Not much. It's good to be here and good talking with you guys. And frankly, that's the, the best part of media days to me is getting to like, hang out with the other media. Interviews can be fine and, but getting to see. It's like back to school. It's like seeing your buddies after the summer. And so great to see you guys.

Enjoy the sunlight while you have it, man. And, and I feel like, brother, I don't know about you, but I say it every year. But going to a nine game SEC schedule and I know the coaches are bitching and complaining about it, but I think it's teed up to be one of the most special times of the year. Man, this. I feel like this season alone may be the greatest year we've ever seen of college football.

For all the complaints and things that people don't like. And I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Like, I get it. Like, it's changed people. Sometimes change is bad, sometimes it's good. College football is in a very popular place right now. I mean, people really are enjoying it. Like, I even go back to, like, what I know. So my family, you know, from Minnesota and not a prime college football market, but my parents, ever since I started covering Alabama, they started watching a lot and they're hooked on it. My mom has become a big Alabama fan and like, she can't watch it sometimes because it's so stressful. And so like, these are not old traditionalists in the sport, but once you start seeing the product, yeah, I mean, there's turnover, there's change, but, like, the games are great, there's some phenomenal athletes. I'm optimistic about its future despite all the chaos. I mean, yes, it'd be nice to get some of these things figured out, but the product is really in a good spot.

Well, okay, well, natural follow up. How does your mom feel about Kaylin Dvoris? Is he the man for the job? What does she think?

Nick Kelly
That's a good question. I haven't asked her recently, but. So my, my wife is also a big Alameda fan. I have a better idea of her thoughts on it. I think that they, they want it to work. I think people like Calen Deboer I think it's a. They want to support him. And so if he can win, if he can achieve things, like, they're behind him. But of course, if he can't to the extent that they want eventually, then, yeah, it gets really toxic. And they're, they're the extremists. Like, there aren't any fan base that maybe aren't thrilled with some of the results. No doubt. But I think that people like him, I mean, that's the thing. You won't find me people who say, like, oh, man, I hate Kalyn DeBoer. Like, there aren't people. He doesn't, he doesn't create enemies by his personality like people like this guy. But whether that means winning football games to the level the Alabama fans expect at a. But at a bit unrealistic level, we'll see. So I think that that's probably the fairest temperature is people are willing to support him, but again, they pressure's there and they need to see results.

You know, we're going into a couple of these camps with a real quarterback competition. It seems like every time the Tide comes up, it's like, well, yeah, I mean, it's a competition, but quote, unquote, we know who's going to be the guy. Is this thing closer than, you know, the outside people are thinking?

Nick Kelly
I think so. I mean, if the people's choice, I think, would be Keelan Russell, for sure. But the people aren't making the decision. This isn't a poll where, you know, hey, it's not like the Pro bowl or whatever. Yeah, they're not, they're not taking input from those folks. And I agree that. I think that Keelan Russell has the highest ceiling. It's the most exciting. He's the highest rated recruit in program history per 247. So, yeah, I mean, of course you'd like to get him on the field and think he can do some special things. But in terms of what I've heard in my interpretation of the situation, it's very much neck and neck, and I would not be shocked. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but if a guy doesn't separate through the fall, there's a chance, you see both Game one, maybe they pick a guy for the Western or not Western, Kentucky, the Kentucky game in week two. So again, I think Kaylan Voor would like to have a guy emerge by maybe like two weeks out, two weeks into camp or so, but I don't think it's impossible they would play both until one starts to separate.

So I've been calling him four lost DeBoer. How does the conversation shift if he loses four games, let's say eight and four this year?

