Questioner
Why didn't you tell US allies in Europe and Asia, like Japan, about the war before attacking Iran? So we are very confused about Japanese.
Respondent
Well, one thing, you don't want to signal too much. You know, when we go in, we went in very hard and we didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise in Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor?

Good Saturday morning. Nice to have you with us on the 47 Morning Update.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
And we've got two big stories for you. First up, Donald Trump's administration has launched
Co-Host or Main Narrator
an investigation of states that are mandating health insurance cover abortions. Why are they investigating these states? We'll explain it in just a moment.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
Plus, Saudi Arabia uniting the Arab world against Iran.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
What did they have to do to make this happen? I explained that as well.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
It's the 47 Morning Update and it starts right now.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
The Trump administration said on Thursday that it has launched an investigation into 13 states that require state regulated health insurance plans to cover abortion.
Guest Analyst or Expert
This is a major development and it
Co-Host or Main Narrator
goes right to the core of one of the biggest cultural and constitutional battles
Guest Analyst or Expert
in America right now.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
We're talking about states like California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, states where the
Guest Analyst or Expert
government has said, if you want insurance,
Co-Host or Main Narrator
abortion coverage is mandatory with no exceptions.
Guest Analyst or Expert
And the Trump administration is now saying that may be illegal. Now, at the center of this fight
Co-Host or Main Narrator
is something called the Weldon Amendment.
Guest Analyst or Expert
It's a federal law that has been
Co-Host or Main Narrator
on the books for years. It explicitly says the government cannot discriminate against healthcare entities, doctors, insurers, employers who refuse to provide or pay for or refer for abortions. In other words, you cannot force Americans to violate their conscience.
Guest Analyst or Expert
But here's where it gets serious.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
The Trump administration's Department of Health and Human Services says these states mandates may be doing exactly that, forcing employers and individuals into plans that cover abortion even if it violates their religious beliefs. And according to officials, that could put billions of dollars in federal health care funding at risk if states are found in violation. Now, let's talk about the scale of this. There are 13 states currently under the investigation. These laws affect millions of Americans enrolled in state regulated insurance plans. Federal protections aren't just one law. There are actually more than two dozen federal statutes protecting religious and moral objections in health care. And here's the key stat that matters politically. For decades under the Hyde Amendment, federal taxpayer dollars have been barred from funding abortion. That policy has had bipartisan support for decades. President Trump didn't just maintain it, he strengthened it, signing executive action to enforce it across the federal government and most importantly, ensure taxpayer money is not used for elective abortions. And this is where the Trump agenda comes into focus. From day one, the administration has made it crystal clear, we protect life, we defend religious liberty and stop government coercion. The White House has said President Trump is committed to protecting the unborn and restoring conscience rights across federal policy. This investigation, they say, is a direct extension of that promise. Now, the other part of this debate is how officials are actually fighting over it. Framing the arguments, Paula Stannard, who heads the HHS Office for Civil Rights, put it bluntly. Health care entities are protected from paying
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
for abortion contrary to conscience, period.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
That's not ambiguous. That's a line in the sand.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
And conservatives are rallying behind this move as well.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
Pro life and religious liberty advocates have
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
argued for years that these mandates are
Co-Host or Main Narrator
government overreach, forcing faith based organizations, small businesses and individuals into impossible choices. Many conservative leaders have said in response
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
to policies like this, quote, no American should be forced to choose between their
Co-Host or Main Narrator
faith and the law or the government should not compel participation in and abortion. And the White House said this, conscience rights are civil rights. And that last point is key because what the Trump administration is doing here is reframing this entire debate.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
And that is brilliant, not just as
Co-Host or Main Narrator
an abortion policy, but as a civil rights issue. Now, politically, this is a very strategic move.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
It draws a crystal clear contrast that
Co-Host or Main Narrator
Republicans and the Trump administration are defending religious liberty and individual choice, and Democrats are expanding mandates and government control in healthcare, forcing you to actually pay for coverage for abortions, even if you don't
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
agree with it religiously.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
And it puts Democrats finally on defense because they now have to explain why someone should be forced to pay for something they morally and religiously oppose. Even critics of the administration are admitting what's happening here. Some Democratic officials are already calling the investigation politically motivated. But that also shows how high stakes this debate really is. Because if the Trump administration wins, you could see three different things happen. Number one, states would be forced to roll back abortion mandates. Number two, federal funding battles tied to compliance would then be up for real debate. And thirdly, and potentially, you could have a Supreme Court showdown on the limits of states powers to mandate abortion be a part of healthcare. The bottom line is this. This isn't just another policy fight. This is about whether the government can force.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
You can force your business, can force your church, can force your family to
Co-Host or Main Narrator
fund something that violates your moral beliefs and President Trump is making it very clear with this investigation that the line will not be crossed without a major fight.
