? Obviously, I'm in Minneapolis, so, I mean, first off, it's cool to see Buxton kind of healthy to this point in the season, which is rare, unfortunately. He's in the home run Derby. I think that's awesome. The bobblehead night and then hitting for the cycle, that's pretty cool. And I just also love that, you know, it's cool to see a guy embrace a small market team the way that Byron Buxton has, you know, and the way that he just is kind of falling in love with the Twins fan base and vice versa. So cool moment leading into another cool moment with the home run Derby.
Andrew Salt Tunis
It's just so cool that he did it on his bobblehead night. Like, a cycle's awesome regardless, right? Game one, game 162, playoffs. The cycle is really cool. But the fact that he did it on his bobblehead day is really cool. We talked about this last night on primetime. Were you ever in attendance for a special game like that? Like, I went to Michael Lorenzen's no hitter back in 2023. Were you ever in attendance for a game like that?
Myron Metcalf
I mean, a lot of ncaa, like final Four, you know, Chris Jenkins, the Last Shot. So a bunch of buzzer beater games I've been at in basketball, but nothing, I don't think, in baseball.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Okay, James.
Myron Metcalf
All right, let's go to a headline that is near and dear to my heart. Goldberg last night and wrestled in his.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Final match on Saturday night's main event, he lost to Gunther in a world heavyweight title match. Last night's Saturday night main event, the card was stacked. You had Solo Siko defending his United States championship against Jimmy uso. You had La Knight and Seth Rollins.
Myron Metcalf
Which ended quickly and possibly tragically for.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Seth Rollins, who suffered a knee injury.
Myron Metcalf
But the main event was Goldberg in.
Andrew Salt Tunis
His last match in Atlanta, where he.
Myron Metcalf
Beat Hulk hogan for the WCW heavyweight championship back in 1998. Lost, went out on his shield. Myron, what do you think? Did he break anybody's face in the process? Very, very good question. Goldberg. Goldberg is known for hurting people. I mean, that's kind of his. He didn't want any. You know, and for me, what I loved about Goldberg, Andrew, was he was sort of this new spark in wrestling. You know, you had obviously the Rock and Stone Cold. And here's this guy, man, who, when he comes into the ring, everybody's just sort of intimidated by the look. If there were ever. If you were ever going to be a wrestler based on look, like, Goldberg, to me, has the perfect look of a wrestler, but, you know, beat some guys up, and that kind of became his thing. But also, I don't think you can tell the story of professional wrestling without Goldberg.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Absolutely.
Myron Metcalf
I think that says a lot.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah, wrestling has kind of gone on the back burner for me over the years. But, you know, when I was watching, you know, childhood and, of course, early teenager years, Goldberg was a big part of it. So it's always sad when we were talking about a legend today, right? LeBron James. And the sad end when we're wondering when that end is, it's always sad when you find out that a guy's done because you think of all the time that is surpassed as well. But pretty cool that we got to see Goldberg last night.
Myron Metcalf
All right, up next, radio host last week in Kansas City had some pretty bad things to say about Patrick Mahomes.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Reacting to a picture of Mahomes shirtless on July 4, this radio host, Kevin.
Myron Metcalf
Kaitzman of KCMO, called Mahomes, quote, fat.
Andrew Salt Tunis
And also said Mahomes was, quote, an embarrassment and told him to stop eating fast food. Did you hear about this, Myron?
Myron Metcalf
What did you think about this? Yeah, I don't. In general, people shouldn't comment on anyone's bodies. You know, Like, I don't think that ever is a good conversation. But also, it's like, you know, early mid July. And I don't know that Mahomes has ever been confused with a bodybuilder. Like, at the end of the day, when he gets out there, we know what we're gonna see. We know how good he'll be. How does this Kevin guy look? How does this radio host.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I'm curious that you said that, because I just Googled it. Interesting that he felt comfortable talking about it.