Well, that's. That's the thing with the new extension. Like, they need this to work. I mean, I. I think we think of it's monopoly money or just fake money that they're throwing around. But that buyout would be 60, 70, somewhere around there. Million dollars by that point. It changes every day, so I can't give you the exact number, but yeah, I mean, that's. That's a lot of money. And yeah, Texas A and M paid Jimbo Fisher around that to leave, but there's a lot of oil money that the Aggies can access and still you don't. That you don't want to be doing that. And I think more than anything, one thing I've been told about the leadership, not just athletics, but for the university, the university system, they're big on fiscal responsibility and having to pay a coach, not to coach for you that much money. I just. Basically, you can't rule anything out. But I would say it's highly unlikely that he would just get fired without cause and that they would want to pay that money. It's basically, they need it to work and it could get so toxic. Maybe he would decide to go somewhere else if that happened. But just purely paying that amount of money, I just don't see it. about going somewhere else. I mean, that was a hot topic there for a little bit last year. How close was that conversation, you think it was real?

Nick Kelly
Michigan more so than Penn State? I mean, the Penn State stuff was certainly talked about, but Michigan wanted him bad. I mean, that's not. I don't know. That's not just rumor. Like I heard from multiple people in multiple places in the industry, like, that was legitimate, like Michigan. If Caleb DeBoer loses to Oklahoma, there's no telling what happens. I'm not saying he takes it, but he was not going to pull Lane Kiffin. He was not going to leave while his team is still playing. And so in that first half of that Oklahoma game where they were down, what, 17? Nothing. I was like, oh, man, we might be covering a coaching search. So didn't happen. He's still at Alabama, but yeah, I mean, that was legitimate interest. I never got the sense of how real it was on Kalen's side, but I think there are people in the industry that were saying that he should seriously consider it. Then again, Michigan has got a lot of things going on there. So in terms of stability, maybe not what you want to go into, but. But I think he really was pursued. But I've never gotten a good sense as to what would have happened from his perspective had he been available when they still wanted a coach.

It's just so wild to me to say, like, forget the names for a second. I said if I told you a coach would follow Nick Saban and, you know, be right there at the door trying to get him playoff year one, in the playoffs, year two, you know, I would say, hell, they've. They hit a home run. And yet we're sitting here two days in immediate days. And in Alabama, I have never not talked about Alabama more than I have this season. It blows my mind right now, which

to me isn't the worst spot to be in because it's kind of nice when, from a coaching perspective when you could be like, hey, no one's talking about you. No one believes in you. Like, they don't have to make that up. I mean, that's. They're not being picked to win the whole thing, which is a difficult spot to be in. I mean, Sark is having to fight against that if they're picked as the team to win it all. So I don't think that's the worst spot to be in. But, yeah, it is weird. It's a little unnerving when Alabama is not quite as central as they were for so many years, but you can

see how the other half lives, you know?

Yeah, exactly. Well, you say that, but remember, I went to Missouri and I covered Missouri, so I definitely saw how the other half lives. But no, and to your point about Kalin, too, it's so fascinating, the national discourse around him versus the if you called up someone in Tuscaloosa or someone in McCalla, Alabama, kind of thing, like, their opinion on is remarkable. That I think he could get a lot of jobs and he is definitely in the top half. I mean, you'll have different folks say he's as high as number two or he's, you know, he's eight or whatever you want. But I think it's pretty safe to say he's in the top half of the coaches in the SEC and he's won a lot of big games. But I think the biggest thing, in my opinion, that he could do to, I guess, take the edge off a little bit is win the Games you're supposed to win because that's what Nick Saban did for so long, which is pretty rare. Like, that's not easy to do. But if you win those games and you don't get blown out, those two things are the hardest for Alabama fans to digest. They would tell you it's national championship or bust, right? But realistically, they're not comfortable with getting blown out, and they're not comfortable losing games they're not supposed to lose. So if he can. If he can do that, to me, that is improvement this year, whether they make a playoff run or not.

And that was his specialty last year.

Toward the end, man, they were. They were just. It felt kind of like this. I don't want to say Cart. That was. You know, the wheels were falling off,

but just felt like you're holding together, wasn't it?