Ben Ferguson
Next story number two.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
Saudi Arabia has now united the Arab world against Iran.
Guest Analyst or Expert
Trust has completely been shattered is what they said in new statements as the government of Saudi Arabia held a large level meeting with representatives of other victims of Iranian bombings in the past month, issuing a joint statement condemning Tehran for widespread drone and missile attacks on civilian sites in over a dozen countries. Participating in the meeting were the foreign ministers of Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, Syria and Lebanon as well. On Thursday, the Saudi Press Agency published a joint statement from the participants demanding an immediate end to bombings by Iran's terrorist Islamic Revolutionary Guard and warning Iran to stop disrupting commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been at war with Israel and the United States since February 28th. President Trump announced Operation Epic Fury to eliminate Iran's ability to pose a threat to its neighbors.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
Iran is the world's most prolific state sponsor of terrorism funding, the irgc, in addition to several other terrorist proxies including Hezbollah, Hamas, the Yemeni Houthi gangs, the
Co-Host or Main Narrator
Palestinian Islamic Jihad and several Iraqi Shiite militias, among others.
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
On the first day of Operation Epic Fury, Trump announced an airstrike had eliminated the supreme leader. America and Israel have eliminated, as you know, dozens of senior Iranian leadership since. But in response to the military campaign, Iran has used its missiles and drone capabilities to target its Arab and Muslim neighbors. Among the countries Iran has targeted striking civilian areas are many of the participants in the meeting late Wednesday. Iran has also repeatedly targeted Israel and struck Cyprus and Iranian officials have denied
Co-Host or Main Narrator
targeting nations such as Turkey, though the
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
IRGC has openly struck Saudi Arabia and the UAE allegedly because they're not actively hostile towards America and Israel.
Co-Host or Main Narrator
Now, following the meeting of the Gulf
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
Corporation Council countries and other guests, the
Co-Host or Main Narrator
the government of Saudi Arabia also published
Co-Host or Secondary Narrator
a joint statement by the participating countries condemning Iran. The nations, according to Saudi Press Agency, affirmed their condemnation and said these deliberate Iranian attacks with ballistic missiles and drones which targeted residential areas, civilian infrastructure including oil facilities as well as airports, residential buildings and and diplomatic premises, was unacceptable. The ministers further affirmed that such attacks could not be justified under any pretexts or in any manner whatsoever. The text continued that Iran must immediately halt its attacks and affirm the necessity of respecting international law, international humanitarian law and the principles of good neighborliness. Yes, this is now where we are in the Middle east as all of these countries seem to be finally realizing they can't just look the other way with what Iran is doing. And now they're joining with the US
Co-Host or Main Narrator
to hold them accountable.

This episode frames the Trump administration’s moves as decisive, culturally loaded, and politically strategic—both in defending religious liberty domestically and responding to Iran’s widening aggression internationally. The abortion insurance mandate probe is contextualized as a civil rights battle, potentially ending with the Supreme Court clarifying the line between state and federal powers. In foreign affairs, the coverage highlights a rare Middle Eastern consensus driven by escalating Iranian attacks and a coordinated U.S. response under Trump’s leadership.
Listeners are left with a clear message: major policy, constitutional, and geopolitical battles are underway—and the Trump administration intends to fight them on every front.
