Myron Metcalf
It is Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio. Fun first hour, lots going on, including Pickle Fest, Draft T, Wolves, etc, but there's more, like a lot. You don't just listen to this show for entertainment with Matt Jones and my makeup. You also listen for news. Right? Like, as news comes out, you get to hear it here first. And while we were on the air, Shams Charanya reported that Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has sustained a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee. That was the report. However, if you listen to this show, you might have heard a different report come from Myron Metcalf, if I'm correct.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Rachel
So you said there was a text that came into the text machine, right, that said Myron had reported. Well, I just. I hate to break the news to you, but it wasn't Myron. So you take a listen to Anthony Edwards knee issue.
Myron Metcalf
Anthony Edwards has sustained a bone bruise and hypertension in his left knee.
Matt Jones
It was you.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, it wasn't Myron. It was me. Anthony Edwards has sustained a bone bruise and hypertension in his left knee. He had heart issues in his left knee. Blame me.
Matt Jones
It said it was me and it was actually him who reported that it was hypertension. It is left knee. We saw this show.
Myron Metcalf
Works out. Hypertension can be a cause of some more serious issues. But just.
Matt Jones
But this is the show.
Myron Metcalf
If you've just.
Matt Jones
If you're just tuning in. Matt told everybody who cared, Myron, because people assumed it was me. And I understand why you would think it was me that said he had hypertension in his left knee, but no, it was Matt who said it.
Myron Metcalf
All right, now, also, we were talking about a minute ago about the Pickle Festival, and you said something to the effect of when white people get bored, they'll create a festival out of anything. Isn't that what you said?
Matt Jones
Based on what I've lived, yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, so can I. I looked up during. During the break, and in Kentucky, we have a lot of festivals. Okay, can I read you some of the annual festivals that we have here?
Matt Jones
It's gonna prove my point. Go ahead.
Myron Metcalf
Kentucky. In Fulton, Kentucky, we have a banana festival that celebrates the history of bananas in Kentucky, which I didn't know was a long.
Matt Jones
Y' all grow bananas? Is that the right?
Myron Metcalf
Here's what's interesting, Myron. I've been to the banana festival, okay? And I one time, and I declined this. For the record, Rachel, I declined. I was asked to be the judge of Ms. Banana, and I did not.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Ian Fitzsimmons
Okay.
Matt Jones
I got a lot of questions about all of this.
Myron Metcalf
Where they get these bananas from? Well, so Fulton, Kentucky, is on the Mississippi River. It used to be when bananas would come up from. From Mexico and South America, Fulton was the place where they. This is before refrigeration. They had big blocks of ice. So when they came with the bananas, the bananas would get unloaded and put in the big blocks of ice in Fulton, and they created a banana festival.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I wonder who was unloading them. Yeah, go ahead. Who was unloading them boxes back then? I wonder. Go ahead.
Myron Metcalf
Come on now, man. In Winchester, Kentucky, Myron, this would be fun. They have a beer cheese festival. Winchester claims to be the world's capital of beer cheese. Have you ever had beer cheese?
Matt Jones
Yeah, but like I thought, is there a German community? Isn't like the German community?
Myron Metcalf
No. Winchester, Kentucky, is in charge of beer cheese, according to their website. Now, I'm gonna go further. Did you know that in Louisville, Kentucky, is the world's papaw festival? It is a. It is a gathering of all papaws across the world. And they come to Louisville for the annual papaw festival. Did you?
Matt Jones
I don't know what a papaw is.
Myron Metcalf
How do you not know what a papaw is?
Matt Jones
Are you saying like Papa? Like.
Myron Metcalf
Like your grandfather? You call him a papaw?
Matt Jones
We don't all call our grandfathers.
Myron Metcalf
I called my grandfather.
Matt Jones
Yeah. I didn't know Papa.
Myron Metcalf
I called my grandfather Papa. My grandmother. Granny. Did you not do that? Granny and Papa.
Matt Jones
Grandmama. Granddad.
Myron Metcalf
Not Granny and Papa.
Matt Jones
We.
Myron Metcalf
Papa was Newville if you were called a papa. Okay, you have a festival. Now I have two more for you. In Cumberland, Kentucky, they have possum festival. A celebration.
Matt Jones
You just making it up now. I was with you. I believe the last three possum fest ain't real.
Myron Metcalf
No. In Cumberland, Kentucky, they have possum festival. Celebrates the often mistreated varmint, the possum with a weekend of celebration. Did you know that that exists?
Matt Jones
So people just show up with a possum?
Myron Metcalf
Apparently people come and they have possum contest and People will sell possum that
Matt Jones
they themselves have killed is rabies all through that festival.
Myron Metcalf
And then finally. And I've been to this one, too, Myron. My wrestling company has done a show at this.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
The Poke Salad Festival in Harlan, Kentucky. Do you know what poke salad is? No. Poke salad is what mountain people, when they pick weeds, back when in the day when people were poor and didn't have any food, they would get weeds. They called it poke salad. There's a famous song about this. Have you ever heard Poke Salad, Annie? Elvis sang it.
