Matt Jones
This is Matt and Myron. The Podcast.
Myron Metcalf
I'm ready to play football. I've been waiting a long time for this, Mom.
Cassidy
Time is here, time is now.
Matt Jones
This is the countdown to kickoff on ESPN Radio.
Mark Kester
It is C to Kickoff here on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Tune in for a football double header today. Colts hold, the Colts host the Lions, followed by the Broncos and the Raiders. Coverage begins at noon Eastern on select ESPN Radio stations. Mark Kester is with ESPN Radio. He's doing the play by play for the lines at the Colts. Mark, you were, you were calling a college game. Where were you yesterday?
Herm Edwards
I was a pretty good one yesterday, guys, over at Ohio State for Ohio State. Indiana. Leave it on paper and good for a quarter day.
Mark Kester
It's going to make me seem like I'm railing on Indiana, just not just the state as a whole, but I didn't think Indiana looked great. But let's talk about Indianapolis, where you are for just a second. I take the view that Indianapolis is the Applebee's of cities. Like, it's fine.
Myron Metcalf
I'll stop it, man.
Mark Kester
Like, like it's fine. Like every time you go into an Applebee's, you're like, fine. You can get something decent, but it's kind of generic and like, and it's nothing to write home about. You travel as much as anyone in the country and go to cities. Am I right that Indianapolis is the Applebee's of cities?
Herm Edwards
I have to continue to travel to these cities. So I will be very political that I appreciate Indianapolis and here's why. You know, there are so many cities that we go to that often, you know, restaurants are closing, you know, after, you know, six, seven o'clock and on the weekends maybe the carpet rolls up in those towns. I cannot tell you how busy Indianapolis was last night. And you couldn't move one inch without bumping into 17 Lions fans. I mean, this fan base is so electrified and exciting. You know, I think our hotel was on the edges of the city because we couldn't find rooms, which is almost impossible in downtown Indianapolis. All the conventions and sports events they have here. So however we want to relate the city to, I'm good with it because we got a good meal last night.
Mark Kester
I Will know.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Mark Kester
Applebe. Applebee's is crowded, too. I'll just leave it at that.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Stop it. Now.
Mark Kester
Stop.
Myron Metcalf
Now, now, stop. I mean, you got the best steak in America.
Herm Edwards
St. Elmo's good and stirring things up.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I hope you went to St. Elmo's, get the best steak in America. A lot of great things happening.
Mark Kester
Stop it.
Herm Edwards
I didn't have with me last night, so it was not.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, yeah, yeah. Pj. Pj Definitely get you there. It's interesting, Cassie. Dan Campbell, not that long ago, was viral for all the wrong reasons. Biting kneecaps and all these things he said where people thought, okay, this guy maybe is a joke, right? What is he doing being a head coach when he's saying these things? Now all of a sudden, his personality seems to be the best thing about him, and it's affecting this team. How is the perspective on Dan Campbell changed over this last year, Cassidy?
Herm Edwards
Yeah, and I think really, it's in the last four years. I'm with you because I, you know, hadn't paid attention. I, you know, you kind of knew him as a bit player and then as an assistant coach, and it seemed very aggressive. And now you go back and you look at some of that stuff and what he was saying and how he was teaching, and you realize that it's a player's coach who's really smart in what he does and an organization that is assembled some really nice pieces that play together. I mean, even just think of the quarterback trade, the Stafford trade in golf a few years ago. You're just trying to figure out where all this is going. And now you see the fruits of everything they've done, the guys they've drafted, how they built, you know, in stages and how close they got last year and, you know, were denied. And now, you know, all of a sudden, you look up and you see Kansas City lose last week, and you're just like, you know what? This might be one of the best teams in the National Football League. And, you know, I have friends that, you know, were lion stands, older friends, you know, from the 50s who would tell me about the good old days of NFL championships and everything they've had to go through in the decades since. And, you know, this. This is their moment. And that's the guy who has helped turns it around. He's done a great job and has them in incredible position here with seven weeks to go.
Mark Kester
You know, I like this Lions team quite a bit, but I also am trying to figure out if I like it because of the other NFC options. Is there a team you can see that will sort of emerge to contend with them, or is it just the Lions and everybody else?
Herm Edwards
Yeah, I think if you want to buy in what the Eagles are doing now, you know, that's the first team that kind of comes to mind as a team that has turned it around and is stacking wins on their own side. But I think you're right. There's a little bit of a drop off there, and especially with the 49ers as banged up as they are and the key injuries that they have. And I think it was sitting five and five coming into action today against Green Bay. And so to me, that was. That was kind of the team, if you look at how it all shook out last year in the NFC Championship game. I think you're right. That's a good point. You know, right now it's. It's them, and it feels like everybody else in that conference.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know what to make of this Anthony Richardson thing, Cassidy. I mean, is this a guy who is playing to prove that he can still be the quarterback of the future? Is this sort of an in between moment for the Colts until they move on? What's at stake for Anthony Richardson both today and for the rest of the season?
Herm Edwards
Well, I think today's important because you see if we can do it back to back, you know, that. I know it was the jets last week, but it's a good defense. And that was a different guy. You know, that was a guy who maybe it flashed in front of him that, like, hold on a second. I've only been here for a couple of years. You know, I was a top four pick. And look, he was injured last year. The whole thing tapping out a few weeks ago was certainly a terrible look. And I would think, you know, riding a couple weeks benched and thinking like, well, that's my job. I should be performing that. And then you get that chance back, you take advantage of it. And he did as well as he could. I still think, you know, based on last week, that he's only 22 years of age. I mean, many of us thought he would stay in Florida for at least, you know, a second year. And, you know, he's learning at a very young age, you know, with a team that he's trying to build around. So I still think it feels like a 2.0, like a restart, but it's what you make of your opportunities. And he has this great opportunity to kind of put that little ugliness aside in quick fashion and he's going to have to do it against one of the best teams in the National Football League today.