Nick Kelly
Guys were banged up. I mean, that's the problem when Ty was hurt and he was banged up like, he was so much of their offense, so that when he couldn't make some magic happen, they didn't have the running game to turn to. Like, there was so much on Ty Simpson's shoulders last year that I think some people realize it, but I don't know that everyone does, because when you don't have a running game as a quarterback, guys can just tee off or they can just play coverage. Like, that's an awful place to be. So it was impressive what he did and the fact he got so beat up toward the end of the year, and it just wasn't a good combination for the offense.

So you talked about winning the games you're supposed to, not getting blown out. But can I add one other one that I think Alabama fans would agree with? Fair or not, he's got to shed the finesse label. Can Alabama fans live with a soft program? I don't think they can, no.

Nick Kelly
I think that that is, at least from a narrative perspective, something that I think he's fighting against because a lot of fans view him as this west coast guy, which, yeah, he spent some time out there, but he's from the Midwest first off. But, yeah, I think that having a physical running game and a physical run defense would go a long way toward A, winning and B, being able to sleep better at night. For Alabama fans, because they want joyless murder ball, that's what they're used to. And so when they're not seeing that or they're not feeling feeling that, I mean, you're not going to go back to the offense that they had with Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, like, you're not seeing that, but I think just some more physical running. And I'm telling you guys, E.J. crowell, the freshman running back, watch out. I mean, he's a freshman, so you can't get ahead of yourself too much. But you talk about a guy that I've heard literally, from people on the defensive staff for Alabama talk about he could be pretty special. He's coming back from an injury from the spring, but he could really solve a lot of the running game if they can get some good blocking up front.

I'm not as down on Alabama as some other people I know, and I think the only hang up for me in making that playoff run is not the running game, it's that offensive line. So can you. Can you talk me off the ledge? Can you let me know that we're going to be all right with the. With the big uglies down there?

I'll try to hold you on the edge of the ledge. I can't. I can't quite tell you it's going to be better.

To me, it's still the biggest area of concern, I think, a. Because you just have a lot of improvements, so you can't. Until I see it, I'm not going to believe it quite yet. Doesn't mean it can't happen. I just. I don't feel confident in something I haven't seen before. Also, just based on what you hear, like, I mean, yeah, how do guys gel together? How does a guy like Javen James, who at Mississippi State, like, if he's probably the top contender right now for right tackle, like, how is that going to go? And then you look at Rayson Delgatti, who they like at center, but he's undersized, and he played for Cal Poly last year. He could be fine. He could be good. I mean, they had Josh Cuevas at tight end, who was a Cal Poly guy originally, and he was phenomenal for them. And when they didn't have him, they really missed him on offense. So I'm not saying that can't translate, but Josh Cuevas also went from Cal Poly to Washington to Alabama. The center is going from Cal Poly to the sec. So we'll see how that translates. I like a few pieces there. I mean, Jackson Lloyd, Michael Carroll. I've been hearing good things about it before they even got to campus. I remember Michael Carroll. I was watching a practice rep. We don't see much practice, but what I did see there was something he didn't do. Right. Last year as a freshman, the old line coach made him go back and do it again. They weren't going against the defense. They were just kind of walkthrough, ish type drills. He pulls and he takes this poor walk on and plants him in the ground. So like, that's the kind of like nasty mentality he's got. So I, I think he could be a really special player for them at guard. But you kind of. Yeah, you just don't know quite what they're going to have otherwise. And so I just can't speak with confidence right now.

Does what Lane Kiffin does at lsu, does that. Will that be judged at Alabama? Because I remember a lot of fans were in on Kiffin and I know Alabama didn't even consider Kiffin and I'm not saying they should have, but could DeBoer be judged against that? Like, let's say LSU does something magical this year.

Nick Kelly
Maybe. I don't think it's like a direct comp, but of course, yeah, any program that brings a new coach in and then automatically succeeds right away, that's pressure on everybody. I mean, Kurt Schenetti, as much fun as that was to see for us in the, you know, in the media or just people who are fans of the sport, like, it's awesome that he was able to revive Indiana.

Like, and I didn't realize about a quarter of the media in college football, they apparently all went to Indiana.

