The Athletic FC welcome to the preview from the Athletic fc. It's the show where we get you set for the weekend's Premier League action. This week we're looking ahead to a potentially pivotal capital collision between Arsenal and Chelsea. With me for this one, we've got Kerry Jones back with us. How you doing, Carys?
Advertiser
I'm good, thank you.
Sean Linda
It's nice to be back.
Matt Davis Adams
And it's back to back preview caps for Art De Rocher. How you doing, Art?
Art De Rocher
I'm all good. Better than last week, hopefully. That's a theme that continues throughout the spring.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, we shall see. Later, we're going to get into some of the other big matchups of Matchweek 28, but first let's get to our feature presentation. And after successive draws in the League, Arsenal got back to winning ways in thoroughly satisfactory fashion against their biggest rivals, Tottenham and Eberici Ezza once again taunting the side he almost joined last summer. As we've alluded to, Art, you were edgier than a U2 guitarist before last week's show. And after that, Wolves Debacle So just how important was that result for Arsenal's title hopes and also for your own peace of mind?
Art De Rocher
It was massive. I think if they hadn't of won that game, then this game against Chelsea would have been even more tense than it could have been. And to kind of settle the nerves, I guess, and feel good about themselves was a major point. Because it's not just the result, but the performance, especially in the second half, I think would have really encouraged Mikel Arteta to really feel like his players, feel like themselves again. And hopefully for them, they'll be able to kind of take that into Chelsea. And obviously they play Brighton in midweek as well, so it's a big kind of block of games coming up now and they needed that result and performance away at Spurs.
Matt Davis Adams
So when they lost against Man United at the Emirates in January, Mikel Arteta asked for fans to jump on the fun boat, which is a phrase that Kerris didn't particularly care for. Do Arsenal fans and players alike need to try and enjoy these final few months? I mean, is that even possible?
Art De Rocher
Yeah. I mean, to be fair, at the time, he said everyone associated with Arsenal, so he was including the players within that. I think it's one where obviously you'd want to say yes, but at the end of the day, it just depends on what's happening on the football pitch. And what was happening at Tottenham was fun to watch, so it was easier for people to, I guess, hop on board. And that's, I guess, the way that they'll have to approach these next 10 league games is looking at how they can have fun on the pitch and then transmit that energy to those in the stands and then it all feeds off each other. I think when there's tension in the stands, there's tension on the pitch. When there's tension on the pitch, there's tension in the stands. So I think it all kind of works as one together.
Matt Davis Adams
Charis Pep Guardiola's unlikely pal Neil Warnock once said, by all means, enjoy it, but. But enjoy it by being disciplined. Four mistakes leading to goals already for Arsenal. Got to cut that out, obviously. I mean, it's such a contrast, isn't it, to the start of the campaign where they didn't even allow a shot on their goal.
Sean Linda
Yeah, I mean, I think that the error last weekend obviously ended up not counting for too much. You know, the way it's been clipped up with Declan Rice kind of telling everyone to focus and huddling everyone and pulling everyone together and then making an error at the Back just unfortunately fit quite well with the whole bottling narrative. Unfortunately for him, it was very clippable and tweetable. It's important, but I think what's a bit more important is that they don't let that get to them. I would imagine that what's more important to them is that they don't let that narrative kind of get to them and that they do just stay focused. They're very good at that. We know that they can be a very defensively disciplined team and that they usually are. And these sort of individual errors can be costly, but so far they haven't been too costly. They weren't last weekend. It's just if as they come into the run in, that pressure kind of ramps up and individual mistakes start to feel more significant than they need to be.
Matt Davis Adams
Chelsea wise, then that's your specialist subject at the moment. Back to back draws at home against Leeds and Burnley after a really strong start from Liam Rossini. What's gone wrong over. Over these last two games, they've used two matches to set fire to four points.
Sean Linda
Yeah, that was how he very eloquently put it. I wrote a piece a while ago, I think it was when they played Aston Villa at the end of December where the headline was something about, like, good teams win even when they play badly. Chelsea don't win even when they play well. And I've been thinking about it again over the last two games. I think the sort of simple reality is they failed to capitalise when they're on top and then they have a really silly moment and that has led to, you know, against leeds, they were 2 nil up, gave away a penalty. The penalty is one of those that unfortunately happens when you have a player like Caicedo who will stretch for tackles. There was absolutely no need to panic in the way that they did to then concede an equaliser. Burnley, similarly, again, you should have built on the early goal, put the game to bed. Instead, they've left themselves vulnerable and then there's a mistake in the red card and you could see again, I think it was a sense of panic. Whereas if you look at something like, for instance, Wolves Away was a good example of what it should look a bit more like. They made a silly error and conceded a silly goal from a set piece, but they were comfortably ahead and it didn't matter and they were able to be annoyed at the error without it causing this domino effect and chaos and panic. Liam Rosinha said that, you know, he wants his team to have a perfect 90 minutes and obviously that's fair enough. But I think more importantly at the moment is you should be able to have a good 70 minutes and that be good enough and the remaining kind of 20 not cause a complete head loss if something goes wrong. They are victim of their own panicking in moments. At the moment they're playing pretty well, but they're not making it count in the last couple of games.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, and as Keris alludes to, there are. These red cards are certainly not helping their cause. Fofana, the latest culprit. Sixth in the Premier League alone for Chelsea this season. Is this giving you echoes of early Arsenal under Arteta days? Because they had a discipline problem back then, didn't they? And how costly do you think it's been for Chelsea?
