This is Matt and Myron the Podcast three actually be a half hour today because we have an NBA game, Celtics, knicks coming at 12:30 but it is Sunday morning here on ESPN radio. Matt Jones, Myron Metcalf getting you ready. We're going to do our picks. Plus I got very excited. They told me during the break Myron, Kalina Azabuki is going to be on here as the ESPN Radio NBA analyst, former Kentucky Wildcat I idea. It made me excited. Kina one of the strongest looking high school or college dudes I ever remember in Lexington.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, man, he was a star. Played with Tubby. I remember Clin a bookie and, and then you know, he was one of the best stories. He was one of the first guys to go from a G league deal to getting called up and getting an NBA contract.
Matt Jones
Is that right? I didn't know that.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, he's one of the first guys.
Matt Jones
He was, he was on the Kentucky team in 03 that was so good that then Dwayne Wade beat to go to the Final Four.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Jones
And Tubby one time Tubby would get frustrated when he wouldn't play physical and he cause Kalina was cut like he was in the best shape of anybody ever in college. And Tubby said Kalinda looks like Tarzan plays like Jane. That was one of his comments. He said and it may, and it may. But you know what, it made Kalina tougher. I think he, when he, when he said that Tubby.
Myron Metcalf
I don't know if that's Tubby.
Matt Jones
Tubby. And you know Tubby would say things sometimes.
Myron Metcalf
He would say that.
Matt Jones
He just said he would say things sometimes. That was, that would be what he would do. Well, I'm looking forward to talking to Clint. I'm also looking forward to this week. Clemson plays Virginia on Saturday. I'm actually not looking forward to that game but I will listen to it on ESPN Radio because there is a new play by play host James. I don't know if you saw this new play by play radio host Myron Metcalf Saturday for the Clemson Virginia game.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that old, the, the young up and comer, Meyer, Metcalf. Yeah.
Matt Jones
I mean, we're giving a chance to all the kids today. Myron, are you excited? This is the first time you've ever done radio play by play. And Clemson, Virginia, I mean, what a great game to get started. Are you looking forward to it?
Myron Metcalf
No, I am, man. I'm excited, man. Anytime ESPN gives me an opportunity to, you know, grow and to do something new, I love it. I'm, I've done TV play by play. I've been a part of ESPN broadcast in the past. But yeah, this is a, it's a good opportunity, man.
Matt Jones
We never yet radio play by play. Right. Because that's a different, different beats.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that'll be a first. So I'm, I'm looking forward to it though.
Matt Jones
Well, I'm, I'm excited to watch you. Are you nervous at all about it?
Myron Metcalf
No, no, I'm not nervous. No catch.
Matt Jones
Not even ready.
Myron Metcalf
What's the worst that could happen? I'm terrible.
Matt Jones
I mean, you know, I mean. No, you're not gonna be terrible. You're gonna be great. Speaking of great, our ESPN radio that is coming up here next for Celtics, Knicks, former Kentucky Wildcat, Kalin Azabuki. Kalina, I do Kentucky sports radio in Lexington and when they said you were coming on, I didn't know. I got so excited. You dunked so hard in 2003 against Vandy on Senior Night that Rupp's rim is still shaking K from that dunk. It's nice to talk to you, nostalgia.
Great to talk to you too, man. We bleed blue. I love it. I love talking to a wildcat. Or I'm just going to consider you a wildcat since you.
I am a wild play. Let's tell everybody. Kalina, if Keith, if Keith Bogans doesn't turn his ankle. Dwyane Wade never gets his triple double in 03. Right?
Seriously, like, I wanted to get some more minutes in that game just because I felt like I could help, you know, Like Keith is kind of laboring a little bit. Dwyane Wade is doing whatever he wants to out here. His big man had like 25 or something just off of him. Like they went 14 flat in that game, pretty much the whole game, and just let him go ISO top of the key and he was just regulating the whole game. And I felt so bad for Keith because he's a really good defender. He's became a much better defender after. I think Kentucky and Toby Smith had a big Part to do with that too. But man, that ankle was, was bothering him clearly a lot. In Dwyane Wade, I feel like we're a big part of the reason he got dropped. Drafted as high as he did, he was obviously going to be drafted super high anyway. But that game, people were like, oh, wait a minute, this dude is legit.
Crazy Celtics, Knicks today, you know, both of these teams, this is a rivalry that everybody enjoys. Where do you think these two teams are going? You think their, their trajectories are up or down heading in as we move closer to the playoffs?
