This is Matt and Myron, the podcast.
Matt Jones
I am really excited for this next segment. Been looking forward to it all morning because it is time for king of the mountain here on Sunday morning. ESPN Radio, ESPN App, SiriusXM Channel 80, along with Myron Metcalf. I'm Gabe Neitzel, Triple 8, say ESPN 888-7293776. Call in, give us your hottest sports take and you get 30 seconds to give us that hottest take. So we have a current king of the mountain. And here's the take. Here's what you have to do in order to beat this. This is. This is the standard right now. You gotta be better than this if you want to walk away as king of the mountain. Here's Russ in Indiana.
Myron Metcalf
Call now with your hottest taste.
Gabe Neitzel
Hello.
Myron Metcalf
And then Matt and Myron will announce the hottest of them all.
Matt Jones
Is his destiny gonna be ful. Destiny awakens. This is the king of the mountain champion.
Myron Metcalf
The king of the mountain.
Matt Jones
Ladies and gentlemen, your winner and new king of the mountain champion.
Myron Metcalf
Let's go to Russ in Indiana.
Matt Jones
It's boring state, so maybe he's had.
Gabe Neitzel
Time to come up with something good.
Matt Jones
Go, Russ. The Nebraska fan base and the Indiana.
Gabe Neitzel
Fan base in basketball.
Matt Jones
Nebraska football are the most overrated teams in college. In college sports, they are the McRibs that think that they're prime ribs. They haven't been relevant since the Clinton administration and they still think they're great and they're not. All right, that's the current king of the mountain. Myron, how long has Russ been the defending champ here with that? Take that. Indiana basketball fans and Nebraska football fans are overrated.
Myron Metcalf
Well, I've been going for a couple weeks at least. A couple weeks?
Matt Jones
Two weeks running.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. Yeah. And great product. We didn't have the production before I left. I mean, that's a whole new. Oh, you know. Good. Yeah. I couldn't remember if you heard that or not. Yeah, that's good. I like. I like that. Yeah, man. So this is cool. I want to see if anybody can knock off our guy Russ this week.
Matt Jones
So that's the current king of the Mountain. You heard the standard. You know what you have to beat with your hottest sports takes. You get 30 seconds. Triple H, say ESPN 8, 8 8-729-33-776. Let's go ahead and start with Jessica in Milwaukee. Jessica, you're up first for King of Mountain.
Gabe Neitzel
So King of the Mountain is definitely the Milwaukee brewers fan base. Regardless of whether we have a winning season or a losing season.
Matt Jones
We packed the stadium to the brims.
Gabe Neitzel
I'm actually standing in line right now to get in on the Mrs. T shirt.
Matt Jones
Day parking is insane.
Myron Metcalf
We've got so many people here. Brewers fans are out of control, and.
Matt Jones
We should be number one.
Gabe Neitzel
King of the Mountain.
Myron Metcalf
I mean.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I love.
Myron Metcalf
I don't think it's.
Matt Jones
I don't think it's. I don't think it's a hot take. I think it's just. I think it's the right take.
Myron Metcalf
Well, and they're. They're in Milwaukee, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah, they're in Milwaukee. But it's crazy, but we had some flash flooding here in Milwaukee, Myron. People are dealing with flooding. Like some parking lots are not accessible and people. Like, some roads to the stadium are not accessible. People are still showing up and lining up to get a free Jacob Mizarowski T shirt before they go for the sweep of the Mets this afternoon.
Myron Metcalf
No. And that's incredible. I mean, the loyalty, the passion for that fan base is. Is real. So it's a 30 second deal. In the past, we had, like, a ticking clock, but people were saying it was too loud. So I think that's the only thing we got to figure out here is how we get to 30 seconds and how people know their time is running out. But so far, let's kind of look at the clock and see. But she's. Yeah, I got a buzzer ready to go. I'm watching the clock. Okay.
Matt Jones
All right.
Myron Metcalf
All right, we got next.
Matt Jones
All right, so you got 30 seconds. Give us your hottest sports take to try to become King of the Mountain. We go to Max in St. Louis. Max, you're up next Sunday morning on ESPN radio.
Gabe Neitzel
Hey, guys, I'm a big Bears fan, but I am convinced that Caleb Williams peaked the year he won the Heisman. And his career highlight is going to be that he did friggin Wendy's commercials.
Matt Jones
He was well under 30 seconds.
Myron Metcalf
Way under 30 seconds. Not terrible. I mean, there's a world where we could look back and say, that was Pete. Caleb Williams. I think it's too early to make that call for a guy going into a second year, Gabe. But if he struggles this year, there are gonna be a whole lot of people who feel like this guy gave us his best stuff at USC during that Heisman Trophy season.
