Is Matt and Myron the podcast.
Matt Myron
Luckily, I don't have to pronounce that guy's name anymore because they lost. I had it though. I worked on it all week. It's Matt Myron on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. The Mariners and Blue jays tonight on ESPN Radio 7:30 Eastern. And on the ESPN app, we also have Rams, Ravens today. By the way, coverage there begins at noon. Eduardo Perez will be on the call for Mariners, Blue Jays alongside Carl Ravitch and Tim Kirchen. Eduardo, thank you for that last week and correcting my pronunciation. And now I'm ready to rock. Save the show.
Eduardo Perez
I'm trying to save the show for you guys, man. I, I did my best. I did my best. You know what? You, you owned it. And that's the best part about it. You owned it. And you know, Schwittler did really well the second time around.
Matt Myron
He did.
Eduardo Perez
Unfortunately, they did not hit enough. And we don't get to be, we don't get to have you say the name until maybe next year when he dominates again.
Matt Myron
Yeah, well, I hope that happens. This is a, this is going to be, no matter how it plays out, the first time that these teams that end up going to the World Series will be the first World Series matchup between this group of teams. It is refreshing for a lot of baseball fans that there are some different names in this group with the Blue Jays, the Mariners and the Brewers. Eduardo, if you were lit, if you were just talking to the average fan out there listening that, that maybe it doesn't follow baseball on a day to day basis. They know the Dodgers tell people what they should focus on about these other three teams, that makes them very compelling.
Eduardo Perez
They have the ability to make contact. You look at the Toronto Blue Jays. If you're a Yankee fan, you're probably tired of hearing it, wow, these guys put the ball in play with two strikes. They dominated. You look at the Milwaukee Brewers Yesterday with two strikes, they hit three home runs. They're a team that understand how to be able to shorten up their strokes and not try to do more than what they can. And it doesn't seem like they're just going to the century, and they don't care if they swing and miss with the Dodgers. Well, we all know about the Dodgers, the star part of the style, the star power that's there, the immense budget that they have. But then you look at the other teams, and they've had to do it from within, right? The Milwaukee brewers have had to do it from within. The Seattle Mariners, they're pitching. They did it from within. Julio Rodriguez is also an international start. He's done it coming up through the Seattle organization, they made some trades to be able to accommodate some positions like first base and like third base with Eugenio Suarez and Naylor. Those guys have been really a really good addition to the Seattle Mariners. And then we have the Toronto Blue Jays. Man, I'm in Toronto right now, everybody. And I'm not talking just the city of Toronto. This is going to be really interesting because it's Toronto, Seattle, and you have two of the biggest cities in Canada, Toronto being one of them, and the other one being Vancouver, British Columbia. And Vancouver is only an hour and a half away from Seattle, and that is another Toronto haven. Blue Jays haven. So the Blue Jays fans are going to be out. They're going to be. They're going to be exposed in Seattle, and they're definitely going to be here loud. And I think this is a moment that a lot of fans all around the world should be able to recognize, is that Toronto is not just one city, it's an entire country of Canada.
Myron
You mentioned, obviously, some compelling names, but. But I think we all know who the headliner is, and that's the Milwaukee Brewers. America's team, Eduardo. The team that the whole country should be rooting for right now. Because I don't see how you can vote for the Dodgers in this series. I'm convinced they're going to win. Eduardo, how does that happen? Give me the scenario where my brewers advance to the World Series.
Eduardo Perez
Well, the scenario is simple. There's not a better defensive team in baseball than the Milwaukee brewers right now. And that's the reality. This is. This is a team that in the outfield, they can run them down with the best of them in the National League, because the American League is more. You look at Toronto as being that type of team, but in the National League, the Milwaukee players can defend. They can also do the small ball stuff. They can play small ball. They know how to move the runners over, they steal. They're a fast team. They're an exciting team to watch, you know, and they have the leadership and Kristen Yelich there. But what is the key to Milwaukee is their pitching. They have guys that throw 97 miles per hour or higher, and it's hard to hit. That's, you know, it's a given statistic that's out there, that 97 plus, it's just harder to square up. And it's not like they're trying to hit the corners. They're trying to overpower you. And they can do it with a slider as well. And I think this is a team that. It's a sneaky team because it's another team that's been built also from organizational players. And not a lot of people know the names, but they complement each other really well.
Matt Myron
All right, so, Eduardo, I have a theory slash question for you. So let's look at the Brewers Dodgers series. If you're someone like me who thinks it would be good for baseball to sort of have some ability to change the finances of it and to somehow make it to where you don't have Dodgers, like mega teams, and you also make some teams at the bottom spend money that they don't spend, you could make a strong argument that, that the chances of that happening are better if the Dodgers win, so that people get tired of the Dodgers winning. Then if Milwaukee wins, which is kind of a way of people could say, well, see, if Milwaukee wins, then things are okay. Do you agree with me that to some extent, Dodgers and Milwaukee's a little bit about sort of the future of how the setup of baseball's financial system.
Myron
Is going to be?
Eduardo Perez
Well, I think this is a classic argument. I think you. I don't know if you're getting. You're working or getting paid by the union right now, but I think the union loves what you just asked right now.
