My wife, she did the paint sip the other day. Yeah, dude, Picasso. That's the best painting. I'm starting to wonder if she was there with someone else while I'm working my ass off at media days. Was she with a cute man? And maybe he drew that picture. Just say it. No, I was just kidding. I love my wife.
SEC Mike
I know you just teased it. Yeah, I probably should talk about you this stuff off air. But we're all family, right?
Listener/Caller
Yeah.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
Any chance on Sunday you'll also be talking about the Shane train? Or is that premature talk?
Cousin Shane
No, that's. That's happened and that was part of the. The. The pro. You know what? Why are we waiting on Sunday? You know, if you're here on a. A Wednesday, you deserve to know before the Sunday.

Cousin Shane
jokes on me? Mike hired an years ago.
SEC Mike
Yeah. And guess you know what his name is.
Cousin Shane
Oh, the legend. The legend. Cousin Junior has done it again.
SEC Mike
Thank you, Junior. What a legend. Glad to see you back, buddy. Hope all is well. And Junior Shane gifted a membership to LS Gober Goldberg.
Cousin Shane
Welcome to the family of the legend.
SEC Mike
A lot go. So a lot going on behind the scenes, Shane. But a lot going on on the field? Yeah, sort of. Kind of. We got breaking news this morning, Shane. Some bullshit if you ask me. If you missed it. I guess the NCAA is still a thing, Shane. Yeah, but only when it comes to Tennessee. Remember Joey Aguilar? He's the only quarterbacks not eligible anymore. Well now apparently this is official. All SEC linebacker Ariane Carter suspended shade suspended for two games. What did he do? He bet on some games. Did he? Did he commit a robbery? I mean all these guys are getting away with murder out here. They're all millionaires and more power to him. But what did Arian do? What did he do? Shane? He declared for the draft and took a flight that was. Let me, let me get this official. $427. He took a $427 ticket and he paid it back to do the, the pre draft, you know, training, all that. And they said oh you can't take money from an agent. Oh no you cannot. So he suspended for two games for Tennessee. And I don't know if you heard this shape but originally it was a three game suspect. They, they got to talk down to to two so he'd come back for Kennesaw because we're going to need it for that one. But most importantly Ariane, he's out for Georgia Tech and what a damn shame this is. Can you believe us?
Cousin Shane
Can we not pick the ones like the first two home yet? Do the Florida get the Steve spur your route here or was that Mark Rick one of them boys they kept get we made fun of but no, this is stupid. It's so dumb right when we're talking, I mean all the that's floating around the sec, not just SEC but all conferences. This is the, this is the hill you're dying on absolute joke. And I really do feel like there's something personal in this. Maybe all that stuff Jeremy Pruitt got away with, they're like hey, we got to get them back on something, you know, so I really hate that we're gonna miss him. This is the, this is the absolute captain on that defense. And you know I clearly, I don't think it's going to be a problem week one but on the road Georgia Tech, I mean you know, sometimes it's a bad lineup or something on defense it becomes an explosive play. So I hate it. This is stupid.
SEC Mike
Cousin Derek EARLY LEADER Comment of the DAY Shane Cracker Barrel CEO they just resigned. They at the NCAA now they're still
Cousin Shane
hurting me cuz I don't know what I did to her.
SEC Mike
But for anybody that you know has forgotten or maybe they just didn't know. So Ariane, he, he declared for the draft. So it is a little different. You know, you could declare for the draft, beat down, you kind of come back and then what happened was he's injured.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
So they, the NFL draft said hey buddy, you, you probably should go back to school because you're going to be injured through the whole draft process. He didn't participate the spring. So he came back to school, entered the portal, but Tennessee kept him. So that, that was the official timeline. So he took a flight during all that. Again, he paid it back. It's not like he's back. And if, if an nil endorsement had paid for this, it would have been totally legal, but you just can't take money from an agent. So I, I don't know. Shane. This is, this is, this is just wild here.
Cousin Shane
It's stupid. It's stupid, Mike. And it just, it opens up doors, right? That, that, that whole picky, choosy attitude, that's why we hate the ncaa. Because this is what happens. They. They choose small battles that they think they can win or know they can win, and then they put that badge of honor and say, hey, I did a good job today, honey. So, no, this is, this is the dumbest thing ever when there's so much corruption in college football that truly should be punished by the ncaa and it's not, it's overlooked.
SEC Mike
Well, you know who we're not going to overlook?
Cousin Shane
Shane Rota showing up for them boys in Tuscaloosa. It's Stephen Up. Roll Tide.
SEC Mike
Shout out. Stephen up. He gifted a membership shade to the Moose is loose.
Cousin Shane
Oh, nice name. Moose. Welcome to the family.
SEC Mike
Appreciate you. Steve it up. Well, you know who else who got a little loose this afternoon? Shane.
Cousin Shane
Oh, who's that?
SEC Mike
John Sumrall. Did you see this?
Cousin Shane
I loved it.
SEC Mike
Anybody that missed it. So apparently Summer all his wife is out of him. He loves pedicures. I think it is. You know, when you get your toes done again. Is that really relevant? No. Would we ever be talking about this any other world? No, but apparently Dan or, Or lost Glee. I think whoever the. However the hell. I never had respect for that guy, Shane. But he was mocking him on espn, right?
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
Saying, oh, you can't have, you can't have this. We can't have a elite football coach that's getting pedicures. And John Sumrall saw that and he retweeted this. Sumrall sniffing a damn woman's shoe here. This is a real thing. This is not. AI I confirm this is real. And again, he's just having some fun. But I, I, I like the fact that our coach down in Florida, he ain't talk. He ain't taking no. He's gonna troll your ass if you're gonna try to kill him.
Cousin Shane
We need some more trolls in the sec. Mike. I love this man. You want to see a dead body? Another photo I saw Is, oh, Dan in capri pants. You know, that wasn't AI either. So we're, we're saying, okay, no pedicures, but you could wear capri pants.
