I've never been supported in my career. I've been nothing but criticized and hated on and picked apart. I didn't really ever want to go back into music because I felt so kind of stupid spending all my money on my music. Like maybe everyone was right. Spencer had believed in me so much and I just kind of felt like. Kind of like I had let us down somehow.
Rebecca Minkoff
Hey everyone. Welcome back to Superwomen. Today's guest is Heidi Montag. She is an incredible pop princess, amazing musician, mother of two. We don't talk about reality TV much on this episode, so sorry guys. What we do go deep on is what being underestimated feels like. How to overcome the tremendous bullying that not only she's been subject to, but how to reframe it for yourself and what it's like to have a career, have a resurgence after thinking that your dreams were in the dust. Take a listen.
Heidi Montag
I was in such excruciating pain and it completely changed my image and my reputation. And I was so incredibly criticized for being honest about what I had done.
Rebecca Minkoff
Did that feel like a slap in the face? Because here you're trying to be honest and then people are like, nah, we're still going to all over you.
Heidi Montag
I've always been very honest and very authentic. Like I'm not a liar. I'd rather take the consequences. But other people are really good at lying and they like it. But don't let other people's opinion be what makes you valuable. You need to feel good about yourself. Be authentic. Be who you are.
Rebecca Minkoff

Heidi Montag
I'm so honored to be on your podcast. You've had so many super women, so many power women, so thank you for having me. I was so excited. I'm a huge fan, long term fan, long time fan, so thank you.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah, I mean, we go back because you guys, the show was what, like help launch my career.
Heidi Montag
So I heard you say that recently on something and anyways, I was very interested in that because things have changed so much with so many times and it's, it is fairly interesting. I think it was your last podcast, you guys were talking about the inventory and.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah, yeah, no, if, if my dad hadn't said, hey, my friend son Trey wants to come to your fashion show and they're filming something for mtv, like, I probably wouldn't be sitting here talking to you today.
Heidi Montag
So crazy.
Rebecca Minkoff
I know, it's kind of wild. Okay, so one thing I wanted to touch on and why I was so excited, I'm going to read this because I wrote it and then I got chills. But you are a woman who, from what I've seen, was publicly underestimated, mocked for your ambition and then now we're watching in real time. And I would say in the last year or so, like people are and culture is re evaluating what they dismissed in you, but what you knew all along. And so I would love to just have you take me through the inception of your inspiration for your music and your performing and then how did you know to hold onto that when you feel like even if you don't care, but if the people that you need to help make the ecosystem go are like, I don't know, because I feel like. And I say this because it happens to so many of us.
Heidi Montag
Right?
Rebecca Minkoff
You know, like it happened to me. No one thought I could be a designer, you know, like, because I didn't come from the right background or there didn't have enough money or all the things. And it's just kind of like, I gotta figure this out.
Heidi Montag
I always wanted to do music. When I was really young, I wanted to do music. My mom had me in voice lessons and then I went to Italy and then I wanted to be in fashion and I didn't want to go back to high school. So I wanted to, you know, I met the Sony family. I was 17.
Rebecca Minkoff
Okay.
Heidi Montag
And I met the Missoni family and I became friends with a grandson, Otavi Omasoni. And I went to the fashion show in Milan and I met, you know, everybody there and I was like this, okay, I'll do this. Because it didn't seem realistic to do the music. And then once the show happened, I quickly got back into singing lessons because I was like, well, what do I really want to do? I'm in Hollywood, anything's possible. I want to do music. I've always wanted to do music. I don't think fashion is quite. I just felt kind of out of my realm because I'm not a good artist. Like, I went to fashion school and it was really hard for me.
Rebecca Minkoff
It's hard. But I was a terrible sketcher.
Heidi Montag
Oh, no, worse. Yeah, literally I'm like, I can't even draw a stick figure. Like, what the heck? And those croakies are they called?
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, they're the worst. They're the worst.
Heidi Montag
So I was just so discouraged in fashion school and I just, you know, I went to Academy of Art University in San Francisco and it was considered a really prestigious school at the time. It was under Parsons and Fit. It was like the third best fashion school in the country, I think at the time, or self proclaimed. I don't know. That's what they said. So I went there and it was incredible. And then I didn't want to be in San Francisco.
Rebecca Minkoff
I wonder why.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, you know, just I got chased by a few homeless people and one chased me into a car. Thank God this cab came and he was like, just get in. And like drove me away. And I was terrified. And I grew up in a really small town, so I didn't grow up with that. It wasn't like, fit on my survival skills with that. I was like, I need to get out of here. Anyways, the show happened, the music started happening and I met Spencer and he was like, you know, you have this music manager, but he's asking you to do rock music. And I don't. Is that what you want to do? And I said, no, I want to be pop princess, you know, like Britney Spears, hello. And he said, I will take you to David Foster. And I'll get you a meeting with David Foster and he'll be really honest with you. So he's like, whatever he says, like, it's not on me. He's super serious.
Rebecca Minkoff
And how did Spencer know David Foster?
Heidi Montag
And Spencer grew up with Brody Jenner, okay. And he had just shot an executive produce and created that show Princess of Malibu that was on Fox.
