This is Matt and Myron. The podcast.
Jonathan Zaslow
Matt Myron, he's Mark Zinno. I'm Jonathan Zaslow. This is Sunday Morning on ESPN Radio. We are presented by Progressive Insurance, San Bernard Bundle, Auto, Home or motorcycle insurance. Visit progressive.com don't worry, you'll be able to hear your pals Matt Kyron tonight, 5pm Eastern Time right here on ESPN Radio's Men's Bracketology. That's at 5pm and then right after that, you have the Women's Bracketology special. That's gonna be at 8pm right here Eastern time with Q. Myers and Victoria Arlen. So it's all getting started now, Zeno. I got, yeah, I got game day on my television here in the Zazlow Mansion Network studios. You got your pals up there getting ready for the SEC championship, which is in one hour from now. That's going to be on espn, Tennessee and Florida. But it's all getting going because starting in a few minutes, you got the Ivy League tournament file final, Cornell, Yale. That's on espn too. You're especially into that one.
Mark Zinno
Yeah, I'm on the wrong side. It looks like I bet Yale.
Jonathan Zaslow
What do you mean it looks like? How does it look like that?
Mark Zinno
Well, because the, the money is moving in the opposite direction.
Jonathan Zaslow
Oh, okay.
Mark Zinno
I mean, the line opened up at six and a half. I got it at five and a half. Now down to four and a half at certain shops. ESPN bet also at five right now. So, I mean, it's one of those things where, look, that's not always right, especially when you have a limited sample set of games that everybody can bet on. They're more focused on the five college basketball games today than anything else. So there will be a higher number of bets than normal that might move the line. But this is the shortest number that Yale has laid to anybody in their last 10 games.
Jonathan Zaslow
Really?
Mark Zinno
Yes. The only other time they laid less than seven to anybody was a game at Cornell, and they won by 15 and scored 103 points. So that's why I jumped on Yale because it was just the shortest number that they've seen. They're laying eights, nines, tens, elevens against everybody in the Ivy League because they're that much better. Got a short number here, so let's see if they can cover it.
Jonathan Zaslow
Now here's what's at stake today. All right. And according to Joe Linardi bracketology latest projections, he believes Auburn could legitimately be dropped from number one overall. It's been thought of for a while now that they are going to be the number one overall seed in the NCAA term which Zeno and I both believe it. I don't know. I don't have. Overrated is the right word. But is, is there that much of a diff. I don't know there's difference at all between the number one overall seed and the second number one seed. It seems more like a thing that you could just say, hey, we're the number one overall seed in the NCAA tournament. But Lenardi does highly doubt that the committee would drop them from the number one overall number one seed based off of yesterday's loss. Now Tennessee, this gets interesting. All right. Tennessee could surpass Florida for, for the last number one seed because we're assuming it's going to be Auburn, Duke, Houston, Tennessee could surpass Florida for the last number one seed if Tennessee. That's coming up in an hour now. I just told you, make sure you're listening. That's on ESPN television. But he also doubts the committee would do that. I mean maybe if Tennessee smokes Florida, which, I mean, let's be honest, that's not going to happen. How about yesterday? Speaking of which, the Florida Gators big time second half against Alabama here was the final call advancing to the SEC championship today. Bennett Anderson gets it across half court. Chop this one up for the Gators. Anderson's mob by his teammates. And the Gators with a statement win here in the semifinals, beat Alabama, the fifth ranked team of the country. Fourth ranked Florida 104, Alabama 82. What a moment here for this club and they will play for a championship tomorrow here in Nashville against Tennessee. Chop it up, baby. That's Sean Kelly from Learfield as the Gators take on the volunteers today, 1pm Eastern. They split the season series. That includes a game where the Volunteers held Florida to just 44 points in a blowout loss to the Volunteers. But Zinno, you know we've talked to people today here on Sunday morning. This Florida Gator team a lot of folks believe are the best in the Country.
Mark Zinno
Well, you got to look at these two games, right? The game at Florida, Florida blew out Tennessee and held them to 43 points. And the game in Tennessee, Tennessee blew out Florida and held them to 44 points.
Jonathan Zaslow
Well, I guess the reason that I bring up Florida being held to 44 is because, like yesterday, yes, they scored 104 against Alabama.