Matt Myron
I'm not. I wish I was, but that's. I'm glad to hear it. I'm a union guy, though, so I'm good with it.
Eduardo Perez
Well. Well, this is exactly what the union is saying. They're like, look, yeah, you got the powerhouse team that do increase the ratings. Right. But you also have teams like the Milwaukee brewers that are in the bottom tier. You also have, you know, you look at it and you also have the Toronto Blue Jays that have spent. They spent this year. But there, it's a mixed bag of teams, teams from the bottom tier, teams from the top tier. And there is a balance as long as you know how to manage your organizational value. And that goes down to being able to draft, to be able to invest in the international side of it, to be able to develop, to be able to spend money on the development side that there's no cap for. And, you know, and you know, you have ownership saying, we want a cap because we want to balance everything out. Yet we look at the super bowl and we see pretty much the usual suspect in the super bowl the last few years. And you're wondering, and they had a cap, you know, so it's. It's just a really interesting dynamic of how baseball is approached, how it's played, how it's managed, how it's developed, and most importantly, how it's played within Diamond. How do you value each one of your players? And I think that has something to do with it. You look at the Cleveland guardians. I mean, they're in the bottom tier. They went into the postseason. The Milwaukee brewers went into the postseason. There are teams and there are possibilities of teams saying, hey, we have a shot. The Chicago Cubs, who were crying wolf because economically they weren't spending as much as they wanted to. They also made it to the postseason.
Myron
I'm curious, Wado, if the Dodgers win this? I think show is 30, I think Mookie's 32, Freddie Freeman's 35. Are we looking at a dynasty run here with the talent that they have? I mean, what stops them from reeling off two, three more if they get this one this year?
Eduardo Perez
What stops them is. Is themselves. Health, age is what stops them. Right now. They are. They are a really good team. They pitch, and it seemed like they were bored the entire season. And then come September and comes October, they're playing a better. They're playing their quality of brand of baseball. They figured out who they need in the postseason, who the guys are on the roster if they need. I mean, they left 10 Scott out of the postseason roster in the last in the albf. That was their closer this year. He stumbled down the stretch, and they're like, nope, we're not going to use them. It's a tragedy of riches, what they had, but at the same time, these guys know how to win. And that's the hardest part. What Dave Roberts has done with this team full of egos is he's been able to get them to play quality baseball day in and day out. And that's not easy. And for that, that's one of the reasons why people Think, well, he should never be considered manager of the year. I think it's harder to manage a team like that than to manage a team of average Joe's. That America's team is called the Milwaukee Bears.
Matt Myron
Let me finish with this. That game Friday night, I watched from the sixth inning on. I watched every pitch and I loved it. I loved the starters, Detroit and Seattle. I love the starters coming in. My guy, former Red Louis Castillo. I loved Flaherty, like having inner conversations with himself. No one was scoring, but it was immensely exciting, every single inning. Would you say, Eduardo, that's one of the great postseason games of all time?
Eduardo Perez
It's one of the great games of all time. Absolutely. When you have that type of length. Now you know why Major League Baseball put the designated runner at second base, right? Because you have situations like this where the inability of being able to score, the inability of being able to move runners over via the butt, but the quality of pitching was unbelievable. The inability of. You look at the Detroit Tigers hitters, 2, 3, 4, they went over in the entire game. I mean, there was nothing, there was nothing behind Carpenter in that game. But it's one of the all time great games. I'll tell you what happened to me. I leaned on, am I going to Detroit or am I going to Seattle? So I had two suitcases, one patch for Detroit, one pack for Seattle.
Matt Myron
Oh, that's kind of funny.
Eduardo Perez
And so I'm like, I'm packing one, packing the other, packing the other, packing one. It was crazy. My wife was laughing at me. She said, I'm going to sleep. We figured this out.
Matt Myron
I loved it. But somebody who wasn't really familiar with either team, just watching the personalities of the guys and then they get it first and second, nobody out, couldn't get them over. It was great. It was. It was great stuff. Eduardo, thank you very much. Enjoy the game.
Eduardo Perez
You got it, guys. All right, thank you.
Matt Myron

Matt Myron
That's right. That's how I feel when I watch these London games. The football is a vampire. Matt Myron on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. Do you know this is myron Speaking of 90s bands.
Myron
I want to say Nirvana, but I'm probably wrong because that'll sound like not Nirvana.
Matt Myron
Not even close. You got this is a very famous Come on the world.
Myron
I don't know this song.
Matt Myron
Come on. I mean it's like everybody would know this. This is. My mother would know this song. Come on.
Myron
Your everybody and my everybody are two different people. The difference between me and I don't.
Matt Myron
Know this group difference between me and you is I know you're everybody's. You don't take time to know my Everybody's.
Myron
I. I'm trying to think. I'm having a hard time.
Matt Myron
Pumpkins Smash.
Myron
Smash and pump. Oh, okay.
Matt Myron
That's right.
Myron
Okay. Corbin. Right. Okay.