SEC Mike
I just thought that was great. That guy, that guy sucks. That Dave guy, he's the guy that ran out of the end zone for a safety. You remember that? Like one of the worst all time plays of all time with the Lions.
Cousin Shane
Yeah. No, I know exactly who Dan is, and I've owned Dan zero times on my fantasy football teams. Thank God.
SEC Mike
All right, well, buddy, we got to get into it because we got a lot to cover, what we missed at media days here. And stars of the show is what we heard. Shane. And stars of the show, it was Pete Golding, John Summerall. Buddy, we just kind of teased what, what kind of guy John Sumrall is. He's a wild card, right?
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
But let's. First we got Pete Golding because I, I think Pete Golding did even outshine him a little bit more. So here's Pete Golding. He was asked about his relationship with Lane Kiffin. And again, it's interesting. We got a first time head coach. We got a coach that is on his six or seven job now. We got one of them acting like an adult. Which one is it, Pete? Michael Kassa with the Daily Journal.
Pete Golding
This one might have a complicated answer, but what is your relationship like with.
SEC Mike
With Lane right now?
Pete Golding
Look, you know, I get this everywhere we go. So we're, we're on our Caravan tour right now with Ole Miss, and we go every Tuesday and Thursday and take a couple of players and go around the country. So we go Q and A with everybody. So it's. Everybody tell me how you really feel about them. You know, they're like this intimate, you know, environment. But Lane and I are good. Like, like, so, you know, I did not know Coach Kiffin prior to taking the Ole Miss job. I think everybody just assumes. Alabama. Alabama. I wasn't at Alabama when Coach Kiffin was, you know, so I didn't come to Ole Miss because of Coach Kiffin. I came to Ole Miss to be at Ole Miss to raise three kids. So, you know, our relationship really grew in those three and a half years. And he did a lot for me, and I was very, very appreciative of how he treated me and my family and learned a lot from him. So I have no ill will towards Coach Kiffin. He texts me on a regular basis and there are certain things that we'll talk about and there are certain things that we don't talk about. He's very competitive, just like I'm very competitive. Right. And so obviously, a lot of this went a different direction when now he had a new job with new responsibilities, and he's going to be super competitive to be the best that he can at that job. Right. Which is his job. And so I can separate the two. I know some people can't. So, you know, I tell a lot of these people, and I probably shouldn't say this, but I don't care. All right. Like I told an Ole Miss group the other day at 21, I said, all right, in 2021, if you said you could look in 2025 and you're about to be 11 and one to go to the playoff, would you take it if your coach was leaving? Hell, yeah. I was like, you would. Everybody won from it. It's okay. Keith, like, you made a great hire. He did a great job. Every place isn't for everybody. That's coaches, that's players. That's your job. That's everything. And that's okay, you know? And so throughout the process, I'll be the first one to tell you. I told him I was thinking he was dumb. If he was to leave, I wanted him to stay. That was the same selfish decision because I love being the DC where I was at.
Cousin Shane
Right.
Pete Golding
But he decided what was better for him and his family, and that's for him to decide. So I have no ill will towards him at all. All right. Wish him the best of luck. We play him like every other SEC team, and we're gonna both show up and spot the ball and play. So I. I talked to him on a regular basis, but no ill will at all. Right. And really appreciative of how he treated me and my family. And then this created an unbelievable opportunity for me as well, on top that I really wasn't looking for, but so appreciative of to have.
SEC Mike
Oh, and he. He didn't mention Hulk Hogan one time, Shane.
Cousin Shane
No, not one time. No, he didn't, brother.
SEC Mike
But, hey, I love this. I mean, again, he's, you know, he's. He's doing his part to bury the damn hatchet. And I think he said it perfectly. And I think Ole Miss fans and LSU fans, you know, everybody could be happy. Yes, Ole Miss should be. I know it. It was ugly as hell. We covered the whole thing. Everybody knows. But at the. At the end of the day, as a wise man would say, Ole Miss is at a better place because Elaine Kiffin and now Pete Golding is here to take it to that next level because mission was not accomplished and they still got work to do down there. I think that was the right message.
Cousin Shane
It was. And what I think is also, I mean, it's just going to happen, man. These, these coaches, these two particular coaches will be handcuffed with media for a couple of years, especially this season. Right now, obviously everybody's going to be talking about the third game of the year when these two teams get to face each other. But you better damn believe that after 12, you know, 12 football games, we're going to compare the records between Pete and Lane. It's just going to happen. So I don't think. I don't think he cares. Everything happens for a reason. Why would Pete be mad, right? I mean, he's the head coach at Ole Miss, and honestly, if it didn't happen exactly the way it did, he wouldn't be. So I feel like he's in a great spot. I absolutely love the transparency that this coach has. Several coaches have now in the S.E.C. and yeah, he, he's. He's just ready to spot the football and win some damn games, man.
SEC Mike
And then he had. He was asked repeatedly, Shane, again, if you ain't gonna ask Peter Cheat Golding. Excuse me. I almost called him Pete Cheat Goldie, if you're gonna ask him about. If you're not gonna ask about Kiffin, you're probably gonna ask about tampering, right? So, yes, he got asked multiple times. And finally he was like, all right, this is what I really think about tampering right here. Hey, Pete. Dan walking Yahoo Sports, right over here.
Pete Golding
Yep.
Cousin Shane
Sorry to pick at this again, but how would you fix tampering? Or is it something that cannot be fixed in this environment?
