Hey, O. Welcome in the latest episode of that sec, Sam, your host, Michael Brad. Go by Sec Mike. Going to Twitters. And there he is, everybody's favorite cousin, Cousin Shane. What's up, buddy?
Shane
Hey, baby, what's going.
Mike
Oh, oh. Just trying to stay alive, stay out of this heat. I can't imagine being on the practice field like some of these outstanding players. You know what?
Guest Commentator
I know.
Shane
It's like you're in your air condition, like, I hope they're getting faster, Mike. You know, I hope they're learning this playbook. I was. It's funny, cuz. We were golfing the other day and it was kind of, you know, you got the canas or whatever, they're just like making that noise that's letting you know it's hot outside. And I was like, dude, it feels like 2A days. Feels like damn 2A days out there, you know, and the kids don't know it because that now they don't. They don't go full pads. Back in the day, brother, we were padded up. We were going twice a day. You wondering why back in my day, back when I was a kid, we had to walk up.
Mike
Yeah, well, you know, it. It may not be your day now, Shane. Yeah, but it can be everybody's day.
Venmo Promoter
How?
Shane
How, Mike? Tell me how if they go to
Mike
Omaha Steaks and use that promo code SEC to get $35 off your order. Shade. They've got some outstanding deals over there at Omaha Steaks. And it's not just steaks. It's, you know, chicken and pork. We made the. The pork. Pork lines of loins last night. Shape. Yeah, pork chops. Excuse me. God, were they good? I didn't know Omaha had pork chops. But they got them, so. And we got them covered, Shane, with that promo code sec, the presenting show. This football season is old. Oma Steaks. Can't beat it, Shane. You just can't. You can't.
Shane
You can't. And you know, the chicken comes individually wrapped. And I'm. I'm not saying I'm above, you know, cleaning chicken, but if I get it individually wrapped, just throw it in an air fryer or something, I'm all in.
Mike
So they've made cleaning that chicken for you.
Shane
They're doing half the work, Mike. I don't even gotta go to the store and pick it up. It is literally coming to my door. So give it a shot, help out the show. You get how much off again?
Mike
35 and orders 80. So 35. We're already talking down to 45. So the cousin's only playing. Paying $45 for $80 worth of meat. Heck yeah.
Shane
You can't go wrong with that, cuz.
Mike
No.
Shane
2, no Tofu if youf get the
Mike
Hell out of here.
Shane
You know that this ain't the tofu podcast, Mike. This is that SEC podcast down the south. We grill. So. And it's perfect time for it bad.
Mike
And then we grill. Shane. Yeah.
Shane
And then we drink celebrate over at Tennessee Legend distillery. That's right. If you are in the Smoky Mountains and you know it's kind of died down a little bit, kids are in school and everything and that's the perfect time to go over because you ain't got them little kids running around, go over to Tennessee Legend, let them know the cousin sent you. Not only going to get a discount, but you will also receive a bonus gift. They got two locations in the Smoky Mountains, one in Nashville.
Mike
Yeah, yeah. Mike says this ain't no tofu Big Ten podcast.
Shane
No, no, there's a pod for that. It ain't this one.
Mike
All right, Chase. So hey, we got all kinds of news and notes across the sec.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
But I thought this would be kind of interesting too. I want to shout out espn. They did. They're still doing some work. Oh, wait. Oh, one other thing real quick before we get to that.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Greg Sankey. So he's issued this big lengthy list. I'm not going to read the whole damn thing here. But basically what it says here, Shane, you know, these. All these guys that I got an extra fifth year to play and the guys that. So moving forward, this is not an issue. Where this is potentially an issue is a guy like, you know, Cole Hudson, I believe is his name. Texas offensive lineman who.
Shane
Yeah, who was.
Mike
He's out of eligibility. He's been in the NFL. Now he's back on Texas roster or Sterling Webb at Missouri. There's so many of these guys. So Greg Sankey has put this out and says, hey, hey, people. Eligibility rules, including those related to. To courts that, you know, we are still working through this. So I don't. Just based on this, which again, this is a letter from Greg Sankey that he sent to every SEC institution today. I don't know that these guys that. That are Coming back from the NFL, I don't know that they're going to be eligible. I really don't.
Shane
I don't think so, Mike. You know, I. I really don't.
Beautyrest Ad
I think.
Shane
I think mainly because it opens up a bigger can of worms. You know, I. I think you would just think of it from Sanki's point of view, Right? Yeah. We let one or two come in, and then that just opens up more lawsuits, Mike. You know what I'm saying? It just opens up more opportunity. And I feel like you've had your opportunity, and it's time to. I mean, it's time to grow up. Right? Get a big boy job, so.
Mike
And Lane Kifford made a really good point. It's the first time I believe something he said. But in his most recent LSU press conference.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
So they asked him, you know, like, how are there guys on last year's team that. That you're going to welcome back? And he's. He's like, hey, buddy, I. I've been here for six, seven months. These guys didn't even play for me.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
So how do I, you know, do they want to play for me? Do I want them on the. On the roster? And this is the only option we're giving guys is you could go back to the school you were at. What about when there was a coaching change, like at lsu? He says, if you're going to do this, you got to open it up to everybody. Which. Yeah. Which they're not doing. Like, you have to. You have to essentially go to the team you were already at.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Unless. Shout out Boomer sooner. Shane, we'll get to them in a minute. But one of the. They just picked up a guy.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Like, for whatever reason was out of eligibility. He said, hell, I'll just throw my name in the portal. So he's in the portal. So they. They got him. But again, will he be eligible based on this statement that Sankey put out? Maybe not.
Shane
And we're. I mean, dude, we're getting there. We're a few weeks away from playing football. So I. I mean, even now, if you get them on the roster, it's like you're limited on what, you know, what you can do with them. You're not going to mess up your rotation. I mean, it's like a practice squad member at this point. Right. And if they want to come down there and practice, be around the team, that's great. But I don't know, man. It just doesn't feel like any of these boys are going to hit the
Mike
football field and similar again, it's not exactly apples to apples, but remember, Alabama had that guy, I believe his name was Charles Bettyco, basketball player who was like, in the NBA, came back and played for Alabama. It was the SEC that was like, no, no, no, no, we're not doing this shit. Yeah, it was not, you know, so SEC can block all this. I saw someone in the comps, they're like, ncaa has already cleared us. Well, the SEC has got more say over the SEC than the. The NCAA has over the sec. I know that's confusing, but if Greg Sankey wants to shut this down, he. He can shut it down.
Shane
And I. I feel like you have to, right, because this kind of all got thrown together at the last second anyway. We're not just going to open up the door and say, you know what? You know, let's. Let's figure it out. Let's let them play for that. It's just. I feel like it's more distraction from the actual. I mean, we're not talking, you know, Trinidad or. We're not talking about Diego Pavia coming back and playing for Vanderbilt, you know what I'm saying? We're talking about a couple of guys that. That could help with some depth. And you'd love to have them play. I would imagine your team would love to have them. But it's. It's when you do that, then all of a sudden you're creating just more. More possibilities for just drama, if you will.
Mike
Right. And, you know, we see all these court cases. What you're not going to see, Shane, I guarantee it. You're not going to see any one of these, whether it's Texas, Georgia, lsu, whatever. Yeah, they ain't going to sue the sec. They won't do it. So, again, I. I think it's. It'll ultimately come down to the sec. I really do.
Shane
Well, let me ask you this. Are you hearing anything from the other conferences? Big Ten aces.
Mike
Pay attention to those.
Shane
Well, I'm just saying, I. I totally agree, but if you're meeting one of these teams at the playoff, or if one's coming, I don't know, to Austin, Texas, is this something that's going to pop up where. Okay, yes, we won't do it, but another conference will allow it.
Mike
Don't know, don't care. Okay.
Shane
All right. Just saying, that's how fresh this is. We don't even know yet. We will find out for you.