Matt Myron
Yes, it is. Matt Myron counting down to kick off. The jets just made a field goal. It is 10, 9 in the third quarter. Broncos lead the jets in jolly old London. It is now time for the news. Outside of football, it's headlines.
Myron
The Sunday headlines.
Matt Myron
We like to hear stories that are not at the top of the news. Maybe towards the middle pages of an old timey newspaper. James, what's up first?
James
Yeah, after playing in front of over 2 million people and selling out 17 Major League Baseball stadiums in 2025, banana ball is set up to do even more. The they announced on Thursday on ESPN2 that the inaugural season of the Banana Ball Championship League is coming to 75 stadiums. 45 states will be played in front of 3.2 million fans next year. Matt, what do you think?
Matt Myron
So I got this one wrong completely. I feel like I'm a pretty good indicator of what basic humanity likes because I tend to like what's popular. I kind of thought this whole thing was a fad and was going away and now it seems to only expand. They're adding two new team teams like the Indianapolis Isotopes and the Something Clowns or something like that. Yeah, they're going to have a whole league. Kudos to them. They announced they're coming to Lexington. I brought it up on my show and I had like thousands of people write me and say they were going to go. Myron, I don't. I think Banana Ball's here to stay.
Myron
I think they're a good example of what happens when you're really good on social media, especially TikTok, because, you know, a lot of their appeal is was like those TikTok dances they were doing. So they have that market locked up. So I don't know if we're the right audience, but they certainly love it though.
Matt Myron
People have said to me, if I go, I'd love it. I saw that our team, the Party Animals, won the first league. So the Bananas didn't even win their own league. Those are our guys. Yeah. So they should call it. They should call it Party Animal Ball because the champions this year, Myron, were the Party Animals.
Myron
I'm sure everybody's getting a pay raise because of what the Bananas are doing.
Matt Myron
It reminds me of when, when I was a kid, my favorite cartoon was the Laugh Olympics. Do you remember the Laugh Olympics? It would be like there was Scooby Doo's team and then they would like play Olympic sports and all that. And every week there'd be a different winner. I was a big Laugh Olympics guy. They should bring that back. The Banana Ball may be the closest we have to the Laugh Olympics. What's up next?
Myron
We didn't have cable.
Matt Myron
You were just talking about Johnny and Frank out on the street racing each other. If it wasn't on pbs.
Myron
If we wasn't on pbs, it didn't reach us.
Matt Myron
So you did like what?
Myron
Nice to know how the other half lived.
Matt Myron
Mr. Rogers and what was the show.
Myron
That came on Sesame Street? What was the one Zubali Zoo.
Matt Myron
That would have like. Well, never mind. Who's next? Math Net.
James
Yeah, we, we put it, we put the party animals. We're a party animal show.
Matt Myron
I know, that's what I said.
James
They're playing in Hartford this year, so hopefully we, we get to go see them. The Aces defeated the Mercury 97 to 86 in a dominant performance Friday night to win their third WNBA championship in four years and cement their status as the league's reigning dynasty. The Aces completed a four game sweep of the Mercury in the first best of seven WNBA finals in league history. Myron Aces Dynasty?
Myron
Yeah. Not only dynasty. I think Asia Wilson is the greatest women's basketball player of all time. I think that's what she solidified in terms of what she was able to do. Another mvp, another championship. I don't think there's ever been a better player than Asia Wilson. But you know, in terms of dynasty, until we know what the new collective bargaining agreement is, all these players on one year deal. So all these teams could break up depending on what the new deal is.
Matt Myron
Yeah, the new deal is huge for the future of the league and what it's going to end up looking like. It might look completely different here, here coming up soon. I the only disappointment to me about this was that I think because it was a sweep, I just don't think American sporting public got into it at all. This is such a crowded time. I, I wish the WNBA finals were not right now because there's so much going on with the World Series, with the baseball, with football. It just makes it, it gets lost and I think it got lost this year for whatever reason. But we shouldn't let it sort of distract from the fact that Asia Wilson may be the best woman's player of all time. And it was a dominating performance. But I just, I do feel just kind of got lost in the shuffle this year, which is a shame for a league that otherwise has had such momentum going recently. What's next?
James
Obviously, as we know, the Bill Belichick experiment at North Carolina is off to a pretty bad start, but no one appears ready to pull the plug yet. Amid numerous reports that Belichick and North Carolina were engaged in negotiations to lower the coach's buyout. After a terrible start, the school and Belichick released a joint statement on Wednesday night, countering those claims, Belichick statement read, quote, I'm fully committed to UNC football and the program we're building here. And that was it. Matt, what's going on there?
Matt Myron
And you know, I would really like to know what's actually going on. You know, they, they canceled this week that, that Hulu Disney series. I now would watch every episode because I'd like to know what happened this week. Leave aside that they stink at football. We kind of knew that before, but you know, it was a, it was the local reporters that reported it was ending. Well, now those people have to go back to practice. So how did that happen? Like why did the local report they, local reporters don't post that, like put that stuff out unless they think it's going to happen because they know they have to deal with these people on a day to day basis. And then you got Belichick in the school saying, I'm not going anywhere. I know people say it, but they said it with a definitive nature. The Disney thing gets canceled. I myin. I would love, love, love, love to actually know what is happening on this week specifically in North Carolina World.
