Good Saturday morning to you, Ben Ferguson with you. And these are some of the stories that you may have missed that we talked about this week on the 47 Morning Update.
Unknown
First up, the Trump administration announcing a probe into Harvard's anti Semitism and it could cost the university billions of dollars in federal funds.
Ben Ferguson
Also, you may remember the big thing signal gate last week. Well, we've got poll numbers that now show it was a big flop for the Dems and the media trying to make America turn on Donald Trump, his poll numbers holding strong. And finally, other countries are in a panic right now and are running to with Donald Trump and his administration yes. Over the tariffs that are clearly working. I'll give you the list and what they're doing coming up in just a moment. But first, make sure if you're new to the show, you hit that subscribe or auto download button right now so you never miss an episode of the 47 Morning Update that starts right now.
Story number one.
Unknown
There are two basic questions that American taxpayers should be asking when it comes to universities like Harvard. Number one, why are your federal tax dollars going there, especially when Harvard University's endowment at the end of June of 2024, their fiscal year was valued at $53.2 billion. By the way, that represented a $2.5 billion increase from the previous fiscal year. The second question is why is the government giving 9 billion in federal funds to a university that also has anti Semitic tendencies? Well, both of those questions are now being answered by the Trump administration as they are probing Harvard for exactly that anti Semitism and looking at the real possibility of pulling the 9 billion in federal funds. The Trump administration announcing on Monday that they are looking into Harvard over its chronic problem with anti Semitism, placing the 9 billion in federal grants at risk at the nation's most elite academic institution home. Harvard's campus has become increasingly hostile to Jews in recent years as radical anti Israel activists have become, well, one to one basically with a university and their mindset. Especially since the Hamas terror attacks of October 7, which dozens of student groups blamed on Israel on campus, the university has struggled to respond. In fact, the former Harvard President Claudine Gay could not even commit to Congress that the university would take action if there were calls for genocide of Jews on campus. She resigned weeks later in disgrace. Three separate federal departments announced a joint investigation on Monday of Harvard. In a press statement saying this today, the Department of Education, Health and Human Services and the U.S. general Services Administration announced a comprehensive review of federal contracts and grants at Harvard University and its affiliates. This review is part of the ongoing efforts of the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti Semitism. The task force will review More than $255 million in contracts between Harvard University, its affiliates and the federal government. The review also includes more than $8.7 billion in multi year grant commitments to Harvard University and its affiliates to ensure the university is in compliance with federal federal regulations, including its civil rights responsibilities. Harvard has served as a symbol of the American dream for generations, the pinnacle aspiration for students all over the world to work hard and earn admission to the storied institution. Harvard's failure to protect students on campus from anti Semitic discrimination, all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry, has put its reputation in serious jeopardy. Harvard can right these and restore itself to a campus dedicated to academic excellence and truth seeking, where all students feel safe on its campus. The Trump administration took a similar approach in addressing anti Semitism on the campus of Columbia University, which quickly agreed to make major policy changes, though it later seemed to backtrack privately after the inaction of the Biden administration, which was reluctant to confront its own radical base about anti Jewish bigotry. Donald Trump clearly has no problem confronting anti Semitism on college campuses, clearly making sure that every Jewish student feels safe no matter what campus they're on in America. As for Harvard, if they keep up their anti Semitic ways, it's going to cost them billions of dollars.

Next, story number two.
Over the last 10 days, it's been very clear that the Democrats wanted to hurt Donald Trump and they saw an opportunity. They went all in on something they dubbed Signal Gate, demanding that Donald Trump either fire or that leaders resign in his apparatus. Why? Because they were killing terrorists and had a message app open called Signal, where inadvertently the Atlantic had one of their big dogs that actually got on the message thread. Now, they went all in, hoping the American people be shocked by this accident. And it clearly was a mistake, no one saying that it wasn't. But the reality is the American people are smarter than the radical left and the media attacks on the Trump administration. How do we know this? Well, CBS News poll has found that the president's approval rating is doing just fine at 50%. The poll released on Sunday morning, surveyed more than 2,600Americans from across the country on March 27th and the 28th after Signal Gate exploded. And what did we find out? Well, the vast majority of respondents said that last week's Signal incident, in which the national security adviser, Mike Waltz accidentally added the Atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg into an encrypted group chat where plans to attack terrorists were discussed, was, quote, serious, but it did not affect Donald Trump's job approval. Translation, the American people actually care more about the fact that Donald Trump is killing terrorists. Who's on an encrypted chat conversation. So the moral of the story is this. The Democrats are going to keep trying to take down Donald Trump any way they can. But it also seems the American people are onto their game. They don't trust the media and they sure as hell don't trust the Democratic Party.
