This is Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Matt
It is our number three here of Sunday morning. Matt, Myron, on a beautiful July, I guess now, afternoon in Kentucky. Myron is in Minneapolis, ready to rock. You can, you can give us a shout. 888, say ESPN. I'll tell you what, to open this up for a second, Myon, while we do this segment, I'm going to. We got something to talk about here, but I also like, would, would like to open it up to America's best 30 second take. Okay, so America's best 30 second take, you get 30 seconds as a listener in America to give your best 30 second take. And if you get it, I will not give you a prize because we don't have one to give, but I will get to award you as America's best 32nd take. So you call and you give it. Whoever wins will have like a little, I don't know what you would call it, little face off. Right. So whoever wins, you kind of try to knock them off. So if Myron gives a good take, it'll be the next person's job to knock them off the hill. You think we can do that here in this final hour?
Myron
I think we can. Let's do it.
Matt
All right. Eight, eight, eight, say espn. James, get those phone lines open. You, I know you, I know you're probably watching wrestling, but.888, say ESPN, 30 seconds. Yeah, but, but now you have to answer them. 30 seconds, your best sports take. And then we'll see who, who wins the award. While we're doing that, the reason I'm bringing this up is Paul Fine Bomb had America's worst sports take this week. He went on his show, the Aptly Named or Paul Feinbaum show, and he said that Arch Manning. Well, I'll let you hear what he said. Go ahead.
Paul Finebaum
I think there's a reasonably good chance that Arch Manning will be sitting on the front row in New York at the Heisman ceremony. That's assuming that his team does what it's supposed to do and compete for not only the sec, but for the national championship, and I really believe they will. I think Steve Sarkeesian, who's one of the most amazing play callers I've ever seen, made made a critical mistake late in the year. He was way too loyal to Quinn Ewers, who was banged up and was really ineffective. Had Arch Manning been instituted in the second half of that game, I think there's a reasonably good chance that Texas would have beaten Ohio State and won the national championship. They're very capable of doing it again this year. I believe also that Arch Manning is the best college football quarterback we have seen since Tim Tebow entered the scene in 2006.
Matt
So an absolutely absurd comment that sort of. Paul worked himself up. He first is like, arch Manning is going to be a finalist for the Heisman. Then he kind of revved himself up to the next level and said, arch Manning is going to win a national championship. And then he revved himself up and all of a sudden the next thing he's saying is, arch Manning is the best since Tim Tebow. Cam Newton would like a word. Baker Mayfield would like a word. But what did you make of that comment?
Myron
Why does it feel like. I feel like this happens more in college football than any other sport where. Where people just kind of ignore all the greatness that's come before. Like, I. I think college football is actually the hardest sport to suddenly become a top 15 top. When he got top 20 guy over the last 15 years. I mean, you're mentioning the Cam Newtons and the guys where they had these un. Unlike debatable great runs. What about your Jameis Winston RG3? Like, there are a bunch of dudes, Andrew Luck, who maybe you wouldn't consider top 10, but were remarkable. Like, Archman has to do a lot of work to be considered one of the greats. Let's see how he does this year before we make a statement like that. I mean, that. That was too far even for Paul.
Matt
It was ridiculous. I just would say to you, here's what I want from Arch Manning. Win the job at your school and then have success. And then we'll start talking about if you're even the best Texas quarterback of the last 20 years. Right? Like, so Paul skips about 10 notches there. And that's what sort of frustrates me is he can't just say, there's something about when you get on television, you can't just say, oh, I think archmanning will be good. You have to say, he's going to be the best since Tim Tebow So he gets our lowest man on the mountain. But who is going to be our king of the mountain? I just came up with that. Myron, king of the mountain here on the callers. All right, so 30 seconds.
Myron
Only 30.
Matt
Can we only thirst? Can we get a clock that can buzz them? Somebody in the studio can do that.
Myron
Yeah. Who's gonna do that?
Matt
Don't everybody?
Myron
Is anybody in the studio?
Matt
Are we. Are we?
Caller
32Nd clock here.
Matt
Just, just. But just play it.
Myron
Why don't you respond, though? I felt like I. I felt like that was your moment to come in and say something. It sounds like we didn't have a.
Matt
I'll tell you what, even if you just go, that'll be fine. You can just do it with your mouth. Okay.
Myron
Do you make that noise?
Matt
Practice. All right, there we go. That's good. A little bit of a delay. That's okay. Here we go.
Myron
Make the noise.
Matt
30 seconds on the clock. Let's go to Glenn in Atlantic City. Glenn, 30 seconds.
Caller
Lifelong, lifelong sports fan. Love myself some baseball. But for baseball to allow to put up the strike zone, the K zone, and still allow umpires to call balls and strikes any way they want is egregious. How does Major league baseball allow that? A player argues a bad call, they kick him out of the game.
Dead wrong.
Tennis has it right. Tennis has gone away from the umpires. The they use the lasers and everything. Game is smooth. Why doesn't baseball take a page?
Matt
There we go. First of all, Glenn in Atlantic City. I like the comment. It is so bizarre to me, Myron, that they have a square. We all see it. The gets it wrong and we all just move on like it didn't happen.