Myron
Yeah, I believe the reports. You know this, Matt. When a school has to put out a statement and says, just kidding, everything's okay, then it means everything is not okay.
Matt Myron
But clearly the reports though weren't true. They said he was leaving, but he didn't leave.
Myron
I think they said, they said they were having conversations and here's the discrepancy.
Matt Myron
But no, he, they said they are preparing for this to end. And there were some reports that he wasn't going to be at the next game fair.
Myron
Here's, here's the number that I think factors into all of this. If North Carolina fires him right now, they owe him $30 million. Yeah. So I'm confident that there probably been conversations, but there's not a whole lot you can do. This is a great example of going all in on the wrong guy. And it could cost North Carolina football for years to come if it doesn't work out.
Matt Myron
But I do want to know. The reporter said one of the reports said he was going to leave for a million dollars.
Myron
I did.
Matt Myron
I just made no sense to me. He's owed 30 million. Why would he leave for 1 million?
Myron
That's his own personal ballot. If he leaves for another job. So the report said there is, he has. If he could find another job.
Matt Myron
I just say I'm calling. I'm not saying the report was wrong, but it was at least a little bit wrong because he's still the coach. So, like, reporters get to say this stuff and then when it doesn't happen, go, what changed? Well, all right. Matt Meyer next.

Matt Myron
It is Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio. Counting you down to kick off. All right. Who is this?
Myron
This is Scarface. My block. Did James feel guilty about playing all those white bands? So then he went as deep as he could.
Matt Myron
He went Scarface to the hip hop.
Myron
Like, no, like, you ain't got to go straight to Scarface.
Matt Myron
Yeah. I mean, you could give me ludicrous a little. You know, he's like, I'm playing Bushwick Bill to see if to make Myron happy.
James
This is not. It's not. I know this song. I do know the song because I worked with Clinton. This is one of the ones that he likes.
Myron
So I just know Clinton liked it.
Eduardo Perez
No, no, no.
Matt Myron
I didn't pick this.
Myron
Is that, is that the implication? Is that what we are saying?
Matt Myron
Jay was like. Jay was like, no, no. It's not just Clinton. It's also Ryan Clark. He likes it, too.
Myron
They're like, hey, hey, play the songs that Stephen A. And Clint. Ryan Clark and Clinton like.
Matt Myron
Let's pull up Michael Eve's playlist on.
Myron
Are we all on one list, by the way. Is there one list? My man with the Scarface, he skipped Ludacris. He skipped all of the.
Matt Myron
Well, don't worry. Next segment, it's gonna be the dead juvenile dead presidents.
James
I'm gonna make sure. I'm gonna make sure it's all white.
Myron
Bone thugs, deep tracks. Are those coming next?
James
It's all dad rock for the rest of the show. That way I don't get made fun of.
Matt Myron
Tier 9. It is 10 to 9 in London. I have to tell you, I have had this game on.
Myron
Mess with you, James.
Matt Myron
The torture of this Jets Broncos game. In a world of bad London games, this Jets Broncos game may go down as the worst one that's ever happened. Like, the three and outs in this game are insane.
Myron
I understand. And you've talked a lot about. There is a real fan base overseas. Like European fans are into the NFL. But I don't know that we've ever given them a quality game. Like, I can't think of how many good games we've ever given London over the history of this cultural exchange or whatever it is.
Matt Myron
I don't know that we've ever given them two good teams. We'll send one good team, but then let them play somebody bad. I don't know that we've ever given them a really good game. And I feel like they get a lot of this where they're like, this is what people want to watch is this three, three and out, over and over.
Myron
You know, what is it?
Matt Myron
I don't know.
Myron
What do you think that is? Do you think there's someone trying to.
Matt Myron
You're giving. You're giving up a home game if you're these teams, if you go over there. So that's part of it. I think these teams are hesitant to give up a home game. And then, you know, part of it is that in London, it feel. It's never not raining in London. So I think that adds to the depression a little bit as well. And they don't smile.
Myron
They don't smile in the stands. You ever notice that when they ever put the camera on, smile? What is that? They don't. They don't have a lot of emotion over there. I mean, I know maybe British people have emotion. They like half smile. Like you look at when they put the camera in the crowd. Like, it's not. There's not a lot of joy. They look like there's a lot of comp tickets in that. In that statement, ludicrous statement.
Matt Myron
A game that in theory, people Are not. They don't have joy in an entire country. The Lions and the Chiefs play tonight on Sunday Night football. Yeah, Chiefs 2 and 3 after having lost a 14 point lead to the Jaguars last week on Monday Night Football. The Lions, after getting blown out in week one have been. I've won four straight since then, but they really haven't beaten a good team since then. So they're 4 and 1, but still potentially a shaky 4 and 1. The Chiefs are at home. I'm not saying this is a, you know, a burn the ships game. Like you have to win or you're not going to do well. If you're the Chiefs, I think you could lose this and still be okay. But I do think it's a very important game for the Chiefs to get beat. A good team get to 500, hit a part of their schedule where things open up a little bit. Do you like Kansas City's chance today?
