It'S been a fun day. Now we got Eric Goldhammer. He's the host of Hammer and Emmett on ESPN Radio 10am to 1pm at ESPN Cleveland Aaron, a lot of you know Cleveland. Here's a sentence I don't say a lot. Cleveland was the center of the universe yesterday as as the world saw Shador Sanders picked the look on the staff of the Browns faces look to be kind of like when someone tells me we have to go eat at Long John Silver's. That was kind of what the look looked to me like when when Shador was picked. What did you think of the selection of Shedeur in the fifth round and what did you make of the reaction of the GM and the staff?
Eric Goldhammer
Sunday morning on ESPN Radio presented by Long John Silver.
Myron Medcalf
I actually like Long John Silver's when, but I'm just saying you ain't ever been there. It was created in Lexington, Kentucky. My so you need to watch your mouth. I'm just saying though, it's not the most exciting thing to get.
Eric Goldhammer
No, I I I know what you're saying. I To me, I Everybody acts like they are coming up with some genius take when they say I think the owner made this pick. But if you've been around the Browns for the last 10 years like yeah, of course the owner made that pick. It's not the only quarterback this owner has picked. This owner picked Johnny Manziel. This owner decided to trade three first round picks and give Deshaun Watson $230 million. I actually think that for Jimmy Haslam this is the most sensible quarterback decision that he's made because I think there's real value in taking Shader Sanders in the fifth round. Do I think his relationship with Deion played a role? Do I think that the political climate around Shadur Sanders played a role in what the Browns decided to do? Maybe. But I look specifically at the value of the selection and I think there's a way that Is there a world in which Shedeur becomes the Browns real quarterback of the Future. Yes. And if you could take that guy in the fifth round, I, I understand why the Browns did it.
Matt Jones
I'm curious though. Gold hammer. And this is why I think a lot of teams maybe stayed away from Shador, knowing he's probably a second or third round prospect. But the other stuff makes you, you wonder because there's going to be a lot of attention on Shadow. Every press conference will be about Shador, every mini camp, every training camp conversation. Shador is going to be on first take. Like it's going to be a thing whether he's good enough or not. How do you think the Browns are going to handle that?
Eric Goldhammer
Well, the Browns invite all kinds of drama like this. I mean, they, they've been incredible at, from odell Beckham to DeShawn to Baker Mayfield. They have really invited a lot of attention. I think, though, if Shedeur is the third string quarterback, which probably is the way this is going to work out. I don't know how many first take debates you can really have about a team's third string.
Myron Medcalf
Oh, you could have them. Just listen. You can have a first take debate on anything. I'm not like, I'm not casting aspersions, but I've seen the same LeBron legacy debate 5,000 times. So you can do it if you're.
Eric Goldhammer
A third straight quarterback, though. I mean, like LeBron's playing in games every night and driving a lot of attention. I don't know how much Shadur Sanders, like, in training camp, yes. If he plays and earns playing time, fine. But I'm just saying, if he's over there sitting on the bench, you know, where he's like Tim Tebow playing tight end or whatever. I just don't know how much circus this is really going to bring to town once you get through the initial rush of training camp and whether he plays in preseason games.
Myron Medcalf
Well, okay, so let me, let me, let me ask you a bigger question. I look at that, I look at that quarterback room you got, Joe Flacco, I have to assume he's on the team and is probably the starter. Am I correct about that?
Eric Goldhammer
I think they'd love for Kenny Pickett to go and win this job, but I think what you said is probably most likely.
Myron Medcalf
All right, so Kenny Pickett, then. If they want him to win the job, those are two guys that presumably are on the roster. Does that mean that they will go into this cutting either their third or fifth round pick? I mean, is that how this is going to go?
Eric Goldhammer
Well, I think it depends. You know, I Don't think the lease on leash on Shador is going to be very long if he comes in with the attitude that he had during the pre draft process.