Matt Jones
Yeah. Yeah. Right now we've had two calls. I don't think anybody's. And nobody's taken down Russ so far. Right. Like, Russ still king of the mountain.
Myron Metcalf
It feels like Russ is safe right now so far.
Matt Jones
Okay, let's see if anybody can unseat Russ's hot take. And we go out to Sports Guru in Virginia. You've got 30 seconds to give us your hottest take.
Gabe Neitzel
The Miami Rollins will be a Walker team this year.
Matt Jones
Okay, that's it. That's. That's. I mean, okay. No reasoning. No, no, nothing behind it. The. The Marlins, by the way, six games back of a.
Gabe Neitzel
Of.
Matt Jones
Of a playoff spot. Six games back.
Myron Metcalf
All right, but I mean, give us something. I mean, give us something more than that. I mean, I can say. You can say anything you want to say, right? Like, give us a reason. You know, that was just a sentence. I don't really know.
Matt Jones
Yeah, yeah. We need. I mean, again, Russ gave his take and then, you know, gave a couple of reasons. Was entertaining behind those reasons. That's what you're looking for for King of the Mountain. Triple H, say espn. We go out to Willingham in Virginia. You're up next for King of the Mountain.
Gabe Neitzel
Hello?
Matt Jones
Yep, go ahead. You got your 30 seconds.
Gabe Neitzel
Okay. Okay. My. My table by Stephen A. Smith. He will write what they say about shoulder. They were spinning. Put him out there knowing he had a. So shoulder. Okay. They had two quarterback to come up with hamstring. Okay. Why they just didn't use Joe Flasho. So that's my thing.
Matt Jones
All right. Got in just under the buzzer.
Myron Metcalf
So. So he's saying, Stephen A. Smith. I mean, listen, I'll tell you what. If people are. If Shador is good, I think everybody will have to say, I told you. You know, he told you so. I mean, we'll all have to face that. Who doubted him? But I don't think we're there yet.
Matt Jones
No. After one preseason game, I don't think we can. Now, he looked good in the preseason game. Certainly better than looking bad in the preseason game. But we got. We got a ways to go. As you pointed out earlier, the NFL is littered with quarterbacks who had great preseasons and then really couldn't really do much once the regular season hit triple H. Say, ESPN. Aaron in Kansas, you're up next. You've got 30 seconds to give us your hottest take. Well, first I can say that living.
Gabe Neitzel
In Kansas City, Russ is going to be tough to beat because the Nebraska.
Matt Jones
Fans, he does have them 100% nailed.
Gabe Neitzel
But as someone who grew up in both Albuquerque and Los Angeles, as a.
Matt Jones
Dodger fan, I would say that the.
Gabe Neitzel
Padres probably could at least be added.
Matt Jones
In as a trio with those two.
Gabe Neitzel
I know they have been in the World Series since, ironically, to go along with Russ since the Clinton administration, and they get to hang their hat on.
Matt Jones
Winning the trade deadline every year.
Gabe Neitzel
And that's. That's about it. So I'd say they're. They're pretty much up there with as.
Matt Jones
Overrated as any team out there.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, so let me just go over the rules again.
Matt Jones
Please do.
Myron Metcalf
The goal is to have the hottest take, right? Like, so I don't know what's happening this week, but we need a little more passion. You know, that's the whole thing. Give us a hot take, right? Don't just say something like, tell us why you believe what you believe. Back it up. And then you have a chance to dethrone Russ in Indiana. But there has to be a little bit more passion and just a little bit more, you know, convincing, if you will. I think if you're gonna try to become the king or Queen Jessica and Milwaukee right up the mountain. So that's just something I want to insert in there. Like the goal is to win. And I'm hearing a little bit more of conversation you hear at the water cooler at work when we need hot takes.
Matt Jones
All right, let's see if Matt in Oklahoma City has a hot take ready for us. Matt, you're up next for King of the Mountain. We need a committee of baseball nerds.
Gabe Neitzel
And statisticians to create a grading curve and algorithm that can help us better assess all time MLB records.
Matt Jones
We all know it's not fair.
Gabe Neitzel
Doesn't add up to hear Griffey Jr. And Babe Ruth in the same record list or Ichiro and Mantle.
Matt Jones
We.
Gabe Neitzel
We can find some smart dudes who can create something. Sports technology, medical technology, season length, rule changes. These things are accessible and quantifiable. We can make a grading curve.