Myron
I mean, I mean they're always going to be in the game. I mean they could have won last year, maybe last week. Maybe they should have, right? I think what should be troubling the Kansas City fans is what happened against Jacksonville. Kansas City wins those games usually, right? Like they're usually in control and that hasn't happened this year with three one score losses. Whereas the, the Lions appear to be rolling like the Lions have just put a big numbers. Everyone said Ben Johnson leaving would change everything for that offense. So far it hasn't. But also this is a step up in competition. So there's a lot of pressure on the Lions too. If the Lions lose to a struggling Kansas City team, I think there'll be a lot of people who say, well, maybe we got to slow down on the Detroit Lions bandwagon.
Matt Myron
Chris Jones, if you remember at the end of that Jaguars game, he did, he sort of gave up on the play. Right. And he, I don't know, he says he thought Trevor Lawrence was down. Yeah, I watched the whole play. It doesn't look like he ever really gave 100% effort during it. What do you make of that? Is that just a rant? I mean, nobody's ever accused Chris Jones of not trying, so it could just be a one moment thing. But what did you make of that on such a crucial play?
Myron
I thought it was more of a bizarre play. Like if you, if you watch it, Matt, I don't know that the camera crew knew what was happening. I mean, I can understand being in that scrum and assuming he's down, right, and then he gets up and you're not really sure. Okay, it either blow the play dead. Is it, is this really going to count? But I mean he took accountability for not listen more he did the way than he should. But. But I also think that's a Kansas City team where that specific playmat they're used to that somehow working in their favor. They're used to him being down. Like they're used to somehow in that situation, the Jacksonville Jaguars don't get into the end zone and win. So. So I think there's some of that in there too.
Matt Myron
I will say this though. I'm not all that worried about Kansas City yet because the offense is clicking. I know they lost that game, okay, but the offense was clicking. They scored the first two times down the field easy. And they were about to score a third time. And I don't know what Patrick Mah was doing on that pass. I mean that was, that was a very uncharacteristic play by him. But I mean they, they, they kind of marched up and down the field throughout the game and now they got one more game, then they get Rashid Rice back. I think this offense is going to be where they are and I think by the end of the year they're fine. What you don't want to have happen though is you don't want to have a sense where you're playing all road playoff games, right? Which is, which is something that could happen if they don't. If they're not careful. So I think this game's important, but I don't think it's like do or die for them yet.
Myron
Yeah, I don't know about do or die. I mean, they've obviously been on the road and managed to get to a Super bowl in the past. So that's not something that I'm sure they fear. But you do look at this team and you go, why are they making mistakes in situations where normally they shine? Why is Patrick Mahomes throwing an interception at the one yard line like he's Russell Wilson in the Super Bowl? You know, why isn't Chris Jones reacting the way that Chris Jones normally?
Matt Myron
You're much more negative about this Chief Steam than I. Like, I, I thought I taught you these lessons last year. No, like last year you were like this and I was like, they're going to be fine. You're like, no, no. And then they end up in the super bowl. Like, are you ever going to give the Chiefs the benefit of the doubt?
Myron
I told you a storm was coming. When they squeezed by so many times.
Matt Myron
They just Lost in the Super Bowl. That's pretty. They still pretty good year.
Myron
But they didn't lose. They got destroyed.
Matt Myron
But they was still a good year. It was still a very good year for them.
Myron
But they weren't competitive in this on the stage where they're supposed to be. And then you come into season, you're.
Matt Myron
Making it to where if they don't win the super bowl, it's a huge disappointment.
Myron
The performance in the Super Bowl I think was a fairly big disappointment. They weren't competitive. But now you come into this year and these are the exact same games they were in last season. They're just not winning them. So I think if they lose another close game this year, I think you should be concerned about a Kansas City team that usually is in those situations and it works out in their favor.
Matt Myron
Kansas City Chiefs hater Meyer Metcalf we now know James Franklin.
Myron
No matter what, he hates the Chiefs.
Matt Myron
He really does. And he's been like this for a few years.
Myron
He just hate him.
Matt Myron
It's so weird because you would think he would like the Chiefs. He's always a huge Taylor Swift fan. He's always liked those Patrick Mahomes commercials. And yet for some reason Andy Reid, I mean, you know, he kind of favors him a little bit. You would think that there would be, you'd be some benefit to cheering for him, but you just won't.
Myron
It's not about that. It's. I'm just realistic. I didn't think they were that good last year. I think they were really lucky. Now I wouldn't have said that in past years, but I think they were pretty lucky last year. I don't think Mahomes has been the best. And how many one score games in that situation? I don't think Mahomes has been the best quarterback in football in three years. I think these are all factual statements I'm making. And now you're seeing the result. They're in these close games and they can't win them because there was a lot of luck of the draw I think last season.
Matt Myron
Well, let's talk about a team that, that has a quarterback you think is better but is 1 in 4 and that's the Baltimore Ravens. No Lamar Jackson today and now they play the Rams. I mean I do think this is a kitchen sink game, but without Lamar, do they have any chance of winning against the Rams?
