Matt
Stewart was exactly like you saw him on camera, off camera. He dialed it up 10%. Can you imagine the impact of young.
James
Black boys and girls looking at that.
Matt
Going, I feel seen.
Myron
He changed the culture. He changed sports stream. Booyah. Presented by Modelo right now on the ESPN app.
Matt
This is Matt and Myron, the podcast.
James
I have a present for you, by the way. I'm glad they played that clip. Someone brought into me a present someone brought into my bar in Lexington. A Franklin doll still in the package. A Franklin doll to give you. So I have a Franklin from Charlie Brown doll that someone found. Now, I will say they found it at the. At the dollar tree, but they. A dollar tree Franklin doll and asked me to give it to you. So I have it in Lexington at the bar.
Matt
Okay. That's a gift. Okay.
James
I guess it's a nice gift for a stranger to bring.
Matt
I didn't know he was real. I didn't know it was real a month ago. So, I mean, the fact that there's a doll is. Is pretty cool to know. So I appreciate it.
James
I feel like that would be a good piece of memorabilia for you to have on your desk. And people go, what's. What's that? And you say, that's Franklin.
Matt
And they'd be like, there wasn't a black character. We wouldn't know. They would know.
James
They'd be like, I didn't watch, by the way. I watched the Christmas episode. You know, the famous Christmas episode that always has the dancing where the guy dances and like all that. Franklin's not in that one.
Matt
My theory is that maybe Franklin saw them dancing, was like, nah, I'm out. I can't be involved in whatever they got going on right here. So he just got of stepped out of the scene. You know, he's like, I don't know what they're doing, but I don't. I'm not in this.
James
I don't want to be part of all these white people tiktoks at Christmas where they're doing.
Matt
I'm not involved in this one.
James
Ravens and Steelers tonight for the AFC north title. It's for the four seed and it's for the playoffs. It's exactly what you would want if you're an NFL fan. First of all, what I think has been the best rivalry in football in the last 30 years, the Ravens and the Steelers across many quarterbacks, across many generations. I think Raven Steelers has been the best and I'm a Bears fan but I would put Raven Steelers over Bears packers. Secondly, it's a perfect scenario that you don't get a lot. When you're in lose, you're out. That simple. Not, not. No, not hard at all. When you're in lose, you're out. Myron. This I think is exactly what the NFL would want. I am really excited for this game and I don't you, you know I get excited for big games but normally week 18, eh, this one gets my juices going. Are you excited?
Matt
Yeah. I mean it's high stakes football. I mean last night you had the battle for the one seed, you had the Panthers bucks and now you're going to end the regular season with two historic franchises. Two. Two of the most recognizable franchises. I, I think in all the sports for different reasons. Lamar Jackson announces he's coming back. I think the loser of this game. It's beyond not being in the playoffs, Matt. It's what happens next. Whether that's John Harbaugh, whether that's Tomlin, you know what happens for a second.
James
Let's just think about, okay coaches, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, the loser of this game is going to face the wrath of a fan base. Whichever one it is. Whether it's the Steelers with Mike Tomlin or it's the Ravens with John Harbaugh. The quarterbacks, there's a decent argument. Aaron Rodgers probably going to retire at the end of this and then Lamar Jackson, you know there, if he doesn't make the playoffs, there's going to be real questions about his future just as an elite NFL quarterback. So you're right, there's a lot at stake tonight.
Matt
Yeah, I mean both franchises could go in completely different directions after this. Not the Steelers don't fire coaches. We know that what Mike Tomlin has done 19 consecutive 500 better seasons. I don't know if people understand how remarkable that is, but I think Steelers fans are more focused on how long it's been since they actually competed for a Super Bowl. So it's gonna be interesting to see.
James
What'S game nine years since they've won a playoff game.
Matt
And that's real, you know, I mean do you want to just be in the mix or do you want to compete? I think Mike Tomlin's argument would be name the franchise quarterback he's had in, in the post big band Roethlisberger era. So I don't know where they go, but I can certainly see both franchises moving in different directions. Lamar Jackson has a $75 million cap hit next year, so their only choice, really, Matt, is to extend him and move some of that money around or trade them. So who knows what happens there. I don't think a trade is likely, but it wouldn't be surprising me if Lamar Jackson had a new coach next year.
