Football Coach
You were going to get yours in later. You just weren't an early morning person.
Sports Commentator
Well, speaking of, where's those cookies at? I was supposed to get.
Football Coach
That's true. You got to come to Columbia.
Sports Commentator
Hey, I think we're going to do it this year. I was looking at. I was on that Tennessee, South Carolina game. Yeah, I think that one's going to be good. Pivotal matchup, no doubt. Absolutely.
Interviewer
Well, Coach, we really appreciate you stopping by. Yeah, we talked to really good friend of ours, Mr. Rusty Manziel and he Told us that he's very high on your team. And apparently he told you that and you said, hey, why don't you show up with that?
Football Coach
Basically, yeah, he did. I sent him back. The sh emoji is what I sent back. But I appreciate Rusty and glad he feels that way. No, I like our group. We got a lot of work to do. We know the challenge in this conference. I mean, there's so many good teams in this league. We know that. But I like the team that we. That we have coming back. A lot of guys that went through the battles of last season, but also a lot of guys that were there in 24 when we won nine games. And it's a mature group. It's an older group, it's an experienced group, and we're good in the right spots. Quarterback, wide receiver, pass rusher. You know, we have those guys and eager to see them continue to get better.
Sports Commentator
Well, you talk about moving the needle, bringing Briles in. I thought that was a big one. And I'm curious, you know, a guy like Lenores, been through a few ocs, what was it like? I guess in that initial conversation, like, this is what I'm good, you know, how can you walk me through that relationship?
Football Coach
Yeah, I think the 1. The connection with Kendall and Lenores has been awesome since Kendall got there. I think Linoris is in a really good spot physically and mentally right now. As we go into the season, when I had a decision, when I had a coordinator hire to make, I wasn't going to base it solely on who Lenora Sellers wanted, but certainly there was some communication with he and I in regards to coordinators. Maybe he knew Lenores is a football junkie, so he knows about coaches. So I told him. I'm like, look, man, if there's guys that you're interested in or think I should reach out to, send me their names. And it's funny, he sent me some names, and I was telling somebody earlier, we were flying Kendall and his wife into Columbia kind of secretly on a Sunday night just to look around and make sure it was a film fit for both of us. And I went and picked them up myself. And I was sitting at the private airport in Columbia waiting on the plane to land, and I got a text from Lenoris. And I looked at it, and it said, hey, coach, the more I look at coordinators, the more excited I am about this Kendall Briles guy from tcu. And I want to be like, well, I'll be damn, he's about to land type thing. But that was a good sign. And then when Kendall was on that trip, Kendall and Lenoris met. And I just left the room and let them talk for 20, 30 minutes. Just kind of get to know each other. But it was a. I felt good about it when we hired him, and I feel great about it now. Just the development that those guys have had since Kendall got hired in December and, And the way that he's helped our offense grow and get better and the way that he's helped Lenores. Our offense and Lenores both are in a good place right now.
Interviewer
Well, I think with literally any of these teams, you say you get the most out of the quarterback, you're going to have a good year. And I won't even use the potential word because I know coaches don't like potential. But Lenore Sellers and his massive talent, maximizing that talent, you know, how vital is that? Because I feel like people have forgotten just how great he, he can be.
Football Coach
Yeah, no, you're right. I mean, last year at media day, the questions about Lenores or Heisman trophy candidate, number one draft pick, all this stuff, and that's not the case right now. But he's a better player now than what he was last year when people were asking me all those questions. And you're right. I mean, I don't care what level, high school, college, NFL, you better have a quarterback in order to win football games. And we not only have one, but we got one that's going to be a three year starter. And that's really rare in today's time. A guy that's been in your program for four years too, so he's been through the battles, he's seen the ups and the downs and, and another reason, it gives me a lot of excitement about this upcoming season, just having a guy like that too.
Sports Commentator
I always feel like you guys are kind of an outlier, you know, I mean, these days and age, you have a bad season, you. You got kids jumping ship. It's. It was the exact opposite. I mean, I've seen a lot of lists saying, hey, this guy's going to, you know, this would be a good fit. And it's like he wouldn't even question.
Football Coach
Yeah.
Sports Commentator
So what that locker room, I gotta, I gotta imagine the locker room is coming together, us against the world. Are you kind of sensing that coming in this season?