Myron
No. I mean, and it's not just, I mean the injuries of Marlon Humphrey, Roquan Smith, Kyle Hamilton.
Matt Myron
So is there season over? Like are they just Done as a contender this year.
Myron
Yeah, they're giving up a million points a game. I mean, Lamar's not playing. When do you bring them back? They have the bi week after this. They just look like a team where. I think we'll look back at this group, Matt, and I think we'll say they had a window. Right. You know, I don't necessarily believe in super bowl windows, but I think we'll look back at these last three years and say you may have played the worst Kansas City team that we're going to see in the super bowl era. You had home field advantage, you had MVP Lamar Jackson, you had all of these things working in your favor. Derrick Henry putting up historic numbers, and you still couldn't get there. Like, we may look back and go, the Baltimore Ravens just missed their window to go get a ring with Lamar at his peak, potentially.
Matt Myron
I agree with you on that and I.
Eduardo Perez
You.
Matt Myron
You're right. They get a buy next week, which means then they get Lamar back their schedules a little easier after that. So if you could win today, I mean, obviously if you lose, that's bad, but if you could win today, find a way, just Cooper Rush, reach into the, you know, the bag and pull out a performance from the past.
Myron
Yeah.
Matt Myron
Then you could be 2 and 4 with winnable games and Lamar back then I think you have a chance to salvage it. But if you lose today and you're one in five, your margin of error gets so thin, I don't know that you can do it.
Myron
Yeah. And they're 4 and 11 without Lamar Jackson, so, I mean, things aren't looking good for them.
Matt Myron
The thing about having a guy like Lamar, you build your offense around a set of skills that are not transferable to the other guys, right?
Myron
Yeah. Yeah. You can't bring in Cooper Rush and.
Matt Myron
Say, no, you can't.
Myron
Can you be like Lamar Jackson?
Matt Myron
I mean, you really can't. It's like, yeah, you just can't do it. It's like you build a television show around Charles Barkley. You can't just bring another person in and think he's going to be able to do that stuff.
Myron
Yeah, I think.
Matt Myron
But here's the problem is here.
Myron
And this is why it's a challenge in situations like this.
Matt Myron
Is he losing? No, you said losing me the problem and then you were about to say something and then you were just.
Myron
No, I. I said this is a problem in situations just like this.
Matt Myron
And then I thought you just stopped.
Myron
No, you just stopped like somebody else cut on the broadcast and now we look scripted.
Matt Myron
I thought you had things to say, but I guess not.
Myron
Play Scarface.
Matt Myron
James, we have some news from Indianapolis that we want to get to. Plus the jets get a safety in London. So London people have to learn the rules. They got their first safety. They now lead 11 to 10 over Denver. That's all next. Counting you down to kickoff here. I'm Matt Myron.
Myron
Matt and Myron. The podcast.
Matt Myron
I know I keep saying this, but this game in London is ridiculous. Both teams should honestly be embarrassed. The jets lead the Broncos 11 to 10. It is constant three and outs. The jets just got the ball. They ended up. They've just turned it over now to the Broncos. That might be the. This, this may be the. The thing that defines the game for them in this. In this battle of attrition as they turn it over inside the Broncos zone. So the Broncos will get the ball around the 30 yard line. Patrick certain junior was able to. The second. Excuse me. Was able to cause the turnover. We have some breaking news. All right. I thought we'd have some sound by. But that's okay. Some breaking news. Adam Schefter has just announced that Colts quarterback Riley Leonard has been named the backup for Daniel Jones today. And Anthony Richardson is inactive and becomes QB3. The former Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard is now QB2. Myron, are you surprised at this news?
Myron
Yeah, I didn't realize it had gotten sort of this bad, but I mean, I think the cults have just been sending. Sending signals that this is it for Anthony Richardson. I think it also says more about Daniel Jones and how good he has been. One of the biggest surprises, two guys who were on the Vikings roster last year, Daniel Jones and Sam Donald, are two of the best quarterbacks in the league right now. So Anthony Richardson, man, was always a.
Matt Myron
Guy that when you put him on third string, there's no coming back. They're basically saying, that's it. Anthony, we spent the third pick on you. Yeah, just three years ago. And we are completely giving up. You don't find that a little surprising?
Myron
I thought they said that before the season. Like when they said the whole, like, we're not giving up on Anthony Richardson. When they signed Daniel Jones again, when in sports, as a reporter, this is my experience, when you make statements and say it's not what you think, it usually is what you think, which is why I put out. People put out these statements. So Anthony Richardson, to me, was always in a tough spot, but I didn't think he had a future. After they signed Daniel Jones and named him, the starter.
Matt Myron
Well, he also was not good. And I maybe ever. Matt, at some point, the NFL has got to realize something. And I said this during the draft process that year, you remember, I was very adamant about Anthony Richardson. People got mad at me and said I was being a hater. I'm not. When is the NFL going to understand that drafting these guys who did not play a lot of games in college and when they did were not good is the worst decision you can do? Especially now in the NIL era, you get to see quarterbacks who've played a lot of games and who have a lot of tape. Why in the world would you pick a guy that wasn't that good in college and they think he's going to be good in the NFL? It never works, ever, ever, ever. And it didn't work again with Anthony.
