Matt Jones
This is Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Myron Metcalf
It is Canada kickoff here on ESPN Radio. That's what they would name me in Appalachia.
Unknown Speaker 1
Well, I mean, middle names have. No, middle names can come from anywhere. I mean, they just sort of appear like people. That's where you get fancy with middle names.
Myron Metcalf
Well, it is a little fancy. What if I told you it was named after a famous author? Would you be able to know who it is? Think about that for a minute.
Unknown Speaker 1
Named Hemingway. Are you Matt?
Myron Metcalf
That would be good. Matt Hemingway Jones.
Unknown Speaker 1
You should change it to that.
Myron Metcalf
That's what that means.
Unknown Speaker 1
Matthew Hemingway Jones.
Myron Metcalf
I will say the hollers of Bell County. If I came in and said, Mr. Hemingway Jones is here to see you, I'm not sure they would be too impressed by that. I'll give you one more guess.
Unknown Speaker 1
Okay. Because the authors know, period. What genre?
Myron Metcalf
Just classic. You know, novels.
Unknown Speaker 2
Is it Fitzgerald?
Myron Metcalf
Fitzgerald's a good. I guess. No, it is Harper for Harper Lee.
Unknown Speaker 1
Kill a Mock to Kill a Mockingbird.
Myron Metcalf
What about that? So Matthew Harper Jones. But I like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, that's John F. Kennedy's middle name, right?
Unknown Speaker 1
That's Regal. That's one of those Regal names.
Myron Metcalf
Cinemas. It's. It's Regal. The text machine is 772-774-5254. One person writes. Matt, I love listening to you admiring. I'd like to hear some stories of the big juice Myron carries and his massive talent around the halls of espn. Yeah, seriously, when you go to ESPN with Myron, I.
Unknown Speaker 1
Nobody, nobody even knows me.
Myron Metcalf
He knows everybody.
Unknown Speaker 1
No, they don't know me.
Myron Metcalf
He's walking around, people are stopping, going. Can I have a moment? When I go to espn, first of all, I can't even get in without going to the visitors room. I've been working here for seven years. No, you're laughing. It's true. I've been working here for seven years. I go to ESPN like twice a year. And when I go, I always have to check in. I have to get my picture taken again in the system.
Unknown Speaker 1
No, they don't know.
Myron Metcalf
I have to get A security guard to let me in so that I could get into the building. Byron's got a whole nother thing. Byron's got his own key card.
Unknown Speaker 1
No, people don't know me. I'm nobody. I have made a career out of just being kind of behind the scenes a little bit. Just doing my thing, not making a bunch of noise.
Myron Metcalf
Is that why I make you nervous? Because I.
Unknown Speaker 1
You make me nervous because I don't know if you know this or not, but I do like money. I don't know if I've conveyed that, but yeah, I mean, you know, I.
Myron Metcalf
Make you nervous because you're, like, you know, worried that I'm gonna get you in trouble.
Unknown Speaker 1
Sometimes I think you like making people a little nervous. That's kind of your personality a little bit. Like, you want people to be a little.
Myron Metcalf
A little bit on the hot. Yeah. Real quick. You've told this story on my show, but I don't know if you've ever told this story on this show. Tell people. When you first got assigned with me six or seven years ago, you said that you were you. You would go places, people. What was that?
Unknown Speaker 1
Never receive more text messages and phone. In that moment, people were like. They'd be like, hey, Myron, how's it going? Good, good. Matt Jones. That's all they would say. They wouldn't say. They wouldn't say, oh, what do you think about working with Matt Jones? What is that gonna be like? They would just say your name.
Myron Metcalf
They just say, matt Jones, question mark.
Unknown Speaker 1
People would literally just say, oh, how's it going? Oh, hope things are good. Matt Jones. I'm like, what do I say? I don't know what I'm supposed to say.
Myron Metcalf
Cause we didn't really know each other then. And we had feuded publicly.
Unknown Speaker 1
We feuded publicly. We had feuded at a Kentucky game. I'll never forget. I was at a Kentucky game. I don't remember the year. And we were at a table arguing. And I remember people looking at us. And I remember leaving that exchange being like, man, I don't ever want to deal with that dude again. Like, what is. Like, what was that? I'm sitting here at pre game and he's arguing me. All I want to do is get to the game. And then, like, months later, ESPN was like, hey, you got a show with Matt Jones and Dan Orlofsky.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1
Like, wow. Life is interesting like that, though, right?
Myron Metcalf
It is. Like, yes, exactly. Right. When I got assigned that, I was like, Myron Metcalf. That's the Guy I argued with in the Kentucky game and Dan Orlovsky, is that the dude that ran out of the back of the end zone? That's who I'm working with. The guy who ran out of the back of the end zone.
Unknown Speaker 1
Hey, kudos to ESPN Radio, man, because that was, you know, who knew that this would work?
Myron Metcalf
Seven years later, we're all still here, some of us a little more successful than the others, but that's all right. The College Football National Championship, I have to read here, is presented by AT&T, Ohio State and Notre Dame. It is Monday night, 7:30 on ESPN ESPN radio. Ohio State's a nine and a half point favorite. Feels like people pretty much everywhere are just assuming that Ohio State is going to win. Marcus Freeman has made Notre Dame more likable than they've ever been in their lives, but he's also getting questions about the NFL. He was asked about his interest in coaching the NFL yesterday.
Marcus Freeman
Here's the reality is that with team success comes individual recognition.
Myron Metcalf
And.
Marcus Freeman
You know, to hear that the Bears have interests, it's humbling. It's the NFL. But it's also a reminder of with team success comes individual success. And so I have put zero thought into coaching in the NFL. All my attention has just been on getting this team prepared for every opportunity you have in front of us. So probably not the answer you're looking for.
Myron Metcalf
But first of all, that's not a no.