Art De Rocher
Yeah, I think the main thing is when I look back to that time, let's say about halfway through arteta's time. Charge. So 2021, 2022. There are a few red cards in that season where it was almost like Arsenal had done the hard work, as Kerris was saying, and then they just undermine all of that by making this silly decision on the pitch. So it's part of what holds teams back from especially those Champions League spots. Because at that time, I think in that season Arsenal finished fifth, so they dropped the Europa League despite looking quite good in the spring. So when you're looking at this Chelsea side, who are fifth currently, but obviously in and around Manchester United and Aston Villa, they could really be at least fourth, I'd say, if they cut out those mistakes. And when you're actually playing well and you don't need to kind of put yourself in those risky situations, it makes it all the more frustrating, I think, especially for the managers.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, it's what, 19 points dropped from winning positions this season, 17 of them have come at Stamford Bridge and they haven't got a good recent record against Arsenal. Haven't beaten the Gunners since August 2021. Lost seven, drawn three since then. According to Opta, they've got the hardest running of any team in the Premier League. They could drop out of the top five if they fail to win on Sunday. Is Resinha under a lot of pressure to qualify for next season's Champions League? Kerrys.
Sean Linda
I wouldn't necessarily frame it as pressure on Rocinha, weirdly, considering that fans did not seem very convinced by him when he came in. I don't think that in recent weeks, those results, I don't think he has really taken too much of the flak for them. I think fans have kind of recognised it as mistakes from players rather than from the manager. The only game where I've seen kind of real debate over Rossinha and the decisions he made was Arsenal in the cup. Reset up very defensively, I think that was a bit different. So I wouldn't frame it as pressure on him. But Chelsea are definitely under pressure. You know, they had a team that managed to qualify for the Champions League last season. They've had no major departures. They've added to the squad. Obviously the injuries to Colwill and also for a big chunk of the season to Palmer will be factors that fans will bring up, but they should have enough depth for those to not make a big enough difference to be Champions League versus not. So when Rocinha came in they were fifth on goal difference but you know, down to 11th was still within three points of them. Whereas now it is starting to stretch out a bit more like we have that sort of European chasing pack established now. The question is kind of I think where they finish in that, barring a complete disaster. But if that was to end up being outside of the Champions League places, I think questions have to be asked of not necessarily of Rocinha, but I think of the squad and how they've managed that because they do have the quality to be finishing in that top four. Top five.
Matt Davis Adams
They do on paper. Yeah. Okay, next we will talk more specifically,

about where each team's going to look to hurt each other
Sean Linda
Foreign.
Matt Davis Adams
Now then, Eberichi Eza and Victor Yokerez lit up last Sunday's North London derby. I think we can be fairly certain that Yokerez is going to start off the back of that. What about Ezzer? Because none of us predicted that he'd be in the lineup I don't think last week for the spurs game and surely he's undroppable after that performance.
Art De Rocher
You'd assume so, but it's never that simple with Mikel Arter tight, say. Actually this season he's only named an unchanged lineup three times. I'm not sure where that ranks across like other clubs in the Premier League, but it feels particularly low for an Arsenal side who had settled 11s in previous seasons. But with Ezer in particular, I thought it was quite interesting after the spurs game that Arteta said he's understanding how to get the best of him a bit better now. Eze and Yokerez, both of them really grew into the game, so I thought Yokerez in the second half really combined with Eze and Saka nicely allowed them to kind of run in behind and actually be a platform for them. The big hope in, I guess anyone who supports Arsenal in their mind is that it wasn't just because it was Tottenham and how bad Tottenham are this season. I think this game against Chelsea, even though Fofana is suspended, I think will be a bit more of a real test for them. But that being said, when you look at how they were playing and how confident they became during that second half, I mean Eze with that little nutmeg and the feints and stuff, we haven't seen that for a few months. Really. I think those two would be in good spirits to go from the start again.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, and maybe not spurs level defence, Karis, but it'll be makeshift for Chelsea. Not just Fofana who's suspended, but Cucurea injured as well. Going to be interesting to see who plays in both those positions. Right, because Gusto started at Left back against Burnley didn't particularly impress. And then to try and preserve the win, Rocinha threw on toast in Anna Champong and that didn't work either. So who do you think is going to partner Trevor Chalaba on Sunday?