Myron
Well, but then, you know, I think also baseball is a sport where the fans are most resistant to technology replacing.
Matt
I'm for it. So by the way, I'm for it. They haven't.
Myron
Old school guys aren't most guys.
Matt
Well, old school guys. There's a lot of things old school guys didn't come around on, Myron. And most of them in baseball, too.
Myron
Yeah. What is this?
Matt
I haven't come around on it yet.
Myron
Glenn is the first play.
Matt
Let's go to Ron in Florida. Ron, can you knock Glenn off the mountain?
Caller
Yeah. The College Football playoff never needed to be expanded. It never should have been part of the bowl system to begin with. Bowl games are something that make college football special. You should have used the old college bowl game alignments, you know, with the SEC champs, the SEC runner up, the Big Ten champs, out to the Rose bowl playing the PAC 12 champs. You play out the bowl games, you give the little guy the Conference USA champ, the American Athletic champ. You give them a chance in their respective bowl games, and then you pick the top four teams. The playoffs should.
Matt
All right, do we agree? Is Ron ahead of Glenn or not? Ron wants to go back to the pre system where you decided who won based on votes on polls. Are you going Glenn or Ron?
Myron
I'll take Glenn, I think, over Ron right now.
Matt
Yeah, Ron. See, Ron was the exact opposite of Glenn. He wanted to go back to assist him. Ron would have been like, take that box off the screen. So we don't know if it's a strike or not. Yeah. All right, so Glenn's still the top of the mountain, Ron. And Florida's gone. What about Anthony and Raleigh? Raleigh. I'll tell you what. I'm switching it to 25 seconds. Ready, Anthony? Go.
Myron
Okay.
Caller
Hey, guys. Love the show. I'm sick and tired of Mike Tomlin and these winning seasons. I'm a die hard Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Always loved them, still love them. Either take us all the way or have a losing season so we can have a higher pick in the upcoming draft. Okay, we have Aaron Rodgers.
Matt
All right, what do we think? What do you think, Myron?
Myron
He's basically tired of me saying fire Mike Tomlin, but I mean, he was.
Matt
Saying tired of winning. I either want to win a Super bowl or fire Mike and start over. What do we think?
Myron
I mean, did he say fire Mike? I thought that he would. I don't know if he said move on.
Matt
He said move on.
Myron
Yeah, it's still. I'm still with Glenn over that one. I mean, I think that's. That was a direct take. More than this one.
Matt
Yeah. I think you got to have. If I was going to. If I was going to say how you beat Glenn there, I think you have to come in and say, if Mike Tomlin doesn't win X amount of games, it's time to move on. That's what you needed to do. That's.
Myron
You didn't quite get there.
Matt
You didn't quite get there. So I'm going to leave Glenn and his umpire scared. People are coming for Glenn. Let's go to William in West Palm. William, go.
Caller
Hey, big fan of the show. My take is LeBron James is more Wilt Chamberlain than he is Michael Jordan. As far as an adult conversation, if you take two of his rings, they're relying on other people's shots. So you got Ray Allen saving him from one Elimination game. And you got Kyrie Irving saving him from another elimination game. So he's two for I don't know how many. But if you look at that, then.
Myron
It'S like, okay, now, see, I like the way he started. Like, if you would have said he's more like Wilt Chamberlain in terms of being this dominant force, unlike we've seen in the league, that would have made a lot of sense to me in terms of guys helping him and making shots. I mean, that's a lot of play. Michael Jordan doesn't get all his rings without Steve Kerr hitting some big shots.
Matt
Here's my problem. I like the analogy, except you didn't tell me how he was like Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt Chamberlain only won one title, and he didn't win it because of the other people, too, but he won it because of him. You're saying LeBron won with other people, but that's not how will one. Wilts was the dominant player in those. So you didn't tell me how he was actually like Wilt Chamberlain. And so I'm going to have to say Glenn remains on the top of the mountain. Let's do one more before the break, and then after the break, we'll give other people chances. Jake and Indy, can you knock Glenn off?
Caller
Yeah. College player analytics are ruining football. You have somebody like Steve Angeli for Notre Dame who did everything he was asked and saved their season. Lose a starting job the next year because of somebody with a higher future shell. You're never going to have another Tom Brady ever come through and be the best player in the NFL that has that dog in him.
That's all I got.
Matt
Yeah, I don't even know what you mean. You said you mentioned a person who I've never heard of, and then you said college analytics, and you used Tom Brady who didn't even really play in college. So I have no. I don't really understand what he's talking about.
Myron
I think he just wanted to say have that dog in him. I feel like that. I feel like he had the punchline, but he didn't have.
Matt
I think it was the opposite. I think people who don't like who didn't do well in school and math just don't like the word analytics, and they just blame it on everything. Oh, my. Order from DoorDash is wrong. Analytics. Glenn is still our king of the mountain. We'll see if anybody can knock him off next here on Sunday Morning.
Myron
Matt and Myron, the podcast.