James
Yeah, it's amazing. How much is it now for the actual game? Derrick Henry looked unbelievable last week. Just one of the better performances we've seen by running back in years. And now he's in what, season nine, still doing this. It's, it's kind of remarkable for a running back, especially a guy that runs like him, to have the success that he's had. And now you get in this game with Aaron Rodgers where at times in the last seven or eight weeks he's looked pretty good. But then I think last week had some moments where he looked like a 40 plus year old quarterback. He's had a lot of drops. The receivers did him no favors last week. How do you see this one playing out?
Matt
I think if the Steelers miss this, it'll be DK Metcalf suspension that probably plays a role. I thought Aaron Rodgers threw a lot of passes that DK Metcalf would have caught, you know, had he not gone after a fan and gotten himself suspended for two games. So I think that could go down as one of the most back breaking suspensions for that organization. Because of what he asked.
James
Do you blame DK for that loss last week, him being suspended?
Matt
Yeah, and I blame, I blame him for this one too. I mean, at the end of the day, there were a lot of rumors about what was said by the fan. Like my thing with that is the people who are initially saying that he said something really, really, really terrible that made people go, okay, well maybe it's justified. And then you find out that wasn't the case. But like DK Metcalf can't go into the stands and throw a punch at a dude in that circumstance. Like, you just, you just can't do it, especially in that situation. And I think it could cost his team today the way it's cost him last week too.
James
Two things can be correct. On the one hand, that dude can be a complete goober. His press conference sounds like he wore a hat backwards.
Matt
Yeah, just.
James
Yeah, you know, come on, man. There's an age, and I think it's about 25, where you have to stop wearing your hat backwards, certainly in public appearances. But then second, he can be a goober and you still can't Go in the stands and punch him with two games left in the season. Like, I think those, those can both be true.
Matt
Yeah, you just, you just can. And again, I, I, I don't know what exactly he said. I, I'm, I'm against, you know, these fans who think they can do anything and say anything to players. Like, I do think there are consequences to that. But DK Mech has to be smarter and he just put his team in a really tough spot. That could really lead to Mike Tomlin not being a part of the organization, trying to figure out.
James
Let's talk about that. Let's talk about the various scenarios. All right, so let's, let's start with Baltimore wins and Pittsburgh loses. Ryan Clark, ESPN's NFL, was on First Take. Here's what he said might happen in that situation.
Ryan Clark
Mike Tomlin leads the New York Giants to playoffs with Fernando Mendoza. I don't know who the quarterback's going to be.
Myron
Wow.
James
That's a. Wow.
Matt
That is both.
Jeremy Fowler
So some mutual parting ways.
Ryan Clark
Mutual parting of ways after they lose to the Ravens this weekend. The Rooney Mara family, like that, they're extreme, obviously. And so because of that, Mike Tomlin's now the new head coach of the New York Giants. You want to make a splash, you want to get the right guy, you want to change the culture. That's the way to do it.
James
By the way, the Rooney family is not extreme. They've had three coaches in 45 years. So I would disagree with Ryan Clark on that. But the conclusion is an interesting one. Now let's go the other way. Let's say the Steelers win and the Ravens lose. Jeremy Fowler, ESPN NFL Insider, said this about Lamar's future.
Unnamed NFL Insider
So Lamar Jackson, his future is interesting because he's got a $75 million cap hit. The guaranteed money on his long term deal is drying out. So the Ravens have a decision to make here. Do they want to continue to negotiate, try to hammer out a long term deal on a market that would be massive for a player of his caliber with a two time mvp. There are questions about, about how they're going to handle this because they haven't won big with Jackson yet. Most people I've talked to say that, look, the Ravens know they're better off with Jackson than without, but it's going to be costly either way. They got to sort that out.
James
All right, so let's go get your ink pen out again, James, that we use for the Super Bowl. In the ink pen you wrote Seahawks, Jaguars, I'm going to give you some names. You're going to tell me what they're going to be doing next season. Let's go, let's start. Mike Tomlin, what's he doing next season?
Matt
He's working for ESPN on tv.
James
Okay, I like that. Aaron Rodgers, what's he doing next season?
Matt
He starts a conspiracy theory podcast.
James
Okay. Yeah, I like the odds of that one. Lamar Jackson, what's he doing next season?
Matt
Collecting the new money from his new gigantic extension that the Ravens have just given him. Because there's just no way you can let a two time MVP go if you, if you're the Ravens, there's no options.
James
And John Harbaugh, what's he doing next.
Matt
Season if they win tonight? He's still, I think the head coach of the Ravens. If they lose, I think he's probably on the sidelines with Jim and with the Chargers kind of hanging out for a year before he gets back into coaching.
