The WWDC keynote was today and I promised you all the headlines, but you're gonna have to help me figure out
Tech News Co-Host
what the headlines even were.

Tech News Host
so the WWDC keynote just finished
Tech News Co-Host
and as per usual, I'm going to
Tech News Host
run it down in roughly chronological order
Tech News Co-Host
so you don't have to watch the video yourself. Tim Cook kicked things off without very
Tech News Host
much fanfare, given that this is his
Tech News Co-Host
last WWDC as CEO.
Tech News Host
Then he handed the baton to Craig Federighi, who framed this year's WWDC around
Tech News Co-Host
three things making the software faster and
Tech News Host
smoother, a pile of new safety tools
Tech News Co-Host
for kids and families, and the one everybody actually tuned in for. A so called big leap forward for Apple Intelligence, including a brand new Siri. We'll get to that, but let me get some of the smaller stuff off the table first.
Tech News Host
The annual macOS naming bit returned and
Tech News Co-Host
we'll cut through that. It's called macOS Golden Gate. On the design front, they're quietly walking back some of last year's Liquid Glass stuff. There's now a slider in Settings to dial Liquid Glass back anywhere from ultra clear to fully tinted. And in terms of speed, Apple's throwing out the usual percentages. Apps launch up to 30% faster. The new Photos app loads up to 70% faster, drops up to 80% faster between various devices.
Tech News Host
The genuinely nice one is that they
Tech News Co-Host
reworked the CPU scheduler and pushed it all the way back to the iPhone 11. So older phones should feel faster, snappier. And yes, I forgot to confirm that this is iOS27, but you knew that, and it's supporting the same phones that iOS 26 did.
Tech News Host
They also rebuilt the search index behind
Tech News Co-Host
Spotlight, Photos and Mail.
Tech News Host
So the thing you're looking for in
Tech News Co-Host
theory, actually shows up when you search search for it. At least that's what they promise.
Tech News Host
On the trust and safety side, which
Tech News Co-Host
they made an unusually big deal of this year, more so than even they
Tech News Host
normally do, Apple's leaning hard into parental controls.
Tech News Co-Host
Child accounts now come with age based protections. A new ask to browse feature so kids can have to get their parents permission before visiting new websites, not just new apps.
Tech News Host
There's also content filtering that now blocks
Tech News Co-Host
gore and violence and a redesigned screen time with time built on pediatric medical guidance.
Tech News Host
And running underneath all of it, as
Tech News Co-Host
always, is the privacy drumbeat. Okay, then, the main event, Apple Intelligence. And the headline here is that as rumored, Apple is getting into bed with Google. The next generation of Apple foundation models. The actual brains behind this new flavor of Apple intelligence were built on what Apple is calling a deep collaboration with Google, using the technology behind Google's Gemini models.
Tech News Host
Now, they're quick to add that these
Tech News Co-Host
models, again, privacy, run on Apple's own hardware, on device and on their private cloud compute servers. So they're framing them as Apple's models just built on a Gemini foundation.
Tech News Host
So basically, two years later, after Apple Intelligence largely landed with a thud, Apple
Tech News Co-Host
went and got help from Google to deliver this. So what is this? What does the new architecture actually do?
Tech News Host
Apple built a server model and an on device model, plus a second beefier
Tech News Co-Host
on device model for their most powerful Apple silicon. And that one handles speech, more accurate dictation, and the expressive new voices.
Tech News Host
There's a new system orchestrator, coordinating everything between the models with the capabilities, coming
Tech News Co-Host
down to four things.
Tech News Host
Personal context, understanding, where it digs into
Tech News Co-Host
your stuff using Spotlight's semantic index, World knowledge, where it can go out to the web for current information.
Tech News Host
App actions, where it reaches into your
Tech News Co-Host
apps and actually does things inside of them, and on screen awareness, where it knows what you're looking at on your screen. All of it, Apple insists again runs
Tech News Host
on device or on that private cloud compute.
Tech News Co-Host
So your data isn't stored and it isn't accessible, not even to Apple.
Tech News Host
Which brings us to how Siri fits
Tech News Co-Host
into all of this. They branded Siri the new Siri Siri AI. In one demo, they asked when, say, the Suki Waterhouse show is in San Francisco, and Siri pulled it from current web knowledge.