Myron Metcalf
It's always people who eat a lot of cheeseburgers talking about somebody eating a cheeseburger. Right. Like, I mean, at the end of the day, like, how about we just not talk about other people's bodies and what they look like and just live our lives, man? Like, again, if you told me this was a Luca situation, okay, all right. Maybe there's something in that we need.
Andrew Salt Tunis
To address because it may actually affected his play.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, this is not happening with my homes. And focus on yourself.
Andrew Salt Tunis
And, you know, God rest his soul, it's not like he looks like Jared Lorenzen. Right? Like, the hefty lefty, like, God rest his soul, he doesn't look like. Okay, so he's got a bit of a dad bod going on during the off season. And, you know, that week one, he could be in probably the worst career shape that he's ever been in. And he'll still. Still throw for three touchdowns if he wants to.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that's a. I mean, you're still picking him.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. Number one overall. That's an insane thing to say, especially from a Kansas City radio host. It's not like he's just like some hater from a different town. Is Kansas City radio host.
Myron Metcalf
That's insane. Yeah. All right.
Andrew Salt Tunis
The All Star Game starters were announced. It'll be Pirates pitcher Paul Skeens and Tigers pitcher Tarik Scubal. For the NL and nl, it's going to be Paul Skeens. Second time in two years starting the All Star Game. Myron, what do you think?
Myron Metcalf
What a matchup, you know, between these two pitchers, man. I mean, again, like, you can't say that things were better in the past in any sport. You especially can't say that with Major League Baseball pitching.
Andrew Salt Tunis
You.
Myron Metcalf
You just can't, you know, and I know that there are a lot of people talking about, you know, pitch count and guys aren't as durable, and I think that's fair. You know, certainly there's a different approach in terms of what we do with pitchers and specialists coming in and monitoring how many times these guys are throwing. But my goodness, watch what these guys are doing right now. You can't tell me this isn't the most impressive, dominant era of pitching in Major League Baseball history.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. And there's no drama with these decisions. Right. I know there was drama last year with Skeens. I know there's drama with Mizarowski right now, but there's no drama surrounding these decisions. For these two players to be the starting pitchers, that will be all star games on ESPN radio. Tuesday coverage will begin at 7pm Eastern. Of course, tomorrow night we have the Home Run Derby. Great job by James Steele there with Sunday headlines as this is Sunday morning on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app. Coming up next, more nil drama and college football. We'll talk about it next here on ESPN Radio on the ESPN app.
Myron Metcalf
Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Andrew Salt Tunis
You know that one friend who somehow.
Myron Metcalf
Knows everything about money?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. Now imagine they live in your phone. Say hey to Experian, your big friend. It's the app that helps you check your FICO score, find ways to save, and basically feel like a financial genius. And guess what?
Myron Metcalf
It's totally free.
Andrew Salt Tunis
So go on, download the Experian app. Trust me, having a BFF like this.
Myron Metcalf
Is a total game changer.
Andrew Salt Tunis
It's the Smucker's Uncrustables podcast with your host. Uncrustables. Okay, today's guest is rough around the edges. Please welcome crust. Thanks for having me.
Myron Metcalf
Today's topic, he's round with soft pillowy bread.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Hey.
Myron Metcalf
Filled with delicious PB and J.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Are you talking about yourself?
Myron Metcalf
And you can take them anywhere.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Why'd you invite. And we are out of time. Are you really cutting me off? Uncrustables are the best part of the sandwich. Sorry, crust. Something's got to give with this college football thing. We couldn't even go two weeks without drama starting. It's Sunday morning presented by Progressive Insurance. Insurance for motorcycles, boats and RVs for protection on the road and on the water. See how much you can save at 1-800-progressive and progressive.com this is Sunday Morning with Matt and Myron. I'm Andrew Salt Tunis filling in for Matt. So, Myron, we have more nil drama. I feel like we're going to have nil drama for maybe forever, it seems like. So we had a deal in place that didn't even last really two weeks. Attorneys negotiated a $2.8 billion lawsuit settlement with the NCAA. And four power conferences took issue Friday with the way college sports new enforcement body plans to vet name, image and likeness payments to athletes from school affiliated collectives. In a letter to the power conferences and NCAA obtained by the athletic attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman stated that the guidance the college Sports Commission, the CSC issued Thursday violates the terms of the settlement and that it should treat collective the same as any other third party business. I think you're spot on. You believe this is going back to court?
