It was a long week for me and Drew, at least.

Yeah. Like, welcome back from Ohio. Real long RV went. Got all the way there and back.

It did ac. We thought the AC wasn't working.

One. Yeah. One for two. One for two on the Ohio trips in the rv. Not bad.

It actually tried to bring back some extra stuff.

When like, like the gas pump Tyler drove off with.

It's a meth addict gas station at, like, 3 in the morning.

So we pumps the gas. We go inside. Tyler's like. We're driving. We're like, quarter mile down the road. He looks at me and Drew and he's like, did you guys get the gas thing? I'm like, we didn't get gas. You did. So I got out and it was laying in the middle of the road. And he drove.

No, it was laying in the thing.

Then I pulled it out, took a picture of it.

Yeah. I thought. It's actually not. You're not the first person that. That I. I've known to do that. Thankfully, I haven't done it yet. I've. I've almost done it. Almost done.

We ain't speeding in that rv, that's for sure. No, that's the only way you can get AC is when you're doing 70.

Yeah. Yeah. Plus trips. Yeah, I mean, it was about. It's a 16 hour trip plus 16 hour drive, plus trip. I mean, stops. Yeah.

Well, you. You the nod. Father. I like that one. The Not. I know. I was gonna. I was thinking, which one. Do you remember Sean calling you Don the Dragon? Do you remember that nickname?

They used to call me Hoover the Mover. And the reason why. Because I'm very frumpy. And when I. When I work on my cardio, I can actually run a lot faster than people think. Yeah, man, you can really move like fruit for what we're looking at.

But somehow his OTOA Trump mine. I don't know how. No, I didn't. So. So I wasn't at otoa. I was helping out. The Sentinel foundation, raised money to save kids. It was for a good cause. There's only a. There's only a few events that I. I don't like to miss. Oteri is one of them. NTOA is another one. And SWAT Roundup is like those three. If I've missed any of those three, it hurts my heart. But the magnet. Talking about nicknames.

The one I used to hang out in Truck Club when I was 15.

Maybe my timing's off, but I told it enough. I told it enough times. I can shorten it down, Mike. You spent enough. You spent enough time around. Around funny men. Anyone give you a nickname?

I went to Fort Polk, Louisiana, as 11 Bravo. I was making about 700amonth with jump Pay. My nickname was Food Stamp because I. I couldn' Couldn't afford it. Other guys would go to the field, all their cool and stuff, and I had like. I had nothing.

[Tyler]

You got to get married, bro.

[Drew]

I couldn't.

[Brent]

I do remember going to basic and ait not spending any money, and then getting home to look at my bank account. Like, I should probably have Truck. Yeah, I should probably. Yeah, I got some money in this thing I haven't, you know, and going. That's all I got. I did not have a lot of money.

[Drew]

I made the mistake of coming out of basic and AIT and went to. Down to downtown for a week to the little plazas with the girls in the little doors and they were very friendly, but all they took was, all they took was my money. That's all that ended up there. What's that, what's that city called where Fort Benning is?

[Brent]

Oh, Columbus.

[Drew]

Columbus, Yeah. I went down to Columbus to the old exit.

[Tyler]

Five couches.

[Drew]

The couch is on the wall. And I lost all my money. So I had, I had a bit.

[Brent]

But Don, what was, what was jump pay when, when you first got in, do you remember?

[Tyler]

I don't think it's one up.

[Brent]

Speaking. Speaking of, speaking of the mic, I.

Want to say it was like 115, but I think it was less than that one.

[Brent]

Yeah, it has not risen with inflation. Like jump is I think not risen.

[Mike]

If it was 115 when I first joined it, it had just gone up from like.

I didn't go up much since I got there because I wasn't making five or so. Yeah, I was nine. No, 96. And it still was very low.

Do you remember what it was? 175.

[Drew]

I want to say 175.

I think it's. It's only, it's only. It's 150. When I thought it was 150.

[Mike]

Yeah, they're raising it.

We don't need you.

Ye. I don't know what jump pay is now, but they also, now they have this master pay for like if you're a jump master, they should. Stuff like that. I always, I don't remember the details on it.

[Brent]

I always hated that, that in the military you, you can go out and better yourself and get all these extra, you know, designator skills and you get no reward form, you know, per se. Like the military should pay you with every skill set and every. And the more.

