Now nobody's gone outright and said they're making a playoff, but basically they think they could be flirting with it late in the year. We had Dari Noka say that. We had J.D. beel say that. You know them in Florida they think are going to be the two most improved teams in the conference. And a big reason is because they kicked old Hughes ass to the curve, you know.

Well, you know, it was a sexy pick and I feel like that's kind of what Media Days was. It was okay, who's going to win the sec, who's going to make it to the college football playoffs and which team is going to surprise us, especially the new new hires. And, and you know, a lot of people went down there to the florid haters, but there are a handful that says wait, it's over here on the plains. And, and maybe I'm not as high on them, but Mike, I think they're excited about that because I think I. There's been moments I said they're going to the playoffs with you. Freeze. And boy was I wrong.

We're going to try. Obviously we can't get to all 16, but I promise you we won't do one more than one location. We're going to hit 16 so hopefully I can see some cousins out there and try to find out who is the best damn tailgater this side or that. Actually, I'm going to be going the other side, Mississippi. So in the country. So that's what we're doing. Stay tuned. We'll have some more notes and I'll let you know more of the scheduling that's coming up. But yeah, starting week one, we hit the road.

But, but yeah, we' so many, so many years, man, I've wanted to get to every single one of these stadiums and, and experience what the fans see, you know, day in, day out. the sec College football. I put that in the headline. It's not clickbait, Shane. It is not clickbait. Massive changes appear to be on the horizon. So I'm gonna break this down as simply as I can, okay? Because even some of this is difficult for me to even understand. But recently, and we've covered it, the NCAA said everybody can have five years to play five seasons.

Yes.

[Shade]

And that's where we've kind of discussed it. So this is official, right? So we got freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior. We've always had that. And now we got fifth year player. Yep, five fifth year player. So that is, is in effect today. That's in effect moving forward. You got five years to play. Now this, there's a judge in Colorado, always in college. These judges, they, she has come out and said, okay, well, anybody that just graduated and ran out of eligibility, you should get your fifth year, too. So we've got all these players that are, you know, trying to make NFL rosters. They're now eligible to go back to college. And this is like a blanket thing. We, we discussed Sterling Webb. We have an update on him from Missouri. That was last week. He got a judge's order, so he didn't make an NFL. So he said, well, hell, I'll go back to Missouri for another year. There's a lineman, I believe his name's Cole Hut Hudson, something like that. He didn't make the NFL, so he's apparently going back to Texas. Right? So this judge said, all right, well, we can't have this guy and that guy. We're just going to give it to everybody. Everybody, everybody gets a prize. Everybody gets a car. You get an extra year if you just ran out of eligibility. Now here's the tricky part, Shane. Now everybody thought that meant, well, hell, I guess the transfer portal's open and it's just like everything's going crazy and we can just pick apart free. We're about to start camp. We need a tackle. Let's go get a tackle. We need a quarterback. Let's go Get a quarterback. Doesn't quite work that way. If you're not already in the portal. Remember, there's a deadline and there's always. The last couple years there's been a deadline. I think it's late January, early February. Pardon me. It's one of those. If you're not in the portal, you cannot enter late. You can't enter today.

And they've done that after Nico and all these guys because they don't want people exiting after spring. They don't want guys exiting in the middle of fall camp. So if you are not in the transfer portal. And why would you. Because you thought. You thought your college is over. You cannot. Like Sterling Webb, who's going back to Missouri. He can't just go in the portal and be like, I'm going to go play for Tennessee. You can't do it because he's missed the portal window. But what you can do is have guys that have just exhausted their eligibility. They could come back for another season on the same team, but cannot transfer, is my understanding. Unless they were already in the transfer portal. And I don't know how many of them. I have no idea if there's any in the portal already. I don't know why you'd be in the portal if you don't have any college football remaining. Now here's the tricky part, Shane. They. They knew this was going to happen. Apparently. They claim they knew this was going to happen. So shout out. I don't want to read this whole damn thing, but this is. The lawyers working for the ncaa.

They said, hey, we did this for a reason. We knew we were going to get sued into oblivion. And these guys that just ran out of eligibility, we're going to say, well, why not us? Give us five years. And that's exactly what happened. And why is that important, Shane? Because apparently that was the final straw with this current congressional bs.

Where the SEC and the Big Ten were kind of holding out and they did not agree with a lot of this. It's called the Protect College Sports Act. They are literally. They're at the deadline basically to get this thing done. And it didn't look like it was

going to get done until Friday night.