Matt Jones
I mean, I think we already kind of have that. Don't we? Don't we have that in baseball? Baseball references for.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I think he's saying, like, somehow to be able to compare players from past generations to players to current generation, I don't, I don't think you would solve anything. Right? Like, there's still going to be the element of the competition level was different. The equipment was different. I think the athletes are different. So I don't know that you would. I don't know that you would have people who suddenly were like, oh, you know, mantle's better than Ichiro, or each so much that's generational. So I get the concept, but that doesn't feel like a very hot take to me.
Matt Jones
No, No. I feel like we're starting to get a little closer. See if Mike in New York can get us even closer to dethroning Russ in Indiana as the current king of the mountain. Mike, you've got 30 seconds to give us your hottest take.
Gabe Neitzel
All right, we're in horse racing, guys. Zenyatta went 19 0. Rachel Alexander won a Grade 1 race against the boys. But this is about Personal Ensign. Back when Sunday Silence ran against winning callers in. In the Kentucky Derby, Winning Colors beat the boys at their own game in the Derby. The classic that year for the Breeders cup was winning colors versus Personal Ensign. Personal engine.
Myron Metcalf
Is. Was. Was he calling us from a 1936 telephone? Like what? Like.
Matt Jones
That was the same from 1936.
Myron Metcalf
With all the horses? Yeah, that was the same phone that they used. I can't believe what I just saw. Like, that. All those, like, old school calls. Like, I don't know what he's talking about either. I have no clue what he was talking about.
Matt Jones
We're just gonna move on. We're gonna move on to LS in Virginia. I'm. I'm hoping LS like king of the hill. Yeah, right. We need. We need a hot take to get us to the top of the mountain. Something, hopefully LS comes through for us in Virginia. You're up next Sunday morning on ESPN Radar. You got 30 seconds. LS.
Gabe Neitzel
Tom Brady is not the goat. I think Joe Montana was the goat, hands down. You got to put an asterisk beside Tom Brady's name. Because of the spy gate and the deflate gate. We don't know how long that he was deflating them balls. I think they should go back and look at that, really, if they could. But anyhow, Dan Orlofsky need to go ahead and look at tapes of Joe Montana. He needs to check out the technique that Montana had all those years.
Myron Metcalf
And that's it. That's all I got for y'.
Gabe Neitzel
All.
Matt Jones
All right, that's. That's. That's better. Closer, warmer. Not better than Russ, but Brady not the goat. Is. Is it. It's a.
Myron Metcalf
It's a take. I mean, I don't know what the Dude's got Super bowl rings for like 75% of his fingers. I mean, I don't know. That's kind of. I think that kind of makes you go, listen, listen, you. You gotta. You got. You have a rough week sometimes we can come back and be better. I feel like next week. One more try. One more, one more. All right, we got one more, though.
Matt Jones
All right, we're gonna go to Simon in Washington to see if he can save King of the mountain today. Simon, you've got 30 seconds and all the pressure of the segment.
Gabe Neitzel
All right, so here's the deal. Shay Gilgis Alexander will win six championships when he retires. He will be considered the second greatest guard to ever play after Michael Jordan. And here's why. The Thunder are the smartest organization. They have the most assets. They just won the title as the youngest team in the league. Second youngest since the 70s. Chad Holmgren will only get better. He's an incredible defender, good shooter. And when they have salary cap issues, they outdraft everyone else. Do you see how many undrafted players are on that team? Second round picks. Casen Wallace. Nobody knew how good he was. He's starting in the NBA Final one.
Matt Jones
Okay.
Myron Metcalf
I like. I mean, I like it. I like it. I thought it was actually pretty strong. I thought he was pretty good.
Matt Jones
I think Simon was the best of today. I don't think he unseats Russ in Indiana as the current king of the mountains.
Myron Metcalf
I'm fine with that. I thought he was good. Yeah. What'd you think, James? I mean, he was good. That was the best one we had all day for sure. It was. It was. I'm on the. I mean, I mean, I'm on the fence on whether it should overtake.
Gabe Neitzel
You know what?
Matt Jones
The take was good. Like SGA is going to be.
Myron Metcalf
Is going to win six titles and will be considered the second best player ever in the NBA is a hot take. He. It was just a little long winded in his actual explanation.
Matt Jones
And if you're waffling, like to me, if you're going to unseat the champ, James, you know this. You can't. You know, the tie goes to the champ. Fair. Tie goes to the chair.
Myron Metcalf
You got to.
Matt Jones
You got to beat the champ. There was no McRib reference.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, that's the thing there. So Russ gave us McRib the prime rib. So I like Russ. State as champion. On another note, I was told people are coming at us gay because the epidural apparently is something that people get all the time for back pain. Not just like in child and labor. So there's a bunch of people who mostly like over 40s dudes. Okay, wait a minute, I got one. Oh, you on epic girl Twitter now. Like just sit on the couch and have a.
