Myron Metcalf
This is Matt and Myron the podcast.
Matt Myron
It is Sunday morning here on ESPN Radio with Matt Myron, presented by Progressive Insurance. Mother's Day. Glad to have everybody here with us. Hope it's a beautiful day where you are, Meyer Metcalf. We are about to be joined by Drew Carter. He's a Celtics play by play guy. Would you like you did our last play by play person we had on 30 minutes ago? Do you believe Drew Carter is a presence when you see him, as opposed to me?
Myron Metcalf
I. I haven't met Drew Carter, but I would imagine, you know, those play by play guys do have a presence, man. Have you?
Matt Myron
All right, well, let's bring in Drew. I think you probably have a presence, Drew. This is our first time having you on myin. I think he kind of thinks that when play byplay guys walk in, they have a kind of thing that makes you want to follow them. All right. You should take that as a big compliment. Are you there?
Drew Carter
And I have done a show together.
Matt Myron
Okay. There you go. You've done a show with Myron.
Drew Carter
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Myron and I have done a show together, so obviously I don't have a presence.
Matt Myron
Oh, my goodness. Myron Metcalf, Drew Carter has done a show with you and you forgot him. How rude.
Myron Metcalf
We've done. We've worked together. That's my bad then, man. That's. That's my mistake.
Drew Carter
Hey, it's all right. I know how ESPN radio works. Like, we've. We've all worked with 100, 100 different people. It kind of blends together. But if you're talking about presence, I mean, clearly that knocks me down a few pegs.
Matt Myron
Wow.
Drew Carter
So don't you remember?
Matt Myron
It's nice to meet you. We. Did you do a show with Myron, Drew?
Myron Metcalf
It's coming back to me now. Drew, I know. I know who you are. I know who you are.
Drew Carter
This is a couple of years ago. We were both at home. It was just a. It was a zoom rigmarole. So I understand. I don't blame you.
Myron Metcalf
Yep.
Matt Myron
Wow. Byron, how rude of you to not know.
Myron Metcalf
I remember.
Matt Myron
I. I would have remembered you, Drew. It's just they don't let me work with anyone but Byron. So that makes it. That makes it a problem, Drew. Right. So I got a question for you. I mean, you. You know the Celtics better than anybody. Let's just say I hadn't watched any of the three games in this series. And I just saw what has been the case that in games one and two, the Celtics shot 25% from three, and then in game three, they shot 50%. An idiot who hadn't watched the games would say, well, there. That's why there explains the differences. Do you agree that that's true or is there more nuance?
Drew Carter
Yes, I'm going to. I'm going to answer that non yes or no question by saying yes, because I do think that explains a lot of it. But there is more nuance to it. If you watch games one and two, the Celtics have a big lead late third quarter. Both times in game one, they got away from their identity. They reverted to some of the habits that bit them in the highest leverage moments before with this iteration of the the Jalen Brown. Jason Tatum led Celtics when they got in trouble in the playoffs. And look, it was deep in the playoffs, right? They'd been in the finals in 22, gets an experienced warriors team. They've been in the Eastern conference finals in 23, lost to the Heat. They had made deep playoff runs. They're in the Eastern conference finals every season. What ended up being their downfall in those conference finals a lot of the time was a stagnant offense that was very predictable and very. My turn. Your turn. Isolation, isolation. Heavy with both of the Jays taking a lot of bad shots. They reverted to those habits in games one and two. And I think it was frustrating for a lot of Celtics fans because it felt like last season they left that in the rearview mirror. They got over that hump. They went 16 and three in the playoffs and cruise to a title. So it kind of felt like that era was over. You know, Brown and Tatum are now in their late 20s. The team is loaded around them. We didn't expect to see that again. But then, you know, it comes down to crunch time in 1 and 2 in Boston and they start doing that same thing again. It's like they almost. They forget that the shot clock is 24 seconds. They treat it like the shot clock is 13 seconds and they have to throw everything out the window and play hero ball once the shot clock hits like 11 or 12. So that was frustrating to watch. But a big part of it was, of course, a three point shooting. I mean, you shoot 25 for 100 across two games and you're as reliant on it as the Celtics are. It's going to be hard to win. I mean, I think the fact that they built 20 point leads in both of those games despite not shooting it very well, can actually be encouraging. Of course, you know, nothing is going to be encouraging when you blow both of those leads. But I think if you're looking at it from the future of the series in this, you know, this was the case in Game 3. The Celtics clearly have a better team and this is a pretty good matchup for them. They just have to not forget their good habits down the stretch, which is what they did in game three. And then. And they dominated.
Myron Metcalf
Drew. Jason Tatum has to be one of the first players to win a championship. And then the narrative is still that he's not clutch, but that's followed him, you know, and the way he played in the first couple of games in his series didn't help. You know, how fair is that narrative and what does he have to do in this series and beyond to shake that?