Mike
Well, we'll. Let me call Josh Bates, see what he's got. Apparently, he's Big Ted Fate down?
Shane
Yeah, he's getting, he's getting all kind of whispers up there too. Eddie, I just heard a rumor like your dms are not like mine.
Mike
All right, so what I was trying to lead with there, Shane, we've got some really good work here from espn. They have got some unfiltered anonymous coach comments on the SEC quarterbacks.
Shane
Ooh.
Mike
So this is a little bit different than anything that I've seen before. And they've only done the established starters. So otherwise, you know, Tennessee, we, we would talk about them. We don't know who the starter is. Vanderbilt, Florida, on and on. So I don't have comments for, for those guys. I, I got all the SEC ones that they had available. So here's the ones for Arch Banning. And honestly, Shane, I thought all of these were very, very fair, which is also why I wanted to showcase him. Here's what they said about Arch Banning. He's handled the situation better than anybody could possibly do. The expectations aren't fair. So personally, I hope he's got. He has a great year. Hopefully. I hope he has an off game against us. He could absolutely rip it like velocity, accuracy. Said an SEC defensive coordinator. He got a little out of whack and made some mistakes, but then people were really defending him. It's going to be really easy this year because people are going to have to double Cam Coleman. He's a real one and so is Ryan Wingo. So it's like you can't double both of them. So again, I, I feel like these are largely fair comments here with the Arch Manning hype and, and he failed to live up to it, but played a lot better in the second half and, and now he's got some better weapons to work with.
Shane
Yeah, and it, and it's funny because Arch was really asked to do probably more than most quarterbacks ever get asked, you know, and you. In just our lifetime, it, it almost feels like these quarterbacks are being pressured younger and younger, and there's no way you were going to keep Arch Manning on the, on the sideline. So he got thrown out in it. And I wouldn't say he sunk, but, you know, he didn't tread water there for a second and he was, you know, got a little bigger than, than he was expecting, but it was the progression on the back half of the season. Right. It's the additions that they mentioned in the comments that you've put around him to make his life a little bit easier. So I'm expecting more out of Arch Even though it's funny, I feel like there's less pressure on him this season than last year.
Mike
Oh, interesting. Apparently they, they called Mr. Heisman down there.
Shane
I just. Last year, I mean, we already crowned him, right. Everybody could not wait to see a Manning back in the sec and I, I just felt like that hype was. And for a younger man now, he's a little more, you know, calloused coming into this season. He's, he's not a vet, but might as well be. And I, I feel like, yeah, the expectations are down a little bit on him personally. Now the team isn't at an all time high because this is, you know, people are dubbed this year's national champs.
Mike
Yeah, well, if there is a Heisman leader in the sec, Shane, my money's on this man. Old Trinidad Chambl. He's a dude. An SEC coach said Lane probably gets too much credit for Trinidad. I love that comment. Trinidad is not underrated now. He's a quick decision maker. An SEC defensive coordinator said he makes fast decisions. He can obviously hurt you with his legs, he can hurt you with his arm. He's just a playmaker. He makes guys around him better. Ooh. So again, I, I think these are all fair.
Venmo Promoter
Yeah.
Mike
And it was interesting because Kiffin was kind of taking credit for Trinidad, his most recent press conference. So I love, I love the fact that, you know, again, I, I don't think there's anything inaccurate here at all.
Shane
It's Georgia, wasn't it? I'm trying, I try to figure out what coach said this, but you. Yeah, that's, that's the cool thing about Trinidad, you know, is, is he is a, I mean, he's just a gamer and doesn't matter what the situation is. You may think you got him boxed up, then all of a sudden he springs loose for 15 yards down the sideline. So he makes the team around him better too. You know, there you. We always talk about some of these quarterbacks, like, well, how's the offensive line? How's the wide receiver? How's the running game? You know, but sometimes a quarterback is what elevates those players around him. So, yeah, he's, I would say, by far because I do think this is a loaded SEC room. But right now he's, he's my number one quarterback in the, in the QB room.
Mike
It's hard to doubt him, isn't it?
Shane
Yeah, it really is. Even got the baby blue on today for him.
Mike
Well, I think the most disrespected quarterback, Shane, in the S.E.C. our man Gunner. Come on, Gunner. He's a big time winner. Here's what they said about him. He's a better, he runs it better than you think. Really smart, pretty accurate. And SEC defensive coordinator said, I don't think he's got an unbelievable arm talent, but he's pretty good. He's a great college quarterback in SEC defensive coordinator said, he's tough, so he can get some BO yards and take some big hits and all that stuff. I really like him. He's a really good player. I don't know if he's an NFL specimen, but he's a, he's a great college player. I love it. I, Again, I see. I think all these are very, very fair up to this point.
Shane
I, I mean, it's, it's been the knock so far, right? You look at all these QB ranks and you know who's, who's potential Heisman candidates. Gunner is a name that feels like he's always on the fringe of those conversations, but who cares, right? The ultimate goal is to win a national title. And I feel like when you do that or when you're put in one of these situations, you kind of like to have Gunner back there with the football because he's going to find a way to make it work and that's exactly what he does. I don't think they're going to be putting any statues out front in Athens down there, but I do think that they have an opportunity to win a national title because of him.
Mike
I. The only thing that is kind of funny is like, I don't, I don't understand why we bring up the NFL for these guys, you know, like, what does that got to do with anything? Diego didn't, did he? I don't even think he got drafted.
Shane
Right.
Mike
But I mean, he was awesome, you know? Yeah, that's got nothing to do with his legacy.
Shane
It's funny, while you're talking about it, I was like, dude, he'd be a hell of an H back in the NFL. You know, that's when you're talking. He reminds me of that Saints guy a few years back. I can't remember. He played quarterback and tied in and running back. He just had a little bit of everything.
Mike
I think was, yeah, yeah.
Shane
So he kind of reminds me of that. Just, he'll, he'll find a way to get in the end zone somehow,
Mike
as perhaps will Sam Levit. Shane, the new LSU quarterback, he played better the year before than he did last year. A defensive coordinator set to face LSU said he was really Impressive. During Arizona State's playoff run the year before. Just so sneaky, athletic, really. Way more elusive than you would think. One of those make something out of nothing kind of guys. He's good, solid passer. He'll miss on some throws that you expect him to make, to be that high level guy. But when he, but where he gets you is where he, when he extends plays. He's not the talent level that normal. LSU quarterbacks would be. An SEC defensive coordinator said if they have success, it's going to be because they got him, got him going in the system. He doesn't freak you out when you watch him, but he's dangerous at times. I would rather play him than Diego Pavia. How about that? He's no Pavia.
Shane
No, he's no Pavia. But you know, I, I, I feel like outside of LSU and maybe Mississippi State, I mean, not, it's, it's kind of funny how under the radar Sam Levitt is, right? With all these other quarterbacks we, we talk about, he's one that you just naturally think will be good because it's in Lane Kiffin system. Right? But this is a guy that I feel like has maybe a higher ceiling than, than we think and mainly because of the system. But if he can extend plays like you said, he's no Diego Pavia, but he doesn't have to be because he's not in Vanderbilt, you know.
Mike
Hey, did you see Coach Kelly? He gave a record prediction for lsu.
Shane
No, What'd he say?
Mike
You want to take a wild guess here? I'll, I'll, I'll throw the schedule up here. Overrunner's eight and a half. What do you think? Coach Kelly said LSU under Lane Kiff, they'll finish this year 8 and 4, 10 and 2.
Shane
Damn. He's trying to get back, huh?
Mike
That's him putting pressure on him, you know what?
Shane
Yeah. Oh, that's smart.
Mike
Yeah, he's always, he said the defense will be nasty. Offense always going to be good under Coach Kiffin is what he said.
Shane
So that's what he said. We were, we were one year away. And so Lane's got that team
Coach Sarkisian
shout out.