Matt Jones
That's tough, Myron. Myron takes two weeks off from Twitter, has to redownload the app, and now finds himself in epidural Twitter.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, people are coming at me. It's like relaxing your Epsom salt bath and let me do radio please.
Matt Jones
We get to the biggest stories in baseball. Rustin Indiana, still the king of the mountain. You have to wait until next week to see if you can unseat him. We get to the biggest stories of baseball next Sunday morning on ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf
Matt and Myron the Podcast.

See details online Check out Cubs Cardinals tonight, Sunday night baseball coverage right here on ESPN Radio starting at 6:00pm Eastern Time. This is Sunday Morning on ESPN Radio on the ESPN app. Sunday Morning as always, presented by Progressive Insurance. I'm Gabe Neitzel in from Matt Jones, hanging out with Myron Metcalf. We've got some big stories going on in baseball, the biggest probably being the Milwaukee brewers because it's gone from, okay, they're the hottest team in baseball to they're significantly, record wise, the best team in baseball. Closest team to them is the Dodgers. Four and a half games back. They have the best run differential in baseball as well. Still, some people aren't believing in our brew crew though. Myron, do you believe the brewers are the best team in baseball?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I believe it. You know, I mean every statistical advantage they have right now says that as much. They just don't have the sexy start at everybody knows, you know, they don't have the big name like an Aaron Judge or a Shohei Ohtani. So people may not be believers, but you can't look at the numbers. The win streak, what the only team that's had three seven game winning streaks this season. So they're playing special baseball right now and you hope it continues. I think I'm a little, a little superstitious, Gabe. Like I wish maybe we shouldn't talk about it as much because Wisconsin history suggests that that's when things go south. But you know what I mean. But it's cool to watch.
Matt Jones
It is fun. Andrew Vaughn has been somebody who has been unbelievably good for them and been incredibly hot. He's played like Aaron Judge since he got called up by the brewers after a mid season trade with the White Sox. He is going to cool off, I promise you. He's not going to be Aaron Judge, but, but they've got guys who have been cold, like William Contreras, who's been one of the best catchers in baseball the last two years, who hasn't been great offensively. This year he's starting to heat up and that's what makes me think something like that is sustainable. Meanwhile, are the Yankees, are their struggles going to keep them out of the postseason? Because when you take a look at where they are, they are now in third place in the American League East. They're two and a half games behind the Red Sox for the top wild card spot. But they're only a half game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians who are hot for the final spot in the postseason. Are the Yankee struggles for real and are they going to be able to overcome them?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, I mean, I, I think Aaron Boone was in the stands at the Old Timers game, trying to see who could help him out. You know, he's looking at Clemens, you know what I mean? He's looking at Rivera before the Achilles tear, trying to figure out who could boost his rotation because they just don't look good. I mean, I feel like the Yankees, it's one thing if you say this is a blip. You know what I mean? They're the Yankees. It's a long season, Gabe. I think we're past the it's a long season stage. Like, they just are what they are. And you look at Devin Williams and the struggles he's had, something is wrong in that organization right now, and I don't think you can just fix it in the weeks ahead.
Matt Jones
Yeah, it's because again, the trade deadline is coming on. There's no, oh, we'll just go get this guy, plug him in and that'll solve the problems. The Yankees problems are real, and I don't know if they're going to be able to get out of the tailspin. They're currently in 4 and 6 in their last 10 games. And you mentioned Williams. 5.73 ERA, three blown saves this season. It has not been great for Devin Williams. All right, MVP race. We'll start in the American League. You mentioned Aaron Judge, who still now is the favorite, briefly. Cal Raleigh was the favorite when Aaron Judge went down with his injury, but Raleigh still leads the league in home runs with 44. But not hitting him at the pace he was pre All Star. Not shocking being a catcher and the wear and tear that goes on at that position. But is it going to be Judge or is it going to be Cal Raleigh who eventually becomes the American League mvp?
Myron Metcalf
I always think in MVP races, you know, whoever's playing the sexier baseball, if you will, has an advantage. And no one's more, no one fits that more than Aaron Judge. It's just hard to beat a guy in pinstripes who plays the way that he does. But I do think that if Cal Riley were playing in la, if he were playing in a different market, I think he'd get more credit if you were playing a different position. You know, we haven't had, I think, a catcher as MVP since buster posey in 2012. So I think Cal Riley should be, but he won't be.