Unknown Speaker 1
And secondly, see, did you see that, Matt? Did you see how he basically responded with these Vince Lombardi, remember the Titans quotes?
Myron Metcalf
That's the thing. When you're handsome, you can do that.
Unknown Speaker 1
You get away with it.
Myron Metcalf
You can just say nothing. And people are so mesmerized by your jawline that you're fired.
Unknown Speaker 1
He said absolutely nothing in that response. And people were like, yeah, that's a good.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, it's a good one. But he didn't say no. But I also wish these coaches. I wish these coaches would not just lie to us. Like, I hate when coaches say I've given no thought. Stop it. I don't want to hear you've given no thought. Even if it's just a minute, Myron, you've given thought to what it would be like. I hate when coaches say that because they're all lying.
Unknown Speaker 1
But I mean, Marcus Freeman, this is what he does. Like, I bet you he has a list of Vince Lombardi quotes in his office, right?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1
Like he's one of those dudes who watch, remember the Titans growing up and remembered every word, but now he's in.
Myron Metcalf
A moment, has like a motivational saying on his mirror that he.
Unknown Speaker 1
You are getting. There is a Marcus Freeman group text to that team where there is a philosophical quote that hits your phone at 6am every single morning. And listen, this is what has made him an attractive candidate. But here's the reality. Guys like Marcus Freeman, you don't get these opportunities every day. This could be it for him. If his goal is to coach in the NFL, this might be the moment. And I tell you what, if you beat Ohio State, especially in that situation, Marcus Freeman would be foolish to stay. And sometimes you have to.
Myron Metcalf
And sometimes when you get that moment, you have to leap at it. Like there are. If there are people, if you go back and look in college over the years who've had that moment, didn't leap in it, and it never came back. The one that always sticks to my mind is Kurt Forens. You know that one. There was a year or two where he was rolling at Iowa and every NFL team looked. I think the 49ers did at one point, and he didn't take it. And then it never happened again. His offense never really got back. They're still good, but they always put up 10 points a game. And now people aren't interested and he missed his moment. You might have that moment sometimes where you just got to go, Myron, 100%.
Unknown Speaker 1
I mean, that's a really good example of what Kirk France experienced. But with Marcus Freeman, like at Iowa, you can just stay at Iowa. I mean, that's the opportunity he's at. You can't just stay at Notre Dame. Remember after he lost at Northern Illinois. Well, meaning the success, the pressure, the expectation. Remember, Marcus Freeman loses to Northern Illinois, and the conversation was all of the losses he'd suffered at home to unranked teams. Can this guy even win a good game if he's losing? The teams like Northern Illinois, if you beat Ohio State, you can't stay at Notre Dame. If you lose to Ohio State, you still have to think.
Myron Metcalf
I do think. If they win, he'd have to. The other thing is, there's only a handful of franchises, Myron, where the franchise itself is so historic that it's a draw like everywhere else. You got to look at the quarterback, you got to look at the ownership. You got to look at the roster. There's a handful of franchise. Bears, Packers, Cowboys, Giants. Who else is in that group?
Unknown Speaker 1
I think that's it.
Myron Metcalf
Niners, maybe the Niners.
Unknown Speaker 1
Although I think that's a little.
Myron Metcalf
But. But maybe that's kind of right there. But for me, when I think NFL, if you're just saying what are the historic franchises I kind of kill, I think I'm going to say Bears, Packers, Giants, Cowboys. Like that's, that's the four that's come to my mind. So when that gets offered to you, or at least they want to talk, I feel like, man, you've got to at least listen to it.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah. This is not Jacksonville or New Orleans. Right. I mean, if you're telling me that those guys want Marcus Freeman, no chance. But with Chicago and Caleb Williams and everything that possibly comes with that, he has to at least listen because Marcus Freeman three months ago was in a conversation about his job after losing to Northern Illinois. I mean, that's how people were talking and that's how fast this thing can change. Here's the other part, Matt in the nil rev sharing world, whatever's ahead, dynasties aren't possible anymore. The portal is too fluid. You can't win two, three championships in six years anymore. So you got to make this move.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know if I totally agree with that part, but I do.
Unknown Speaker 1
The Notre Dame's, it's hard for those teams. It's just, it's difficult to do.
Myron Metcalf
The good thing about Notre Dame is they control their schedule. So when they're not good, they'll just make it easy every year so that they have a chance and happen though this year, I mean, they made it to this far, but their schedule in the regular season was kind of terrible. Coming up next, Jaden Daniels. He put on a show last night, but could he be not just in the super bowl, but already the best quarterback in the NFC and maybe the fifth best quarterback in the league? That'll be next right here on Canada Kickoff on ESPN Radio.
Matt Jones
Lift every Rick Barnes, Tennessee basketball coach.
Unknown Speaker 3
I was in the seventh grade when the schools in Hickory, North Carolina were integrated for the first time. And it was amazing from my standpoint that it was not different. My grandparents had taught us to have a great deal of respect for everybody that we met. I think we would be a lot better off as a country. We would really take heed to what he said.
Matt Jones
Continuing the celebration of Dr. King weekend on ESPN radio. Matt and Myron the Podcast.
Unknown Speaker 4

Myron Metcalf
Snap the Daniels for thrill to the opposite side. Terry McClure got through two defenders, 50.
Unknown Speaker 3
40 by 40, 30 by 30 foot.
Myron Metcalf
Race of the 201510 touchdown Washington.
Unknown Speaker 3
He just has a different poise about him than most and he's a rare competitor, there's no doubt about that.
Myron Metcalf
When you have a quarterback like Jayden Daniel, that confidence permeates all throughout the team. Everyone just knows going into every game he got a chance to win because.
Unknown Speaker 1
Of the guy that we have at the quarterback position.