Rebecca Minkoff
Okay?
Heidi Montag
So he was like the youngest executive producer in the history of Hollywood. And he had just done that. So we had a great rapport with Foster. And then I went in, I met Foster, and he made me sing all these notes and all these scales. And he's like, you have tone. He's like, tone is the most important thing, one of the most important things in the music industry. He's like, so Britney Spears has a great tone. You have a great tone. You know, I will get you a record deal. And so he put together there at
Rebecca Minkoff
that moment, you have David Foster telling you he's going to get your record deal. Can we just tell me what that feels like? We can't go over that.
Heidi Montag
I know there's so. There's such a long story, like, in my head, it's so. Yes, I was thrilled. I was really excited. And I didn't know what that really meant or how that was going to play out. So I started talking to people about it and they're like, okay, well, let's see what they. What he offers. And what I was offered by Warner was a 360 deal. And that meant they would take part of my TV money, my clothing line money, because I had Heidi Wood at the time. And I was just getting out of debt from school. Like, I barely could pay rent. I just was paying my car. You know, I had thousands of dollars in debt, and I just couldn't let any dollar go at that moment. And I was like, I don't know, it's interesting what would have happened then. But I had Peter Lopez, who is Spencer's lawyer, and Michael Jackson's lawyer. And all of a sudden my lawyer advised me not to take the deal. And it's hard sometimes when you have such big shots because they have a different perspective. And maybe that wouldn't have been a good deal for someone else. Maybe it would have been a good deal for me. It's hard to tell. But we move forward. And then Spencer and I started putting together my own album. And that was superficial. My first album, and we worked really hard at it. We actually, like, would just try to get through the filming of the Hills. To get into the studio. So that's why so many things were like, yeah, whatever. Just give us the lines. Like, we gotta get out of here. We have studio time. I have, like, a producer.
Rebecca Minkoff
Mean, that wasn't real.
Heidi Montag
You know, some things.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah.
Heidi Montag
So we were just kind of a means to an end at the time. And then I had Ben Silverman said I could perform at Miss Universe because we were going on that show, I'm a celebrity, get me out of here. And that was the deal. Like, okay, we'll go on I'm a celebrity, get me out of here if you let me perform there. Because the year before, Lady Gaga performed, and it launched her into the stratosphere. So I was like, oh, my gosh. Okay. This is, like the moment, I think worldwide collectively, it was like a billion people watched that at the time. So I prepared for it, and I had the dancers, and I was so excited, and I had that moment. And then everything with I'm a Celebrity, Get Me out of here didn't play out very well.
Rebecca Minkoff
I missed that entirely. Okay.
Heidi Montag
Oh, my gosh. It was such a thing. So they told us Ben Silverman was like, yeah, you guys will go and live in the jungle, but you're not really going to live there. And we're like, okay, so where do we go? And he's like, there's a hotel nearby. You'll go at the hotel at night. You know, tv. Come on, guys. It's just tv, you know, reality tv. So we get there and they take our cell phones and they take everything. And if we would have been prepared, it would have been a different situation. And we told him, we're like, we're gonna quit, like, right away. We don't have time. I have my album coming out. I've been working on it for a year and a half. We all had this understanding, and he was like, you can quit anytime you want. All you say is, I'm a celebrity. Get me out of here. And we were doing it for charity. We weren't getting a check to, you know, like, it was a minimum check of, like, I don't know, a few thousand dollars or whatever. And then charity, right? So we were like, great, we'll make some money for charity. And then, you know, we're leaving. So we get there, and they're like, nope, you're not leaving. And here's your hammock. And we're like, excuse me, this is not what we were told, you know? And I grew up camping and in nature. Like, I'm a hardcore Colorado Right. Break horses getting dirty. Yeah. Like, I don't care.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
Right.
Heidi Montag
But I wasn't prepared. And we had an agenda and we had a timeline and have time to be playing this game. And you don't see producers, so you can't talk to anyone, so you're stuck here. And we're like, we need to see a producer. And they're like, would you like to see the psychologist? We're like, no, we don't want to see the freaking psychologist.
Rebecca Minkoff
You were literally trapped.
Heidi Montag
We were trapped. And they took our passports and they took everything, and we couldn't leave and we couldn't talk to our families and we couldn't talk to, like, give us our lawyer now. Like, you're literally kidnapping anyways. It was like a whole thing.
Rebecca Minkoff
Kidnapping.
Heidi Montag
Yeah. We're like, you're so.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
So.
Heidi Montag
It was crazy. The whole thing was crazy. So that didn't, you know, that was kind of a bad foot. We ended on with NBC for a minute with Ben Silverman, but we had been honest the whole time.
Rebecca Minkoff
Did he pull you from performing?
Heidi Montag
No, I did perform.
Rebecca Minkoff
Okay. Okay.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, So I did. I was still able to perform. We had a legal agreement. And then I had, right before my album launched, like, a few weeks before, I got the 10 procedures in one day, the cosmetic surgery. And I didn't really think about how that would impact my album coming out because I've had plastic surgery before. I had my nose done and I had my implants done. So I was like, oh, it's a pretty quick recovery. Not going to be out for the rest of the year. And then I got it, and it was horrific.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, my God.