James
All right, there you go. Those were your predictions now all written down in ink pen by James as to where four major figures in the NFL their futures could be decided tonight on Sunday Night Football. I don't know that you could have a better end of season game. There's a lot going on all around the world of sports, not just in the NFL. We give it to you in headlines. That's next here on Matt Meyer.

Matt
The Sunday headlines.
James
That's exactly right. It is time for Sunday headlines and there is no better place than to look. Look all around the world of sports. James was gone last week. He is back. So let us know what what the news around sports is.
Jeremy Fowler
All right. The ACC has issued a public reprimand of Micah Shrewsbury following an incident between the Notre Dame coach and an official at the end of the Fighting Irish's loss to California on Friday. Notre Dame had a three point lead in final seconds. Logan Imus was called for a foul on Calgary. Die. Die.
Myron
Ames.
Jeremy Fowler
While Ames was made a three pointer. Ames completed the four point play. The Golden Bears held on for a 72 to 71 win at the final buzzer. Shrewsbury charged after the official but was intercepted and held back.
James
Well, he didn't just charge, he looked like a bull that was not about to be tamed. If you've not seen this, it was a wild play. With Notre Dame up three foul on a three. It was a bad call. He makes the shot and the free throw. Notre Dame loses. But Shrewsbury loses his mind. And the angle is crazy. The coaches barely caught him from maybe tackling an official. All the ACC did Myon was give him a reprimand. Didn't you think that was maybe, maybe he deserved a little more?
Matt
Well, I mean they gave him a public reprimand, but we don't know what happened behind the scenes. And I think what's more important for Michael Shoesbury is those are the kinds of situations where, especially when you don't have a team that's competitive and not going to be a tournament team most likely and people see that that's just an easy way to lose your job. You know, the combination of those two things, he has to be smarter than that. He has to have some measure of poison. My thing is like, if he gets to him, what are you going to do? Are you really going to fight and ruin your career? Like you're going to end your career like that. It just, it was all bizarre, man. But the call was weird.
James
Have you ever seen, I mean, luckily for him the game was not high profile. I don't think many people saw it, but have you ever seen a coach that out of control? I can't think of one. Have you?
Matt
No, we. What you see is the coaches who do the hold me back thing where like they're yelling but they have no intention of ever getting anywhere near the official. Shrewsbury was like charging toward him. He's a big dude, you know, and.
James
It just was like big dude.
Matt
Yeah, it was odd.
Unnamed NFL Insider
Yeah.
Matt
I mean that's the kind of thing where a school says you don't represent who we are and just put you in a bad situation.
James
I agree. What's next?
Jeremy Fowler
All right, let's stick with basketball. Golden State warriors for Draymond Green was injected late in the second quarter Saturday night after vehemently arguing for a three second violation against the.
James
What word did you say?
Jeremy Fowler
I'm not.
James
Say it again.
Jeremy Fowler
Vehemently.
Commercial Announcer 2
Vehemently.
Jeremy Fowler
Yeah, that's it.
Myron
I couldn't find it.
James
Did you say vehemently?
Jeremy Fowler
Vehemently.
Matt
Yeah, vehemently.
James
Vehemently. Now you made to where? I don't know if I can read it.
Matt
See, no one knows.
Jeremy Fowler
We don't.
Matt
Vehemently.
Jeremy Fowler
I read it.
Matt
Yeah, vehemently.
Jeremy Fowler
Whenever I was reading it.
James
Have you ever said that word before?
Jeremy Fowler
I don't know if I've ever said it out loud.
James
Well, then why did you write it down? Why would you write down a word?
Matt
Yeah, why did you put that in your script?
James
Why didn't you just say forcefully, like. Why did you say vehemently if you'd never said the word?
Jeremy Fowler
I wasn't thinking about it.
James
I've written it. I've written it.
Jeremy Fowler
I've read it.
James
James, maybe in the future you read out the thing.
Jeremy Fowler
I didn't read it out loud. I read it in my head.
Matt
Don't let Matt convince. You gotta use all those law and order words that he uses, like vehemently. You don't have to match it.
James
I mean, I just think when you. When you go on national radio and you go vehement. Lou.
Matt
Like, you just need to practice the.
James
Word before you say it.
Jeremy Fowler
I read it, but I read it in my brain. I just didn't read it out loud whenever I tried.
Matt
James, I was in those classes too, man. It's all good. You gotta expl.
James
Nothing.
Jeremy Fowler
Despite what you guys think, I am, I am, like, pretty smart, but also, I'm a yinzer and I can't say things very good.
James
So.
Matt
James, no, we. James, I get it. Don't let. Don't let LA Law or whatever over here tell. You got to use.
