By this point in the year, routines are real, not aspirational. And when it comes to supplements you're taking every day, trust really matters. But choosing the right supplements can be confusing, especially in a low regulation space, which means a lot of products cut corners, skip testing, or don't fully disclose what's inside. That's exactly why I choose Momentous. They've become the high trust brand in a low trust category. They weren't satisfied with the industry standard, so they built the Momentus standard. Their commitment to doing things the right way, not the easy way. What truly sets Momentus apart is their testing and transparency. Every product is independently certified by NSF for sport, meaning it's tested for contaminants, heavy metals, banned substances, and verified for label accuracy. So you always know exactly what you're putting in your body. And if a product doesn't meet their standard, it never hits the shelves. This is the athletic hockey show.
Sean Gentile
What up? What up? It's the Athletic hockey show for February 16, 2026. And folks, we made it. We got it. Gold medal game between the United States and Canada. For the seventh time in history at the Winter Olympics. And for that we, as a. Whether we're in the United States or in Canada or whatever, we can thank Marie Philippe Poulain. She scored twice for Canada in what was a pretty ugly 21 win over Switzerland in the semifinal game. Pullin's first goal was the 19th over Olympic career, which breaks Haley Wickenheiser's record. It was a funny one, too. I'm sure we'll talk about that in a second. The gold medal game is Thursday at 1:10 Eastern. The U.S. of course, punched their ticket with a pretty dominant 50 win over Sweden early in the day. We'll get to that shortly. But first, and I'm Sean Gentile and I'm joined by domestician. Hi, Dom.
Dominic (Dom)
Hi.
Sean Gentile
We need to talk. Poulain, because she's the story of the game and she's the story of the tournament again, at least for Canada. 2 goals giving her 20 overall. 13 of those have come in elimination games, which is like they flash that stat on the NBC broadcast here here in the States. And I did a double triple take on it. Like, I squinted at it for a while and I did some math and I said that simply can't be right. Turns out it is. And she's doing all that on a knee that's like pretty obviously giving her problems. We saw her ride a cart to the. To. To the ice service before the game with the Switzerland. The Swiss goaltender, Andrea Brantley. The CBC cameras caught her taking at Advil or whatever it was. She's. She's taken pain meds on the, on. On the bench there. It just adds to the legend, I think, and it makes it all the more impressive.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah, the fact she can't walk to the rink but can skate around and score Canada's only two goals today just is. What else can you say about Poland that hasn't been said?
Sean Gentile
I know already.
Dominic (Dom)
Where would Canada be without Poland? We already got a brief glimpse of that.
Sean Gentile
The bronze medal game, I think, like.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah, maybe they got smoked by the US in group play without Pullen. If Len was not playing today, who knows what we'd be talking about right now. But it could be a. The second time that Canada and USA don't face off in the gold medal game. She was that vital today.
Sean Gentile
Yeah. I was talking to Haley about this a couple days ago. Just as it relates to the knee injury with Poland specifically. I don't even want to say that all goat candidates across sports have this because it's not true. Some players get hurt. And some players come back from injuries, and some players overcome serious injuries over the course of their career. Like, you don't have to have this kind of ability that Poulain seems to have, but there's a subset of players, and I think of her and I think of Sidney Crosby for the most part, outside of. Outside of the concussion issues, when you're talking about, you know, LeBron James, great example, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, these are guys who, yes, the quarterbacks, like, have blown out their ACLs at one time or another, but generally, generally there's a subset of goat candidate that just somehow seems to avoid serious injury. And like, there's. There's. There's minor injuries. Yes, but they're. But they have this extra, like their 80% is. Is good enough to help them play through that. And whether it's like hockey sense or a sixth sense, you know, like the. The brains, help them avoid situations where they. Where they potentially, you know, would. Would incur, you know, pretty brutal injuries. And that's.
Dominic (Dom)
That.