It's got a big alumni base, that's for sure. But actually, they do actually have a good J school, I think. But no, to answer your question about Lane Kiffin, I think it is tough because, yeah, there are some Bama fans that really like him and would have wanted him to coach. But to your point, I can confirm that was never going to happen. I'll put it this way, his history and the knowledge of people have of him from his time in Tuscaloosa will preclude him from being hired as the Alabama coach. I'll leave it at that. But yeah, it's always tough when a rival at that in lsu, if they succeed. But then again, I mean, I was telling you off the air, Shane, like I go so back and forth about LSU because I think they're either going to be amazing or just a fraud. And I'm not sure where that's going to be because they have so much talent that like, you might not actually have to coach that well and they do have good coaches. But then like when there's all this pressure and expectation, it's Hard to meet that sometimes.

So I feel like there's a few of those teams in this league. You know, it's like, man, they could be really good or they could fall flat on their face. But I do want to talk, talking about rivalries. Goal is here today and. And I think. What do you say? Implemented Iron bowl session in the practice where they played Dixieland Delight. Trying to make that game. They're tired of losing to Alabama. So what do you think about that hire over there?

Nick Kelly
I think it's pretty good. I mean, they have had a history of, hey, you beat Alabama before, we'll hire you. Didn't work out for Hugh Freeze, but Alex Golish, I guess I don't know if this is better or worse. He's given Alabama problems and he beat him. As you know, Tennessee's OC and they had that game, what was that in 2023, where Nick Saban walked off the field looking all disheveled from the rain and they barely beat usf. And then even I remember the day they dedicated Saban Field. Goelish took South Florida to Bryant Denny and that game was. It ended up like 42, 14 or something like that, but it was like a two, three point game going to the fourth quarter. So he's given Alabama problems. And at this point it's. I mean, it's hard to beat any team for that many times in a row. And if they can get some competent quarterback play, I think that could finally do it. But yeah, they certainly need to get back in the win column because Alabama didn't just win in football this year, they won. They beat Auburn in just about everything. And Auburn's down right now, so they need. They want to get back up. And it's bound to happen at some point.

Has that rivalry. Rivalry. I'm always challenged to say that. Has it lost any luster in the state or is it still as hot as ever?

Nick Kelly
It's still as hot as ever. It doesn't matter how good they are. And that sounds cliche, but I go to church with Auburn fans. I live in a community with Auburn fans. And like I said, I'm married to an Alabama fan. I mean, trust me when I say there's no love lost. Like, I'll put it to you this way. So my wife, Elizabeth, sweet as can be, you won't hear her say a bad thing about most people. But when I bring up Cam Newton, I'm just like, who are you? So there's no love lost all these years later.

Well, I Want to ask about Ryan Williams? You know, this is a guy that was, everybody was talking about this time last year. Not a lot of, not a lot of news from him this season. Is this a big year for him? Is this a year that they're really going to highlight him on that offense?

Nick Kelly
I think so because he's an older guy, which is crazy at this point because it feels like just yesterday we were talking about this guy being the 17 year old receiver, but he's been in the offense for two years. They don't have a lot of experienced guys on offense and so I wouldn't surprise me if he's a captain this year. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it wouldn't shock me. He's supposed to be here. So he's also, I think mature, he's gotten bigger. I mean he's engaged and you know, just all these different things happen in his life. And I do think that like I'm not ruling him out. I think that people are a little down on him. And yeah, I mean he's got to get the drops under control. But I've talked to multiple NFL types that still love the guy like, hey, as long as he can get his drops taken care of or minimized, like he can still be a first round pick type. So and again, even if it doesn't happen this year, he still has more time. He's gonna be a junior, so he's still got more time. But I still think that having the pressure off him is going to help a ton because think about going to his sophomore year. You go, I mean he was literally on the COVID of the video game. He's got a Nike deal. Like he's got all these things going on and this guy is 18 years old. I don't know how I would have handled that at 18 years old, much less how I'd handle it 28. So I think that having the little bit of that pressure off isn't the worst thing. Just like in the same way it's not the worst thing for Alabama. So I'm not, I'm not predicting he's going to be an all world receiver, but he's still got the ability and I'm just not ruling out. I don't think it's a continued downward trend necessarily.