[Mike]

And I don't know about everyone, but I, I agree with the jump master thing because I agree with the jump master thing because that's a huge responsibility.

[Brent]

Huge responsibility.

[Mike]

And you know, not that it's an incentive, but you ought to be somewhat rewarded for taking that on because, you know, I mean, it's cool. And you know, I, you know, once I, once I went to jump master school, I was like, why did I wait so long? You know, it wasn't intentionally, but it was, you know, the first time I did outside safety checks.

[Brent]

I definitely want to get into the riots and super chat some other things. But, but the, the jump master thing, surprisingly hard school. Yeah, it was a surprising hard school. Like it. And I had to get. I went to the 82nd from the Delta Force. I went to the 82nd job, get a Haircut school because it was the only one that fit in into my schedule. Yeah. And I had to go for. For promotions. And then I remember thinking like as. As you're getting checked or. Or as I'm checking people in the three man line going. If anybody ever jmpied me like this, I'd be like, you need to slow down chief and look at my equipment. Like it's, it's insane the way you know how fast you have to go through.

[Mike]

But the standards are high. But for a reason.

[Brent]

Standards are high. I was. You get. You get three chances to. Do you know what that's called? Like the jmpi. JMP get three. I failed one. I got an extra one because I, because I scored high on my, on my. So. So I got a pre test that if you, if you make it, you're good. But it's a pre test.

[Mike]

Yeah. Yeah.

[Brent]

I failed that. I failed the. I don't like you retasted like in an hour. I failed my first test and I'll. I think I finally got on my. But anyway, I was nervous. I was like there's no way I'm going back. Oh gosh. So much academics and saying that I failed jmpi. I was nervous. I was.

[Drew]

Did you guys go to aerosol school?

[Brent]

I didn't. I did not go to Error.

[Drew]

I went. And that is just as bad. That is sounds stupid dope on a rope, slide down a road, whatever. That's. Yeah, I went to both.

[Brent]

I did both. So.

[Drew]

And I was the only airborne guy in my class. So I got murdered. I went to Ford Drum. But there is the part of Air Assault nobody realizes is finding all the gigs on the Sling Lows. And I failed too. I failed the first one in the morning. I failed the second one three and you're done. So if I would have failed again, I was driving. I was going all the way back. So it was very, very stressful and it sounds stupid. Like is it.

[Brent]

Yeah.

[Mike]

Oh and it's a lot of work to. They would put. They would put 550 like to go home empty handed.

[Brent]

Oh for sure.

[Drew]

I can't imagine going home.

[Brent]

People, they do forget some of those schools. Pathfinder is another one like you. You basically go through Pathfinder and, and Robin Sage. But like the, the. The textbook portion of those schools are so much harder than what the school you think it is or the fun part of that school. The milk as military does.

[Drew]

I say aerosol. You're like oh, you slid down a rope. Big deal. No, there's a week of sling loads.

[Tyler]

What do you think? What do you. I don't say what do you think is harder? Because you can't answer that. What would you rather do, the hardest of the physical schools or the hardest of the academic schools?

[Brent]

Oh, that's a good question. I think I'd rather do the hardest of the physical schools.

[Mike]

It depends which one makes me go hungry because I've done all those. Yeah, I'm good at those. They're not fun. I check all those.

[Brent]

Go without food blocks. I mean, he'll say. And we talked about on the podcast, dive school was. Was one of the most physical schools ever went to. But the dive charts and the re dives and. And the. The academics of dive school was no joke. Bob Keller, who had no problem physically with dive school, I'm not sure he ever went to bed sore. I had. Like, he was my roommate. Like, I had to academically tutor him so he could graduate. Dive school, it was.

It was.

You go to dive soon.

Yeah, a dive soup was a lot easier. It was a dive.

Oh, was it? I thought it was academically way hard.

[Brent]

Yeah, it was. It was pretty much a gentleman's course. It had a couple hard things to it, but dive soup was a much better experience.

Not like jump master versus.

[Brent]

But I still would walk by the pool and dive soup, the same pool you go to dive school in, and just. And just look at that with hatred and disdain.

I've never hated an inanimate object so much in my life than the pool in Key West. Anyway, where are we at, Drew?

What a stupid thing to do. But those are things you do when. When you're drunk off your ass and you have to live with yourself and you have to live with that lie. Those. Those are things you do.

What's a Wagner dude in Syria?