Have you ever spotted McDonald's hot crispy fries right as they're being scooped into the carton? And time just stands still. We literally just, just came up with this and it's brilliant. I'm gonna go ahead and say king of the mountain here on Sunday morning. Matt. Myron, I got a feeling it's gonna be a thing. So here's what we're gonna do. Every show that we get a king of the mountain, your take will stay on top until somebody beats you the next week. So right now, Glenn. Where was Glenn from? Do we remember? Wherever he was from, it was somewhere awesome. But Glenn is on top. Is on top of the mountain. He's the king with his take on baseball review with the umpires in the strike zone. Right now he's on top. Like Shawn Michaels at the Royal Rumble who drew number one. It's hard to win the Royal Rumble when you get number one. You have to beat a lot of people. But he did. Ric Flair won it as number three. Huh? It was not fair to Flair, but he still won. And now Glenn will try to do the same. So we're going to go through here. It is our king of the mountain. Glenn is our leader. 888 say ESPN. I guess we. You can't. Sorry, Cleophas. You can't Call again. You can't call twice.
Myron
Cleopatra's out of there.
Matt
I'm sorry. I like this, but you can't go. And Tom and Raleigh. He called earlier too, didn't he?
Myron
Tom did. I think Tom and Raleigh.
Matt
Tom and Raleigh's out. You can't call twice, guys. You can only be. You call next week for King of the Mountain. Let's go to Corey in Nashville. Here we go. Can you knock Glenn off?
Caller
I'll try. I'm a big LSU fan. Lifelong fan. Lived through Hurley, Harm Hallman, and all the. The 90s. I just want to say that if Brian Kelly loses the season opener yet again, it's time for him to get out, be gone, not even get back on the team. Playing back to Baton Rouge. He's gone.
Matt
Wow. All right, so first of all, couple things. The seven second intro of you being a lifelong fan. Unnecessary.
Myron
Yeah.
Matt
I'm going to assume you're a lifelong fan. I don't like when callers call and give their resumes at the beginning. We don't need your resume unless it's specific. Like, I know Brian Kelly. I used to work in his house. You didn't do that. I did. Like the. He should be fired after one game. But because of the intro. Because the intro. Myron, I'm keeping Glenn at the top.
Myron
Yeah, me too. Like, he. He got caught up in feeling like he had to tell us everything about himself, and we don't need that.
Matt
So on my morning show, on my morning show on ksr, people will call and go, matt, I've been watching Kentucky basketball for 57 years. And then like, like, all of a sudden, I'm gonna go, well, that makes your opinion about this team, you know, you got just. Just give you the opinion and you're good.
Myron
And so much of that's also about age. I don't know if people realize, like, yeah, if you're 68.
Matt
Yeah.
Myron
I can't be different than a guy who's 34. I mean, they can't. Like, they can't do a lot to change that.
Matt
Yes. Let's go to Jason in Oklahoma. What's your take?
Caller
I think Arch Manning hasn't accomplished anything until he has at least as many passing yards as Barry Sanders had rushing yards his final year at Oklahoma State.
Matt
Okay.
Myron
I don't know. I don't get why that. Why he's comparing passing yards to.
Matt
I think he would say it's harder to rush than it is to pass. So until he even passes the rushing yards, he wouldn't be good. Enough to do it.
Myron
But the better take would have been you comparing them to another Texas quarterback. Like, until he has as good of a season as Major Applewhite had in his third best year, something like that. That would have been the better way.
Matt
Part of what we're doing here is we're also teaching you how to make arguments. So if you want to make that argument, take a mediocre Texas quarterback and say, he doesn't even have as many as this guy, so don't compare him to Tim Tebow or whatever. We're getting there, Glenn. Who would have thought the guy that went first, number one, still is still right now on top. Todd in Nashville. Go.
Caller
Okay. Caitlin Clark is trash and should not be captain at the All Star Game. And I couldn't find a show needs to call.
Matt
Okay, well, she's not that. That's the bad. No, she's not there. I do think. I mean, she's captain because she got the most votes. She's now played Myron in less than half the games this year. Less than half. I mean, at some point, all the outrage about her being voted ninth, et cetera. I mean, she's played less than half the games.
Myron
Yeah. Yes. But I mean, also average, like 18 points a game, you know, in those games that she played. So I don't know. It's in Indianapolis. They're going any long.
Matt
That's a key point. It's because it's in Indianapolis. I think that's a key point of it.
Myron
Yeah. Just so I don't know. I think everything she does is scrutinized in a way that just never is reasonable either way.
Matt
But either way, it's actually trash. Yeah. It's both praised and criticized at way too high a level, I think sometimes still, Glenn is the king of the mountain. Glenn, is he going to get through this hot. This whole day, he. We have four minutes for someone to knock Glenn off until next week. Lawrence and Huntsville. Will it be you?
Caller
My take is that you guys spent an hour talking about the Tour de France on Independence Day weekend when the U.S. men's National Team has advanced to the final of the Content Caf tournament. Nobody cares about men in tights on fourth of July weekend. Como tally. Boo to you guys.
Matt
Okay, now, I do like the take. That was strong. Here's the thing. I would have made him number one with one exception. He didn't get the name of the tournament right. He called it the CONCACAF Final. It's called the Gold Cup. I know it's the CONCACAF Gold cup, but it's like saying he won the football championship and not saying the word Super Bowl. Myron, I think otherwise. I liked it. I liked the men in tights line. I like fourth of July weekend. But Myron, I feel like he's got to say the name of the title game they're in.
