Yeah. Tough day for Myron with the intro music. We are counting you down to kick off here in terms of a couple things. First of all, in Cleveland, two fans, Desiree and Charles Bevel, who go by first lady and Brown Spider of Cleveland Browns football, that's their nicknames. They got married today Outside of the Cleveland Brown Stadium. The wedding is on TV right now. The bridesmaids dressed as cheerleaders, the groomsmen dressed as Browns players, and they had a wedding. Is that a romantic way to get married?

[Myron]

I mean, if they're both super fans, I mean, judging by the people out there, like, that's a special group of people. Like, they're all in the same kind of group. So, I mean, for them, I'm sure that was kind of like, what is that group? Not a super fan. You know, that's a different kind of.

[Matt]

I like that he. Brown spider of Browns football. As if everyone would know that. I'll tell you, it ended up on espn, though. Yeah.

[Myron]

I mean, you got to be bold to go by brown spot. And then the dude who married him was dressed like Batman, I think.

[Matt]

Yeah, right.

[Myron]

Yeah.

So it was a classic different kind of group chat.

I haven't seen this morning's Sunday New York Times. I don't know if it was listed amongst the weddings this weekend, but, no.

I don't think they had a wedding planner. You know, this is all. This is all planned in a group text like, 24 hours ago, probably.

[Matt]

All right. So are you going to shed a tear of emotional happiness slash sadness when Aaron Rodgers comes back to his home with the jets today in a return that will certainly stir emotions, shed any tears?

[Myron]

But I. I am interested to see, you know, if there's anything left. I think everybody is, but I think we've already seen the signs that this is a guy who is just not the same Aaron Rodgers, not close to the guy we saw at the MVP level, not the guy we saw pre Achilles. And then the question will be, how does Mike Tomlin handle Aaron Rodgers? Like, I. I don't. Mike. Tom was saying all the right things, but Aaron Rodgers is going to put you in some difficult spots because he's gonna make comments whether you like it or not.

[Matt]

Well, I have been, as anyone who's listening to this show knows, slightly critical of Aaron Rodgers over the last three years, but can I. Let me. Let me try to balance it with this. This has been the quietest training camp that Aaron Rodgers has had in the last few years. I haven't seen him in the news as much. He hasn't come out and, you know, joined the vaccine squad at the cdc. I mean, like, he's been sort of more normal this year than. Than in the last few. Could the Steelers kind of good culture be rubbing off on him?

[Myron]

No, because you and I both know that once the games start, and they start today. The other thing is, you know, he's going to be featured on all these shows every time he talks. So this is where Aaron Rodgers put you in the most difficult spot. Now, if they're winning, it'll be great.

[Matt]

But I mean, they, the Steelers have a massive media following. They have people at every practice. I mean, he's been interviewed presumably all August, and there hasn't been anything. I mean, maybe, maybe.

[Myron]

Well, the buzz, I think was sort of like, is he coming back? Right. Is he going to play for Pittsburgh? So that was more of the buzz. And when he showed up, by the time he did, we were in Shador Sanders mode as media. We were trying to cover all these other storylines, but now is where people will really be paying a lot of attention. Um, is he gonna do McAfee or other shows on his own during the week? I don't know. But this feels like a different thing compared to what the Steelers are all about, which is everything's in house. You keep everything private. Mike Tomlin doesn't say a whole lot. How do you deal with your starting quarterback being one of the more outspoken people in the whole league?

[Matt]

All right, well, that's a practical matter if you want to. I mean, the only reason to get Aaron Rodgers is if you think you're going to go the playoffs in the win playoff game. So if you want to go to the playoffs in an afc, that's kind of loade you got to win the first game against the Jets. Right. Like that's in addition to being this quote unquote reunion. And the first time we see Aaron with the Steelers, it's also kind of an important game, isn't it?

[Myron]

Yeah. These are kind of games that you win if you're a playoff team, right?

[Matt]

Yes.

[Myron]

If you're a team that's going to be competitive, you got to beat the Jets. Justin Fields, I think this is the first time in NFL history that quarterbacks that played for the other team are facing off in week one. Right. So you know, Justin Fields, I think they have a lot in.