Heidi Montag
And I was in such pain. And, you know, they called Spencer and they told him, you know, that I had, like, died in the recovery room because they had, like. I had overdosed off of Demerol or whatever. They, like, gave me too much.
Rebecca Minkoff
And it was like, did you actually die?
Heidi Montag
That's what they said. My heart stopped. They called Spencer and they're like, her heart stop. We think she might be able to come back. You need to get down here. And I had all these security guards in there because that had just happened to Michael Jackson. And so we were like, really on alert of like, okay, let's make sure no one's going to try to take us out. You know, if there's like a new world order or something, and they don't want me here, I don't know. So, yeah, my security guards, they called and they were like, this is really serious. And it took me Almost a year to recover from that surgery. I was in such excruciating pain, and it just really overshadowed the launch of superficial. And it completely changed my image and my reputation. And I was so incredibly criticized for being honest about what I had done.
Rebecca Minkoff
Right.
Heidi Montag
It was so looked down upon.
Rebecca Minkoff
Did that feel like a slap in the face? Because here you're trying to be honest, and then people are like, nah, we're still gonna all over you.
Heidi Montag
I feel like that was kind of the theme of my career then. Like, I've always been very honest and very authentic. Like, I'm not a liar. I'm, like, very against lying. I think it's like the worst thing in the world to do. And the truth just really sets you free for your own heart. Like, my mom taught me that at such a young age. It's like, I'd rather take the consequences and just be like, yeah, look, I messed up. Here's what happened. But other people are really good at lying and they like it. And so when other people do that or pretend they didn't get something done or, you know, it becomes, you know, kind of the game, and I just don't. I like to play my own game in my own way and being authentic and honest and. And true. So a part of me was anticipating that. But I also wanted girls and people to know, like, oh, I didn't grow into this nose, or it's okay to want to change yourself and. And do what you want, be who you want to be, and this is the industry and this is what happens. So I just kind of wanted to lift the veil of what happens in Hollywood when everyone was so coy about it.
Rebecca Minkoff
Wedding season is officially here, and I have to say, I love a summer wedding. The destination weddings, the beach weddings, the garden weddings, the black tie weddings where everyone suddenly becomes a movie star for one night. I love all of it. But let's be honest, the mental load of figuring out what to wear is real, because every invitation comes with some mysterious dress code. Wording. Cocktail attire, formal, black tie optional.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
Summer chic, festive.
Rebecca Minkoff
And somehow you're supposed to know exactly what that means. Personally, I think the best wedding guest outfit is one that respects the dress code and still feels like you. You want to look polished, obviously, but you also want to be comfortable enough to sit through the ceremony, survive cocktail hour, and fully commit on the dance floor later. For me, summer wedding style is all about fabrics that move, silhouettes that feel flattering, and pieces that don't feel overly stiff or fussy. Think soft draping asymmetry, beautiful color, elegant details, and accessories that elevate everything. And if you have multiple weddings this season, that's where getting strategic matters.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
Rewearing pieces is smart.
Rebecca Minkoff
Just switch the shoe, the bag, the jewelry, maybe the glam, and suddenly it
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
feels like a whole new look.
Rebecca Minkoff
If you're staring at an invite right now, wondering what to wear, this is where a personal stylist at Macy's can be such a game changer. You can book a free appointment and actually talk through the wedding where it is time of day, indoor outdoor dress code, what you feel best in, what you never want to wear again, and they help you build a look that works for the event and for you. Maybe it's a formal wedding and you need something elegant. Maybe it's a beach ceremony and you
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
need polished but breathable.
Rebecca Minkoff
Maybe it's a black tie optional and you need help decoding what that even means. What I love is that it saves you from panic ordering 10 random dresses online three days before the RSVP date.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
And because it's all in one place,
Rebecca Minkoff
you can finish the whole look, dress, shoes, bag, beauty. Without running all over town. Appointments are free, and right now you can also get 20% off your purchase with your stylist. So if wedding season has officially hit your group chat, consider this your sign to get ahead of it and show up looking incredible. Bring the fun back to shopping and visit a Macy's near you. Oh, like, there's a lot of people out there. They're like, I've had nothing done. I don't know what you're talking about. You're like, I see before and after pictures. There's a whole site dedicated to that.
Heidi Montag
You. I just saw you last week. Like, what do you mean? Yeah, it's so. It's so interesting, especially the people who publicly criticize me who have had so much work done. I was like, are you kidding me? Because everyone likes to jump on the bandwagon and get the their moment and their press and, you know, I'm just not about taking people down for.
Rebecca Minkoff
For their own satisfaction. Yeah, yeah. No, it's pretty terrible.
Heidi Montag
I always defend myself.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah.
Heidi Montag
But not. Not do that.
Rebecca Minkoff
Well, one thing I was, when I was doing research and listening to you and thinking about there's so much bullying online and just a regular old person who has 10 followers is bullied or little girls are bullied. Right. Like, the state of social media and young women is like a nightmare scenario. And those people aren't famous and aren't well known, and they don't know how to take that feedback and sort of not let it change their perspective. So if someone who's been in the most boiling pot in the center of that, what have you learned through going through that that you could say to someone who maybe feels an inkling of that, or to them, it feels like what you went through, even though no one's ever heard of them.