Myron
Richardson Because the 6 foot 4, big arm quarterback is sort of the. The Instagram model of the NFL combine world for these executives. They see a guy like Anthony Richardson and they're like, you know what? I don't care what he did. That guy is a weapon.
Matt Myron
Instagram model.
Myron
I mean, just in terms of the idea. People see him and they're like, wow. I mean, this guy is amazing. I want, you know, I want to be in that person's world. But Anthony Richardson just didn't play enough football. Not in college, I mean, not obviously in the NFL. When he got to this point, there were a lot of injuries.
Matt Myron
He was like, wasn't he like 6 and 8 in college or first 6? I mean, like, he wasn't even good in college. At Florida, a school where you can.
Myron
Be good, you look at a guy like Baker Mayfield, who was an incredible college quarterback, and now we're seeing him in the NFL still really good. I think sometimes these NFL teams are not willing to acknowledge that what you see is what you get. And I always thought that was the case with Anthony Richardson.
Matt Myron
By the way, we're going to go through this exact same process in this coming draft, right? There are going to be some guys who enter the draft this year. Lenora Sellers at South Carolina, who has not been very good at times. At South Carolina I thought he would be, but he hasn't. But he'll enter the draft and he'll be projected to go top five, and there'll be somebody who wants to take him over, say the Kid Mendoza and Indiana, who's just won over and over and you. And it'll end up not working. That happens, Myron, over and over in the NFL.
Myron
The combine is the greatest and the most dangerous thing I think we got. I think Anthony Richardson, I think there was an injury attached to this potentially that may be affecting him. But I think. In general. You want me to do the breaking news?
Matt Myron
No. It says he suffered an eye injury during warmups.
Myron
Okay. Yeah.
Matt Myron
All right. So that's. That makes a little bit. That makes a little bit more sense. He suffered an eye injury during warmups. But still, I think my long term prognostication doesn't feel the same. It doesn't change anything. But that may be the situation for today. By the way, the Cardinals play the Colts today. Colts with chance to go 5 and 1. Are they good enough to be 5 and 1? Do they win today?
Myron
Yeah, I mean, the Cardinals aren't good, right? I mean, everyone's talking about the Jonathan Gannon situation with the running back who dropped the football before he got that, by the way.
Matt Myron
I mean, he ended up getting five, like, a lot of money for that.
Myron
You can't put your hands on a player in this era. I get it. But I understood the frustration. I mean, you never want to physically confront. My thing, Matt, is always. We always, you know, people will defend the coaches or they'll be against them. What if somebody takes a swing? Like. Like, what if in that situation a coach puts his hands on a player and that guy reacts physically? You know, I've never.
Matt Myron
I don't defend the coaches. I don't. The coaching is the only thing in the world where we let people act like lunatics and we think it's okay. There's no doubt if the player had done what Gannon did to him, he'd be suspended for multiple games. Right? He would. The idea that the coach, because somehow he's the boss, gets to treat people differently, gets to act a fool. I mean, this happens in college in a level even greater than the NFL, and I think it's ridiculous. Coaching is the only profession where the standards of human behavior we just decide don't apply. And that really annoys me.
Myron
Yeah, I mean, it was a. It was a really bad move. I mean, Amari Dimmercado drops the ball, you know, before he gets into the end zone, which is one of those things that your elementary school coach tells you not to do. But I just think to put your hands on a player, like, to me, you're crossing the line. And if a player responds in the same way, I don't think they should be penalized. And you're right. Had he responded, who knows what would have happened?
Eduardo Perez
From.
Matt Myron
There are the Colts contenders for you?
Myron
Yeah, I mean, right now. I mean, they got the best running.
Matt Myron
Back in the afc.
Myron
Yeah, they got. They're the sleeper. I don't. I mean, sleeper for me, sure. They got the best running back in the NFL and Jonathan Taylor. They got a capable defense. They have Daniel Jones playing at a really high level. So at this point, I think you got to put the Colts in that sleeper conversation.
Matt Myron
Yeah, they're not a contender for me. I mean, I. But they are. They are good. And I think the Jonathan Taylor piece is huge. You know, I mean, when you get a guy who is definitively the best at his position in the league, then you're going to have a good shot. And he. You can give Jonathan Taylor the ball. You know, the guy's going to get three or four yards no matter what. And then Daniel Jones has shown in his career, when he had a healthy sake, one Barkley and an offensive line, the Giants were competitive as well. Right. So he's shown that if he has that guy, he can do it, and I don't see why that wouldn't continue.

Matt and Myron, the Podcast.