Mark Kester
Mark Kester on the call for Lions and Colts here on ESPN Radio. Before we get you out, you know, everybody calls you Kasty. Do you like that, or is that just something people call you? Like, I don't like. There was a time people would start calling me Jonesy, and I was like, I didn't consent to this. Why are people calling me Jonesy? Like, do you like people calling you Kesty?
Herm Edwards
This is a funny thing you just brought up, and I've never talked about it. I've been Kesty at work for now almost 30 years. And yesterday Kelly Stauffer called me Mark during the game, and I looked at him like, who is Mark? And I have friends that, you know, I grew up with. You know, I'm in my 50s now. We're on a golf, golf trip, and, you know, sunk like a 50 foot birdie. And they're like, whoa, Cassidy. And I'm like, you've never called me that before. So I'm just used to it. I'm good with it. And I. And I usually. That's the only thing. People don't even know my real first name.
Mark Kester
At work, calling you Cassidy because I feel like they should have asked for permission.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Herm Edwards
Yes. It was one of my first bosses, Eric Schoenfeld, when I got to ESPN radio in 1999 at a left field, just said, kirsty, come here. And I'm like, who's Cassidy?
Mark Kester
And everyone, just from that moment, Stonefield needs to watch himself because I don't. I'm getting the sense you don't like it. I'm getting the sense you don't like caste as a name. So I just want to call you. I'm gonna call you Mr. Kester. Thank you for coming on.
Myron Metcalf
I'm not doing that. I'm not.
Herm Edwards
I appreciate that, Myron. That's the only thing I answer to anyway, Matt, so you might as well.
Mark Kester
All right, have a good game tonight. I appreciate it.
Myron Metcalf
Appreciate it.
Herm Edwards
I appreciate it, guys. Talk to you soon.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know who calls you Jonesy. Yeah, but who calls you Jonesy?
Mark Kester
I had a couple of people call me Jonesy, but they would be like, what if I just started calling you Mama? That wouldn't be nice. Whoa.
Myron Metcalf
My mom calls me that. Yeah, that's my mom's. And my mom. Well.
Mark Kester
Your mom calls you Mama?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that's my nickname. But, yeah, you can't. No one can call me Mama. Yeah, That's. But yeah.
Mark Kester
Really?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that was her name.
Mark Kester
Oh, that's kind of sweet.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Yeah, that was her. You know, that was my kid nickname, Nick.
Mark Kester
Do you think that could be our pet name for Myron?
Myron Metcalf
No, we're not doing that. Hey, man, listen. Nah, for real. No, don't call me Myron. Don't do that. No, no, no, don't. Listen, guys, we don't.
Mark Kester
You're getting very serious.
Myron Metcalf
I'm not being very serious. I'm just saying that.
Mark Kester
Yeah, when you bring out the for real, though, like now, that's like a whole nother. For real, though, is like, watch what you're saying to me. For real.
Myron Metcalf
There's one. One person has ever caught me, and that's my mom. That's, you know, it's not like a universal nickname. You know what I mean? Like, it's not like that everyone calls you. I also wouldn't want to call another grown man.
Herm Edwards
My.
Myron Metcalf
My.
Mark Kester
That's a bad.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that's a weird thing too, right? That's a. But it's true.
Mark Kester
Kentucky had that player. He now plays for Oklahoma City. Tata Washington. And I always felt weird calling him Tata. I was like, I don't know. I know. It's like. It's like Bernie Mac says about Delicious. Like, I don't know that I want to call you Delicious. I don't know if I want to call you Tata.
Myron Metcalf
Who controls nicknames? Like, do you get to decide? Because I agree with that point on Cassidy.
Mark Kester
I feel like somebody should have said, because if your boss just runs around, like, if again, if my boss, Justin Craig were to just be like, all right, Jonesy, I'd have to feel like I should be able to say, you know what? I'm not Jonesy. I'm Matthew.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Yeah. They call me a peanut head as a kid sometime, and I didn't like that. But I couldn't, you know, I couldn't stop it. I did have a pointy head, you know.
Mark Kester
Let me ask you a question. Would you rather call you My My or Peanut? You tell me.
Myron Metcalf
You gave me neither. Well, probably neither, but probably my mouth. With peanut, it just Peanut head didn't feel fair. There's no real comeback.
Mark Kester
You gave me a for real, though on my mind.
Myron Metcalf
No, I didn't.
Mark Kester
You know, coming up, New York football is an absolutely turn. An absolute turmoil. We'll talk about the jets and the Giants. I met Jones. He's Mr. Myron Metcalf. Say that that's next on ESPN Radio.
Matt Jones
Football Sunday on ESPN Radio. Bo Nicks has worked his way into the Rookie of the Year discussion.
Mark Kester
Touchdown Bo Nix.
Cassidy
He is playing great.
Matt Jones
And this week he leads the Denver Broncos fight for the postseason into Las Vegas to face Gardner Minshew. And the Raiders coverage begins today at 4 Eastern on select ESPN radio stations. Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Mark Kester
Once been getting. Welcome to AutoZone. What are you working on today?