Drew Carter
It's not fair. I think if you watch the team, you know, night and night out, you know that it's not. You can thin slice the numbers however you want. You can look at, you know, game tying or go ahead shots in the last 10 seconds of a game and say, oh, Jason Tatum shooting this bad percentage? Well, those are hard shots. Pretty much everyone in the league shoots a bad percentage. Even the clutch player of the year, Jalen Brunson is not shooting 100% on that type of shot. So I think people will, can. Can use numbers and build an argument however they want. To me, Jayson Tatum is actually a pretty clutch player. There are times where it's frustrating the, the shots he settles for. And yes, I'm going to use the S word, settle, which is, you know, a big topic of conversation around the Celtics because people see the number of threes they shoot and they get frustrated. But in reality, a lot of those are the best shot they can generate on an offensive possession. This team has shooting at all five positions and a lot of the time the best shot they can take is not even a Jason Tatum 3, but it's a Drew Holiday 3 or a Derrick White 3 or an Al Horford 3 or Christoph Forzingis 3. They have role players who wouldn't be role players on other teams. When you have that situation, a lot of the time the best shot you generate is where Jayson Tatum runs a pick and roll up top, or he just isolates against his defender, gets two feet in the paint, kicks it out for a good three. That's where the Celtics are most lethal, most dynamic, and that's what they did in the first three quarters of both games in Boston, and that's what they got away from in the fourth quarter of both of those games. But they maintained that in Game three. And they didn't have a clutch situation where, you know, Jason Tatum ends up having to make a hero play at the end of a game like in Game two. Obviously what they did on the last possession of both of the first two games was uninspiring and would definitely give you ammo if you want to argue that Jason Tatum is not a clutch player. But I would just urge you, if that's how you feel, to go back and watch the final possession of Game two and tell me what you want Jason Tatum to do. Because that possession I do not think was his fault. There are a bunch of different things you can point to. Number one, I would like to see a timeout get called, maybe not right away to advance the ball because, you know, I know what Joe Missoula was trying to do. They had just scored in that same situation with a pick and roll and Mitchell Robinson gets dusted and Tatum goes right to the basketball. But once that initial action doesn't work, then you can call a timeout and set something up. And the reason that would have been helpful is because the spacing was atrocious on that play and it wasn't really Jayson Tatum's fault. He had nowhere to go aside from the corner where he got double teamed and then the ball was stolen.
Matt Myron
So you're saying he's not that they.
Drew Carter
Take to take that small sample and say that he's not a clutch player, I think is unfair. Look at what they did last year and and I do think he's pretty clutch.
Matt Myron
Talking to Drew Carter, Celtics play by play Announcer I'll make I'll end with this. I have been anti Joe Missoula since 2010 when his West Virginia Mountaineers upset John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in the Elite Eight. I'm still angry at him. He came off the bench and had an amazing game. So I am predisposed to not like him. But I do also think he seems a little strange. Like after his comment that they yesterday they embraced the darkness, which sounded like something the undertaker or Aaron Rodgers would say. Explain to me, like, what is this dude Joe Missoula really, like, besides breaking my heart with against Kentucky and saying, embrace the darkness like a WWE heel.
Drew Carter
Well, Matt, I know you remember this vividly, but just for the folks at home, yet that game that's referencing West Virginia was a big underdog. That Kentucky team was super talented. Joe Madul is an undersized lefty guard. He's like six foot one. He comes out there, he's at the top of that junkie one three one zone.
Matt Myron
It was terrible. That should be an illegal zone against the rules of basketball.
Drew Carter
Oh, wow, wow, wow. Follow the NBA. If you want anti zone rules, follow the NBA, not college basketball. So Joe Missoula is at the top of the zone. He has the best game of his career, and then he gets interviewed by Jay Billis after the game. And that was when he wasn't as polished in the media and you could really hear his New England accent come through. He's a Rhode island guy. He is one of the most unorthodox people I've ever come across. The son of a coach, his dad, AKA that's what.
Matt Myron
Unorthodox. Is that a nice way of saying weird?
Drew Carter
Look, he's. We call him sicko or psycho Joe. He's just a different cat, man. He's the most competitive dude I've ever come across. When the Celtics lost the Eastern conference finals in 2023, what Joe Missoula did was go to Costa Rica, the jungle. He went to the jungle of Costa Rica and trained with a former. A former chess champion whose story was the basis of the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer. He trained with him and then did competitive fighting with that guy in the jungle for eight days. It wasn't like, hey, 1, 2, 3, Cancun, we'll see you guys for training camp. It was, I need to put my body and mind on the brink of collapse because.
Matt Myron
Are you. Are you saying all this to make me think he's not crazy? Like, so far, everything you've said goes with exactly what my view of him was.
Drew Carter
I. He. He is, but he'll. He'll embrace that he is himself. Joe Missoula views everything as a competition. There was a media availability last season where a beat writer, John Corrales, asked him about how they've struggled against two different rim protectors. And what Joe Missoula said is, what about Rudy Gobert? What about Brook Lopez? We played well against both those guys. That's. You had two. Now I have two. Now let's keep going. Now we're tied. It's like, hey, Joe, this is an interview. This is not a debate team. This is not a UFC cage match. But he views everything as a competition and I think the team sometimes takes on his mindset. He we run an offense called the killer. Well, offense guys. Joe Missoula's favorite animal is the orca because it's the apex.
Matt Myron
Drew, everything you're saying, you're just making him seem weirder to me. And I have to tell you, whenever someone says about a person he is who he is, that means I would not like that person. When you say he is who he is, that's not a great sign.
Drew Carter
You don't like him. You don't like him because he broke your heart in 2010. That's okay.
James
Yeah.
Matt Myron
You're also talking about orcas and playing chess in Costa Rica. I feel like, I feel like he and I are not going to walk to Skyline together. Drew, you, you, however, are wonderful. Hopefully next time Myron will remember you. Thank you very much for your time.
Drew Carter
Hey, watch Maryland Air force Men's Lacrosse ESPN you230 today. Check it out.
Matt Myron
Oh, okay. I like it. Nice to it. Thank you. All right. We are going to talk more about the game and Myron is going dismiss the memories of people even more. That's next here on Sunday Morning with Matt.