Mark Zinno
They could score 100 in the blink of a eye, but Tennessee also can hold you to 50 in the blink of an eye. So it goes both ways. Look, I think this is all minutiae that ultimately is not going to matter for either one of these teams, right? If Tennessee and Florida are Final Four teams, they're going to meet a legitimate opponent in the sweet 16 and the elite Eight to get there. And they're going to have to get over the hump, something that these. Tennessee hasn't done under their current, you know, structure with Rick Barnes, but Florida hasn't done, obviously, in a long time as well.
Jonathan Zaslow
Zeno, in order to justify it, I know you hate hearing it, it looks like we're definitely gonna have 13 SEC teams in the tournament field, maybe even 14 teams. In order to justify it, how many SEC teams need to make the Final Four? Does it have to be more than two? Can you imagine three Final Four teams? That's crazy.
Mark Zinno
I don't. I'm not somebody who justifies the. The entrance into the tournament by the performance in the tournament. Those are two separate things. They're just not related. I mean, you don't validate the committee's assessment by whether a team wins or loses in the first round. That's. That's never been accurate. That never will be accurate. They're completely separate events that have nothing to do with one another. So there's no way to know what any of these teams, who they're going to be playing in the next round, what the matchup is, where they're going to be playing, the travel. So they're completely separate events. I would phrase it this way. You as a betting man, if I gave you to win the national title right now, SEC team versus the field sec. I would. Well, the field would be favored even.
Jonathan Zaslow
If we're talking 14 teams.
Mark Zinno
Yes, the field would absolutely be.
Jonathan Zaslow
And two of them are number one seats.
Mark Zinno
The field would absolutely be favored.
Jonathan Zaslow
Okay, by a lot, I mean, the.
Mark Zinno
Field would be like -150 and, you know, the SEC would probably be about maybe plus, you know, 135, 140 somewhere in that range.
Jonathan Zaslow
But that's. That's not a big dog okay, no.
Mark Zinno
It'S, it's not a big dog, but because when you look at the top of, of the whole thing, I mean, you have to figure that Duke and Houston are probably their two chief, chief pieces of competition with Michigan State maybe and Iowa State being, you know, in. In the third. But, you know, without knowing how, you'd have to see how the bracket shape up because there's going to be a lot of SEC on SEC crime going on here at some point in time throughout this tournament.
Jonathan Zaslow
Now, not a. Not a projected number one seed with bracketology. Joe Linardi's bracketology projected them as a potential number two seed. And that's after winning the Big east tournament yesterday. St John's it is a championship Saturday in New York City, and this is a victory for Saint John's. Saint John's won the outright regular season title. They're the Big east tournament winner. You know who your Big east champions are. St John's defeats Creighton 82, 66 in the title game. John Minko from Learfield with the final call as the Johnny's top. Creighton 82, 66. They win the Biggies championship. They're back, baby Zinno. The Johnnies. Patino fighting.
Mark Zinno
Rick Patinos. You gotta love it. You see what Patino said after the game. They asked him, I was going to celebrate. He said, I'm going to go have a bottle of Jameson's.
Jonathan Zaslow
I just, it's. It's cool because it's someone in Rick Patino who gets it in New York City. He understands the culture surrounding basketball and, you know, obviously failed in his time there otherwise. And now he's, he's doing an unbelievable job with Saint. And just a second year, just the second year and they're 30 and 4. Do I have that right up top of my head. Really incredible job. And finally, you know, we're talking Auburn, Houston, Florida. The projected fourth number one seed, the Duke Blue Devils win the ACC yesterday. So Hubbard takes the inbounds pass in the backcourt, spins it to James, who stands under the basket on the left side, and the final score in Charlotte. Dukes 73, Louisville 62. The Duke Blue Devils are champions of the ACC tournament for a 23rd time. There you go. The next closest team is 18 tournament wins. That's UNC. So the Duke Blue Devils win their 23rd ACC tournament championship. Call courtesy of ESPN Radio. Duke 73, Louisville 62 and Cooper Flag. We. We haven't, you know, the coach is saying, John Shire said they expect him to be available next week. But Sinnoh, I don't think either one of us believe that he is needed to be available next weekend.
Mark Zinno
No, I don't think he is at all. I don't. I don't think for a moment that Cooper Flag needs to play in the 116 game.
Jonathan Zaslow
Certainly not the first game.
Mark Zinno
He might not, depending on who the opponents are, might not even play in the second round game.
Jonathan Zaslow
Like do you suit him up the second game with the intention of sitting him and maybe if things get hairy, you play him in the second game over the weekend.