Myron Medcalf
Now what does that mean Aaron? I mean you were clearly Cleveland talked to him a lot. What was this attitude that. Because I'm sure you've heard at least when it came to Cleveland. What are you talking about?
Eric Goldhammer
I'm not sure that he really wanted to come to Cleveland. I'm not sure that he came in with a lot of focus and attention to detail as he went through meetings and workouts. Obviously he did something Matt that turned off the entire NFL community because the Steelers, the Raiders, the Saints, all these quarterback needy teams just like the Browns passed on him multiple times before the Browns rescued him in the fifth round. So they're hoping he comes in with an attitude 180 degrees from what it was during the pre draft process.
Myron Medcalf
And I'm saying like to me though you're not. Here's the question. I always ask this to my co most do you know something Aaron? And you don't have to say it if you don't what but it feels like you know something.
Eric Goldhammer
I just watch actions over anybody's words. I didn't have sources inside any of these meetings. No. But do I, do I see? Do I know how desperate NFL teams are for quarterbacks? Yes. Do I see how much they passed on Shadur Sanders and how often they did despite the fact that there were people who had him as the best quarterback in the draft? I mean that all tells a certain story and nobody knows exactly what to make of it. Nobody here has specifics but I can only assume based on teams actions the way this went down.
Matt Jones
I have specifics. He's not good enough. Like to me the NFL doesn't pass on quarterbacks that they think can one day maybe help them get into the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. And at the end of the day, no matter where the mock drafts had Shador, NFL teams didn't think he could be the face of a franchise. How much of this is about talent, skill in ceiling and not the other stuff? Goldhammer?
Eric Goldhammer
I think that Shedeur definitely has traits that made him a second or third round pick and the other stuff pushed him to the fifth round. But I don't think that he's in. You know if he was a Caleb Williams Andrew Luck prospect I think teams would have had no problem taking him number one or number two in the draft. So you're right that he's not like a seminal franchise with A bullet quarterback. But I also don't think he's a fifth round pick. So I think he was worth a flyer for the Browns. But when I look at this, Myron, you know, to your point, how often are those guys that are viewed as second or third round picks really successful in the NFL? It happens. Jalen. Hurts rarely, but it happens rarely. Normally we get Will Levis. I mean I was looking at the quarterbacks.
Myron Medcalf
Excuse me.
Matt Jones
Oh, go.
Eric Goldhammer
I picked it.
Myron Medcalf
That is missed. Mr. Will Levis to you.
Matt Jones
Well, just unemployed.
Eric Goldhammer
I went through the other quarterbacks taken in the fifth round because everybody loves to go, oh, Tom Brady was the 199th pick. Guys, the quarterbacks taken in the fifth round are a bunch of guys that, whose names will either make you hate.
Myron Medcalf
When people do that. I hate when people do because like what about all the, you know, like people always forget those. You're right, Aaron.
Eric Goldhammer
Yeah. And I think it's likely that that issuer Sanders, you know, it's very rare that a fifth round pick in the NFL really has a sustainable career. Again. It happens. It will happen this year. But I think the Browns looked at it by the time they got to that selection as we might as well take a flyer here. But probably their quarterback of the future is not any of the four or five. If you want to throw desean in there, guys who are currently on the roster. It's probably somebody who they're going to draft in in 2026. And, and I'll add, you know, the Gabriel and Sanders together thing, like that's not a cohesive plan. And so as somebody who follows this team day to day, it doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence that they're capable of finding the right quarterback no matter where they're drafting in 2026, that this was their plan in 2020.
Myron Medcalf
Yeah, I wouldn't have it either. I, I, I guess. Aaron, I'll finish with this. Are the Browns in a win mode next year?
Eric Goldhammer
No.
Myron Medcalf
So they're just going to be terrible again. So they're going to pick two quarterbacks in the draft to be bad.