Yeah, they're kind of like the Blackwater for. For Russia. That. That story's out there. It's in the open. I. I may know a thing or two about that, but it wasn't the Rangers that smoked all those dudes. There was. There was a. There's another unit there. That was it. They're in support of. Yeah, I've never heard anyone give. Give the rangers credit for smoking all those dudes. And not that they did nothing, but was it.

Was it a battle? Was a miscommunication.

It wasn't much of a battle.

Yeah, you know, I was. I finally got time to. To sit down a little bit and watch the Shawn Ryan episode. Shawn Ryan interviewed one of the Russians from. From the Wagner group. So I'm. It's really interesting to see someone from the other side, like, give their perspective about it. And when I talked, I didn't. I didn't talk. I didn't go see it till I talked to Sean about it. And Sean was like, oh, yeah. He was real honest about what happened and how. And how they got their asses kicked. I was like, I'm kind of surprised he was, to be honest with you. It's just not flattering to be like, yeah, we're the Wagner group. We're all former betsnaz guys. And, you know, we're kind of the best that. That Rush has to offer for hire and buried a lot of our friends. But, yeah, he was very open and honest about how. How ineffective their plan was.

Funny story about a rodeo. When I was a kid growing up, I was probably school. The newspaper was like the front page of the newspaper where I grew up was Islamic man purposely butchers the national anthem at rodeo, right? And it was this huge thing. I was like, oh, my God, was that. It was Borat in my hometown.

I remember that. Yeah, I remember. I remember. Gosh, that. That guy got away with so much for so long. It took took. He was. He was really good at costumes, you know, as well. Like, he. He became several different people.

You see the. The video of him pretending to be an Islamic guy and he goes like, Podunktown, usa, Basically telling them like, these are the. This is this. These are the different mosque plans we have for your city. It's going to be a beautiful mosque. It's the biggest mosque ever. And like, but you know, you know, we need, we need your buy in on this. And we want to know which mosque you want us to build. And they're like. And they're all since small town usa, like, we don't want any of your mosques here. And they were just blatantly kind of racist about it and not holding back. It was brilliant.

No one, no one, no one leaves the unit to go back. You know, just like, just like John McPhee. He didn't go back to be a Green Beret willingly. He was. He was fired.

My mom never killed me.

I gotta say. It's. It's. It's my dad. My mom and dad. My mom and dad did. When they sold their businesses and went to retire, they did two really cool things to me for me. One was right off this whole business, I had that C6 Corvette that I did. That Joe thing came back from deployment, and it was. It was like 2005. And I bought a 2005 black Corvette. Yeah, I remember that. I put. I put half down on that thing, and I think I had like 10 or 15 grand still left on it. And my mom and dad paid it off.

That was. That was really. That was really nice of them. I haven't forgotten that. And they gave. They gave me. I didn't ask for it. They gave me a down payment to help from my very first house.

And, yeah, I'd have to say my parents, too. Same thing. I had a truck. I was out of the army, which means I had no money. So I was like, oh, I want to go down to just liability insurance. And they're like, you owe, like, six grand on this thing, dude. You ain't going to liability. So my mom paid it off so I could just have liability.

I'm watching video clips of cops being pelted with rocks right in their face. They're being recovered by other cops. If you, if I were to show up to a call and you picked up a rock and went like this, I can shoot you all day long and no one will be.

So how about this? How about you control of your own state and your own city and the feds won't have to step in to protect the good people of California. I'm glad he did it. So I don't like talking a whole lot about what the unit's carrying now.

Now, under stress, what happens is cops don't train. None of them. They get this fancy gun, they go the range, they zero it, and then they don't pull out their holster and shoot it for months. Months, Months. Now they have a beaver tail and a safety to overcome under the most high stress, unpredictable situation they're ever going to encounter. The Glock, the Sig, the Smith and Wesson, all those guns are going to go bang every time. No problems.

How does, so how does it work for you guys? You guys get like a list of guns you can carry? Is it like, how does, how does that work?

It depends on the agency, I'd say because like I was so surprised that his had that ours does not allow patrol to carry anything else. Now they'll. They'll bring out five guns when the contract's up and they'll bring out a tne squad to come out to the range and vote on it. But at the end of the day, it's who, who knows admin who's getting a little piece of that, that, that pie.

But yeah, yeah, I think we've talked about on the show before. I feel like it's been a while. It. It surprised me. Like my cousin was worked for West Palm and he was a 90s cop when he started. I think he put in 30 years. Good for him. But he had to Buy his. He had to buy his first gun.