Enjoy the sunlight while you have it, man. And, and I feel like, brother, I don't know about you, but I say it every year. But going to a nine game SEC schedule and I know the coaches are bitching and complaining about it, but I think it's teed up to be one of the most special times of the year. Man, this. I feel like this season alone may be the greatest year we've ever seen of college football.

For all the complaints and things that people don't like. And I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Like, I get it. Like, it's changed people. Sometimes change is bad, sometimes it's good. College football is in a very popular place right now. I mean, people really are enjoying it. Like, I even go back to, like, what I know. So my family, you know, from Minnesota and not a prime college football market, but my parents, ever since I started covering Alabama, they started watching a lot and they're hooked on it. My mom has become a big Alabama fan and like, she can't watch it sometimes because it's so stressful. And so like, these are not old traditionalists in the sport, but once you start seeing the product, yeah, I mean, there's turnover, there's change, but, like, the games are great, there's some phenomenal athletes. I'm optimistic about its future despite all the chaos. I mean, yes, it'd be nice to get some of these things figured out, but the product is really in a good spot.

Well, okay, well, natural follow up. How does your mom feel about Kaylin Dvoris? Is he the man for the job? What does she think?

Nick Kelly
That's a good question. I haven't asked her recently, but. So my, my wife is also a big Alameda fan. I have a better idea of her thoughts on it. I think that they, they want it to work. I think people like Calen Deboer I think it's a. They want to support him. And so if he can win, if he can achieve things, like, they're behind him. But of course, if he can't to the extent that they want eventually, then, yeah, it gets really toxic. And they're, they're the extremists. Like, there aren't any fan base that maybe aren't thrilled with some of the results. No doubt. But I think that people like him, I mean, that's the thing. You won't find me people who say, like, oh, man, I hate Kalyn DeBoer. Like, there aren't people. He doesn't, he doesn't create enemies by his personality like people like this guy. But whether that means winning football games to the level the Alabama fans expect at a. But at a bit unrealistic level, we'll see. So I think that that's probably the fairest temperature is people are willing to support him, but again, they pressure's there and they need to see results.

You know, we're going into a couple of these camps with a real quarterback competition. It seems like every time the Tide comes up, it's like, well, yeah, I mean, it's a competition, but quote, unquote, we know who's going to be the guy. Is this thing closer than, you know, the outside people are thinking?

Nick Kelly
I think so. I mean, if the people's choice, I think, would be Keelan Russell, for sure. But the people aren't making the decision. This isn't a poll where, you know, hey, it's not like the Pro bowl or whatever. Yeah, they're not, they're not taking input from those folks. And I agree that. I think that Keelan Russell has the highest ceiling. It's the most exciting. He's the highest rated recruit in program history per 247. So, yeah, I mean, of course you'd like to get him on the field and think he can do some special things. But in terms of what I've heard in my interpretation of the situation, it's very much neck and neck, and I would not be shocked. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but if a guy doesn't separate through the fall, there's a chance, you see both Game one, maybe they pick a guy for the Western or not Western, Kentucky, the Kentucky game in week two. So again, I think Kaylan Voor would like to have a guy emerge by maybe like two weeks out, two weeks into camp or so, but I don't think it's impossible they would play both until one starts to separate.

Well, that's. That's the thing with the new extension. Like, they need this to work. I mean, I. I think we think of it's monopoly money or just fake money that they're throwing around. But that buyout would be 60, 70, somewhere around there. Million dollars by that point. It changes every day, so I can't give you the exact number, but yeah, I mean, that's. That's a lot of money. And yeah, Texas A and M paid Jimbo Fisher around that to leave, but there's a lot of oil money that the Aggies can access and still you don't. That you don't want to be doing that. And I think more than anything, one thing I've been told about the leadership, not just athletics, but for the university, the university system, they're big on fiscal responsibility and having to pay a coach, not to coach for you that much money. I just. Basically, you can't rule anything out. But I would say it's highly unlikely that he would just get fired without cause and that they would want to pay that money. It's basically, they need it to work and it could get so toxic. Maybe he would decide to go somewhere else if that happened. But just purely paying that amount of money, I just don't see it. about going somewhere else. I mean, that was a hot topic there for a little bit last year. How close was that conversation, you think it was real?