Mark Zinno
I mean, look, if you're going to suit him up, you play him, right? Like if he's good enough to actually put a uniform on, I don't think you toy around with it. I don't know if there's a reason to even go down that road. Like if he's good enough to play, then play him. But if he's not, then don't sweat it. Live in street clothes It's a lot.

Oh yes. Sunday morning on ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance. I'm Jonathan Zaslow. He's Mark Zinno. Zinno, this is a very big day. I mean the music is a duh giveaway. But do you know why this is a very big day?
Mark Zinno
Cuz it's 3:16 baby.
Jonathan Zaslow
It's 3:16 day. A happy 316 day to everyone out there who celebrates. Of course that means it's stone cold Steve Austin Day. 316. Maybe a get a couple Steve Wisers there. Zinno, you kick back on the couch, you'll watch some college basketball today. Maybe the Gators and Vols at 1pm Eastern on ESPN. You got a couple Steve Wisers. You know, you know what it means when the glass breaks. Come on.
Mark Zinno
I mean I think stone cold Steve Austin, you know, sort of perfected the idea of trash talking. You know, yell at people, give them the middle finger, give them the stunner.
Jonathan Zaslow
And then drink beer and drink lots of beers.
Mark Zinno
I mean that's how simple is life.
Jonathan Zaslow
Just chugging lots of beers in front of everybody on a nightly basis. Good for him. So today a happy 316 day to everybody who celebrates. Tune into NBA action tomorrow night. Let's bring in Nick Carty. Produce the show up there in Brisbane.
LinkedIn Voiceover
No, no, no, no, no. Mikey C today.
Jonathan Zaslow
Oh, hello, Mikey C. Hello, boys.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right, let's start with a game that's already in progress. We'll talk about the smart people. The, the Ivy League championship is going on right now. 16 points for Cornell against 11 for Yale. So Cornell versus Yale.
Mark Zinno
Told you I was on the wrong side.
LinkedIn Voiceover
Yeah. Who you got, Mark, Cornell or Yale? Yale's favored by five and a half.
Mark Zinno
I may live bet Cornell at this point in time. I mean, you know, Yale. Yale's been the best team in this conference all season long by a wide margin. And yeah, they're gacking it away here in the finals. So I don't know. I mean, could. Could Yale come back? Absolutely. They could. It's probably a little bit too early to call it yet. We need to be a little bit more patient, but nonetheless.
Jonathan Zaslow
Yeah, a little bit too early. A little bit too early. I mean, I'm going with Yale. Zinno, you're telling us about, you know, Auburn's body of work. 30 plus games the entire season. It shouldn't come down to, you know, what's happened recently. They should still be the number one overall seed in the tournament selection show later tonight. How about Yale's whole body of work? Like you just mentioned, we're nine minutes into the game here. I'm going Yale. You overreacting.
Mark Zinno
Okay.
Jonathan Zaslow
All right. The.
LinkedIn Voiceover
The game of the day for Zaz. 1:00pm on ESPN. The SEC final. Number eight, Tennessee at number four, Florida. According to ESPN, ESPN bet the Gators are favored by four and a half mark.
Mark Zinno
Tough call. Coin flip game here. I mean, if you look at the way the two regular season matchups unfolded, Zaz, they were dominated by the team on the home floor. You're on a neutral floor right now. What does that mean? I don't know, but I think it's.
Jonathan Zaslow
Going to end in a tie.
Mark Zinno
Yeah, right. I think you'll get a sense here of how these teams are going to react in the tournament a little bit when they start facing, you know, better competition. I have to give the edge to Florida. I think they are the best team in the country right now.
Jonathan Zaslow
I'm going Florida. That's my school, it's my alma mater. And I'm a huge front runner when the Gators are good. So I'm very, very into it. Not a fraud whatsoever. But here's also the thing. For Tennessee to win this SEC tournament championship, you're telling me on back to back days they have to beat Auburn and Florida. I mean, Come on. That, that. That's. That's a heck of a feat right there. We're talking the number one team and the next team is who most people right now believes the best team in the country. So I'm going Gators.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right. Also at 1 o'clock, you got the Atlantic 10 final. George Mason against Ryan Odom and VCU. VCU favored by eight and a half.
Mark Zinno
You know, I mean, look, everyone's going to be rooting for vcu, or at least the bubble teams are. If George Mason somehow pulls off the upset here, somebody is one of those poor 13th or 14th SEC teams won't get to go to the tournament because they didn't deserve it anyway. So I'm rooting for George Mason here.