Myron Metcalf
It is Canada kickoff here on ESPN Radio. Met Jones, Myron Metcalf presented by Progressive Insurance. As I said earlier, the text machine where you can text in is 772-774-5254. Myron, people are writing in. One person writes. Matt, when you said that your middle name was a famous author, my guess was going to be Matt Twain Jones. I like this one too. Matt. I got it. Matt Dostoyevsky Jones.
Unknown Speaker 1
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
That would be a weird name.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, that'd be.
Myron Metcalf
That'd be hard.
Unknown Speaker 1
That'd be. That wouldn't work.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. You don't want to be. You don't want people to think you're, especially in 1978, a Soviet in. In eastern Kentucky. One person writes, Matt, I was trying to think if the historic franchises are what you said. You said, the Giants, the Bears, the packers and the Cowboys. Three of those pro. Three of those teams are terrible now. And one of them, the packers, crashed out in the first round of the playoffs. Can you really say franchises are historic if they're not relevant? Now, that's a good question, Myron, but I kind of think yes. I mean, they still have a name that is different than everyone else.
Unknown Speaker 1
Well, in the spotlight is still bigger on those teams than any other teams.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, how would you rank in terms of spotlight? How would you rank the NFL teams? Not just in the moment but overall, I mean, the Cowboys are clearly.
Unknown Speaker 1
Cowboys are one, I think. I think.
Myron Metcalf
Who is not. I mean, I honestly think the Bears and the Giants, in terms of. You're talking about the spotlight on you, especially in the place you're in. Yeah, I think those two are right there with them. Right. Green Bay the same way.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah. I mean, probably Bears, Giants, and then Green Bay. I mean, Green Bay with Rogers and Favre was probably number two.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1
Behind the Cowboys, so.
Myron Metcalf
But Cowboys are obviously number one no matter what, and that's the way it is now. Actually, one that's probably not far down the list, especially a few years ago, would have been the commanders. Right. And they've been bad for a long time. It's the first time they make the conference championship since 1991. Jaden Daniels was really amazing yesterday and honestly been amazing all year.
Unknown Speaker 1
I mean, he's been number one pick.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. I don't want. I don't want to hear that. Let's not. Don't. Don't give me.
Unknown Speaker 1
You pick them, though, right now, though, right? I mean, you have to pick him.
Myron Metcalf
Right now because it's more of a sure thing. Right. I still think Caleb Williams is going to be really good, but, yes, you would have to pick Jaden Daniels now because it's more of a sure thing. But he's been unbelievable. I thought yesterday he was great. Are you. I'm not going to ask you. Are you surprised? But okay. If you were doing this game I like to do, which is you get to draft your quarterback for the next 10 years.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I generally think you're still going to take in the top four. I'm going to take my homes. One, Allen two, Burrow, three. But only because of, like, longevity. Lamar, four. And then I'm taking probably Jaden Daniels five. What about you?
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah. I mean, I. I don't know, man. Didn't we just do this with CJ Stroud a year ago?
Myron Metcalf
We did. We did, but now he. I think the difference is he's taken a step farther than CJ Stroud.
Unknown Speaker 1
He has. But like CJ Stroud. We did this with CJ Stroud.
Myron Metcalf
We did.
Unknown Speaker 1
And CJ Stroud went into the off season and went on every podcast in the NFL and was like, name a quarterback. Brady Manning. I'm better than those guys. And then he came back this year and it was like, oh, that was.
Myron Metcalf
A little premature, but it was.
Unknown Speaker 1
It was a lot. But I think we did that, though. So I just think, to me, we.
Myron Metcalf
Didn'T tell him to go on the podcast? No, but I didn't. I don't know that I have that.
Unknown Speaker 1
No, you did. But the whole point is we have to remember how hard it is to be a good quarterback in this league. Over time, we can name a lot.
Myron Metcalf
Is he the kind of talent people can adjust to in a year, or is it like he's special enough? You can't adjust to it a lot.
Unknown Speaker 1
Mahomes, I think I was thinking about Randy Moss. Man, I hope he's doing well. You know, I know he's. He's battling. You know, you go look at Randy Moss's rookie season and, like, the way it just caught everybody by storm and no one could really deal with that. And then teams, like, drafted all these cornerbacks to try to deal with him. That's going to happen with Jaden Davis.
Myron Metcalf
But they were really never able to deal with him. His talent was so transcendent that, like, as long as he was healthy, he was still dominatingly good.
Unknown Speaker 1
Randy was amazing. I mean, he's a generational talent.
Myron Metcalf
And I think that. I think the quarterbacks you cannot scheme against in the NFL. What I mean is it doesn't really matter what you do. They're going to have some success. I think it's Mahomes, Lamar Allen, maybe Burrow, although I might not put him in that top three in that. Will we be saying Jaden Daniels is one of those?
Unknown Speaker 1
There is definitely a possibility. I think, though, we have to have two conversations. There are people who have done things that have changed the narrative about who they are, and there are people who have done things that suddenly elevate them into a different conversation about where they're ranked. I think we're talking about Jaden Daniels, who has changed the narrative. The Washington commanders. If I'm a free agent. Right now. You're calling Washington. Yeah, right now. And you're saying, I want to play.
Myron Metcalf
Especially after just losing Daniel Snyder. I mean, like, it couldn't. If you're Daniel Snyder, it couldn't be worse. First year you're gone, then this happens.
Unknown Speaker 1
And then, you know, Magic and Company come in and all of a sudden everything's going well. That's going to change. The commanders and as you always talk about, he's got this rookie deal for the next three years. Right. So you have to take advantage of that.
Myron Metcalf
No, you have to.
Unknown Speaker 1
In terms of.
Myron Metcalf
In the nfc, you can. Right. In the nfc, it's there for the taking.
Unknown Speaker 1
But we got to remember how many times we have elevated a quarterback in this league only for them to Struggle in ways maybe we didn't anticipate. Jalen Hurts was going to be the face of the league. It was going to be the best quarterback in this league not named Patrick Mahomes. And that hasn't been the case the last couple of years. We just did this to CJ Struck. We love in the media, we love to pick a guy and go, but we did it.