Cassidy
I think my battery's dead.
Mark Kester
With free battery testing and charging, we can help you get back on the road.
Myron Metcalf
So what if I need a new one?
Mark Kester
We have the right Duralast battery for you.
Myron Metcalf
Only at AutoZone. Get in the zone. AutoZone.
Mark Kester
And what about my old battery? We can recycle it right here at America's number one battery destination.
Myron Metcalf
Get in the zone.
Mark Kester
Auto zone restrictions apply. Hey, I'm Ryan Reynolds. At Mint Mobile, we like to do.
Cassidy
The opposite of what big wireless does.
Mark Kester
They charge you a lot, we charge you a little. So naturally, when they announced they'd be raising their prices due to inflation, we decided to deflate our prices due to not hating you. That's right. We're cutting the price of mint unlimited from $30 a month to just $15 a month. Give it a try@mintmobile.com switch. $45 upfront payment equivalent to $15 per month.
Myron Metcalf
New customers on first three month plan only.
Mark Kester
Taxes and fees. Extra Speed slower above 40 gigabytes.
Herm Edwards
Details.
Mark Kester
Twice shy five nine. That's not right. 888 say ESPN. Do you know who sings this? Who sings this? Myron, is this Give me the year.
Myron Metcalf
Give me the years Give me the.
Mark Kester
Years Well, I mean, you should be able to guess. It's late 80s somewhere, right? Early 90s. Who is it, Nick?
Myron Metcalf
What's that? Band we want to fight. No, that's not them. That's Beastie.
Mark Kester
No, that's not it. Twisted Sister. Twisted Sister. This is like. It's like Great White. You nailed it, Matt. Very good. Great White. Thank you.
Myron Metcalf
This is one of the songs that was in Karate Kid. Like, you know.
Mark Kester
No, it wasn't.
Myron Metcalf
He's on the beach.
Mark Kester
You're just saying words. The Giants. The Giants have cut Daniel Jones and Aaron Rodgers could end up being confident. He's been worse than Zach Wilson, and he's been worse than most of the recent jets quarterbacks, including Sam. Sam Darnold. So I'm asking a question right now. We like to talk about who's playing. Well, let's go to New York. Which franchise is in worse shape going forward, the Giants or the Jets?
Myron Metcalf
Oh, the Jets. I think by far I don't think it's close. And I only say that because the Giants are going to have an opportunity sort of right away, I think, in this class to get a new quarterback to build around a young face and to kind of move on from there. The jets spent money like they thought they would be a Super bowl contender. You know, the Giants cut people. You know, they got rid of all the big deal. They wouldn't sign Saquon Barkley. They knew where this was headed. But the jets thought that they would be contenders, and they spent that kind of money. It's just hard to unravel that when you go all in and it doesn't work out. Those are the franchises where it takes them five, six, seven years to bounce back. So I think the jets, who've actually really never bounced back, they've always been at the bottom. They're in a much worse situation after going all in on Aaron Rodgers.
Mark Kester
Yeah, I agree with that. I mean, the Jets. Okay, so let's start. There are sources saying to other reporters that it appears increasingly likely the Jet, that Aaron Rodgers is gonna be placed on IR or benched over the next few weeks. There are other sources saying that he, like, won't even get an MRI because it will show that he shouldn't play. And he sort of probably believes that eating, like, you know, I don't know, mustard grass will fix his Achilles and mri. The jets have fired their gm. And you're exactly right. The salary cap situation is the main. Is the main thing. Because if you watched Hard Knocks, it was clear the Giants were going to give Daniel Jones one last chance. But they also were prepared, prepare, preparing for the idea that if it doesn't work, we can quickly move to the next realm. They're going to do that. He's going to be released. I think the jets are in a situation where they went all in with maybe the least trustworthy person to go all in with in the league. And now you're paying the cost of him not being good anymore.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I think it's a lesson for life. Right? Like, if you're going to give the goofy, quirky conspiracy theory person in your office power, they better be very, very good at what they do because that's the only way you can overlook it. Right. Like crazy Bob, you know, better be better, have a really good track record, or else you gonna get yourself in a tough spot. And I think that's what Aaron Rodgers was. It wasn't just that they signed him. It was that they gave him the power to really control the team. Who do you want on the team? Okay, we'll go get devonte Adams. We'll sign some of your old buddies from the Packers. We'll go get your former offensive coordinator that nobody ever trusted. We'll do whatever you want us to do if it's going to make you happy. And this is what you're left with when you go all in on a guy who. You could put up with it in Green Bay when he's the mvp, but now the weird, quirky stuff is just a ruin in everything because he's not good anymore. And I think that's the challenge.
Mark Kester
Yeah, I think that he's a. He's a team killer. And again, I don't mean to keep going back to Hard Knocks, but I felt like that as soon as I saw that, that Hard Knocks and this. Listen, I'm not trying to be rude to the producers of Hard Knocks. The boom boom, boom boom is the greatest music on a sports show ever. And having. What's his name?
Myron Metcalf
What'd you say? What is it? What's the music?
Mark Kester
You know what? And then he goes, no, that's not the music. Why don't you play any amount of stuff? Here we go.
Myron Metcalf
You just played Jay Z. What did you play?
Mark Kester
Listen, like I said, so that music is the best. And then the guy. No, Noel Shriver or Liam.
Myron Metcalf
What's his name? Liam Schreiber.
Mark Kester
Liam Shriver. Same as Noel Shriver. They. He does the voiceover.