Well, definitely the Celtics trajectory is up. Their, their last 11 games, their shooting percentages are better than what they were earlier in the season. They had a little bit of an offensive slump there for a while in December, like mid December to late January or something like that, but playing much better lately. And they rely on the three ball so much and I feel like their shot quality lately has been a little better. They go a ton of ISO, they get into the paint, they kick it out so that they're getting better looks and they're making more of them. So that's how they roll. And I think they're getting a little more from their bench than people might think. They're actually second and plus minus, even though they're 26th in bench points. Bench plus minus I'm talking about. So Peyton, Pritchard, Horford, those guys coming in. Peyton Pritchard is so solid when it comes to pick and rolls. Obviously his three point shooting is great, but he can get to the mid range, he can get all the way to the rim. So they can rely on him a whole bunch. He gives him good production off the bench. But for the Knicks, I'm not going to say they're, they have a downward trajectory. They're still third in the East. It's just defensively they've been struggling like crazy this month. And if you look at the Knicks against the best teams in the league, the Cavaliers, the Thunder, the Celtics, the best teams record wise, they really struggled defensively. They're.06 against those teams.02 against the Celtics. And it's been about their defense and those games haven't necessarily been close and they struggle to guard the three ball. Their 30th and opponent three point shooting percentage. And of course if you can't guard the three ball against the Celtics, you're going to have a really, really long night and sometimes it'll be over early if they get down big early on. So it's just about competing for The Celtics, and it starts on the defensive end. I think for anybody to take them seriously when it comes to actually making some noise in the playoffs, going deep, making a deep run like they would like to, they need to be better against the best teams in the league and have better showings and competing better. So we just talked to Tibbs and defensively, he wants to see more activity, the point of attack, making sure they pick up and then just sprinting back, making sure the teams don't get whatever they want to in transition. Because offensively they're a great team. They're actually a better offensive team than the Celtics, the numbers say. And they're actually a better three point shooting team in the Celtics percentage wise. They just don't shoot as many threes as the Celtics. But they got to get it defensively if they really want to make some noise down the stretch.
Myron Metcalf
What do you think will happen if they, you know, get healthy? Mitchell Robinson. Mitchell Robinson gets back at some point. If this Knicks team is fully healthy, what does that mean for this team?
Matt Jones
I think that's the biggest thing. I mean, them getting OG and Obi back last game is huge. Once he gets his rhythm back, he can cause havoc. Josh Hart is warming up. Think he's going to play tonight. Like those guys make a big difference for them when it comes to guarding the three ball and it comes to guarding the paint all over the floor. So I think that's been one of their biggest things, just getting healthy. You mentioned Mitchell, that size helping Karl Anthony Towns out on the defensive side. So it's something that a lot of teams have had to deal with when it comes to health and making sure everybody's in uniform. And that's going to be a big key for, for the Knicks. If they can be all the way healthy down the stretch, they'll probably be much better forward, especially defensively.
Clinton, we'll get you out with this. Golden State. You obviously do a lot of their games and have for a number of years now after the Jimmy Butler trade, is there. Is there an upside there that is. Is high? I mean, can that team do something going into the playoffs or are they still kind of a middle of the pack group?
I think they can. They're all super excited. Obviously Draymond Green's guaranteed a championship and.
Yeah, that's not everybody. I mean like today. But do you believe they can do it?
Well, that. But that signifies the confidence level and Jimmy Butler has raised the team confidence level, the team belief. And they're a more balanced team offensively. They're not as one dimensional. Like if they just struggle with their three point shooting or they're shooting overall, they're going to lose a game. No, they can get into the paint now. The last five games they've been pretty much at the top of the league when it comes to free throw attempts. And the warriors being at the top of the league for any stretch when it comes to free throw attempts is a big deal. And that's Jimmy Butler. And actually the way he plays is contagious because now other guys are throwing their bodies in there and, and getting to the free throw line and drawing that contact, seeking out bodies, not avoiding contact, drop, trying to finish through contact. They're making more free throws where all throughout the year they've been 30th in free throw percentage and they've been in so many clutch games, I think they're tied for the most clutch games of the season or close to that. And to have to be 30th in the league in free throw shooting percentage has really hurt them. So going forward, there's definitely an upward trajectory there. They had a great game against the Kings, the first game for them after All Star break, and everybody's feeling good about that. But I think Jimmy brings that adult in the room vibe, really calm presence, big presence, he's a lion. And again, the belief of the team, the confidence level is through the roof right now. And they're just looking to go on this 26 game sprint and not have any letdowns because that's been one of the biggest things for them. They've really struggled when it comes to putting teams away. They've tricked off so many games that they should have won like seven or eight games that they lost that they should have definitely won. They were games that were either pretty much won and somehow they found a way to lose clutch minutes. They were terrible and they turned the ball over, whatever it was, or their shot selection wasn't great. Like the last Dallas game they lost. Dallas had no bigs basically and they didn't take advantage of it enough. They didn't go inside enough. Their shot selection wasn't great. So it's just things like that where they're like, okay, if we can do away with some of those games where we're, we're letting teams back in it and we have our foot on the team's neck and we let off and we let loose and the team gets back in the game. If we can do away with that with Jimmy Butler, now you got another guy who can close. Another guy that doesn't turn the ball over, which is huge. That that's going to be key for them. So they're really confident right now and they just want to see if they can be a little better with this closing stretch than they were like midway through the season. They want to get back to how they started the season.