Jonathan Zaslow
I want the chaos as well. I'm going to go with George Mason, too. I like the idea of bids being stolen away from teams who are going to wind up complaining when the reality of it is if you had a bid stolen away, you shouldn't have been on the bubble in the first place. So I'm going George Mason.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right. 3:30 on CBS. You got number 18 or no. 3:33pm on ESPN. American Athletic Conference UAB verse. Number 16, Memphis Tigers, favored by three.
Mark Zinno
And a half center again rooting for UAB. Just because I don't want any more SEC teams in this thing, so. But I don't think they could do it. I don't think they're anywhere near as good as Memphis.
Jonathan Zaslow
I'm rooting for UAB as well, because like we just said, I want the chaos. But this Memphis team, they're going to prove too much. I mean, they've been sitting atop the American Athletic Conference the entire season. Just two losses in conference. I'm going with Memphis.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right, then like I said, at 3:30, the Big Ten final. Number 18, Wisconsin versus number 22, Michigan. Wisconsin favored by three and a half mark.
Mark Zinno
Michigan is forgiven.

They are. I mean you can't win nine games this year in conference, including the tournament, by three points or less and expect me to believe that for the second straight game you're going to do it against a superior team. Do you realize that in the game against Maryland, somehow Michigan out rebounded Maryland 47 to 18? They also caught Maryland on an off shooting night. I don't think you're doing that in back to back games against a superior team in Wisconsin. Give me the Badgers.
Jonathan Zaslow
I'm going with the Wolverine. That's right. Michigan coming off a great last second victory yesterday over Maryland. I'm not trying to take anything away from Wisconsin, but I'm going with the Wolverines here and I think they complete what, what is probably a really surprising season with the Big Ten tournament championship.
Mark Zinno
Yes, very surprising.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right, let's talk. Got time for some pro basketball? 1pm right here on ESPN radio and ABC. You got the Magic and the hot Cavaliers. Cleveland favored by ten and a half.
Mark Zinno
You know, I'm not laying ten with Cleveland at this point. As good as they are. It just feels like, you know, when you get to this point of a streak, you're going to start to face a lot of opponents that are hungry to snap the streak and you sort of get a little bit complacent, like just too many points here. I'll take the Magic plus ten and a half.
Jonathan Zaslow
Yeah, I'm, I'm going To take the Cavaliers, I mean this even though they're laying 10 and a half points, 17th consecutive win, you know they are dealing with some injuries here but they've beaten the, they're 20 against the Magic right now including a 40 point, that's right, 40 point win over the Magic just a few weeks ago. This a Magic team that has been taking a nosedive since the midway point of the season. That continues here. Cavs win by double figures. They cover.
LinkedIn Voiceover
All right, 3:30 on ABC. You got the Suns at the Lakers LA losers of four in a row but favored by three and a half mark.
Mark Zinno
I mean who's playing for the Lakers at this point? Do we know for sure?
Jonathan Zaslow
Do we have any status updates?
LinkedIn Voiceover
Maybe Bronnie, we got a lot of.
Jonathan Zaslow
Game time decisions and, and yes, maybe Bronnie, you saw he had a corner three over Jokic. Even though he missed four out of his five shots that game, he did make one.
Mark Zinno
Lakers badly need to snap this losing streak here. As we talked about earlier in the show with Golden State starting to pour it on here and not that winning the Pacific Division matters, but there's only two games separating the two of them in the standings for the Pacific Division. And yeah, I mean until I know his play, if The Lakers get LeBron or Luca back like okay, I'll lay two and a half. That's a short enough number but other than that it'd be a stay away.
Jonathan Zaslow
But I lean Lakers, I'm leaning toward the Lakers here. The Suns have won two out of the three games this season against the Lakers. But the most recent matchup, which was a 27 point victory for the Suns, the most recent matchup came at the end of November. That's four months ago. That was back when the Phoenix Suns had a pulse. So the Lakers, this is the kind of game where if you do lose it to a lowly Phoenix Suns team, you're going to start getting a lot of whispers out there about the validity of the validity of the Lakers despite the absence of star players. So I think the Lakers, you get a good performance out of them here and I think the Lakers snap that skid on the home floor today against the Phoenix Suns. There you have it. That's how it's done right there. Zinno, excellent job. I mean good luck with with Yale and Cornell the rest of the way here. Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron - Episode: Hour 3: Selection Sunday!
