Competitive depth, having a. The A team to go the distance. It helps when you've got a big ten schedule, but when you got a big boy schedule like the sec, you're going to need some depth, you're going to need some bodies, and I feel like that AD is. Is finally starting to come to fruition. So we've got some deep, talented teams in the SEC this year, so I believe we're making a run, Mike.

They'll do better than that. But it's not crazy to sit here and for that to happen.

I'm telling you. At first I didn't, I was like, you're crazy. Like the earth is flat. But now I'm like, you're onto something. But I listened to the argument, even though I didn't agree with it and it made sense. There's no argument out there that makes sense that the Big Ten has it tougher than the SEC zero. You're talking three. I could. There are probably legitimately, Mike, six teams in this conference that could win a national title. I, I, I, I firmly believe that.

champion here over here in the front. Tell me about the, the additions to your coaching staff. So much SEC knowledge with Will Muschamp and Coach Jalook and, and Mark Stoops. Now how intentional was that and what have you seen from heading those to

[Mike]

those guys to the staff?

Yeah, you know, I think each hire was different in different timings. You know, obviously, you know, we made a decision to make a couple changes on staff and you know, we kind of targeted Coach Jaluc. Felt like his ties in New Orleans and known him from when his time as a high school head coach at Edna Car and just the energy and the passion, the way he coached the game, we felt like we needed that on offense and obviously his history at LSU and at Florida, that was helpful. But also his time in Texas was helpful. So that was, that was one piece of it. Then Coach Muschamp was kind of the next piece. And you know, we felt like we wanted to get back to playing a style of defense that, that I was accustomed to, an aggressive, in your face, tighter coverage kind of approach to things. It doesn't hurt that Will Muschamp's been a head coach in this league at two different stops at Florida and South Carolina and had previously been the defensive coordinator at Texas. He knew this place, he knew this league. We philosophically see eye to eye on so many things and the last piece for me, why that was important. I felt like I needed to get back to spending more time with the offense, especially from a game planning perspective and entrusting that having a guy who's been a head coach in this league that could almost be the head coach of the defense, you know, during, during the week as we were game prepping that I could get back to my focus and my energy with the offense and so far, so good. It's been, it's been great when it comes to Coach Stoops. Hey, I learned this a while back with Coach Saban you know, there's a lot of really good coaches that sometimes are out of work for a minute, and when you can, when you can compile a little more knowledge, a little more intel, another, another way of looking at things. The opportunity that we had to not only bring in Coach Stoops, but Billy Gonzalez from Florida, who was the interim head coach, is now with us as an assistant receiver. Coach Steve Casula from Michigan, he, he was calling plays against us in the Citrus bowl and then is on board with us. So we think that we've, we've assembled a really good staff, a highly competitive staff, a very bright staff, one that's got a wealth of experience, but are really good teachers and really good connectors with our players. I'll say that about all these guys. Coach Jaluk, Coach Musham, it's great having Coach Gideon back as well. Their ability to connect to our players is a little bit of the secret sauce. And, and that's something. We're very fortunate to have all those guys on board with us.

[Mike]

Okay, Shane. So he's hiring Stoops head coach, Kentucky. Will Muschamp, multi multiple time head coach. You heard him say Billy. I didn't even know Billy Gonzalez. So he was the interim last year at Florida. How many damn coaches you need? And again, I counted analyst or senior offensive analysts or no senior analysts listed on their website is like 16.

And none of those guys he just mentioned are even counted there. So I just don't understand this whole, this whole off season talking point of, well, we got much champion there, so I can focus on the offense, you know, like I needed a head coach of the defense. Well, now you got multiple head coaches over there.

What, what the hell were you doing? It's almost like he's taking credit for them being good on defense the last couple years and the offense sucking and, and that's. That's his excuse. I, I don't, I don't buy it.

Well, it's a good, I mean, it's something I would say if it were me. It's something you would say, I would imagine. It's like, hey, now I can focus on what I'm good at. And you know, when you, you're kind of torn there, I. Here's the thing with Muschamp.

[Mike]

But wouldn't that only make sense if, like, the defense was struggling and you had to help them out all the time? Well, defense was carrying the damn team and the offense was Mississippi State, Kentucky. I mean, they were, I don't. They were struggling against These shitty teams.

[Shane]

I'm not saying it's just the defense played great, especially last year at times. So I'm not, I'm not saying that. But Muschat brings a separate element, right? This is a guy that's been around national titles. This is a guy that has been a head coach at multiple spots. Knows exact, exactly what's expected. I mean, you don't need to teach him up, you don't need to coach him up what you want. He knows how high the standards are. I mean, work for Kirby Smart. That's, that's exactly where Sark is wanting to be or where he is. And so I, I, I, I think that's more of it. It's like I can completely let go of the defense and just focus on where we sucked at last year. And that was offensive side the ball.

Oh, he worked for, they both worked for saving. So they got that connection too. You know what?