Matt Jones
Meanwhile, in the National League, I don't even think it's worth discussing the, the, the odds over at ESPN Baton Hiron show Hayes -1,000 to win the MVP hit his 40th home run of the year last night. Oh the way. So it's, it's kind of give it to him now.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, just hold the ceremony tomorrow.
Matt Jones
Why. Why even wait? More baseball coming up next Sunday morning, ESPN Radio.
Myron Metcalf

Myron Metcalf
Coverage begins tonight at 6 Eastern with first pitch at 7 Eastern on ESPN radio. And on ESPN.
Matt Jones
This is Sunday morning ESPN radio ESPN app SiriusXM channel 80. Gabe Neitzel in for Matt Jones along with Myron Metcalf as we welcome in Doug Glanville, ESPN MLB analyst who is going to be on the call tonight for Sunday Night baseball Cubs Cardinals coverage beginning here on ESPN Radio at 6:00pm Eastern. Doug will certainly get to the Cubs and Cardinals, but I got to talk about the team that they're looking up at, the best team in baseball, the Milwaukee brewers, who have a four and a half game lead over the next best team for the best record in baseball. They have the best play run differential in baseball. So the question to me, and maybe I'm biased, Doug, because I am a Brewers fan, isn't are the brewers the best team in baseball? I think that's undisputed at this point. But my question to you is are you a believer in the Milwaukee brewers and is this sustainable for an October run for the Crew?
Gabe Neitzel
I'm a believer in the Brewers. I've gotten a chance to do their postseason wildcard a couple of years out of the last few and, and you know when Craig Counsel was at the helm that now, now he's at the Cubs, in terms of managing, they were consistently a postseason team. You know, they were always good, but they were. They were sort of the good to great trying to get to that next step, you know, not being able to go deep into the postseason. And Pat Murphy is just going to continue that through his style. And Murphy doesn't, you know, attention to detail. He gives out leadership to all those that are people that he can rely on to kind of run the clubhouse where he doesn't have to be hands on and everything. He has like a. He has like a captain's counsel, so to speak. So he's thought about this. And keep in mind, Pat Murphy, their manager, has been the bench coach a long time. He's always alongside credit counsel and learned a lot. So I do think he knows the missing pieces to be able to punch it through. They didn't necessarily make big splashes at the trade deadline, but they have a lot of good players that just sort of play within their style. They're aggressive, you know, they pitch, they've gotten the timely hitting. They're just doing a lot of things really well and better than anybody.
Myron Metcalf
The Cubs didn't make a bunch of moves at the deadline. Was that a mistake and is that something that could cost them in the playoffs potentially?
Gabe Neitzel
The Cubs made some moves, but there were more accent pieces. You know, they got Rogers, they got Kitchbridge to bolster their bullpen. They were looking for guys that can get ground balls to use a really excellent defense with for instead of the sort of fly ball pitchers or the strikeout. So they did make moves that helped, like Willie Castro, for example, gives him that super utility player that can play any position. He's a switch hitter, he's got some power. So they didn't get a Yonio Suarez, for example, the third base, which was a question, but it's hard to say that they needed to do that when they were scoring over five runs a game. I mean, they have a good offense and you know, they scored nine runs last night against the Cardinals and they beat you by discipline, they beat you by power. They get on base, they just cause havoc. So they're still a contender. The big question to me is on the pitching side and you know, who is that third starter in that, in that game and the best of five and the best of seven. The good news for the Cubs and the Cubs fans, you know, guys like Jamison Taion or Javier Assad who are injured pitchers from the rotation who've had great success, they might be coming back soon. And that might be the best addition they can make instead of training by getting guys healthy.
Matt Jones
Talking with Doug Landville, ESPN MLB Analyst on the call tonight for Cubs Cardinals It's Sunday night baseball on ESPN Radio with coverage beginning at 6:00pm Eastern. This is Sunday Morning on ESPN Radio. Pete Crow Armstrong has been fantastic for the Cubs all season long. He's third in MVP odds, 27 homers, 78 RBI. What do you think was able to click for Pete Crow Armstrong to take that next jump in his career?
Gabe Neitzel
Just freedom. You know, Pete Crossroad is just about playing free and just doing things without any boundaries, any limits. There's no ceiling. That's how he approaches the game and it shows because he's fearless out there and talk about impacting the game in so many different ways. That's what Pete Crobstrom was able to do. It's, it's more than the 27 home runs and 30 doubles and, you know, you know, practically 30, 30 type of guy. Already said he brings that speed and, and impact on the bases. He brings it in the outfield, he brings it with his arm. He's just everywhere and he is the true catalyst and obviously one of the best players in the game at such a young age. But he's hacking. He's up there just swinging there. Whether it's a plan, you know, he's just up there and he has to swing. He's one of the most aggressive hitters in the game. First bit, swinging in the zone, swinging, chasing and swinging. And right now he's making the contact. He's going to have his struggles because he has a huge zone. He's swinging to everything. He also doesn't, haven't really figured out lefties as well as a hitter, but he's just an electric player.