And here is story number if you.
Watch the media today, they will tell you that the tariffs are A disaster that Donald Trump should flinch and say sorry and immediately go back to the old way of doing business. That is the story they want you to believe, but the reality is the tariffs are already working. One prime example is Vietnamese Deputy prime minister accompanied by major entourage of Vietnamese business executives announced an emergency trip to Washington D.C. on Wednesday, quietly. That is the same day that Donald Trump revealed his Liberation Day tariff schedule, which included a 46% duty on imports from Vietnam. The Vietnamese delegation, we're now being told, is scheduled to arrive on Sunday and remain in Washington D.C. until April 14 when it will pay an official visit to then Cuba. The Vietnamese prime minister will be accompanied by executives from companies such as Vietnam Airlines, jsc Invent a capital Group. The delegation hopes to meet with Trump officials and beg basically for all of these tariffs to be brought back down. They are wanting to, quote, make a deal. The business community in Vietnam is panicked and they are panicked that the government is not doing enough to cool the response from Donald Trump. The prime minister's visit, they claim, will pave the way for real negotiations leading to a more balanced agreement easing the burden on businesses amid the current tough business landscape in Vietnam. That coming from the Saigon Times on Thursday. They also reported that Vietnamese analysts and government officials expected about a 10% tear from Trump. The rate of 46 that was revealed by Trump at the White House is when the panic set in. Why? Vietnam is among the world's most trade dependent nations with exports equivalent to about 90% of economic output and counts the US as its most significant customer. Sales have surged since the trade war that broke out during Trump's first term when businesses sought to relocate away from China and Vietnam became an alternative base for production aimed at American markets. American customers buy about a third of what Vietnam exports to the entire world, creating a massive trade surplus of more than $123 billion. This appears to have factored into the tariff rate revealed by President Trump on Wednesday and that why Vietnam is, well, freaking out and running to America tried to quote, de escalate and come up with a fair deal for both countries. The moral of the story is this. Vietnam would have never called this emergency meeting if it wasn't for Donald Trump and what he did at the White House on Liberation Day.

The 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson
Episode: Harvard's Billion-Dollar Dilemma, Trump's Approval Unshaken on Signal Gate & Vietnam's Panic over Tariffs
Release Date: April 5, 2025
In this episode of The 47 Morning Update, host Ben Ferguson delves into three pivotal stories shaping the current political and economic landscape: the Trump administration's investigation into Harvard University over allegations of anti-Semitism, the resilience of President Trump's approval ratings amidst the Signal Gate controversy, and the escalating panic in Vietnam in response to U.S. tariffs. Ferguson provides in-depth analysis, exclusive insights, and compelling commentary that offer listeners a comprehensive understanding of these critical issues.
Timestamp: [01:32] – [06:43]
Ben Ferguson opens the episode by highlighting the Trump administration's recent announcement of a comprehensive investigation into Harvard University’s handling of anti-Semitism on campus. This probe threatens to jeopardize up to $9 billion in federal funding allocated to the prestigious institution.
Key Points:
Federal Investigation: Three federal departments—the Department of Education, Health and Human Services, and the U.S. General Services Administration—have launched a joint investigation into Harvard's compliance with federal regulations, particularly concerning civil rights and anti-Semitic discrimination.
Financial Implications: Harvard’s substantial endowment of $53.2 billion (as of June 2024) has seen a $2.5 billion increase from the previous fiscal year. The potential withdrawal of $9 billion in federal grants poses a significant financial risk to the university.
Campus Climate: The university has faced increasing hostility towards Jewish students, especially following the Hamas terror attacks on October 7. Student groups have vocally criticized Israel, leading to a strained and divisive campus environment.
Leadership Response: Former Harvard President Claudine Gay resigned after failing to assure Congress of the university’s commitment to addressing anti-Semitism, reflecting poorly on Harvard's leadership and response mechanisms.
Notable Quote:
Ben Ferguson emphasizes the gravity of the situation:
"Harvard's failure to protect students on campus from anti-Semitic discrimination, all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry, has put its reputation in serious jeopardy."