Eric Goldhammer
I mean, I think they're taking two shots because I think maybe their quarterback philosophy is we're going to keep throwing something at the wall until it sticks. I don't know that that's a real plan, but that's what I see. The other thing that's happening here, obviously, Matt, is that there are different people making different decisions who have different ideas of the direction the team is taking. Trading down and giving up on Travis Hunter to take Mason Graham. That feels like a front office decision to be not trading Miles Garrett and signing him to a giant contract. That feels like an ownership decision to me. Taking Dylan Gabriel in the third round, the front office taking Shadow Sanders in the fifth round, that's ownership. So until you get everybody on the same page and align working together toward a vision, I mean, I think you're probably looking at one of the worst teams in football this year, but at.
Myron Medcalf
Least you have the Cavs. I just did an exercise a minute ago, Aaron, where I asked everyone on this show to close their eyes and see if they could fit picture in their mind what Evan Mobley looked like, what his face looked like, and the big debate was whether or not he has hair. That's how well known he is outside of the city.
Matt Jones
I knew him well.
Eric Goldhammer
You know, I think we're headed towards a war of a conference finals between the Cavs and I think, I think.
Myron Medcalf
It'S gonna be great.
Eric Goldhammer
So let's play that exercise out a month from now and see and then.
Myron Medcalf
When Todd signs $100 million deal next year, it'll be even better. Eric Goldhammer Host a Emmett on ESPN Radio Saturdays 10 to 1 thank you very much for your time man.

There it is Sunday Morning Matt Myron here on ESPN Radio. During the entire commercial break, Myron was ranting about waffles, which tells you where his mind is going into this pick segment. I've never seen a man more anti waffle. But we are not here at Sunday Morning because we're presented by Progressive Insurance. And guess what? The NBA playoffs are on ESPN Radio. But you didn't know that. Well, you did, because you've been listening. Catch postseason action on ESPN Radio, the ESPN app, presented by. Indeed. I like listening to the games on the radio. Get to Hear a little PJ Carlissimo sometimes. Very exciting stuff.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like PJs J. Billis, by the way.
Myron Medcalf
Start getting on these NBA games.
Matt Jones
Like, I was newer.
Myron Medcalf
I was listening to that game last night, and I'm like, am I watching Duke, Clemson right now? Like, what is Jake Willis doing here? When did that start?
Matt Jones
I think I want to say last couple of years. I think he's been doing NBA. NBA stuff.
Myron Medcalf
So for him, good for Jay. Also a fellow Duke Law grad, Myron. Did you know that?
Matt Jones
I didn't know that.
Myron Medcalf
Duke Law print. Can I give you some real quick? Duke Law grads, Richard Nixon, Kenneth Starr, Matthew Jones. That's me, Jay Billis and Quinn Snyder, all Duke Law grads.
Matt Jones
Y'all still claim Richard Nixon?
Myron Medcalf
I mean, we don't like to claim Richard Nixon, but in the. In the. If you go in the basement of Duke Law, there's a picture of every class that graduated there since World War II. And Richard Nixon's class that he's in the picture. And let me say, at the age of like, 27 when he graduated law school, he looked exactly like he did as he was being escorted out of the presidency. Same face. He looks 60 at 27 years old.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Nixon. I don't know if I leave with him anymore, but, yeah, that's an esteemed class.
Myron Medcalf
That is an esteemed class, especially with me, Billis and Quinn Snyder. All right, it is now time to take your pick.
Mikey
Take your pick.
Matt Jones
You take your pick. It's time to take your pick on Sunday morning.
Myron Medcalf
Well, it's time to pick our games. We got Mikey here ready to go. What's up?
Mikey
First, I need some music. All right. Like you were saying, if you're listening, you know that there's NBA playoffs coming up next. Actually, right after us, we got the Knicks at Pistons right here in ESPN Radio. Knicks lead the series two games to one, but Detroit's favored on espn, bet by two and a half points. Myron.
Matt Jones
I mean, they've been battling, you know, but I just think the Knicks, it's a talent thing. You're playing a young team that hasn't been here before. I think that's your advantage. I think they'll come out fighting, obviously, in the Motor City, but give me the Knicks.