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah, definitely. I mean, we're gonna have more lawsuits because you know, the College Sports Commission was set up to sort of police this new era with the house settlement where every school gets $20 million. All the power schools to use on their athletes. Most are devoting it to football like 70%, 60%. And then the rest is going to, for the most part, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's volleyball and maybe another sport or two. But the College Sports Commission's goal is pretty clear. They want to eliminate the influence of the collectives. Right. And the collectors have been around for four years. Essentially it's been pay for play. Like people can tell you whatever they want about the collectives, but guys have been getting paid to make appearances, to do different things attached to the collectives and the teams themselves, but not necessarily real endorsement deals. And I think the College Sports Commission is trying to attack that. However, the collectives have been to court like the schools have been to courts for years, to try to give the collectives that ability to essentially compensate athletes. It's also the way that schools are getting around the limitations of the new system. Yes, every school's getting $20.5 million or whatever it is, but every school's trying to figure out how to use their collectives to give these athletes even more money. So this is going to be a battle going forward if the College Sports Commission is saying these collectives are not allowed to pay guys the way that they have in the past.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. And look, we all know that there's always being money thrown toward players, Right? And you and I were talking about this before the show. You know, back in the day, maybe there was two or three luxury cars in the parking lot, and now it seems like half of the roster has a lux luxury car in the parking lot. But this has always been a part of college sports, especially in college football. So why we can't go an entire two weeks before issues already coming back up between this collective bargain? I don't know. I feel like there's a lot of people that are just being naive about this, that this has always kind of been an issue, including Colorado head coach Deion Sanders. He was at the Big 12 media day, and here he was talking about the money that's going around college football and how he believes there's issues with it.
Myron Metcalf
There's got to be a salary cap on this stuff because this stuff is going crazy, and nobody know where it's going to land, where it's going to end. And you have so many different doors. It's like I would see a player that said he got an offer from another school. And I'm trying to figure out why you guys haven't investigated, and how is that possible when the guy's not in the portal.
Andrew Salt Tunis
How's.
Myron Metcalf
How's that. Now, if that was one of my players, you guys would be all over it. I'm trying to figure out, how can somebody say, you got a $5 million offer, how. And the kid is not in the portal. So I think we. We need to be upright and upstanding. Secondly, I like the professional rules to be implemented in college. They're getting ready to be pros, so let's. Let's go two feet in, you know, on the catches. Let's mark the file. If we pass interference, let's do the same thing. The pro game is, let's do it to college.
Andrew Salt Tunis
So Myra, when he talks about the money, I think Deion Sanders should talk about the money because Deion Sanders is the head coach of Colorado. If Deion Sanders was the head coach of Georgia, if he was the head coach of Alabama, he's not saying any of this stuff.