Mike
Brandon Rodart.
Shane
Hey, thank you, cuz.
Mike
Thank you so much for the donation. We're going to talk Texas here in a minute for old Brandon, but how about the. Ooh, now this one was, I think Shane might have wrote this one. I'm not sure.
Shane
A lot of big words.
Mike
Marcel here, Marcel Reed. The people that have been able to stop the run and play zone defense. He's Had a hard time against an SEC defensive coordinator said. Another one added, he still thinks he's a true quarterback, and we want him to keep thinking that way. He doesn't really want to run, but when he does, it's the scariest part. So. Oh, buddy. I mean, these are some harsh words. Basically saying, you know, maybe he's not a true quarterback. He's a better runner than he is a passer. Yeah, I don't, I mean, I, I, he's just such a hard one shank. Because sometimes half, half, you know, South Carolina's perfect example.
Shane
Yes.
Mike
Awful first half. You're like, we go benches this sorry guy. We can't never win anything with him. Then he comes out in the second half, he's unstoppable. The inconsistency. I see why people will throw some shade at him, but to say he's not a quarterback, that's, that's fighting words down in College Station. Shane.
Shane
But I, I don't know, man. I did my top three quarterbacks by the end of the season, total yards and a lot of that. I, I mean, I looked at rushing, and I feel like Marcel Reed has to go right there has to be maybe not my first. You know, got to have some progression. We got to be a quarterback first. I disagree with some of those comments, but, but, you know, don't forget, you are one of the fastest players on this football field, and you can make things happen with your legs. And so I hope they put him in the right spot, but I just think that Texas A and M is going to need him regardless, because there's going to be some damn dog fights, you know what I'm saying? And because of that, this is when Marcel Reed shined, when they were backs against the wall. You think the South Carolina game, you think the Notre Dame game, that's what we want to see is a little bit of that in his game this season.
Mike
Oh, Rex says Billy Lucci on line one. That's good. That's a good one.
Shane
All right.
Mike
And then we also got comments on. Ooh, Lenora Sellers. Shane Lenora Sellers. Oh, yeah, here we go. He really struggles to process in the middle of a game. SEC defensive coordinator said, when you move them around or you move things around on him, he really struggles. But I think in Kendall Brow system, if Kendall can be like, hey, you do this or you do this and take off running, he, if he can get him to that, I think the kid could be scary. He's so hard to bring down. Kendall will make him a little Bit more friendly. A different SEC coordinator said he's not going to force him to be something he's not, which I felt like he was at times. He was last year. They've got to try to win games. You're not a pocket passer. The best thing you do is take off and run because no one can tackle you. And Buddy, we've seen that at times too. I mean, this guy's a freaking tank.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
At times. They didn't utilize him that way, particularly in the red zone last year for some damn reason. But. Interesting. Some, some harsh comments, but I think it's fair given the, the lack of production.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Last year. And I also think it's fair to say, man, this guy could be scary good with in this offense.
Shane
Well, this is the one I'm expecting to hit the ground running. Literally. And, and I like how they say browse. It's not that he has an easy offense. He makes it easy for Lenores. The he, he takes some of those options out. And not saying that he can't handle a pro style offense, but I, I do think simp this for this football team in particular especially, I mean after all the coordinators he's been through. That's why you're going to see maybe South Carolina not sputter out of the gates like they've done before in the past. So no, I'm expecting a massive season from Lenora Sellers and, and, and I hope, I hope. I mean he's sitting there. What else you got to lose? You're not coming back. You're not. You're going to the NFL regardless. At the end of this thing, I bet there's several times he's going to have over 100 yards rushing.
Mike
And to say that he's not a NFL passer or anything like. That's not Shane's words. That's. That's the anonymous coach comment. Right, Chad? I think, well, you'll probably say Peyton, but I think people, if they're being honest, Tom Brady's best quarterback of all time. Not even he's good when he doesn't get protection. Yeah, Lenore Sellers was the most pressured quarterback in power four the last two years. This is multiple years. So how the hell. I don't know how we can sit here and say he can't do this, he can't do that. Throw Tom Brady's ass back here in his prime, he couldn't have done shit with behind Carolina's offensive line. You know what?
Shane
That's right. I mean Hinden Hooker's the Only guy I've ever been able to say to do it. You know
Mike
he had a top 10 offensive table.
Shane
Yeah, he did. Absolutely. So, no, I, I did. If you're running for your life, that's exactly what you're going to get. That fight or flight. And I, I feel like they'll. But again, that was the system that he was in. This is a system that's going to put him in a better spot even if the offensive line isn't as good as maybe Chris Marler thinks. I listen.
Mike
All right, how about these guys on John B. Shane, his Washington State tape was way better than how he played last year. An SEC defensive coordinator said he's a really good quarterback. You've got to do a good job against him. Matier's a good player, he's athletic. Said a defensive coordinator who will face Oklahoma this year. There's some balls he throws very well and others that I think he's just okay at. I don't know if that. He's always, always reads it the best, but that offense is suited well for him and they get a lot out of them. They were some games. They were some games. He looked outstanding last year and others where he looked just okay.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Again, I mean, some harsh, some praise, but I think that's all fair.
Shane
Yeah, I, I honestly, I feel like John Mattier, second year in the SEC is going to, gonna, it's gonna be a little bit like a, a taller Diego Pavia. You know, I just, I feel like he's gonna be the one that we talk about the end of the year that just got the job done. Right. I don't, I don't think. Remember back in the day when they used to have those quarterback challenges, you know, they'd run around and throw stuff. I don't think John Mateer would win one of those. But in a pickup game and I gotta get 10 guys with me. I'd like to have John Matiere in that huddle because he's going to find a way to score a touchdown. So I, I think this is a big second year bump for him in the sec.
Mike
Yeah. And again, he's a very different player than this guy, but he just kind of made me think of. And I always forget he played at Oklahoma.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Because to me he played at Alabama forever. But Jalen hurts. Jalen hurts. Strikes me that way too. You know, maybe not always the prettiest, maybe not the most efficient at times, but you need a game winning drive or, or a conversion.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
I don't think there's anybody I'd rather have than old Jalen hurts. He's. He's gonna get it done.
Shane
You know what 99 clutch. Is that a thing? I don't know.
Mike
Well, I'll tell you who might be clutch 99 Shane.
Shane
Who's that?
Mike
As Byron Brown from Auburn. I'm not one of these Byron Brown haters but I'm also not one of the guys who thinks he's a first round NFL pick either. Said a coach who will face Brown, a coach who faced Brown at South Florida. He's all right. I'm not enamored with this guy.
Shane
Oh damn.
Mike
Which Florida. Shane wrote this one?
Shane
Which Florida coach was this? You know,
Mike
probably Napier, right?
Shane
Yeah, yeah. Just one more jab on his way out to jmu. Godly. That's harsh. No, I mean, I mean this is one, this is one of the first ones that's a first year guy, you know what I'm saying? So yeah, I, I don't know. I mean the guys. I'm not going to sit here and tell you Brown's going to be the best quarterback but I'm not saying that he can't be right and goal is the system. I think anything's possible but you know, to sit here and say he's an NFL talent, I don't, I don't think that's the case either because he wouldn't have been in South Florida, you know, last year if that was but again, they grow up, they get better. He's in Auburn, he has an opportunity. Not an Auburn hater. I'm just saying I gotta see it from him before I could judge him
Mike
like these coaches shout out to cousin Danny every one that's playing Tennessee. He said Jim knows gonna eat him. He's fired up. How about Bazou fan chain? They're fired up for old Austin Simmons. O Anonymous com comments on Austin Simmons hey, he's got physical talent but he's a processor and he's a little robotic to me. An SEC coach said of Simmons he'll just do okay. Said a defensive coordinator set to face Simmons this year. There's definitely talent in his body. I just don't feel like he's likes to be hit. Obviously Eli Drinkowitz does a great job with those guys but there's some transition there with a new offensive coordinator, new quarterback, all that stuff so. Oh, I don't know if Missouri fans are going to like these comments Shane.