Heidi Montag
I would say take yourself out of the situation. You don't need to hear people's criticism. Turn off your comments. If you want to have your Instagram page, that's fine. But don't let other people's opinion be what makes you valuable. You need to feel good about yourself, be authentic, be who you are, because in five years, it's going to be cool, you know? So you just have to be honest and true and good to yourself and don't let other people who really don't care about you.
Rebecca Minkoff
Right?
Heidi Montag
They don't care. They don't care what you're wearing. They don't care what they do. They're just spewing hate or whatever because they're unhappy and they're going through something. So don't let people project what. What they're going through and their unhappiness on you. I've never said a negative comment about anyone online, ever. I would never even conceptualize leaving a negative comment like, who are these people? That's crazy. Like, oh, my gosh, what is wrong with you?
Rebecca Minkoff
What makes you feel good sometimes is I click on their profile and they're usually private with one follower. And I'm like, who the fudge cares the way you think?
Heidi Montag
Totally. I turn my comments off because I don't even want to accidentally see some hater because I don't care. I don't care what anyone says about me. I know who I am. And, you know, this life is short, and you just have to enjoy it and really focus and focus on who you want to be and where you want to go and what you want to do. There's so much noise and chaos and pressure to be a certain way, and it's the people who aren't that way that get rewarded in life, you know, and who enjoy your life. You just have to enjoy your life.
Rebecca Minkoff
So when you lost the house and Spencer was like, let's get this music to number one, and you saw the good side of social media, of people rallying, did that feel like I talk about my redemption arc? Like, I quit Housewives. My book came out the next day. I was on, like, national tv. All this great press, right? And I was like, that's my fucking redemption, bitches. And I had a lot of other things planned that I could just be like, good news, good news. Winning, surviving, thriving. Did that feel like that after so much time had passed and you missed. Due to, like, your health, like, you missed the superficial official launch, and, like, I just would love to hear what that felt like.
Heidi Montag
It was very complex, the feelings that I felt. I was having a resurgence of my music six months before or almost a year before it was viral in China. It was like, a billion streams. I'll do. It was, like, trending in China. What attributed that they did a change. They had, like, a sword, and then it, like, changed, and then they win this costume. It was like, this huge thing. And then it started going viral all over the country. It started going viral everywhere. I had people, like, copying it and making the sound. I had to have lawyers get involved. It was like, so much so that's when Spencer and I were like, okay, should I do, like, another song? And I didn't really ever want to go back into music because I felt so kind of stupid spending all my money on my music. And I was like, what a waste. You know, like, maybe everyone was right. And I spent so much time and so much money, and I just felt like. Like, Spencer had believed in me so much, and I just kind of felt like. Kind of like I had let us down somehow. So that was really hard for me for, like, a long time, and. And I would just listen to it. I actually couldn't listen to my album for, like, years. It took me. It took me a long time. And then finally, after I had Gunner, I was like, you know, I'm just gonna start. We're really big on Snapchat. Spencer had, like. He was right under DJ Khaled. Of how many views he had. He had, like, 100 million views or something crazy. And that was when, you know, MTV came back, and they're like, hey, we want to give you your own show. And I was like, I'll just start putting the music on, and I'm gonna
Rebecca Minkoff
start putting the music on the show
Heidi Montag
or listening on my. On my Snapchat. It's like, I'm gonna work out to my music, and I'm gonna, like, reclaim this for myself, and I'm gonna stop being so bitter, and I'm gonna make money again. I'm gonna be successful again. So it took me a really long time to kind of walk through that failure that I felt. And I didn't know it actually had such a. A cult following and that it had made such an impact to so many people and so many lives and so many people loved it. I had Slater, who right now, she just had a huge breakthrough at Coachella and she's an it girl and has been. I know Slater, but she was like, superficial is like a bible to me for music. She was like, you have no idea. That really inspired me. There's a whole cult following behind it. And it made me start re thinking about it and I was like, oh, maybe, I don't know. So anyways, I decided to do one song because I'm like the rational accounting, serious one. Like, okay, I can. I'll do one song at this amount and that's it. And then we just started getting like a few songs and started picking back up. Because it's really hard in the music industry. You have to find the producers, you have to find the writers, you have to really navigate through it. It's a very locked up industry for the top people. So to be an independent artist in it is really challenging. And I think that's what we struggled with the whole time. But now they're streaming, right?
Rebecca Minkoff
Well, that's. Yeah, that's what I was going to say is now it feels like a lot of those barriers have been broken,
Heidi Montag
but the money is not there. So it's tricky because you get more recognition and you can have access and reach to your audience, but it's not the money that it used to be.
Rebecca Minkoff
Right. Because you get like one cent.
Heidi Montag
Right.
Rebecca Minkoff
Exactly.