Jeremy Fowler
There's a difference between saying it out loud and reading it in your head. And I just found that out.
Matt
That's what those teachers told me, too. That's what they told me, too. And I was Draymond.
Jeremy Fowler
So he vehemently argued for a three second violation against the Jazz. It was Green second injection in the face. In the past eight games, the warriors won 123, 114 on Saturday night, but again, ejected. What do you guys think?
Matt
So I thought this Thing about Aaron Rodgers, too. In this, the last three to five years of Aaron Rodgers career, I thought he ruined his post football. I think Draymond Green is doing something similar now. He's always going to have his streaming thing, but, like, I think this dude was set up to be this incredible media star after basketball, and I just feel like he continues to put himself in a spot where people aren't going to want to hear from him. You know, I think he thinks he's going to be the next Barkley in the media world, but he's not that because he's just losing all the likability element if he ever had that with the things he's doing at this stage in his career.
James
Aaron Rodgers, I think, has oddly been relatively quiet this year, which means Draymond has passed him for most annoying player in sports. To me, he is the. I find him not at all likable. Not even a little likable. I went to a game, I guess Monday night, I went to the Brooklyn Nets versus Golden State, and I got to see Draymond in person. First of all, two things. Steph in person. Everybody ought to see it. It's really an amazing thing to watch Draymond in person. If you want to have a similar experience, just go to the dry cleaner and, like, stand there and listen to the thing run for eight straight hours. That's essentially what it's like being watching Draymond. He complains at everything. He's a dirty player and he's annoying. And there comes a point at the end of the game that even if you didn't know who he was, you would go, that's the least likable person on the court. And he does the same thing. If there's a fight between Draymond and somebody else, I'm always taking the other guy's side. Naturally. Myron. Yeah.
Matt
I mean, again, I think he was sort of set up to do whatever he wanted to do after basketball, and I think that was sort of the plan, and maybe it still is the plan. I just think this stage of his career has been mostly embarrassing.
James
Most annoying. He's. He's too old to act the way he does.
Matt
He's not good enough for people to talk, tolerate it either.
James
Except he's going to go to the hall of Fame, and he's not even good. What's next?
Matt
No, he's got. He's great. Now that he deserves the hall of Fame, that's not the question. But his behavior matters.
James
Go ahead.
Matt
One of the best defenders of all Time that's valid.
Myron
Camille.
Jeremy Fowler
One of the defenders, Camille Rast, ended Michaela Shifrin six race winning streak in World cup slaloms on Sunday, meaning the American star by 0.14 seconds after clocking the fastest time in both runs at an event in Slovenia. Rast, who is the slalom world champion, also led Shiffrin last week in Austria after the first leg. But the American made up more than a half a second on a deteriorating course to narrowly take the win. I know Myron's huge into the slaloms.
James
Well, I brought that.
Matt
Yes. Look.
James
So here's the thing. Forget about these two in the slalom. Like, who knows? I don't even know. I'm not sure what the slalom is. But I will say this. The Winter Olympics are coming. Myron, do you like the Winter Olympics?
Matt
When are they coming? What do you mean?
James
In February. Like, it's. They're coming soon. They're in Italy.
Matt
They've heard about it coming back. No, I didn't.
Myron
Not.
James
Yeah, it's the last month. It's gonna. I think it starts in like a month.
Matt
Oh, okay. Yeah. Congrats, man. All the bob's letters. Okay. I didn't know. Okay.
James
Congrats to him.
Matt
Yeah, that'll be fun. You don't care about.
James
It's in. It's in Torino, Turin.
Matt
In Italy, they got snow. That means there no snow. Over there they have that.
James
That's in the Alps. They have snow, you know, some.
Matt
Okay, well, not to be fun. I like the ski jump, people. I watch the ski jump.
James
So what are the events you enjoy. You enjoy the ski jump? Do you like the box lead in the loot? What about the luge?
Matt
The Lou. That's like the one. The single bobsled. Right.
James
First and then there's the skeleton where they go head first.
Matt
Yeah, I like all those. I'm into the figure skating. I think hopefully no Russian judges. That's just a personal thing, but I mean. Yeah, it'll be. It'll be fine. Hockey.
James
Do you. Do you like. Hockey's gonna be great. I mean, all the NHL guys are playing, right? What? Yes. What about the biathlon where they have ski and then half shoot guns? They.
Matt
They just made that up. You know, you don't have to do all that. Nobody's doing that in the real world. You're not John Wick. Nobody's on. Nobody in the history world was on skis shooting that stuff.