Myron Metcalf
It's a great show, but I always wanted his job. Yeah.
Mark Kester
The jets season, the jets episode of. That was an embarrassment in a show that is otherwise showing you. I mean, I'm sure it's showing you like a sanitized version of whatever they're showing you. But I always felt like it was real. That was an embarrassment of sort of, you know, worshiping a goober in Aaron Rodgers. That's what it was. That whole show was dedicated to the mythology around Aaron Rodgers. And as soon as I saw it, I said it on the show, I said, that team is going to be a disaster because the entire thing is built on the cult of Aaron Rodgers. And this whole organization was. They brought in his friends, they brought in his play callers, they brought in. I'm sure everybody there was like, you know, eating bark in order to try to get the most out of their. Their bodies. And you knew it was going to happen. And then when it has just like any sort of cult of ego, when it falls apart, you look for people to throw under the Bus. So they threw the coach under the bus. They threw the offensive coordinator under the bus. They threw the GM under the bus. And the only person with a bigger ego than Aaron Rodgers is the owner Woody Johnson, who also seems to be kind of crazy. And now the reports are that he and Aaron Rodgers aren't getting along. What a shock. Cult day. Aaron fell apart and it was easy to see coming.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Not Hard Knocks. When he was. What was he calling his head coach? Rob or whatever. That's never. Yeah. And people were like, no, no, no. It's about their relationship now. They have a good relation.
Mark Kester
It was an.
Myron Metcalf
There has never been a player.
Mark Kester
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
Who has come in and talked to their head coach the way Aaron was talking to Robert Salah. Like that in and of itself. And then the weird thing to me was Robert Tyler was like, it's okay. He can call me whatever he wants.
Mark Kester
I work for him. There was a lot. There was a lot in that episode. Myron of me thinks thou do protest too much. There was a lot of.
Myron Metcalf
No, man.
Mark Kester
Aaron's really cool. Like. Like, he is. There was like. There were 15 people that said that. And there came a point that you were like, why does everybody keep saying it? Because, you know, and you start the.
Myron Metcalf
Year, you know, you start. And those young guys in the locker room are like, hey, man, legendary quarterback. Maybe we can get to a Super Bowl. He's Unk. Right. He's the cool uncle at that point. Everybody loves.
Mark Kester
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
But. But now, you know in November, when you got two wins and you're getting midnight RFK texts from your starting quarterback, it's like, dude, what. Why. Why are you texting me, man? Like, I don't want to talk about this stuff now. He's just weird Unk. So he's going from cool to weird Unk. And that is not a place where you want to be.
Mark Kester
Now, on the Giant side, you know, I thought they were kind of mean to Daniel Jones. Not going to lie to you. I said that earlier. Like, making him play scout team safety, like, that's a little bit of kick in the kicking the dirt audience. What if. Let me ask you a question, though, about Daniel Jones. There's some reports he might end up with the Vikings. What if he goes somewhere else and Allah, Sam Darnold or Geno Smith or one of these guys, like, has a different kind of career, like, resurrects his career. Yeah. Would you start to think that maybe the Giants are in the same boat as the Jets? It's just a franchise where things go to die. I mean, look what Saquon Barkley has done this year.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, what if I wake up six, seven? Like, wouldn't that just change everything? You don't think that, you don't think.
Mark Kester
It'S possible he goes and plays better.
Myron Metcalf
Somewhere else, but his better isn't good enough. And I think to me, Giants fans are hypocrites and everything I saw this week was a joke. The sympathy they show for Daniel Jones when he was turned into a scout team safety briefly when he was pulled off the field. They showed none of that through all of the bad times with Daniel Jones. So don't come to my age, don't look at me in a tough situation, be like, oh, I can't believe it happened to you if you haven't cared up until this point, man. So I just, it was all disingenuous in my opinion. Daniel Jones is not a third shift worker in a mine somewhere in America or driving a truck. He got eight figures to be a rather mediocre quarterback. At the end of the day, he had his chances. He didn't prove himself. Goes to Vikings, wherever, the Ravens. I don't think it's going to change anything because his ceiling is what it is. We've seen enough of Daniel Jones to know there is no bright future there.
Mark Kester
There are times that partial eight figure.
Myron Metcalf
Dude, come on, man.
Mark Kester
Yeah, but there are times he ain't.
Myron Metcalf
Going to his second job across town.
Mark Kester
Let me, let me use an example. John Calperi, I thought needed to leave Kentucky, but that doesn't mean that if he left, I sent him away on a Greyhound. Like I could go ahead and pay for a plane ticket for him. Like we don't. You don't need to just throw people in the. Like, I feel like making him play scout team safety was making him crying in the penthouse. One way to Seattle. I just.
Myron Metcalf
Oh, crying in the penthouse.
Mark Kester
Herm Edwards is next. That's here on ESPN Radio Countdown to kickoff.
Myron Metcalf
Hey, it's Evan Cohen.
Cassidy
Coming up Monday, the Giants release Daniel Jones.
Mark Kester
Where will he go next and who will be the quarterback of the Giants long term? We'll discuss Monday, 6am Eastern on Sportsman like ESPN Radio, ESPN2 and ESPNU.
Matt Jones
Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Mark Kester
It is Canada Kickoff here on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. If you like this show and I think you would or you wouldn't listen. Well, except this one guy. Let me show you what one guy wrote, Myron. One guy wrote on to on my Instagram. Found my Instagram, Myron, and wrote this dude has the worst voice ever. Lol. Well, I think you have the worst voice ever, Yankees. Is that about you, Shambles? Yeah. Saying that about me like my voice wasn't normal. I know, it's. It's kind of like a hick doofenshmirtz. I get it, Myron, but it works for me.