Sunday morning with Matt Myron on ESPN Radio. We are getting ready for the NBA games. Barcelona beats Real Madrid in El Classico. Myron forgets the names of people he's co hosted with. It is a great Sunday morning here on Mother's Day. Yeah, but you still need to remember who they are. I don't think, like, I have probably.
Myron Metcalf
Worked with more people, man, than most people at ESPN Radio, I bet. You know, so.
Matt Myron
So you're almost like the utility infielder of. Of espn, right? You're the kind of Santiago Espinal of ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf
I'm the local opening comedy act. When you bring in the big comedian, you know, like, whoever you bring in, Nate Berghazzi, Kevin Art, like, I'm the dude that opens.
Matt Myron
You're the guy who's like, everybody welcome my guy, Hannibal Burris. And they're like, yeah, well, thank you very much.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I'm that. Yeah.
Matt Myron
Okay. Well, you can tune into baseball action tonight. The Guardians in the Phillies. I'm not sure who's calling the game, but my won't remember who they are. Coverage of Sunday Night baseball begins at 6 Eastern on ESPN radio and the ESPN app guardians and the Phillies tonight. Byron, a couple segments ago during the. You just sort of looked at me and said, what's the deal with the Savannah Bananas? Why did you say that? You're not a fan?
Myron Metcalf
I don't know what's going on. I mean, I see that, like, they're filling up. They're filling up arenas and stuff. And they had 70,000 people.
Matt Myron
70,000 people came and watched them in Nashville last night. 70,000 people?
Myron Metcalf
Why? Like, what am I. Is it the dances? Is it the. Are they a real team? Is this like the Harlem Globetrotters? Are there like a real.
James
You have to enter, like a lottery to get tickets for this?
Matt Myron
I don't under. I'm kind of with Myron. I don't understand why people care so much.
James
I mean, Globetrotters would be a. The Globetrotters would be pretty good comparison.
Matt Myron
The Globetrotters are not going to sell 70,000 tickets to a baseball game or to a basket. Like, why. Why do people. I saw we on ESPN are showing, like, eight games over the course of the summer.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, ESPN has a deal with them now.
Matt Myron
Yeah, but why? What. What is it like? Because I feel like every time I see it, it's just. The umpire is dancing with the. With the pitcher. That's all I ever see. Why is that?
Myron Metcalf
Thing is, like, my thing is, like, you stop the game to do these dances.
Matt Myron
Like, so are they. Do they play. James, do they play at all real baseball, or is it all just dances we have.
James
Rachel came into the studio whenever.
Matt Myron
Oh, hi, Rachel. So explain to me what. What is the appeal?
Unknown
So they're playing banana ball. So it is baseball. That's why they are not the Harlem Globetrotters, because they can't actually lose games because they're playing an actual game. But they're making it fun. And I think it's what, like, young people want to see because it's.
Matt Myron
It's.
Unknown
Let's be honest, it's social media.
Matt Myron
Okay, wait a minute. So they play. Let me. Let me rewind. They play real games?
Unknown
Yes, yes, they.
Matt Myron
So it's like a real game where they could lose?
Unknown
Yes, yes, they can lose. Like, you can't really. I don't want to say you can fake a basketball game, but you can't really fake a baseball game.
Myron Metcalf
Rachel. The first six games on their schedule are against something called the party Animals.
Unknown
Yes. So they. They have their own league. They have the fire, the party animals, the bananas. And then there's one more. I'm. I'm blanking on.
Matt Myron
Wait a minute. Did you say the firefighters, the party animals, and who's the other one?
Myron Metcalf
The Texas tailgater.
Matt Myron
Okay, and these. You're saying, Rachel, these are real teams. There's a.
Unknown
Yes, they are actually baseball players. A lot of them, like, are people that obviously didn't make it to the majors, but they didn't want to give up on baseball. So they actually go through, like, I just learned about this. This whole audition process where they have to prove that they can play baseball. They have to go and, like, do the dance moves. It's apparently a very rigorous process.
Matt Myron
Do the party animals, like, do the party. Because, like, the Washington Generals would lose every game. The party animals, you're saying, can win if needed.
Unknown
They can win. Yes. If they play better baseball, they win.
James
Do you want to hear the banana ball rules?
Matt Myron
Yeah. Give me a rule.
James
Each inning is worth one point. The team that scores the most runs in an inning wins that inning and receives a point. And in the final?
Matt Myron
Why is that necessary?
James
Well, listen, in the final inning, every run counts toward the overall game score. There's a two hour time limit. The game has a two hour time limit. And no new inning can start after the 1 hour and 50 minute mark. Unless there's a tie. No stepping out of the batter's box. No bunting. You can steal first. There are no walks.
Matt Myron
How do you steal first?
James
Batters can attempt to steal first base on any pitch. There are no walks. There are no mound visits. Foul balls caught by fans in the stands are no loss.
Myron Metcalf
Wait, what? What does that mean? No wall.
James
If a batter reaches four balls, they advance as many bases as they can before the defense touches the ball. I don't know what that means.
Myron Metcalf
So this is like the xfl.
Matt Myron
You said if people in the stands catch it, they're out.
James
Five balls caught by fans in the stands are outs.
Matt Myron
Ah, kind of cool.
James
I do like that there's a showdown. Tiebreaker. If the game is tied after two hours, it goes into a showdown. Tiebreaker.
Matt Myron
What does that mean?