Sean Linda
Yeah, in terms of that right center back spot, I think Chelsea fans love Josh Achinpong. Everyone loves him. He is still a kid and he is not perfect. I think he's a really high quality defender but there are times when sort of like you can tell he's a little bit maybe indecisive at the back. I think we saw that with Leeds Equalizer the other week definitely. So he'd probably be a lot of people's first choice. I wonder if given Arsenal's physicality, Rocinha might choose Tosin to partner Chalibur instead. But then again, you know Tosin is not immune to errors as we saw in the other fixture at Leeds. I think a few of Chelsea's centre backs have struggled for consistency this season, so it's a shame for Fofana to miss this one. In terms of the left spot, I would imagine that Gusto will probably still stay in there. The alternative really would be Jord Hato, who again is a player that Liam Rosenhe seems to really like and seems to rate pretty highly. He's appeared sort of as a left back and as a left centre back I actually think he's looked slightly more comfortable when he's been more central. So perhaps there's a world in which he plays on the left and Chalobah goes on the right of the centre back pairing. I'm not sure they're blessed with a lot of options, but none of them are perfect, which is unfortunate at a time that they'd finally been finding that consistency. I wouldn't be surprised to see Joel Hatto certainly get on whether he's trusted with a starting spot. I think up against some of Arsenal's wide players particularly would be a bit of a risk. He's still getting used to his role in that team and he's still working on his decision making. Again a young player. So Tosin's experience would come in from that point of view, as you can tell from me, sort of going back and forth. It's not a straightforward answer and a lot of these players have different strengths and different shortcomings. It depends quite a lot, I think, on how much Rocinha wants to attack the game.
Matt Davis Adams
Mamadou Sarabi, another option at centre back as well, but that's a a big thing to Put on him for what would be his first Premier League start. At the top end, though, Caris, it's all looking a bit healthy as well. Pedro in particular, he's one of the Premier League's form players at the moment. How impressed have you been with him? He's going to be key, isn't he? If Chelsea are going to get Champions League football again.
Sean Linda
This feels like the first time this season that Chelsea have really had an informed striker and that kind of like focal point up top. I think early in the season when Joao Pedro was stepping in, in Liam Delap's absence in the number nine, he looked sometimes a little bit like he was wanting to drop deep. He was wanting to try and progress play. He didn't necessarily think that others around him were doing it and he wanted to try and do it himself, was the impression that I got. In that sense, I think he's really benefited from having Cole Palmer back. The two sort of struck up a bit of a partnership at the World cup, and even though I don't think Palmer is at near his best, still, I think maybe having a bit of that existing relationship and Joao Pedro trusting Palmer with the creative side has just freed him up to get in those poaching positions, which is a really, really good thing for the team. Enzo Maresca always used to speak about wanting to spread goals around the team. That's fine and it's good, but having an inform striker who can build up ahead of steam during a run in is a really important thing for their momentum.
Matt Davis Adams
So they meet again at the Emirates, what, a little less than a month after that League cup semi final, second leg. I'm guessing Mikel Arteta is not going to expect Chelsea to approach the game in, in quite the same way. It was really defensive, wasn't it, to start with? I mean, I'd be very surprised if we see Liam Delap as a right winger, for example.
Art De Rocher
Yeah, yeah, I think it'll be completely different. And one thing that really stands out, especially when you look at the Arsenal home games against Chelsea in recent years, is Cole Palmer's not been available for the last two in the league. So five nil in 23, 24 and one nil last season. Palmer wasn't available for either one. So he should be able to start this weekend. It'll be the first time he's actually played at the Emirates for Manchester, for Chelsea. Sorry, sorry, my bad. I had the. I have a memory of him playing for Manchester City against Arsenal in the Community Shield. But yeah, I think that's going to add a very different dynamic to, I guess, Arsenal, Chelsea at the Emirates, because they haven't had to play him there. And also, I guess part of the debate for Rosenheim will be whether he's brave with the team off the ball or not. We've seen not just with spurs, but Wigan too, in recent weeks, what happens when teams actually try and play a game of football. With Arsenal, I think it's quite easy for Arsenal to really kind of take advantage of the spaces that open up when teams are brave. And actually, even in the League cup game, he was very insistent on Chelsea, like, staying high in their kind of defensive line. I can remember him almost every two minutes telling them to stay on the halfway line, even though the perception was they were kind of too defensive. So I wonder how that dynamic will go as well, because if they do stay high again, Arsenal that night didn't really take advantage of it. And I feel like if they approach that side of the game in a similar way, there should be space for them to attack.
Matt Davis Adams
Are you thinking defensive again, carries from a Chelsea perspective or a little more open?