James
Yes, they were. That's how they killed prey. That like. That's how they killed prey. They would ski around that's what they.
Matt
Told you in the history but none.
James
Of it would shoot it.
Matt
They made the whole thing up.
James
You don't think anyone has ever skied and shot a gun?
Matt
They that that's not happening. It's no one's doing that. So I get rid of that event. But I like the other ones also don't give like the Sweden's a whole lot of credit when they win stuff. They got all the snow. I'm not impressed. When they win stuff you're supposed to.
James
All right, well there you go. There's your Winter Olympic preview with Myron Metcalf. More NFL next here. I met Myron.
Myron

Matt and Myron, the podcast.
James
You can go your own way and Myron do here on ESPN Radio, presented by progressive. Com Insurance. Is this Fleetwood Mac? James? Is that right? Is that who sings this?
Matt
There's the Eagles. Yeah, it is. It's the Eagles. No, it's Fleetwood Mac.
James
You think everybody's the Eagles.
Matt
You are some of the Eagles in Fleetwood Mac. This is.
James
First of all, no, there was some.
Matt
Of the Eagles in Fleetwood Mac, wasn't there? Like a.
James
Don't just say words. None of them were. None of that is true. The Eagles had. Were. Were. It was a man and a woman, a couple men and a woman. That was. The Eagles are like G. Glenn Fry and. I don't know.
Matt
There was no, like, Avengers meetup thing. I didn't realize it.
James
No, they did. They didn't. They didn't do that. By the way, you earlier today picked the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl. I mocked you. I'll tell you why. Maybe I shouldn't. Here are the current super bowl odds. The six favorite. The New England Patriots at plus 1100. The Bills are plus 1000. Eagles are plus 850. Broncos plus 850. Rams plus 490 are the second favorite and the favorite on the betting odds. The Seattle Seahawks plus 440. Are you surprised? Like, I'm shocked that Patriots are plus 1100 and the Seahawks are plus 440?
Matt
Yeah, I mean, I think what the Seahawks did probably changed a lot of people's minds and kind of put them in a spot where they feel like, okay, if you can stop a Niners offense that was as hot as any we've seen, they can do that against anybody. And I think that, to me, is why people are probably higher on the Seahawks today than they were even a couple days ago.
James
One of the teams not on that list actually is the Bears, who have a chance to be the 2 seed today if they can beat the Detroit Lions. The Bears have been really an amazing story. They've won five games where they were losing in the last two minutes of the game. Caleb Williams has now Set the record for fewest interceptions by quarterback in his first thousand passes. You know, I am a pessimistic Bears fan, meaning, like I expect the worst. And so it's hard for me to embrace this feeling of success. Even in their loss last week to the 49ers, I felt really good about it. Came down the final play, if the. If the throws a little better, they probably win the game. I'm excited about the Bears this season. I don't think they'll win the super bowl, but I Do you think I should have confidence that they win today and then maybe win a round or two in the super. In the playoffs?
Matt
No guarantees either way. I mean, I think to me that's a tough game, man, against a Lions team that wants to go out on a good note, wants to send Dan Campbell out on a good note. Obviously didn't have as much success as they had a year ago. And I think if you're the Bears man, this is. That's the team where what happens today could determine whether or not they're in a position to win a game. I think if you host a Packers team where we don't know if Jordan Love is going to be healthy, they got a bunch of receivers banged up. They don't have a bunch of defensive guys versus maybe playing a frustrated 49ers team or Rams team that you think could be the best team in the NFC in that opening round. Like that, to me, is why today matters so much for this entire playoff picture for the. For the Bears.
James
Commanders play the Eagles. Now, if the Bears lose and the Eagles win, then they would be the two seed. But it doesn't seem like the Eagles are going to play their starters. At least that's what the sense has been. I find that baffling. Meyer, the Bears have a chance to lose. I mean, the Lions are certainly a team that can win the game they won last week. Why do you think the Eagles would not play? Nick Sirianni said, at the end of the day, it's not a guarantee that we get to the two seed, but I can rest the starters and guarantee that we are healthy. I just thought the best thing for our football team was that right there. Do you agree with that?
Matt
I mean, that doesn't. That would make sense in a lot of situations. I think what Nick Sirianni is saying is I don't think any of these teams can beat us in the playoffs. I mean, I think that's essentially how.
James
We feel used on the Bears apply to them. I mean, wouldn't The Eagles much prefer to play a Packers team that's depleted than to have to play, potentially, the rams or the 49ers in the first round.