Till I was at Spider man on Friday night, I couldn't do anything about it. But the sec, the Big Ten have come to a joint statement, Shane. They are going to support the protect your sports act. College. Excuse me, the Protect the college Sports act as currently drafted. So they got amendments in it. They got it the way they want. It written essentially and they are going to support this now and they were the, they were the main holdouts. Now again the only reason I've not really talked a ton about this on the show, Shane, because I think it's kind of foolish until, until it's official and it's not official but now that the SEC and the Big Ten are supporting it, there's very few people against this.

And they're, it's my understanding they're going to vote on that this, this week because if they don't do it this week, these damn politicians, they take like a month off or whatever. So they're, they're going to try to get this done this week. And now here, now here's the very, very important part. That again all that was kind of BS who cares about politics. This, that and the other, this is what's being written in this law, Shane. This is what the SEC and the Big Ten wanted and they got it. New revenue share figures. So we've, we've had this the entire time, right. The like the last year or two, whatever, a 22 and a half million dollar salary cap essentially. But, but the thing is it's not a salary cap, right. Because Texas is spending 40, 50 million. LSU spending 40, 50 million. So it's not really a cap if it's, but it's supposed to be a cap that 22.5 and everybody's found ways around this. So this is what they're doing, this is what they're put and this is going to be federally legal. If it passes, which is likely to pass, Everybody will have 22 and a half million dollars to retain the players that are currently on your roster and an additional 21.3 million to spend in the portal. So football rosters conceivably could have as a high a budget as $43.8 million annually and they're also allowing 5 extra million to non revenue sports. So it's a total of 48.8. But for our purposes all that matters is 43.8. Yeah, but again, 22.5 million to retain your roster, 21.3 to go out and spend in free agency. And why are they doing this? Shane? Because I know people think it's like unlimited money, but I think even the Texas is and the A and Ms. And the Texas Techs at some point are going to say we can't afford $60 million rosters.

Right.

[Shade]

We can't afford 70. I mean they're, they're going to go broke at some point.

[Shane]

So Is this a cap?

[Shade]

And that's, that's the thing that. So this is. If it's going to be written in a federal law, the SEC and the Big Ten are agreeing to this. And if. Now are there punishments? I don't know. But I have to believe if the SEC is saying, all right, so this, this is the number. You go over it, there's going to be some consequences. So I, I do think if this gets passed into law federally and you cannot fight this in court, you can't go to a local judge because the federal law supersedes any local judge or state judge or state court or anything. $43.8 million is going to be the cap for what you can spend on a football team moving forward.

Wow. So doesn't mean that you necessarily have to spend this. Right. Because there's going to be some universities. That's just not going to be possible. But a cap to keep that in place. I am, is. I'm trying to think, what's the workaround is there. Let's just say if, you know, you hit this cap. But Bill's auto store wants to sell some ads and he's got a quarterback. You know, just. Let's say Gunner said, hey, man, come around here and your, your old pickup truck and, and we'll cut you a check for $10,000. You know, does that go toward that number or is that just totally separate? Because I think of it like the NFL, right. You have a salary is what you're making, but you could still go do Adidas commercials and Nike commercials and stuff like that, make money beyond that.

I think, to my knowledge, I think that's still allowed. Yeah, but I don't think that money is out there anymore, Shane. After several years of nil, I don't think you. You got Perkins paying Tennessee's recruits anymore, you know? Yeah, I think after. After we had a flood of money coming into these recruits, now all of a sudden they're saying, I want millions of dollars. Who now's got millions of dollars to pay? Tennessee just got a running back.

Yeah.

[Shade]

$2 million. You know how they did it? Adidas. How many Adidas are out there going to buy players? I mean, we're talking a very, very small amount of players. So most of it is going to have to be paid by these schools and this revenue sharing. So I think that is still on the table, but I mean, how many guys is that really going to affect? I don't think hardly any, but on.

[Shane]

On the opposite side, too. And I hate to keep Bouncing back and forth. But potential kids coming back. Right. I mean, some of them are at their limit. Scholarships and stuff. How does that play out? Is. Or there's going to be adjustments there, you know, is. What if some of them took some money to get a flight somewhere? I mean, I don't want to be that guy, but we got a dude sitting two games because he went to NFL. So I would imagine if you've been to these camps, somebody's paid for you to be there, so.

[Shane]

What does that look like? So is this as messy as it sounds or is this something they're just going to say, you know what, we knew this like ncaa. Hey, we knew this was going to come up. We're going to just. Everybody gets a free start, a fresh start here, but moving forward, we're on this five, five year deal.

No, the, the, the roster limits and all that still apply. Okay, so if Missouri had no room, they couldn't, they couldn't even add Sterling Web.

Yeah, but they, they had room.

They, they welcomed him back. He's back. So everything still applies. You can't go over your, your cap number, you can't go over roster spots. Yeah, everything still applies.