Myron Metcalf
No, you got a good. You got a good voice. I mean, you know, I don't. I don't think. Ignore that guy, man. You know, Ignore him. Don't let him get you down.
Mark Kester
That wasn't that convincing, Mama. I thought.
Myron Metcalf
You pay attention to those people too much, man. Ignore all those.
Mark Kester
Herm Edwards is here. You want to talk about a voice? This is a voice of a man who knows what he's doing.
Cassidy
I'm going to be the boy. I'm going to be the voice of reason. What I just heard, you ought to text that guy back and say, hey, well, stop listening then. You know, my father told me when I was younger, what do you do? It's a great line. It's the greatest line I've ever heard. My father said this, remember some, son. The fool shouldn't follow. The fool.
Mark Kester
I like it. The fool.
Myron Metcalf
That's a good phrase.
Mark Kester
Don't follow the fool.
Cassidy
Just don't follow him.
Mark Kester
Coach, don't do it.
Myron Metcalf
Why don't we have phrases anymore? Like, I feel like every phrase we have is for me. It's my father, my grandmother. Why. Why don't we do that anymore? Like, we need more of those things.
Cassidy
You know why? Because people don't talk anymore.
Myron Metcalf
That's true. That's fair.
Cassidy
People don't have conversation anymore.
Mark Kester
What do you mean? What do you mean?
Cassidy
People's on the phone or a computer. That's what people do. They just text.
Myron Metcalf
It is different.
Mark Kester
They don't say any words.
Cassidy
It's like they can't talk. They can't. They can't hold it. You ask a young person to talk for about three minutes, they get nervous.
Myron Metcalf
It is hard.
Mark Kester
When you were. When you were. When you coached at the college level just a couple years ago, did you find it hard with players now because of what you're saying?
Cassidy
No, because here's what I used to do. Meetings couldn't last very long, about 20 minutes. And then they go get a. They get to get a phone break. So you got to see who's texting them. So go get your phone break and then just put your phone back. Locked room. Come on back into me. I mean, it's just so you just.
Mark Kester
Had to Adapt to the way they do.
Cassidy
It's just adapt to it. That's the new. That's the new age player, you know.
Mark Kester
Well, let me. Let's talk about the new age player. I'm sitting here looking at four quarterbacks in the rookie class. Jaden Daniels, Caleb Williams, Bo Nicks, Drake, may all play well. I've seen something from all of them in the last few weeks. Do you like. Do you feel good about all four of them?
Cassidy
I feel good about it. I feel good for the franchises, for the. For the fans. The quarterback has to play well in today's world, and I vote for all of them. I'm rooting for all of them. I want them to play well. It makes the game better. It makes it more pleasing to the eye to watch. There's nothing more boring than watching a quarterback that just can't get it done for a team. I've been there and it's hard, man. The field is 150 yards long. It's just. It's like, oh, boy, can we just make a first down?
Mark Kester
Yeah.
Cassidy
You know, the fans have a score. Touchdown that I was in games where I was like, just make a first down. Just give the defense a rest, you know, I mean. But no, I'm happy for all those guys. I think they're all been proven, which is good.
Myron Metcalf
Coach, you've had, you know, a lot of conversation about Daniel Jones and how that situation was handled. You've been in the room, you know, you've had to make some of those decisions where a guy just doesn't have it anymore. He's not helping your team. Is there a way to do it in a kind way, or does it just have to be what it is?
Mark Kester
Well, you don't have to put him at scout team safety, do you?
Cassidy
You know what? I think that's what he should play.
Mark Kester
Really?
Cassidy
Oh, I think he's safety. Big, big, strong, can run if he's not afraid to tackle.
Myron Metcalf
You gonna switch his position? Wow.
Cassidy
I would. I thought he's a safety, but that's just me.
Mark Kester
But can you do.
Myron Metcalf
When you have that conversation with a guy like Daniel Jones, is it. Is there a way to do it in a way that people want. They want. They want the Giants to be nicer?
Cassidy
Well, I don't. This is practice. They're in practice.
Mark Kester
What?
Cassidy
People being nicer? Well, wait a minute. Why weren't you nice then? Why were the people booing him then when he played bad? If you want to be nice.
Myron Metcalf
Exactly. Don't boo the guy theory.
Mark Kester
Ye. Yep.
Myron Metcalf
Exactly. When you sit in, your Giants fans.
Cassidy
Are making money, and then you, oh, boo, he can't play.
Myron Metcalf
Exactly.
Cassidy
He's in practice playing safety.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, stop that.
Cassidy
It's practice. It's okay.
Myron Metcalf
They don't care that much. Giants fans didn't care that much.
Cassidy
No.
Mark Kester
Yeah. Last week we were saying about the Chiefs and the Bills and you, you know, we talked about, well, the Chiefs will probably lose. They did. I really enjoyed that game a lot. I thought it was very well played. I thought it was exciting. It was kind of, in some ways, the best of the NFL. But I also don't know that I think it means much, Herm, because I think if they end up playing in the. In the playoffs, I still think the Chiefs have the same chance of winning. What about you?