Clinton od Zavuki in my years of covering Kentucky basketball, without question top five dunker of all time admiring the most cut player that ever played for Kentucky basketball. I mean there's never been a dude that was more muscular and cut during his Kentucky years than Clint Ozabuki. Thank you very much. Enjoy the Celtics Knicks game.
I appreciate that. Thanks for having me, guys. That's big. I don't take that lightly. I appreciate.
Thank you very much. You can tune into action today. The Celtics and the Knicks presented by indeed coverage against at 1230 Eastern on ESPN radio and ESPN app. What are you laughing at, Myron? He was. He was.
Myron Metcalf
If someone just tuned in and only called the end of that interview, that might be a little interesting to them.
Matt Jones
Like why would it be interesting? I was talking about Kentucky basketball.
Myron Metcalf

Matt Jones
Why you got to be rude all the time that you, you just always rude like you always think you just make our.

It is Sunday morning on ESPN Radio. Final segment presented by Progressive Insurance Matt Jones and Myron Metcalf. It is Sunday and when we do this we end the show by giving you the picks of all the big games that are coming today. It is take your pick. A lot going on all around the world of sports. Mikey, give us the games. We'll tell you who's going to win.
Mikey
All right, you guys were talking about the four nations face off earlier. If you still got a little bit of a hockey itch and want to scratch it. 1pm today you got the Washington Capitals at the New York Rangers. Alex ovechkin is only 16 goals away from breaking Gretzky's all time record for goals. Matt, who you got?
Matt Jones
I'm going to take the Rangers. Been playing well recently and you know they got well actually. When is this game in New York or is it in Washington?
Mikey
In New York.
Matt Jones
Yeah, but I thought the Knicks were playing in that there in Boston. All right, so if they're Rangers at home, the home crowd, they'll get the victory even though the Capitals have the best record in the NHL. I'll take the Rangers. Myers.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think I had to take the Capitals. Obviously playing the best hockey in the NHL right now. And obviously Ovechkin is chasing history, so I'll go with the Capitals.
Matt Jones
You still with us over there, Byron? He didn't say.
Myron Metcalf
What do you mean by that?
Matt Jones
It was like you were.
Myron Metcalf
What did I say wrong?
Matt Jones
Well, you just didn't sound very excited about this game. I thought you'd be more into it. You were just saying, man. Yeah, well, I just want you to give me some light. That's fine. Who's up next?
Mikey
All right, if you also got a little bit of an international competition. Yeah. We've Got women's soccer, 5pm today. The she Believes Cup Team USA versus Australia. Myron, what's it called?
Myron Metcalf
Oh, man.
Mikey
She Believes cup presented by Visa will take place this week, features the world's top ranked women's national teams.
Matt Jones
Well, if it's presented by Visa, then it's big. Myron, what do you got?
Myron Metcalf
Well, I mean, captain Emily Sonnet, I trust her a lot in terms of what she's going to do for this team, what she's been able to do. You got to give Jane Campbell a lot of credit in their last match, stepped in as goalkeeper, and I think. I think they have the pieces to get this win over Australia. So I'm really looking forward to it.
Matt Jones
What is the she believes, Scott? Myron.
Myron Metcalf
It'S just a testament to women's empowerment. I think that's the idea of it.
Matt Jones
Okay. Yes, it is.
Myron Metcalf
Laughing at women's empowerment.
Matt Jones
I didn't realize it's a testament to women's empowerment. Ok, so then I'm going to take the USA because women, we are the people united, will never be defeated. Let's take USA and Jane Carpenter for the victory. What's next?
Mikey
Not much for a great men's college hoops today, but right now you got UConn and St. John's in an old Big east matchup. UConn is no. St. John's is up 15, 13 in the first half right now.
Matt Jones
Matt, am I picking this game?
Mikey
Is that what you're going to pick?