Nick Kelly
Michigan more so than Penn State? I mean, the Penn State stuff was certainly talked about, but Michigan wanted him bad. I mean, that's not. I don't know. That's not just rumor. Like I heard from multiple people in multiple places in the industry, like, that was legitimate, like Michigan. If Caleb DeBoer loses to Oklahoma, there's no telling what happens. I'm not saying he takes it, but he was not going to pull Lane Kiffin. He was not going to leave while his team is still playing. And so in that first half of that Oklahoma game where they were down, what, 17? Nothing. I was like, oh, man, we might be covering a coaching search. So didn't happen. He's still at Alabama, but yeah, I mean, that was legitimate interest. I never got the sense of how real it was on Kalen's side, but I think there are people in the industry that were saying that he should seriously consider it. Then again, Michigan has got a lot of things going on there. So in terms of stability, maybe not what you want to go into, but. But I think he really was pursued. But I've never gotten a good sense as to what would have happened from his perspective had he been available when they still wanted a coach.

It's just so wild to me to say, like, forget the names for a second. I said if I told you a coach would follow Nick Saban and, you know, be right there at the door trying to get him playoff year one, in the playoffs, year two, you know, I would say, hell, they've. They hit a home run. And yet we're sitting here two days in immediate days. And in Alabama, I have never not talked about Alabama more than I have this season. It blows my mind right now, which

to me isn't the worst spot to be in because it's kind of nice when, from a coaching perspective when you could be like, hey, no one's talking about you. No one believes in you. Like, they don't have to make that up. I mean, that's. They're not being picked to win the whole thing, which is a difficult spot to be in. I mean, Sark is having to fight against that if they're picked as the team to win it all. So I don't think that's the worst spot to be in. But, yeah, it is weird. It's a little unnerving when Alabama is not quite as central as they were for so many years, but you can

see how the other half lives, you know?

Yeah, exactly. Well, you say that, but remember, I went to Missouri and I covered Missouri, so I definitely saw how the other half lives. But no, and to your point about Kalin, too, it's so fascinating, the national discourse around him versus the if you called up someone in Tuscaloosa or someone in McCalla, Alabama, kind of thing, like, their opinion on is remarkable. That I think he could get a lot of jobs and he is definitely in the top half. I mean, you'll have different folks say he's as high as number two or he's, you know, he's eight or whatever you want. But I think it's pretty safe to say he's in the top half of the coaches in the SEC and he's won a lot of big games. But I think the biggest thing, in my opinion, that he could do to, I guess, take the edge off a little bit is win the Games you're supposed to win because that's what Nick Saban did for so long, which is pretty rare. Like, that's not easy to do. But if you win those games and you don't get blown out, those two things are the hardest for Alabama fans to digest. They would tell you it's national championship or bust, right? But realistically, they're not comfortable with getting blown out, and they're not comfortable losing games they're not supposed to lose. So if he can. If he can do that, to me, that is improvement this year, whether they make a playoff run or not.

Toward the end, man, they were. They were just. It felt kind of like this. I don't want to say Cart. That was. You know, the wheels were falling off,

but just felt like you're holding together, wasn't it?

Nick Kelly
Guys were banged up. I mean, that's the problem when Ty was hurt and he was banged up like, he was so much of their offense, so that when he couldn't make some magic happen, they didn't have the running game to turn to. Like, there was so much on Ty Simpson's shoulders last year that I think some people realize it, but I don't know that everyone does, because when you don't have a running game as a quarterback, guys can just tee off or they can just play coverage. Like, that's an awful place to be. So it was impressive what he did and the fact he got so beat up toward the end of the year, and it just wasn't a good combination for the offense.