Tech News Host
Then they said, remind me to sign up when the lottery opens.
Tech News Co-Host
And it just did it by, I guess, creating a calendar appointment or a reminder or something.
Tech News Host
In another demo, they showed on screen awareness. There's a photo on the screen and
Tech News Co-Host
they ask, where is this? And Ciri identifies the beach where this is. And then they ask, where's Jeff's new place? And Siri digs the address to Jeff's new place out of a text message that the user apparently never saved, but still routed them there with a stop along the way. So finally, we have now the promise of pulling personal context out of your messages and stuff on your phone and acting on it. The exact thing that got delayed last year. There was a photos demo too.
Tech News Host
Show me photos from Shasta last weekend.
Tech News Co-Host
Add just the ones with Bryce, Madison and Quinn to our shared album, and Siri does it without ever opening the photos app. And now Siri is more conversational, more back and forth, kind of like, you know, an AI chat app should be.
Tech News Host
Another demo had someone planning a World cup watch party. They asked for the schedule for the
Tech News Co-Host
World cup, and then they go deeper and ask for iconic dishes from, say, Brazil and Morocco. Siri comes back with answers and images. Then they say, what was that dessert Maria mentioned recently? Siri finds it buried in a message and pulls the whole thing together into a custom menu and fires it off to the group chat on the Mac. Siri's now baked right into Spotlight so you can ask it questions, have it compare a stack of differently formatted files, say, spit out a clean table, even draft an email to a contractor from scratch. And it carries over to iPad, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, where you literally just look at the Siri Orb and start talking to it. No, hey, Siri required.
Tech News Host
There's also a dedicated Siri app now,
Tech News Co-Host
with your conversational history synced privately across all your devices, so you can start on your phone and finish on your Mac and do stuff on your watch.
Tech News Host
That stuff with the Mac was actually
Tech News Co-Host
the part that was the most interesting to me. The ability to AI style query about files on my computer and take actions on that. That's sort of what I love using the various AI models for when they allow you to plug stuff in.
Tech News Host
The new Siri voices are more expressive. Apple says you can tune Siri's expressiveness
Tech News Co-Host
and pace to your liking. Dictation gets what they are claiming is a real accuracy bump and all of it extends to CarPlay and AirPods.
Tech News Host
Maybe the most impressive thing on your
Tech News Co-Host
phone was the visual intelligence, which again
Tech News Host
is Siri using your camera and your
Tech News Co-Host
screen so it's seeing what you're doing and tells you what you see or what it sees you see.
Tech News Host
On the iPhone, there's a new Siri mode right in the camera app.
Tech News Co-Host
So you tap the shutter and Siri sees what you see. Point it at a plate of food, get nutrition info, point it at a restaurant bill, tap what you ordered and split the bill with Apple Cash on
Tech News Host
the Mac, it's a keyboard shortcut on
Tech News Co-Host
Vision Pro you just again look at Siri, they ask whether a backpack works as carry on for a flight to Iceland and whether their hiking boots will fit inside it. And Siri answers using both world knowledge and personal context.
Tech News Host
And the writing tools are now everywhere you type.
Tech News Co-Host
Siri can draft from a description, mimic how you normally talk to a specific person, give you feedback on what you wrote, and there's automatic proofreading system wide even in third party apps.
Tech News Host
Now everything I just described when is it shipping Developers can play around with
Tech News Co-Host
all this today, but for the rest
Tech News Host
of us, Siri AI launches in beta
Tech News Co-Host
later this year, so even after all
Tech News Host
of this time we still don't have
Tech News Co-Host
a firm launch date for all of us. It's also English only to start and Siri AI will not be available in the EU at launch on iPhone and iPad. Apple says it's still working on a privacy and security path under gdpr. And in China, the new Apple Intelligence features are on hold while they clear whatever hurdles they have to jump over there.
Tech News Host
So a meaningful chunk of Apple's user
Tech News Co-Host
base is not getting any of this on day one.
Tech News Host
Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence is now threaded through all the apps.
Tech News Co-Host
Safari can auto organize your tabs into topics and monitor a page for changes so you don't have to manually refresh passwords can agentically go log in to your accounts and swap weekly passwords out for strong ones.