Pete Golding
Let me put it to you this way, okay? Like, it'd be. So obviously you're a porter, right? Would you quit your job before interviewing for another job or being offered another job? No, no, no, Nobody would. But. Right, but we have a portal that you can go in with a do not contact. I'm gonna quit my job where I'm getting paid, and I'm gonna go in saying I need a new job, but nobody can call me to interview. Like, what have we created? So we've created it on top of representation for these players, Right. That it's their responsibility to make sure they get paid really well and they also have opportunities. So by design, it's put a lot of people in bad positions. And let's not act like recruiting in college football for the last hundred Years is the most moral thing, right. That's ever been existed. I mean, like, what are we talking about here? So I'm really not going to get into my feelings, and I know how I've been educated to answer this question, right. Does that make sense? It's where we have a great, great compliance department, right. And all those type of things. But no, I mean, the model obviously has been broken, and I'm all for everybody being on the same playing field and doing the same things. I get it. But I think that's in any job, right? Like coaches, we're under contract. You don't think other ads are calling us during the year? Same ones that are bitching about all this stuff are the same ones calling coaches, right. To come to other schools and everything. So it's everywhere. It's in every profession. So I'm not saying I've got all the answers. I'm not saying that at all. Does that make sense? So we go by then the rules of the program, right? And how the flow. Just like when you're on the interstate and people are flying by you, what do you start doing? You damn right you're gonna get hit.
Interviewer
Right?
Pete Golding
Does that make sense in this profession? You're gonna get fired.
John Sumrall
Right?
Pete Golding
So I'm not saying that, but I think there are a lot of people that are doing an unbelievable job. Greg being one. Right. To make sure that, all right, everything's catching up. College football is constantly changing, all those type of things. So hopefully we'll all, you know, decide on what's fair for everybody.
Cousin Shane
One second. All right, Mr. Terry. All right, I'll talk to you later.
Pete Golding
Bye Bye.
SEC Mike
You go to all three. Is that the announcement?
Cousin Shane
Can we wrap this up, Mike?
SEC Mike
Hey, if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying. You know, like you said. Hey, everybody's going 80. What happens if he goes dabo route and says, I will play it by the rules? They're going to run his ass out of there before you know it. You know it.
Cousin Shane
Yeah. And the leash is a lot shorter up there in Oxford than it is over in Clemson. So, yeah, I definitely agree this is the right answer. And. And I know it's so funny. Bad. Like when somebody gets caught, we. Oh, we got. You got it. Yeah. But it's also like. We know, but we just don't want to say. Right?
SEC Mike
Yeah. So again, I mean, he's putting it on display. I think he's going off script there. I thought that was. I thought that was great.
Cousin Shane
Loved it.
SEC Mike
He had. He had another one Shane. And this may be his best line of the day. He was asked once again about Kiffin, and he brings up ex wives.
Pete Golding
Justin Patrick, Fox Sports Radio on a Pensacola, Florida. Hey, Coach. You've had to answer the questions about LSU and Lane, probably in every presser since November, including this one right here. I just wanted to ask, you know, when September 19th is over, win or lose, do you expect this storyline to kind of be put to bed, or do you think it's going to still follow you throughout the remainder of the season? I think that's up to y'.
Kaylin DeBoer
All.
Interviewer
Okay.
Pete Golding
No, I mean, there's always going to be history. It's the X, right? I mean, there's always going to be the history. Like, do you have an ex? Are you married?
Listener/Caller
Okay. All right.
Pete Golding
Well, if you do get married, right, and you have an ex that your wife knows about, like, she doesn't ever end. She's never dead.
Listener/Caller
Right?
Pete Golding
Like, she's always going to get brought up. And so that's kind of. It's where it is right now, right?
Listener/Caller
That.
Pete Golding
That's always going to be there a little bit, which is fun to a certain degree. But, you know, the thing about this league is, y' all know, like, your focus better be on lsu. It better be on LSU week three, right? And if you're focused on a Kentucky at home and you lose the game and go to the playoffs, you're. You're focusing on a Florida on the road, right? When you're number five in the country and you lose another play, like, you got to put your focus week in and week out in this league, which is what I love about this league. And then for us, the way our schedule set up, we got Louisville, who's a top 25 team, in a neutral site to open this thing up. If we're worried about anybody outside of Louisville, you better hold on. And so I think that's what I love about this league. It allows us as coaches and players, I know there's a lot of noise out there to put our focus back on what's matter and it's the next opponent. But LSU will get our undivided attention in week three, and they'll deserve every bit of it.
SEC Mike
So that isn't a little bit of coach speak, Shane, but at the same time, it's 100, right?
Cousin Shane
Yep.
SEC Mike
Shout out to Neil McCready. We just posted his video today. Go check it out after this show's done. But yeah, that's exactly what Shane asked him. You know what? What the hell's the Matter or, you know, is lsu. That game's not as big if you, if you drop Louisville.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
And he says, man, there's no way if Ole Miss, I mean, conceivably you could do it. But if you lose the Louisville, are you really going to go 10 and one with LSU at Florida at, at Texas, Georgia at Oklahoma? I mean, good luck, you know, so you really got to win week one. And hell, even if you do beat lsu, which is no given, you're going to have to get your ass right up off the mat and go to the swamp. Good luck. I mean, you, you really do got to take us one at a time. No. No matter how much focus we want to put on Ole Miss, lsu. You know what?
Cousin Shane
Yes, absolutely, man. There's. And, and I love it. I love the buildup for that game, man. I, I just. I, I feel like this is the game of the year. Right. But do you remember when we were talking about Oklahoma and Mizzou? Man, that was going to, it was a couple years ago. This is going to be epic. And then team started losing and it lost a little luster by the time it came around. And it wasn't so such a big day. Game day was not there. But game day will be at this one. But it will lose a lot if you drop with Louisville. And Louisville's got a really good football team, so you can't sleep on them either.
SEC Mike
Yeah. And again, it's, you know, what do we do, Shane? We kind of base everything. Not everything, but a lot of stuff on last year.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
And what you got coming back. And I mean, we, we should know by now, but again, we just love college football. We grew up with it.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
But it's never been quite like this. Where. Again, I don't follow Louisville religiously, but, you know, they were like a top 25ish team. For all I know, they could be a top five team this year. You know, with, with the portal additions they've had. Same thing with Ole Miss. I mean, they, they could be arguably the best team in the country given the additions they had. We. We just don't know. It's anybody's best guess. And you ain't got, you know, an Appalachian. Well, of course they pulled some, some upsets. You don't got to say it for week one to figure it out. You. You got to figure it out on the fly. You know what?