Myron Metcalf
No, I mean, he's also a dude I think did a song called Must be the Money. And I'm, I'm guessing that he went to Florida State for free when he played. But I mean, I think to your point, it's a lot of like coaches feeling like other schools are getting advantages and all this. And that's real. But this is the salary cap. I mean, the house settlement is something that has been in the, in the development for years. It's been going through the courts for years. This is as good as it's going to get. These schools having the ability to share the revenue with their athletes. That is going to be sort of the baseline now of college sports. However, the collectors are not simply just going to walk away and say, we're not going to be involved. I mean, that to me is the next legal battle because these collectors are still making deals with athletes. And until someone shuts that down completely, I don't know how you can stop it. I think the other thing to remember, Andrew, is these are self reported nil deals. The new system is if you have a deal over $600, you have to report it to this new, you know, clearinghouse, if you will. You think everybody in college sports, Andrew, is telling the CSC or the whatever they are that they got a deal worth more than $600? Absolutely. Everybody's reporting how much money they're getting. No chance. This is a big mess. The NCAA and the college power brokers 15 years ago had a chance to fix this when Ed o' Bannon was like, hey, you all should be paying us for our likenesses and video games. And the NCAA said, nah, we'd rather pay millions of dollars to fight you in court. This could have been solved 20 years ago and it wasn't. Now you have the current system. We're not going to have a salary cap because we're not going to make college athletes employees. They've tried that. It's not going to work. I don't even know if the college athletes want that. What you have is the wild, wild west. So Go ahead and get a cowboy hat and get your boots and get ready to be a part of it, because it's not going to change.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah. And who's to say that maybe there is some sort of new deal that's in the works, that a booster doesn't just pay a player where it has nothing to do with the nil, has nothing to do with anything else. It's just, hey, I'm a really big fan of Georgia football. I have deep pockets. I'm in communication with the football program all the time because of my deep pockets and because of all the money that I've donated over the years. I'm just gonna give this guy a check for as a gift. Here you go. Here's 10 grand. Because I just really like you. And I also would really like you to play Georgia football. Like, who's to say that that could not be the next way to go around it? It doesn't always have to be charitable events where guys show up and sign autographs for kids. That's great. I want more of that. But who's to say that they don't just find another way to get around it where a booster pays somebody X amount of money to come to their program.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, basically, college football before nil. I mean, in a lot of ways, right? Like, I had a high school coach who played at Wisconsin when they were winning Rose Bowls in the early 90s, and he told me, Andrew, that every Sunday morning somebody would knock on his door and hand him a $500 check.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Didn't know he was, you know, didn't know his name. They didn't exchange pleasantries. Knocked on his door every Sunday morning and said, here's $500. Like, this stuff's been going on for a long time.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Absolutely.
Myron Metcalf
I actually think the current system is better than what we've had. Like, at the end of the day, the rev share gives more athletes a chance to get a piece of the pie, if you will, which everybody wasn't getting nil. But in terms of collecting the collectives, I don't know how you're going to stop these schools from pooling this booster money together and using it to build their rosters. And you know what? The guys at Arizona aren't going to stop working with their collective because they know the guys that are going Arizona State aren't going to stop. The guys at Texas aren't going to stop because they know the guys at Texas A and M aren't going to stop. So how are you, as the college sports commission going to police all of this when these collectors are just going to keep doing what they're doing until there's some sort of legal intervention. And even if there is, Andrew, these dudes are rich. They got lawyers on retainer too.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right.
Myron Metcalf
So we're going to end up in the courts about all of this all over again.
Andrew Salt Tunis
And look, it comes back down to just if Deion wants it to be like the pros. Right. You heard that the second half of that clip that we played, he was talking more. So from an on the field standpoint, you know, getting two feet in bounds and, and you know, running clock after a first down. Like, I get what Deion was saying there, but if. If we're talking about how you want it to be more like the pros, then this is more like the pros. You have somewhat of a cap, the 20 million, this cap, where I. I'll call it a fake cap because there are guys getting paid other ways. But if you want to talk about like endorsements, collectives, isn't that the same thing as professional sports? There is a reason why a guy may sign with LA over maybe a smaller market team because they know that there are more opportunities, more eyes. And we're not just talking about more people in the stands, we're talking about more eyes on TV for your endorsement opportunities. Same thing goes in the professional world.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. And, you know, at the end of the day, I think the biggest problem in college sports is literally for four decades, you can make the case college athletes were not being given what they deserved. Like, are you telling me that Peyton Manning, when he walked into Tennessee Stadium and there are a hundred thousand people, whatever, they're in the late 90s and this dude's not getting a piece of the pie. He didn't deserve it. Like, are you kidding me? Like, at the end of the day, these coaches come from an era where they weren't compensated and they should have been. So now a lot of this is we never plan to have to share. That's one thing. The rev share thing, though, is putting more pressure on budgets overall. I think what these coaches realize is there's an era where you can't get the 6, 7, 8, 9, $10 million salary anymore because so much money is going to have to go towards the pool of money that players are getting. So for the first time, remember nil, isn't the schools paying players? People would say that, oh, the schools are. No, they weren't. Outside people were paying them. Now the schools are paying players. And now in a weird way the coaches are actually competing with their players for money. And that has never been the case up until this point.