Matt Jones
What would make you think I heard a song called Poke Salad? What about our history suggests I would know something about.
Myron Metcalf
You've never heard of poke.
Matt Jones
So basically, it's like poke Salad is y' all chitlins?
Myron Metcalf
Basically.
Matt Jones
Is that.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I don't know what chitlins are. Is that greens?
Matt Jones
No. You know about chitlins?
Myron Metcalf
No.
Matt Jones
I mean, I've heard it's pig intestines.
Rachel
No, no.
Myron Metcalf
You all eat pig and we're eating grass. This is poke. We don't have the money for pig intestine. We are getting. We are getting.
Matt Jones
You're just picking weeds and throwing them, like, their water on it. What are you doing?
Myron Metcalf
Let me give you a little fact, though. You don't know about poke Salad. It is actually poisonous unless you cook it the right way.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Myron Metcalf
So they pick this poisonous weed, and if you cook it the right way, you can look this up. P O K E S A L L E T. And if you cook it the right way, it will become not poisonous. And it tastes very good. And they serve it at this. But you have to be careful. You have to make sure you get it officially sanctioned or you might die from the poison.
Matt Jones
So you gotta have the right person cooking it. You don't want to somebody certified.
Myron Metcalf
You need a certified poke salad cooker. So those are a few of the festivals here in the state.
Matt Jones
I think it proved my point, though. Like, all those I'm really still concerned about. Like, if you have attended possum festival, I do think you need to see a doctor on Monday just to be sure. Because walking around with a bunch of possums and they're like, mean.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, possums are mean.
Matt Jones
Like, I've been. I've been there. A cornered possum.
Myron Metcalf
And, you know, they're actually opossums. It starts with an O.
Matt Jones
Yes, but they're mean.
Myron Metcalf
But we silenced it in Kentucky. So there you go. And there are more. I may give you more later on in the show. The Red Sox have fired their coaching staff. They got rid of manager Alex Cora
Matt Jones
and 5. Who else can make that kind of a transition?
Myron Metcalf
But I show who can go from
Matt Jones
Poke Salad fest to go ahead Alex
Myron Metcalf
Cora and five members of his coaching staff after a terrible start. They have to be the only coaching staff ever fired after a 14 to 1 victory because at least they went out with a bang. And they fired them all with one game remaining in the series and an off day on Monday, which was odd to me. And now Alex Cora and his entire coaching staff is out. Myron, just logistically, who is managing the game today?
Matt Jones
The fans.
Myron Metcalf
I think they're bringing the managers up from Triple A, I guess. Triple. The Triple A game today in Pawtucket must just be anarchy because they're bringing the entire Triple A managing staff up. Isn't that a crazy thing?
Matt Jones
Well, I think for, for a story franchise like the Red Sox, you don't expect things to fall apart to that degree. I mean, it was bad if you paid attention to what was happening early in the season. But that, that's, I mean, I don't know the last time a franchise has fired everybody like that. And I don't know if you saw the, you know, how they all walked out. Like, I guess they were happy. Like Alice Carr was sending text messages to people saying he was happy. There were photos of him smiling. So maybe they wanted to get off the Titanic too, is how it seemed.
Myron Metcalf
It's been a weird year in baseball because you look at like, like two of the high. Well, really three of the biggest teams, the Phillies, the Mets and the Red Sox have all started out. Those three teams, Myron, have the three worst records in baseball. The Phillies, the Mets and the Red Sox. Is that, that's kind of nuts for the amount of money those teams have spent.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean the Mets are. The Mets, like you know, the biggest disaster probably in sports. The Phillies are more surprising. And the Red Sox just couldn't stop the bleeding either. For a sport that where you assume if you spend a bunch of money you'll get the results that hasn't been the case.
Myron Metcalf
Well, then flip to the other side. Look at the teams that are leading their divisions. My Cincinnati Reds are 18 and 9. The Sacramento A's. I almost called them the Oakland A's, but the Sacramento A's are leading their division. You know, the, the, the Pirates are good this year for the first time in a long time. Like there's a lot of teams playing really well and then at the bottom you have these dis. With. With high payrolls.
Matt Jones
But my problem is you're going to hear a lot of people say, well, see, the Dodgers aren't as bad as it seems, but like in the playoffs, those teams are still going to be king. But I love the small market teams. I'm always rooting for the underdog in baseball that it looks like we got a couple of. Your manager is manager of the year right now. Right?
Myron Metcalf
Right now. Tito Francona I think would be.
Matt Jones
It's manager.
Myron Metcalf
It's only 27 games in and we still have the worst batting average in baseball and are somehow 18 and 9, which is really crazy if you think about it. Now there's more to this than just baseball and poke salad. There's headlines across the world of sports.