Myron Metcalf
Doug, you've been around obviously a lot of struggling pitchers in your career. With a guy like Devin Williams. I think he said I stinked the other day. Mariano Rivera talked to him before the Old Timers game and told him, hey, you got to just forget about it, move forward. How hard is it to help a guy kind of in that kind of a situation and how important is his whatever happens in the weeks ahead for the Yankees and what they ultimately do.
Gabe Neitzel
You know, it's a big challenge because, you know, first of all, you're doing it in the middle of a season in New York, which is now times 10. And you know, he's had such an incredible career and we talked about the brewers earlier. He was the anchor of a lot of those brewers teams that went as far as they did. You know, when you have a closer like that, you have a Josh hater. You have Devin Williams. Historically, it just shortens the game. You know, you manage for eight innings and you're like, I know who's coming in on the night. And he's pretty much automatic. That's what Mariano Rivera brought. That's what Devin Williams brought. And he got, you know, beat in the postseason last, you know, last year with the big home run by Pete Alonso. And you know, he just hasn't gotten any rhythm in New York. Now the Yankees have made moves around him. They started off whether Luke Weaver was closing or whether they now made these huge trades to get Bednar and to get Doval, who are two closers in their own right from his. They have all the high levers they need. Now it's just putting him in positions where he could be successful. It might be in the fifth inning, it might be in the sixth inning. And just getting used to that role because if you ever can find it, what he had before now you're talking about a Yankee team that has three closers. So you talk about shortening the game eight days. I shorten it to like six. And you're going to win a lot of ballgames where you have that kind of offense and the game is only six innings long.
Matt Jones
Doug Landville, ESPN MLB analyst, joining us here on Sunday Morning ESPN Radio, ESPN App. I'm Gabe Neitzel along with Myron Metcalf. A team that is now hot on the heels of not just the Yankees, but the Tigers in their own division. The Cleveland Guardians are hot. They've picked up 10 games in the standings in the AL Central over the last 32 days. So they're getting closer to the Tigers. They're now just within a half game of the Yankees for that final wild card spot. What has clicked and what has allowed them to suddenly emerge in the postseason picture?
Gabe Neitzel
Yeah, I mean, it's a great story. And I think you look at the Tigers, partly, the Tigers tripped up a lot. You know, they, they lost Kerry Carpenter. And the way the Tigers work is more of a platoon team, right? They have a lineup kind of for righties and a lineup for lefties or they bring in guys, whatever. There's an arm change, right? So you do that. And the problem is when Kerry Carpenter went down, he was their big left handed bat that really beat up on righties and it sort of tilted their balance. And I thought that was a key reason why the Tigers started to struggle because they really were built More on the run prevention team that was scoring a lot of runs and the question was how sustainable that is given their approach. The Guardians have gotten hot as the Tigers have faltered a little bit. So that gave them a lot of momentum. And Stephen Vogt, their manager, you know, he's always seen as one of the great minds of the game, the great communicators. We got to talk to him a couple of weeks ago and he talks about, look, I'm kind of still a player, I have the mindset of a player. So he understands these struggles, he understands expectations, he understands the patience and as cliche as he as. And he'll say this is that it is one day at a time and he's going back to some of the roots of the Guardians. They're not going to beat you and bash you by scoring tons of runs, but they have one of the great players of our era, Jose Ramirez, switch hitter, leader, plays hard, great defender, great baserunner, 30, 30 guy. You know, this is just an incredible player that's always under the radar, but opponents know exactly who he is. And, and then you have Stephen Kwan. So you have like two really big time players that when you connect the dots to some good pitching that's gotten better in this stretch, now all of a sudden you're going to compete and the Central was available and the Tigers kind of let the field get close. So you combine that with Stephen Vogt's leadership, you have a good team.
Myron Metcalf
Doug, it looks like Shohei is on his way to his fourth MVP. I think he's minus 1,000 in the NL MVP race. If I say Shohei Ohtani is the greatest hitter this game has ever seen, what would you say to that?