James
To show down, pitcher and batter faces off with limited fielders. Banana ball. There's a banana ball challenge where any spectator can challenge a call on the field. There's a goal.
Matt Myron
Wait a minute, hang on. Any spectator in the stadium can challenge a call. Like all 70,000 people.
James
These are all key rules in banana ball.
Matt Myron
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
And then there's kind of cool. Now that you lay out all these.
James
Rules, there's a golden battle rule.
Myron Metcalf
It also sounds chaotic.
James
Yeah, a team can send any hitter to hit in any spot in the lineup at any point in the game. That's the golden batter rule.
Myron Metcalf
So this is the Harlem Globetrotters? It is the Globe Charter.
James
That's what I'm saying.
Matt Myron
But you're saying. Rachel, you're saying the games are not fixed.
Unknown
No, they. They are not fixed.
Myron Metcalf
The Globe Charters games weren't fixed.
Unknown
Then how. They. They've only lost, like, what, five?
Matt Myron
Never lost. They were.
Myron Metcalf
Of course they were fixed. Here, listen. Let me explain some Harlem Globe Charters history to everybody, okay? There's the spin the ball on your fist, that thing. Right. But they played actual games against the General.
Matt Myron
The Jets? You tell me. Just coincidentally, the Generals just won once since 1973.
Myron Metcalf
That's just for the Globe Charters at one point.
Matt Myron
I understand, but he doesn't play for him now. Like, like, like, like. Come on.
Myron Metcalf
They played real games. Yes, yes. They do the exhibition spinning on the finger, but they're playing.
James
The Generals would stand there and watch those guys flip.
Matt Myron
Are you trying to tell me that Ric Flair actually was able to win the net, the world title? 17. Like, come on now. Are you. You think the Globetrotters played real games?
Myron Metcalf
They did play real. There was the exhibition stuff that you're thinking of, but there was also a real Globe Charter.
Matt Myron
Okay, but the stuff that we think of, that stuff was fake.
Myron Metcalf
Spinning it on your finger ain't fake. I did fake that.
Matt Myron
Okay, first of all, we're getting off topic here. Back to the Bananas for a second.
Unknown
Just so we're aware, the Party Animals, I looked up their record are night have 19 wins, 13 losses. The bananas have 13 wins and 19 losses.
Matt Myron
So the Bananas don't even have a winning record.
Unknown
No, but the Party Animals do.
Matt Myron
So why don't the Party animals get more credit? Why do I only know about the Savannah Bananas? It feels like the Party Animals are where the talent is.
Myron Metcalf
They do tiktoks.
James
That's why Savannah Bananas rhymes.
Matt Myron
The Savannah Bananas. What? Have better pr.
James
Yeah, rhymes.
Matt Myron
Last thing, Rachel, real quick. I just got 20 seconds. Why do they dance? Like, what. What leads to the dances?
Unknown
It just makes it fun. There's all kinds of different things, different challenges, different. Like they just want to try new things. All kinds of stuff.
Drew Carter
Stuff.
Matt Myron
All right, well, you're gonna be able to watch that this summer, and it's gonna be exciting. Party Animals versus the Texas trailers versus the Savannah Bananas. It's all there. We'll be right back.

Myron Metcalf
No, it just. I just.
Matt Myron
She could have read Word up magazine. You don't know that there's no way.
Myron Metcalf
For me to pay you back back show you that you are appreciate. It was like, dude, wait, did K record? K recorded that?
Matt Myron
Look, he said, man, you, you do.
Myron Metcalf
Not I'm throw lyric at the end like that.
Matt Myron
You do not appreciate sweetness. Game four of the Knicks and the Celtics is audio ESPN radio. Monday night, seven o' clock.
Myron Metcalf
I don't want any problems, man. I like it.
Matt Myron
That was my Metcalf. I quoted a lyric for my mother as well. It was Myron Metcalf that did not do that. It is now. You know, we've been talking a lot of basketball, but talking a little Savannah Bananas. I didn't realize how many fans of Savannah Bananas had like a lot of people, right? You know, they're coming to the Reds Stadium here in, in July and I wasn't going to get tickets. And now people are saying to me, I need to go. They said that they have a group of older women called the Mama Bananas or the Mama Bananas. Who knew? So apparently eight games on ESPN this summer from the Savannah Bananas, an older group of women.
Myron Metcalf
What does that mean?
Matt Myron
I think they just have like cheerleaders, but they're like grandmas. Oh, so it's like grandma, Grandma Bananas. I think is what it is. All right, so, you know, but we haven't talked about the NFL and we are legally required to talk about the NFL on ESPN Radio regardless of the time of year. You have to do it.
Myron Metcalf
So let's do anytime we talk about the NFL. Why do you say it like that? Well, because I think we are NFL pregame show.
Matt Myron
I'm a big NFL fan. I'm just saying we can't go a whole show just talking about nonsense like you want. We got to talk about the NFL. So let's do a little whip around. James, what's up first?
James
Yeah. So yesterday, Derek Carr announced his retirement Saints quarterback and kind of came as a surprise to a lot of people. Here's Ross Jackson from the Locked on Saints podcast talking about Locked on Saints. Yeah, the Locked on Saints podcast. He was on primetime talking about Kellen Moore being able to pick his quarterback.