I mean, here's Pavia half again.

I think he's done. But, you know, if I, if I'm Josh Hyple, I'm wondering, Aguilar, can we get Joey Aguilar back in here? Yeah, I don't know that you could, but I would, I would at least try.

Yeah, this is, yeah, this is going to be a hot mess because like you said, kids are, we're, we're here. It's upon us, you know what I'm saying? And, and some of these guys, I would imagine are still in football shape and, you know, a lot of the ones that you'd want back anyway because they're trying to make a roster somewhere, so. But I am kind of curious how this one plays out. We'll find out soon. I think they said Tuesday, right? Wasn't it Tuesday or something like that? They plan on voting on this, but

I don't know the specific day, but I know it's this week.

And I do, but it gets a little convoluted. But I, I do think, like, we have a situation right now where it's, you know, LSU signed A couple guys off Ole Miss had that. Had signed. I think if. That. If you try to do that in the future, I believe that would come out of old LSU's money on retention, even because you're stealing someone else's players that have already agreed and signed. So basically, they want to make it incredibly difficult for you to do that.

So where it. You. It counts against your free agent money and I guess your retention money.

Like a double hit.

Right. So it just makes it a little bit more difficult to do that, if that makes sense.

Well, I mean, that's one way to not eliminate. You don't want to eliminate the portal, but slow it down a little bit. You know, was there any conversations in this bill about. About that, you know, can only go so many times or. Yes.

Only one transfer, I believe.

Yeah. So that's another big one to. To keep in mind. So I'm sure there'll be a Colorado. So no Colorado judge could come up and say something about this bill if it gets passed. Right.

It's my understanding. Yeah. Because it would be federally a law, and I don't. I think that would supersede any of the. That's why they want to get this passed, so that they. So we could just have standardized rules for as many of these things as we could possibly have.

I mean, we've been bitching and complaining about it for so long, Mike. You know, it may not have everything you want in it. Right. But at least it's now something in stone that we can put guardrails on this. Because I always think about those 18 wheelers coming down the hill. You ever see those ramps that they take? Like, if your brakes go out, you can go out. Yeah. I feel like that's kind of what's happened here. Our brakes are smoking, and we're coming up on that deal. So hopefully this. This bill will. Will kind of ease some of that and normalize a little bit what college football should be.

Because again, is this, is this going to get solved first week? No, certainly not A lot of these. Maybe not even till game week, but Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt. You know, all these competitions are going to be getting into high gear here in the days and weeks to come. Shane, again. Bama. Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt. I think those are all of them there. Eddie, which, which one of these quarterback competitions kind of intrigues you the most today?

Well, I thought Tennessee for a long time, but honestly, Mike, I gotta pivot real quick. After media days. I think Alabama is the, is the biggest one I want to hear. Just because of what DeBoer talked about. Both of the quarterbacks. It was almost like he was warning us that we're going, that, that this is a true battle. Don't be pissed off if we pick this guy. Not this guy. I, I feel like this one is a, a dead heat, man, and probably the one that I'm most intrigued about. So I would say Alabama first, Tennessee second.

[Shade]

And shout out to Dari Noka, put out that interview yesterday. Again. We do all these interviews and they're so great, but when you do 40 plus, they all kind of run together till you go back and edit them, you know? And yeah, his bold take, I loved it. Keelan Russell, top three quarterback, Shane in the SEC by the end of the year. And Bama's in the SEC championship contention. College football playoff contention.

Yeah, I mean that's.

That, that again, that's a bold take. Yeah, but I don't think that's like wildly unrealistic, do you?

No, it's not. Because, you know, there, there are a handful of quarterback competitions, but even a smaller group, I would say, what two teams that I feel like the quarterback hitting takes this team to the playoffs. Right. So that's a small, small sample size there. And, and Alabama probably, you know, if I were power Ranking most pissed off fans probably Alabama right now. Just the way they've been treated here. Everybody's putting them down. They ain't good no more. But I'm telling you brother, all that changes if Russell comes out or if Matt comes. It doesn't matter at whatever quarterback comes out here and plays Deborah's offense like he wants pair it with this pretty damn good defense. I, I feel like Alabama is another program that we're just not giving enough respect to. It's like Rodney D. Yeah, I just get no respect. And that's exactly what they would get if they nail this quarterback competition.

Nobody knows more about these quarterbacks in my opinion than old Brooks Austin. He studies them in high school, all the way obviously to college. But he says, you know, their quarterback is his favorite incoming transfer. I mean that's a, that now that's a little bit of a bold take but now again he, he did say that Aaron Philo, he know Aaron Philo's from Georgia. He's got a relationship with him. So he did say he was a little biased there.