Sean Linda
Definitely not as defensive as we saw in that cup game. I don't think from all the football I've watched Chelsea play under Liam Rossigna that he will have enjoyed setting the team up that way. I think he felt that the worst thing to do would be concede an early goal. That could completely kill the tie. That's fair. Maybe he could have kind of taken the handbrake off a little bit earlier. And I think he will have also learned that fans didn't like seeing Chelsea approach a game with Arsenal in that way. But I would imagine that it will try and strike a balance. Right. As Art just pointed out, trying to come out and play against Arsenal and leaving spaces for them is very dangerous. But also in the cup game, I would argue that there was very little space opening up for Chelsea, on the other hand, because Arsenal had no pressure to come out right, they were sitting on a lead. They had very little to gain by taking risks in that game. Whereas this week and now, looking at the state of the title race, they have a lot to gain and a lot to lose. Both teams do. And for that reason, I think it will be a significantly more entertaining game than the one we were trying to think of things to write about at the start of the month. So I think it should be a more entertaining game. Just because both teams have to take risks, they cannot afford to sit back and see what happens. They are both in really difficult kind of Tight spots at the moment.
Matt Davis Adams
All right, well, that leads us nicely on to prediction. So you're saying a 4 all draw then, Keris, are you?
Sean Linda
Yeah, no, I think Arsenal will go ahead. Joao Pedro will equalise, but it will not quite be enough. And Arsenal will take all three points late on probably around, I don't know, 75 minutes. Maybe Chelsea will miss a massive chance in like the 89th minute. I reckon those are my uber specific predictions.
Matt Davis Adams
Ah, that's the gauntlet laid down to you there to try and beat Karis for specificity.
Art De Rocher
Oh wow, that's a big ask. I'm gonna go with the score prediction first. I'll go three one Arsenal. I don't think unfortunately that they'll keep a clean sheet. As you guys were talking about earlier, it's been a while since their defense has been kind of locked up. I mean it feels like years ago that they kept eight clean sheets in a row, but I do feel like they should have enough to get by. Who's gonna score first? I think Arsenal will score first, go 2 nil up with a set piece goal. They haven't scored one for a while, so maybe they're due on then. Yeah. Palmer will assist Pedro to make it 2:1 and then maybe Victor Yokoro as will score the third when the game's stretched.
Matt Davis Adams
Nice. I can't compete with these two for quite how specific they've been, so I'm just going to say it'll be a two all draw. 4:30 Sunday for that one at the Emirates Stadium.
Art De Rocher
This is the Athletic FC podcast, proudly sponsored by Betfair.
Matt Davis Adams
So this is the part of the show where with the help of our partners Betfair, we show you how you can play in a different league this season. We got James Mackie back with us and no surprise, James, that we are talking Arsenal against Chelsea. Interested first of all in the match markets for this please.
James Mackie
Yeah. The Betfair Sportsman as the home side, Arsenal as the 8 to 15 odds on favourites to take a valuable three points against their London rivals. And you can see why as they have a really decent recent record against the Blues in their last three home league games against Chelsea. Liam Racing Chelsea are as big as four to one actually in the Matros 90 market at the Emirates on Sunday's take all three points and keep up that hump for those valuable Champions League spots. But they are winless in their last eight Premier League games against Arsenal. It's their longest since a run of 19 between 1995 and 2005 actually. So they Want to snap that the draw is priced at 5 to 2 and these two have previews actually when it comes to sharing the points, drawing two of the last five games against each other and last sharing the points the last time they met in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge. So I actually think anything could happen in this game, Matt, really. But Arsenal, they're a short price on the sportsbook at 8 to 15.
Matt Davis Adams
Anything could happen. I agree with you. Something that is very likely to happen is that there'll be a fair few cards yellow, maybe some reds given it's Chelsea as well. Always a spicy fixture this one. And that has influenced your bet builder.
James Mackie
Oh, it definitely, definitely has. And look, fingers crossed for yellow cards at the weekend for the bet builder as I'm going a bit of a different tack, different approach. I'm playing on what will hopefully be like a furious and frantic game between London rivals with eight yellow cards between them. Last time they met in the league at Stamford Bridge. So I'm going for a carded double starting with the home side. And you're in timber to be carded. He picked up a yellow in his last game against spurs in the north. London Derby has also been carded against Chelsea this season already in the first leg of the Carabao cup game. So he starts us off at seven to two. And for Chelsea, well, this man needs no introduction when it comes to getting a card. Moises Caicedo to be carded at nine to five. He's picked up three cars his last eight games. Last being card against Leeds three games ago. There's only two in the league. And he's always the type of player that just loves to get involved in the thick of it, doesn't he? So at around for those two selections comes together for an 11 to 1 BET builder. And the beauty of it to be carded, Mark it mentioned is that safe sub to Tatrick, meaning that if the leg hasn't won and the player comes off, the player that replace them will carry on that leg of the bet. So fingers crossed, Matt. Nice 11. One carded double can land on Sunday.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, I like it, James. Moises Caicedo, like you on Valentine's Day, simply dripping in cards. Appreciate your time today and we'll catch up with you again soon.
James Mackie
Thanks, Matt. This is the Athletic FC podcast proudly sponsored by Betfair.