Myron
Yeah, no, he, he. He definitely has to get that part right. But it was a strong take. I mean, he. He knocked the torch.
Matt
Would you put him second, though? Would you have put him second?
Myron
Yeah, I mean, he might be. He's up there with Glenn for me, but not better than Glenn.
Matt
I'm still taking Glenn. Glenn in his baseball. Take Lawrence and Huntsville. So far, your second. Well, let's try. Let's try beer man in Kansas. Go beer man.
Caller
Hey, Myron, I know you didn't like that hot dog eating contest because all the dipped in water stuff.
Myron
Yep.
Matt
Yes. Right.
Caller
Okay. What if they put a bowl of whiskey and you had to dip your buns in that whiskey and eat 70 hot dogs soaked in the whiskey buns?
Matt
All right, so actually that's an. I don't know.
Myron
That's interesting. That's interesting.
Matt
The problem is your take can't have a question in it. Like it's.
Myron
That's the thing. He was like asking me questions in the middle of.
Matt
Like, we're not. You gotta just give your take. Although I do that would be. Be very drunk if you. I was kind of looks like the. I always wondered how the. The eaters were able to stay so thin. It looks like it caught up to my man Joey this year. Finally, after all these years. It might have one more Matt in Oklahoma City. Last chance to take down Glenn.
Caller
All right, y' all argue about what makes an NBA superstar. SGA is a superstar. And it's time for him to enter the conversation. Scoring title, mvp. Finals mvp. Highest NBA annual salary ever. And half of what makes a superstar is when national media talks about him. So it is time for SGA to enter the conversation.
Matt
All right, I'm going to say no, not because your points weren't good, but you're making an argument nobody's making. Who wouldn't say SGA is a superstar? He was the mvp. He won the tournament. Or, excuse me, he won the championship and he was the finals mvp. So it's like you're doing a straw man argument, Myron, that I can't have.
Myron
I mean, he's in okc, so I think it's one of those situations where maybe in Oklahoma City you feel that way, but the country acknowledges I think what he yes.
Matt
All right. So let's give a big round of applause to Glenn. He is king of the mountain for week one. We will bring Glenn's take back next week and we will see who can take him down. Glenn, who thought the first one to call he'll go into next week. Glenn is our king of the mountain. There's more on Sunday morning on ESPN Radio.
Myron
Matt and Myron the podcast.

It is Sunday morning here ESPN Radio. Matt Myron now, happy to be joined on the phone by Doug Glanville. He's ESPN's Major League Baseball Analyst. We are presented by Progressive Insurance. Remember, tonight is a doubleheader, Cubs and the Cardinals, followed by the Rangers at the Padres. Coverage of Sunday Night baseball begins at 5 Eastern. Doug will be on the call on the ESPN app. Doug Meyer and I were just talking about there are a couple of baseball games that I think occur 80 to 100 times a year. The Yankees play the Red Sox, the Dodgers play the Giants, and I believe the Cubs play the Cardinals 100 times a year. Am I correct about that?
Caller
Well, man, you're underscoring the rivalries, the big rivalries in baseball. And I was fortunate to be part of that in my days with the Cubs. And yeah, it's special. You know, there's some geography involved. There's bragging rights, there's red versus blue and both teams are having really good years. So it's definitely going to be on fire.
Matt
I wanted to ask you about that the National League Central has kind of been a boring division for the last 10 years. I'm a Reds fan, but this year the Cubs are good, the brewers are good, the Cardinals are good, The Reds are good. Pirates aren't good, but do have Paul Skeens. It does feel like that division has been a lot more entertaining than normal this year, isn't it?
Caller
Yeah, there's no doubt about it. And Terry Francona, you know, my old manager in Philly and, and all the championships that you had in Boston, he has had an opportunity to kind of start fresh with Cincinnati and he has a lot of family history there. And you know, he's always been one of the better managers in the game. So I think that's brought a resurgence to Cincinnati. The expectation to win and just the way he's so good with people, I think the Cubs are certainly taking a huge step this year. Craig Counsel was one of the best free agent signings that comes made. You know, they signed their manager and starting to pay some dividends. The brewers are consistently good, so it's made it, made it fun. And the Cardinals, you know, they're, they're a team that kind of is under the radar and they had to have a lot of things line up and it did for them this season. So I think it's made that central really fun and it's part of the National League just having a good year overall.
Myron
So I'm from Milwaukee and I was always jealous of Chicago people because to be a great athlete in Chicago meant something to the entire country.
Matt
Right.
Myron
And Pete Crowe, Armstrong, it feels like that city, that organization, that fan base has really embraced him. I mean, this 23 year old, how good is he? How good can he be?