Myron Metcalf
But we did it to Burrow. And then he met the expectation and.
Unknown Speaker 1
Jaden Daniels could too. But Burrow, did that get into a Super Bowl?
Myron Metcalf
He did. Right.
Unknown Speaker 1
Well, I mean, all I'm saying is.
Myron Metcalf
You'Re picking him, right? Aren't you picking him next week?
Unknown Speaker 1
You're picking the command on the nfc. I'll pick them against whoever wins tonight. He's that.
Myron Metcalf
If you believe he's going to go to the super bowl, then why isn't he Burrow?
Unknown Speaker 1
For me, when I think about where quarterbacks are ranked, it's over time. What you're bringing up is valid in terms of if you had to pick a quarterback for the next decade. I don't think Jayden Daniels is going below 5 again.
Myron Metcalf
Let's, let's say it's the NFL draft and we all start over and they say, okay, first round is the quarterback. Who's, who do you think's going first? I still think Mahomes is going first. Do you agree with that?
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, the whole. The four quarterbacks are going first, second.
Myron Metcalf
Who's going second?
Unknown Speaker 1
You, you pick Lamar, Josh, Allen, Burrow. Those are your top four.
Myron Metcalf
Who are you picking second for?
Unknown Speaker 1
For like I'm on running a franchise.
Myron Metcalf
You're getting it for the next 10 years, burrow. Okay, I like that. I, I'm probably taking Allen, but I actually think Burrow for me would be third. Is Allen third for you?
Unknown Speaker 1
Alan Sterling will be fourth, Lamar fourth.
Myron Metcalf
Only because I worry about the last few years of that. Will he be healthy? Are you taking Jaden Daniels fifth?
Unknown Speaker 1
Possibly. Yeah. I mean I think he makes a strong case, but I also think what he did was amazing. And that's, I think it's okay to sort of be in that moment. This is going to change that franchise. They're going to get big time free agents. But remember how hard it has been to be. We, we discount. We discredit the players who've been even good in this league for four, five, six, seven years. So it's, we got to see if that's going to happen with a guy like Jaden Daniels. But right now he looks amazing. Jalen hurts but but again, Jalen Hurts is a good example of a dude that we decided was going to be in that conversation we just had. And when's the last time we talked about Jalen Hurts is the top six or seven quarters.
Myron Metcalf
Caleb Williams would be top 12 in a draft like that.
Unknown Speaker 1
No.
Myron Metcalf
Top 16.
Unknown Speaker 1
Maybe?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think he's top 16. Who's last of the starting quarterbacks? Is it Deshaun Watson?
Unknown Speaker 1
Sam Darnold? Probably at this point.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1
No, stop.
Myron Metcalf
Why are you are the most like you're in. You're like having a relationship with somebody who every day wakes up with a different personality. You were praising Sam Darnold one week.
Unknown Speaker 1
Ago and then Detroit and LA happened.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. No. Aaron Rodgers is last. You're exactly right. Aaron Rodgers is last.
Unknown Speaker 1
Rogers last.
Myron Metcalf
Rodgers is last. He's old. In 10 years he will be even more cranky and he'll probably still be paying him on the cab. Aaron Rodgers is last. Now, Jalen Hurts had a really tough wild card game, but will he cost his team today? Can Hertz rise up and help his team beat a Rams team that I made a heck of a prediction about? That's next here on Countdown to Kickoff.
Rachelle Smallman
Hey, it's Rachelle Smallman. And coming up Monday, we'll react to the divisional round games as well as look ahead to the college football national championship. It's on Sportsmanlike 6am Eastern right here on ESPN Radio, ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Unknown Speaker 1
The LA Rams, they're traveling east to face Jalen Hurts and the Eagles.
Myron Metcalf
This game is about Saquon Barkley. 68 yards. Saquon Barkley. Oh my goodness.
Unknown Speaker 3
Will they be able to slow him down?
Myron Metcalf
Stanford on the move. Stops fights. Do you think that they're the most.
Rachelle Smallman
Dangerous team left in the nfc, the Rams?
Myron Metcalf
I do.
Unknown Speaker 1
I find this to be a very dangerous game for the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.
Myron Metcalf
Stafford, he's 5 and 1 together with Sean McVay. It came down to the quarterback. You're taking Matthew Staff? Of course I am. Me too. Right now, the forecast. Snow. Snow. That's the forecast. Rams and Eagles. Bitter cold in Philadelphia, and the Rams having to come on a short week all the way across the country to play against the Eagles. It is counting at a kickoff on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. Now, let me be clear. I think it's more than likely that the Eagles win today. But I want to take you back, Myron, A few weeks, maybe eight weeks, we were on this show. I believe the Rams at this point were 3 and 6. I think maybe even 3 and 7. But they were. They were underwater, and people were starting to get healthy. We were talking about the Rams, and I said something that you mocked. You mocked. Like, it honestly made tears come to my eyes. After the show, I had to go ask for comfort from people because of how much you mocked me. Here's what I said. I promise you I said something.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yep. Okay.
Myron Metcalf
I know I said something.
Unknown Speaker 1
Did someone say, okay, all right.
Myron Metcalf
That's all right? You know, I had this set up.
Unknown Speaker 1
Like, I had a whole thing ready to go. I could see it.
Myron Metcalf
You know, you were starting to see the Harper Lee part of my existence. And now. All right, we don't have it. It's okay. You got it, man. It gave me a sense of peace. Peace. This is me. All right, so.
Unknown Speaker 2
I told you we didn't have it.
Myron Metcalf
I don't. Wait, wait, wait. I want to know. You're right. That's not you. Who was that?
Unknown Speaker 2
I can. All right, hold on. We can.