Matt
Two completely different situations. The Eagles have a ring. The Eagles have been to multiple Super Bowls under this quarterback, under this regime, and the Bears have proven nothing. So I think the Eagles are, more than anyone, probably understand the value of rest. Like, you're not going to get the buy. So it's almost like they're creating a buy for their players by resting them going into the playoffs. And I don't think they're intimidated by anything that they will face the rest of the way. Whereas I think the Bears just have a situation where who they play could determine everything for them next week.
James
I don't understand, though, why that analysis is not the same for both of them. I mean, I agree with you that playing the packers is a much easier draw than playing, say, the 49ers. But I don't agree with you, though, that that wouldn't also apply to the Eagles. I mean, if you're the Eagles, for instance, and you get a schedule where you play the packers in the first round and then you play the Bears or the 49ers in the second to get to go to the NFC championship and you're hosting both those games, I think you'd feel pretty good about where you are. Whereas if you're the 3 seed and you have to play the 49ers or the Rams and then have to go to Chicago, I don't know that that's nearly as good a draw for you, do you?
Matt
They don't care. I think Nick Sirian is saying, we don't care where we play, who we play in the nfc.
James
They're good enough to have that attitude.
Matt
I think they're good enough to be confident. Like who? Who intimidate. If you're the Eagles, name the team that intimidates you. You have a Seattle team that is the number one seed and what feels like one of the weaker years for the nfc. I think people feel like Seattle's a really good team right now. A lot of people are going, we can get to Sam Darnold, force him into some big turnovers, and you can beat that team. The Bears haven't proven anything, and you know, that defense is not good enough, I don't think, to win a Super Bowl. The Buccaneers are Panthers. Take your pick. You could combine those teams and I wouldn't feel like they could win a game in advance. The Niners only have an offense. I know But I'm just saying, in terms of the whole picture, in terms of the entire picture, the Niners have no defense. The Rams are hot and cold, depending on the day, and the packers are all injured. So I think Nick Sirianni is saying, I'm going to give my team rest, my top guys rest, because we're not going to get the buy. And it doesn't matter what happens from here, because they're confident they can beat anybody anywhere.
James
So when you picked your super bowl, you didn't include the Eagles. Jalen hurts through for, I believe, James. Let's count the yards he threw for in the second half. Was it last week? Was it zero? I think that's the amount of yard. Yeah. Yeah, there was. It was zero plus zero, so it equaled zero. Why should they have confidence they're going to beat anyone?
Matt
Because they can play a style. You know, I'm a big boxing fan, right? And there are these fighters over the.
James
History of sport, big Jake Paul fans.
Matt
Yeah, well, don't. Don't say that. Who can just fight really ugly. Bernard Hopkins, Pernell Whitaker. These guys who could just fight kind of an ugly, awkward style and still find ways to win. And I think, to me, the way the Eagles play is probably the most reliable style. They can win ugly. They did it to Buffalo. They could run the ball, control the clock, and put you in a position where, okay, it's a close game down the stretch, and you trust them in those situations because they've made those plays before. That, to me, is what makes me feel like Philly can advance to another Super Bowl. This NFC isn't as good as last year's nfc, and they came out of that. There's no team as good as the Kansas City team that they beat in the afc. So I just think Nick Sirianni is saying, we did it in a much more difficult climate. Why would you be intimidated by anything?
James
I understand that. And there's an argument that they've accomplished more than any of the teams in it so far. I just. I can't believe you would sit your starters against a commander's team. Now, maybe you believe you can beat your command, the commanders, with your backups, and if that's the case and they win, then I think it ends up being a great chance. But if you lose to this commander's team, that will be, I think, an epic mistake by Sirianni. Maybe they'll win anyway. You mentioned, by the way, that you're a boxing fan. I'm going to show on the screen here A book. This is a book I think you would like. It's called Headshot. I just finished it a couple days ago. It's about a women's boxing tournament. Myron and I thought when I read it, Myron would like this because he has a book club. And it is about. It's got. It's not just about boxing, but it's about boxing, some of it. It was long listed for the Booker Prize. That's exciting, right? And is it fiction? Shot. It's fiction, yes.
Matt
Okay.
James
By Rita Bullwinkle, which you. So this is my New Year's book recommendation to you. Headshot.
Matt
Headshots. Headshots. Rita Bullwinkle. Okay.
James
Headshot. Not. Not. It's a singular. It's not a plural head.
Matt
Headshot. Rita Bullwinkle. Okay. I put it on my list, man.
