For the last 7 years, my overlanding setup has revolved around a bed rack and rooftop tent. It’s taken me on incredible trips, helped me learn what actually matters on the trail, and honestly shaped the way I camp and travel. But lately, I’ve realized my needs have changed… and that’s why I’m making a pretty massive switch. In this video, I talk about why I’m moving away from my traditional RTT setup and diving headfirst into an Alibaba camper build for my Nissan Frontier. From comfort and convenience to weather protection, storage, faster camp setup, and long-term travel goals, I break down the real reasons behind the change — including some of the frustrations that finally pushed me over the edge.I also share what I’m hoping this camper setup will improve, some concerns I still have, and why I think a lot of overlanders eventually reach this same crossroads after years on the road. This isn’t about saying rooftop tents are bad. I still think they make sense for a ton of people. But for where I’m at right now, I think a lightweight camper might be the next evolution of my setup. If you’ve ever debated RTT vs camper, are curious about Alibaba campers, or you’re just interested in the future of this build, this video should give you a pretty honest look at where my head is at.Products mentioned in the video:Vevor Toilet: https://amzn.to/4wzwuENMy Top Oak Roof Top Tent-Amazon: https://amzn.to/4oVxqz8Or, if you prefer to buy direct: https://tidd.ly/4u56K1h#Overlanding #TruckCamper #NissanFrontier #AlibabaCamper #RoofTopTent #CampingBuild #OverlandSetup #TruckBuild #OverlandCamping #AdventureRigA huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. Technology has completely changed the overlanding world—but is that a good thing, or are we losing something along the way? In this episode, I dive into the pros and cons of modern technology in overlanding, from GPS navigation and Starlink internet to power stations, fridges, apps, vehicle options, and all the gadgets that make life on the trail easier.I talk about how tech can improve safety, comfort, communication, and convenience, but also how it can add cost, distractions, complexity, and sometimes take away from the raw adventure many of us fell in love with in the first place. Has overlanding become too dependent on gear and screens, or is technology simply the natural evolution of the hobby?Whether you’re a minimalist who prefers paper maps and basic gear or someone building the ultimate high-tech rig, this is a conversation worth having. In this episode, I’m talking about something that makes overlanding so much more than just vehicles, gear, and remote campsites—the people. Over the years, I’ve realized that one of the most powerful parts of this lifestyle is the sense of community that comes with it. Whether it’s helping someone on the trail, sharing advice around a campfire, or connecting instantly with someone who understands your passion for adventure, overlanding has a way of bringing people together like family.I’ll share my thoughts on why the overlanding community is so unique, how these shared experiences create real bonds, and why the friendships built through this lifestyle often become just as meaningful as the journeys themselves. If you’ve ever felt that special connection with fellow overlanders, this episode will hit home.A huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. In this episode, I’m talking about something I don’t think gets enough attention in the overlanding world—what happens when the excitement starts to fade and it just… isn’t as fun anymore.I’ve been there. What starts as an incredible adventure—building your rig, planning trips, chasing new places—can slowly turn into something that feels more like work than escape. The gear gets overwhelming, the expectations get higher, and before you know it, you’re exhausted instead of recharged. In this episode, I break down some of the common parts of overlanding that can create burnout or exhaustion and some ways to avoid them. Especially if you're newer to this hobby, you need to be aware of some of the challenges you might face. If you’ve ever felt like your trips aren’t hitting the same, or your build has started to feel more like a burden than a passion, or you're just not sure to expect while overlanding, this one’s for you.A huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. When you’re building out an overlanding rig, the excitement to just start bolting parts on can be overwhelming… but trust me, a solid plan makes all the difference. In this episode, I walk through my strategy for planning an overland build the right way before turning a single wrench.I talk about the importance of documenting dimensions, measuring twice (or three times!) and cutting once, and why creating a simple spreadsheet or Google Doc can save you tons of headaches. I’ll show you how I map out every step of a build so I know exactly what needs to happen — and in what order — to keep the project moving forward smoothly.Toward the end, I share one of my favorite practical tips: laying out all the gear and components you already own on the floor so you can visualize the setup, talk through your plan, and update your drawings based on real-world space and fitment. Finally, I explain why ordering everything you’ll need before the build begins can help you avoid frustrating delays once you’re in the middle of the project. If you’re planning your first overland build — or just want to be more strategic with your next round of mods — this video will help you stay organized, save time, and build with confidence. As mentioned in the vid, here are some of the items shown or discussed:Link to order the camper I'm getting with accessories (this just sends the order to HiperLion but then you'll actually purchase through Alibaba-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING147 for your choice in $170 in free accessories): https://hiperlionoutdoor.com/product/build-your-complete-setup-in-one-page/200W CIGS Solar Panel I'm going to run: https://amzn.to/4pA8AnTMy 3000W Inverter: https://amzn.to/3Zi23DuRemote Power Box with anderson plugs (order this early because shipping is slow): https://amzn.to/3P6638nFancy toilet for camper: https://amzn.to/3PFKv2C100 Ft of 12 Gauge Wire for misc wiring: https://amzn.to/4c6CWeu14 gauge quick connects: https://amzn.to/3ZFElBn40 Ft. of 0 Gauge Wire: https://amzn.to/3ZDkN0vTrolling Motor Mounts: https://amzn.to/4sim5dZMictuning Switch Panel: https://amzn.to/4sjHlAnLiTime 320AH Heated Mini LifePo4 Battery (will probably run 2): https://amzn.to/4rGiLsdBougeRV Sensor Lights for inside camper: https://amzn.to/4uBN4TwA huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Z1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGClick here to join the Patreon community for exclusive content and access to the Discord channel: https://www.patreon.com/allthingsoverlandingClick here to get a patches or stickers: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/shop/For a full list of my gear, check out this page for quick reference links: https://allthingsoverlanding.com/gear/Looking for budget light bars, rock lights, and LED strips for your rig? Overlanding used to mean taking a week or two off work, loading up the truck, and trying to squeeze as much adventure as possible into a limited amount of vacation time. But things are changing. In this episode, I talk about the new overlanding lifestyle — working from anywhere. Thanks to remote work, better mobile internet, Starlink, and more flexible jobs, a growing number of people are finding ways to travel longer, explore more, and still earn a living while on the road. Some are younger adventurers prioritizing experiences over traditional milestones, while others are professionals who have built careers that finally allow them to work remotely and fund extended travel. Either way, the result is the same: more people are blending work, adventure, and travel into one lifestyle.I’ll break down what’s driving this shift, how people are making it work financially, and what it might mean for the future of overlanding. If you’ve ever wondered how people manage to travel longer while still paying the bills, this conversation might give you a new perspective on what’s possible.A huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. For a long time, people have asked me the same question:“Can you actually make money as an overlanding content creator?”In this episode, I’m breaking it ALL down.I’m sharing how much money I make creating overlanding content — and more importantly, where it actually comes from. This isn’t just YouTube ad revenue. I’m talking about every single revenue stream that supports this channel and my overlanding lifestyle. In this video I cover:💰 YouTube AdSense revenue🤝 Brand partnerships & sponsored gear🔗 Affiliate income (Amazon, direct brands, etc.)🎙 Podcast monetization🛒 Product links & commissions🧢 Merch and other creative revenue streams📈 How income fluctuates month to monthI also talk honestly about what’s realistic, what took the longest to build, and what I would focus on if I were starting from zero today. If you’re thinking about starting an overlanding YouTube channel…If you’re curious how gear reviewers actually make money…Or if you just want transparency about what this lifestyle really pays…This episode is for you.Creating content around overlanding, camping gear, truck builds, and travel has been an incredible experience — but it’s definitely not as simple as “post videos and get rich.” I’m sharing the full picture so you can see what’s possible. If you find this helpful, consider subscribing for more real-world overlanding content, gear reviews, and honest breakdowns of what this lifestyle actually looks like behind the scenes.Let me know in the comments what surprised you most 👇A huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. Over the years, my camping and overlanding setup has gone through some serious evolution. I’ve slept in ground tents, tried hammock camping, spent plenty of nights in a roof top tent, and now I’m making the move to a hard-sided pop-up camper. In this episode, I’m breaking down my real-world experience with each setup — the good, the bad, and the things you don’t always think about until you’re out on the trail. Each style of camping has its place, and I’ve learned that what works best really depends on how you travel, where you camp, and what level of comfort and convenience you’re looking for. I talk through the biggest pros and cons of each setup including cost, setup time, weather protection, mobility, storage, and overall usability during overlanding trips.I also share why my needs have changed over time and what ultimately pushed me toward switching to a hard-sided camper. This isn’t about saying one setup is better than another — it’s about helping you understand the tradeoffs so you can decide what fits your style of adventure. If you’ve ever debated between a ground tent, hammock, roof top tent, or camper setup, this video should give you a realistic perspective based on actual use, not just specs or marketing claims.Let me know in the comments what setup you currently run and whether you’ve ever considered switching. If you’re thinking of adding mods to your truck but don't want to kill your MPG — this episode is for you.In this video, I break down which truck mods actually hurt fuel economy the most, and which ones aren’t as bad as people make them out to be. I’m talking from real-world experience, based on years of doing this — things like tires, lifts, roof racks, armor, bumpers, and all the “overlanding” upgrades we love to bolt on.I go through:* The biggest MPG killers most people don’t think about* Mods that hurt MPG more than expected* Why weight, rolling resistance, and aerodynamics matter more than you think* I also total up the weight of all the mods on my truck and talk about additional forms of wear and tear that can negatively impact the longevity of your vehicleThis isn’t about telling you not to mod your truck — it’s about helping you make smarter decisions, especially if your rig still sees daily-driver duty or long road trips. If you’re building an overland rig, weekend adventure truck, or just trying to balance capability with fuel costs, this video will help you understand where the MPG losses really come from — and how to minimize them.Drop a comment with your setup and MPG changes, and let’s compare notes.A huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. If you’re getting into overlanding—or you’ve been doing it for a while and don’t want to waste money—this video is for you.In this episode, I’m breaking down the overlanding mods that give you the most bang for your buck. These are upgrades I’ve actually used, tested, and used out on real trips—not just stuff that looks cool on Instagram. Some mods are absolutely worth the money, while others can wait (or be skipped entirely).I talk through what I’d prioritize if I were starting over today, where you’ll get the biggest improvement in comfort, capability, and reliability, and how to build a setup that lets you travel more instead of constantly chasing the next expensive upgrade.Whether you’re building a budget overland rig, slowly upgrading over time, or just trying to figure out what really matters, this conversation should help you make smarter decisions with your money.