Heidi Montag
So it's really interesting and tricky. And then the, the fires happened and I had almost half an album done and then I kind of just went into survival mode and Spencer was like, let's pump the music, you know. But we were already in music mode because the 10 year anniversary was coming out for my album. We already had that planned and released for the next month. So we were already in that mode. So Spencer was just in the mode he was already in, but now more magnified and on a platform and everybody's supporting and I've never been supported in my career. I've been nothing but criticized and hated on and picked apart. And for some reason Kelty said to me, when she's like, how come people think that you. They can treat you the way they do in the industry? She's like, you've been treated the worst I've ever seen of anyone in Hollywood. She's like, it's actually shocking. And I'm like, okay. I thought it was just me feeling that way. But now thank you for the confirmation that that is true because it would never say the things that they've said about me and allow it and pump it and anyways, so I've had to have really thick skin and thankfully I kind of naturally had that growing up and I had Spencer, so nothing really mattered to me anyways. I'm like, whatever. Yeah, it just, it was. It was really interesting. I'm trying to get the kids in school and, you know, the music's becoming number one. But I'm so detached from support or not support that it kind of. It was tricky.
Rebecca Minkoff
Everyone, sorry for the quick pause. I want to share something really exciting. So Superwoman has a brand new YouTube channel. It's still under construction, but big things are coming in 2026. You'll find past episodes, new episodes, and some bonus content I cannot wait for you to see. Just search SuperWoman Media on YouTube and hit subscribe so you don't miss a thing. Okay, back to the pod. When you say you're detached from support or not support, you're detached from that moment because you've just lost your. Your house and your trying to re acclimate your family.
Heidi Montag
Well, like, fame just isn't real to me. It comes, it goes. People are supportive one minute, they're not supportive the other. And it just was kind of like, this is not a priority to me right now. And then I saw it continuing to pick up speed and continuing to have, you know, opportunities coming from it and so many people publicly supporting us within the industry that we've never had to. And just so many people on the street. I remember this moment. She came up to me in Target. It's like, older lady. And she just was like, can I give you a hug? And I just started crying so hard. I was like, please. I was like, I really just need like a mom hug. And my mom, I hadn't seen her yet. It was just like, so fresh. And I was like, they're getting clothes for my kids, you know? And that meant the most when I would see people on the street too, and knowing that everyone really cared. So it started marinating. It started really kind of seeping in. Like, wow, this is. This is big. And this means a lot. And people care, you know, because I've never been on the receiving end.
Rebecca Minkoff
Right. You've only been getting shat on. And now suddenly people are like, giving you hugs and appreciating you, which after working so hard is so nice.
Heidi Montag
Yeah. And at a time where I really needed it, like, it Lifted us out of such a dark place that felt so distraught. And, you know, I'm looking at my kids, and I just, like, want to go home. And then my husband keeps saying, like, I should have stayed. I should have fought the fires. I'm like, you could have died. Like, our neighbor died. You know, like, people died. That was horrific. It was a lot going on at once. And I've said it before, but grief does take about a year to really seep in, they say, and it still can be so tricky and hard.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, my gosh. Of course, my. My co founder lost her home. Nicole lost her home and studio. And it's just like. It doesn't just all of a sudden, like, you. You can move on from that because it's your. It's your stable place, you know? And it's just. We did a grant for women who lost their businesses, and to hear their stories was like, heart. It's heartbreaking, you know? So I could understand why that would be way more important than you being
Heidi Montag
number one on Spotify, But I'm not downplaying that. I appreciate the number one on Spotify still.
Rebecca Minkoff
Well, it's like, a little bit of, like, the clouds clearing to, like, give you a little ray of light that you so deserve, you know? And I think a lot of women can identify with, like, I call it, like, how many more rocks do I have to push up this hill before it gets easier? Like, when is the, like, wind gonna be at my sails? And people will look at me now and be like, well, the wind is definitely at your sails. I'm like, no, no, no, it's still not, because I'm still pushing. Like, what you're seeing is my effort. And I feel like with what happened after your album and not going the way you wanted, and then you even dismissing that as a career and then having that is just like that, like, ah, yeah, something.
Heidi Montag
But then I still feel like you. Like, now I'm back pushing, you know, like, and so that's what I knew, and that's what I said to Spencer. I'm like, it's an incredible moment, and it's not gonna change our lives. I'm like, it's not gonna rebuild. Like, we financially can't rebuild our house. We had everything that we could collect after the hills because we had spent all of our money on the hills, and then we spent years collecting the money to put a town payment and to have a mortgage. So it's like, man, we're kind. You know, people are like, oh, you can just Rebuild. It's like, no, I can't. I can't, I can't. I can't afford to rebuild. I would have already started, you know, so it's tricky, and it's one of those things in life. You're like, okay, well, you know what? God, where am I supposed to be? And it's short and it's fast, and sometimes we need a little shakeup. I kept feeling like Dorothy in the wizard of Oz. I'm like, somehow I landed in Santa Barbara. Like, what am I doing here?
Rebecca Minkoff
So with that, like, newfound clarity and like, okay, fate, the number one song's not gonna fix this. Where are your goals now?