Matt Jones
Oh, I'm taking St. John's Ricky Patino has been on it. Myro. I mean, how about. How about slick Rick got St. John's on the cusp of winning the Big east title? They. I think they sold, sold out the Garden to get ready for this. I think I'm going to take St. John's to get the victory.
Myron Metcalf
Hard to three peat in the NFL. Hard to three peat in college basketball. UConn has obviously been dealing with the struggles as they try to make history. At least recent history. But. No, but Rick Patino might be coach of the year. RJ Lewis, one of the best players in America. If you haven't had a chance to see him play, give me St. John's to win at the Garden here.
Mikey
All right. Pretty good women's matchup. You mentioned earlier, Matt, you got number seven, LSU and Kim Mulkey going to number 14, Kentucky. Kentucky's Clara Strack at 22 points against Missouri on Thursday. Who you got in this one?
Matt Jones
It's Claire Strack. And LSU is. Has beaten Kentucky a lot. I think they've beaten like the last eight times. Not this time. Kentucky's good. New coach Kenny Brooks. Georgia Amore will be a top five pick in the WNBA draft. She is awesome. Kim Mulkey's gonna wear something crazy, but it's going to be a rowdy environment. That game's on ESPN, I think at 4:00. Turn it on and watch Kentucky take down LSU.
Myron Metcalf
Myron, I mean, Georgia Amore is averaged like 19 and 7. I mean, she is a, a fascinating player to watch if you get the chance. Lsu, we know how good they are top to bottom, but I'll take Kentucky to get the win here.
Matt Jones
Yes. I'm excited for Kim. Kim Mulkey's been like tearing the outfits up this year. I mean like everything she wears. Myron is just out there. Isn't.
Myron Metcalf
Is kind of wild. It is kind of wild. She definitely has a stylist who just does this, right?
Matt Jones
I think she has a stylist and just says do whatever and I will do it. She wore a basketball net the other night. What's next?
Mikey
I've had a guilty crush on Kim Milky for years.
Matt Jones
Yeah, you've.
Myron Metcalf
You don't have to say that public though.
Mikey
Everyone knows.
Myron Metcalf
We got the group chat. I don't know if everyone knows or if everyone had to know. You could put that in the group chat.
Mikey
All right, well, we were just talking about it earlier 1:00pm right here on ESPN radio. Following us, actually. Pre games at 12:30. Could also catch the game on ABC. Knicks at Celtics. Celtics are on a four game win streak and they're favored by nine and a half according to ESPN bet.
Myron Metcalf
Myron, I think you gotta pick the Celtics here. Knicks are on four against the Cavs and the Celtics just lost by 37 to the Cavs. I think it's Cavs, Celtics and then there's a big distance between the Knicks in Eastern Conference. The defense just can't hold up against teams this good. So Celtics win Here.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Celtics will win here. The Celtics are playing great. I think they continue it today. They win. I don't know if they cover the nine and a half because I think it'll be a rocking crowd. But I'll still take the Celtics. What's next?
Mikey
All right, full game of NBA on ESPN and ABC at 3:30 on ABC. You got the Mavericks and the Warriors. Stephen. Jimmy Butler favored by nine points. Matt?
Matt Jones
Yeah, I mean, I'm going to take the Warriors. You know, the Mavericks are not healthy. So until they get healthy, they're waiting on Anthony Davis to be back. You know, it's interesting. Kalin has got me believing in the Warriors. He says they can make a run. Myron, you agree? Get the Angel REEF Special at McDonald's. Now let's break it down.
My favorite barbecue sauce, American cheese, crispy.
Bacon, pickles, onions and a sesame seed bun, of course. And don't forget the fries and a drink.
Myron Metcalf
Sound good?
Matt Jones
Ba da ba ba ba.
Kalina Azabuki
I participate in restaurants for a limited time.

Myron Metcalf
I mean, I think they can make a run. I don't think they're going to win the West. I mean, the west is too good. Like you got to go through OKC and Memphis and okc. OKC isn't even fully healthy yet. And then the team, like the Nuggets are surging at the right time. But they can be interesting. And I think they'll be interesting today when they get the win.
Matt Jones
Oh, well, okay, you got them getting the win against the Mavericks. Who's Next?
Mikey
All right, 7:00 on ESPN. The Grizzlies at the Cavaliers. Cleveland coming off a drubbing of my Knicks on Friday and they're six and a half point favorites.