Drew Carter
Kellen Moore, for the first time in his coaching career, gets to hand pick his guy. You know, he inherited Dak Prescott as an offensive coordinator, inherited Justin Herbert, inherited Jalen Hurts and did great things with those guys and then also did great things with Cooper Rush, won games with Kenny Pickett, won games with, you know, some of these other quarterbacks that he's gotten the opportunity to work with. And so I think for him this is a chance for him to really kind of set sail as the standard bearer for the New Orleans Saints and kind of choose the new era. Make a selection here. Whether it be, you know, rookie Tyler Schuck, second year guy Spencer Rattler or third year quarterback Jake Hayner, though it really feels like the conversation is between, you know, those first two guys. He gets a real opportunity here to just kind of build this thing in his image.
Matt Myron
Yeah, you know, Tyler Shuck, Spencer Rattler, there'll be plenty of time to talk about those guys. But Derek Carr. How are you going to remember Derek Carr's career, Myron? I mean he was not, certainly not a star but also. Well, he was a star at times. I think I, I, I, I think he, sometimes he, he maybe is destined to be a little underrated. What do you think?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean we won't consider him sort of in that first year quarterbacks, but in that second tier, you know, I think he's in the mix. You got to give him credit for longevity. I think more teams have had Derek Carrs than Peyton Manning. I mean it's hard to have, have a player play at that position as long as he did and do well, which I think he did. He wasn't.
Matt Myron
So what's your favorite Derek Carr memory? When one day we're all sitting around with our grandkids and they say grandpa Myron, tell me about Derek Carr. What are you going to say?
Myron Metcalf
I'll tell him that I think it was a 2015 season. He was about to win MVP. He was right there with MVP and then he got hurt, season ending injury. But I mean I think like that was that. No, you look back at that because like go back to that season and you see how good he was and to know that he played a decade beyond that is, is, is pretty fast.
Matt Myron
You think your grandkids going to be a little disappointed if your favorite memory is and then he got hurt. Don't you think that's going to be like grandpa, you can't do better than that. Then he got hurt.
Myron Metcalf
Listen man, I think he's, he's had some good moments. It's hard to be great in the league With Tom Brady, Mahomes and all that, man, you know.
Matt Myron
Okay.
James
Is his best moment ever when he called the timeout in overtime against the Chargers. Whatever. They were going to tie. Remember? They were going to tie, both make the playoffs.
Matt Myron
Should I remember this?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
James
They were going to tie, both make the play. They were going to both make the playoffs because they were going to tie and overtime.
Matt Myron
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, now I do remember.
James
Yeah. And then the Chargers coach. What was the Chargers coach's name? He just got fired.
Matt Myron
Don Staley. No, I mean, no, not Don Staley, but.
James
But it was a Staley, though, I think.
Matt Myron
Who was the guy? He was a Staley, right? I'm not Brandon Staley. Yeah.
James
Brandon Staley tried to win the game instead of just tying and both everyone going to the playoffs. So then the Raiders. The Raiders got into field goal rang.
Matt Myron
I knew it was a. And the first person that came to my mind was Dog St. Got fired. All right. Yeah. Well, all right. All right, let's go to the next one.
James
So rookie minicamp started up and Shanore Sanders, obviously with the Browns now him and Dylan Gabriel got some snaps. Dylan Gabriel took the first snaps with the first team on day one of minicamp. And then Shador Sanders spoke yesterday. He was asked about, you know, getting sliding down the draft.
Matt Myron
Tom Brady talked about sending you a.
Drew Carter
Message after the draft.
Matt Myron
So what did you take away from that? His advice to you? That was it. My story's gonna be similar. You know, I was a late round draft pick, but we're here now, so none of that stuff matters. That just mattered on the day. And I'm just excited to be here and ready to work.
James
Shanor Sanders and Tom Brady, basically the same guy, right?
Matt Myron
Yeah. I wish I had the confidence of a young NFL player, like to get up in front of people and go, tom Brady and I are going to have the same story. Like, that's an amazing amount of confidence. And I'm not even lying. Like, sometimes I get up and I go, can I walk to Skyline or not? Like, that's what I want to know. Do I have the ability to walk all the way out Richmond Road and get to Skyline and come back and Shadore Sanders can go, yeah, I'm going to have the same career as Tom Brady. So, Myron, I actually respect it. Do your thing, Shador.
Myron Metcalf
That's a man. You know, he was raised by one of the most confident human beings in NFL history. Listen, there's a path for Shador to. To embarrass everybody. To make everybody look silly by playing really well and having this elite career. But also, Tom Brady ain't gotta, like, do that. No, you can give regular advice like, hey, man, do well. Show up for practice. You don't have to tell them that you and I are gonna have the same Pat. You know what likes doing that? Successful people love doing that stuff to people. They love having seminars and mentoring people.
Matt Myron
I tell people, you're not going, just.
Myron Metcalf
Like me, you know, I tell people.
Matt Myron
Go, you're not gonna make it. Like, it's. It's.
Myron Metcalf
We need more of that, though.
Matt Myron
No, I mean, sometimes you have to tell a kid he can't sing, right? Like, people will go, I want to be. No, they can't say, some people need to know, like, your path. Because people will say to me sometimes, matt, how do I get to have the career you did? And I just say, you're not going to. You need to have the career you can have. I don't think that's bad advice. I think bad advice is sitting there telling everybody that they're going to be a star because everybody's not going to be.
Myron Metcalf
No, no, no.
Matt Myron
That's just me.
Myron Metcalf
We need to shut down bad singers early, though. Like before the age of 17. You should know whether or not you got potential. Don't be out here 42 years old saying, can I make it? No, you can't make it, Shirley. You can't sing.
Matt Myron
You are not so Morgan Wallen. No, you cannot rap. Like, it's just. Just move on. All right, what's next?