Unknown Speaker 1
Did y'all just Google Matt in the system?
Myron Metcalf
No, they played Jones, and they got Ed2 Tall Jones, and they're playing what he did.
Unknown Speaker 1
What did y'all play?
Myron Metcalf
What is that?
Unknown Speaker 2
I'll take the fault for this one. Mikey and I had our attention elsewhere. So when you tossed the sound.
Myron Metcalf
That's a good way we start this. That's better. Like, that's better.
Unknown Speaker 2
We don't have the cut. I'm trying to find.
Unknown Speaker 1
What was that?
Myron Metcalf
A.J. brown. Is that.
Unknown Speaker 2
That was A.J. brown on why he.
Unknown Speaker 1
Oh, I don't know what that was.
Myron Metcalf
So the clip where I was saying this is what I said. You guys just went ahead and played A.J. brown. All right, well, you know what? Cap had a kickoff. Here he is.
Unknown Speaker 2
Most hosts would have rolled with it.
Unknown Speaker 1
He set it up, though, though. Like, do you all didn't hear the setup?
Unknown Speaker 2
We didn't hear that part.
Myron Metcalf
How was I supposed to roll with that? If I set that up and then AJ Brown comes on, what was I supposed to do?
Unknown Speaker 1
There's no way to do anything else after that. He said that specifically.
Myron Metcalf
We'll leave aside what I said. For another time.
Unknown Speaker 1
Sometimes I wonder if they're on the show. Are y'all producing multiple shows at once?
Myron Metcalf
They got other stuff to do. It's. Don't worry about it. The Rams and the Eagles today, I, I think the Eagles are going to win. But I will tell you, the Rams are a dangerous team. Yeah, and the Eagles won easily over la. But it was the last game before LA got their full roster. But I do remember watching that game and Barkley went for 255 yards and was unstoppable in that game. Do you expect a repeat of that today?
Unknown Speaker 1
You got to find a stat. If you guys can find. There's some crazy Sean McVeigh stat about holding playoff opponents under a hundred yards rushing. Like, I don't think an individual rusher has gained 100 yards on him in a long stretch. So, I mean, here's the challenge about the Eagles in the playoffs. I think we just saw this with the Vikings. I think we saw this with Detroit. I think we saw this with the Bucks. If you have sort of an up and down quarterback in these moments, you can't hide them in the playoffs. You can in the regular season. You can do things differently where, okay, the run game is going to carry you to a victory. Fine. Maybe they're inaccurate here and there. You know, remember Jared Goff through those five picks against the Texas that come back to win? So you can hide guys, you can't do that in this moment. And I think with Jalen Hurts, he has to be really good, I think, to win this game. And he wasn't very good last week. There were the overthrows and the missteps and all the stuff that caused the frustration for A.J. brown and others. And this is one of those games, Matt, where if he doesn't show up, in my opinion, they lose. Because I do think the Rams are going to corral Saquon Barkley, if you will, and they're going to make Jalen Hurts beat them.
Myron Metcalf
And that's hard for him to be. But they weren't able to do this six weeks ago or seven weeks ago. I, you know, I mean, they didn't. They tried to limit Saquon Barkley. There were, there were times they had nine guys in the box. Didn't matter. I mean, Barkley would. Barkley absolutely destroyed them. Now if. I think there's a coach that can adjust for that, I do think McVeigh and his staff can. But this is a dude who had. I don't. Who had 2,124 yards rushing so far this season, including the playoffs, that's the fifth most in NFL history. And, you know, I think the Eagles, their game plan in the cold is going to be to ride him. You're right. If the Rams can make Jalen Hurts, have to be the guy that beat him, they've got a better chance. I just don't know if in this weather they're going to be able to do it. And then you go to the other side of the ball again, Love the Rams, might even pick them in a dome. But what do you think about going? I mean, it's like point 55 degrees in Philadelphia. Like, do you think the Rams offense can adjust to that?
Unknown Speaker 1
It's going to be hard, you know, and then you got to be realistic about, like, what the Rams have experience. I mean, even preparing for the Vikings, they got to play in Arizona because of the wildfires. They had to literally move their families to Arizona. So there's a lot of stuff happening with the Rams beyond the field that I'm sure is difficult to deal with. It's hard to go into Philly this time of year, dealing with the cold as well. All of that said, you're right about everything you're saying is accurate, but I think Jalen hurts has to be good today. And I think they have been able to hide Jalen hurts in these moments, and I don't think today is that moment.
Myron Metcalf
I will say to you, it's going to be interesting. I think the pressure on all things Philadelphia, including Sirianni, got amped up yesterday. Right. Because now the super bowl runs through you. Right now you can say to make the super bowl for Philadelphia, all they really have to do is beat, you know, is. Is beat Washington and the Rams. Like, that's. I don't know that you could ask for a better path to a. To a Super bowl than this. I don't. You think this makes the pressure even more on the Eagles?
Unknown Speaker 1
100%. Because again, if not now, then when. You know, Detroit was in that spot. I mean, it was right there for him.
Myron Metcalf
But especially Washington is a division rival and historic rival. They're gonna have to come to your place. I think you've already beaten them twice this year, you know.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, you. You beat. If you beat the Rams and lose to Washington, there's still going to be changes made. Right. You lose today, and I don't know what that means for Nick Sirianni, but I think we also got to talk about Jalen Hurts, who has had some efficient moments, but he hasn't had he got a $200 million deal to be a superstar in a moment just like this. And we have been waiting for how long to see this stretch of that Jalen hurts. It's been since the super bowl run that we have seen him play at that level in big moments over a.