Matt Davis Adams
And now then, Manchester City have a trip to Elham Road on Saturday night. They'll be looking to close the gap at the top to two points before Arsenal play on Sunday. What about Leeds though? Carry. It's just two defeats in their last 14, but also two wins in the last 10 in the league. Under the lights on a Saturday night. How tough of a test is this going to be for Pep's peeps? It wasn't much of a tough test for Arsenal the other week, but, you
Sean Linda
know, under the lights, the stat about Leeds under the lights at Elland Road is pretty crazy. They're unbeaten in their last. I think it's 25 league or playoff match that kicked off after five at Elland Road. That's like mad. It's a fun one for sociologists and people who like to study the atmosphere and whatever. With all that said, I don't think it's going to make that much difference. City really kind of have the bit between their teeth now and Leeds haven't necessarily. We saw last time they played Arsenal. I think with teams who are of that quality, they are still struggling. I think that they might present a tough test for a while, but I struggle to see them being able to break down City and. Except maybe through a set piece and I just think City will kind of overpower them through pure firepower. I just think they have too much quality for them.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, City maybe not quite at their electric best of recent years, but racking up the wins are. And somebody who's helped them to that end is Nico O'Reilly. How impressed have you been with him? He's a. He's a fullback, he's a midfielder. I mean, he's nailed on for the England squad, isn't he, for the World cup, given his versatility.
Art De Rocher
Yeah, I think when you look at how he's developed, I mean, he was a midfielder in the academy at Manchester City, so this part of his career was always going to happen at some point, I guess. And to see, I guess the goal threat that he's been able to have with that has been, I guess, an added bonus for Pep and Thomas Tuchel going into the World Cup. Having someone who's able to play both positions and be a threat in different ways is extremely important, especially when you look at how that tournament can kind of be very different to previous World Cups. In terms of the last few weeks, it's been a bit annoying to watch from an Arsenal perspective because it's almost getting to a point where he feels like inevitable. So when I think it was his first goal against Newcastle where the ball covers him, it's like you just knew what was going to happen. So. Yeah, but I think for a young guy playing on confidence, that's what anyone would want to see, really, even if you are a title rival. And for him to be keeping Reinders out of the side as well, who I don't think we should forget was a really major signing for Manchester City in the summer from AC Milan. It just shows how important academy players can be for these clubs as well, because even though they may come in and play a different position for maybe the first year to 18 months that they're in the first team, there's always going to be a chance that they can kind of return to their natural positions and have a real part to play, because that's where they're most comfortable and that's where their kind of footballing education has come through. So it's good to see that from that perspective as well, because, yeah, I reckon he's probably wanted to play in midfield for a while too. So annoying. But it's good to see.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, that's a good point as well. You know, you look at the top teams in the Premier League, they've all got an academy player central, haven't they? Sakura O'Reilly, Kobbie Mainoo. Now again for Man United. And take your pick from Chelsea, including the captain Rhys James. And we're going to segue Kerris into talk of relegation. Gulped this Forest fan. Leeds currently six points from the drop zone. Are you counting them out of the fight to stay up? Have they already done it? I mean, two of their last three are against spurs and West Ham.
Sean Linda
I'd be very surprised if they went down now since they've found this formation that works for them, that seems to have really turned things around for them. And at this point, realistically, I feel like we're looking at who joins Burnley and Wolves in going down to the championship. And given kind of Wolves have this inverted commas like easy Fixture run to manage to throw away the gap that they've managed to build. I would be very surprised. They've kind of removed themselves from the conversation to an extent and I think the lack of noise for now around it should just help them get their heads down and work on grinding towards the end of the season. And I think from there they've. They're at a place that they can build on. Now that they have found a shape that works. They don't look like they're trying to force football that doesn't suit their squad. They've probably turned it around enough at this point. Sorry, Matt.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, hurtful, but I'm with you. So behind Leeds and fighting for survival are Spurs, Forest and West Ham, they're all away this weekend. We'll start with spurs, the only team still waiting to win a Premier league game in 2026. A short trip for them on Sunday as they head to Fulham. Last week, Caris widely viewed as a free hit as the Tudor period began. Another defeat this weekend, though, and there can be no doubt that they'll be banging trouble.
Sean Linda
Yeah, absolutely. It feels like we have a conversation a lot about, like, is this like Tottenham are going into crisis? It's like they're in crisis. Like, I don't know what this is, if it's not. If it's not crisis. I guess the silver lining for them this weekend is that they're not playing at home. But, yeah, I mean, this game is a chance to try and get a little bit of a fresh start on the Igor Tudor reign. As you said, I think last weekend was a bit of a free hit. I think the proper capital letters, like panic stations is if they lose to Forest in a few weeks, that will then not start the conversation, because we've obviously started it. But it's at that point that I think it becomes a very serious, like, they are in trouble. In terms of the relegation fight, that's the one that I would be keeping an eye on. But this weekend is mostly a chance to try and. And start a little bit of momentum.