Cousin Shane
And success in this league is so small, man. It, it is a small window. And if you take your foot off the gas, if you make mistakes, you Know all of a sudden that momentum dries up, that the, the, the boosters dry up, right? And then all of a sudden that lifestyle that you got accustomed to live in goes away. You got to get another part time job. You don't want to do that, you want to keep winning. And so you got to start week one and not to get coach cliche but it is I think by far one of the most important week one game is going up to Nashville and beating Louisville Cardinals.
SEC Mike
Now one other thing, last clip here from old Cheat Golding. He was, he was asked about calling the defense something that Brett Venables does. He said, you know what, I reached out to Brett Venables, I thought this was pretty cool. And then I'll, I'll share my thoughts on the other side. Cause I, I thought this was a little red flag. I don't like head coach play caller, especially first time head coach. But after hearing this I, I like his answer.
Listener/Caller
Kevin Daniel.
Cousin Shane
Oh unitedly Pete, you're one of only kind of a handful of head coaches who take over defensive play calling. Brent Venables at Oklahoma is another one. What have you learned from him about what it takes to take on that
Pete Golding
responsibility as a head coach? Yeah, well you know I think I've said this before but he was my first phone call, you know and obviously there's so much respect for him and the job that he's done and that run the news at Clemson and all that and being young in the profession. So I knew he had went through it and didn't do it year one and did it year two and brought in the protege and then didn't do it year three and then now he was doing it. So I was like look man, let's just go ahead. From a dude that's been there very, very similar path and I was the first thing he's like, he's like look man, he's like don't stop doing what got you there, you know. And I was always hesitant on taking one of these because I love coaching. I got into coaching for $27,000. Like I didn't get into coaching for money. And so I was making more money. I knew what to do with like I love designing defenses, I like running rooms, I like going recruiting. And so that's always really hesitant on taking a head job because in my mind you got to be the CEO and then you stop doing the things that you actually really enjoy doing and making a difference in kids lives and everything comes CEO and very PR and fundraising and all those Things. So I went the other direction after talking to him. He's like, look man, nobody's going to call it like you. It's your system. You've done a great job. I went and hired people that have done the head coaching stuff and like, hey, you manage this and you do this because I, this shit's no fun to me.
John Sumrall
Right?
Pete Golding
Like you do that, let me go coach. And so then the combination of that's worked pretty good up to this point. But he was a big part of me deciding who I was going to hire and how I was going to hire him and building a staff, which I was really grateful for.
SEC Mike
So I just thought, I thought that was fascinating, Shane. And he said it in the other room too. Basically I made sure to surround myself with people that can do the head coaching responsibilities that in the other room he called it the I don't want to do. You know, they got a gm. He, he surrounded himself with people with head coaching experience, even NFL. Joe Judge was an NFL head coach. He's got these guys in there to help him handle this stuff so that he can remain defensive coordinator, so he can remain day to day coaching the players. And that's kind of fascinating. I'm interested to see if it'll work, but I think you almost have to do stuff like this in today's era with the, with the portal and all that. So. Yeah, I, I don't know. I thought that was very interesting.
Cousin Shane
It is, it is. But it's hard when, you know, you could tell how passionate he is about it. Right. I mean, just to release the reins and be a CEO. I feel like to have success there will have to be some separation. But then again, the reason that I feel like Ole Miss can be successful this year is because of that defense in particular. So yeah, it will be one of those that we will judge accordingly. It's one of those like, I don't think you can win. You're doing great. Usually the coordinator gets all the credit. Right. When things go bad, it's, it's like, well, it's because he's not near involved as he should be. So it feels a little bit like a lose, lose situation there.
SEC Mike
Yeah. Somebody's asking about the, the gm. So they got Austin Thomas. He's, he was quite literally the first GM in college football. He's been around SEC for 15, 20 years. He was at LSU. Obviously it didn't go too well last year at LSU, but he's been at LSU, a M, Ole Miss. I mean, yeah, he is, he is so yeah, I mean he could not have got a guy with more college GM experience. And he was, he was at LSU in 2019 when they won the national championship. So it's not like he was just there when they were sucking, you know.
Cousin Shane
Right. Yeah. Now he built that team. Built it. Now he's gonna build old Miss.
SEC Mike
How about of all those of my favorite was him comparing Lane Kiffin to ex wife, don't you think?
Cousin Shane
Yeah, I just again the openness that that coach shows. I. I thought the funniest was actually the next day which we will get into tomorrow. But the they led with. Now remember, this is business. We can't clap. So this is the first time in a long time and again a lot of this was Ole Miss guys. But it's the first time you actually heard an applause after a coach talked in the big room.
SEC Mike
Right. And you know Shane, not that I'm seeking applause.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike

SEC Mike
Well, speaking of getting it all Shane, I think that's what the Gators are getting judge summer. Oh, dude, I love this. Did you know Shane, there's three leagues. There's the nfc, the AFC and the damn sec. Hi coach Jacob Worland, Carry UI Iowa City. I wanted to ask you, you said explosive offense is mandatory at Florida. What does that look like beyond statistics?
Listener/Caller
Yeah, I think there's a style of play that matches the Florida Gators. You know, I, I grew up thinking there were three leagues of football as a kid. The afc, the NFC and the sec. I. And as a kid I sat in the south end zone Allegiant Field in 1993 and watched Florida play Alabama SEC championship game. And you just expect fun, explosive football from Florida offense. Now what's most important is a formula to help you win the game. But I think inherently we're in the state of Florida. We have access to great skill players. This state is loaded with receivers and running backs that can hit home run plays. And then we've got a lot of guys on our roster that are like that. So I just, I feel like speed, space, sometimes tempo within your play style fits Florida. Now we don't have to be tempo just for the sake of tempo. We got to do it, use it the right times to help us be successful. But there's a style of offense I think fits here.