Matt Jones
Matt and Myron the podcast.

You can tune in tonight. Baseball action Royals Angels coverage of Sunday night baseball begins at 6:30 Eastern on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. I can't think of two teams that would be less rivals than the Royals and the Angels. What do they even talk about?
Matt Jones
I don't know. Just no juice there.
Myron Metcalf
Their favorite Brett Saberhagen. Memories. I think he played Brett Sabert. Yeah, I'm just saying, I think he did. Sunday Headlines is brought to you by PayPal, the official peer to peer payment sponsor of the NFL. Let's get to some headlines. Extra, extra. Read all about it. Read all about it.
Matt Jones
The Sunday Headlines.
Myron Metcalf
All right, what's up first?
Rachel
Yeah, let's start in the NHL, Matt, your Carolina Hurricanes beat the Ottawa Senators yesterday, 4 to 2 that first round series. Taylor all out of goals. Sebastian Ajo had a couple of goals, but sweeping the first round series, Stanley cup playoffs. How you feel about your.
Myron Metcalf
We're on was a close series. Closer than a sweep would seem. Every game was very close, but we won. I don't know if you saw Myron. A lot of fights in the second period. I mean, they just kept fighting and including maybe the worst cheap shot I've ever seen in a mat. They two guys were locked up. One of them had another in a headlock and the senator's guy gave him an uppercut while his friend had him in the headlock. It was egregious. That kid should be kicked out of the sport for at least a month.
Matt Jones
But it's hockey, so, I mean, you know, they just.
Myron Metcalf
That's cheap when someone else has you in a headlock. Like, if the guy that had him in the headlock, hit him, fine. But you can't let your friend have him in a headlock and then you come in and hit him. That's a cheap shot. That's not what hockey fights should stand for.
Matt Jones
Dr. J did that to Larry Bird in the NBA once. Moses Malone had Larry Bird and like a headlock. And Dr. J, that really. 100%. Yeah, 100%. He did an interview about it this week. Yeah, most of them grabbed him. And Dr. J threw like three punches at Larry Bird while he held him.
Myron Metcalf
And that. I didn't know that happened. Well, I am anti. And did you see the Ottawa Senators fan who did the rap? Did you see that? Yes, it. Folks, if you haven't seen it, you got to look it up. An Ottawa Senators fan did a rap. It's as awful a fan rap as it has ever existed. Here's how I knew it was bad. There were five dudes in it and one girl. And the one girl never pulled the hat. She had her hat over her face the entire time. She was not going to show her face. The Senators were so embarrassed by the app that for game three, they sent the guy to Taiwan. Did you see that?
Matt Jones
No.
Myron Metcalf
Yes. They sent him to Taiwan and he did a video. And he said, the Senators wanted me to be as far away from the arena as possible because I was a bad luck charm. They sent him to Taiwan and then they still lost. That's gotta be bad when your favorite team says go to Taiwan.
Matt Jones
I don't know that. Yeah, I don't know that you ever want to bring the best rapper in Ottawa to anything, to any sport that's probably right.
Myron Metcalf
What's next?
Rachel
Can I just say that's one of my favorite things about the STICO playoffs. You probably never had any feelings about the Ottawa.
Myron Metcalf
And I hate them now before. I hate them before.
Rachel
And now you hate them.
Myron Metcalf
Cheap shots, all of them. Yes.
Rachel
All right, so the fabled two hour barrier for a marathon has been broken. It was broken today by Sebastian Sawway of Kenya in the London Marathon. He ran the London Marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds on Sunday, shattering the previous record, men's world record by 65 seconds. But he wasn't the only one who broke it. Somebody else broke it was Ethiopia's Yomif Kajalka. I don't know if I said.
Myron Metcalf
And this was his first marathon.
Rachel
It was his first marathon and he, and he came in.
Myron Metcalf
So I'm very impressed with this. This is one of like history's like last sports obstacles, the two hour marathon. So it's very cool that it was broken, but I'm gonna throw the challenge flag. All right. They broke it by 65 seconds. That feels like a lot. And a dude who had never run a marathon before also breaks it. I don't know, Myron.
Matt Jones
I'm a little course.
Myron Metcalf
Maybe it was all downhill. Something's weird about it to me.
Matt Jones
My hope is he comes back clean, you know, whatever the tests are. But if he did this because the conditions were legal, this is legitimately one of the greatest things we've ever seen. That is running on a treadmill at 13 miles an hour for two hours straight. Like the feature of that. And now here's the thing. Nike actually tried to get a guy to break the 22 hour barrier and had like a bunch of bells and whistles and they could barely do it, but they did.