Myron Metcalf
Nothing's worse than, like a 37 year old rapper who's like, man, I've been in the studio. Go home. Okay, like, what do you talk about you in the studio at 37. Why.
Matt Myron
Don'T you have a family?
Myron Metcalf
The worst thing in the world.
Matt Myron
All right, go ahead, James. What's our last one?
James
Yeah, the. The Pittsburgh Steelers robbed us of a wide receiver room that included DK Metcalf and George Pickens fighting defensive backs downfield after Mason Rudolph interceptions. By training Pickens to the Cowboys earlier this week. Here was George Pickens after he was traded on a conference call.
Myron Metcalf
I feel like everybody in the world, you know, is working on growing on their.
Matt Myron
On their better end of their self.
Myron Metcalf
And I feel like growth for me is taking a great direction in me.
Matt Myron
Coming to the Cowboys. That sounds very professional until you learn that. The reason he said that was because Mike Tomlin said you need to grow up. I respect Mike Tomlin a lot, and Mike Tomlin, who's Been around him for five years. Says he needs to grow up. The Martin, I'm gonna assume he needs to grow up. And because of that, I. I don't know if the Cowboys is the best place for somebody to go grow up. I guess we'll find out.
Myron Metcalf
High level talent, I mean, we all know that, but my goodness, man, I don't know that the maturity is there. We'll see if Dak can help him with that. But yeah, it says a lot if Mike Tomlin, who's dealt with Antonio Brown is like, yeah, time for you to go move on.
Matt Myron
Yeah. I mean, Mike Tomlin was like, okay, I can deal with Antonio Brown, George. I think that's plenty. So that does make me a little bit worried.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Myron
I'm not, however, worried about you telling 37 year old rappers they need to go home. Like, that's.
Myron Metcalf
Can't stand it. You're in the studio, like it. Why? I don't understand it. You have no songs that anybody want. What are you going to rap about at this age? The struggle? Nobody cares. You know, you gonna rap about being cool? Nobody cares. 37.
Matt Myron
I think there's a role for Myron to be somebody you hire to tell people that their career dreams are not gonna work.
Myron Metcalf
I love it. I would call you into the room, you would sit down and tell me all your big dreams and I'd be like, you know what, that's wonderful. But it's never gonna happen.
James
Bad news, Myra.
Myron Metcalf
I would just tell you to your face.
Matt Myron
So you would be fine looking at like 20 year olds and going, no, it's not happening for you. That's what you'd want to do.
Myron Metcalf
You know, there are people who will tell me like, hey, Junior is going to be a great basketball player. And I'm like, no, he's five, nine. Junior about to get dunked on if you put him out there with some real dudes. I'm not going to lie to you.
Matt Myron
I went to Transylvania in college and there were two kids. I'm not going to say their name, they could be listed. But they came and one of them, and both of them said, we came to Transylvania because we want to play Major League Baseball and because we're in a. I, we don't have to wait three years to go to the league. And I just want to be like, dude, you don't start for Transylvania. What do you mean you're going to play major League baseball? You don't even make the everyday lineup here. And we're 12 and 15 right now. So you know, but guess what? Neither of those guys made the major league. So I think maybe somebody could have given them advice.
Myron Metcalf
Crush people's dreams early so they don't have to deal with it later. You know, you should do that to people, you know.
Matt Myron
Well, I'm going to crush Myron's dream of ever beating me in picking games. Next, it's Sunday morning on ESPN Radio. Take your pick with Matt, Myron.
Myron Metcalf
Matt and Myron. The podcast.
Matt Myron
It is this song I love listening.
Myron Metcalf
Took control.
Matt Myron
Jesus and mama always loved him. The premise of this song is he robbed banks. The. The singer robbed banks. He was always in trouble. And then. But then the chorus is, but hey, Jesus and mama still loved me. And so that was the. That's the premise of the song is that even when everyone else is gone, you still have on Mother's Day. Jesus and Mama. Turn it up. Just a second. You'll see what I'm saying.
Myron Metcalf
What? Okay.
Matt Myron
He was a wild horse that couldn't be rode.
Myron Metcalf
Shoot his attorneys.
Matt Myron
Here we go. Now turn up. Here's the chorus. Hey there, travelers. Kaley Cuoco here. Sorry to interrupt your music. Great artist, BT Dubs, but wouldn't you rather be there to hear it live? Drew Carter
Dip approved by Ketchup, Tangy barbecue, Honey.
Matt Myron
Mustard, honey mustard, Sprite, McFlurry, Big Mac.
Drew Carter
Sauce, double dipped in buffalo and ranch.
Matt Myron
More ranch and creamy chili McCrispy strip dip now at McCrip McDonald's. You like that, Myon? Isn't that good? Even when the devil took control. Jesus and Mama.
Myron Metcalf
Every time you play songs like this, I realize how different our childhoods were. You know what I mean? You always like. You always like. Do you like this? Like, who is it by? Oh, it's by Cowboy and the Horses.
Matt Myron
I hesitate to tell you that. I hesitate to tell you the name of the singer of the group for this.
Myron Metcalf
I don't. I think I know the name of the singer. I don't think you should say the name of the singer.
James
I think we can move on from that part.
Matt Myron
Okay. I just. All right. I just.
Myron Metcalf
I don't think you need to. I don't need.
Matt Myron
Yeah, probably. Probably don't need to do that.
James
All right.
Matt Myron
It is now. Happy Mother's Day, by the way, after playing Papa Love Mama and Mama Love Men.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah.