October 12, 2025 | ESPN Radio | Hosts: Myron Medcalf & Matt Jones
Special Guest: Eduardo Perez (ESPN MLB Analyst & Broadcaster)
This energetic and wide-ranging episode features Matt and Myron discussing the latest developments across the sports landscape, with a big focus on Major League Baseball playoffs. The hour’s highlight is an in-depth conversation with ESPN’s Eduardo Perez, who previews the upcoming Mariners–Blue Jays game, analyzes playoff contenders, and debates baseball’s economic structure. The hosts then pivot to cover other current sports headlines—WNBA, football controversies, and offbeat stories—before wrapping up with live NFL updates and some classic sports talk banter.
[00:35–11:21]
“They have the ability to make contact. You look at the Toronto Blue Jays… with two strikes, they put the ball in play. Milwaukee Brewers hit three home runs with two strikes yesterday… These are teams that know how to shorten up and not try to do more than they can.” (Eduardo Perez, 02:12)
“Toronto is not just one city, it’s an entire country of Canada.” (Eduardo Perez, 03:57)
“There’s not a better defensive team in baseball than the Milwaukee Brewers right now… They can play small ball, they steal, they’re fast, exciting to watch. And their pitching—guys throwing 97 plus.” (Eduardo Perez, 04:30)
“It goes down to being able to draft, invest internationally, develop, and spend money on the development side that there’s no cap for… There is a balance as long as you know how to manage your organizational value.” (Eduardo Perez, 06:24)
“What stops them is… themselves. Health, age… It’s a tragedy of riches, but these guys know how to win. What Dave Roberts has done with this team full of egos… it’s harder to manage a team like that than a team of average Joes.” (Eduardo Perez, 08:36)
“Absolutely… the quality of pitching was unbelievable… But here I am, packing a suitcase for Detroit, packing one for Seattle. My wife was laughing at me.” (Eduardo Perez, 10:11 & 10:56)
[14:48–43:49]
“I kind of thought this whole thing was a fad and was going away and now it seems to only expand.” (Matt, 15:22) “They’re a good example of what happens when you’re really good on social media, especially TikTok…” (Myron, 15:58)
“I think Asia Wilson is the greatest women’s basketball player of all time… Another MVP, another championship.” (Myron, 18:00) “It just gets lost… The WNBA finals right now, so much going on… got lost in the shuffle, which is a shame for a league that otherwise has had momentum." (Matt, 18:25)
“When a school has to put out a statement and says, ‘Just kidding, everything’s okay,’ then it means everything is not okay.” (Myron, 20:37) “If North Carolina fires him right now, they owe him $30 million… this is a great example of going all in on the wrong guy.” (Myron, 21:01)
[25:01–43:49]
The hosts roast the lackluster Jets-Broncos game:
“This Jets-Broncos game may go down as the worst one that’s ever happened. The three and outs are insane.” (Matt, 25:09) “I don’t know that we’ve ever given [London] two good teams…” (Matt, 25:44)
On the muted London crowd:
“They don’t smile in the stands… There’s not a lot of joy. They look like there’s a lot of comp tickets in that stadium.” (Myron, 26:26)
“Why are they making mistakes in situations where normally they shine? Why is Patrick Mahomes throwing an interception at the one yard line like he’s Russell Wilson in the Super Bowl?” (Myron, 30:16) “You’re much more negative about this Chiefs team than I… Are you ever going to give the Chiefs the benefit of the doubt?” (Matt, 30:40) “There was a lot of luck of the draw last season.” (Myron, 32:10)
“They’re giving up a million points a game… Lamar’s not playing. When do you bring him back? … I think we’ll look back and go, the Baltimore Ravens just missed their window.” (Myron, 33:05)
“When you put [Richardson] third string, there’s no coming back. They’re basically saying, that’s it.” (Matt, 37:17) “When is the NFL going to understand that drafting these guys who did not play a lot of games in college and when they did were not good is the worst decision you can do?” (Matt, 38:51)
“Coaching is the only thing in the world where we let people act like lunatics and we think it’s okay… The standards of human behavior we just decide don’t apply, and that really annoys me.” (Matt, 41:42)
“They’re not a contender for me. But they are good… When you get a guy who is definitively the best at his position… you’re going to have a good shot.” (Matt, 43:11)
Eduardo Perez on Canadian baseball fandom:
“Toronto is not just one city, it’s an entire country of Canada.” (03:57)
Eduardo Perez on the limits of baseball’s balance:
“Ownership says, ‘We want a cap because we want to balance everything out.’ Yet... we see pretty much the usual suspects in [the NFL] Super Bowl… So it’s just a really interesting dynamic.” (06:24)
Major League exhaustion:
“I had two suitcases—one packed for Detroit, one packed for Seattle. My wife was laughing at me. She said, I’m going to sleep, you figure this out.” (Eduardo Perez, 10:56)
Matt on NFL QB draft mistakes:
“Why in the world would you pick a guy that wasn’t that good in college and then think he’s going to be good in the NFL? It never works, ever, ever, ever.” (38:51)
On NFL’s “combine syndrome”:
“The 6’4” big arm quarterback is sort of the Instagram model of the NFL combine world…” (Myron, 39:05)
The show keeps a breezy, conversational feel, mixing smart tactical analysis, pop culture references, sharp humor, and a little friendly trash talk—the on-air dynamic making it fresh, approachable, and engaging for sports fans of varying depth.