SEC Mike
Because that's, that's a big question, right? Anytime you hire a defensive minded former linebacker, Shane Nes, he said, well, what kind of offense are you gonna run? He said, buddy, Steve Spurrier is my favorite Florida coach all time, you know, so I, I expect him to sling it around with that, with all those great receivers they have.
Cousin Shane
Yeah, and I, and I hear, oh, Steve and him got a pretty good relationship, unlike Millie Napier, so.
SEC Mike
But I do, I love that sec, the afc, NFC and the ec.
Cousin Shane
Put it on a shirt. Wear that shirt, Dan. If you're pumps
SEC Mike
and also shade, I'm a big believer. I say it all the time. Yeah, now these coaches get all the credit, but it's really the players you gotta, you, you've got to have the players. Kirby is an elite recruiter. Saban best of all time. John Sumrall knows it too.
Pete Golding
Hey, Coach Sumrall. Nick Vilmo with the Tampa Bay Times, you've had relatively quick success as a Head coach at Troy, at Tulane. Obviously it's never a one man show,
Kaylin DeBoer
but what do you bring to a
Cousin Shane
program that makes that possible?
Listener/Caller
I think a mindset of trying to help everybody in our program be the best they can be. My job as the head coach is to serve and develop everybody around me. It's not to be served. And so I wake up daily driven to help everyone in our building become their best. If everybody maximizes who they can become, then usually you have a chance to improve. That doesn't guarantee success, it just gives you the best opportunity. But you know, when people want to bring up maybe my track record as a head coach, I'm okay with people recognizing what we've done, but it's had a little bit to do with me, a lot to do with so many other people around me, starting with the players. It's a player driven game. Nobody comes to our games to watch me coach. They come to watch our players play. And so it's all about our players. It's about the coaches putting our players in the situation to be successful. I think those are the things that I try to stick to that help us find success.
SEC Mike
Hell yeah.
Cousin Shane
It's players band got me signing up again, you know, and that's the thing. He's just got, he's just got that attitude and, and you know that he's going to get the most out of the players. That's one of the crazy parts. It feels like some of these coaches, they can yell at you, you know, all day long, but you're not going to receive it. It's different when it's coming from Hill, man. It feels like this is a guy that was just in the trenches not too long ago and you could just kind of feel the energy around him. So I tell you brother, you're going to get the, the best out of the Florida Gators, I think this year mainly because of that man right there.
SEC Mike
Yeah, I mean, I think again, he hasn't done in the SEC as a head coach. Yeah, he's, he's been very successful as an assistant coach in the SEC, but he's won at least 10 games every year. Shane. So that, I mean, I think that tells you the players buy into what he's selling. And again it's, it's different story. Can he do that in Florida year one? I mean that's, that's going to be a tall drink of water, but it's very easy to see why these guys buy into him, don't you think?
Cousin Shane
Yeah, I, I told you, man, it didn't take long, man. One little interview and I was in Mike.
SEC Mike
And I love that. I love this, too.
Cousin Shane
Coaches, you know, so Drake just keeps moving down a little further.
SEC Mike
So he is, you know, he's said this kind of many times, but I, I think it's. I think it's the best way he said it. You know, it's how you, how you arrive matters, but. But how you leave, I think that really matters. And again, I don't. I don't. He's not throwing shade at Lane Kiff, and I think he's just being honest here. And he left Tulane the right way.
John Sumrall
Hey, John.
Pete Golding
Nathan King, 247 sports.
Cousin Shane
When you go back to your decision to go to Florida from Tulane, how big of a deal was it for
Pete Golding
you personally that Florida's administration said, hey, you know, if you want to coach Tulane through the.
Cousin Shane
Through the postseason, we will allow you to do that. How big of a deal was that
SEC Mike
for you as compared to maybe some
Cousin Shane
other opportunities you had?
Listener/Caller
Non negotiable. If somebody had. I don't care what the offer was on the other side, if somebody had said, hey, we need you to take this job and do it on our terms with how you finish the job at Tulane, the answer was not no, was hell no. All right? So I was going to do it the way I was to do it at the end of two lane. That place those kids had given me so much like, I was not going to walk out on that situation the wrong way. I think how you walk into a place says a lot about you. I think how you walk out of a place says a lot about you, too. And so if somebody wanted me to, like, fly back and forth every day during game prep for conference championship week, wasn't happen. I was going to be locked in to help Tulane win as many games for as long as we could.
SEC Mike
I like that, too.
Cousin Shane
Saying all the right things, isn't he. Isn't it funny how we will dog one? We got one coming up later this week. We're going to be tearing down, but this guy we're lifting up. And granted, he hasn't won a game in the Florida uniform, so I feel like he's saying the right things. Mike, this is exactly, in my opinion, you think of the last Florida Gator coaches. I mean, think about it. And there's a few. There's still some that are kind of out on this guy, which surprises me, but, I mean, he's gonna have to earn it because they've seen so much dog over the. The last decade that they're probably, they don't want to let their guard down. They don't want to let them in. They've been hurt too bad, Mike. But I do, I do think that they've got the right guy and he's, he's definitely saying the right things at the mic.
SEC Mike
Right. And not just, not just saying it. Shane. He's doing it.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
He said in another it was not an interesting clip necessary. So I didn't clip it. But he said when I, when I got hired, we were days away from the national signing period. Right. But we had a conference championship game at Tulane. So he did a zoom call. They had eight, Florida had 18 commitments. He did a zoom call with all of them at the same time. And then he said at the end, he said I got to get back to practice for Tulane, you know. So again is he could have just went all in on Florida. Hey, I'm the Florida coach now. To hell with Tulane. Tulane is a lower level. I'm going to try to go chase a championship at Florida, which he is doing. But he's, but, but he was still giving Tulane his time and he said that of those 18 guys that were committed the day he was hired, so they, he had no relationship with him until that point. 16 signed.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
So again he didn't, he, he lose, he lost two. But I think that's, I can't imagine many coaches get hired a couple days before signing period. 18 and then get 16 of them to sign. So again, even, even over the zoom, they were buying into them, Mike.