[03:15]
Analysis: Ferguson draws parallels to the Trump administration's previous actions against Columbia University, praising the administration's proactive stance on combating anti-Semitism—an approach he contrasts with the Biden administration's perceived inaction. He underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring that educational institutions uphold civil rights and maintain safe environments for all students.
Timestamp: [06:43] – [11:31]
The second major topic Ferguson addresses is the so-called "Signal Gate" incident, wherein sensitive discussions within the Trump administration were inadvertently exposed due to a mix-up involving the encrypted messaging app Signal.
Key Points:
Incident Overview: An accidental addition of Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to an encrypted group chat used by national security adviser Mike Waltz sparked controversy. The chat contained discussions about strategies to combat terrorism, leading Democrats and the media to seize upon the mistake.
Democratic Response: Democrats labeled the incident as a significant breach, demanding accountability from President Trump, including the firing or resignation of key administration members. The narrative aimed to portray the Trump administration as careless with national security.
Public Perception: Contrary to Democratic expectations, a CBS News poll revealed that President Trump’s approval rating remained robust at 50%. The majority of respondents viewed the Signal incident as serious but did not attribute any negative impact to Trump’s overall job approval.
Notable Quote:
Ferguson highlights the public’s perspective:
"The American people actually care more about the fact that Donald Trump is killing terrorists. Who's on an encrypted chat conversation."
[07:45]
Poll Insights:
Approval Ratings: The CBS News poll, conducted with over 2,600 Americans, indicated that while Signal Gate was deemed serious, it did not diminish Trump’s support among the populace.
Public Trust: Ferguson points out a growing distrust in the media and the Democratic Party, suggesting that the American public is less susceptible to partisan attacks and more focused on tangible outcomes like national security efforts.
Analysis: Ferguson argues that the Democrats’ aggressive stance on Signal Gate backfired, revealing a disconnect between their strategies and the public's priorities. The resilience of Trump’s approval ratings, despite the controversy, underscores a bipartisan skepticism towards mainstream media narratives and a preference for direct action over political maneuvering.
Timestamp: [08:44] – [11:31]
The final story delves into Vietnam’s urgent diplomatic response to the United States’ imposition of tariffs, specifically the 46% duty on imports from Vietnam announced by President Trump on Liberation Day.
Key Points:
Tariff Announcement: President Trump revealed a substantial tariff rate of 46% on Vietnamese imports, significantly higher than the anticipated 10%. This unexpected increase has sent shockwaves through Vietnam’s trade-dependent economy.
Vietnamese Delegation’s Response: In response to the tariffs, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister, along with business executives from major companies like Vietnam Airlines and JSC Invent Capital Group, embarked on an emergency trip to Washington D.C. The delegation aims to negotiate a more balanced trade agreement and alleviate the economic strain caused by the tariffs.
Economic Implications: Vietnam, with exports constituting approximately 90% of its economic output and the U.S. as its largest trading partner, faces severe repercussions. The surge in tariffs threatens to dismantle the robust trade surplus Vietnam enjoys with the U.S., which stands at over $123 billion.
Strategic Concerns: The trade war initiated during Trump’s first term positioned Vietnam as an alternative production base to China for American markets. However, the aggressive tariff measures jeopardize this strategic advantage, prompting urgent diplomatic efforts to restore economic stability.
Notable Quote:
Ferguson underscores the urgency of Vietnam’s actions:
"Vietnam would have never called this emergency meeting if it wasn't for Donald Trump and what he did at the White House on Liberation Day."
[10:12]
Analysis: Ferguson explains that the drastic tariff increase not only threatens Vietnam’s economic health but also strains U.S.-Vietnam relations. The emergency delegation signifies a critical attempt by Vietnam to salvage its trade relations and prevent long-term economic damage. Ferguson suggests that Trump’s aggressive tariff policy, while aimed at protecting American industries, has inadvertently pushed key allies like Vietnam into a corner, seeking renegotiation to mitigate the adverse effects.
Conclusion
In this episode, Ben Ferguson provides a thorough examination of significant developments impacting higher education, political dynamics, and international trade. From the Trump administration’s relentless effort to address anti-Semitism within elite institutions like Harvard, the steadfast support for President Trump amidst political scandals, to the ripple effects of U.S. tariffs on global trade relationships with nations like Vietnam, Ferguson offers listeners a nuanced perspective on these pressing issues. His insightful commentary and inclusion of pertinent quotes and data equip the audience with a deeper understanding of the forces shaping America today.