Matt Myron
What's up with Mama's in the graveyard?
Myron Metcalf
Country Soul.
Matt Myron
Yeah, we all. This is a good Mother's Day treat. It is now time to make our picks for the week. This is take your pick.
Myron Metcalf
Take your pick.
Matt Myron
You take your pick.
Myron Metcalf
It's time to take your pick on Sunday morning.
Matt Myron
Mothers everywhere are going to be happy with this. Salute. What's our first game?
James
First game, the Oklahoma City Thunder are six and a half point favorites on the road against the Denver Nuggets in game four. You can hear that right here on ESPN Radio. Coverage starts at 3:00pm Eastern. Who you got?
Matt Myron
That's an amazing spread considering the Nuggets are up to one and the game is in Denver and Oklahoma City is still a 6 1/2 point favorite. I'm still taking Oklahoma City, though. I think they win. I think the Nuggets, you know, played late, played late two nights ago. You know, they're, they're tired. Thunder had the week off before. I'm taking the Thunder at home or on the road. What do you got, Mark?
Myron Metcalf
So are we picking straight up or are we picking against the spread?
Matt Myron
Either one.
James
I. I don't know.
Myron Metcalf
I.
James
What do we usually do?
Matt Myron
Well, we usually pick just to win in football, but in the other sports we go against the spread. So go against the spread. What do you got?
Myron Metcalf
Six and a half is a big number. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, especially since we know Jokic hasn't been great the last couple of games. It's hard for me to imagine him playing, you know, less than what we've seen. He'll be better. And if that's the case, give me Denver all day, every day.
Matt Myron
If it's close, though, I think Denver wins. That's the thing, is that Oklahoma City has shown some struggles down the stretch, but I don't think it's gonna be close. I think Oklahoma city wins by 15.
James
What's next, another game four in the NBA? The Cavaliers are five and a half point favorites on the road against the Pacers.
Matt Myron
You guys got massive game here. I think if the Pacers are going to win the series, all these teams, the Knicks, the Pacers and the Nuggets, if they're going to win the series, they kind of need to win these games at home. I think the only one that'll do it are the Pacers. I think I get them to cover and I actually think they win. Straight up, Myron. And go ahead and go up three, one.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, when Cleveland was at full strength and close to full strength, it was clearly a different game against the Pacers. And I think you'll see the same situation here, man. If you tell me Mobley and DeAndre Hunter, Darius Garland are all available, then Indiana's gonna have a tough time with the real number one seed in the Eastern Conference. So give me Cleveland to win and cover.
Matt Myron
What's next?
James
Let's go to the NHL. The Winnipeg jets and the Dallas Stars in Game 3. Dallas is minus 135 on the puck line.
Matt Myron
First of all, you ever been to Winnipeg, Myron, in your life? Never had any reasons to go to Winnipeg?
Myron Metcalf
Nope.
Matt Myron
I. I was in Winnipeg. I saw the. The Dixie Chicks in Winnipeg and they were very good. Winnipeg doesn't have a lot going on, so they're really into this team and I think they get the win against Miko Ranton and the Stars tonight. Give me the jets on the road against the puck line getting the victory. What about you?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, Connor Hellebuck, 21 saves in the last game. I mean, it gets Dallas.
Matt Myron
Did you have to look that middle? Did you know who Connor Hellebuck nailed the pronunciation.
James
That's. That's a hard one to do.
Myron Metcalf
I didn't look up kind of Hillbuck. No, I knew, I knew. I followed playoffs. How did you know?
Matt Myron
No, seriously, how did you know?
Myron Metcalf
I'm big into the NHL playoffs. I like. Okay, NHL playoffs are by my favorite playoffs.
Matt Myron
Fair enough. So that's your. That's your favorite Winnipeg player? Give me your second favorite Winnipeg player.
Myron Metcalf
I don't have a second favorite, so.
Matt Myron
But like, I thought you were really in the playoffs. I thought you'd have so many Winnipeg players that like, it would be hard.
Myron Metcalf
Like Adam Lowry. I mean, Vidardi, I think, is one of those dudes.
Matt Myron
Yeah, yeah.
James
Lowry's the captain. That's a good one.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Velardi, Right? Right, Velardi. So, no, I think Connor getting goals gonna be tough for them to deal with. And big day for him again.
James
Give me Winnipeg jets are plus 115 on the puck line.
Matt Myron
All right, so we're both taking Winnipeg.
Myron Metcalf
Why are you surprised that I know stuff though, about him? Like, why are you always, like, shocked that I know things?
Matt Myron
Certain you're looking at a roster.
Myron Metcalf
I'm not. So 23 year old, just tossed into this thing. Man, I've been doing this for a long time.
James
Game 4 in the NHL, the Maple Leafs and the Panthers. The Panthers are minus 200 on the puck line. They're at home. Who you guys got?
Matt Myron
Yeah, well, the Leafs won. Didn't the Leafs win? Game 3?
James
I think 1 Game 1 and 2 Panthers won game overtime.
Matt Myron
I've taken the Leafs on the road. This is Toronto is going to make it the Eastern Conference final where they then lose to the Hurricanes. But they're going to get this. It is time to end the reign of teams from Florida being good at hockey. There's no reason for all the lightning and Panthers wins in recent years. Give me the Toronto Maple Leafs. They care more than the people in Miami do.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I think I read something about Alexander Barkoff. Just like the way that the team is going into this game and the mindset stop. You know, I think you didn't read.
Matt Myron
Anything about Alexander Barkov. What did you read about Alexander Barkov?