Sean Gentile
That was my thought. Whenever. Whenever Polin initially got hurt, that was an injury that takes out a normal person. Right. But it feels like she had the sense to turn out of it a little bit at the end. And she's got the conditioning maybe where her lower body is just so much stronger than the average person's, you know, where for whatever reason, it just. It just didn't stick. And now here we are a few days later, we're talking about her scoring the 20th goal of her. Of her Olympic career sets a record that was held by Haley Wickenheiser. And she's the reason to believe in this team. Like, there's. We're going to talk about the US Team that was a juggernaut win over Sweden earlier. Like, there are times coming. But the reason that this game has juice and the reason, you know, there's. That there is reason to believe in Canada is because of the presence of Marie Philippa Lynch. She's that good and she's that special.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah. And she's that clutch. She's done it before in past gold medal games where she has been the hero. When. As soon as you mentioned that goat theory, the first thing to mind is these are all smart players who know where to be, how to play, how to avoid those things. And I think that hockey sense is going to come in handy in a game where Canada enters as a significant underdog based on not just the game that they played against the US Without Poland, but everything we've seen throughout this tournament. Where they have struggled to create offense in a way that can actually lead to goals. They have been a bit sloppier defensively. They don't have the weapons they usually do all throughout the lineup. And the defense as well is just struggling to move the puck.
Sean Gentile
Do you have updated odds for this too, by the way? Yes, I thought. Yeah, I thought you might. What are they?
Dominic (Dom)
So we started at like 50, 49 US, which was mostly because I ignored the rivalry series. I was on the impression it was mostly an exhibition. They're just tuning up. It's not a big deal on talent, on paper, talents like, I think Canada should have a lot more juice than this. And so every game I've like expected scorelines. Canada underperforms them, USA overperforms theirs. And so throughout the tournament, USA's edge over Canada just continues to grow and grow. Obviously the 5 nothing game was huge for that, but now we're at a point where, because USA is not letting in any goals because Canada only beat Switzerland 2:1, right. We're now at 65 USA. And honestly, that couldn't even feel that. Like, that feels light too. Like, I think. Yeah, the odds makers are even higher than that. I think after the 5 nothing loss, they put it to like 75%.
Sean Gentile
It feels light. But it's also a 15 points wing from the start of the tournament, which is, which is significant. Like, that alone says, I think what the disparities, you know, been like between, between these teams. The other, the other point I wanted to make is Sarah Nurse. Let's, let's. Let's talk about her. I think when you look at the way the production has shaken out for the Canadian team, you have Polin doing everything in a lot of ways. You have Sarah Filier, who's been really productive. You have Darrell Watts who, Who is back on that line on a seeming. The amount of shifts that that first line took, that the Poulin Philly Watts line took was, Was ludicrous. Those are the three productive offensive players right now. Basically there is the Blair. The Blair Turnbull line also gets a lot of run. That's a. So that's a solid, you know, substantive third line. But yeah, it's a checking line. Like they're not, they're not, they're not out there to generate offensive chances where I think there's two primary areas that we've seen Canada struggling. One is defensively where they're just having trouble linking up with the forward. So you're seeing a lot of stuff die in the neutral zone. And there's some bad moments for Jocelyn Larocque tonight. There's. Claire Thompson was generally not at her best. There are issues there, but I think the more pressing one and the more glaring one is the lack of production from that second layer of player. Right. Not Pullen, not Philly, not Darrell Watts, but the Sarah Nurses of the world like Natalie Spooner on the power play hasn't done much since the initial pop there. That to me is the most glaring issue there is that beyond that top line, there's no one on defensively. There's, there's, there's no one on, on the, on, on the second line that's, you know, generating much in, in terms of offensive chances or production.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah, if you're going to stack the top line, which Canada is doing, it's not a bad call if you have another line that can go. And the fourth line has been really productive given their usage, which is great. But Sereners had 18 points in 2022. Jenner had nine goals. Neither of them have been as productive as you expect. And that's like the missing link between having that strong checking line, having the depth scoring that you want from the fourth line and having the superstars up top. You're missing a productive second line. And I, the weird thing is not in production. Like I barely noticed Sereners out there at all.