Release Date: March 16, 2025
In this episode of "Sunday Mornings with Matt and Myron," hosts Matt Jones and Myron Medcalf dive deep into the intricacies of Selection Sunday, analyzing team performances, tournament seedings, and the potential impact on the NCAA tournament landscape.
The discussion kicks off with a focus on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) tournament. Both hosts analyze Auburn's standing and the implications of recent games:
Matt Jones highlights Auburn's dominance, noting, "Auburn has been a powerhouse all season, and their consistency should keep them as the number one overall seed" (02:38).
Myron Medcalf counters by expressing skepticism about seed adjustments based on recent losses, stating, "Joe Linardi doubts the committee will drop Auburn from the top seed despite yesterday's loss. Stability over recent performance should prevail" (02:17).
A significant portion of the conversation centers around the Florida Gators, who have recently secured a commanding win against Alabama:
Myron shares the excitement of Florida's victory, saying, "The Gators with a statement win here in the semifinals, beat Alabama, the fifth ranked team of the country. What a moment for this club" (05:03).
Mark Zinno adds perspective on Florida's offensive and defensive prowess: "They could score 100 in the blink of an eye, but Tennessee also can hold you to 50 in the blink of an eye" (05:19).
Shifting focus to the Big East Conference, the hosts celebrate Saint John's impressive performance:
Jonathan Zaslow announces, "Saint John's wins the Big East tournament, defeating Creighton 82-66 in the title game. They're back, baby!" (08:30).
Mark Zinno praises Coach Rick Patino's leadership, remarking, "Rick Patino is doing an unbelievable job with Saint John's. Just their second year and they're 30-4. Truly remarkable" (08:37).
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) tournament concluded with Duke Blue Devils securing their 23rd championship:
Jonathan reports, "The Duke Blue Devils win their 23rd ACC tournament championship, defeating Louisville 73-62" (08:30).
Mark discusses player availability, stating, "Cooper Flag doesn't need to play in the first game. If he's good enough, just play him without hesitation" (10:07).
A substantial segment is dedicated to predicting outcomes across various conferences, supported by insights from Joe Linardi’s bracketology projections.
The Ivy League championship between Cornell and Yale is a key matchup:
Mark Zinno admits, "I was on the wrong side. It looks like I bet Yale" (15:47), but reevaluates his stance as the game progresses.
Jonathan Zaslow opts for Yale, citing their season-long performance: "I'm going with Yale. You overreacting" (16:11).
The SEC final pits Tennessee against Florida, with both teams having split the season series:
Mark Zinno describes it as a "coin flip game," emphasizing home advantage disparities: "The team on the home floor dominated their regular season matchups. On a neutral floor, it's anyone's game" (16:53).
Jonathan supports Florida, driven by personal allegiance: "I'm going Florida. That's my school, it's my alma mater" (17:23).
In the Atlantic 10, George Mason faces off against VCU:
Mark Zinno expresses a desire for upsets: "I'm rooting for George Mason. If they pull off the upset, it adds the chaos we love" (18:07).
Jonathan concurs, emphasizing the thrill of unexpected outcomes: "I want the chaos as well. I'm going with George Mason, too" (18:07).
The battle between UAB and Memphis is another focal point:
Mark Zinno leans towards UAB to limit SEC representation: "I'm rooting for UAB just because I don't want any more SEC teams in this thing" (18:59).
Jonathan predicts a Memphis victory based on their conference dominance: "I'm going with Memphis. They've been sitting atop the American Athletic Conference the entire season" (19:11).
The Big Ten showdown features Wisconsin against Michigan:
Mark Zinno advocates for Wisconsin, critiquing Michigan's recent performances: "They can't win nine games this year in conference by three points or less and expect to beat a superior team" (21:11).
Jonathan opts for Michigan, highlighting their resilience: "I'm going with the Wolverine. They complete a really surprising season with the Big Ten tournament championship" (21:02).
Transitioning to professional basketball, the hosts share their predictions for upcoming NBA matchups.
A game between the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers is under the microscope:
Mark Zinno remains cautious of Cavaliers' extended winning streak: "I'm not laying ten with Cleveland at this point. I'll take the Magic plus ten and a half" (22:09).
Jonathan trusts in the Cavaliers' experience and recent performances: "I'm going with the Cavaliers. They cover by double figures" (22:31).