Tech News Host
Messages, mail and calendar all get smart
Tech News Co-Host
suggestions and natural language event creation.
Tech News Host
The phone app surfaces your confirmation codes
Tech News Co-Host
if, say you're calling an airline.
Tech News Host
Shortcuts now lets you build an automation
Tech News Co-Host
by just describing what you want in plain English.
Tech News Host
Image Playground got rebuilt with new models
Tech News Co-Host
that can do photorealistic images, and the one photos feature that genuinely impressed me a little bit was spatial reframing, which
Tech News Host
basically lets you reposition the camera after the fact from a different pov like
Tech News Co-Host
you're shifting your vantage point in a shot that you already took with Generative AI and it works on basically any photo in your library, even old ones.
Tech News Host
Tim Cook closed everything out again, not
Tech News Co-Host
with any great fanfare of overly intense farewell to the troop style messages. One thing that I did miss either live or it just petered out. Now Apple says its most powerful on device AI model. The most powerful one again used on Device requires an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone
Tech News Host
Air, iPad with M4 or later, a Mac with M3 or later. All of those will need more than
Tech News Co-Host
12 gigabytes of RAM.
Tech News Host
So again, the most powerful model will
Tech News Co-Host
still not work apparently on my $6,000 m1mac studio let me end by asking you this. What did I just tell you they announced? What were the big takeaways? Can you even think of one? Did anything I just described give you
Tech News Host
a gee whiz moment?
Tech News Co-Host
I can't think of one. And unless I'm very wrong about this,
Tech News Host
after a two year delay, I think Apple just announced the AI features that
Tech News Co-Host
have been table stakes on a lot of Android phones for at least three years now.
Tech News Host
Seriously, even if they didn't talk about
Tech News Co-Host
AI all the time in this, just on a pure feature by feature level, this is what's new this year in
Tech News Host
iOS kind of thing. It was like a boring keynote.
Tech News Co-Host
I'll wait to read all of the analyses and hot takes tomorrow, but if
Tech News Host
anyone has a more generous take than
Tech News Co-Host
what I just gave on today, I'd be very surprised.

Tech News Co-Host
from Elon Quoting Bloomberg Alphabet's Google has
Tech News Host
agreed to pay Elon Musk's SpaceX $920 million a month for computing power as
Tech News Co-Host
part of a cloud services deal that runs through mid-2029, its second such agreement with an AI competitor in a matter of weeks. Google will pay SpaceX the monthly fee from October this year through June of 2029, SpaceX said in the.
Tech News Host
That amounts to about $30 billion through the time of the agreement. If SpaceX fails to deliver access to Nvidia chips as part of the deal by September 30, Google has the right to terminate the contract with a one
Tech News Co-Host
month grace period, the filing shows. A Google Cloud spokesperson said the deal
Tech News Host
would help the company meet demand for its AI services.
Tech News Co-Host
In its most recent earnings report, Alphabet
Tech News Host
said Google Cloud's backlog, the measure of
Tech News Co-Host
contracted work that hasn't been recorded as
Tech News Host
revenue yet, nearly doubled from the prior
Tech News Co-Host
quarter to More than a $460 billion
Tech News Host
this is a short term, timely agreement to ensure we have bridge capacity to meet surging customer demand for our agent
Tech News Co-Host
platform Gemini Enterprise, which has been higher than even we expected, the Google spokesperson said in a statement.
Tech News Host
SpaceX previously signed a similar agreement with Anthropic.
Tech News Co-Host
The Musk led company through its XAI
Tech News Host
subsidiary, has been looking to shore up revenue and transform its AI business into a compute infrastructure provider, the key business the company has been touting as part
Tech News Co-Host
of its initial public offering.
Tech News Host
President Trump said over the weekend that he is weighing proposals for the US Government to take and hold equity stakes
Tech News Co-Host
in the leading AI labs and will soon discuss this idea with their various executives. Quoting Bloomberg President Donald Trump expressed interest
Tech News Host
in the US Government holding equity stakes in the leading artificial intelligence developers, saying that he planned to discuss the idea of a partnership with AI company executives
Tech News Co-Host
as soon as next week.