Caller
Well, that's the thing about him. You don't really see a limit, just the way he has that expectation about himself. There's a fearlessness to Pete Crowe, Armstrong, and I think the numbers point out that he contributes in ways of all facets of the game. And that's what's so special about him. It's one thing, oh, you can look at the numbers. Oh, he has 23 home run, things like that. But it's really the defense, the way he uses legs, his arm, you know, he's a game changer in all those facets. And that's a real rare combination because, you know, you think back to all the big bats, you know, this guy at 60, home run, then you forget like, oh, did he defend? Did he catch anything? Did he run the bases? Pete Carmstone does all of that which is why he has a higher WAR than even Kyle Tucker as a guy that's not going to be as known for power but yet has all these home runs this season. So yeah, there's, I don't think there's much of a limit. He certainly doesn't show that he thinks there is one either so. But a lot of fun and, and he's just going to continue to improve as he learns the league and just gets more familiar with the personnel.
Matt
Doug, there's. I always like to hear what former players say about guys so I'm going to give you a little game here. I'm going to give you like five players that are intrigued me and you Give me your 10 second take on each of them as a player like not as a commentator but like you've seen the best. Tell me what you think. First of all, Shohei Ohtani.
Caller
Well, the only adjective that describes him is his own name. Oh, tonic. I mean that's all, that's all you can say?
Matt
There's nothing, he's like his own guy.
Caller
He just, there's no adjectives. It's just someone who is that dominant and that good of a pitcher as well and wills himself to whatever we've never seen before.
Matt
I love it. What about Aaron Judge?
Caller
Scarily, steadily improving. That's one of the best right handed hitting seasons of all time, without a doubt, if not the most. And this guy just keeps getting better. Calm, patient, leadership, power. It's for average, just the most complete hitter right now in the game. And the scary thing is he just seems to keep getting better.
Matt
All right, three young guys tell me Paul Skeens.
Caller
Beyond his years. The calm, the precision. He has a lightning bolt for an arm but he chooses not to use it. He wields it carefully, cautiously, intelligently. You know I'm just going to blow you away. It's kind of rare for a young guy to come up and understand the pacing of the game and therefore a bona fide ace and a perennial all star.
Matt
The home run leader, Cal Raleigh.
Caller
This guy, switch hitter, all, all around, steals basis, manages one of the best rotations in the game, lefty, righty and hits in a really impossible place to hit in Seattle and just continues to work on his game to perfect it, never satisfied. And his name's just going to be in the MVP conversation. Even with Aaron Judge in the league.
Matt
It's amazing. Then finally I can't do it without saying my guy, Ellie De La Cruz.
Caller
And I mean well usually say five tools. You have to throw like a six tool, maybe a seventh with Elliot De La Cruz. Teleportation, speed, you know, I mean, this guy, this guy is special. And, and I love how he wants to embrace his power and his value to all the game. He just seems to celebrate all of baseball, you know, mastering the language, working on all these other things that are beyond the game. You know, I like, I love how he tries to be complete and not just like, I'm a ball player. And by the way, on the field, electric, great arm, super fast power, everything you would check off on the highest ratings of skills in the game.
Matt
He has good stuff, Doug. I like that.
Myron
Yeah, Doug. You know, whenever I think about, like if we're playing in the greatest era in any sport, you know, I think about the most important position. Is that important, that position improving. I look at Tarek Skubal and I go, man, just a guy leading this class of, of young pitchers across baseball. But he really stands out. I think you're on the call when he struck out 13 last Sunday, like, how special is a guy like that?
Caller
Well, you know, you think about the game and you know, you have that ace baseball searching a little bit about what to do with pitching because it's become so specialized with the bullpen. They carry 13 pitchers that you have a guy in the bullpen for every situation and then they use them. So you don't have that kind of old school, hey, this guy's going to throw eight innings, this guy's going to throw nine. You have specialists that come in and execute for a particular circumstance or situation. School bowl kind of cuts through all that. You know, he's sort of the knife in the butter. He's like, you know what, I can go nine. And he's starting to get that pacing. But it's amazing how much he's just a power pitcher that has equally powerful command. His ability to attack you with a change up, right, because he's so aggressive and fearless. So he's, he's just a lot of fun and he's got that throwback mentality. He doesn't want the ball ever to be taken out of his hand. And, and I, you know, and he continues to just improve. He's always talking about, I want to, I wish I had Kershaw slide or a Chris Sale sweeper. He's always thinking and impressed by the other greats of the game, even though he has all the greatness inside.
Matt
I, you know, we people talk a lot about the Yankees and Mets in terms of struggles, but they both would be in the playoffs if it started today. To me, the most disappointing team is probably the Braves, who are playing right now. Do you agree with that? And if so, why do you think it's happened?
Caller
Yeah, the Braves are not playing well and I'd say they're up there. Baltimore Orioles, you know, there's some teams.
Matt
Playing each other right now, so it's perfect.
Caller
Perfect. Right. Well, you know, the thing is they lost the seven in a row. They started off and they played against teams that were hot and good at the time, Padres. And the thing about the Braves, a lot of times when you have these really good teams, they find a way to avoid those seven game six, game nine games because they've turned that seven game losing streak into two and five where they have an ace that just says, okay, I'm going to handle this myself and get the W. They haven't had that. And they've gotten into these big stretches and profar with the PED suspension and a lot of wheels just fell off. Strider hurt. Acuna, you know, came back to great form, but without. So they've had a lot of problems just being consistent and even with Alex Anthropoulos, who is the head of their baseball operations, he makes all the moves very aggressive. I'm not sure what he's going to be able to do with the trade deadline because they've just gotten so far out and, you know, they're going to have to rely on, you know, big lossing losing streaks by the Phillies and the Braves. But the wild card will keep the fire burning. But they are definitely, you know, high on that list, as you mentioned, teams that are really falling short of expectations.