So you talked about winning the games you're supposed to, not getting blown out. But can I add one other one that I think Alabama fans would agree with? Fair or not, he's got to shed the finesse label. Can Alabama fans live with a soft program? I don't think they can, no.

Nick Kelly
I think that that is, at least from a narrative perspective, something that I think he's fighting against because a lot of fans view him as this west coast guy, which, yeah, he spent some time out there, but he's from the Midwest first off. But, yeah, I think that having a physical running game and a physical run defense would go a long way toward A, winning and B, being able to sleep better at night. For Alabama fans, because they want joyless murder ball, that's what they're used to. And so when they're not seeing that or they're not feeling feeling that, I mean, you're not going to go back to the offense that they had with Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, like, you're not seeing that, but I think just some more physical running. And I'm telling you guys, E.J. crowell, the freshman running back, watch out. I mean, he's a freshman, so you can't get ahead of yourself too much. But you talk about a guy that I've heard literally, from people on the defensive staff for Alabama talk about he could be pretty special. He's coming back from an injury from the spring, but he could really solve a lot of the running game if they can get some good blocking up front.

I'm not as down on Alabama as some other people I know, and I think the only hang up for me in making that playoff run is not the running game, it's that offensive line. So can you. Can you talk me off the ledge? Can you let me know that we're going to be all right with the. With the big uglies down there?

I'll try to hold you on the edge of the ledge. I can't. I can't quite tell you it's going to be better.

To me, it's still the biggest area of concern, I think, a. Because you just have a lot of improvements, so you can't. Until I see it, I'm not going to believe it quite yet. Doesn't mean it can't happen. I just. I don't feel confident in something I haven't seen before. Also, just based on what you hear, like, I mean, yeah, how do guys gel together? How does a guy like Javen James, who at Mississippi State, like, if he's probably the top contender right now for right tackle, like, how is that going to go? And then you look at Rayson Delgatti, who they like at center, but he's undersized, and he played for Cal Poly last year. He could be fine. He could be good. I mean, they had Josh Cuevas at tight end, who was a Cal Poly guy originally, and he was phenomenal for them. And when they didn't have him, they really missed him on offense. So I'm not saying that can't translate, but Josh Cuevas also went from Cal Poly to Washington to Alabama. The center is going from Cal Poly to the sec. So we'll see how that translates. I like a few pieces there. I mean, Jackson Lloyd, Michael Carroll. I've been hearing good things about it before they even got to campus. I remember Michael Carroll. I was watching a practice rep. We don't see much practice, but what I did see there was something he didn't do. Right. Last year as a freshman, the old line coach made him go back and do it again. They weren't going against the defense. They were just kind of walkthrough, ish type drills. He pulls and he takes this poor walk on and plants him in the ground. So like, that's the kind of like nasty mentality he's got. So I, I think he could be a really special player for them at guard. But you kind of. Yeah, you just don't know quite what they're going to have otherwise. And so I just can't speak with confidence right now.

Does what Lane Kiffin does at lsu, does that. Will that be judged at Alabama? Because I remember a lot of fans were in on Kiffin and I know Alabama didn't even consider Kiffin and I'm not saying they should have, but could DeBoer be judged against that? Like, let's say LSU does something magical this year.

Nick Kelly
Maybe. I don't think it's like a direct comp, but of course, yeah, any program that brings a new coach in and then automatically succeeds right away, that's pressure on everybody. I mean, Kurt Schenetti, as much fun as that was to see for us in the, you know, in the media or just people who are fans of the sport, like, it's awesome that he was able to revive Indiana.

Like, and I didn't realize about a quarter of the media in college football, they apparently all went to Indiana.