Myron Metcalf
Consistent stretch to hit a pretty big milestone of. I mean, if he takes them to a second Super Bowl. I mean, you know, not a ton of quarterbacks throughout history that have been to two Super Bowls, right. Win or lose, it doesn't happen a ton. And so, you know, it would be pretty. Pretty big for him. I do want to ask you about the A.J. brown. I know they wanted to act like he was me, but he's his own man, and he's. He was a wide. He's a wide receiver. He was reading a book on the sideline. Yeah, it got that book. Very popular. As you know, I'm a major book person. I go to restaurants, Myron. Almost every night when I eat in a restaurant, I take a book with me. A book or a magazine?
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
So I'm very pro reading books in public. I have read season tickets. I read sitting behind home plate most games. What did you make of A.J. brown reading during a game?
Unknown Speaker 1
Well, I also read books. I don't know if you knew.
Myron Metcalf
I know you like to say that you're, like, in some book club, but they haven't met in, like, three years, right?
Unknown Speaker 1
I read books, I think.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. That's what I thought.
Unknown Speaker 1
It was a cool story, especially for this guy who suddenly now was number one on Amazon as a result of this. In terms of the team, there's no way to get around the fact that he was basically saying, you know, forget this team right now. I mean, he was mad, he was frustrated. He was being a wide receiver and they were winning. Yeah, he was being a wide receiver.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Which is a weird thing to do when you're winning.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah. And then his explanation after the game was like, well, I'm always looking at a book, you know, during these moments.
Myron Metcalf
So is he, though? Has that ever happened before?
Unknown Speaker 1
I don't know if no one's ever seen it, so. It's a bad look, man. It's a bad look. And I think the thing I wonder about the Eagles, I don't know that the Eagles believe in Jalen hurts the way they did when they made the super bowl run a couple years ago. I think the confidence in him as a team, whether they say it publicly or not, continues to fall. And I think you're in this moment where you're looking for Jalen hurts to say, all right, man, a bunch of overthrows last weekend. Bunch of moments where you've got to be accurate in that moment if you're going to lead us to the Super Bowl. They are waiting to see what he's going to do today. Like, it has to be today. If you're. Jalen hurts with the path that you just described going through LA, which West East Coast, 43.6% win rate against the spread for teams in the Pacific time zone to go to the east Eastern time zone since 2005, per this website I was looking up.
Myron Metcalf
So what website?
Unknown Speaker 1
Insight.com sports insight sports.com, i think.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. Is that what I'm supposed to trust?
Unknown Speaker 1
I think so.
Myron Metcalf
Is it.comor.co.
Unknown Speaker 1
It came up. It came up on a search.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, if it came up on a search, it must be true. They have. They have the. They have the sound that we were talking about. It's now available. This is what I said about the Rams when they were 3 and 6.
Unknown Speaker 1
4 and 4.
Myron Metcalf
3, man. It gave me a sense of peace. Peace. That's still not it.
Unknown Speaker 2
All right. I was just kidding.
Myron Metcalf
But here it is. Get outside of Detroit and who's been good? Get outside of Detroit. Can the Rams. Would you grant me. The Rams can be the second best team. Would you grant me that?
Unknown Speaker 1
I'm not there yet.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, but would you grant me.
Unknown Speaker 1
They could be. The schedule shapes up for the possibility.
Myron Metcalf
So if they're the second best team and they go into Detroit, you don't think Matthew Stafford could go into Detroit and get that victory? They did it a few years back. Did you record that while we were playing music?
Unknown Speaker 2
You guys were live.
Myron Metcalf
Where were we while we were out live? Okay. What was that music? That. Was that when we were.
Unknown Speaker 2
Cincinnati.
Myron Metcalf
Okay. All right. Gotcha.
Unknown Speaker 1
Okay. Yeah. Cincinnati was wild.
Myron Metcalf
It sounded like you were just listening on your stereo to music and playing.
Unknown Speaker 1
Like we were on the set of the Wedding Singer or something like that. I don't know what was going on espn. Is that what the show sounded like when we were in Cincinnati?
Myron Metcalf
ESPN Radio is presented by Progressive Insurance. At Progressive, they're making things even easier. They'll help you bundle your home and car insurance together so you can save them both. Learn more@progressive.com or what? 800 progressive that wasn't even the clip. I have a clip where I say they're going. They're a sleeper for the Super Bowl. That's the one you need to find or just play A.J.
Unknown Speaker 1
Brown.
Myron Metcalf
Coming up next, Josh Allen may have lost the MVP to Lamar Jackson, but can he win the big prize today? That's next here on ESPN Radio.
Matt Jones
The NFL playoffs on ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf
Touchdown Lamar.
Matt Jones
The latest news.
Rachelle Smallman
Everything he said dangerous.
Matt Jones
Needed to hear loss predictions and reaction.
Unknown Speaker 1
We have to see Lamar and Josh.
Myron Metcalf
And we get it. Thank you.
Unknown Speaker 1
Football.
Matt Jones
The NFL playoffs. Continuing coverage right here on ESPN Radio. Matt and Myon the podcast.
Unknown Speaker 1
What a weekend it will be in the NFL.
Myron Metcalf
Highlighted by Ravens, Bills. This is as heavyweight as a heavyweight fight can be. Oh my God, what a game. Will the real MVP stand up? Is it Josh Allen?
Unknown Speaker 1
Looking for Allen.
Myron Metcalf
He's got it. Touchdown Bills. Is it Lamar Jackson? Touchdown Lamar. You got to go out of champion. That's what I want, to be labeled as a champion.
Unknown Speaker 1
At the end of the season, there's one happy team. We're going to keep fighting until we are that one team. The one thing that you have to see this postseason, we have to see Lamar and Josh and we get it.
Myron Metcalf
It is kind of a kickoff here on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. He's my Metcalf. I'm Matt Jones on the text machine. 772-7745254. One person writes, Matt, you two are awesome. I listen to your show while going to my parents grave on Sunday and your show makes it easier on me. Well, that's very nice of you. With that said, I have to ask you, how do you not include the Steelers in historic franchise?
Unknown Speaker 1
Oh, that's a good one.