Cassidy
I agree. The one thing I know, the Chiefs are. You know, sometimes you get. You get tired. You get emotionally tired. When you've gone to so many playoffs and Super Bowls like the Chiefs have done, there comes a part of the season which is just fatigued to get up every game. Right. But when the playoffs start, they hit a different gear. They know this is the time they're chasing history. Now, look, Miami's, you know, not chasing that history. They're chasing, can we win three in a row. That has been on their mind from the beginning of the season. They don't talk about it, but why wouldn't you think like that? That's historic. If they could do that. And I think when they get in the playoffs, you know, they'll. The switch will. You'll go, oh, they have playoff mentality. They've been there. They've done that. They've won playoff games. They've won Super Bowls. They know there's a different feeling when you get in the playoffs.
Myron Metcalf
Coach, Forget what's happening this season for a little bit. November 19, 1978. Oh. You were involved in a game between the Eagles and Giants and what they call the Miracle at the Meadowlands. Your scoop and score, which I believe was ranked 23rd by the NFL in greatest plays of all time. What do you remember about that moment in that game for your.
Cassidy
Basically, you know, we were a team. Our second season, our first season, you know, we weren't very good where I think we were. What were we? We didn't win many games. There wasn't 16 games in. I don't think maybe it was. Maybe it was 14. 14, yes.
Mark Kester
Okay.
Cassidy
We weren't very good. And the second, third year of Dick Vermeil, we were a pretty good team. Thought we could get in the playoffs. And, you know, we were a better team than the Giants, we felt. And it was a game that was slipping away from us, and we were like, oh, man, we might lose this game. And toward the end, you know, it didn't look very good. And we're just kind of standing around and we're talking with the Giants, basically, with the players as they were in the huddle. And they broke the huddle. In the first play, they tried to run the football, and then the next play, they said, we'll take a knee. They took a knee. But one of our linebackers, you know, Bergey, Bill Bergey, the clack was the center. He pushed clack into the quarterback. And this scuffle kind of started. Officials came in there, and they stopped the game, you know, okay. And then they gave Joe a signal to, okay, well, then run the ball. So. And I know this because Joe Passarsi came to the Eagles the next year. So he tells his side of the story because we're sitting there going, well, why did you. Why did you try to run the ball again? He says, well, prior, a week or two. A week or so prior, they sent a signal into Joe when he didn't run the play, and they got mad at him. He said, when I said, so now he's in the huddle talking to the player, saying, we got to run the ball. A lot of the players in the huddle were going, no, man, just take a knee. Just take a knee.
Myron Metcalf
The game is over in the game.
Cassidy
And he says, no, I'm running the ball. Zonka's there. So I walk up on a line of scrimmage, and Kotar is the wing back. I shake his hand. I say, man, good game. You know, we're kind of talking. It's toward the end of this game, we're all said, Dick Vermeil is on the sideline. His back is turned away from the field. He's getting the players together just in case we have one more play, right? And Joe, he's kind of looking back at Zonka, and I kind of look at it. I kind of see this. I go, that's weird. And Zonka's kind of standing there, like, with this. You can just see him, like, almost like, hey, man, just take a knee, right? And he's not saying that, but you can just. There was a sense of something was going on here. So Clack hikes the ball because he sees the 42nd clock running down, and he's worried about it's going to Run out. It's going to be a delay a game, stop the clock, right? So he hikes it before Joe's ready. So the ball is actually bobbled from quarterback. Center exchange. No one sees that. So Joe gets the ball, and the timing is messed up, and Zonk is coming through, and it hits his hip. Now Kodar's looking at me. He's thinking that he's going to hand it off. He don't see all this. And I run and I see it. It hits his hip and it's falling. I'm going, oh, man, I got to get on the first bounce. That's what I'm thinking. Get it on the first bounce. And it hits, and it bounces perfectly. No one blocks me because they just think they're taking a knee or handing it off as a dive. And I come off the edge and I get it on the first bounce. So I'm running in. And the funny part is Dick Vermeil's on the sideline, and he sees players leaving the bench, and he grabs one of them. He says, where are you guys going? And he says, coach Herm just scored a touchdown. He never saw it.
Myron Metcalf
He didn't know.
Cassidy
Dick never saw the play. He never saw the play. Right.
Myron Metcalf
The greatest play of all time.
Cassidy
It was just one. I was in the right place at the right time. You know, I was fortunate to get a bounce. But that.
Mark Kester
I don't believe that we won that game. The big ball, big one of the greatest come to great players. Well, that's what I.
Cassidy
Will say. This winning that game. We got into the playoffs that year. We needed to win that game. That was one of those games where we finally won. We won the game. We got into the playoffs. But for some reason, the Giants, in my career, always played good against the Giants.
Mark Kester
Yeah, you owned. Well, let me ask you this before we get out of here. Let's say, you know, Deion Sanders, son Shedeur is going to be, you know, going into the draft. There's been some talk he may try to pull an Eli Manning and figure out where he wants to go. If you had a kid that was the number one pick in the draft and, like, really was an uber talent.
Cassidy
Yep.
Mark Kester
And you know the NFL like you do.
Cassidy
Yeah.
Mark Kester
Would you try to make it to where you kept him from going to a franchise that you thought was a disaster, or would you say, hey, son, this is just what you gotta go do.
Cassidy
You gotta go do it.
Mark Kester
You wouldn't try to influence it?
Cassidy
Nope.
Mark Kester
Why is that?
Cassidy
As you shouldn't I just believe that's how it works. At the end of the day, if you. And I'm an NFL guy, I'm a guy. Look, I owe my, my gratitude to the National Football League and football in general. I just think you get drafted where you get drafted, and if you're the guy that everyone thinks you are, they're going to build that team around you.