Myron Medcalf
Yeah, I. This has been a great series in terms of just, you know, going at each other Physia. Stewart was dressing out for these games. There'd be a lot more blood on the floor. But he is. I like when there's a fight, they go to him. Even though he's on the bench every time. I'm gonna take the Pistons to win this one, this series, I think it's gonna go seven. The Knicks will win the seventh in the Garden, but it's gonna be two. Two, because I think the Pistons win today. Who's up next?
Mikey
All right. Also 3:30 on ABC, you got the Lakers at Timberwolves. ESPN bet has Minnesota favored by two and a half points with them up two games to one. Hopefully Luke is over his stomach bug. Myron?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I said this from the beginning. You know, this is just a bad matchup, I think, for the Timberwolves, who just don't really. I mean, for the Lakers, who don't really have the size to deal with the Timberwolves. And then you're dealing with some young guys who in the fourth quarter, they just keep going. LeBron can be the best player on the court for three quarters. The fourth quarter is where 40 starts to show up and the defensive breakdowns happen. The Timberwolves are just a bad matchup. They'll win again today.
Myron Medcalf
I think the Lakers win today. I kind of feel the same way about the series that, you know, they got to steal this one. This is. This is why you made the trade for. For Luca. Is today on game four on the road, get a victory. I think it happens. Give me the Lakers to win in Minnesota. What's next?
Mikey
All right, then later tonight, 7pm you got the Celtics at the Magic. Boston favored by 7 1/2 points on ESPN BET. Hopefully it doesn't get too physical for them, though.
Myron Medcalf
My Boston's up there. All right, let me just. While we're talking, I'm gonna make my bet. Boston wins this game by 20 plus points. Boston runs them off the court. They lost game three. That's the. That's the one they give up Boston by. Go ahead. Mine. You do your thing. I gotta place a bet here.
Matt Jones
Well, I mean, the Boston injury report before game three had like six people on it, right? I mean, so they're not 100%. Jaylen Brown, I think questionable, I believe, with a right knee thing. But I think Boston wins this. You know, they. What's going to happen is they've complained so much about the physicality that the refs are going to give them every single call in this game. So. So Boston, by officiating advantage I just made the bet.
Myron Medcalf
That's the. This is my Matt Jones. Duke Law. Stone cold lock of the week is Boston to cover the seven points today. Who's next?
Mikey
All right, then, the nightcap tonight. 9:30, you got the Pacers at the Milwaukee Bucks. ESPN bet has Milwaukee favored by four and a half points while the Pacers lead the series two games to one.
Myron Medcalf
This is a tough one here, Myron. I think. I think I like the Pacers. I think Milwaukee's been lucky to be in any of these games. They did play well in the last one, but I'm gonna take Indiana to go up 3:1. I think they're just the better team in this year.
Matt Jones
Well, first off, I want to thank the NBA that I can watch this game. This series has been on bet and then the last three years, three games. Give me Milwaukee, though. I can't bet against Milwaukee. Milwaukee will win this game, and I hope this year's. But they'll win tonight. They have to win tonight.
Myron Medcalf
All right, what's next?
Mikey
I might as well pick the games tomorrow night. Of course. 7:30 tomorrow. You got the Cavs at heat. Cleveland trying to finish off the sweep. Guys.
Myron Medcalf
What do you got, Myron? This one. Let's see. The Cavs are. Well, the Cavs are an 8 1/2 point favorite, Myron.
Matt Jones
That's a big, big number. But I think Cleveland wins this. I mean, the thing about Cleveland and OKC is if you watch the regular season, they were so dominant. I mean, this Cleveland team has been, I believe, the most efficient offense in the NBA. Obviously a top defense. Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell and Darius Garland have one of the top back courts in the NBA despite their anonymity. Evan Mobley and everything that he's able to do, he's such a unique presence in the paint on both side the floor. Cleveland wins this and I think they can beat anybody in the east, including Boston, and make it to the finals and have a chance to win a championship.