Shane
I mean aren't you a little worried? I mean we're just talking quarterback here and I'm not saying Austin Simmons is going to get hurt, but I mean, man, they've been pretty. I mean they've been getting screwed pretty much every year by quarterback, getting banged up or injured, you know what I'm saying? So now you got a guy that sat some of last year and I'm not saying he can't, but it's one of those, you gotta, we have to see it, right? We have to see. This is a guy I definitely don't want to see outside the tackle box, you know, and you don't need to with this running game. So I'm going to hold off judgment because I've only seen one good drive and it resulted in a touchdown against Georgia. So as far as I know, he's pretty good quarterback.
Mike
Well, and again, I don't know if this really matters or means anything, but I think it is noteworthy. Shane Austin Simmons also skipped two years of high of high school football.
Shane
Oh no, I didn't know that.
Mike
So he skipped two years to enroll early and then he's largely not played at Ole Miss. So I mean we're talking five years since this guy's played contact football full season. You know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, I mean that's, I again, does that really matter? I don't know, but that's, that's kind of interesting, don't you think?
Shane
I do. And I wonder if it helps or hurts, you know, because I've heard so fresh. I mean you hear stories, you hear guys that never picked up the football until they got into high school, you know, then you hear those ever since they were five years old, was playing football. So I just feel like everybody's body is going to react a little bit different as far as injuries concerned. And to sit here and say, you know, he's he more prone for injury. I don't know, man. We just had one that we saw and that may have been the last one that we do see.
Mike
Right. Well, the last comments we got here, Shane Shout out Cabario Taylor, Mississippi State's outstanding emerging quarterback. Here's what the anonymous comments are for Kamari Taylor, I don't know if he's panned out or not yet as a true quarterback, but athletically I think he's special. And SEC defensive coordinator said he had a really good year for a young guy. Another SEC coordinator said he only started two games, but he really flashed.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
So again, not anything. Huge, huge revelations there, but noteworthy nonetheless that basically people saying I don't think he scratched the surface of what he's going to be.
Shane
That's exactly what this is, Mike. We don't, we don't, we don't know. And in fact I was saying the other day, I don't know where he ultimately finishes but dude, if he, if he's as good as those two game flashes that we did see, there may be a real conversation by the end of the season that he's a top five quarterback in the conference. So yeah, I feel like that's why Mississippi State fans are so excited and to be honest, why a lot of people play Mississippi State probably aren't happy to play them.
Mike
Right. And again, we anticipate with Zach Arnett the defense will be better. But I was still, I think realistically, Shane, if Mississippi State's going to beat some of these teams that they're not projected to beat. Yeah, they're probably going to have to outscore them. So they're, you know, you're again, you could say pressure, but I would just say unleashing Kamari O'Taylor, like go out there, if you throw a pick, we may, we weren't going to win either way. You know what I mean? But if, but if you're forcing the issue and you're making plays and the confidence grows, that's your avenue to Mississippi State having an exciting season, just having one of the best. If not, who knows, like a top three ish type quarterback by the end of the season, if you get him going, you start beating some people, that that's the path to success. I feel like just let them loose,
Shane
you know, I'm sure they'll try to be conservative with them at first, but there's gonna be some games they're gonna say, dude, we just need you. Just play, play some football. So those are gonna be the fun ones. There's. But I do feel like the highs and lows are gonna be very vast different, you know.
Mike
Right. And again, Jeff Leby, I don't know how much of a hot seat he's on, but I. You can't. At Mississippi State you can't win one SEC game in two years and not be facing some kind of pressure. So you gotta go out swinging.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
You gotta be as creative as you've ever been. Let this quarterback do lay it all out on the line, each and every SEC game because if you don't, you're not going to be too good this year. And then there's probably going to be a new coach in there. You know what?
Shane
Yep. Absolutely, man. At least build some momentum, some excitement for the following season. You know, so they have some young talent that can emerge here. But, dude, you're. You hit the nail on the head. You got to win some damn SEC games, brother.
Mike
Hey, well, speaking of. Well, I don't know if you really want to go here or not, but we got a comment here from hookah member for 15 months, Shade. Is the Shade trade stopping in Texas? If so, I'll be there. Austin, October 17th. Come on, cuz, beers on me.
Shane
Yeah, absolutely. Texas is on the list. I know. Texas A and M is also on the list.
Mike
Seeing his 17th, he's saying Florida.
Shane
Well, I mean, that's. I gotta find the game, right? Ideally, I would like a. A late game. That's one thing, too. I'm kind of looking at. I don't want to do an early one. So if the Florida games at 11 Central, you know, I just feel like that takes away from the tailgate experience. And the whole point of this is for fanfare to find, you know, who's got the best damn tailgate in Austin. And I don't want to do it if it's wrapped up by 9am you know what I'm saying? So. Really depends on. On what time those games are. But, yeah, we got to go. So we're going to be going again. The first three have already been planned out. We're going to Gainesville. Week one, week two, we will be in Lexington. And then week three, Oxford, Mississippi.
Mike
You told me you didn't want to drive it to Nashville. Well, I. I don't think you know much about Austin. It's. Austin's a bigger city. It's. It's even.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
And I don't know about their tailgate scene, to be honest, either.
Shane
Oh, really?
Mike
I. Yeah.
Shane
I mean, it's no tailgate scene. Damn.
Mike
I mean, it's a. It's a.
Shane
Like a.
Mike
It's a big city. You know what I mean? That one's taking a lot of grass out there that I. That I recall.
Shane
Hook them. Convince me. Send it to that SEC podcast gmail.com and let me know that we've got a place to put a Class C camper.
Mike
I mean, the campus is awesome. I'm sure it's great. It looked like it was fantastic for students here, but I don't know. How about Scott Fitz? I remember when they said Lagway was winning. The husband Simmons went from hero to zero because of two games behind an offensive line that struggled early. Yeah, lagway to a Heisman.
Shane
Some people had them. And, you know, I. I think P got exposed for his 25 QB rankings. And there was DJ sitting up top. I, I, Dude, I was convinced that DJ Lagway was, was going to be an elite quarterback and, you know, similar to Arch Manning kind of getting thrown into some of this.
Mike
But he's right. There's plenty of gr. I mean, that's, that's Austin.
Interviewer
Yeah.
Shane
Camping World doesn't need to know that
Mike
they, they have more. All that, that, that's the kind of grass they have.
Coach John Sumrall
Yeah.
Mike
Go park at bad boy on 6th Street, Shane. Let me know how that works for you.
Shane
It sounds bad. I, I don't know. Does that sound bad? I don't know.
Mike
It's. Yeah, don't do that.
Shane
I'm losing tires.
Guest Commentator
Okay.
Mike
Hey, you know what? You're not losing, Shane.

Mike
Well, hey, so I tease this. Shane yeah, so Oklahoma, again, I have no idea if this guy's going to be eligible, but they're, you know, in the comments they're saying, oh yeah, we're good, we're good. Shane but they landed Arkansas defensive tackle Danny Sila, I think is how you say it. So he was a player there at the Razorbacks Last year. Yeah. This is the guy that ran out of eligibility, but it went in the portal anyway. I don't understand why, but maybe he's from the future Shane. Cause he found out this ruling hit and I can go anywhere I want. So Sooners pick him up. Another defensive tackle in the transfer portal that has got SEC experience. Now we know Oklahoma's pretty loaded on the defense.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
So it's not like this guy's going to come in and we're going to be relying on him day one to be a starter or anything like that. But if he's eligible, which again we, we open with that Greg Sankey comment made me believe that he may not be, but if he is, Shane, you could just never have enough defensive lineman in this conference. So I love the pickup for the Sooners.