Matt Davis Adams
Potentially tough game for West Ham. Meanwhile, go to Anfield on Saturday. I mean, I say tough game. Liverpool have failed to beat Forest, Burnley and Leeds at home this season. Do you think West Ham can add their name to that list? Or is this a chance maybe for spurs to end up putting a bit of breathing space between they and the Hammers?
Art De Rocher
If I was West Ham, I'd go there and be brave. When you look at Liverpool last week against Forest, they weren't great. I know it's different playing at Anfield to playing away, but yeah, if I was West Ham, I'd just go for it. Especially when you consider the position they put themselves in against Manchester United when they were leading until very late in that game, you never know what's going to happen. And if you're in that position anyway, I think just go for it. That's what I would do. Especially when you look at how inconsistent Liverpool have been throughout the season. And yeah, I think when you look at West Ham's kind of recent form, there's two wins in there and I think there's going to be some confidence in that squad. So I wouldn't look at it as a free hit, as maybe Tottenham Might have done with the Arsenal game last week.
Matt Davis Adams
Forest meanwhile, at Brighton on Sunday after that 97th minute hammer blow at the hands of Liverpool and like Liverpool did art, Brighton are going to have a free midweek to build up to this game. Forest meanwhile, almost made a mess of their Europa League playoff against Fenerbahce. Had to bring on the big guns to get through it. Do you think this European campaign might end up hurting their bid for survival?
Art De Rocher
It could. When you get to April, looked at the squad from Thursday and there was like a bit of rotation in there. So Morgan, Gibbs, White didn't start, Sangari didn't start. So I think a few of the your main guys should be well rested. So yeah, I think at this moment in time it's probably good for them to be both because especially with a new manager, it allows him to kind of get more used to the team and see what combinations might work. So yeah, for now I wouldn't view it as a major issue. I know we mentioned last week that Brighton aren't the Brighton of previous seasons and then they won. So yeah, I'm not sure if we jinxed it there, but for now I think with Forest, if we want to use the arteterism, try and enjoy the European tour and then allow that to kind of build into the Premier League games. Not this week obviously because of the loss, but once it gets to crunch time, I think the momentum that can bring can actually be quite helpful.
Matt Davis Adams
Yeah, interesting. On Thursday night, Vitor Pereira started with a back three, which is his preferred formation and he had to ditch it and make four subs at halftime. So I'm not sure we'll be seeing that again. Producer Jay says. How has Vitor Pereira been received amongst the fan base and how confident am I feeling about staying up? Well, I think a weary indifference for generic Portuguese manager number 73. 3. Yeah, there'll be another one along shortly. His football is better, but I'm just kind of numb to the pain of managerial change, to be totally honest. Speaking of which, let's go to Burnley. They've stuck with their manager Kerris, despite some supporters wishing that they hadn't. Spirited performances against palace and Chelsea. Bit of an uptick for them. Eight points adrift of safety though. So it's time for my weekly is this a must win for Burnley Question. That ship has surely sailed, hasn't it? Again, ahead of their game against Brentford on Saturday.
Sean Linda
Yeah, I feel like I always end up getting asked about Burnley when I do these and I just. Unfortunately the problem with their season is that my answer hasn't really changed at all. It's now too late really for a managerial change to try and salvage something. I think that the upheaval that any of that would cause would be just as detrimental as any potential kind of new manager bounce could be beneficial. It's a must win for them, obviously. I think if we get to kind of mid March, end of March, and they're still kind of ticking along with the same sort of gap to safety, then that's when it probably becomes a bit of a foregone conclusion. But I just don't think that they have quite the quality in the squad when I watch them like they have moments from for instance, you know, we saw the set pieces against Chelsea, but in terms of open play, I just don't think they have what it takes to break teams down and they are not stubborn enough in their block when they try to sit in. They don't have the quality to be impenetrable and sturdy and tough to break down themselves. So sorry to any Burnley fans because it's not a particularly cheery answer, but I just don't see where either the cutting edge is coming from at the front or where the steel is coming from at the back to salvage something for them.

This is the Athletic FC Podcast, proudly sponsored by Betfair Right, let's go rapid fire through the rest of the weekend's games. The action kicks off on Friday night. Wolves against Aston Villa Unai Emery's men have won just one of their last four in the Premier League. They've only scored five goals in their last six. Who's going to pull them out of this funk then? Art? Is it going to be Morgan Rogers? Only one goal for him in the league this?
Art De Rocher
Yeah, I think he'd be the obvious answer. But part of what I feel is important to mention as well with this kind of recent run of form is it's happened when obviously they've lost Boubacar Kamara to injury and then also Yuri Tielemans. So I guess part of it will be Morgan Rodgers and maybe Tammy Abraham. But another massive part is figuring out what midfield works for them because I know there's been games where Douglas Luiz has started, where Amadou Onana has started, where Bogard has started other games, and I think maybe Emery. It's about figuring out which partnership really works and gives him something similar to what Tielemans and Kamara were giving him throughout the early or first half of the season. So I'd say Rodgers but also the midfielders that are behind him as well.