Myron Medcalf
All right, what's next?
Mikey
And then also tomorrow night, Rockets.
Myron Medcalf
By the way, I'm taking Cleveland as well. I forgot he went first. Give me Cleveland. Go ahead.
Mikey
And then tomorrow night, Rockets at Warriors. Golden State right now favored by three and a half points on ESPN bet. And they lead the series two games to one.
Myron Medcalf
See this one? That is a toss up to me because, yeah, in these close series, I generally will take the team that's down to one in Game 4. But Golden State's at home. If they're going to win the series, they need this one. I'm still going to take the Rockets to go on the road and get the win. But this game could go either way. Myron, I think this will be the best game of the six we've talked about.
Matt Jones
No, I think. I think it will be. I mean, the Draymond trash talk, he's certainly getting into their heads a little bit. Will Jimmy Butler play? I mean, that's still the biggest question. Is he going to be available? If he's not, and I don't think he will be. And even if he is, he's 100%. I picked the Rockets, I think, to even that series, there's two games I.
Myron Medcalf
Don'T think you have on there. Do you. Do you have my. Carolina Hurricanes versus the New Jersey Devils, Mikey.
Mikey
Oh, no. Yeah. I should have put hockey.
Myron Medcalf
Yeah. 3:00. Carolina Hurricanes versus the Devils. Canes are up to one, but they're in New Jersey, Myron. Last game went to double overtime. The Canes have lost nine straight playoff overtime games. Who you got today?
Matt Jones
I'm gonna pick the Canes. I think to win this one, I'm.
Myron Medcalf
Gonna take the Cane. Canes are better. Devils have everybody hurt. We need to win this one. What's next, Mikey?
Mikey
How about the Capitals at Canadiens right now? Game for that series. Washington leads a series two games to one.
Myron Medcalf
I've been following this whole. Alex Ovechkin, you know, when he broke the record. Alex Ovechkin is an amazing player. He looks 74 years old and he's still playing. I'm impressed. I mean, his hair is like the gr. And they. He looks like Santa Claus and he's still playing and playing well. So give me the Capitals, because a man that looks that haggardly and is still able to play. I'm impressed.
Matt Jones
I think Oveskin is the first player in NHL history to go from 29 to 39. I mean, I like. I don't think he showed, you know, his age in between those years. Right. But I'm not going to pick against the team that has the record breaker.
Myron Medcalf
He looks like the protagonist of a Robert Frost poem or something, and yet he's still out there playing hockey. I'm very impressed. What?
Matt Jones
When you say stuff like the protagonist of a Robert Frost poem. I know what kids you hung out with in elementary school. Like, when I hear that, I know exactly the group you sat with.
Myron Medcalf
Is that the kind of makes me not invited to the barber shop?
Eric Goldhammer
No.
Matt Jones
Or the. See, I don't. I just know what table you were sitting at in the cafeteria. When you say the protagonist of a Robert Frost party. I understand exactly where you were sitting in that lunchroom.
Myron Medcalf
Whose woods these are, I think I know. My house is in the Village, though. All right. This has been Sunday morning Matt Myron, right here on the ESPN Radio.

Summary of "Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron"
Episode: Hour 3: Browns' Wild QB Room
Release Date: April 27, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf
Guest: Eric Goldhammer
The episode opens with Myron Medcalf introducing Eric Goldhammer, host of "Hammer and Emmett" on ESPN Radio Cleveland. The primary focus quickly shifts to the Cleveland Browns' recent draft decision involving quarterback Shador Sanders.
Myron Medcalf [00:32]:
"Cleveland was the center of the universe yesterday as the world saw Shador Sanders picked. The look on the staff's faces was kind of like when someone tells me we have to go eat at Long John Silver's."
Eric Goldhammer provides an in-depth analysis of the Browns selecting Shador Sanders in the fifth round, contextualizing it within the team's history of quarterback selections.