Cousin Shane
It's, it's burning bridges. I get on my kid like when she quits her little part time jobs, I'm like work out a notice. You never know when you're going to need that person again. You know what I'm saying? I mean prime example is John Sumrall, you know, who's his defensive coordinator, right. A guy he used to work for. So you never know who's in that room. There may have been a kid in that two lane room. There may have been a coach in that two lane room that you're going to need later in life to help your roster, your goals, you know, hit your goals. You just never know. So don't burn any bridges. Do the right thing and the right thing will happen to you.
SEC Mike
Now it's very, you know, all this is great, right? Like we're very excited. Oh, Florida playoffs, they could be sneaky good, right? Well, John, several says baby in September
Cousin Shane
5, how much realistic progress needs to be made for your group to each
Pete Golding
Saturday feel like, hey, we got a chance today.
Listener/Caller
We've got to get better every day. We can't waste a day. We're nowhere near arrived. Like, we can't waste a practice rep. You know, everything we do right now matters. It's all, all counting towards our development. And so for me, I just think the urgency we have to do things with, it's got to feel a little different than maybe what people are comfortable with at times that that's everybody are building. And so every day matters. Every rep matters. Every. Every meeting matters. You know, there's nothing that doesn't matter. We don't do anything just because it all matters. And so we've got to continue to stack good days. We have a long way to go. I'm not trying to temper expectations. My expectation is to win every time we play. We have a freaking long way to go.
SEC Mike
Wait a second. 75. I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
Cousin Shane
Is he also doing the lane Kiff in here?
SEC Mike
Dude, that was the last one. He got us all hyped up. And then he's like, yeah, you know what? This team's got a long ass. Way to go, you know?
Cousin Shane
Way to go. Yeah. Where he's selling tickets. Selling tickets. But he's also saying, hey, I'm gonna need you late in the season after a couple of losses. So, yeah, year two's a year.
SEC Mike
Well, you know who was year two was the year for Shane.
Cousin Shane
Who's that?
SEC Mike
Coach Elko who says, oh, coach, how do you motivate your team? He's like, well, let me just dunk on myself real quick.
Interviewer
Hi, coach.
SEC Mike
Jacob Worland, KRUI Sports. After last year's playoff run, how do you keep this team from becoming satisfied?
John Sumrall
I show them our trophy case and it's empty. And I think they're all very aware of that. And so, you know, I think, you know, listen, we live in a lot of worlds, and so we're obviously happy with the things that we accomplished. We're happy with the direction of our program, but it's also not lost on us that we haven't won the hardware that we're searching for. And so, you know, that gets us into a mindset of growth and getting back to work to go finish this thing a little bit better than we did last year and put ourselves in a better position maybe to compete for some trophies.
SEC Mike
I like that he said that, but it's just. It's very comical. You know what, man?
Cousin Shane
You talk about a viral clip, right? This. You Talk about out of contact. None of that second half of that conversation was in that header. You know that. Elko said, yeah, Texas had a lot of fans or a lot of fun with this one, but A M, they know, brother. You know, I feel like since they've came over to the sec, it was always, we're almost there, we're almost. We have almost arrived. But almost doesn't produce trophies. And. And I. I feel like A M's kind of at that fork in the road. Are we going to be one of the big boys that's making it to the playoffs every year that's going to compete for an SEC championship, or are we just kind of good being that fringe team? And I. And I think Elko took it personal, and you better damn believe this locker room has as well.
SEC Mike
Yeah, I think you're right, Shane. Now, I get it's one thing, and fair or not, because this means they're doing a hell of a job there, right? But they just had what, like 10 guys go to the league? Yeah, I think that's the most ever in A and M. So I, you know, how do you replace that and this. That's something. Billy Lucci, when he was he last. I know he can't say anything about Texas because he's so biased.
Cousin Shane
Right.
SEC Mike
But that's what he was saying about Texas. This time last year, man, they just had. I don't know if it was 10. I think it was. I think it was like 11 or 12. They just had so many draft picks. Can you replicate that, or are you bound to take a step back? So that is. That's a big question for A and M, but Coach Echo says, hey, they may have just as many draft picks this year.
Pete Golding
Jerry Hamilton, on Texas football last year, before the season, you said you had
Cousin Shane
11, 12 NFL draft picks, draft eligible on the team, and you were spot on.
Pete Golding
So I was going to ask, what's your number this year going into the season?
SEC Mike
Yeah, we'll see.
John Sumrall
We'll see. I feel good about our roster. I think we have an opportunity, if things go the right way, to get into that 10 range again. You know, we should be living in the 8 to 10 world, and we'll see how some of these guys develop. I think one of the challenges this year, I'm not dodging your question, but last year we had a lot of guys who played for Texas A and M the year before. I think this year we're projecting some guys that we haven't really gone to battle with yet. And so I think it leaves it a little bit open for a little bit more uncertainty.
SEC Mike
So he's optimistic, but not all the way up.
Cousin Shane
There we go, dude. Jimbo rebuilt Elko reloads and he's been working on those lats. I don't know if you saw, but those are pretty steep.
SEC Mike
I, it had to been the suit, right? Because I was seeing that, I was like, damn, is he lifting weights these days?
Cousin Shane
I thought it was balls there for a second, you know.
SEC Mike
Now he let something else. You know, I get, I get maybe this is not, you know, I don't know, this technically news because they've, they have made it official, Shane. Where like players could play for five years now.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
Because someone asked him about Marcel last year and he said, whoa, buddy, Marcel's got two years left because of this new five year. So. And also, I don't know if you've seen it, but that's kind of how they're trying to clarify all this. It's because some people were saying we'll do players one through five. So if you're first a true freshman, you're a one. Yeah, that's stupid. So they, they're gonna, they're gonna go freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and then fifth year. So that's how we'll kind of clarify all that. But because of the fifth year, Marcel Reed's got multiple years to play. But he did note that, hey, this is the first time ever A and M is going to play five road SEC games, of course, because of the nine game schedule. So it helps to have a quarterback that has started a, a full season. And I, I think he's 100% right. You know, if you're throwing in a first year starter there, that's quite the, the daunting task. So, you know, if, if nothing else, I just never thought of it quite like that. But that, that, that is something that should help A and M. Yeah.