Mark Kester
And you're going through. I mean, there's two people that have done it that I could think of. John Elway and Eli Manning. Worked out for both of them.
Cassidy
I'm just telling you, it just works out. Just do the right thing, man. When you get drafts to a team, it might be the team you don't like. It might be the. Look, I wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy my whole life. I was a Cowboy fan. I was like, look, I'm playing for the Cowboys. Growing up, I am playing for the Cowboys. And after the first week of training camp when I went to Philadelphia, you know what I figured out? You can't like the Cowboys. You wearing this eagle suit, man. After that, I was not a Cowboy fan anymore. I figured it out, right? But I just think you go where you go, man, it just go. Go and make it better.
Mark Kester
There you go. Herm Edwards, ESPN NFL analyst, always bringing the wisdom and the fun. And I. And he tells me he loves my voice. That's what I like to hear. That's all that matters as long as I have her.
Cassidy
I got you, man. Tell that guy, stop listening.
Mark Kester
Go stop listening.
Myron Metcalf
We don't need them.
Cassidy
Obviously he likes you guys, what you.
Mark Kester
Do because he's listening to exactly her. Edwards. Appreciate. By the way, Sunday morning countdown to kickoff. We will be in Cincinnati next week.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, man.
Mark Kester
You ever heard that song? Maybe we can play it in the next break here. Myron. Cincinnati, Ohio. Do you know that song?
Myron Metcalf
What makes you think I know that song?
Mark Kester
Connie Smith. Look it up during the break. We'll teach it to Myron. And then we'll also have Myron tell you why you need to watch all these terrible games today. That's next here on ESPN Radio.
Matt Jones
Football Sunday on ESPN Radio. The Detroit Lions are sitting high atop the NFL standing. And this week they head to Indianapolis to face Anthony Richardson and the Colts, who are alive in the AFC playoff race. Coverage begins today at noon Eastern with kickoff at 1 Eastern on select ESPN radio stations. Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Mark Kester
There you go. Canada to kickoff on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. This is where we're going Sunday, Myron. Heaven waits for me. I know In Cincinnati, Ohio. And that's where we'll be next week for Bengals and Steelers.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, man. You said heaven weights. Is that what she's saying?
Mark Kester
Yeah. Heaven waits for me. I know in Cincinnati, Ohio, they play this at every Reds game. Myron, just so you know, they play the seventh inning stretch, then they lead into this game.
Myron Metcalf
Did you imagine Chili, you die, go to heaven and it's Cincinnati and be pissed. First of all, Chili waiting for you.
Mark Kester
Cincinnati is an up and coming city. It is a much nicer city than it was 15 years ago. And I would say of the Ohio cities, it has now passed Cleveland in livability. Nick. So what do you think about that?
Myron Metcalf
I'd still be the rankings without the fight. It was. It had to fight. It had to knock off Cleveland. The mic drop.
Mark Kester
Well, we are going to be in Cincinnati. If you watch my Twitter, we find.
Myron Metcalf
Though KY Sports Radio.
Mark Kester
I'll tell you the bar we're going to be at. I think we have a tentative place, but they don't want me to say it yet because it's still tentative. But we'll be outside of Bengal Stadium for Bengal Steelers. Pack all of your defense. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
It'S going to be a different vibe.
Mark Kester
No, no, no.
Myron Metcalf
It's going to be a different vibe.
Mark Kester
Okay, but Myron, I. This is a different vibe. I hope you bring. I hope you bring your. Your medical supplies. Like, it's a different vibe when you go to Cincinnati for the Steelers game.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. What's our security situation, by the way, for this game? Because I, you know, I feel like, you know, Cincinnati is a different. And this game in particular is different.
Mark Kester
I got three friends coming. They're going to be our security. Their nicknames are Hubby Tall and the Turkey Hunter. So that should make you feel confident.
Myron Metcalf
They can handle it. Okay. Y'all like to fight at this game. There are more. There are more fights in the stands at this game than any other game.
Mark Kester
Any other game in the NFL. Pittsburgh at Cincinnati. ESPN Radio is presented by progressive Keys to Progress program, providing cars to veterans in need. Sometimes the games that we kind of stink. So we leave it up to Myron to sell you on why you should watch in no huddle.
Matt Jones
It's time to go around the National Football League no huddles.
Myron Metcalf
I'll call the place from the line. Defense will never know what hit them.
Matt Jones
This is the no huddle.
Mark Kester
Wrong Rick 96 double. All right, here's what we do. We're gonna. We're a little behind, so we're gonna put 25 seconds on the clock. You got that Mikey game show music. 25 seconds on the clock for Mike. I think he can handle it. You just worry about making it interesting. 25 seconds on the clock. I'll. I'll give you the game. You tell me why we should watch it. Let's get started. You got 25 seconds. Watching people watch cowboys at commanders.
Myron Metcalf
The reason you don't watch cowboys at commanders is not because of the cowboys. We know they're a disaster. But Jaden Daniels doesn't have rookie of the year locked up the way that he appeared to have it a couple weeks ago. Bo Nicks is coming for that crown. A lot of people think Jaden Daniels might be hurt with the rib injury, but he has to continue to play big to win that rookie of the year and take it away from Bo Nicks. So that's why you're going to watch this game. Right?
Mark Kester
You beat the buzzer there. Didn't even get to 25 seconds. But it was okay for you.
Myron Metcalf
Okay.