Myron
Doug, I'm from, from Milwaukee and I don't ever want to encourage our guests to say anything that they don't actually believe. Will you tell everybody why the brewers are going to win the World Series?
Matt
He does this all the time and no one can. He does this all the time.
Myron
I don't do it all the time. I just, people don't, you know, I don't feel like the brewers ever get enough credit. So, you know, again, whatever you feel, I don't want to make you feel any pressure.
Caller
Yeah, no, I agree with that. They don't get enough credit because even with Craig Counsel leaving for Chicago, they bring in Murphy and they're still really good team then.
Myron
Incredible, right? I mean, that would have devastated a lot of franchises, losing a guy like Craig Counsel.
Caller
Right. Well, they have a, they have a good approach. You know, they, they're very they understand the players that, like, play well there. They sort of, you know, get what their marketplace is about. They maximize their resources, and they're just perpetually good. I think the tough thing for them to, like, take that next step is, like, how to use the resources to add to it. You know, they kind of, you know, work on, you know, efficiency and minimal, and they just don't, you know, have the resources or put in the resources to be like, all right, now we're going to sign all these guys. They lose a lot of their talented free agents. They, you know, they struggle with that. So that's. That's their challenge. But are they going to be good? Yeah, they're good. Nobody wants to face their pitching. They got some exciting young players. Cheerio. And they play hard. I mean, they're just a lot of fun. I've had their playoff games last few years. They're just really a great franchise.
Matt
I'll get you out of here. I appreciate it.
Myron
I didn't hear. I didn't hear World Series.
Matt
Stop talking. I'll get you out of there with this. Doug. The, the. Because the wild card, like, in the National League, pretty much every team outside of, like, Colorado and. And Washington is still, in theory, in the wild card in the American League, there's only, like two or three teams out. It looks to me like at the trade deadline, is it going to be hard to find sellers? Because, like, all these teams that might be sellers can kind of make an argument they're still in it.
Caller
Yeah, well, that. That's what happened when they added the third wild card team in each league. You created this really deeper sort of buyer and sense of buyer remorse, like you're trying to figure out who the sellers are, and they're just not that many. You have five, you have six, and they're all vying for the same talent pool. So it is very hard to get that sort of player that you need, that. That marquee player, big splash when everybody's going for that player. And that was just the, you know, the way it's going to play out when you add more playoff teams and more teams are in it. So that makes a lot of sense. Now, what I've seen, and certainly a lot of the front office people that we've spoken with, they now shoot for not so much like, I'm going to buy this talent, but I'm going to sort of create a win, win environment. So they'll trade with the team that's in contention, and they'll say, I give. I need a third baseman, but you need a right fielder and we'll swap. So that's what they do now. And then you have to just make the calculation that your move is a better one, right. That that will allow you to surpass the team you just traded with and that that's the risk reward because you could be giving them their final piece. But you see a lot more of that, right? It's a lateral kind of purchasing as opposed to like, you know, I win, you, you, you say I want something now for your future and vice versa. Now it's much more about like we have to both win these trades and because there's just not enough sellers.
Matt
And a couple of the big targets, the Louis Robert and then the guy with the pitcher, with the Marlins, Alkind, they both struggle this year, so they're not as, not as big a target. Doug Glanville's on the call tonight for cubs and cardinals, 5pm Eastern on ESPN radio. Great stuff, Doug. Thank you very much.
Caller
Appreciate it. Thank you.
Matt
All right, there you go. Doug Glanville. Myron. I mean it was kind of exciting for me. I had a Doug Glanville, I think what Mariners or Phillies baseball card in like 1988 maybe? So old school. Yeah, that was kind of fleer Donnerous, all of it. It'll be time. After all of this talking today, we still gotta let you know who's gonna win these games. Let's take your pick.

So book your Test drive for Polestar 3 today@Polestar.com it is Sunday morning ESPN Radio Fun Show Today created a new segment that King of the Mountain, which I think is gonna be good. Had fun making fun of Myron. I heard that during one of these breaks you got during the show, did you get ding dong ditched?
Myron
I did, yeah.
Matt
Somebody.
Myron
Somebody rained rain. The doorbell ran away. I don't know.
Matt
So, like, you're now the guy on the block. Since you reported to the police the fireworks, you're now the guy on the block that all the kids are gonna pick on. I love it. You're gonna get like a flaming bag of, you know, for you to step on. Coming up soon.
Myron
Yeah, I don't know the situation.
Matt
I don't like to cuss.
Myron
Well, we'll discuss in the next meeting if it comes to that.
Matt
But yeah, I like it that people are gonna pull old school pranks on you. They're gonna have a whoopee cushion.