It's got a big alumni base, that's for sure. But actually, they do actually have a good J school, I think. But no, to answer your question about Lane Kiffin, I think it is tough because, yeah, there are some Bama fans that really like him and would have wanted him to coach. But to your point, I can confirm that was never going to happen. I'll put it this way, his history and the knowledge of people have of him from his time in Tuscaloosa will preclude him from being hired as the Alabama coach. I'll leave it at that. But yeah, it's always tough when a rival at that in lsu, if they succeed. But then again, I mean, I was telling you off the air, Shane, like I go so back and forth about LSU because I think they're either going to be amazing or just a fraud. And I'm not sure where that's going to be because they have so much talent that like, you might not actually have to coach that well and they do have good coaches. But then like when there's all this pressure and expectation, it's Hard to meet that sometimes.

So I feel like there's a few of those teams in this league. You know, it's like, man, they could be really good or they could fall flat on their face. But I do want to talk, talking about rivalries. Goal is here today and. And I think. What do you say? Implemented Iron bowl session in the practice where they played Dixieland Delight. Trying to make that game. They're tired of losing to Alabama. So what do you think about that hire over there?

Nick Kelly
I think it's pretty good. I mean, they have had a history of, hey, you beat Alabama before, we'll hire you. Didn't work out for Hugh Freeze, but Alex Golish, I guess I don't know if this is better or worse. He's given Alabama problems and he beat him. As you know, Tennessee's OC and they had that game, what was that in 2023, where Nick Saban walked off the field looking all disheveled from the rain and they barely beat usf. And then even I remember the day they dedicated Saban Field. Goelish took South Florida to Bryant Denny and that game was. It ended up like 42, 14 or something like that, but it was like a two, three point game going to the fourth quarter. So he's given Alabama problems. And at this point it's. I mean, it's hard to beat any team for that many times in a row. And if they can get some competent quarterback play, I think that could finally do it. But yeah, they certainly need to get back in the win column because Alabama didn't just win in football this year, they won. They beat Auburn in just about everything. And Auburn's down right now, so they need. They want to get back up. And it's bound to happen at some point.

Has that rivalry. Rivalry. I'm always challenged to say that. Has it lost any luster in the state or is it still as hot as ever?

Nick Kelly
It's still as hot as ever. It doesn't matter how good they are. And that sounds cliche, but I go to church with Auburn fans. I live in a community with Auburn fans. And like I said, I'm married to an Alabama fan. I mean, trust me when I say there's no love lost. Like, I'll put it to you this way. So my wife, Elizabeth, sweet as can be, you won't hear her say a bad thing about most people. But when I bring up Cam Newton, I'm just like, who are you? So there's no love lost all these years later.

Well, I Want to ask about Ryan Williams? You know, this is a guy that was, everybody was talking about this time last year. Not a lot of, not a lot of news from him this season. Is this a big year for him? Is this a year that they're really going to highlight him on that offense?

Nick Kelly
I think so because he's an older guy, which is crazy at this point because it feels like just yesterday we were talking about this guy being the 17 year old receiver, but he's been in the offense for two years. They don't have a lot of experienced guys on offense and so I wouldn't surprise me if he's a captain this year. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it wouldn't shock me. He's supposed to be here. So he's also, I think mature, he's gotten bigger. I mean he's engaged and you know, just all these different things happen in his life. And I do think that like I'm not ruling him out. I think that people are a little down on him. And yeah, I mean he's got to get the drops under control. But I've talked to multiple NFL types that still love the guy like, hey, as long as he can get his drops taken care of or minimized, like he can still be a first round pick type. So and again, even if it doesn't happen this year, he still has more time. He's gonna be a junior, so he's still got more time. But I still think that having the pressure off him is going to help a ton because think about going to his sophomore year. You go, I mean he was literally on the COVID of the video game. He's got a Nike deal. Like he's got all these things going on and this guy is 18 years old. I don't know how I would have handled that at 18 years old, much less how I'd handle it 28. So I think that having the little bit of that pressure off isn't the worst thing. Just like in the same way it's not the worst thing for Alabama. So I'm not, I'm not predicting he's going to be an all world receiver, but he's still got the ability and I'm just not ruling out. I don't think it's a continued downward trend necessarily.