Myron Metcalf
We should have that.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, that's a good one. No, that's, that's, that's a, that's 100%.
Myron Metcalf
Why didn't you bring that up now?
Unknown Speaker 1
Steelers should have been.
Myron Metcalf
Why is this. Why is Ken and Phoenix the first person? Where's Steeler Nation? Are you all embarrassed? How do we not?
Unknown Speaker 1
That is Steelers should have been in there. Steelers have been there. I don't know. Steelers definitely.
Myron Metcalf
One person writes. Matt, My wife and I have a guess, Steelers, as to how tall you two are based on your voice. Our guess is myron is like 63 and you are 5 9. Is that true? Well, actually you can flip that. Okay. Because I am 6 4. I don't care what you think. I sound like. I'm six four. You and your wife are wrong. Myron. What are you, five nine.
Unknown Speaker 1
I'm five'ten five'ten five'nine so like you need to take.
Myron Metcalf
What is it about me that makes me not sound tall? And then Myron sounds tall. That doesn't make sense. I am tall.
Unknown Speaker 1
I've never heard anyone say someone sounds tall.
Myron Metcalf
People are always saying to me, you don't look like what I thought you would look.
Unknown Speaker 1
They say it to me and I'm like, what? People say to me. They think I am because they think you're black. And it's funny to me when people say that to me. It's like they think I hid it from.
Myron Metcalf
There's nothing about me that sounds like.
Unknown Speaker 1
People act like I hid it from them or something. That you were white. Like we've been doing this show the whole time and I just didn't tell anybody. I'm like, what do you mean?
Myron Metcalf
I think it's just because you and I are comfortable together.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, maybe they don't say.
Myron Metcalf
And they think, well, there's no way a white dude could be that comfortable. The thing I get is everybody thinks I'm like 80.
Unknown Speaker 1
If you old or not. Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
I mean, first of all, you are much younger in person, I will say, because you got like an old soul on the air. I do. So people think my voice sounds old and then I look younger than I. I'm actually older than you think I am. If you look at me, I look younger than I. Than I am.
Unknown Speaker 1
I think people think I'm a goofball sometimes. I'm just laughing all the time. And I'm not.
Myron Metcalf
You know, this person thought you were six, four.
Unknown Speaker 2
Can I ask a question?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 2
Who's older?
Myron Metcalf
I think I'm a year or two older. Right. How old are you?
Unknown Speaker 1
That's old. Matt's much older.
Myron Metcalf
Aren't you like 44?
Unknown Speaker 1
I'm 41. Damn.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, so I see. I'm. I mean I'm 46 and people don't. People don't know that, but they, with my voice, they think I'm like 78. They think I'm a 78 year old black man in Kentucky.
Unknown Speaker 1
Wait, so people judge your height on how you sound?
Myron Metcalf
That.
Unknown Speaker 1
I've never heard that.
Myron Metcalf
I never heard that either. That must be this guy and his wife, but I never heard that. Ravens and bills tonight. Six, 6:30 in.
Unknown Speaker 1
Is it 6:30?
Myron Metcalf
Isn't it 6:30? Yeah. 6:30. I see it right here. It's 6:30. It's on. Is this CBS? Do we get Romo predicting the place? Is this a CBS game?
Unknown Speaker 1
Is it one of them. It was one of them streaming games.
Myron Metcalf
No, I think it's cbs. I think, I think it's CBS because. Yeah, uh, Collinsworth has a 3:00 game.
Unknown Speaker 1
You want to make somebody over 55 upset, Matt, you tell them there's a game that's only on streaming only. I mean, you want to make someone furious, you tell them they got to download something to get a game.
Myron Metcalf
You. When this last year, we had to get the. That Peacock right? For the playoff game. Yeah. You had to get Peacock for one of them. I don't. This is a little off topic, but when, when, when Kentucky first started having games on ESPN plus.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
The amount of old people that would call my show asking how to get ESPN plus, and it was also on SEC plus.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
And so I said, if you have the SEC network, you can get it. And they said, what do I do? And I'd be like, you have to download an app. And I had one guy say to me, what does that mean? And I was like, dude, I'm not going to be able to explain this to you. Like, you might as well just.
Unknown Speaker 1
Just go to the list.
Myron Metcalf
You just got to listen on the.
Unknown Speaker 1
Radio somebody's house at that point.
Myron Metcalf
You know, it's.
Unknown Speaker 1
It's not happening.
Myron Metcalf
It's not happening. All right, so the game is on cbs. Romo's going to be really excited watching these quarterbacks. We've talked about what's at stake for these two guys. We know these two dudes are the two filers for the mvp. You think Lamar wins it, by the way? Is he going to end up winning it?
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, I mean, the All Pro is usually the indicator, you know, and those are the same guys who vote. So he'll win a third mvp, which is remarkable.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, it is.
Unknown Speaker 1
But it won't matter who's going to win the game, who's in the game won't matter. It'll be Josh Allen. Whoever wins this game will be viewed as.
Myron Metcalf
So who's winning? I'm asking you. I mean, we'll pick at the end, but I need to know now because I'm excited.
Unknown Speaker 1
I'm wavering, man. I mean, the conditions in Buffalo make me think that this is perfect for Josh Allen. But the way.
Myron Metcalf
But Baltimore's played in the cold. It's not like they're a warm weather and indoor team. It's true.
Unknown Speaker 1
The way. If you tell me both teams are at their best, I think Baltimore not only beats Buffalo, they beat Kansas City, too. The problem is we haven't seen that yet. So. So that's my hesitation when it comes to Baltimore.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I. I'm surprised the Ravens are the favorite. I feel like the Bills should be a clear favorite. Just because they're at home. I mean, last year when Mahomes went into Buffalo and won, I thought part of what made that remarkable is he went into.
Unknown Speaker 1
Did.