Myron
Don't encourage.
Caller
You're gonna get TP'd.
Matt
Okay. You're gonna get TP. That's right.
Myron
Oh, why would you encourage that, though? Why would you all, like, want me to.
Matt
I'm not encouraging you. I'm just saying that's what's gonna happen. If you're known as the open man in the neighborhood that keeps the football when you kick it over the fence.
Myron
There were kids laughing somewhere. I don't know where they were, but they were definitely some kids laughing somewhere.
Matt
I was laughing in Kentucky. And guys, your Venmo will be there in about a week. Who's up next? Or what's the. What's time to pay? Sorry. It's time to play Take your pick.
Myron
Take your pick.
Matt
You take your pick.
Myron
It's time to take your pick on Sunday morning.
Matt
All right, what's the first game?
Producer
All right, let's go to Wimbledon. Number 14, Andre Rublev against number two, Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz is a gigantic favorite. Minus 1000 on ESPN. Bet you can watch this on ABC and ESPN Plus. Who you guys got here?
Matt
Well, I'm going to have to take alcaraz since he's minus 1000, but he's had some struggles in the start. Nearly lost in the first round. Started to come through. But I like Carlos to get the win at Wimble. People say I say it wrong. Say Wimbledon. It's Wimbledon.
Myron
Yeah, it's Wimbledon. I thought it was Wimbledon.
Matt
We just say it differently in the mountains. I mean, I say Tennessee and TV and Wimbledon.
Myron
Okay, yeah, whatever you want to. Whatever makes sense. I'll pick. I'll pick out Alcarez. I mean, his. The struggles in the first round. It just shows me that I feel like in tennis, it's the smallest gap between the best player in tennis and the worst. And maybe in any sport.
Matt
Nah, golf is where it's the most. Like golf, a terrible guy can win the US Open. But. But tennis. Yeah. That's not true at all. In tennis. The guy that Alcaraz played was pretty good. Yeah. I mean, well, if it feels it, then it must be true. What's next?
Myron
To me, it is. That's all that matters.
Matt
Not true at all. The.
Producer
The CONCACAF Gold cup final is tonight. You, USA against Mexico. Mexico, a slight favorite. Who you guys got here?
Matt
USA had been a disaster coming in. I mean, just all kinds of bad stories. Some of our top players didn't play. Then we got beat in one of the early games, didn't look good. But now we're in the finals like we always are. It's USA and Mexico. We tend to do pretty well against. Against Mexico. So I'm going to say, after all the turmoil, the USA gets the victory and the USA takes it on Independence Day weekend.
Myron
Like, is there a better name than Concaca? Like, can't you. Can't we come up with something that maybe is a little shorter and all.
Matt
That, but it's like it sounds for. It stands.
Caller
It's just an acronym.
Matt
It is, but what's it an acronym for? Like countries of.
Myron
That's just your acronym. Shouldn't have more than.
Producer
I would look it up. I just want to know what you.
Matt
Think it is, though.
Producer
That's what.
Matt
It's a lot of letters, so it's hard for me to know. I. I'm gonna say too many. There aren't too many of them. I don't. Honestly don't know what it stands for.
Myron
The. The Collective Organization of Countries.
Matt
Nobody knows. I'll do my date. Bargazi. Nobody knows.
Myron
Oh, I did forget the end.
Matt
Yeah. What's next?
Producer
All right, we have a double header. Baseball double editor here on ESPN Radio today. Cardinals, Cubs is the first game. Cover starts at 5pm Eastern right here on ESPN radio. Cubs favorite in this one. Minus 210 on ESPN. Ben, who you got here?
Matt
I'll take the Cubs at home. Cubs been really good this year. Rubber match of the series. I'll take Chicago and Wrigley. What do you got?
Myron
I hate picking the Cubs in anything, but I'll pick them to win this particular series.
Matt
It is the Confederation of North Central America.
Myron
Okay. I didn't know where you were going with. I'm sorry. You got It. No, I heard confederation. I was like, whoa, we might be having a different kind of show. I know. I'm just saying. I know. But there are trigger words in my community that I didn't know where we were headed. I had to ask for last week.
Producer
Week, man.
Caller
Yeah.
Matt
You can't say confederation, North, Central America and the Caribbean. Central. No, it's North American Central.
Myron
I know.
Matt
I heard.
Myron
I heard confederation in North. I didn't know what was going on.
Matt
Go ahead. Confederation, Federation of North Central America and Caribbean Association Football.
Myron
They put the Caribbean in there. Like, what?
Matt
Yeah, Caribbean's part of the conga.
Myron
That's just. We gotta short that. That's just too much. That's when you go to the meeting and you don't want to disappoint anybody.
Matt
They should just call you. Like, we will include you because it is the Americas. But then the Caribbean's like, what about us?
Myron
Well, there's no South America, the Americas and company.
Matt
It's true. It's not with South America. Yeah, there's no. I think we. I guess we just go with concacaf. That is what it is.
Myron
You can't listen to everybody's ideas at the meeting. Like, you can't just let everybody. Oh, we need everybody to participate. No, you don't. I care about everybody participating. Just save us something that we understand.