Sean Gentile
It's, it's not, we're not even talking point production here. We're talking zone time. We're talking, you know, puck possess type stuff. And I feel like they're not even getting that like in it. It bears itself out when you just look at the stat sheet. Kristen o' Neill is a really good player like she. And she's having a great Olympics and she deserves credit for making her first team at 27 years of age. I believe Julia Gosling is in her first. Like she's, she's been great. Three goals. Like she's, she's a, she's a, she's a relevant player. They should not be your third and fourth leading point getters. If, if you're, if you're a Team Canada, that is a problem and it's no knock on them. But I think that is where it's most glaring. As you, as you look down, you know, there's Emma Malte towards the bottom. There's Sarah Nurse with two assists in six games. That's not, that's not going to work. And that to me is, is the, is the big. If you want to find one lightning bolt answer for why we've Seen stuff shake out the way that it has. I think it's. I think it's that.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah. And I wonder too, if maybe we see Julia Gosling move up into the top nine based on how productive she's been. Yes, her stats pdub are terrific considering the usage she gets. I think she only gets around 14, 15 minutes. But she has been a really productive player this year and she's one of Canada's younger players. You'd hope that considering all the issues that have percolated throughout the tournament, that they'd give her a bit more play with someone struggling like Nurse, like Jenner.
Sean Gentile
And I didn't even mention Brian Jenner. Like, she's. It's her. Her and Nurse are the two players that, you know who's. Whose lack of production is being felt most acutely by this team. Absolutely.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah. And you can blame Nurse not being on the power play. That's like. I don't.
Ad Host 1
I'm.
Dominic (Dom)
I'm confused by the second power planning three defensemen on it considering defenders are having. But even at even strength, just Sarah Nurse has just been a non factor.
Sean Gentile
Yeah. But yeah, I think. I think Julia Gosling is some kind of solution. Like, I. I think she. She needs more minutes. And we did see her on the power play a good bit today, but big body. She's 5 foot 11. She looks taller than that out there, honestly. And she's got a rocket of a shot. I think she's someone who looks like, you know, just based on the way this is shaken out, I feel like she's. She's one of their very best options. And I think they do. They do well and. And would be smart to involve her a little bit more foreign.

Sean Gentile
Experian. The reason secondary scoring, I think has stepped to the forefront here is because of what we've seen from the United States. And it's an incredible win over Sweden. The shutout streaks up to 331 minutes and change, which is incredible. They haven't a lot of goals since February 5 against Czechia, which is a lifetime ago. Don they have 15 players who've scored goals now. Like this is, this is a team that, yes, they have that top, that, that top level ability. Yes. You know, Caroline Harvey's a superstar and Abby Murphy is like the face of the U.S. olympic team. Overall, I think there are names at the top of the lineup that are producing and doing their thing, but they're also getting plenty of production from, from elsewhere. And obviously there's five more goals against, against Sweden got Taylor Heisey scoring a goal and you know, on, on and on and on the, the, the list, the list kind of continues. I think that kind of production is what, is what makes the lack of, the lack of production from Jenner, from Nurse, from those players you mentioned earlier, you know, even, even more glaring.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah, it's, it's terrifying to watch. And I think that was pretty obvious like early in the tournament. I remember, I think it was the first game, I'm like, wow, this team is fast. They're unbelievable. They move the puck so well. They trust their young players. They look like they have it. And you watch Canada play. I forget who they they played first but they just had no sauce. They had their. The vibes felt so off with the way they played. They seemed like very disjointed. They seemed significantly slower. And it just felt like after one game you can tell that this would be a. Like the. The US Team was going to have a great time against. They did.
Sean Gentile
If Switzerland could win puck races coming out of Canadian turnovers, I think that game's completely different. Like, they had multiple opportunities gift wrapped for them, including one by Emma Malte down the stretch where, you know, the pucks up for grabs due to Canadian mismanagement. And you're like, if the Swiss had more players with better legs out there, who knows what. Who knows what happened. The shot clock was lopsided. It was 45, 7 or whatever. It was. So credit to Canada on that end of things, I suppose. But I don't think that was indicative of the way the game played out.