Heidi Montag
I have a new album coming out this summer, and I just want to put out good music and just see where that goes and keep working, keep putting my best foot forward. I really also want to be home a little bit more. Last year, I was gone a lot, and I tried to balance being home at least, like, three or four days a week with the kids at least in, like, the afternoons in the morning, you know, so I'm like, there with them majority of the time because I'm like, they just lost everything and moved, and now their mom and dad are both working and we're gone the most we've ever been. So I was trying really hard to take the opportunities that I was given that I knew would be like a once in a lifetime opportunity and balance that. I mean, it's really hard being a mom and working, so it's easier to be in one mode or the other.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, my gosh. I was just talking about this because I took my kids out of guilt with me to a work event. I was speaking at it, and then it was at a hotel with a water park. I was like, good. And I remember between every different thing I was attending, I had 20 minutes. I'd go to the water park, and then I'd be like, mom mode, getting drooled on and food. And then I'd go back and try and be like, business lady. And I was like, this is way worse than just clocking out.
Heidi Montag
Totally.
Rebecca Minkoff
Like, I'm here. This trip is a five day trip. And even though I feel like the highest of guilt for leaving for this, I can at least stay in one mode the whole time.
Heidi Montag
And I prep myself before the guilt. I'm like, okay, well, I'll do a little extra something because that work trip thing is hard. And you have 20 minutes, right? And then they're probably crying for you to stay, and then they don't want you to leave. And then it's like, I was better. They were all doing better when I didn't just show up for a few minutes or whatever. Correct. And then they have the meltdowns. And then you're like, I don't have time for this. I gotta go back. And now I'm late, and I have the meeting. And you're like, oh, my gosh.
Rebecca Minkoff
Okay. You know, I know it's a lot, and I know before we started recording, you were like, four nannies. And I was like, excuse me, What? And then we were talking about how, like, everyone's on a shift, everyone works part time.
Heidi Montag
Yes.
Rebecca Minkoff
And no one does it all.
Heidi Montag
So I have to have four nannies because they're all in college and they have social lives. One of my favorite nannies, she's, like, dating left. And right now, I'm like, girl, I needed you home this weekend.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, no.
Heidi Montag
Her priority is D. She's like, I'm sorry. I'm like, I know. I get it. I get it. You know, I was that age, and I get that, too. So I want just to be prepared, you know, I have a big performance coming up with headlining under Kesha and Slater, which is my biggest show I've ever done. It's one hour, so I'm so excited. I'm preparing. I've only done 30 minutes. Like, last year, I was in London, and, you know, I did all these huge shows. There were, like, 33, 000 people there, and they were all chanting like, Heidi, Heidi. Like, 33, 000 people. When I walked out, it was one of the best moments of my life. I was like, okay, I died in the fires. I definitely just died in the fires. That must have been.
Rebecca Minkoff
No, you died on the surgery table.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, totally. I've died a lot of times. You know, it must just be in, like, a whole different realm. And mention.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh, my gosh.
Heidi Montag
Dimension. But who. You know? So I'm getting ready for that. But I have three nannies booked because I'm like, if someone gets sick, if someone all of a sudden gets a date, if someone has to go do something, you know, I have to be prepared for what that is. And I have two boys, and they're wild, and they run around and they are going to split.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
Yeah.
Heidi Montag
So if someone goes this way and someone goes that way, it's just not even safe.
Rebecca Minkoff
I know.
Heidi Montag
You know, but when I have them, I got it.
Podcast Host (Rebecca Minkoff)
Yeah, of course.
Heidi Montag
I just need mom, you know? Like, I like, we got to do this. We got to do that. We have the plan. You got to be outside. They just need to be outside. No one can seem to get them outside. I'm like, outside, guys, I got great advice.
Rebecca Minkoff
When my boys. I have three boys. So I got great advice from Joanna Cole. She's an editor, and she's like, you have to run them like dogs. Like, go around the track and run. And sometimes I'll say to my 8 year old, who's like the wildest of them, I'm like, I want you to run back and forth on the lawn as fast as you can. And I just find all the ways, like, I'm timing him. Meanwhile, I'm just like, get that energy out. This is not. You think you're having fun? I'm just like, running you down.
Heidi Montag
Yes, the clock. That's the best idea. Have you seen Danny go?
Rebecca Minkoff
No.
Heidi Montag
Oh, my gosh. He does all these like, jump, jump, run, like this TV show. I'm like, yes. My choreographer was over the other day. He's like, who is this guy? I'm like, this could be you, you know, Enrique. You could be Danny go. And he's like, yeah, I kind of like it, you know. He's like, oh, my gosh. Anyways, it was so funny.
Rebecca Minkoff
I'm gonna. I'm gonna put that on. When we're stuck inside on a rainy day.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, no, it's perfect. Cause they're like jumping and running and ducking and like doing all these things.
Rebecca Minkoff
Things.
Heidi Montag
But your sanity, like, kicks in. You're like, okay, we're gonna turn off. Danny go.
Rebecca Minkoff
So one thought I had when you were talking about being underestimated is I don't know if you feel this way or if you've been able to shift it, but, like, when I. Again, I'll just reference my only blip on the. On the TV radar when that was out. And I would go to things, I would be like, do people think that I'm that person that they made me to be? Like. And I'm in a room going. Or do they know that I'm really this person, not who they tried to paint? And. And that took like a year for me to get through that of, like, now I've erased whoever that show tried to make me, and now you know who I am. And so have you gone through that where you feel like people were mocking you or not being believing in you? Now you have 30,000 fans chanting Heidi, but where do you go? And like, you walk into a room, not that you care, but just like, what's their perception of you? And how does that make you then adjust, like, how you act or think about it?