I've, I've always said this and this is generally true. I would go a little bit inside 10 but it, it depends on you and how much you train. But let's go five or maybe even three. 1. There's no need to get a dot on someone that close. Iron sights up close will always be quicker.

[Mike]

Well at those instances you don't need anything.

[Brent]

Three and five. You really don't point. You need to aim. It's gotten like a instinctive shooting. I will try to. I say I don't aim. I will get my front sights on. On. If we're talking about a people size target, the only thing I'll put up is is is my front sight and I'll put my front sight where and that you can, you can acquire like really, really quick. What, what distance is the optic become a game changer. 1525 for sure. But I will give you. It's not just a distance thing. It's. It's a, it's a lighting thing as well. So even if the street lights are on and even if you have the glow into the, the dark. Was it iridium or tritium? Gosh, iridium. The iridium cell phone, the tritium. They're not easy to pick up at night. So you're really not that useful at, at night without an optic.

What about a hostage shot?

[Brent]

Yeah, that's where you put the dot.

[Drew]

On and train it. And now you got to take I bet that 5 yard hostage shot with iron sight so is a little harder.

[Brent]

So that's where I would say I optic all the time. It's probably because you can still do the front sight drive or even use your optic to drive on a Close target.

I don't, for a hostage shot, I don't, I don't need it at 5 or 10. I mean I, I can, I can.

[Drew]

Yeah, yeah.

Comes in useful though, I think.

[Brent]

Yeah, I say that with. So I, I just, I just did a pistol class with some, I will call it like intermediate people. It doesn't matter if you have a red dot or a, or iron sights, the amount of people with bad trigger control or anticipating the round is it, it doesn't matter. It doesn't. So unless you're shooting and, and you, and you have trained to shoot to pull the trigger correctly slowly and then, and then slightly faster, it, it doesn't matter. All that at close range has more to do with trigger control than your sights.

[Drew]

100%. The only way my devil's advocate is obviously the dot is you're seeing everything. Whereas the iron sight, even on a hostage shot, you'll have to zoom in now you got movement, you got a hostage. So with that dot floating and you're looking at the whole picture through the dot, I think it makes that short shot a little easier.

[Brent]

But yeah.

[Mike]

Well, I mean.

[Brent]

What did you say? What's that? How many yards did you set your pistol at?

[Tyler]

That's a good question.

[Brent]

You know, you say that I don't even like set it at a particular yard. I mean the last time I went and just double checked my zero because it's, it's generally no make a, gotta make a short answer. 7, 10, 12. Like I just, I just generally go there, you know, get that, that unmarked distance. Like ah, this is about right. And I shoot. I don't. The pistol to me is not a, like a three round group. I was, I will shoot no less than 5, 6, 7 maybe like when I, when I know it's, it's around that 1 inch pace that I want it to be. I'll send, I'll send a lot of, of groupings of, of bullets to group that. That way at least five, if not seven or 10. And then you can really see if that whole grouping went a little right or a little high. It really, really takes that way. I only do that with the pistol, I don't do that with the rifle.

[Mike]

So, so I teach a lot of red dot pistol classes and straight up I believe that you can shoot just as fast with an optic as you can with irons, but more accurately. So that when you speed up you can shoot just as accurately but faster at all distances. I believe from even, even in the, the distance that you don't necessarily even need sights. When you drive the gun out, you'll see the dot and you will know that it's where it should be or good enough. And if you need to slow down and make that hostage type shot or that, that more refined, you know, shot, it's there for you all the way back to, you know, I mean, in my class, students shoot at 25. We don't really go much farther than that.

[Tyler]

Yeah.

[Mike]

But all that up close shooting and stuff like that, we do a lot of that stuff. And what I find is once guys start to get used to some of the stuff that I'm teaching them, they get faster and more accurate at the same time.

[Brent]

Yeah.

[Mike]

And you know, to me that's, that's the goal is to close that gap between the speed and accuracy. It just works. I mean it's 20, 25. We put on optics on our pistols now.

[Brent]

Yeah. And absolutely.

[Mike]

It's just, it's the way, it's the way the future, it's here to stay.