I won't call you Karen Metcalf, I promise you that, with Myron Metcalf here on Sunday Morning on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app. So we were talking about this before the show and now that I heard the clip. So how long did you wait before you made the call?
Myron Metcalf
Well, everybody's killing me, man. Here's the problem, okay? I was working on July 3, that night on game night, right? So It's a show 10 to 1 Eastern, right? So I mean, it's like two hours straight of fireworks and they're getting louder. And at one point, like everyone in the studio, Rachel was there. I think Rachel heard it.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah, I rolled to his defense.
Myron Metcalf
It was very loud. I heard it over the microphone in my headphones. Like, it was the point. It was to the point where I was like, I may have to move somewhere. And it was so loud. It's not like I have a lot of options to get away from it in my house. Or I was like, am I gonna have to like, not do the show? Cause it's just, it was so loud, right? I can't get up, Andrew, and like walk outside and go around the corner, right? I'm working. So I just, I called the non emergency line, I said, hey, I hate to be this guy, but it's a little crazy. They were letting off mateys and all types of crazy stuff and it was like they've had two hours. Like, why do I have to let you do fireworks till 3 o' clock in the morning?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Yeah, that's why.
Myron Metcalf
Is that something I have to do? Yeah, I don't agree with that.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Now, you know I'm from Philly, so look, the nation's capital, the real nation's capital, all right? And the fireworks are a big deal in the area. I hate it. And here's the problem. I get it. If you're going to like a ballpark and it's firework night and it's a beautiful scene. What I don't like is the neighborhood firework because they set off like five and it's just. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's really not a good show. Like they're probably just drunk and they say, oh, it's for the kids. And it's like, it's not for the kids, it's for yourself because you've been drinking all day and you want to try to celebrate. Show your American patriots. Oh, I'm patriotic, Let me set off these fireworks. And it's like pop. And then you have to wait because they're lighting the other one because you don't want a JPP situation or a Najee Harris situation as we're finding out. And so they're trying to be careful, which is great. And now all of a sudden your 5 fireworks turns into a 50 minute ordeal. I got a 3 year old at home. Pipe down.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, so I'm with you.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Don't worry, Myron, I'm with you on this one.
Myron Metcalf
Well, and we don't let drunk fireworks people make decisions, right? Like we don't, we don't let them have votes on anything.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Right?
Myron Metcalf
And at the end of the day, like at some point they need, they need to be reminded that. Chill. And again, my neighborhood, it sounded like I was in saving Private Ryan 2 or something. Like I was in a war film that I wasn't even casted. I was like, why am I suddenly, you know, what is this Dunkirk? Like, what movie am I in all of a sudden? Because it sounds like, you know, bombs are exploding over my house. And, and again, there's a whole bunch of ESPN people, my, my co host included, who are like, I can't believe you did would do that, I guarantee. And still back me up on this. If Matt Jones had been on this show and there were loud noises going off that were coming through the microphone and we were like, matt, it's too loud over there. It's getting a little crazy. Matt would have done something. Chris Candy, I heard, has been crushing me, right?
Andrew Salt Tunis
Matt Jones would have walked out down the street.
Myron Metcalf
We wouldn't have heard from him for like 20 minutes. He would have filed a lawsuit. He's a lawyer. He would have filed some sort of summons or something. Chris Canty, who listen, here's the difference. He's been crushing me and I deserve it because I was doing the Dear Mama thing on Mother's Day. But Canti's in a studio, you know, with the whole crew in the beautiful set in New York. I'm at home in Minnesota. It's a little different situation. I saw Chris Candy do a video Andrew, where he was sitting in a plane and the guy was kind of leaning back and can't. He was not having it. I don't think he'd be okay being home with fireworks sounds coming through the microphone and he'd be okay with it. So some of these people are like crushing me, but they would have done something too in that same situation.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Listen, I'm not just doing this because I'm doing the show with you today. I stand by you on this one.