Myron Metcalf
He beat the record by a minute. And then another guy did it and then another. Like four different people broke the world record. I'm just a little suspect of the track. That's all I'm saying. Not, not the players or this runner
Matt Jones
I want to be, but the track, I want to believe that it's certified and if it, you know, I almost
Myron Metcalf
ran a marathon once. And by almost I was, I was going to go through the training and on day it was. You ran for two days and then you had a stretch and strengthen day. And day three, I didn't get to day three. I ran the first day and I quit.
Matt Jones
How do you define the word almost in your life, by the way?
Myron Metcalf
I got, I started the training process. What's next?
Rachel
Let's head to the draft. The Steelers got their first win in playoff history in December 1972 by one of the most famous plays in football history, the Immaculate Reception. Terry Bradshaw, while in town for the draft in Pittsburgh, got to hold the Immaculate Reception ball for the very first time ever since he threw the ball and Franco Harris caught it. What do you think about that?
Myron Metcalf
I think you only put that story in because you're a Steelers fan and you thought that. Yeah, but you're from Pittsburgh.
Rachel
Rachel said it to me. Rachel, that would be a good.
Matt Jones
You know, my thing is, James, where was the ball? Like, how. Like, how did he hold. Where was it? Was it in a museum or something?
Rachel
Great question. I'll look. I'll look to see.
Matt Jones
That's the weird thing to me is, like, I don't think that ball should just be available to be held. Right. It should be somewhere in, like, a.
Myron Metcalf
I'm amazed they were able to get Terry Bradshaw. You talk about a guy that seems like a recluse. You can't get Taylor. If you go to a Holiday Inn in Oakland and, you know, Harrisburg, chances are Terry Bradshaw's there. Oh, whoa. What are you talking about? Terry Bradshaw. Next to rest in peace, Pete Rose. No one has ever been more accessible than Terry Bradshaw. He's everywhere.
Matt Jones
He is.
Rachel
A fan named Jim Baker ended up with the Immaculate Reception ball, which was used for the extra point after Franco Harris caught it and then went out of the end zone for the extra.
Matt Jones
Wait, a fan just had that?
Rachel
Yeah, a fan just had the ball? Yeah.
Matt Jones
Wow.
Rachel
Bradshaw. Bradshaw said it was.
Myron Metcalf
Tammy Faye, didn't get it in the divorce.
Rachel
Bradshaw said it was. It's a little deflated. It must have been up in New England.
Myron Metcalf
So a fan had the Immaculate Reception
Matt Jones
just sitting in his house? Like, no one sitting there. Yeah. No one in Pittsburgh thought, we should probably preserve this somehow.
Myron Metcalf
Jim Baker. That's a. I haven't thought. Thought about the name Jim Baker in a long time.
Matt Jones
He's using, like, a hearing aid, right? He was using, like, a hearing thing to. To tell people he knew their lives.
Myron Metcalf
What other piece of Steelers history does Jimmy Swaggart have, James?
Rachel
I don't know.
Matt Jones
That's a good question.
Myron Metcalf
All right, what's next?
Matt Jones
Ball was just sitting in someone's house. Is weird.
Rachel
The number 57 pick in the NFL draft this year became Mr. 57 and got a lifetime supply of Heinz ketchup.
Myron Metcalf
I like this story.
Rachel
And a red jacket. What did you guys think about this?
Myron Metcalf
Who was it? Who got the. Who got it?
Rachel
It was Iowa Center.
Myron Metcalf
You just don't want to say his name, right? Logan Jones.
Rachel
Logan Jones.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. That's a hard one. Logan Jones.
Rachel
I just couldn't find it. I had it on.
Myron Metcalf
No, I think it's a great. You talk about a great PR thing. Heinz 57 sauce picks. The 57th pick gives him the red jacket. I love it. Myron, I think that's exactly what you should do. Like, you know what somebody sent me from draft pass.
Matt Jones
What?
Myron Metcalf
Do you remember what Will Levis, former
Matt Jones
Kentucky quarterback, Mayo thing.
Myron Metcalf
But did you know he put out Mayo cologne?
Matt Jones
No, I didn't. I know he went all in on it. And this Logan Jones.
Myron Metcalf
Wait a minute, hang on just a second. Mayo cologne?
Matt Jones
Yeah. I don't know who was wearing that. That probably was a bad sign. What was ahead? Yeah, man, I. Ketchup is big. It made me think about my friend Izzy back in the day. He had a ketchup addiction when we were kids. It's like we go into like McDonald's and then when they. When they used to keep the ketchup on the side.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
Like he grabbed like a. He grabbed like 20 of them jokers, you know, and like put him in his coat. And then he'd just be taking them one by one by one. So like he would just catch up. Just catch up. He had a catch. He had a ketchup addiction. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I don't.
Matt Jones
Probably like 9, 10 years old.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know that that's like in the dsmr. I don't know if that's a regulated.
Matt Jones
No, but it made me think of him because he would have. That would have made his life, man, if he would have had a hold of that.