[Matt]

In New York talks about his reunion with Pittsburgh.

[Myron]

Nobody cares. Nobody cared about his reunion. They didn't call it a reunion. They just said, oh, oh, Jay is back. That's all they said with him. But. But Breeze hall, you know, Braylon Allen, I think the run game with the jets might be the most established thing in this game. Can Aaron Rodgers find DK Metcalf? You know, is he going to be able to use his weapons? I don't know. But I think Justin Fields has an easier game plan and way to beat.

[Matt]

Do you think DK Metcalf is still a thing in terms of a player that, you know, there are certain times, especially with receivers that we keep saying their name, but it's not what we think. It's a different version. Do you think DK is still DK on some level?

[Myron]

Yeah. I mean, healthy, he's one of the more consistent receivers. I think he's one of four or five NFL receivers who's had at least 900 plus yards six consecutive seasons. But the question is, to your point, is he big play DK Metcalf? We saw injured DK Metcalf last year. Can Aaron Rodgers help him get back to being what the star that I think a lot of people hope he can.

[Matt]

You just have if you're the Steelers, you're sitting there going, look, if six years ago I'd gotten Aaron Rodgers DK Metcalf, I'd be dancing. Now I have a different version six years later. Is that version something to celebrate or is it a sign of impending doom? And I don't know that we'll know that, but we're going to get a good first glimpse of it today.

[Myron]

Yep. Big, big moment.

[Matt]

Well, you also have. You got Steve Levy there with you. Courtney Cronin is on the sidelines. So let's start with this. I mean, you know Aaron Rodgers, everything he goes, that's. It's always about him. So give me, give me. In your mind after you've been around the teams, how has Aaron Rodgers.

[Myron]

It seems like he's not been as.

[Matt]

Big a distraction to the Steelers as maybe I thought he would be in the preseason. Is that the vibe you've gotten? And then what is the feeling around the jets organization about the return of Aaron today?

[Sal Palantonio]

Well, I think everybody's just anticipating what he will look like on the field going up against the jets defense. I think that's the number one thing. And when I talked to Mike Tomlin earlier outside the Steelers locker room for Sunday NFL Countdown, I said, what is the one thing that you have seen from Aaron Rodgers this week that tells you he is prepared mentally and physically and from a football sense to take on this challenge of playing the Jets? And he said he was very good in situational football, very good in the red area, very accurate, very good on third down. And he said, that's where we're going to win and lose the football game. Points are going to be at a premium. He knows that Aaron Glenn is going to heat up Aaron Rodgers early and often in the game. Now, Rodgers is tough to blitz, as we all know. He has the answers to the test pre snap, always has. That's what's made him so diabolical as a quarterback. But with Aaron Glenn, you know, he's just not going to give up the blitz. It's in his DNA. He coached under Rex Ryan and Rex Ryan, of course, that was Buddy ryan in the 46 defense that won the super bowl against the New England Patriots when he was at the Chicago Bears. By the way, you know, Buddy Ryan was the defensive coordinator when the jets beat the Baltimore Colts in 1969. He was wee Bunk's defensive coordinator.

[Matt]

Reference. Nice. I love it.

[Sal Palantonio]

I mean, come on, you know, I. Not for nothing, I'm off the rails here, but Buddy Ryan should be in.

[Myron]

The hall of Fame.

[Sal Palantonio]

He authored two of the greatest defensive performances in super bowl history. Super Bowl 3. And then when the Bears basically went on that historic run in 85.

[Myron]

Well, I think the defensive effort of the jets obviously will be a big factor into this game. How do you think Sauce Gardner matched up against DK Metcalf? How does that affect the outcome of this game?