Myron Metcalf
Myron, they destroyed 37, man. I mean, that was just, that was a, that was a game that, like, if anyone I know, there's a lot of Celtics talk, but, but the Cavs are the top seed in the east and they have been for a long stretch. Really good team. Mavs. I'm sorry, I mean, the Grizzlies, good team as well. You know, this could be, if you're a betting man, the NBA Finals matchup. Both teams are playing at that level. I'll give the Cavs.
Matt Jones
I'm gonna take the Cavs. But you're right, these teams, these are the two teams that if you don't follow the NBA, you don't realize how good they are. And they are both very, very good. But I will take Cleveland to win. Byron, good luck tomorrow or next Saturday on your Clinton. Thanks, Virginia. I'll listen and give you a critique on the Sunday morning show if you would want.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, it'll be great. Or terrible. One of the two.
Matt Jones
Yes. Well, that's what I'll do. I'll just start it and go, that was great. Or that was terrible. But actually, I think you're gonna do amazing. Nick Celtics next here on ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf

Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron - Episode Summary
Episode Details:
The episode begins with Matt Jones and Myron Metcalf setting the stage for the day's discussions. Although shortened to a half-hour due to an upcoming NBA game between the Celtics and Knicks, the hosts express enthusiasm for the episode's guest, Kelenna Azubuike.
Matt Jones (00:31):
"We have an NBA game, Celtics, Knicks coming at 12:30 but it is Sunday morning here on ESPN radio. Matt Jones, Myron Metcalf getting you ready. We're going to do our picks. Plus I got very excited. They told me during the break Myron, Kelenna Azubuike is going to be on here as the ESPN Radio NBA analyst, former Kentucky Wildcat I idea. It made me excited. Kina one of the strongest looking high school or college dudes I ever remember in Lexington."
Myron and Matt reminisce about Kelenna Azubuike's illustrious basketball career, highlighting his time at the University of Kentucky and his transition from the G-League to the NBA. They share personal anecdotes, emphasizing Kelenna's athleticism and dedication.
Myron Metcalf (01:09):
"Yeah, man, he was a star. Played with Tubby. I remember Klinazuk and, and then you know, he was one of the best stories. He was one of the first guys to go from a G league deal to getting called up and getting an NBA contract."
Matt Jones (03:01):
"We never yet radio play by play. Right. Because that's a different, different beats."
The hosts also touch upon the upcoming Clemson vs. Virginia game, with Myron expressing excitement about his new role in radio play-by-play broadcasting.
Kelenna Azubuike provides an in-depth analysis of the Celtics and Knicks' current seasons as they approach the playoffs. He discusses the Celtics' upward trajectory, improved shooting percentages, and reliance on three-point shooting. Kelenna praises the Celtics' bench performance, highlighting players like Peyton Pritchard and Al Horford.
Kelenna Azubuike (05:15):
"Well, definitely the Celtics' trajectory is up. Their last 11 games, their shooting percentages are better than what they were earlier in the season... Peyton Pritchard is so solid when it comes to pick and rolls. Obviously his three-point shooting is great, but he can get to the mid-range, he can get all the way to the rim."
Conversely, he critiques the Knicks' defensive struggles, especially against top-tier teams. Kelenna emphasizes the importance of health for the Knicks, noting that the return of key players like OG Anunoby and Obi Toppin could significantly bolster their performance.
Kelenna Azubuike (07:52):
"For anybody to take them seriously when it comes to actually making some noise in the playoffs, going deep, making a deep run like they would like to, they need to be better against the best teams in the league and have better showings and competing better."
The conversation shifts to the critical role of player health in the Knicks' season. Kelenna underscores that the team's defensive capabilities would improve markedly if key players like Mitchell Robinson remain healthy.
Kelenna Azubuike (08:00):
"Once he gets his rhythm back, he can cause havoc. Josh Hart is warming up. Think he's going to play tonight. Those guys make a big difference for them when it comes to guarding the three ball and it comes to guarding the paint all over the floor."
He also highlights how the team's defense, when fully operational, can better support their offensive strengths.
Kelenna shifts focus to the Golden State Warriors, analyzing their potential heading into the playoffs. He discusses the impact of Jimmy Butler's trade, Draymond Green's leadership, and the team's balanced offensive capabilities. Kelenna believes that while the Warriors possess championship potential, consistent performance, especially in clutch moments, remains crucial.
Kelenna Azubuike (09:04):
"Jimmy Butler has raised the team confidence level, the team belief. And they're a more balanced team offensively. They're not as one-dimensional."
He also critiques the Warriors' free throw shooting, suggesting that improving in this area could enhance their playoff performance.
As the discussion wraps up, Kelenna shares his personal achievements and reflections on his Kentucky days, further solidifying his credibility as an NBA analyst.