Producer
You have to confuse because then you'd be missing a C in the concacaf.
Matt
That is true. Thank you all very much for listening. Congrats to Glenn, the king of the mountain, everybody. Have a great weekend. We will be back next week. This has been Sunday morning on ESPN Radio.

Release Date: July 6, 2025
Hosts: Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf
Description: Join Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf every Sunday morning as they delve into the latest happenings in the sports world, offering insightful analysis and engaging discussions.
The episode kicks off with Matt and Myron introducing a new interactive segment titled "King of the Mountain." This segment invites listeners to share their "America's Best 30 Second Take," where fans provide their succinct opinions on various sports topics. The goal is to crown the week's top take, with the winner maintaining their position atop the mountain until they are bested by another listener's input.
Matt:
"We’re launching 'King of the Mountain' this week. Every show we’ll crown the best listener take, and they stay on top until someone can knock them off next week."
(02:19)
Before diving into listener takes, Matt and Myron discuss a controversial comment made by Paul Finebaum regarding Arch Manning's prospects in college football. Finebaum had lauded Manning as a potential Heisman finalist, a possible national championship winner, and even compared him to Tim Tebow.
Matt:
"Paul Finebaum worked himself up, jumping from Arch Manning being a Heisman finalist to the best quarterback since Tim Tebow. It was ridiculous."
(03:07)
Myron:
"College football often overlooks past greats. Arch Manning needs to prove himself before being labeled one of the best."
(03:34)
The hosts emphasized the importance of letting athletes prove their worth on the field before making lofty comparisons.
The segment featured multiple listener calls, each presenting their unique sports opinions. Below are the highlights and analyses of each submission:
Glenn:
"Baseball allowing umpires to call balls and strikes their way is egregious. Tennis uses technology for smoother games; why doesn’t baseball take a page?"
(05:55 - 06:27)
Analysis:
Matt and Myron appreciated Glenn's call but noted his minor factual error regarding the use of technology in tennis.
Matt:
"Glenn’s take on umpires is the best this week. It’s bizarre how such a clear issue persists in baseball."
(06:41)
Ron:
"The College Football playoff should not have been expanded. Bowl games make football special. Use old alignments and pick top four teams for the playoffs."
(07:19 - 07:52)
Analysis:
Ron’s perspective was polar opposite to Glenn’s, suggesting a return to traditional methods. However, Matt and Myron favored Glenn’s take over Ron’s.
Anthony:
"I'm tired of Mike Tomlin’s winning seasons. Either take us all the way or have a losing season for a better draft pick."
(08:34 - 09:06)
Analysis:
The hosts interpreted Anthony’s frustration as a desire for significant changes within the Steelers’ management. This take, while direct, didn’t surpass Glenn’s.
William:
"LeBron is more like Wilt Chamberlain than Michael Jordan. His championships rely on others’ shots, unlike Wilt."
(09:41 -10:02)
Analysis:
Matt critiqued William’s analogy, arguing that Wilt was a dominant force, unlike LeBron who relies on teammates. Glenn’s take remained superior.
Jake:
"You spent an hour talking about the Tour de France when the U.S. team is in the CONCACAF final. Men in tights aren’t relevant during the Fourth of July."
(19:05 -19:28)
Analysis:
Despite minor inaccuracies in the tournament name, Matt and Myron found Jake’s passion commendable but did not elevate his take above Glenn’s.
Corey:
"If Brian Kelly loses the season opener again, he should be gone. Playing back in Baton Rouge won’t fix anything."
(15:12 -15:33)
Analysis:
Due to an overly lengthy introduction, Matt and Myron dismissed Corey’s take without substantial consideration.
Jason:
"Arch Manning hasn't accomplished anything until his passing yards match Barry Sanders’ rushing yards at Oklahoma State."
(16:43 -16:55)
Analysis:
The hosts found Jason’s comparison nonsensical, reducing his take’s credibility.
Caller:
"Caitlin Clark is trash and shouldn’t captain the All-Star Game. She’s only played half the games yet is praised excessively."
(17:59 -18:34)
Analysis:
Despite valid points about Clark’s participation, Matt and Myron maintained Glenn’s take as superior.
Caller:
"SGA should be in the NBA superstar conversation. He’s an MVP with a high salary, and national media recognition."
(21:25 -21:46)
Analysis:
Matt critiqued the caller for presenting a "straw man" argument, but Myron found it marginally better than previous takes.
Beer Man:
"What if they dipped buns in whiskey and ate 70 hot dogs soaked in whiskey buns?"
(20:29 -21:00)
Analysis:
Humorous but lacked a solid opinion, rendering it ineffective for the segment.
Caller:
"Elliot De La Cruz has seven tools—teleportation, speed, and more. He embraces all facets of baseball, making him a complete player."
(29:41 -30:25)
Analysis:
Although enthusiastic, the overstated attributes didn’t outweigh Glenn’s clear take.
Conclusion of Segment:
After evaluating all submissions, Glenn from Atlantic City was crowned "King of the Mountain" for his incisive critique of baseball umpiring practices.
Myron:
"Glenn remains our king of the mountain with his solid baseball take."
(12:03)

(03:07)