Myron Metcalf
I'll start over since I was rudely interrupted. Alexander Barkov and just the attitude and the mindset of this team. They know how important this game is. It's a massive game three, you know, game situation for the Panthers and I think that'll affect this situation. Give me the Panthers to win.
Matt Myron
When were you reading what did you read about Alexander Barkov?
Myron Metcalf
About the mindset of the team going into this game and how important it was. Like they understand the stakes of this game.
Matt Myron
What outlet did you read that on?
Myron Metcalf
I was just, you know, doing my normal like reading about, you know, the NHL playoffs and he said they have to come out understanding that this is like a must win situation. So I think you'll see that sense of urgency with the team tonight with Alexander Barkov.
Matt Myron

Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron Episode: Hour 3: Mazzulla Antics and the Boston Celtics Release Date: May 11, 2025
In this episode, hosts Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf dive deep into the current state of the Boston Celtics, featuring insights from their special guest, Drew Carter, the Celtics' play-by-play announcer.
The conversation kicks off with an analysis of the Celtics' recent playoff performance, particularly their fluctuating three-point shooting percentages across the first three games of the series.
Matt Jones highlights the inconsistency:
“In games one and two, the Celtics shot 25% from three, and then in game three, they shot 50%. Do you agree that that's true or is there more nuance?” (03:12)
Drew Carter responds thoughtfully:
“Yes, because I do think that explains a lot of it. But there is more nuance to it... The Celtics have a big lead late third quarter. They reverted to habits that have bitten them in high-leverage moments before.” (03:36)
Carter emphasizes that while poor three-point shooting contributed significantly to the Celtics' early struggles, underlying issues such as predictable offensive patterns and shot selection under pressure also played crucial roles.
The hosts shift focus to Jason Tatum's reputation regarding clutch performances. Matt questions the fairness of the narrative that Tatum isn’t clutch, especially in light of his play in the initial games.
Matt Jones asks:
“How fair is that narrative and what does he have to do in this series and beyond to shake that?” (05:23)
Drew Carter defends Tatum:
“To me, Jayson Tatum is actually a pretty clutch player. There are times where it's frustrating the shots he settles for... But I think if you look at last year, he is pretty clutch.” (05:42)
Carter argues that while some late-game decisions may not have favored Tatum, the overall evidence supports his ability to perform under pressure.
A notable segment involves Drew Carter discussing Joe Missoula, a figure associated with the Celtics, whom Matt describes with mixed feelings based on past experiences.
Matt Jones remarks:
“I have been anti Joe Missoula since 2010 when his West Virginia Mountaineers upset John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in the Elite Eight. I'm still angry at him.” (08:12)
Drew Carter provides a colorful portrayal:
“He's one of the most unorthodox people I've ever come across. The son of a coach... He went to Costa Rica and trained with a former chess champion, doing competitive fighting in the jungle for eight days.” (09:08)
The discussion paints Missoula as highly competitive yet eccentric, blending athleticism with unconventional training methods. This unconventional approach sometimes rubs listeners the wrong way, evident in Matt's frustration.
Transitioning from basketball to baseball, the hosts explore the phenomenon of the Savannah Bananas, a team that's been garnering significant attention.
Myron Metcalf expresses confusion:
“Why did you say that? You're not a fan?” (16:25)
Rachel (Guest) clarifies:
“They play real games... They have their own league with teams like the Party Animals and the Texas Tailgater. They make baseball fun with dance moves and interactive elements, appealing especially to younger audiences.” (17:18)
The hosts discuss the unique rules of "Banana Ball," emphasizing its blend of traditional baseball with entertainment-focused elements, making it similar to the Harlem Globetrotters but for baseball.
James adds:
“Each inning is worth one point... Batters can attempt to steal first base on any pitch. There's a showdown tiebreaker and a golden bat rule where any hitter can bat in any order.” (19:00)
Despite skepticism about the appeal, the hosts acknowledge the team's growing popularity, especially on social media platforms.
Shifting to American football, Matt and Myron cover significant NFL news, including Derek Carr's unexpected retirement and rookie minicamp highlights.
Matt Jones reflects on Carr's career:
“How are you going to remember Derek Carr's career? He was not, certainly not a star but also had moments where he was a star.” (27:34)
Myron Metcalf praises Carr's longevity:
“You’ve got to give him credit for longevity. More teams have had Derek Carrs than Peyton Manning.” (27:53)
The discussion also touches on rookie Shonore Sanders' confidence, comparing his high aspirations to Tom Brady's legendary career.
Shonore Sanders states:
“Tom Brady and I are going to have the same story. I'm going to have the same career as Tom Brady.” (30:00)
Myron Medcalf critiques this confidence:
“Successful people love doing that stuff to people. They love having seminars and mentoring people.” (31:24)
In the interactive segment, the hosts engage in predicting outcomes for upcoming games across the NBA and NHL.
First NBA Game: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Denver Nuggets
Second NBA Game: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Indiana Pacers
First NHL Game: Winnipeg Jets vs. Dallas Stars
Second NHL Game: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers
As the show wraps up, Matt and Myron exchange light-hearted banter about their differing tastes in music and reminisce about their childhoods. They reiterate their game predictions and encourage listeners to tune into upcoming sports events.
Notable Quotes:
Matt Jones (03:12):
“Do you agree that that's true or is there more nuance?”

“To me, Jayson Tatum is actually a pretty clutch player.”
Matt Jones (08:12):

Drew Carter (17:18):

James (19:00):