Heidi Montag
Well, right now I'm just Spencer's wife walking in, so I'm like, hello. Stream me on itunes. Yeah, don't forget breadwinner. Just in case you don't want to help him out. Buy my song. So that's been like a. A big shift, which is great, but I really feel like that stigma of Heidi to a lot of people is so gone. And the new generation actually feels the opposite about that show, which has been really interesting. And that's been nice to have, like, the support from this, because I was always like, am I the only one watching this differently? Like, you know, and I guess being in it, it just feels different. So it's nice to have a different perspective. And I just feel like for a lot of people, it was so long ago, and I'm so detached from that. But the only time it really comes up is in the industry, like, certain publicists or like, people that. That runs deep with, and I'm like, are you for real? You know, like, I sense this, like, kind of. It's like, if you want to go outside, I am fully ready and prepared because. Or, like, say it. Yeah, like, say it. You know, And I think people just know that I'm, like, fierce and honest and I'm not going to take anything from anyone. And I always have been that way. So it's always interesting, you know, kind of depending on where I am, but I don't feel like that person anymore. I guess I never really did. And so I just think I kind of always lived in my own bubble. I was very aware of it, but it never seeped into who I really was.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah, I was more asking from the perspective of I knew who I was, but I was worried they thought I was that, you know, in an industry setting, like, oh, does she not want to work with me because she thinks I'm a boring weirdo? Like, whatever it was that the label they gave me.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, it still happens to me in the industry.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah.
Heidi Montag
But it's actually been really nice with this younger generation too. And, like, in the music industry, it's such a woman, supportive woman industry, which is shocking. You would think everyone's so competitive, but I went to Billboard Women in Music last year and this year, and it was the best I've ever felt in this industry. And, you know, I met, like, Zara Larson this year, and she was so unbelievably sweet and cute and kind of. And it seems like the biggest superstars are always the nicest. So that. That's really great being in the music industry, because I feel really supported and included, and it's such an honor to be amongst that. I met Rihanna so many years ago, and she jumped off her golf cart, ran up to me backstage, and said, like, you're so beautiful. Gave me a hug. I was like, oh, my gosh. That made my life. So it is these women in the industry that have made me feel like a superwoman.
Rebecca Minkoff
You are one. Yeah.
Heidi Montag
Thank you.
Rebecca Minkoff
You and the Laguna beach crew, like, you were the blueprint for influencer, for fame with a real person. Having known and come through that cycle, what have you taken from that that continues to work now? Or what have you had to change, knowing that everyone's in the game? And obviously you're not an influencer. You're a legitimate music artist, and amongst everything else, you do. But how has that changed how you go about your career?
Heidi Montag
It's such a different time, and social media changed everything. And now these influencers have to be editors, influencers, producers, personalities. Like, there's a lot of work. Like, Alex Earle is incredible. I don't even know how she exists as a human.
Rebecca Minkoff
I don't either. I don't know the peptides.
Heidi Montag
Okay, girl, get those peptides. Yeah. It's incredible you named the show. Yeah, I know. I'm doing 10 peptides, for sure. I'm like, I need to ramp it up here. But it's different. You know, I had some of the opportunities then, but not like I could have had. You know, we were on a show where there was a narrator, and it just was really different. And so I had, like, a lot of club appearances, and that was really fun. And I don't feel like those really exist anymore, you know, and with the brands, it had to be really written off to be on tv. Like, I'm sure they had to get a check. There was a lot more to go through. So now you can promote a lot of different things. And I also just love people knowing products and things I like, you know, because I've spent a lot of time and money to have products at work. So when anyone ever asks or anything like that, I love to share. But with the music, I've really refocused on that and less of influencing. Like, I was. I was doing Snapchat every day, I think, for seven years. And finally after the fires, I was like, I don't have the capacity to do this anymore. And I haven't been back as much, you know, like, I'll do Some, but it's nice to just kind of come out of all that for a minute.
Rebecca Minkoff
No, it's, it's a never ending game. And like I had this weird thing where I was at, at an event, no pictures please. And then I was like, wait, you know, you get so used to like, if I don't document this, then am I going to get invited to the next thing? And it's so fucked up. It's such like a mind fuck to be like, well, does it matter that I'm even here if I don't post about it? It's really gets to you especially as, like, as a founder, I have to become a media entity. And you know, you have to be like, people don't just want to hear your music. They want to be like, what toothpaste did she use? And like what's in her hair? And like, yeah, it's a lot.
Heidi Montag
It is, it's, it's super interesting. But I'm like, if I'm spending money on hair, makeup and an outfit, there's going to be a photo. Because for myself and my social media or, or whatever, you know. But I do put less meals on social media and stuff. I'm like, maybe nobody cares what I'm eating. I don't know.
Rebecca Minkoff
Yeah, no, I think I'm done with the meals too. Is there anything I didn't ask you that you wanted to share?