Tyler Shaw with kbtx. At the end of the Lone Star showdown last year, there was a video that played on the video board. It was kind of quote of Mike Elko saying this is the, you know, flagship program of the state and kind of a troll job way.

What were your thoughts? I was not happy about it.

What, what have you seen from this rivalry so far?

[Coach Elko]

These. A hell of a rivalry. I'm fortunate to be part of it. I'm humbled, I'm honored. The great players, the great teams, the great coaches who have been part of this game. I respect it and I respect the competition. In the last two years, those have been great games that have mattered. Two years ago, the winner of that game goes to the SEC championship. Last year, we were fighting for what we felt like was our playoff lives. They were an undefeated team, so there were some great moments, but emotions run high in those games. We had a team that was trying to think about going to plant the flag two years ago, and I wouldn't let that happen. I respect the game of football, and I respect college football, and I respect the football gods, and there's a way to go about our business, and there's a way not. And so rivalries are great, but we got to be able to fight the emotions that come with the rivalry. And I think that's why we've had success in some of our rivalry games, whether it's A and M or OU or Arkansas. So I think we do a good job of managing our emotions. And so. But that's. That's a. That's a real challenge when you get into games like that.

[Mike]

I didn't like it. I didn't like it.

[Shane]

He's fun at parties, right? I think. I think, though, I figured it out, because halfway through that rant, I heard a statement that he said, I don't want to upset the football gods and football coaches and players. You know, there's a lot of superstition that. That floats around, you know what I'm saying? And. And karma is a thing, and. And, you know, the old ying and yang. I. I would imagine Sark's got a little OCD to him here. If you. If you did a deep dive, and. And that's what I think's happening here is it's not that he doesn't like the trash talk. He just doesn't want to upset the football gods, like he said.

Well, in. In his defense, Coach Oko yesterday was. He was asked about the series and all that, and he basically said the same thing.

He's a big Sark fan, and he knows it's weird that, like, they like each other and they're. They respect each other. And again, I don't think Coach Elko is. I mean, he's the coach at A and M. He's got to say they're the best. You know, Sark said Texas. He's got to say they're the best. I don't think either one is trying to, like, undermine each other. They're just. They're saying what they got to say at their current schools. You know what?

Right. That's Exactly. I mean, that's what we're doing, so. But I. I love the talking. I love planting the flags. I like making the rivalries better because of the podium. So I. I disagree with this message and I hope they keep. Keep it coming.

Do I think that he's the best defensive coordinator in the country? Absolutely not. But what he brings is energy to that side of the football, which I think they. They miss sometimes. And they have the ability to play that tenacious defense, to be an ugly, ugly. Nobody wants to play top defense. And Muschamp, he's going to get every drop of it.

You know, one thing he said also was very interesting. Shane. Someone asked him about one of the backup quarterbacks, K.J. lacy.

So, hell, the future after old Bryce, or, excuse me, after Arch, is looking pretty good if. If KJ Lacey's anything like Bryce Young. And then they just signed, I believe, number one quarterback in the country, Raja Bell's son. So, yeah, we'll see If. If they go to the Portal, which I'm. I have no clue. I'm not saying they will, but if they go to the Portal, that probably tells you they don't believe either one of those guys is ready. So, you know, actions speak louder than words. But if. If Texas doesn't go to the Portal.

It probably tells you that they got two hell of a. They may be inexperienced, but two talented quarterbacks.

I think, Mike, I think it's a shift. You're going to start seeing some of these guys wait, because some of these quarterbacks get thrown in and they got to see it. There's proof. Right? Look at Bo Nicks prime example thrown into the fire, drowned out there in Auburn, goes up flourishes in Oregon, gets a, you know, a career in the NFL. So I, I think there's been a lot of examples of when you come in and we're paying you all this money, we're expecting it immediately and sometimes that it that backfires tremendously. So I wouldn't be surprised if you can keep some of these boys in. In. That's the big one. Them not leaving. Right. Getting them to stay in Texas.

I think they come, they see what we're doing. And I think for recruits and recruits, parents, I don't think any of them

And you know, honestly, media days, there's, there's a time and place to learn depth charts, to learn coachings, and, you know, it's just, I feel like when I'm watching media days, even before I was a part of it, it was just to try to figure out, are we going to be good or not, right? Are we gonna, are we taking a step forward or are we gonna struggle this season, you know, and, and maybe who else is going to emerge in this conference? And I'm not going to find out because of a tight end question. So, no, I, I totally agree with you there. But it's also fear because, you know, there's always that thing because it's, it's, it's a privilege, Mike. I mean, we worked really hard to get in the spot to, to attend these media days and be a part of this and ask, being the, the spot to ask these questions, but it can be taken away just like that. And there's a couple of people that we talked to. It's their first meeting days. They're. They're wet behind the ears. They're having, they're having a hell of a time. There's no way in hell they're going to ask a question like that because they want to come back next year.