Shane
Yeah, I wouldn't think that would be the like you would think some of these other teams that are struggling with some defensive linemen through book his money. But I guess with the not knowing if he's going to get to play or not, you're you if you're a kid and you get to pick. I mean, hell, I'm going to go to Oklahoma because they're going to put me in the NFL at some point. So. Yeah, this is a big get. I mean you can't have enough big bodies running around.
Mike
Put that on a shirt, man. With this nine game sec, you're going to need them when you get to. I mean just look at the last five. Shane Carolina, who Marlowe's got me convinced they're 16. And oh, John's at Florida. Summerall's got me convinced they're going to the playoff. Ole Miss, I mean everybody we talked to at media days, about half of them said Ole Miss go with the Natty. Billy's got me convinced Elko's winning it all. And then Austin Simmons got me convinced. I mean you, you gotta have some depth here if you go compete this league. You know what?
Shane
Oh yeah, man. Geez Louise, it's gonna be such a fun year. I mean it is, it is. And I feel like we're gonna be a little hurt at the end because we've been beating up on each other all year long. But we're gonna convince you that a 9 and 3 sec team belongs in the, in the college football playoffs.
Mike
And then the only other nug here from old Norman. Shane.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Oh, I, you know, new name here. Not the, not the die hard Sooner fans. I'm sure they're well aware, but that they added a running Back this offseason. Colorado State transfer Lloyd Avant. Apparently, if they were playing the game today. Shane. Yeah. This may be our starting running back.
Guest Commentator
Ooh.
Mike
That's how well he's playing in camp here. So we still got Robinson, we still got some nice players there, but Avon apparently has. Has broken out. He had only 90 carries last year at Colorado State, but he had 417 yards. So nearly five yards per carry, five touchdowns, and he must be explosive. Shane. 24 catches, 260 yards. So over 10 yards per catch. Yeah, at Colorado State last year. So maybe a little bit deeper at running back than we anticipated in Norman.
Shane
Oh, man. What if they just turned back to old school Oklahoma? Just run in the damn football all the time. Four yards in a cloud of dust and then just lean on that defense. They, Hey, I, I feel like everybody wants to go to John Matier, you know, and Arbuckle and why this offense didn't go with at the end of the day, because it's. They didn't have balance, they didn't have a running game. So, yeah, I don't think you can have too many defensive linemans. You can't have too many running backs over there. You just need the right one on the football field. So it's time to get some bounce back in Norman.
Mike
Well, where they're also trying to run the ball. Shane, Run that ball down in Austin. I like these comments from old Sarkeesian. Let's kick it over to Sar.
Coach Sarkisian
Well, you see it in pass protection, you know, I mean, we got, we got plenty of blitzes, you know, and they got to step up and fit these guys up in pass pro. There's a, there's a, you know, you guys see the T shirts? No thud. No play. And so, you know, they've got to run with a real sense of physicality, especially in our team run periods. I mean, Today we ran 16 straight runs. There's no passes. And so, you know, we want to be able to be a team that can run the football when, you know we're going to run it and, and finding ways to run it. And that's running through down safeties who are unblocked doing those things. And so I'm seeing that from them, that they're having the ability to do that.
Mike
Oh, so again, I don't think he's calling out last year's team by any means. But yeah, you know, that was the thing, Shane, when we got into dog fights with Ohio State and Georgia and you know, Elite, even A and M, you know, they did have success against A and M and Oklahoma running the football. But that, I think those were the keys to those victories. Yeah, but you've been unable to do that against Georgia. You've been unable to do that against Ohio State. Again, New year new. So who, who the hell cares? But I think he, Sarkis recognizes that and says, hey, we're gonna run this, run the hell out of the boat. 16 runs in a row. Does he not know he's got Arch Manning and King Coleman out there? Like, you know, he's, he's not, they're not going to be soft. They can't. Because you just can't win at an elite level if you're, if you're not tough.
Shane
This is what can make Texas dangerous, brother. You know, everybody wants to talk about Arch Manning and Cam Coleman and, you know, Wingo and all these guys, but if they're getting all the attention, guess what? That leaves wide open the running game. And if you can't do that, then you're going to find yourself losing multiple SEC games, Mike. So I, I, I love this. Let's, let's get the ground game going. That's going to make Arch's life easier. And, and if Texas is ultimately going to make the run, pun intended. This is what they got to do is have that balance.
Mike
Well, speaking of Arch, he also had a, I thought, a funny comment on Arch and then he's asked about Cam Coleman's amazing catch. So here's back to back. Arch and Cam here.
Coach Sarkisian
I think the team responds really well to Arch. You know, I think Arch, Arch loves football. He loves to practice, he loves to work. And it's funny because Arch probably talks a little more shit than people give him credit for outside of our building. So in practice, there's a good amount of banter that goes on. And now Arch has more confidence. He's, he gives a little more of that banter. He gives a little more of that banter back. He and Colin were getting into it today about a screenplay, and it was
Mike
all out of fun.
Coach Sarkisian
It's not nothing out of, like, negative. It's out of fun. But it's, you could see that they're loving practice. They're loving to practice. But I think that starts when your quarterback loves practice, when he's having fun being out there. And you can feel those guys responding
Mike
that way in practice. Your response, reaction, the team's reaction to
Coach John Sumrall
that catch that camp Coleman had that
Coach Sarkisian
you all post, that's crazy catch, man.
Mike
I don't, I don't know, like, I
Coach Sarkisian
Tried to check his gloves, thought it was old school.
Shane
Stick him on there. That was a.
Coach Sarkisian
It was a heck of a play.
Mike
So Sark's got jokes and Arch Manning loosening up, talking, according to Sark. Does that do anything for you, Shane? Does that make you more confident about old Arch going into your second year as a starting quarterback?
Shane
It does, right? I mean, because here we are on the outside talking about how much pressure is inside that locker room and when you hear in your quarterback, you know, not being tight, I feel like that it opens up like, hey, man, this is, this is a football team that knows exactly what they have. This is a coach that knows exactly what. I mean, he's been around championship football squads. So everybody's good now, right? Little pep in their step. But that's, that's going to tighten up pretty quick here in the next couple weeks, I would imagine.
Mike
I like this comment from Mike because I saw it too. I was like, that can't be what that says.
Shane
They need to change the logo. Std.
Mike
That's what it was. I was like, right, no, hey, the state of the state of Texas. Shane. So I haven't heard much from A and M's offensive coordinator before. Holloman, Wiggins. What are they going to do with old Marcel Shane? I don't know if you're aware of this. Marcel Reed's never had a dedicated quarterbacks coach in College Station. He's got one now. Marcel, for the first time having a
Coach Sarkisian
dedicated quarterback coach that isn't splitting duties. How have you maybe seen him develop
Shane
by having the ability to work with
Coach Sarkisian
you, but then also have his own position coach like.
Coach Lynch
Like that.
Interviewer
Yeah, it's been great, right? You know, because you talk about Coach lynch, who's been a coordinator in this league, who's well versed in quarterback play, but also has, you know, a really great background just as far as developing quarterbacks. And now you continue to see Marcel and his growth. Just as far as understanding kind of what we're doing, we're putting more on a quarterback, you know, this year and we're asking more of the quarterback. And he's done a great job of understanding that, but also making sure that he's ready for that. So I've seen kind of his game kind of take it to the next level and I think there's. That's a part of growth kind of on his part, him understanding that this is a year that he knows that this offense is going to go as he goes. Him kind of finding comfort in kind of what we're doing, but also him putting the time in. Right. Like it's hard to get results if you don't put the time in and you don't have the right kind of habits and he's developing all of those.