[Sal Palantonio]

Well, the thing about when you look at the Steelers offense, boss, I mean there's lots of places to go with the football. The one thing that Aaron Rodgers went out of his way to talk about this week was the quality of the defense, of the offense's versatility, specifically the tight end room. He said, and I'm quoting here, this is the best tight end room I've had in my 21 year career. Now that's saying something with Darnell Washington, John Ou Smith, Pat Freiermuth. So I mean, this is a, this is a good tight end group. They weren't very popular, productive throwing the ball over the middle last year with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. But you know, he's got plenty of places to go with the football. And then I'm not even mentioning Calvin Austin iii, who's another option for him. So they've got plenty of places to go with the football. But I think in this particular game you have to get the pass attempts down on Aaron Rodgers. Let me just put this out there. Last year Aaron Rodgers threw the ball for 584 times. 584 times. At that age now with the Jets, I mean, only Joe Burrow had more attempts than Aaron Rodgers last year. That's way too many. Just to give you put it into perspective, jalen hurts had 200 less passing attempts last year and won the Super Bowl. You have to have balance on your offense. That's why you got Jalen Warren, you got Connor Hayward. And I think to me they've got to achieve better balance. Arthur Smith's got to be calling the number and the run game in order to beat the jets in this game.

[Matt]

But today is when the season starts, right? Today is when everybody gets excited about their favorite team going out and seeing what they can do, man. And I can't wait to exaggerate whatever happens this weekend. Yes, that's my favorite part about the NFL is that we will exaggerate whatever happens. And by week eight, we won't even care. We won't even mention it. Like, that's the best part about our jobs, Matt. We can say outlandish stuff this day. Nobody remembers. No one cares. And we can say more outlandish stuff a week from now and just keep doing it that way.

Here was the headline, Kentucky nurse revives drunk raccoon found in dumpster. That's a good headline, right? A raccoon is drunk in a dumpster. A Kentucky nurse, a good Samaritan, sees said raccoon drunk in the dumpster and says, I'm not just going to let dumpster, dumpster, raccoon situation. I'm gonna revive it. And then with video, she is able to give CPR to the raccoon and revive it. And it survives thanks to this nurse. And you're probably thinking, what amazing angel is that? Well, the answer is Misty Rogers Combs from Whitesburg, Kentucky. And I have been able to bring to get her to come on. And she is going to be our celebrity guest picker and tell us the story, the raccoon, and then pick games. Are you excited? It's gonna be.

I'm doing wonderful, Misty. Now, I read the story you this week found a drunk raccoon in a dumpster and you gave it cpr. It's an amazing headline, but give me quickly some details.

[Misty Combs]

So the raccoon I found in a dumpster and it had got so Drunk. It had fell over into some water and it had drowned. And I was able to get it out of the dumpster, and it was dead or close to dead. It was not breathing. So I did CPR on it, and I was able to bring it back to life. And it's living now.

[Matt]

That's awesome. Now let's go.

[Myron]

Do we know how it got drunk?

[Matt]

How did it get drunk?

[Misty Combs]

So the dumpster was at a moonshine distillery, and they had put their fermented peaches in that dumpster, and it had got in there with one of its siblings, and it had eight. Those peaches, apparently all night until it had got so drunk it couldn't eat anymore.

[Matt]

You like that, Myron? That happens sometimes.

[Myron]

Amazing. It's an amazing story.

[Matt]

All right, so you see the drunk peach eating raccoon in the dumpster. Most people would see that and just keep walking. What made you decide to save it?

[Misty Combs]

Well, I'm a nurse, and I'm also a mother, and its mom was standing close by, and she was making, like, some chitter chatter noise. And I think she was trying to get our attention, like she wanted us to help it. And, I mean, I'm an animal lover. So I went over there and I got it, and I just started doing chest compressions and beating on its back a little to get that water out of its lungs, and it. It finally started breathing again.

[Matt]

So you did CPR on a raccoon?

[Misty Combs]

I did. I did.

[Matt]

That is awesome, Misty. Seriously, you are a saint. No one else would do that. So once it was over, did it. Thank you.

[Misty Combs]

Well, it was still drunk, so it slept the rest of the day, and we sent it to the vet. The Fish and Wildlife came and got it, but they brought it back to me the next day. I was sort of shocked they did that, and I got to turn it loose back where its mom lives there at the health department that I work at.

[Matt]

That is awesome. Well, good. I'm glad it's a happy ending. Misty, I love that you shared the story. That is Letcher county and Appalachia in a nutshell. We help each other, and, Misty, we even help the raccoons. Right?