Cousin Shane
And, and, and that's why, you know, you, when you're looking at some of these September, I mean, you got it up here. Arizona State and lsu. Sneaky Kentucky, which we, we'll talk about Th. This is typical of kind of those SEC programs that thought they have arrived, right. They, they stumble out of the gates early. I, I feel like the ceiling has been pushed because you've got so much experience, especially with that quarterback. So yeah, Reads Reed's in for a prove it year. And, and he, he, he hates the, I mean he sees the conversation. The kids see it, man. They, they know where the QB ranks are and everybody wants to talk about the other guy in Texas or the other guy in Oklahoma. You know, he wants to be included with those conversations and he quickly can be, especially if they start out strong this year.
SEC Mike
Of all the Arch banding bread and sores be discussion, Shane, there's only one lone star quarterback that's led his team to the playoff and it's Marcel Reed. You know that's right. Yes, of course, Arch played in one, but that was a Quinn Ewers year. You know what?
Cousin Shane
Yeah, we don't count that one. Yeah, he should have played, though. Probably should have got in there a little bit.
SEC Mike
Let's see. Okay, so now we got the boring Shane. Oh, man, did I have to stretch for DeBoer? But again, these were interesting comments on the quarterback. So, you know, going into it, everybody thought it was going to be, you know, the young player, but maybe, maybe old Austin Mac, they both got elite skills. Keelan Russell, Austin Mac. Who's it going to be, Deborah? The quarterback room, obviously. Big question this offseason. How is it looking for you right now?
DSW and RO Brand Spokesperson
And just having that competition between those two guys.
Kaylin DeBoer
Yeah, between Austin Mack and Keelan Russell. Two guys that we have a lot of confidence in. They both have a lot of similarities. I think probably when you look at their effectiveness as a passer, I think things that they don't have are just the number of reps in game experiences. And so there's a lot of things that are similar about them. Their styles are going to be a little different. Right. You got six. At least six.
Interviewer
Six.
Kaylin DeBoer
And you know, Keelan's not short. He's six, three. So they're both taller quarterbacks. Austin, probably a guy who knows the offense inside and out. We're trying to make sure he doesn't make it and overthink things. Not that he is, but just making sure that he keeps it simple. Like. Like he can and execute, play fast with his teammates. And Keelan and I think has come a long ways, you know, him knowing and he's made the comment him knowing what he knows now compared to what he knew a year ago. And that's expected, you know, that's expected from both ends of it and what you. What you see in each guy.
SEC Mike
All right, Shane, they. They can both throw the ball. They're both pretty tall. They know the system, but they don't want to know it too well.
Cousin Shane
Love long walks on the beach,
SEC Mike
But hey, I kid. But again, what does Alabama do with this coaching staff and even going back to their previous stops, they develop quarterbacks.
Cousin Shane
Yep.
SEC Mike
But the only thing here, Shane, again, it's a good problem to have, right? If you got two good quarterbacks, could there be any kind of division, though? You know what I mean? I mean, sometimes, sometimes you pick the wrong guy and then you get some, some division in the locker room. And I have no clue. I'm not saying that's. That's a problem or anything, but that. That could be.
Cousin Shane
Here's the thing, man. Can we just chalk up Kaylin DeBoer sucks at the microphone, right? I remember after that Florida State game and he came out and he was talking, I was like, what is this guy? You know, he's just. He's just not that guy. He is. He is not Nick Saban. He's not going to come out with some, some great quotes that you can, you know, put in a locker room somewhere. That's just not who he is. But what he does do, Mike, is produce phenomenal quarterbacks. So I have no doubt in my mind that Alabama is going to be okay in that department. And I look at it like a true competition. I feel like, I feel me personally, that Mack was the guy. I. I just. That was what was intended. That's how it was supposed to go. But now we got this young cat, killed it in the spring game, pushing him for everything he's got. And what's wrong with having a serious quarterback competition in Tuscaloosa? We've seen it. It works. So I'm trusting the process here. I think Kaylin Deborah will be fine in that quarterback room.
SEC Mike
You know, I think Deborah would do well. Shane, if he just let Stephen up.
Cousin Shane
He's a spokesperson shout out showing up for them boys in Tuscaloosa. Stephen up. Roll Tide.
SEC Mike
I tell you, he'd be far more entertaining. Stephen up. We appreciate you, buddy. Watch out for the back attack or the Russell. Russell. Thanks for all the coverage, Cousins. Thank you.
Cousin Shane
Yeah, thank you, cuz.
SEC Mike
Then we got. I think yo, Geez Louise in the action shape. Here's my donation. Don't tell the ncaa, Robo. Oh yeah, Jesus got suspended for that one. You know what put it toward the
Cousin Shane
flat
SEC Mike
and then last one from deboring. Yeah, I thought this was a little noteworthy, you know, because that there he. He get asked a lot of questions about you can't run the ball. Lacking physicality. And he for a minute shape for just a split hair. If you pay attention here, he shows some personality. He's like, hey, we didn't win by accident now. Hey, Coach Lindsey Bonner Waka out of Montgomery.
Cousin Shane
Kind of picking up, backing off that
SEC Mike
first question about the physicality.
Cousin Shane
What do you say to the naysayers
SEC Mike
and maybe also to people that say
Cousin Shane
Alabama is not the standard in the SEC anymore? What do you say to those people to silence them and say, you know, we are still the standard here?
Kaylin DeBoer
Well, I mean, for us and this team this year, we have to go out and we have to get the job done. We got to go out and prove it. I think you can look back to last year, and you don't just accidentally win seven out of eight games in the league, go to a conference championship, win a playoff game on the road without having a resiliency of toughness, both mental and physical toughness about you. But we understand also that there's an expectation that is different at Alabama, and we signed up for that. We're all about that. And we want to continue to. To push to make sure that we reach the expectations that we have, first of all, internally. And I think that we will help everyone else. That is the die hards and. And our fan base appreciate what these guys are doing, the work they're putting in, because they are definitely doing that. These are. These are guys that have high character, that want it bad, that want to continue to carry on the tradition of the program here at Alabama.