[Brent]

One of my pistols has a front sight on it. One doesn't. One is only reliant on, on the red dot. One has a front sight on it and no rear sights. I, it's, it's personal preference. I don't look at someone with, with iron sights and a, and a, and an optic and be like, oh, that's, that's stupid. But my personal preference is I don't like rear sights. I know people like. Well, it's a good backup site. I just, I, I don't worry, I don't worry about it. And I don't like anything muddying up what's in, inside, inside my, my window. So I don't want that rear sight in there. I don't want to fight with it. I just want a clear view. That's just, just a little, little tip.

[Drew]

In the law enforcement world. They made it. They have to. I mean that for you. Yeah, I get that too.

[Mike]

Yeah. Look at it. It's like, why not have the backups?

[Brent]

I just told you, if you're.

[Drew]

That'S the gospel.

Well, the other thing.

But the other thing is if you're threat focused, you don't have to worry. You won't even see those irons. They won't be in your way because you're not looking at them or for them, you know.

And my only thing with that would be if you're missing. We're shooting at paper. You're seeing your misses. If you're in a real gunfight and you're missing. With the optic, you can actually see where the optic is.

[Mike]

Exactly.

[Drew]

If you have to. If you're in a stressful situation, you have to slow down and make a important shot. You're not gonna be able to catch your front sight and get back. You're gonna see the optic going this way or this way. Go. I'm missing. Well, whatever you're doing.

But you're gonna know when you jerk the trigger.

[Drew]

On paper, we can see the misses. On a body or a real target, you're not going to be able to see the misses, but you can kind of see where your dot is going. Not that anybody's gonna be thinking about that anyway.

Nor should you be looking for holes in the.

So what he does was he uses the hollow sun optics where you can turn the dot off and use the circle eotech style reticle only. And he has a pretty good system to where it works and works quite fast.

I have one of those. But even that eotech style system and the circle with like the little crossing still has a dot in the middle of it.

Yeah. And yeah, Louis, that guy has a. He is that guy. But he's got a pretty good system for it. He's got some pretty good points about it, especially for defensive type use. At about 25 yards, that reticle is almost exactly the same size as the black portion of a B8 target. So it's really not as big as you think it is. And for center mass defensive shooting.

So like when someone's 25 yards away from me and they're coming and I'm like, wait a minute, hold on, I gotta get this. I gotta get this hollow sun setting on the. There, we got it.

You gotta have both. But you know if you don't have nods, you can't see in the dark without a flashlight.

All right, here, there, there's my what, what I wish would happen. There's reality. They should, they should absolutely have nods and they should, they should work under nods. That's what they should do. And they all, they all fight for nods and they all spent our tax money on, on really nice nods and at pails to go with them. And then they don't train to do it. So that sounds like a hit on them. But when you work with them enough, you also start realizing most SWAT teams are not full time SWAT teams. Even the full time SWAT teams, Miami Dade srt, those guys are so operational when you know they, their time isn't protected for training. So they're so operational. When are they going to get the time to use the nods? So the reality is they should use nods. But if they don't have time to train under nods, then you, then you can't use knots. You have to fight for that training or, or get that training set aside for you somehow, some way.

It's not a magic pill.

And, and this is one of the things that, you know, sometimes I gotta step back from, you know, from my, my high horse, if you will. You forget, in the military, I spent so much time under NODS at Big. At first I was like, oh, it's easy. Just put on these nods, let's go to work. It's just like, you know, it's just like not having nods. It's just, it's just green now. But the reality is it's not, it is not the same. If you don't work with NODS a lot, it's super uncomfortable. You run into your teammates, you run into walls. The spatial awareness isn't there. It takes time.

You know what's cool though is that it's dark half the day. So you can.

That's what I was thinking while you're saying that is, I mean, you don't.

Have to train a nice and out.

But the easy button is learn from somebody who can give you that head start and then incorporate them into your ops as you can and incorporate them into your training as much as possible or else it's just wasted taxpayer money.

I will say this looks cool with that as well. Is even though they all have them. Them. And I, I believe you know what you guys are saying is then if, if you want to train on them, you'll find time to train them. And I, and I, I kind of do agree with that. The problem is. And I run, I run this team from, from SWAT team to SWAT team. Not all guys on the SWAT team are bought in on nods. And so when, when half of the old timers aren't really bought in, then it's. It's really not going to happen until, until some of those guys that aren't completely.

Because what happens is you guys are absolutely right. You go put on knots for your first run. You're moving at like a snail's pace and you feel super slow, but you have to train slow.