But I, I did, I thought that was particularly noteworthy. You know, what if, what if Florida. Because right now, right, we look at Florida, we're like man question at quarterback. But what if it's not a question what if It's a what if it's a massive strength. What, what could the Gators be?

I mean that again it's the linchpin of a successful season and, and I think I, I, I naturally feel like the Florida Gators are going to be substantially better than they were last year and not so much because of Philo, but maybe because of ball, maybe because of this defense. Some of the returning production, you know, I, I coach John Sumrall but if the quarterback comes in here and just lights the world up kind of like what you're saying Brooks was saying this is with these wide receivers. Holy Mike. The Florida Gators may be a serious threat in the sec. So yeah, I, I don't hate this at all.

doesn't need to be right. I think September 19th, for those that are just listening, they've got Austin P. And the Delaware Blue Hen. So I, I think Coach Lee could quarterback back there and beat these two teams. But, but, you know, you get to NC State, you go on the road to Auburn and Georgia, then Ole Miss. I mean, it, it ramps up real quick at the end of the month, so you got to get it right. But yeah, I don't necessarily think you need to start the, you know, the freshman quarterback, but there'll be a lot of pissed off fans if he's not out there, I would imagine. You know, especially with all the controversy in the off season and, and everything it took to get him there. They. They want to put all that emotion, all that love that they had, Diego Pavia, and they want to put it somewhere and if it's not Curtis, they don't have anywhere to put it. So, yeah, I feel like this is a kind of force your hand top competition.

Well, and I know every situation's different, right?

It's kind of foolish to, to make a blanket statement, put it on all these guys. But again, shout out another great interview we did Adam Sparks where he was saying, this is almost like your first round, maybe first overall pick. How long can you. Can you really sit these guys? And it's different in college, right, because you can transfer. Of course, maybe we're putting a. We're putting an end perhaps to unlimited transfers. But still you, you do have the ability to transfer. Does that play into it at all, Shane, where, you know, what if it's tied? If it. And again, is it really tied? I don't know, but if it is, usually they go with the guy that's got a little bit of experience over the true freshman. But if you don't play Curtis, he might come transfer time. He's like, I should have been playing. You know, they're. You gotta, you gotta juggle that. You gotta juggle. Nine game sec. What if we go out there and get this kid killed? You know, where's his confidence? I mean, it's. To me, it's a, it's an interesting position to be in if you're Vanderbilt. Who returns? I know he's not played a lot, but Blaze Berlowitz, he's been in the system, knows it well, he's played. I would imagine he's very popular in that locker room. And then in comes the million dollar man, who somebody is. I don't know if it was on three or what, but. But someone Did a report that said he may be getting as much as $10 million. Shane yeah, over a three, four year period. I think it's three years. But again, if it's anywhere near that, I, Buddy, I don't know how you sit.

Jared Curtis I don't either. I really don't. But you know, it's similar to the NFL but different. Right? You, you, you, you draft your franchise quarterback and you bring them in and you try so hard to keep them on the bench. Right. Give, give them time. But let's don't, let's don't get crazy here. We brought them in to probably a two win NFL team so odds are you're going to need them sooner than later. And then about week four, week five, the starter gets a turf toe and then he's out and the other guy comes in. So would be surprised if you know, they don't work him in. But you would love, I think Coach Lee to really, I mean he's, this is, this is, this is where he's going to end his college football career. If he could help it, right. He would stay there for 40 years, build this into a powerhouse. I know it. But you don't have the luxury of like hey let's, let's, let's get him better. Let's get him ready. Year two, year three, like the old school, it just doesn't work that way. They're going to throw them into the fire and you just pray to God it's not a Bo Nicks fiasco. Right. So it is a slippery slope and I, it's, I think it a little different than putting a friend, you know, a rookie quarterback in the NFL as opposed to a true freshman in the sec. That's asking a lot, man.

Ole Miss is, is definitely one I was down on coming into media days and probably the biggest mover of the bunch and a lot of that had to do with, you know, just people that we talk to. Right. And they just made me realize some of the stupid mistakes I was making earlier. So this is a really, really good football team, Mike. I think the defense is probably where I had less confidence in and I gained the most during media days.

This is like Stephen Lass's favorite talking point. Offensive lines and a concern for everybody, which it maybe not everybody, but these are all the teams I have listed. Let me know if you agree. Disagree. Bama, Auburn, Florida, lsu, Ole Miss. Replacing both offensive tackles. Mississippi State, Missouri. I thought we were good. Now it turns out they're right tackle. He may not play this year. South Carolina, A and M, Vanderbilt. Those are all the teams I have listed as major concerns that you know, if we're, if we're locking into something during training camp, it's offensive line for every single one of those.