SEC Mike
We didn't whoop everybody's ass by mistake, which I really did. What's. After they lost to Florida State. You know what?
Cousin Shane
Yeah, I just. Two things real quick. Just shave it. Deborah, if you're listening, give up. That shit's gave up on you a long time ago. Second, you know, I think about after media days, who was the most, I don't know, kind of overlooked, put down belittled football teams at media days, and leading the pack was the Alabama Crimson Tide, the team that majority of my life has kicked everyone's ass. So I. I know that that's a sleeping giant that can wake up at any second now, and it could be this year. So I just. I don't know, disrespect that. That is ringing through the. That locker room. And I. I'd never count the Tide out, Mike.
SEC Mike
If they had any heart, they have any gut. Shane.
Cousin Shane
Mm.
SEC Mike
They're gonna be taking all this garbage we're spewing at them, and it's gonna motivate them to whoop some ass, don't you think? This season, bottle it up.
Cousin Shane
Use it. Take a little nugget of Kirby Smart. You better believe he's plastered everything down there. They'll be all kinds of conversations. Hell, they may have us on loop down there somewhere. Do the same, man. Do the same. This is a good, good football team. That is one of those. We don't know how high the ceiling is. We don't really know how low the floor is, but if the stars align, ladies, Lux, on your side. Alabama could be dancing in the playoffs again. I fully. I fully believe in it, but I didn't believe Kaylin when he's talking at the mic because he sucks at it.
SEC Mike
So let me ask you this.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
Do you think in the history of SEC media days, of course we haven't been going to every single one of them like Paul, but yeah, you know, from what we can recall. Can you ever recall a media days where we got Alabama and then they're like dead last? I mean, I put them last here on, on this for a reason.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
Because, you know, they got outshined by Ole Miss, by Florida, by A and M. You know, has there. Have they ever been an afterthought on the day they've gone quite like. Like they were this year?
Cousin Shane
Not quite like they've done this year? You know, last year was close, but it. It was still, I think year three, we were all new coach, not Nick Saban, so it was a bigger deal. It got that kind of wore off a little bit in his second year. But no, this. This is.
Julian Barnes
This is.
Cousin Shane
It's crazy. I mean, I appreciate the brisket. They still bring out the best food when Alabama's in town, so I did like that. But, you know, I don't. I don't think Kaylin needed to come in here and win anything. Right? He just needed. He didn't need to say something stupid. He just, you know, run the, the car wash, get home and. And get to work. This is, you know, that's. That's how this conversation changes, Mike. When we end this season, let's say they make the playoffs. So then we look back, we say, okay, shitty. Kaylin DeBoer has been to the playoffs twice since he's been down here in three years. You know what? Maybe we're wrong. Maybe he is a good coach because this is his team in year three.
SEC Mike
Well, you know who's a good cousin?
Cousin Shane
Jim? The tag artist.
SEC Mike
Dr. Pepper announced they will pay.
Cousin Shane
Yeah.
SEC Mike
A rusty old water tower near OU campus to replicate Fansville water tower. Norman is now Fansville Boss is the sheriff Boomer. How about that, Shane? I didn't see that, dude. That's. That's real news.
Cousin Shane
I did see that. That is real new. You kidding? I got Jim, in my feed, man, he. I know everything is going over Norman
SEC Mike
and then shout out fatal. I mean, oh, this is a wild comment. As a Missouri fan, I'm excited to see more aerodynamic hardy. He's going to be shooting through every chance.
Cousin Shane
Yeah, too soon. Too soon.
SEC Mike
Hey, he. He paid. So I read the comment, but I. That was pretty wild. Was it?
Cousin Shane
But we do have limits, Mike. We do have limits. That was flirting with it right on the edge here.
SEC Mike
All right, buddy. So, hey, that's all I got on this episode. You got anything else before we hop off here?
Cousin Shane
No, no. Thank you again for the recap. Got a big one tomorrow for you and I appreciate all the cousins gathering. The time is paying off, man. We are almost. We're one month, one month away. College football action kids are reporting next week. The NCAA still sucks. Belema can kiss my ass. I think that's it, Dan. Go to hell. Is there anybody else, Mike? I think I'm all on the list there.
SEC Mike
You said a month. I'll be about done with the SEC media days interviews by then, hopefully.
Cousin Shane
It's just gonna keep getting bigger and bigger. Have you seen sunlight in a few days? Of course. You know, I. I've told you, man, it's been raining here every day, and it's weird.
SEC Mike
It's weird.
Julian Barnes
I. I'm.
Cousin Shane
I'm not sun saying again that you know somebody, that the government's involved. But the older I get, I think the more my brother's on to something. Mike, the cloud seating is really working. I'd love to see some sunshine. It's a little hard to golf, you know, when it's raining every day.
SEC Mike
Well, hey, it hasn't been raining here, so I'm about to go mow the yard, but after that, I'll get back to editing these videos. Until then, we'll catch you on the next one.
Cousin Shane
All right, See you guys. Go balls.
SEC Mike
Hey, buddy, this beer's for you.
Pete Golding
Mike and cousin Shane.

Normally in these ads, you expect somebody to ask you to buy something. But this is something different. I'm Julian Barnes and I'm a reporter for the New York Times. I'm a national security reporter, and that means I'm reporting on military operations. These are fast paced, quickly moving situations. What exactly is happening on the ground is often shrouded in mystery. But we turn to trusted sources, satellite imagery and expertise built up over years in order to ferret out the facts that wouldn't otherwise come to light. I'm here to ask you to seek out a news source that does firsthand fact based reporting. If it's your local paper, great. If it's the times, thank you. Because where you go for your information matters.