Matt Davis Adams
Bournemouth are unbeaten in seven league games. They host to Sunderland side that have lost four of their last five. Just a 12 hour round trip for the traveling Mackam. So obviously, obviously this one is the early kickoff. Cerys Bournemouth in with a shout of a Conference League place if they win this. They start the weekend two points behind seventh Brentford.
Sean Linda
They certainly feel like of the teams that are still tussling with Brentford for that place, they feel like probably the ones with the most momentum. I don't think any of the rest of the chasing pack, you know, palace are too messy. Sunderland, I think the pressure is completely off them. Whereas Bournemouth, it's felt like they have been pushing for that sort of result and to get into Europe, they've shown that promise for a little while now. So I guess there is maybe not pressure, not expectation, but a little bit of kind of hope that they would make that step. Whereas, you know, for a lot of the other teams, if we look at Palace, Sunderland, Brighton, I think their fans have largely sort of not really got that hope at this point. I think that, like I say, palace is too messy. Sunderland, there's just not the expectation there. They should already be delighted with how the season's gone. But, yeah, I think the question then becomes, you know, there's another interesting battle there, right between the two, if they can narrow the gap to Brentford a bit. Brentford, kind of. They haven't played always the most imaginative football, but they've been impressive in their sort of solidity a lot of the time in the games where they've played well and, you know, with a bit of pressure on them from behind, does that then start to crack in the run in. That could make the last kind of weeks of the campaign a lot more interesting.
Matt Davis Adams
Sunderland will be glad they got all those points in the bag early on. Right, Art? Because, I mean, three, four might be a bit strong, but they've lost four of their last five in the league. Including the last three.
Art De Rocher
Yeah. With that, I would say they're still only two points off Bournemouth. So again, I know I said it with West Ham, but they shouldn't treat this as a free hit. They can go there and hurt Bournemouth. And I think what's really impressed me, or one player who's really impressed me is Brian Brobbie. Throughout the season, when watching him live in person, seeing the strength against Gabriel Saliba, it's very rare that you see a striker just hold them off with ease. It was quite something to witness. But I also think that he was just not someone that was really on my radar because of Isidor and how well he started the season. So it was quite nice to see him kind of chip in with some really important goals. And I think when you're looking at the way Sunderland have approached this season as a whole, I know I'm not a Sunderland fan, but I wouldn't have it any other way because I feel like they've brought a really refreshing energy to the league and I really hope that their fans, I know they won't be too judgmental about the last five games, but I hope they're not too kind of upset with how recent weeks have gone and that the team are able to kind of turn things around. Because they have been, I guess, one of the best teams this season even though they're 12th. I think they've just brought something completely different to the league.
Matt Davis Adams
The Premier Leagues of the Northeast concern are Newcastle United. They host Everton on Saturday. The Magpies flying in Europe but just one win in their last seven Premier League games. And that comes with the caveat that lads, it was Tottenham. Meanwhile, Everton won just three of their last 12 carries. Who's had the most disappointing Premier League campaign out of these two teams?
Sean Linda
I think Newcastle. I think I was surprised early in the season by how long people seem to give them grace for, you know, a turbulent summer and how long people seem to view that not necessarily in their fan base but in I guess kind of football media more generally. How long people seem to keep viewing that as an acceptable reason for the drop off in performance and results that they had. I think you can't attribute, obviously it's now the end of February. You cannot attribute their fall off this season to just some key departures. They made a good signing in Nick Voltimada to play up front. They have some really high quality players. They just haven't been able to execute what they've been doing. Whether that's the burden of kind of Europe alongside the Premier League, I'm not quite sure. But I think they will be really disappointed with how this has gone. If you look at the pull that they would now have in trying to recruit. I'm not sure how many players would be looking at what they've achieved this season and the way this season has gone and thinking that that's a club that feels like it's on the up as it has been the last few years. It feels like their momentum, any momentum that they gained last season from the Carabao cup win and how great that was for them, it feels to me like that's really stalled. Everton will obviously be disappointed too, but I would argue that the expectations were not as high.
Matt Davis Adams
Let's finish with Manchester United against Crystal Palace. It's the league's most informed team in United. What would it take at this point, Caris, for Michael Carrick not to get the job on a full time basis?
Sean Linda
I don't even think it's necessarily results based at this point. I think the higher ups at the club have to weigh up sentiment and also they have to weigh up who is available.
James Mackie
Right.