Gabe Neitzel
I mean, I'd say he's, I mean he's the greatest player. When you talk about like all around impact I've ever seen, I think the, the challenge with him is I'd say Aaron Judge is a better hitter, you know, like, and I say that because Judge, you know, I mean, he's first of all, you know, could win a batting title this year, right? So you're talking about batting average and power and probably I'd say more, more discipline, more even though, so, you know, get his walks mostly because people are smart and they pitch around them. But Judge is just that combination of if you throw it in his own, he's looking for it, you're done, like that's it, it's game over. He's taking his base, hits to right, he's hitting his ball out to right, he Hits for average, he walks, he's leading in all these categories. So if you isolate hitting, then it's hard to say Ohtani, I mean there's, there's a lot of great hitters. But Ohtani brings something that a lot of people don't bring, right. It was the athleticism, the steel, 50 bases and 50 home runs which had never been done before. It's the fact that he's a pitcher and he's one of the elite arms in the game. It's just the fact that he can, you know, cause havoc just by his presence alone with one swing of the bat. He's must see TV on top of it. So there's just, that's the X factor. But I think if you isolate hitting, I think there's some better hitters. But it's just a damage he's able to do is singular in some ways because he brings so many more elements to the table because you can use him in so many other roles.
Myron Metcalf
Greatest player, where is he? Right, real quick, what do you put on that list? I mean with all the things you mentioned with the pitching, the stone bases.
Gabe Neitzel
Yeah, I mean one, two, you know, I mean nobody, nobody's been 50, 50. So I just stopped there and be an elite pitcher, all star pitcher, starter and hitter. I mean who does that? Nobody. So he's in a class by himself. When I talk about all around players like who's better. Just, just incredible.
Matt Jones

Matt Jones
You take your peek.
Myron Metcalf
It's time to take your pick. On Sunday morning.
Matt Jones
We welcome back in James Steele to take us through some of the games we need to pick today. What's up, James?
Myron Metcalf
Yeah, let's start with NFL preseason. We have the Dolphins at the Bears.
Matt Jones
The Bears are three point favorites.
Myron Metcalf
Myron, who you got in this today? I think we'll always just be disappointed. I mean, Caleb Williams should be out there, right? I mean, that's the weird thing. And you got Mike McDaniel breaking up fights in practice. A lot is going on between these coaching staffs. I'm not going to pick the Bears who aren't really playing anybody. I mean, that's been the message from Ben Johnson. So I feel like the Dolphins may care more. Give me the Dolphins to win this game on the road.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I like the Dolphins. I like the number for the Dolphins just because it seems like there's value. Betting preseason is just you're betting on people that you have no idea who's going to be out there. Especially when you have a team like the Bears who aren't playing any starters. And especially for preseason week one, like what's the most somebody's going to play? Joe Burrow played two series and that's on the high end in the NFL. So I'm taking, I guess I will take the Dolphins. I will take the points.
Myron Metcalf
All right, so I'm betting the house on the Dolphins. Gotcha. Saints at Chargers. Today the Chargers are minus two and a half point favorites on espn. Bet Myron, who you got here? So I don't know what they're doing with their offensive line but I think this actually preseason is a big deal for the charges with the Rashawn Slater injury 11 days after he signed an eight figure deal. Now they got a lot to figure out. Joe Alt I think is moving to left tackle. You have Makai Becton who's been hurt, you know, what's his situation. So I think, I think the Chargers have a lot of questions that they have to figure out here in this preseason. But I'm not picking the Saints to win anything. So give me the Chargers.
Matt Jones
Yeah, when, when your regular roster is as bad as the Saints is, I can't imagine what your backups and you know, the guys who aren't going to be on the 53 look like. Plus when you have Jim Harbaugh as your coach, I just feel like you're always going to be prepared no matter what the game is, even the backups. It's part of the reason. It's like the hallmark of the Harbaugh family. It's why the Ravens and Jim's brother John won like 25 straight preseason games. So yeah, I'll take the Chargers in this one.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. All right, let's move on to Major League Baseball and we'll go to tonight the Cubs and Cardinals on Sunday night. Baseball, you can hear that right here starting at 6pm Eastern.
Matt Jones
Cardinal Cubs are slight favorites here tonight. Minus 120 on ESPN.
Myron Metcalf
Bet. Myron, who do you got here? Yeah, I was debating that. I mean I'll pick the Cubs. I mean I think they're obviously a team that's gotten hot sort of at the right time as Doug Glanville said. Added some pieces that I think have strengthened their depth more than anything. I'm going to pick the Cubs, but not very convincingly.