Football Coach
Yeah. Appreciate you saying that. I mean, that's one thing I'm really proud of. I think it's just a testament to the culture at our place. Because you have a disappointing season Guys leave for individual reasons. I just want to go somewhere else and get paid. Guys leave because they're like, man, we just went 4 and 8. I don't want to come back to somewhere that we didn't have a good season. They all came back because they won. They're being treated the right way. They, They, I think, know how close we were in 25 to being better than what we were. They know what kind of team we have coming back in 26. And certainly there's just been a quiet, kind of a quiet confidence with our group that we know nobody's going to pick us very high. That's okay. We, Nobody, nobody's talking about us. That's great. Just kind of leave us alone, let us work and know that we've got a lot of older guys on our team that, you know, still have, if you will, bloody wounds from last season that haven't forgotten about that and, and, and are very, very, very intentional and driven about making things right.
Sports Commentator
Well, you think about some of the success in this league. It's. It's older teams. Yeah, it's. It's guys that are knowing. I mean, these, these guys have worked together so long. No question.
Football Coach
Not just in this league, but you look at the last three national champions, look at the number of seniors on those teams. It's a ton. And not to make excuses, we had. I think we had four seniors last year. That started for us. That's hard. And this year we're going to have more than that. You know, Indiana had a ton. Michigan, Ohio State, they've always. Those three teams had a lot. A really good team, don't get me wrong. But they were an old. And I think that's the name of the game in college football, especially nowadays, national champs.
Sports Commentator
That's what Beamer said.
Football Coach
This is Beat Kent State, week one.
Interviewer
Hey, how disappointed are you that the Netflix documentary didn't return? You were one of the stars of it. I was one of the stars of it. I thought I would be like, a huge deal after it. I think I'm less popular than I was before. But has it helped you at all with recruiting? Like, people get to know your family and you.
Football Coach
Yeah. I thought you crushed it. Personally.
Interviewer
Shane's never told me that this.
Football Coach
It was. He's got to keep you humble. No, it was a huge impact. I was disappointed that there hasn't been a season two. Hopefully there will be, but we continue. And I talked about it in the main room earlier, like, we continue to see the impacts of that Netflix show that with recruits that we watch the Netflix show of what I've had a recruit's mom tell me. I've watched it four times now all the way through. And, and I love this. Or I'll have a recruit that'll come. It happens every recruiting weekend. A mom will come up to me. Hey, coach, we watched episode, whatever it is, I think for when you do the whole Fantasia thing with your wife in the locker room. Are you going to do that tonight? So we continue to see it. I mean I was traveling in the Caribbean in January and a guy or February and a guy in TSA looked at me and was like, you look familiar. And then he's like the Netflix show on sec. So I think we continue to see the impact of that. And, and it was a great looking into our program. And the reason so is just because we were who we. We were who we are.
Sports Commentator
Yeah.
Football Coach
In that we didn't like put on a show when the cameras are on. Like cameras on, cameras off. Like that was us. And it's. And it was real.
Sports Commentator
And the growth. I mean I think about when you first stepped on that campus to now we're watching what a $350 Million, you know, renovations going on. I mean it's just surreal what has happened since the time you've been there.
Football Coach
Yeah, it is. The job has changed. When you talk about transfer portal Rev Share Nil. But then certainly with the stadium enhancements and everything else that's going on, it's awesome. So when you get to Columbia, hopefully this fall it'll be new and improved Williams Bryce. And then when you come back in 2027, you better just wait till you see that in 2027 because 26 will be better. 2027, look out.
Interviewer
The main feedback I got from the Netflix documentary, everybody reached out, they said, hey, I didn't realize you were that fat. I thought it was the thin one, but that's all I got from it.
Football Coach
That's not good. I did have the other day, I was at a wedding and somebody came up to me and, and a male and complimented me on the Netflix documentary and then complimented me from the scene where I'm running. He complimented my calves, which. That was a first. Another male complimenting my calves at a wedding. So that's the power of the Netflix show.
Sports Commentator
I love that Speed limit one y' all did. That one was.
Football Coach
That was. Yeah, the Office parody. That was good. One last thing for you, Coach Number Beat it.
Sports Commentator
If. Well, let's just stick on that, that, that theme. If we're at the zero yard line. All right, let's say Nick Harbor's there.
Football Coach
Yep.
Sports Commentator
All right. And we got 100 yards to the next goal. Y what yard line do I need to be at to beat him?
Football Coach
Like 12 yards out?
Reese's Commercial Voice
10 yards?
Football Coach
Probably. I'm thinking more like 60 or 65 yards out, I think. I think for most human beings you probably need to be about that far cuz he's going to run you down.
Sports Commentator
Yeah, I'm thinking 12 from the next goal.
Football Coach
Yeah, that's kind of where I am.
Sports Commentator
Yeah.
Interviewer
Thank you so much, coach. Best of luck.
Football Coach
Y' all are awesome, man.
Sports Commentator
Thank you.
Football Coach
Keep up the great work.
Interviewer
Thank you.