Heidi Montag
You know, I just think that in this world women have a lot of pressure and I think that there's a lot of different things that we want to handle and want to do and we want to say yes to everything and we want to be everything for everyone. And I think sometimes it's really important to just take a step back and say no to a few things and just like rebalance yourself and what's serving you and the people in your life and what kind of life do you want to live? So we're living such a fast paced life on social media and scrolling like it's important to just kind of pause and get off for a minute and put it down and take some deep breaths. And that's what I'm working on is breathing. Like I haven't breathed all day, you know?
Rebecca Minkoff
I know.
Heidi Montag
So I, I just think it's important to really love yourself and to treat yourself well. And I just hope that people remember to do that, you know, because we're so caught up in so many things. But it's important to like check in and make sure, you know, you're doing well and there's a balance, you know, Like, I saw someone doing so much self care the other day, I was like, maybe a little too much self care.
Rebecca Minkoff
Oh my God, I hate. Watch it.
Heidi Montag
Oh my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
Rebecca Minkoff
When they do the shedding and then the self care after the shedding, I hate. Watch that so hard. And I'm just like, I hate you,
Heidi Montag
I hate you, I hate you.
Rebecca Minkoff
But I won't make a comment. I won't leave a mean comment. I just secretly hate them. Maybe my comparison to what you said is a little bit more morbid, but, like, you see all these people who had it all who, like, reach old age, they die. Everyone's like, oh, so sad. And then they go about their life. I'm like, no one remembers them. No one cares. No one's thinking about them. So if you're living your life for other people or what they think of you, like, you're wasting so much time. And I try and remind myself of that. Like, is this a life you want? What else do you want? What else do you want to achieve for you and your family? Not for anyone else's. Like, oh, yay, she did a good job.
Heidi Montag
Like, my number one goal is I want to be an incredible wife and I want to be an amazing mom and I want my kids to grow up happy and I want to stay married. So those are like my two main goals in life, you know, want my husband to be super happy and have a great marriage. You know, we've been together for 20 years.
Rebecca Minkoff
That's amazing. Especially in our industries.
Heidi Montag
Oh, seriously? Yeah, yeah, you. Everyone thought they were pushing us apart, but they were just pushing us closer together.
Rebecca Minkoff
Who knew?
Heidi Montag
Who knew?
Rebecca Minkoff
We did. So when does the album come out and where can people listen to it?
Heidi Montag
You can download it on itunes and Spotify, YouTube, anywhere that you can listen to it. And then I have my huge performance that I'm Getting ready for. July 18th. Neon skies in Edmonton, Canada.
Rebecca Minkoff
Wow.
Heidi Montag
Yeah. So I'm really excited.
Rebecca Minkoff
And so how can people. Because Spotify play, you know, pays $0.01 per play or whatever that is. How can people support you? But with their.
Heidi Montag
With their money, it is great to buy the album on itunes. That really makes such a big difference. The vinyls. Buying the vinyls is a big deal.
Rebecca Minkoff
Vinyl's coming back too.
Heidi Montag
Yeah, people love the vinyls. It's interesting. I didn't realize, you know, the, like, we talked about the cult following that I have, and these people were waiting for the vinyls for like 15 years. And so they sold out. So quick, which I was really excited about. Yeah. So that's great. Any brands? I'm available.
Rebecca Minkoff
She's here.
Heidi Montag
I'm here. Yeah, yeah.
Rebecca Minkoff

Episode: “Heidi Montag on Fame, Failure, and Finally Being Understood”
Date: June 18, 2026
This episode features Heidi Montag—pop musician, mother of two, and former reality TV star—as she candidly discusses her career journey, resilience in the face of harsh public scrutiny, the emotional toll of being underestimated, overcoming failure, and finding renewed purpose. Host Rebecca Minkoff guides the conversation with empathy and humor, drawing connections to her own career and the broader experience of women navigating ambition, reinvention, and online criticism.
Heidi on the music industry’s hardness:
“To be an independent artist in it is really challenging. I think that’s what we struggled with the whole time. But now they’re streaming, right?...But the money is not there.” (25:39–25:54)
On internet bullying:
“I’ve never said a negative comment about anyone online, ever. I would never even conceptualize leaving a negative comment. Like, who are these people? That’s crazy.” (20:58)
A tender moment of support from the public:
“She came up to me in Target…can I give you a hug? And I just started crying so hard…I really just need like a mom hug.” (28:32)
On family and real priorities:
“My number one goal is I want to be an incredible wife and I want to be an amazing mom, and I want my kids to grow up happy and I want to stay married.” (44:36)
Rebecca’s realism on success:
“How many more rocks do I have to push up this hill before it gets easier?” (30:14)
Heidi on authenticity:
“Be honest and true and good to yourself and don’t let other people…project their unhappiness on you.” (20:34)
Heidi’s story is a candid look at surviving intense public scrutiny, the cyclical nature of fame, and the ongoing pressures faced by ambitious women. Listeners will find her journey deeply relatable, especially her advice on authenticity, refusing to live for the approval of others, and embracing both joy and difficulty as part of the process. The episode’s tone is honest, irreverent, supportive, and ultimately hopeful.
Heidi’s new album releases this summer and is available on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, and as a (very in-demand) vinyl.
Catch her live at Neon Skies in Edmonton, Canada, on July 18th.