James
What else is on your list?
Matt
Oh, I'm reading a bunch of books. I got a bunch of stuff on.
James
My list right now. Just for. Just for the list.
Matt
I'm reading a book about James Baldwin right now. I'm reading like this.
James
Oh, is it the one with his face on it called Baldwin?
Matt
It's called James A Love Story. Yeah, that one. Yeah, I'm reading that. Yeah.
James
No, that's very good. I've read it. Yeah.
Matt
You.
James
I'm glad you.
Matt
Oh, you read it.
James
I like. Yes, I have. You. Listen, I'm James Baldwin. That's a great book. That's like, all the people he dated and stuff, like how it factored into his life.
Matt
Yeah, Very, very, very good.
James
So, anyway, you probably won't hear a lot about James Baldwin on ESPN Radio, but we will continue to look ahead to the final week of the NFL season. Lots of games, lots of storylines, playoff seeds at stake. That's here on Matt Myron on ESPN Radio.
Matt
Matt and Myron, the podcast.
James
Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Beautiful Sunday. What's the weather like there in Minneapolis, Myron? Is it nice? Cold in Minnesota, but I mean, sunny like you got. Is it a good day to go walking around and seeing the sights? What do you mean?
Matt
It's January, Minnesota. There's no. Sun's not out. It's cold, man. Yeah, it's not.
James
Maybe. I mean, I thought you might be in. You seem like you were in a pleasant mood, so I thought there might be. There might be a reason.
Matt
The people. The people who run in this weather, I can't stand now. The people who want to prove to you that they can handle cold weather and still run a little 5k. I can't stand it. I just.
James
You don't like them. You don't like people who run.
Matt
I think 5k people always tell you that they're running a 5k. Who cares? It's a fast walk, you know what I mean? And they want us to pat them on the back.
James
What's the amount you. What's the amount of running you respect?
Matt
I think once you hit me, once you hit the 10 miler thing, that's, that's intense. But I mean, the five though.
James
I mean 10 miles is a. Is a long time, man.
Matt
Every. Everybody runs a 5k. Wants to post about this 5k they've been training for. It's like you just walking. I don't have it over a walk.
James
All the time for a 5K.
Matt
I think that's all that they tell you about it all day.
James
I think that, like, for fun. For fun, like I ran the turkey leg or something like that. They're just trying to have fun.
Matt
You, you become their whole identity.
James
I will tell you what I think is going to be fun today, which is looking to see who will get the first pick. The Chiefs play the Raiders today. If the Raiders lose, they will get the number one overall pick. They also can win, can get the number one pick if a lot of various teams lose. I won't go through all the scenarios. If, however, the Raiders win against the Chiefs, which is possible, then the Giants have a chance to get the number one pick. If the Raiders lose. Now, I ask you some version of this question quite a bit, but would you lose today if you were the Raiders or if the Raiders win, if you were the Giants, would you lose on purpose?
Matt
Yeah, I mean, I would, you know.
James
You would lose on purpose.
Matt
I mean, in a way, like you.
James
Get out on the field, you get. But you get out on the field, you're not like, like, what difference is it to you if the franchise gets the number one pick?
Matt
Yeah, I mean, as players. No, I mean as players, you just going to play the game, but as, as like coaches. Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm calling.
James
But both these coaches dance may be gone. So, like, why would they care? Like if you're Pete Carroll, first of all, do you think Pete Carroll is back?
Matt
That's a good question. I mean, it sounds like it's not a guarantee to me. The problem with Pete Carroll is if you get the number one pick, I could see the situation where it's like, oh, we're not going to let him guide this new quarterback.
James
Well, there's reports out there that they're not bringing him back.
Matt
Yeah, I mean, I understand the idea of, like, why help the team and all, but you don't know you're not going to be back. So I'd want to put myself in the best possible spot in that scenario that I'm back. So, yeah, I'd lose. I call plays that I'd never called before. Like, I would call stuff that, you know, we'd never done all season. High risk.
James
But would you want to whip? But I would think Pete Carroll, especially if his career is about to end, would love to win, like a win one for the Gipper kind of thing, wouldn't you?
Matt
I said, if I'm the owner of the team, I'm coming down and tapping them on the shoulder and saying, you know what to do. You know, I'm like, what the. In the Karate Kid where he says, sweep the leg. Like, that's. That's the conversation we're having with him. Like, you know, it's, you know, what you have to do, you know?
James
Yeah. Well, I agree with you. Although I don't think he has any incentive to do that now. If the Raiders were to win after the games you saw, etc. Is Mendoza the future of that franchise?