Myron Metcalf
Well, shout out to Izzy. Maybe one day you too can have your dreams come true. There was a Heisman finalist. Not just a Heisman finalist, a. Well, yes, a Heisman fight didn't even get drafted this weekend. We'll talk about it next here on Matt Myron on ESPN Radio.
Matt Jones
Matt and Myron, the podcast.

Myron Metcalf
all right, so we're talking about festivals in, in Harlan. They have a poke salad festival and it's for this song,
Matt Jones
Poke salad.
Myron Metcalf
Listen to this. There we go. Okay, So what do you think about poke salad Annie here, Myron? Who, who is she?
Matt Jones
Like, she just was eating poke salad or what?
Myron Metcalf
Poke salad Annie was just a woman there that, you know, guys were interested in, you know, because the way she
Matt Jones
cooked her poke salad.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, I think poke salad could be a metaphor for other things too, right? Like it was a little bit of everything, but Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton, you sing about pokes that when you were poor and you didn't have anything to eat, you went in the mountains, you picked this weed because it had nutrients and you ate it. Elvis did a science. Tony Joe White.
Matt Jones
Wow. I don't know. I don't know about poke salad until you mentioned it.
Myron Metcalf
I'm here to help you, by the way.
Matt Jones
I appreciate it.
Myron Metcalf
A couple more real quick of festivals in Hazard, Kentucky, they have the black gold festival.
Matt Jones
Do you know where you were going with that? But go ahead. I almost had to interrupt because I didn't know what was I was about to say. I was like, wait.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, you're right. Get the second word in.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you gotta give me a little.
Myron Metcalf
Would you like to know what the Black Gold festival.
Matt Jones
Black Gold festival.
Myron Metcalf
What do you think black gold is?
Matt Jones
Steelers?
Myron Metcalf
I assume black gold is coal. Black gold is coal.
Matt Jones
Black and gold. Coal. I don't know anything.
Myron Metcalf
It's not. The cold is not gold. They're saying, where's the gold come from? Because the, the coal was worth so much money. It was like gold to the region. It was black gold in their hills.
Matt Jones
Is that what they called it? Black Gold.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, yeah. I mean, if you remember, in Beverly Hillbillies, they, they actually call oil black gold. Texas crude.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Do you remember the Beverly Hillbillies theme? Black Gold. So they're talking about oil, but in hazard they're talking about coal, but it's black gold. And they have a festival called the Black Gold. And then finally, I've told you about this one before and I want you to come to this. If I'm telling everybody in America, if you, you know, so much of America is corporatized now. Like, like every town looks the same, Right? Everybody's got a McDonald's and a bed, Bath and Beyond and all that stuff. If you want to go to something that is completely unique, that you won't see anything else like it in the world. In Pikeville, Kentucky, they have something called Hillbilly Days. And people come out of the hills in overalls and like in, in hillbilly gear and they're proud of it. And it's called Hillbilly Days. Myron, I want to bring you, matter of fact, next year we might do the show at Hillbilly Days.
Matt Jones
So you want me to be at a place where people are coming through the heels and overalls, Hillbillies. And you just want me there. You, you think.
Myron Metcalf
And this is. There we go.
Rachel
Yeah,
Myron Metcalf
here we go. Yeah, there you go. It's Black Gold Texas Tea. So you could come to Hillbilly Days, Meyer, and we'll do the show. I have some videos from when I've been to Hillbilly Days. Real quick story. I took Romel Bradley and Joe Crawford, the two Kentucky players, I took them to Hillbilly Days. And as we're driving there, we were driving past this trailer park and there was a car that had crashed into a trailer and they just left it. And Romel Bradley, who was from Brooklyn, Joe Crawford, who was from Detroit, they looked at me and they go, where are you taking me?
Matt Jones
Yes, I was.
Myron Metcalf
They were like.
Matt Jones
And I would feel, I feel this. That sound like one of those things when you drive in, the sheriff just gets into the middle of the road and puts his hand up and tells you to stop. Like it's.
Myron Metcalf
Where are you fellas headed this time of day? Yeah, that's exactly right. Matt Myers presented by Progressive Insurance. Progressive can help you protect your home, auto, boat, motorcycle, atv, RV and more. And if something wasn't mentioned that you had in mind, well, we'll ensure that too. Maybe it can be covered@progressive.com 1-800-Progressive because it probably can be Diego Pavia was the head of college football last year. His mother was on television more than
Matt Jones
Kirk Herb street, nonstop.
Myron Metcalf
And yet when the draft occurred yesterday, he was not selected. And I haven't seen. He has not been signed by anyone yet, has he? In the.
Matt Jones
For training camp, I haven't seen anything. And there was that weird thing about whether or not he has an agent.
Myron Metcalf
He reportedly visited the Panthers, but. But that's it. He. He does. He did not have an agent for nil. He apparently does say he has an agent for the draft process, but it didn't work because he didn't get drafted. Do you. I mean, he was such a great college player. What are your thoughts on no team deciding he would so far, even thinking he's being worth bringing into camp?