Tech News Host
There are concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner with the companies, trump said Friday when asked
Tech News Co-Host
about the idea by reporters aboard Air Force One.
Tech News Host
There's something very interesting about it where it almost becomes a partnership with the American public and we'll look into that. Trump said he had already spoken to the companies about the idea, though he
Tech News Co-Host
offered no specifics on those conversations.
Tech News Host
In his remarks, he addressed news reports that the administration would put the stock into a government run wealth fund that would redistribute some of the financial windfall
Tech News Co-Host
to the public and signaled his openness to that idea.
Tech News Host
We're talking about it where the American people can benefit from the success of AI, he said.
Tech News Co-Host
It would be a beautiful thing and it would make them very rich.
Tech News Host
Yeah, specifically they're talking to OpenAI about doing this and apparently that was all
Tech News Co-Host
originally Sam Altman's idea, Quoting cnbc the
Tech News Host
discussions have been in progress for more than a year as Altman first shared the idea with the Trump administration in 2020, according to a source familiar with
Tech News Co-Host
the matter, who asked not to be named because the details are confidential.
Tech News Host
As part of the potential agreement, OpenAI could donate equity to the US government
Tech News Co-Host
to seed something like the Public Wealth
Tech News Host
Fund that the company outlined in its April policy proposal, the person said.
Tech News Co-Host
OpenAI said the fund could invest in
Tech News Host
diversified long term assets and would enable citizens to participate in the upside of AI growth, possibly by receiving the fund's
Tech News Co-Host
returns directly, according to the proposal. End quote.
Tech News Host
And finally today we might have another
Tech News Co-Host
big demo day coming soon from OpenAI as they seem to be considering going down the whole super app route. Quoting the ft, the company intends to
Tech News Host
transform its Chatbot into a super app that combines coding tools and AI agents,
Tech News Co-Host
adding products that executives believe will generate more revenue. The changes are part of a broader reorganization at OpenAI as the San Francisco
Tech News Host
based company shifts resources into trying to win lucrative business customers and compete more
Tech News Co-Host
fiercely with rival Anthropic, according to more than a dozen current and former employees.
Tech News Host
The changes, which will give greater prominence and resources to OpenAI's coding product Codex,
Tech News Co-Host
reflect a growing conviction within the company
Tech News Host
that the future of AI lies not in chatbots that answer questions, but in
Tech News Co-Host
agents that perform tasks for users. Chat is dead, said one senior OpenAI employee. OpenAI executives increasingly view ChatGPT, which has
Tech News Host
attracted nearly 1 billion users since its launch, as a gateway to introduce users to higher value products.
Tech News Co-Host
The majority of consumers use the Chatbot for free.
Tech News Host
The company is embarking on the changes amid a belief that the advent of agents, which can perform multiple tasks for
Tech News Co-Host
users from booking travel to organizing calendars, will be a more valuable product than the Chatbot at the same time, products such as Codex are able to write code and create software based on simple instructions from users.
Tech News Host
The overhaul, which is set to begin rolling out in coming weeks, will initially appear as changes to ChatGPT's website and mobile apps apps, encouraging customers towards coding,
Tech News Co-Host
image generation and apps from external partners.
Tech News Host
The majority of Codex users pay for the service, according to people familiar with the matter.
Tech News Co-Host
While the 2 million businesses that use OpenAI's products account for roughly 40% of its revenue, the company anticipates this will rise to 50% by the end of the year. OpenAI's Codex product has increased its user
Tech News Host
base sixfold, to more than 5 million
Tech News Co-Host
weekly active users since the launch of a desktop application in February. Its launch has intensified competition with Anthropic,
Tech News Host
who's Claude code product has emerged as
Tech News Co-Host
one of the startup's fastest growing businesses. Approximately a year ago, OpenAI strategy was
Tech News Host
swing for the fences.
Tech News Co-Host
Where Anthropic strategy is make money first, said Jenny Zhao, partner at Leonis Capital and former researcher at OpenAI.
Tech News Host
Now the two are converging because both of them are trying to aim for
Tech News Co-Host
an ipo, and investors care more about money than dreams. End quote. Getting this out as soon as possible. Talk to you tomorrow.