Dominic (Dom)
They played the Corsi Hockey League. I think they had like seven scoring chances and like 85 shot attempts. Like, they. They weren't really threatening in a way that you see the Americans threaten, like every single shift. They're like dominating possession in the offensive zone, but they're trying to get inside. And you see a lot of the bronze medal contenders in this tournament, they play a shell. They park some kind of bus and try to clog the middle as much as possible and four shots from the outside. But I feel like the United States has a way better ability to penetrate the middle. And because Canada doesn't play that way, they play like a favorite. I think USA picked them apart a lot in that first game. And it's frightening to think about what will happen in the gold medal game where they have to tighten things up considerably.
Sean Gentile
Who should. So are they the 2020 hurricanes? Like, what course cup team are we talking here? Those are damning comparisons when you're talking about games with stakes. Gold medal games, just like playoff series. Like, yeah, not. Not great. And again, that's. It was a pretty strong effort by the U.S. in the semifinals. There. There was a moment there in that game where it looked like Sweden, right? That it looked like. It looked like Sweden was going to. Was going to have a chance. It was at the start of the second period, there was a kind of a flurry of shots by Sweden. They go in the power play. US Gets the kill. Their. Their PK is nine of nine in the tournament, I believe. And then Heisey scores immediately off a feed from Bilka. And not kind of felt like that they were up to 2:0 midway through the second period. And then the dams. The dam just kind of broke again. They got goals from. From Heisey and Kayla Barnes and Murphy scored and Kendall Coins Cofield scored. Haley Skimoire. Like, this is. You know, this is the exact kind of. Yeah, this is the exact.
Dominic (Dom)
Everyone everybody is Canada lucky they didn't get Sweden because Sweden can skate a bit. They can threaten a lot more. They have a potential future superstar in Hilda Svensson who's lighting up Ohio.
Ad Host 4
At.
Sean Gentile
Ohio State's Benton is. Yeah.
Dominic (Dom)
So I think there's interesting.
Sean Gentile
There's interesting young players on that Sweden team that seems like. That seems like would make them a pretty. A pretty rough match for Canada at this point. So Credit. Credit where it's due. I guess you can. You can only beat the teams you play. But yeah, it does. It does feel like if this was the game that Canada brought to us Sweden matchup who lord, it would have been a lot.
Dominic (Dom)
It would be even scarier than that was which was shockingly like if. If Switzerland didn't take that penalty in the last two minutes there. There's some. Some tight behinds.
Sean Gentile
Yep.
Dominic (Dom)
Going into that last two minutes.
Sean Gentile
Lemon Lemon. Booty time for.
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah.
Sean Gentile
Our. For our neighbors to the north. Aaron Frankel's playing well for the United States too. I. I want to. I want to say that 330 consecutive minutes as a team of shutout hockey. Frankel actually faced 21 shots today because there again there was that stretch in the second period where Sweden. Where Sweden looked like they had some juice and she made it. And she made it stand up. So I think that's a good game if you're the United States. For the goaltender to have coming into this, coming this one, you get a little. Get tested to some degree. You know, you feel even better about that. It's tough and we can wrap with this and we can lean into the Canadian of it. On your end of things, what is your reason for optimism, if you have one, about Canada's chances headed into this game on Thursday afternoon? My reason is it just pullin.
Dominic (Dom)
It is. It is not just Poulin. I think they got smacked in the face enough in that first game that I'm coping with the hope that there may be a better game plan after facing that adversity. I in. In the pwhl and Rene Debien has stronger numbers than Frankel. I'm hoping for a tight one one game where Poulin can be the hero again. I hope that second line wakes up and things start clicking for them, but I. It's. It is. It's looking uphill right now.
Sean Gentile
Five, one, baby. U.S. makes Canada look like Sweden. It's going to be easy. Easy pickings.
Dominic (Dom)
They've made every team look exactly the same. It's so funny that every game's like, five nothing, five nothing. Five nothing. Five nothing. Ooh. Italy will score one more. Six nothing.