Sean Linda
I think it would be a very different conversation about Carrick's future if, say, Thomas Tuchel hadn't just signed a New England contract, Oliver Glasner hadn't suddenly gone a bit kamikaze at his own board. Those are things that really kind of lower the rating of what would have probably been two of the contenders for the job that United fans might have considered and that the board might have considered. I think partly because that market is getting smaller and smaller. It feels to me as though the chance that Carrick keeps his job is getting bigger and bigger. The crucial part is that it feels that he is the best candidate for those reasons, rather than as a sort of like maintaining the feel good factor thing. And that needs to come from honest conversations with the squad about whether they feel that this is sustainable. It could be that the answer is, yeah, we do. We think that we're playing really good football, getting on really well with the boss, and this is something that we can sustain not just off the back of a terrible season and bouncing back from it, but also into a full new league campaign. Or it could be that they think actually we just need a new manager, a fresh start. I think there need to be some really honest conversations there. But I do think the way that kind of the managerial market has changed since Amarin was sacked has improved Carrick's chances of keeping the job.
Matt Davis Adams
And a couple of months ago, Art, we'd have probably said that this was a great audition for Oliver Glasner to get this job. But as Karis alludes to, as he ruled himself out of that by the things that he said and done over the last couple of months, to be
Art De Rocher
fair, I mean, I'd be more on the side of. It's probably not been in his control, really, with the way that Carrick's got that side performing. Also, it feels like when you're looking at, I guess, managerial candidates and you have Carrick on one hand and Glasner on the other, they're two very different types of manager. So it almost comes down to, as Kara said, honest conversations, but also almost a, like, philosophical look at yourself. And what do you want the team to look like? Do you want it to be a team that's a bit more kind of traditional in the way they play, with Carrick having the back four and players in their actual positions, or do you want to go down the free at the back road again. I know it's not exactly the same as what Amren was doing there, and there is a lot more kind of structure to it that actually works with Glassner, but he is a very different manager, I would say, rather than Glassner's. I wouldn't even call it antics really, over the last few months, just the way everything's gone there. Even if things had gone smoothly, how things have gone with Carrick at Manchester United I think would have had a bigger impact than the way he's conducted himself recently.
Matt Davis Adams

This episode is dedicated to a comprehensive preview of the highly-anticipated Arsenal vs Chelsea match, with a detailed look at each team’s form, mindset, selection issues, and what to expect when the two London rivals face off. The panel also analyzes Chelsea’s recent discipline struggles, Arsenal’s search for performance consistency, Champions League pressure, and speculates on likely lineups and tactical approaches. Timestamps: 02:09 – 05:33
“It was massive. I think if they hadn't of won that game, then this game against Chelsea would have been even more tense than it could have been...” (Art, 02:41)
“At the end of the day, it just depends on what's happening on the football pitch. And what was happening at Tottenham was fun to watch, so it was easier…to, I guess, hop on board.” (Art, 03:35)
“Four mistakes leading to goals already for Arsenal. Got to cut that out, obviously…such a contrast to the start of the campaign where they didn’t even allow a shot on their goal.” (Matt, 04:21)
Timestamps: 05:33 – 10:39
“Chelsea don't win even when they play well…The simple reality is they failed to capitalise when they're on top and then they have a really silly moment…” (Sean, 05:46)
“There are a few red cards…where it was almost like Arsenal had done the hard work…and then they just undermine all of that by making this silly decision on the pitch.” (Art, 07:44)
“I wouldn't necessarily frame it as pressure on Rossinha…fans have kind of recognised it as mistakes from players rather than from the manager.” (Sean, 09:12)
Timestamps: 12:21 – 18:18
“He's only named an unchanged lineup three times…But with Ezer in particular, I thought it was quite interesting after the Spurs game that Arteta said he's understanding how to get the best out of him a bit better now.” (Art, 12:49)
“Chelsea fans love Josh Achinpong…he is still a kid and he is not perfect…so he'd probably be a lot of people's first choice. I wonder if given Arsenal's physicality, Rocinha might choose Tosin to partner Chalibur instead.” (Sean, 14:39)
“This feels like the first time this season that Chelsea have really had an informed striker…he’s really benefited from having Cole Palmer back.” (Sean, 16:57)
“Both teams have to take risks, they cannot afford to sit back and see what happens. They are both in really difficult kind of tight spots at the moment.” (Sean, 20:12)
Timestamps: 21:34 – 22:46
Timestamps: 25:53 – 47:03
“They're unbeaten in their last…I think it's 25 league or playoff matches that kicked off after five at Elland Road. That's like mad.” (Sean, 26:15) “Nico O’Reilly…a fullback, a midfielder…he's nailed on for the England squad…for the World Cup, given his versatility.” (Matt, 27:03)
“It’s now too late really for a managerial change to try and salvage something. It's a must win for them, obviously…but I just don’t see where either the cutting edge is coming from at the front or where the steel is coming from at the back.” (Sean, 35:17)
This episode provides a rich, tactical, and narrative-driven preview of Arsenal vs Chelsea and the wider Premier League weekend. It’s essential listening for fans wanting an informed, nuanced, and entertaining breakdown—whether you're an anxious Arsenal supporter, a frustrated Chelsea follower, or just a Premier League obsessive.