Mike
So I think that's interesting, Shane, because I don't know if you heard over the off season there was some discussion about, I can't remember the exact question, but it was something somebody asked Marcel Reed. It may have been at media days. And he just said, I'm trying to remind people that I'm, that I am a quarterback. And then we just play, you know, we share these anonymous coach comments. Yeah, this guy thinks he's a quarterback. And then here we got Wiggins, our new offense coordinator, saying, hey, we're putting more on him. We're going to go as he goes. So somebody has to be proven right here. Either A and M is going to show that Marcel Reed is the quarterback, that that can get us back to the playoff, or the, all these haters are going to be proven right because if they're, if they're putting more on Marcel and he's not good enough to be a traditional quarterback, then A and M is going to fall. So I just think this is kind of an interesting dynamic we got here.
Shane
You know, it's funny, just, just tweet Marcel Reed's a bad quarterback and, and watch the bookmarks. Then Maggie's gonna let you know if he has a good season. Now, they may disappear at the end of the year if it goes the opposite way, but Mike, I, I, this is, this football team, I mean, it's ultimate success comes down to those two guys. The coach there, that coordinator and Marcel Reed just getting it, getting it going. And I have no doubt my mind they've got plenty of talent down there to do it. But again, has it been unlocked? Yes. But not every, single, you know, damn football game. So Marcel's, this is a big prove it year for him. And you know how we talked about NFL like, I don't know why they keep talking like Marcel wants to play in the NFL and right now he's not going to. I mean he'll, he may get an opportunity on a, as a backup, but this is an opportunity for him to prove that he could be a franchise quarterback. So this is a big prove it season for, for, for Marcel. And I gotta say this, that hoodie, freaking awesome. But then I started thinking it's, it's College Station in August. Damn, this guy's crazy. So, yeah, Wild man here it's the first time I've seen the coordinator. I like him.
Mike
Well, again, I don't want to put this Marcel Reed in the class of all these guys I'm about to mention Shane. Yeah, but there was literally no buzz on. Joe Burrow, his, his final year at lsu. Fernando Mendoza. There was, to my knowledge, no buzz on. I know Georgia was interested, Missouri was interested, but they weren't sitting here saying, this guy's gonna be the first pick in the damn draft. You know what I mean? There, there's, I don't even think Jaden Dales, remember he came back to school. Yeah, I, I do recall he had like an opportunity to go to the NFL, but I don't think he was, I think he was going to be like a low round pick. Huh. Again, is Marcel Reed these guys? No, but there's, there's so many guys who were like, this guy, this guy's just a college quarterback and then he has a big breakout and all of a sudden he's a first round pick. All those guys I just mentioned were, you know, that, that could be Marcel with all these weapons he's got. Come on, man, come on.
Shane
Like Chris Winky back in the day, you know, just, no, I, I, brother. There's not a lot of veterans in the Southeastern Conference either. And you know those, everybody talks about the practice and how important it is and stuff, but it doesn't matter when the lights come on. And this is a guy that's been doing it for a couple of years. So as far as experience, I don't think there's a more experienced quarterback in this league, is there? Maybe Leor.
Mike
Yeah, yeah. Loris would be one that stands out, but specifically in this conference, no, another, you know, a lot of these guys like Sam Levitt in, in other conferences, Trinidad and lower levels, John Mattier at Washington State. But yeah, not in this conference. It's, it's Sellers and it's Marcel Reed.
Shane
Yeah, yeah, the vets.
Mike
Well, yeah, speaking of a vet, I love this one. Shane, from our friend John Sumral. He's gonna coach him hard as he said.
Shane
Your philosophy, look, on just breaking down the team and then building them back up mentally, you know, challenging them, you
Mike
know what I mean?
Shane
Like, yeah,
Coach John Sumrall
Our job is to always be demanding. The standard is really, really high and it never wavers. I'm not necessarily into breaking a player down. I am into making things hard. Like this is a challenging game and tough teams win. And so I think you have to embrace a level of toughness and grit. It takes to be successful. You know, I. I don't have a desire to really break anything down, but I do want our guys to be challenged to the point that they're mentally tough and they can overcome adversity because there's going to be adversity. And so we create adverse situations every day in practice. But I've never really prescribed, like, let's. Let's break them down. Now. I do prescribe to the theory of, like, let's push them to the edge. Like, let's make it right there. Let's put our toe right on that line of how hard can we make this? But. But I don't want guys to break down because I want them to all be available. And so I don't. I mean, we coach them really, really hard all the time. You know, the guys are. And if they're not coachable or don't want to get coached, and I don't want them to come here because it's not going to be a good fit.
Mike
But.
Coach John Sumrall
But I'm not. I don't really prescribe to, like, breaking anybody down. Yeah. I just. I. I don't know. I want to build. I want to always build them up. Sometimes you build them up by being hard as. I mean, that's like, just the truth. Sometimes it's got to be really, really freaking hard to build them up. But I don't want to ever break them down because I'm. They're broke down. They're not any good.
Mike
Speaking of building, I love that he could take a kind of a stupid question and be like, yeah, I see where you're going with this. And here's an honest answer. I love that. And shout out Liquid. Pointing out Billy Napier couldn't open the damn water bottle he was crushing. Coach just destroyed one.
Shane
He crushed that water. I was like, oh, man, Florida's got a coach. You know, that's not Liquid's comment posted up.
Mike
But, hey, makes a good point, right? You know, it's got to be hard.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
If you. If you're going to make a championship team, it's got to be hard as hell. But at the same time, you know, there's. There's got to be limits.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
We can't have junction boys here.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Remember, for anybody that doesn't get that reference, Paul. Paul Bryant. Shane allegedly took 100 players to camp and about 20 came back. He didn't kill anybody, but the rest just quit, you know?
Shane
Yeah. Yeah. I definitely would have been one of those, Mike. So.
Mike
But.
Shane
But again, you got to set expectations you're creating a new culture down there. The standards that John Sumrall wants and you know that's what you're signing up for. You, you watch a guy like Kirby Smart, you know, the, the vets there, they're telling the new guys, hey, this is, this is how it is. They're making, they're moving you along. But if that, if that line's never set early in this in camp, then, then you're going to fall short and then halfway through the season you're going to mess up. I don't know if you got a Womack. I was listening to him today too, and he was talking a little bit about like the Florida State game. He says it's kind of like a fine line in hitting and physical practice, you know, and you don't want to get anybody hurt or anything like that. He says, but you know, you got to, we got to in essence practice hard or we're going to get beat like we did last year at the Florida State. Of course, I'm paraphrasing, but that's, you know, it's just, it's a, it's a fine line, but you have to be physical because this is a very physical conference.
Mike
You could have fooled me. They didn't practice physicality at Alabama last year.
Shane
Oh, they, they own it now. They're on it, cuz.
Mike
Just like Mizu fans on it. Only quarterback that we talked about November is Austin submits Hardy and Simmons will be Heisman talks. Let's go. M I Z. Oh, what is, what does he got to do be in the Heisman conversation? You think Shane Austin just.
Shane
This team's got to be 10 and 2 and they got to have some signature wins. And by signature wins, I mean Georgia on the road, Texas at home. You know, they got to have something that, that, that carries a little bit. Because the problem with the, the Heisman is you kind of have to win it earlier in the season. You think about Mendoza. Mendoza won it because of that awesome catch in the back of the end zone. Right? I, I'm not saying he won it because of that, but that put him on the map. So he's got to have a game like that early against an A M or an Ole Miss on the road.
Coach Beamer
Dang.
Mike
And he gifted 20 membership. He's feeling it. He's feeling the Heisman drinks burner.
Shane
I see he's starting starting the Heisman propaganda already. Well played, coach.
Mike
Hey, how about Old Lane Lane Train? I didn't think he said anything too interesting, but latest on Sam Levitt, you know, again, guys up thousand percent. But what's been your review of Sam
Coach John Sumrall
so far now that he's practicing fully
Mike
and does it influence your preseason plan in any way?