Matt Jones
I mean, he's under undersized quarterback, right? That's probably the biggest thing that's holding him back. He's not built like the monsters that play that position in today's NFL. And I think when you combine that with the arrogance, a lot of teams probably just figure he's not worth it contractually. Now I think someone will sign him to one of those post draft deals that guys get ultimately, but there's a lot that comes with a dude like that. And I can understand teams being a little hesitant of bringing him in their locker room as a fifth or sixth round pick, but he'll see he'll end up somewhere, I think.
Myron Metcalf
But you know, coaches always say character matters, but that's nonsense. If character matters, if you're not great, yes. If you're great, then I don't really think character matters. But if you're not great, then I actually think character is a big deal. And I don't know if Diego Pavia would have been drafted, but there were dudes. There was a quarterback drafted from Rutgers, and I didn't watch Rutgers play, but I can't imagine the quarterback from Rutgers was that great. And Pavia didn't get picked. I know he's short, but I think it's all because they don't want to deal with his brothers. You know, everywhere his brothers go, somebody gets arrested. Like, they don't want to deal with any of that. And I just think they're like, I'm not doing that for a guy that might be four string.
Matt Jones
I mean, every episode is like, every day with him is an episode of Entourage or something like that. So you don't want to. You don't want to do like that being the story of your team. And he would be.
Myron Metcalf
And you Definitely don't want your third string quarterback being the story. That's what in a completely different manner Myron isn't that what happened to Tebow is that once Tebow wasn't considered good enough to be a starter his the distraction. Even though it really wasn't his fault, the distraction around Tebow wasn't worth him being a backup.
Matt Jones
And that's thing that's something that teams are always worried about. But I think with Diego, Tebow's a different kind of distraction. There was just such popularity attached to him. Diego I think if you're a team you're worried about what this dude's going to say when he steps up to your podium and reporters ask him about how he feels being attached to your team. Like that's what people are worried about is all the extras that come with him. Now mind you he ain't hurting for money. Made millions in nil money at Vanderbilt in college. So you combine a dude who it's going to be a late round big all that drama and he's already rich.
Myron Metcalf
Example of how thank goodness he came along in the days of it I he lucked out 15 years ago a dude like that would be mega famous and maybe not, you know what I mean? Maybe not have that much money. What about Garrett Nussmeier going in the seventh round to the Chiefs? A lot of people saw him as a second or third round guy, drops all the way to the seventh. Many, many quarterbacks went before him. That was to me one of the bigger surprises of the draft.
Matt Jones
It made me think that there's something else, you know, I don't know. Like what? What else? What don't we know? That was the weird part to me. I know this is a weak draft but we've had weak drafts for quarterbacks before and guys like that still end up third, fourth round at the latest. So for him to go that late just didn't make a lot of sense. And I just wonder if maybe a guy like that, maybe something happened in interviews, maybe there was an interaction, maybe something kind of turned people off. But that was weird.
Myron Metcalf
It was weird to me because, well, I mean let's use our guy, Ian Fitzsimmons. He's one of the he was on game night ESPN college football reporter and here's what he had to say about Garrett Nussmeier.
Ian Fitzsimmons
Nussmeier this year he was hurt in camp. I mean this dude was getting shot up with a strand oblique in camp. He should have been shut down. And that's part of why Brian Kelly is on the street right now because he wanted to win that first game against Clemson so badly. So if Nuss is healthy all year, I'm telling you, I mean, he's a better prospect to me than Carson Beck, Andrew Aller. I can't emphasize enough how stunned I was that Nuss is still on the board right now. I am absolutely shocked.
Myron Metcalf
Mel Kuiper had him as the third best quarterback in the draft. Ian Fitzsimmons had him. I think Daniel Jeremiah had him as the third best quarterback in the draft. He was hurt. Is this yet another indictment just of Brian Kelly almost as a human being? Because everybody. No, I mean it, like everybody kind of blames Brian Kelly for this.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I don't know what, I don't know if it's that simple. I mean, it didn't help, clearly, because going into the season we thought he could be. There was number one pick. Talk around.
Myron Metcalf
Yes, there was. Yeah.
Matt Jones
So to go from that to barely being selected, it's just, it's odd. And again, what happened in the build up to the draft, I don't know the answer to that, but I feel like probably Kansas City, if you're going to go any place that's going to
Myron Metcalf
be a home backup is good. Who else is that? Who is Justin Field?
Rachel
Justin Field.
Matt Jones
Justin Field is going to be the guy to start the season. So, I mean, he'll have a chance to learn and maybe get his shot, you know, play behind my home. So it's not a bad situation for him at all.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, not a bad situation, but a big surprise. Was there any other huge surprise for you in the draft? I mean, we talked earlier about Jeremiah Love and Carnell Tate, anything.