Mark Kester
I mean that of all the. Of all the ones we've done this year, that was one of the better ones. You made me want to at least consider it. So I'm gonna give you a solid a minus on that. To start the. To start the game. What happened? I thought we had our music. I just assumed we did.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I wanted. Like, I thought we had game show.
Mark Kester
We'Re working on, but the segment's already started, so.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, like now it changes my whole vibe.
Mark Kester
You have the Sounders too, but Matt.
Myron Metcalf
Well, yeah. Well, what happened to the song? I was waiting for that too.
Mark Kester
Then let's go. What's the next one?
Matt Jones
Patriots at dolphins.
Myron Metcalf
You want to watch this game because obviously Drake May is emerging as one of the top young rookie quarterbacks. But don't look now. The Dolphins have a path to the playoffs. They've won two in a row. They get the Patriots today. They got to go play the jets twice still this season. Or injury riddled San Francisco team. Cleveland and Houston. But there is a world where the Dolphins become the comeback team of the NFL. But they gotta win this game today to continue on that path.
Mark Kester
Why did you sound like a game show host on that one?
Myron Metcalf
You.
Mark Kester
You all of a sudden.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know the music play. I don't know how to. I don't know how to turn it off.
Mark Kester
Music started. I felt like. Actually, here's why I think you did it. Do you know who passed away yesterday?
Myron Metcalf
I don't.
Mark Kester
Chuck Woolery passed away.
Myron Metcalf
Chuck Woolery died. I was Gonna say Chuck.
Mark Kester
Chuck.
Myron Metcalf
That's who I grew up watching.
Mark Kester
He was on love.
Myron Metcalf
He died yesterday.
Mark Kester
He was on Scrabble. He died yesterday.
Myron Metcalf
He was the love show, the role.
Mark Kester
Can you guess what state he was from? Byron?
Myron Metcalf
I don't know. I don't know what state he was from. Love Connection.
Mark Kester
I was like my child from Kentucky. That's right. He was from Ashland, Kentucky. Chuck Woolery passed away at 83. Salute to one of the game show.
Myron Metcalf
Love Connection was my whole childhood, man.
Mark Kester
Finest host. You've said that four times. So you got to give him something besides it was your childhood.
Myron Metcalf
No, but like you know who went to the aunties or grandmama's house a lot as a kid. If you watch Madlock, Love Connection and Days of our Lives, like those are the three shows that stand out.
Matt Jones
So all right, to him, Titans at Texans.
Myron Metcalf
Well, listen, you know, if. If you wonder what this team could be, you have C.J.
Mark Kester
Stroud.
Myron Metcalf
Who he's looking for another big performance after last week. He went three straight games without a 300 plus yard performance. People are still wondering if he can be in elite quarterback. And Will Levis has some signs. Last week, 98 yard touchdown. Is he going to make the case that he is also the quarterback of the future for the Titans? So there's a lot of stake in this game.
Mark Kester
Yeah. That wasn't good. I mean you, you.
Myron Metcalf
It wasn't good.
Mark Kester
Yeah. You did start.
Myron Metcalf
What? Don't say it wasn't good.
Mark Kester
You said if you want to know if they're good, that's how you started. I didn't know what team you were talking about. I didn't know what.
Myron Metcalf
No, the Sounder played though. They played.
Mark Kester
Titans played both games. How was I supposed to know which one you were talking about?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I think people know C.J. stroud versus Will Levis. I don't think it was bad, but go ahead.
Mark Kester
I think we've gotten worse each time, so let's finish.
Myron Metcalf
What do you mean we got worse each time? You said I sound like a game show host. They play game show music. And then you bring up Chuck Woolery and I'm. What do you want me to do? It was his childhood.
Mark Kester
You were.
Myron Metcalf
I really didn't know. Chuck Willoughby died yesterday. That is. That is. I was going to say his name.
Mark Kester
Yeah. All right. All right. Who's next?
Myron Metcalf
Go ahead.
Matt Jones
Broncos at Raiders.
Myron Metcalf
Don't look now, but Bo Nicks is trying to steal that rookie of the year award. Playing some of the best football in the NFL and maybe the best among the rookie class. He can continue that against the Raiders today. Yes. The Raiders are down. You're going, why? Who cares about the Raiders? Brock Bowers might be the next legendary tight end in the NFL. He's having a Pro bowl season. But Bo Nicks versus a potential future hall of Famer at tight end. That's why you care about this game.
Mark Kester
Much better.
Myron Metcalf
Why'd you play that, man? No, don't play. Why'd you play that sound, man. You started multiple of these with don't look now. That's my phrase, though. Don't look now is my phrase to actually get you to look. Because you know what? Yeah. When you say don't look now, people, that's your phrase.
Mark Kester
Is that my, Is that my.
Myron Metcalf
I've been saying don't look now since maybe 94. I've been saying before it became a thing, I was saying don't look now. And then it got popular on the Internet. But I was saying it. I was saying that the dial up modem days. Don't look now.
Mark Kester
No, no huddle. Don't look now. But the 49ers are missing their quarterback today and their playoff hope on life support. We'll tell you what's going to happen with the 49ers next on ESPN Radio. Hi, this is Evan Cohen joining us Monday 6:00am Eastern for unsportsmanlike Indiana, Alabama.
Cassidy
Ole Miss all go down.
Myron Metcalf
Who's left for the 12 team playoff?
Mark Kester
We'll discuss Monday, 6am Eastern on Sportsman.
Myron Metcalf
Like ESPN Radio, ESPN2 and ESPN U.