Coach John Sumrall
Because there's sort of that compressed amount
Mike
of time with him at full strength like you have.
Coach Lynch
Sam's had a great week, had a great practice today, taking care of the ball, really throwing the ball really accurate and on time and extremely pleased with his week and how he looks. You know, we have high standards, how we want things and what we want them to look like, you know, and probably, he was probably unrealistic what I was expecting to look like when he can't move and he's, you know, just throwing without really having his weight to be able to push into. So now that he's healthy, he said he's had a great week. We're really excited about him.
Mike
Oh, he seems excited, doesn't he?
Shane
You can't. He can barely hold it back. Mike.
Mike
I'm really excited about Sam Levitt.
Shane
Oh, man, he always gets excited about tick tocks and stuff. But it's quarterback. No, and, but I do like it. You know, whether you believe it or not, I, I think that this is a big sign because that was for me, some of the biggest question marks coming into this thing is what if Sam doesn't play, right? Does the Clemson game change? Does it, you know, bleed into an Ole Miss matchup? So fact he's out here, you know, early August, getting some reps. That's a good sign, man.
Mike
I think so too, Shane. I think so too. And Sam Levitt was in good spirits. Hard to believe considering our friend Chris Marlow was asking him questions. I don't know if you saw the. Shane, this went super viral. Same two parter, both very important, new to Louisiana. What's been your favorite part or your favorite food spot here in Baton Rouge? And then also saw video dunking over the goal post this summer. There's only like four basketball players on the team right now. Any chance you're gonna have to suit up for Will Wade's squad this upcoming year?
Guest Commentator
Yeah, no, the people are great in Louisiana. The passion, you know, just walking down the street is in print is pretty incredible, Justin. You know, the way that they, they love the state and put on for the state, you know, it just makes you want to be here even more. People around the facility just showing so much love to Baton Rouge and the entire area, you know, it's just been a blessing being out here, you know, I didn't think I really didn't even, you know, I'm from Oregon, so Louisiana kind of felt almost fake to me in a way. I didn't think, I didn't think it was a real place. But after being out here, you know, I just love the trees and I've always wanted to be in the South. The humidity, obviously, was something I had to get used to, but I love it now. I love the way it makes my skin feel and, you know, everything like that. So it's been, it's been amazing. Sorry, what was your last.
Mike
So people jumped on that. Shane. Yeah, he didn't know Louisiana was real. Clearly, clearly the guy's joking, but I, I get it. It's a, it's culture shock when you come down to the South. And I, I just think it's funny that Marler went viral for, for something like that, you know?
Venmo User
What?
Shane
Oh, it's one of many, you know, I, I still wonder how he sneaks into those things, but I, I, I love it. And, and honestly, it's, it's a perfect recipe because at least he'll ask the questions, you know? Yeah, no, I, I, I mean, this said really didn't do much. Right. It didn't change anything how I feel about Sam. But I do think that you got to remember there's a lot of new faces down there, you know, and the, the other concern about not having your leader out there was kind of bringing those guys together. And so I, I think they got a good kid here. I feel like LSU is going to win a lot of football games this year, but I will tell you, man, they, if you were to put everything from top to bottom, from all 16 teams, LSU by far had the most coverage this offseason, and it wasn't even close. So they, they, they're building something special down there. If not, we're going to watch it, man. And we're going to wait for Marlor's questions next Saturday.
Mike
Hey, I, I don't have a clip here because it wasn't worth playing, but Alabama, they interviewed Ryan Grub, the offensive coordinator today, Shane, and they asked him about the quarterback competition. Literally, this is, these are the quotes he said. No separation, even battle. Now, again, it's early in camp, but does that do anything for you? Are we just, are we truly neck and neck? Are we waiting for a scrimmage or, you know, at this point, do you think we're, we're going to see multiple Bama quarterbacks out here?
Shane
I really do think that this one's close, but I'm I, I don't, I don't know, man. I really think that this is going to come down the wire and ECU doesn't really matter who you're going to be able to roll out there, you know what I'm saying?
Mike
Stephen told us yesterday East Carolina was pretty good last year. He put this as a sleeper.
Shane
Oh man, Stephen.
Mike
I.
Shane
Why is he always doing that? If it's not Texas, it's ecu. It's just, come on. I, there's no way that this is going to be a ball game. I, they could come out here. Alabama could leave all quarterbacks on the sideline and still win by three scores. That's what should happen here. They could come out there literally with 10 players and win by three scores. So I'm not concerned with who they got at quarterback. But it does not, it would not blow my mind if this isn't a two drive, two drive situation, you know, just to get some valuable reps and make sure you make the right decision. Because apparently Caleb DeBoer is under some pressure this year.
Mike
And the only other note here I thought was kind of interesting from Bama camp. Yeah, running back A.K. deer, redshirt freshman. Apparently he's coming on strong, Shane, and he's not even the young running back everyone's excited about. They're excited about E.J. crowell, who's it was been kind of banged up, but not anymore. Shane, he's looking good. He's. I, I think Alabama may have a two headed monster at running back down here. Does that do anything for you?
Shane
Oh, I'm telling you. Where's Stephen up at? He's around here somewhere.
Mike
He's.
Shane
He had to walk, he had to walk away from his computer for a second, Mike, because he's so damn excited about the Tide. So. Yeah, how can he not be? Man, this is, this is a team that we, we've kind of picked apart all offseason and now it's starting to come together at the right time. So I like it and I like the coaches. I, I listen to all of them, the coordinators talk. They were, they were upbeat, they were positive. But I do feel like there's some learning needing to be done this, these next couple of weeks, you know. Sure. Up a couple of these, these spots
Mike
and then at Mississippi State. So again they're another one chain that is potentially if this is allowed, which again I'm not against it, but we do. Greg Sankey seems like he kind of is. They're going to be adding two players from last Year's squad. Shane down at Mississippi State to add to that defense and two really good ones. Edge rusher Malik Sila, I think is how you say that. And safety Jaron Manning. So again, these are guys that are at eligibility that have a fifth year if they want it. Manning had 91 tackles last year at the safety spot. An interception, four tackles for loss. And Sila had 33 tackles, led the team with seven and tackles for loss, two sacks. So Jeff Leby has clarified they are not cleared to practice, but he says they're in the building. There's not too much to say besides that because they're not eligible. So again, if, if big if here or maybe a little if, I don't know. But if they're back, Mississippi State adding two veterans to the defense, that's hell. This late in the process, that's, that's a giant win.
Shane
Yeah, for them, definitely bad. They need everything positive to go their way. Stay healthy, get more bodies out there. Yeah, this is a big one for Mississippi State for sure.
Mike
And how about Carolina, Shane?
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
Is this big deal? No deal? You tell me. Beamer seems like he's getting tired of asking or getting asked about Dylan Stewart and Jacarius.
Coach Beamer
Pete Fence, but that's a. Defensively, special teams. As we go through the week
Interviewer
on
Shane
Jacarius and Dylan, have, have they been able to practice yet? And if not, do you guys kind of have a timeline for when you want to see them out there?
Coach Beamer
Yeah, they're at practice and they're doing different parts of what they're able to, you know, throughout the day. As far as the timeline, again, we'll go on what the doctors tell us. And like, as I've said to you guys for the last month, Jordan, they're right on track and progressing nicely, I've
Mike
told you, for the last month. But again, they're at full participants as far as I know, so I don't, I don't know. Are you concerned at all?
Shane
I think the next question was about them too, just reworded a different way. So peak I'm concerned, Stewart, I'm not. That's kind of where I'm at. I, I don't feel like South Carolina needs to rush any of them. Right. I, I, I like how their schedule sets up as you got it up here. If for those that are just listening, we got Kent at home, Towson week two, Mississippi State week three, all three at home. So I, I feel like it's, you need you, you need these guys late in the season, you know, when you get into the meat of this schedule, brother, that's when you need those guys so rushing them to get out there for Kent State.