Matt Jones
Love was still the big, I think the biggest one. I think for me, I mean, that's still the. And again, people, people say, well, he's a great. I don't care. Like this is draft strategy.
Myron Metcalf
People, people think, I don't care if you're good.
Matt Jones
Well, no, the people do interviews and people are like, oh man, that's a good kid. That's a bad kid. You don't know anything. All I care about is draft strategy. And that's a terrible draft strategy to pick a quarter running back third.
Myron Metcalf
That's all we are. Those are kind of the big storylines of who got disappointed. But there were other things that happened in the draft. The draft is one of my favorite sort of cultural days of the year. I enjoy watching it and there are some things that always stick out to me and I wanted to Give Myron a few of them and talk about just the draft day as a whole. That's next here on Matt and Myron.

All right, so here's the problem. To me, it's not awful, but you can't say call your pastor in a rap that is like talking. And at the end he goes, we're going to go win Lord Stan Lee, which is also an odd thing. And the fact that the woman wouldn't show her face. So they deserve to get sweat. Myron, after that rap, yeah, that was bad.
Matt Jones
I mean, that sounded like generic, you know.
Myron Metcalf
And he's Bartman, you know, in Ottawa,
Matt Jones
that kid, he's, boy, that was, that was. He's got to end his career. Like, he can't rap anymore after that.
Rachel
Someone was wearing a ghostbuster hat in there. I didn't, I didn't.
Matt Jones
It was all, it was all bad. It was all bad, but it was
Myron Metcalf
as Myron would say, it was very white.
Matt Jones
It was. It was. But, you know, in our. On our show, we correct people. Like, we're big on saying, hey, let's take a look at things that were said on the show and make sure they're accurate.
Myron Metcalf
Yes.
Matt Jones
You named off a bunch of fast festivals. One of them was called Paw Paw Festival. Papa Papaw. And you said that was about people's grandfathers. It turns out the papaw is a fruit.
Myron Metcalf
I like hearing you say papa.
Matt Jones
The papaw is a fruit, apparently so. That festival has nothing to do with grandparents. It has everything to do with a fruit. So you.
Myron Metcalf
I didn't know there was a papaw fruit. What. What is that?
Matt Jones
I don't know. They said it's edible.
Myron Metcalf
I thought it was a pawpaw. Like the. The paw paw.
Matt Jones
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's a pawpaw.
Myron Metcalf
That's a pa, not a papaw.
Matt Jones
It says, he's correcting me. But the. The thing says pawpaw.
Myron Metcalf
What kind of fruit, Rachel, is a pawpaw? It's like. I think it's like a par flavor and creamy. Yeah. I just know it from the Jungle Book because they're like, you got to eat the paw. They teach you how to eat a pawpaw.
Matt Jones
They said it's custard, like, okay. Soft, creamy yellow.
Myron Metcalf
Well, thank you all. I have a question. One person writes in and goes, matt, I have a question. The Kentucky Derby is next Saturday, but I'm not sure which city it's in. Could Myron tell me what city the Derby is in on Saturday?
Matt Jones
Lover Love Kentucky?
Myron Metcalf
Louisville. Lova.
Matt Jones
You're getting better.
Myron Metcalf
Who's your Derby horse, by the way? The favorite Renegade got assigned to the. To the rail. That's that. No one's won from the rail since
Matt Jones
1986. Who's Bob Baffert?
Myron Metcalf
He just got his horse in the other day. It's like 100 to 1.
Matt Jones
I'll take that horse.
Myron Metcalf
You're going to take the 100 to 1 horse from Baffert?
Matt Jones
Bob Baffert isn't. Is running the show. All right, I got Bob Baffert.
Myron Metcalf
There you go. Okay, so the draft. Myron, I. You know, I enjoy the draft for non football reasons, and I just had some observations and I wanted to see what you thought about this. First of all, what did you. I'm always big on the fashion. What did you think of the family where the entire family was wearing all white?
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
But the player wore all black. What did you think about that.
Matt Jones
Was that Makai Lemon? Was that.
Myron Metcalf
I think it was, yes.
Matt Jones
Makai Lemon. And then did you see his agent?
Myron Metcalf
But the only white dude. That's where I was going to get to. His agent. We're guessing it's his agent. We don't know.
Matt Jones
We know. But I mean, just as a general
Myron Metcalf
rule, I don't think white people without a tan should wear all white.
Matt Jones
But. But here's the thing. He was the most criticized in the group. I don't think anyone cared about the other people. I think it was him that stood out.
Myron Metcalf
You think they just didn't like that he was in there?
Matt Jones
No. He looked like he didn't know if he should be in there. So then it made you feel a little bit like, okay, we don't know how to feel. I'm fine with color coordination.
Myron Metcalf
Are you? So are you good with that? Everybody wears the same thing.
Matt Jones
I'm fine with everyone wearing the same thing. The problem with the all white is it all. It, like, it had that, like, almost like, obituary feel a little bit like, little, like homegoing, you know, like somebody singing Amazing Grace in the background a little bit.