Myron Metcalf
He went into Baltimore, too. They won on the road in both games. And I thought that was. I thought that was a fairly remarkable accomplishment. But otherwise, I think in these scenarios, home field really matters. And I think it matters. This is like when I watched the Lions yesterday. I was sitting there watching the Lions and thinking to myself, you don't utilize your home field advantage because you're not outside. Right, right. And I think in these winter months, these teams like Buffalo that are used to it, when they get to host, we're going to see the same thing in Philadelphia. Man, that is a massive difference. And for me, it is the difference, Myron, that is the difference in the game, which is why I'm picking Buffalo.
Unknown Speaker 1
It could be the difference in the game. I'm actually against outdoor stadium.
Myron Metcalf
But that's because you're bougie. But I want to get cold.
Unknown Speaker 1
You should not. I don't think you should be able to build a new stadium in America today without a retractable roof.
Myron Metcalf
Is that because you're bougie, though?
Unknown Speaker 1
No, it just. I don't want the conditions to play a role in football like that.
Myron Metcalf
Why?
Unknown Speaker 1
Because it's not football. Yeah, we're not.
Myron Metcalf
Third definition of football. The frozen tundra of lambeau field.
Unknown Speaker 1
Yeah, 1960, whatever. I mean, modern football should be played in good conditions.
Myron Metcalf
Why don't we just play it online, if that. If that's what you want. Like, why. Why do you not want there to be natural elements?
Unknown Speaker 1
I just want a dome on every. On everything. Retractable roof. Retractable roof. That should be a federal law. Retractable roof.
Myron Metcalf
Listen, turn it up. We're gonna go out with this here on ESPN Radio.
Unknown Speaker 1
There were no brothers in that game. I know what it was. I ain't worried about it.
Myron Metcalf
A marauding song. HE speaks along. Come on.
Rachelle Smallman
Hey, it's Rachelle Smallman. And coming up Monday, we'll react to the divisional round games as well as look ahead to the College Football National Champions Championship. It's on Sportsmanlike, 6am Eastern right here on ESPN Radio, ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron – Episode: "Hour 2: What Do We Look Like?" (January 19, 2025)
In this engaging episode of Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron, hosts Matt Jones and Myron Metcalf delve deep into the latest happenings in the sports world, primarily focusing on college football's national championship and the NFL playoffs. The conversation is rich with insights, spirited debates, and entertaining banter, making it a must-listen for sports enthusiasts.
The episode kicks off with an in-depth analysis of the upcoming College Football National Championship between Ohio State and Notre Dame. Myron highlights Ohio State as a heavy favorite with a 9.5-point advantage (05:18), citing widespread confidence in their performance. He remarks, “Feels like people pretty much everywhere are just assuming that Ohio State is going to win.”
Notre Dame’s coach, Marcus Freeman, receives special attention. The hosts discuss Freeman’s growing reputation and the rumors surrounding his potential move to the NFL. Myron critiques Freeman’s public stance on not considering an NFL career, stating, “I hate when coaches say they've given zero thought about coaching in the NFL. They’re all lying” (06:33). This sparks a broader conversation about the pressures and career trajectories of successful college coaches.
Matt and Myron explore the delicate balance coaches must maintain between college success and NFL aspirations. They caution that coaches like Freeman might miss pivotal career opportunities if they don’t seize the moment. Myron shares a cautionary tale about Kurt Forens, a coach who turned down an NFL chance and saw his career plateau (08:08). The discussion emphasizes the fleeting nature of such opportunities in the highly competitive football landscape.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to ranking current and future NFL quarterbacks. The hosts debate the standings of top players like Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and emerging talents like Jaden Daniels. Myron asserts, “If you believe he's going to go to the Super Bowl, then why isn't he Burrow?” (19:50), highlighting the complexities in evaluating a quarterback's long-term potential.
They compare Daniels to legendary players, suggesting he could be a transformative talent in the league. The conversation touches on the unpredictability of quarterback performance and the factors that influence their success, including team dynamics and individual adaptability.
The hosts transition to the NFL playoffs, providing a detailed preview of the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Los Angeles Rams game. Myron analyzes both teams’ strengths, focusing on key players like Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts. He predicts, “I think Jalen Hurts has to be good today. And I think they have been able to hide Jalen Hurts in these moments, and I don’t think today is that moment” (27:07), emphasizing the critical performance needed from Hurts for the Eagles to secure a win.
They discuss the Rams' offensive strategies and the significance of weather conditions, contemplating how the cold Philadelphia climate might impact the game. Myron muses, “It's going to be hard, you know, and then you got to be realistic about what the Rams have experienced” (29:28), considering external factors affecting team performance.
A spirited debate unfolds over what constitutes a "historic" NFL franchise. Initially citing the Bears, Packers, Giants, and Cowboys as top contenders, the conversation evolves to include the Steelers after listener input. Myron asserts, “I honestly think the Bears and the Giants, in terms of the spotlight on you, especially in the place you're in, are right there with them” (14:44). The hosts discuss the enduring legacy and current relevance of these teams, highlighting their significant cultural and sporting impact.
An amusing segment features a discussion about wide receiver A.J. Brown’s tendency to read books during games. Myron draws parallels to his own reading habits, noting, “I go to restaurants, Myron. Almost every night when I eat in a restaurant, I take a book with me” (32:07). They critique Brown’s behavior, debating its impact on team dynamics and public perception, while also reflecting on the importance of personal habits in maintaining focus and professionalism.
Throughout the episode, Matt and Myron engage with listener messages, addressing fan comments and humorous observations. A notable moment occurs when a technical glitch plays an unintended clip of A.J. Brown, leading to lighthearted frustration from Myron: “How was I supposed to roll with that? If I set that up and then AJ Brown comes on, what was I supposed to do?” (26:24). This segment adds a relatable and entertaining layer to the podcast, showcasing the hosts' camaraderie and ability to navigate unexpected moments.