Mike
I.
Shane
Who cares, right? I. I want, I want a healthy steward out there. I want a healthy peak out there. So I'm not going to pressure coach in, in doing this.
Mike
A thumb. Spurs. Therms. Thumb. I. I can't even say that. Sub herms down. He said November 21, no contest.
Shane
Thumbs up, horns down.
Mike
Okay, good.
Shane
Yeah, yeah, we need more spaces in here.
Mike
Who's. Oh, that's Arkansas.
Shane
O. Oh. Oh, okay. Okay, wait.
Mike
Or is he talking about Carolina? Georgia. Oh.
Shane
Oh.
Mike
Either way, those would be two massive upsets.
Shane
Yeah, that would be a massive one.
Coach Lynch
Yeah.
Shane
Thumbs up, horns down. So I'd. That would probably be Arkansas beating them. So I had maybe. I don't know. Yeah, that would make sense. Arkasa hates Texas. Yeah, I can get behind that one. Yeah. I'm not ready for these word games late in the show, Mike.
Mike
And then we got one more on Beaver. It's a little bit long, but for. I bet a lot of people don't know this guy yet. Shane. Five star true freshman Darius Gray. He was rated as the number one interior offensive line prospect in the country. Now he's in his first fall. He wasn't even there for spring, but he may be starting the way Beamer's talking about him.
Shane
When we were talking over the winter, I said that Darius Gray kind of
Coach Sarkisian
had some Demetrius Knight energy just in
Shane
the way he carries himself. What have you seen from him, you know, so far in the start of camp and maturity wise, just kind of. How has he stood out so far?
Coach Beamer
Yeah, he's, he's pretty impressive. He really is, just as a person. I mean, you forget he wasn't even here for spring practice. He just showed up in the summertime and the summer that he had was elite. You know, what he was able to do physically in the summertime was really impressive as a true freshman. And then what he's able to do, was able to do or is able to do so far in practice is impressive. Now, don't get me wrong, it's four days in, there's a lot of football, and he's got a long ways to go. But the initial, the initial, initial impressions are really good. Just he's, he's, he's got his stuff together and it's an impressive guy on and off the field. I pulled him aside yesterday, Lulu, because we're throwing a lot at him and I told him, I'm like, look, man, like, I know we're throwing a lot at you right now and asking a lot of you. So if it gets to be too much, you know, mentally, it gets to be too much. Just, you know, make sure you communicate because you're the same person every day, but it's okay. And he's like, coach, I went to St Christopher's which is a great school in Richmond. Shout out Coach Clelland at St. Chris in Richmond. But his point was like, there's nothing that I, you know, I can handle it. And that's just who he is. He. He's the same person every day. And he's not on this like, emotional roller coaster of tough practices and, and tough challenges mentally. Just kind of goes about his business and it's going to be a really, really, really, really good player here.
Mike
Oh, Shane. I mean, you're not going to hear a head coach talk that impressively, I feel like, about a true freshman, particularly on the offensive line. That's why I wanted to play it. And we all know what a key position of need that is for the Gamecocks. I mean, it sounds like they got one hell of a first year lineman.
Shane
Yeah. Beamer's in love, ain't he?
Mike
I'll tell you who else is in love. Shade. Fred. Oh, bucks ribs going titted to Shane. If you don't agree, you're sleeping on the floor.
Shane
Yeah, Fred, I may have to put that camper in your front yard. So
Mike
did you see it? 10 and 2.
Shane
10. Oh, yeah. Honestly, there's a handful. I told you, brother. I feel like there are a lot of teams that if the stars align, they're gonna, they're gonna make a run. This is one of them. You know, Vegas clearly doesn't think it, but, I mean, I could see them going 10 and 2 here if. Trent. Yeah. How could you not? I'm not saying it happens, but you're asking. Can I see it? Yes, I could see it, Fred.
Mike
All right. Hey, the only last thing I got for you, Shane. No clip or anything, but, hey, early returns, it's. It's. Take it for what it's worth, right?
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
We're so early in camp, I don't even believe we've had a scrimmage yet in the Southeastern Conference. But the buzz out of Knoxville, Shane, George McIntyre lighting it up.
Shane
Yeah.
Mike
May have taken the early lead at a fall camp in the quarterback competition when after six months of hearing nothing but Faizal, Brandon here. Could it be George McIntyre, who's the starting quarterback at Tennessee, you know, who
Shane
Tennessee loves a quarterback that wins, so it could be Faison, it could be Big Mac, it could be sec Mike. It does not matter.
Venmo User
Really.
Shane
It does. And I feel like there's a part of you that deep down inside is rooting for maybe one as opposed to the other, but at the end of the day, man, it doesn't matter if you're winning football games. So, yeah, I, I'm. I'm kind of like, I trust Hypo. He's always been able to put a good quarterback out there, and if this thing's a competition and he needs some more time on it, I'm okay letting it marinate a little bit longer.
Mike
Do you really trust him, though, when.
Shane
Yes.
Mike
He, you know, he didn't start hidden Hooker.
Coach Sarkisian
Yeah.
Shane
Because he wasn't ready. He wasn't ready.
Mike
Joe Milton over him.
Shane
Yeah. That was probably some outside influence. He was young in the game. Probably had some boosters saying, we need, we need the, the missile arm out there.
Mike
And the whole time Joe Milton was out there, the afterwards you were saying, God, put Nico in there.
Shane
It was. Maybe it was more of a Joe Milton thing. We just. The thing about Joe Milton that drove me freaking batty was he did not run. He's one of the fastest quarterbacks to ever play at the University of Tennessee. And it did not click in there or they did not let him do it. But if he could have figured that part out, plus a little bit of the accuracy, I felt like Joe could have been great in this offense. But, yeah, I was constantly comparing him to Hinden Hooker, so it was going to fail in that comparison.
Mike
Well, I think. Who's going to win the quarterback job? Shane or. I've said this many times, they've got to get a guy, whoever can throw the downfield ball and throw it accurately.
Shane
Yep.
Mike
Because that's just so paramount to Hypo's offense. We've got. They've got the running ability, they've got the receivers, but if you can't hit that downfield throw, whether It's Faison or McIntyre, if you can't do it, I don't think you could play in this offense because it just, it, it handicaps you so much.
Shane
Yeah. And Max put on some weight, too. He's not as skinny as he used to be, so. And he's got legs. He's not, he's not one of these guys that's just gonna sit back there like a statue. So all three of these quarterbacks can move or at least get the chains moving. Now, Faison's probably going to do it a little better than everyone. We know that. But you're to your point if you have no downfield accuracy, and I'm not saying Faison and company doesn't, but you know, that's. That's the main thing that keeps this thing rolling.
Mike
Well, you know who's got all the accuracy in the world? Shane.
Shane
Who's that, cuz?
Mike
Liquid.
Shane
Ah, Liquid.
Mike
Let me. Yeah, here we go. Liquid gifted five members. Shane Sooner or Gator. That's a cool name. Jesse Sewell. Jesse Shout out Jesse Clay Johansson, Oklahoma man and 69 Texas cowboy. That's a cool name. And then we got loyal Glenn. Shout out Glenn Boomer.

This episode dives deep into fall camp updates across the SEC, but the main event is a breakdown of anonymous, unfiltered SEC coaches’ comments on the league’s quarterbacks, as compiled by ESPN. Mike and Shane analyze the fairness, accuracy, and implications of these coach takes, while also bringing in the latest news on eligibility drama, key injuries, fall camp competitions, and trending storylines from across the conference.
The banter is classic: light-hearted, Southern football authentic, peppered with jokes, fan shout-outs, and a touch of grill talk (this ain’t the tofu Big Ten podcast). If you want to go behind the curtain on what coaches really think about SEC QBs in 2026—this is your episode.