Myron Metcalf
Is that what you do at funerals, is you wear all white?
Matt Jones
It had a little bit of. I mean, the brochure, you know, with the person on it. That's how it looked a little bit to me.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Or airbrushed T shirts. Right.
Matt Jones
But I. To me, appreciate. And I understand why more people want their families in the picture and want to stay home. You know, to be able to have that kind of a moment versus it looked like you can probably only bring two or three people to the actual draft.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
If you're invited.
Myron Metcalf
And that way you can have a big part.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like that.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I do like the color coordination. I think that's good. Secondly, when they bring former players on stage. Myron.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I have to say, here's a pet peeve of mine. I hate every player feels the need to come up and go, what's up, Pittsburgh? It's like, you know, we've seen this 30 times. Just say the pick. Like, you all don't have to do a skit, you know? And I think that gets a little annoying to me in the second and third round because everybody comes up and
Matt Jones
goes, what's up, Pittsburgh?
Myron Metcalf
And Pittsburgh's like, shut up. We've all, we're here. Yeah.
Matt Jones
But I mean, they're back there sipping on stuff, too. I mean, that's like, nobody's coming out.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Matt Jones
Like, you know, it's been A lot. Like, if you, if you're doing it
Myron Metcalf
on day three of the draft, you
Matt Jones
spent two days waiting your turn, just kind of hanging out. But I do love the energy, though. Like, to me, I appreciate the question.
Myron Metcalf
They always bring out these international fans for around the world.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And I just want to know. One of the guys was an international fan from Scotland.
Matt Jones
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Or excuse me, from Germany. And he was a Jaguars fan. How did that happen? How did a random German guy decide to get into football and root for the Jaguars?
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, we, we send the Jaguars there.
Myron Metcalf
No, we don't send them to Germany.
Matt Jones
We send them to Europe.
Myron Metcalf
But I mean, they also had a Korean fan who was a Cardinals fan. Like, if you were just going to pick an NFL team, why do they pick those teams?
Matt Jones
I mean, we, we, we got Europe thinking that the Jaguars are the 90s Yankees, you know, the way we send them over there. So I don't think they know any better.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, you think that's the biggest team in America?
Matt Jones
Oh, yeah. I mean, they're, they're like, man, Trevor Lawrence better than Brady. They're having a lot of those.
Myron Metcalf
All right, what did we think about the, the video of the first round pick of the Patriots dancing?
Matt Jones
It was a lot. It was a lot. It was a lot. And I don't know if he was doing a tick tock or a praise day. I didn't know what he was doing. I didn't know.
Myron Metcalf
So there's a 30 second video where you can see him kind of being goofy and doing the worm.
Matt Jones
Yeah, he's doing the worm.
Myron Metcalf
That video was fine. But the six second video where he was just kind of. People can't see my arms. But he was just kind of like, I don't. That one didn't do him any, any favors. I thought, like, you remember the Patriots had enough problems blocking in the Super Bowl. And if I'm a Patriots fan and I see this kid from UT who's dancing like that is going to be the guy that corrects it.
Matt Jones
Got some dude on the offensive line doing a routine from Cats on Broadway. Like, I got. I have a problem with that. If you, you better be good. I mean, I think that's the challenge.
Myron Metcalf
He was like one of the Sharks on West side Story Newsies.
Matt Jones
I don't know what he was doing. He was doing some Broadway performance, man. Yeah, but he has to be good now.
Myron Metcalf
It is got to be. They gotta say like, do something and everybody looks funny. Last thing. I don't know how to say this.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
Why does Roger Goodell hug? So the hugs.
Matt Jones
Thinking about that.
Myron Metcalf
The hugs are getting longer. Yes. It's chest to chest. Yes. They just met and he acts like he's their father. And I'm. I think Roger, less hugging.
Matt Jones
Yeah. But I mean, brothers are gonna hug you in that moment. Like, you don't have a choice. Like, I don't know. Once you get pulled in for a hug, you're just in the hug. Now my thing on a hug, Matt was there was a draft pick early in draft who did the hug and then rubbed the back of Rob. So where are you? So for me, I'm all fine if you hug me. And we just met. The back rubbing is not where we're at now. That, that, that's not a part of our relationship.
Myron Metcalf
I just feel like. I do feel like the hugs are getting longer for Rock. Yeah. Like, I mean, I feel like the back rubbing's extra.
Matt Jones
We don't know each other that well. You to rub my back during the hook.
Myron Metcalf
Roger used to just shake their hands and it's gotten.
Matt Jones
And it's brother's gonna pull you in for a hug. You can't do anything about that.
Myron Metcalf
Nothing you can do about it.
Matt Jones
Not at all.
Myron Metcalf
Right. I will keep that. I'll keep that in mind more as we get ready for the NBA playoffs next here on Matt.
Matt Jones