Eric Goldhammer [01:29]:
"I actually think that for Jimmy Haslam this is the most sensible quarterback decision that he's made because I think there's real value in taking Shador Sanders in the fifth round."
Goldhammer acknowledges the potential value Sanders brings despite concerns about his relationship with Deion Sanders and the political climate surrounding his selection. He emphasizes the rarity of fifth-round quarterbacks making a significant impact in the NFL.
Goldhammer [07:53]:
"And I think it’s likely that Shador Sanders, you know, it’s very rare that a fifth-round pick in the NFL really has a sustainable career."
The discussion delves into the reactions from the Browns' management and coaching staff regarding Sanders' selection. Goldhammer believes the front office may have varying opinions, leading to potential inconsistency in the team's quarterback strategy.
Goldhammer [08:52]:
"Taking Dylan Gabriel in the third round, the front office taking Shador Sanders in the fifth round, that's ownership. So until you get everybody on the same page and align working together toward a vision..."
Matt Jones raises concerns about the sustainability of the Browns' quarterback choices, questioning whether Sanders will genuinely compete for the starting role or remain a third-string option.
Matt Jones [02:34]:
"How do you think the Browns are going to handle that?"
Goldhammer responds by highlighting the Browns' history of attracting attention with their quarterback decisions, suggesting that the circus may subside if Sanders doesn't earn significant playing time.
Goldhammer [07:53]:
"Normal, we get Will Levis. I mean, I was looking at the quarterbacks..."
The conversation shifts to the broader implications of the Browns' management decisions, including trades and draft picks, indicating a lack of cohesive strategy that could hinder the team's performance.
Goldhammer [08:52]:
"Trading down and giving up on Travis Hunter to take Mason Graham. That feels like a front office decision to be not trading Miles Garrett and signing him to a giant contract."
Myron Medcalf questions whether the Browns are entering the next season in "win mode," to which Goldhammer pessimistically responds that the team is likely not aiming for immediate success.
Myron Medcalf [09:02]:
"Are the Browns in a win mode next year?"
Goldhammer [09:10]:
"I think you're probably looking at one of the worst teams in football this year..."
Shifting gears, the hosts transition to discussing the NBA playoffs, offering their predictions on various series.
Matt Jones favors the Knicks, citing their talent advantage over the younger Pistons squad.
Matt Jones [17:34]:
"I think the Knicks, it's a talent thing. You're playing a young team that hasn't been here before... give me the Knicks."
Conversely, Myron Medcalf believes the Pistons will prevail in the current game, forecasting a seven-game series.
Myron Medcalf [17:34]:
"...I'm gonna take the Pistons to win this one, this series, I think it's gonna go seven."
Matt Jones supports the Timberwolves, citing matchup disadvantages for the Lakers.
Matt Jones [18:12]:
"The Timberwolves are just a bad matchup. They'll win again today."
Myron Medcalf, however, leans towards the Lakers, emphasizing their need to secure a victory on the road.
Myron Medcalf [18:35]:
"Give me the Lakers to win in Minnesota."
Both hosts predict a Celtics win, with Myron Medcalf confidently betting on Boston to cover the point spread.
Myron Medcalf [19:04]:
"Boston to cover the seven points today."
Myron Medcalf opts for the Pacers, believing Milwaukee has been fortunate in the series.
Myron Medcalf [20:10]:
"I think they're just the better team this year."
Matt Jones, however, stands by Milwaukee's ability to win, especially in high-stakes games.
Matt Jones [20:24]:
"Milwaukee will win this game, and I hope this year's. But they'll win tonight."
Both hosts agree on favoring the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Rockets over their opponents, citing team efficiency and key player performances.
Myron Medcalf [20:56]:
"Let me just. This one. Give me Cleveland."
Matt Jones [21:29]:
"Cleveland wins this and I think they can beat anybody in the east..."
Matt Jones supports the Hurricanes, believing in their ability to overcome a struggling Devils team.