Yeah, I, I feel like it's, maybe it's a little broken on how they do it, but the part that I don't like about the whole car wash deal is the big companies that get involved it. You know, CBS can schedule an interview with Caleb DeBoer anytime they want. You know, ESPN can schedule an appointment with Sarkeesian in his back backyard anytime they want. Right. I mean, so why are they a part? And nothing against? I love ESPN person. I love them. I think they're great. And there's There's a lot of good dudes and women that are. That are working hard in that industry and. But I just feel like Media Days needs to be more about the radio row. I, I. Do you remember our boy Mason? Derek Mason Vanderbilt. You know, one thing that I liked about Derek Mason is he went to every single booth. You know, he made sure, even though Vanderbilt wasn't being talked about, he made sure that everybody have an opportunity to hear what he had to say.

Yeah, no, I think that's an excellent point, Shane. And the only thing I'd add to that, because you. You kind of did make me think of something. Like, if you're a local guy and you. It doesn't matter. It applies to all these teams. If you're a local Georgia guy, you got to be careful pushing Kirby.

Because they. They could be like, you know, you're not welcome here anymore. You know, and then how do you do your job if you're a. You're a Texas guy and you push Sark. Hey, what the. What. What. You don't like to point to another program, but as a new coach, do you go to your guys? Look what Signetti did at Indiana, the worst college football program ever and in two years they win the national championship. Do you go, hey, just dream big?

[Coach Silverfield]

Yeah, well here's. I know a lot of donors appointed to that and said, why don't you just go and flip the program? We expect a national championship in two years. That's great. Listen, a lot of credit to what they've done at Indiana and Coach Signetti is obviously one of the top of the list of coaches. So I give them a lot of credit with what they've done. I think more than anything, rather than point out that example to our players because it's a whole new roster and I continue to harp on like we got guys that have come from all different backgrounds, right? Whether it's fcs, other SEC schools, ACC schools are coming, part transfers from Memphis and its staff. So we sit there and we don't look at what occurred in the past at Arkansas, but how do we change the narrative moving forward? And I think it's just a buy in and belief. And so from the very day I got there is how do we get as many people to buy in to the way we're going to do things. And I hope over time, right, you continue, maybe you get 80% buy in and then the next year it's 90. But I think we've got been fortunate to have quite a bit of buy in. I think then we're going to look up and say, okay, man, this program, as I said earlier, is moving in the right direction and couldn't be pleased with that. It's easy to point out other examples or certain things that we can show and teach off of those, but man, to replicate that would be something special.

[Mike]

Just be the next Indiana. Come on. Have you thought about that yet?

[Shane]

Yeah, every day, right? This is the one. Listen, I know, Mike, listen, I try to be positive about Arkansas every time I see him because I do love this football team and I feel like they need, they need something, man. They need some happiness in their life. And are we going to win a national title this year? No, next year probably not, but you can definitely build a national Title contender by having success early in your career. Right. So, you know, he did. Signetti didn't just go to Indiana and start winning national titles. Right. He built something. It took a while. He got it there. Same thing's got to happen here in Arkansas. Lay the foundation, get some momentum late in the end of season. And then those boosters that he was talking about, guess what? That check gets a little bit bigger next year when you need the nil portal.

At Arkansas or literally anywhere where a team's been struggling, it's gotta be so hard to hit up the big money people and be like, hey, I know we went 2 and 10 last year.

And you probably paid the quarterback and the running back and, you know that really good safety we had. Hey, how about you double it this, you know. No, how about you go with some damn games? Yeah. And then I'll pony up. I mean, you, you've got to get people to believe. And, you know, that's a tough spot to be in, but I, I think that's a spot. Mississippi State and Arkansas and a lot of these teams are probably in around the country.

But, you know, if that's not his, you know, if he went coacho and ripped his shirt off, yeah, that's fine if that's your personality. But I'm pretty sure based on watching enough of him, that's not his personality.

of scheming him in the run game, but we also have to do a great job of making sure that he doesn't take some unnecessary hits and some unnecessary shots. The threat of him running the football immediately creates advantage. So really excited about that piece of

it, you know, and that's true. I was thinking about it, you know, Blake shaping, not much of a runner, Shane. So. Yeah, maybe a little Captain Obvious there, but we're unlocking something in Mississippi State that maybe we didn't see. And I, I think it caught Ole Miss off guard last year in the Egg bowl because he had some big time runs. I don't think they were quite prepared for it.

Yeah, I mean, I, I just feel like it opens up playbook. Right. For a team like Mississippi State that, that may need sometimes for them it's the three and outs. Right.

And something that, that he's going to be able to do is extend those drives by broken play sometimes. Right. And Chapin couldn't do that like you said. So I, I feel like that's why there's a little more excitement around this football team than there has been in the past. Just because dude's a freaking athlete and we've seen it. So it's not like we're watching some on three video. You know, though, we've. We've seen this guy actually do it and he could do it in the sec and, and I'm excited because everybody in that camp is talking highly about him.