Matt
Whenever I hear about Mendoza, you know what people say? He's tall.
James
What?
Matt
Like, tell me something you've heard about Mendoza as an NFL prospect.
James
He's smart. He's. I don't think that's fair. He's. He makes great decisions. He's got a good arm. He seems like a really good leader. It does seem to me, I think PM commenter said he looks like he's a quarterback created from Jack Chat GPT in the sense that, like, when his interviews, they're all kind of like, this is a great game. I am looking into the camera. I am staring into your soul. There is a little bit of that. But with that said, I think he seems like a safe pick. So I think of the quarterbacks I've seen, he makes the most sense to me.
Matt
The intangibles are certainly there. I mean, you've seen the leadership qualities. Winning the Heisman, bringing Indiana potentially to a national championship. He's. He's gonna get a statue at Indiana no matter what happens from here. But I also think we haven't heard a ton about his ability to be a franchise quarterback. So the weird thing about this race for the number one spot is it doesn't feel like the years where there was a quarterback or two at the top of the draft, where you Felt like this dude is a franchise star. This is your quarterback for the next decade or more. Mendoza.
James
Pretty good. About Mendoza, those things over the years when I've seen first pick quarterbacks that I was a little concerned about their success. A common denominator is that they usually either A played for a team that didn't win or B, played for a superstar team where they were surrounded by draft picks and so they could look really good. Neither of those is true. With him, they win, but he's not surrounded by NFL talent. He's not surrounded by a ton of guys that are going to play on Sundays. So I give him a ton of the credit for the success. And I don't know how you can't believe in him at the next level.
Matt
No, everything he said is valid. I mean, again, that's why he won the Heisman Trophy and what he did at Indiana, there's a 30 for 30. I'm sure somebody's already started about Mendoza and everything that comes with that. I'm not saying he won't be a good prospect. I'm saying this is such a weak quarterback class because remember we started saying Arch Manning could be at the top of this class. All these other guys were going to be great quarterback prospects. There were going to be seven or eight guys that NFL teams could choose from who could be the faces of their franchises. And we settled on the reality that there's two guys in this draft, Mendoza and Dante Moore at Oregon, who people feel like can be legit prospects at the next level.
James
Chris Canty from Unsportsmanlike. He made a comment that I thought was interesting. He said he thought it would be a big gamble for the Giants to keep Jackson Dart and to not draft Mendoza if they got the number one pick that he would, he would actually. I don't know if he'd get rid of Dart or just overtake him, but that he would have Mendoza as, as the number one pick of the Giants, which. What would you do in that scenario?
Matt
I mean, I don't know how you give up on Jackson Dart at this. I think I look at Jackson Dart and I say, put him with a capable coaching staff and let's see what happens. I don't think you can just bail on a guy who has had some promise. The concussions were his biggest.
James
He has had some, some points and he lost. Scatter.
Matt
Scatter. Boo.
James
And he lost. You know, he, he also. There, there. They've come close. You would talk about loot winning close games. They've lost some close games. That Easily. They could have won earlier in the year.
Matt
Yeah, they've been a lot of tough situations. Right. But I think a young quarterback like that, you have to say what we just saw with Drake may should be the example for all these teams. Drake Ray Drake Mays with Gerard Mayo who's like, he's the best quarterback on my team but I'm not going to start him. So he's clearly with the staff that just didn't know what to do with him. Then you bring in Mike Vrabel and you bring in Josh McDaniel and all these guys who know what they're doing. And now we're talking about Drake May potentially as an mvp. So I think Jackson Dart should be allowed to develop under a capable coaching staff. And then you judge him from there. I don't think you just go to Mendoza. I think you trade the pick. If you get number one, you trade it and see what else you can get to surround.
James
I'm fascinated. Here's what I'm fascinated about. The NFL in the NBA and to some extent in the NHL. When it gets to the end of the season, the amount of tanking is obvious. And it's obvious. Even though there's a lottery which doesn't even guarantee you'll get the first pick, teams will tank and they'll be blatant about it. In the NFL where there is no lottery and losing will guarantee you the first pick. They don't lose on purpose. That's amazing to me. Yeah, it's an amazing difference in the way these sports look at it. And especially when it comes to quarterback. It might matter just as much in the NFL, yet they will not tank in general. And it makes very little sense to me. Now if you listen to this show, you know the next segment we do, King of the Mountain. We look for a person who has the best take of the week. 30 seconds or less brings. It either entertains or makes us think. And it's now time. 888 say ESPN.