Myron Metcalf
Thank you.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I mean, I'm anti firework unless it's like a real legit display, not just the neighborhood display. Hey, catch new episodes of Vibe Check. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5pm Eastern on Disney plus, the new female led sports studio show exclusive to Disney plus, produced by ESPN. Monday at 5pm Eastern will spotlight a panel of ESPN's most prominent female voices featuring Elle Duncan, Andrea Carter, Monica McNutt, Shanae Gumaque, Hannah Storm and more. The show will call upon the rotating panel's expertise, insight and storytelling to to provide a fresh, perspective driven approach to sports coverage. One fresh perspective driven approach I don't think is necessarily coming from the former starting quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. We have the Netflix quarterback season two going on right now. Quarterback season one was tremendous and I'm so happy that we have season two of it. Well, we got a little taste of what was going on in the cousin's household when he was benched by the Atlanta Falcons. Here was Kirk Cousins and his reaction to the drafting of Michael Penix Jr. Ended up signing with Atlanta and was pretty excited about the chance to get down there and start fresh. And then, you know, was pretty surprised.
Myron Metcalf
When the NFL draft happened.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Wasn't expecting us to take a quarterback.
Myron Metcalf
So high at the time. It felt like I had been a.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Little bit misled or certainly if I.
Myron Metcalf
Had the information around free agency, it certainly would have affected my decision.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I had no reason to leave Minnesota.
Myron Metcalf
With how much we loved it there.
Andrew Salt Tunis
If both teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But I've also learned in 12 years in this league that you're not entitled to anything. It's all about being able to earn your spot and prove yourself, then leave it at that. It's up to you to prove yourself. You were signed to be the starting quarterback. You are not giving $100 million of guaranteed money to be the backup to Michael Penix Jr. Michael Penix Jr. Was drafted to work his way up and eventually replace you after your three years were up or maybe two years are up. Because we all know a three year contract, the NFL actually means two. But Kirk, what happened to the competitive nature? You're the guy. It's your job to lose. Don't allow yourself to lose it. Your thoughts, Myron?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I think that's the problem is like, okay, I can agree with you, like a couple things can be true. If they told him they weren't going to draft a quarterback that high and they did it, I can understand how you would feel misled in that situation. But it's a lot different than if Kirk Cousins is saying, you should have allowed me to decide if you were going to draft a quarterback. Like wanting sort of personnel control. I also don't think he's telling the full story right. The Minnesota Vikings were not going to give him $100 million guaranteed to remain their quarterback. Were there conversations about a deal? Yes. But the Minnesota Vikings understood what they were dealing with. They felt like they had already seen the best of Kirk Cousins and guess what? They were right. So maybe he would have stayed with Minnesota. It wouldn't have been on that kind of a contract. And they were going to draft his successor whether he liked it or not.
Andrew Salt Tunis
Absolutely.
Myron Metcalf
The Falcons did the same thing. They just maybe weren't as direct as I think the Minnesota Vikings were. But to your point, Andrew, when you come out and finish the season the way that Kirk Cousins did, I don't really think that's your line in this. You didn't live up to the $100 million contract. You got beat out by a guy that some people had as a second round grade in the NFL draft. You were the one that collapsed at the end of the season. Let's start there because that's the only thing people are going to care about in terms of the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I know it's a little bit of a different situation, but if you want to talk about being misled, remind me the year he was drafted by the Now Commanders, didn't they select another quarterback in that exact same draft? You don't think RT3 may have felt a little misled that you then drafted Kirk Cousins later on that same draft?
Myron Metcalf
Like it's your own experience? But I don't think we should ever say RG3's name again. Just a different thing.
Andrew Salt Tunis
I hear what you're saying. Coming up next here on Sunday morning, we'll play the hottest take we've heard all week next on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app.