Matt Jones
Yeah, I'll take the Cubs as well. I guess I just have more confidence in, in show to Imanaga who's on the mound for them over Sonny Gray for the Cardinals. And look, the Cubs, they need to start trying to keep pace with the Milwaukee Brewers. It wasn't that long ago where the Cubs were in command of this division. Now they're five games behind the Brewers. There is a very important a week from Monday five game series between the Cubs and Brewers and right now they're in a position where if they won all five games against the brewers in that series they would just be even with the brewers because the brewers have been pulling away. They need to make that series, make sure that it counts for a little bit more, and they need to try to gain some ground over the next week before that series starts.
Myron Metcalf
All right, moving on. The Astros and Yankees in the rubber game in this series, Yankees are the favorites.
Gabe Neitzel
But.
Myron Metcalf
But here's really what I wanted to ask you about. If I told you that Jason Alexander was pitching today for the Astros against the Yankees, what would you think?
Matt Jones
It's hilarious. That's what I would think. Absolutely hilarious. Yeah. I mean, I'm rooting for Jason Alexander.
Myron Metcalf
The cotton. The cotton uniforms, right?
Matt Jones
Yeah, that was his idea. You guys want to talk about hotels or winning baseball games?
Gabe Neitzel
Yeah.
Myron Metcalf
One of the better episodes, I feel like.
Matt Jones
Great Seinfeld, ref. Unfortunately for the Astros, Jason Alexander is not that great of a pitcher, especially going up against Max Freed rooting for Alexander. But think the Yankees ultimately win.
Myron Metcalf
Yeah. I mean, Astros made the calls Cray a move when the Twins basically had a rummage sale. You get any player you wanted from them.
Matt Jones
Price is definitely negotiable.
Myron Metcalf
That was like. I mean, that was. They literally put their whole house on ebay, and they were like, okay, tell us, what are you willing to give? I got a Carlos Correa over here. I got a couple of prospects. What do you need? We'll give it to you. The Astros. I've had a weird stretch, right? I mean, they had that great June, and they collapsed in July, and then they started August getting swept by Boston. Just not a lot of confidence to kind of where they're headed. I'll pick the Yankees. All right, up next, the Guardians, who we talked about a bunch today, picking.
Matt Jones
Up 10 games in the AL standings.
Myron Metcalf
Over the past 32 days there at the White Sox. Guardians are favorites on espn. Bet. Myron, who you got here? Well, you can't pick the White Sox to win anything, right? I mean, but the Guardians are. It's interesting as much as we're talking about the Yankees and so many other storylines, if I'm the Guardians, Gabe, I'm pretty happy that you're kind of under the radar right now, and no one's really focused on you, and you're just kind of quietly gaining ground in that wild card conversation. So I like the Guardians to win here, but also one of the better underplayed stories in baseball right now.
Matt Jones
Yeah, the White Sox actually had been playing good baseball since the All Star break, and then they promptly decided, nah, we need to lose six in a row. Stat. And that's what they've done. So the White Sox are back to being the White Sox. I'm with you with the Guardians. And yet they are a tremendous, tremendous story. Unbelievable what they've been able to do, just quietly sneaking up on everyone. And now with the Yankees continuing to stumble, them being a wild card team seems like a, it is a real possibility because they're only a half game back and they've done it quietly outside, of course, of, of Hammer and Emmett, who just, you know, sing the prizes of the Gardos all the time. But. But yes, I would take the Guardians in this one over the White Sox.
Myron Metcalf
Okay, on to a game you guys will be paying attention to today. The Mets and Brewers. The brewers are small favorites on espn. Vet Sean Mania on the mound for the Mets. He's one on one with a 3.52 ERA. Quinn Priester on the mound for the Brewers, 11. 2. 3.15 ERA. Myron, who you got today? Brewers fans are out there despite the floods. I mean, they're literally cars stranded outside the ballpark that can't get off the highway. So, you know, those fans are committed. You know, the Mets have some questions about their rotation going forward and what that's going to look like. I'm not picking against a Brewers team that's just been the hottest team in the lead, the best team in the league. And I think that, think that momentum will continue.
Matt Jones
A lot of the attention, understandably so, goes to Jacob Mizarowski because he throws 103 miles an hour. Got selected to the All Star team. But Quinn Priester has been really solid for the brewers all season long. He has a chance to be in that conversation for Rookie of the Year. He has won his last 10 straight decisions. So, yeah, I like Quinn Priester. I like the brewers in the Mets and keep the winning streak going for the Brew Crew. Hottest team in baseball. Best team in baseball all wrapped up into one, even though nobody knows any of the names of their players.
Myron Metcalf
I love it.
Matt Jones
I love it. It just drives so many other fan bases, including the Cubs, crazy. By the way. You can listen. Cubs card.
Myron Metcalf
No, we don't care about that. Let them. Let them.
Matt Jones
It's fantastic. It's just delicious. Absolutely delicious.