Sean Gentile
It's going to be interesting and we're going to have tons of coverage for you here. Haley Salvian, of course, is in Milan. She's doing double duty for the athletic and cbc, so she is extremely busy. I'm sure she's got some great stuff coming out over the next couple of days. She's got you covered there on the side end of things. We're going to be potting throughout. I think it'll be the two of us. I believe in some combination of Shayna for the gold medal game on Thursday. So stick around for us. It's going to be a lot of fun, man. There's not. There's nothing better than this. It's one of those things where it's such a cliche and you got to find different ways to say it, but ultimately, U.S. versus Canada and women's hockey at the Olympics, you know, what more could you ask for? We're lucky we got it. And we can thank MPP for that one, right?
Dominic (Dom)
Yeah. Yeah. It should have been a given and it almost wasn't.
Sean Gentile
Here we are. Thank you, Dominic. Thanks to you. Thanks to you fine folks for listening to the Athletic Hockey Show. Max and Jesse are back tomorrow along with Arpin Basu, who's in. Who's in Milan. That's going to happen after the completion of the men's qualification playoffs. There's a ton of games tomorrow, so enjoy those. I'm back Wednesday with McIndu, possibly Frankie Corrado. We're. We're going to talk men's quarterfinals next time you hear from. From us. So we'll see you then. Enjoy the games. Enjoy the rest of the week. And again from a man who loves his country, a proud American. Thank you, Marie Philippe Polin, for said for setting this one up. It's. It's what we needed.

In this instant reaction episode, Sean and Dom break down the women's Olympic semifinals, which have set up a much-anticipated gold-medal rematch between the United States and Canada. They extensively discuss the performances of both teams, with a heavy focus on Marie-Philip Poulin’s heroics, Canada’s offensive and defensive struggles, and the United States’ overwhelming depth and dominance. Peppered throughout are sharp analyses, memorable quotes, and implications for the upcoming final.
[02:39 - 07:25]
Performance & Legacy:
Poulin scored both Canadian goals in a 2-1 win over Switzerland, sending Canada to the gold medal game.
Playing Through Injury:
Despite a significant knee issue, Poulin remains the focal point of Canadian offense.
Comparison to Sports "GOATs":
Sean likens Poulin’s big-game presence and resilience to superstars across sports who avoid debilitating injuries and perform under duress.
[07:25 - 14:32]
Underdog Status:
Canada faces steep odds against the U.S., with betting lines heavily in the Americans’ favor (up to 75%).
Top-Heavy Production:
Canada's offense is carried by Poulin, Fillier, and Watts. Depth scoring is absent—especially from players like Sarah Nurse and Brianne Jenner.
Defensive Struggles:
Defenders are struggling to move the puck or link up with forwards. Specific players like Jocelyne Larocque and Claire Thompson have had tough games.
Potential Solutions:
Julia Gosling’s emergence raises the question if she should get more ice time to spark the offense.
[16:15 – 21:39]
Defensive Prowess & Depth:
The U.S. has not allowed a goal in over 330 minutes and boasts 15 different goal scorers. Their offense and defense are both dominating.
Contrast to Canada:
The U.S. play is fast, unified, and threatening shift after shift—making Canada’s struggles more glaring.
Sweden Semifinal Recap:
The U.S. controlled the game, breaking through in the second after a brief Swedish push. Special mention to goaltender Aaron Frankel, who faced a rare test.
[21:39 – 23:25]
Chances & Optimism:
Dom highlights the need for a better Canadian game plan and hopes for second-line awakenings. Sean is skeptical, jokingly predicting a lopsided U.S. win.
Historical Context & Excitement:
Both hosts reflect on how fortunate fans are to have another U.S. vs. Canada final, crediting Poulin for ensuring the matchup.
Sean on Poulin's dominance:
“She’s doing all that on a knee that’s… obviously giving her problems… it just adds to the legend, I think, and it makes it all the more impressive.” [03:37]
Dom on Canadian depth:
“If you’re going to stack the top line, which Canada is doing… but Sarah Nurse had 18 points in 2022. Jenner had nine goals. Neither… have been as productive as you expect. And that’s like the missing link…” [11:14]
Sean on discrepancy in teams’ momentum:
“Every game I’ve expected scorelines—Canada underperforms them, USA overperforms theirs, and so throughout the tournament, USA’s edge over Canada just continues to grow and grow.” [08:19]
Dom on US team’s speed and cohesion:
“This team is fast. They’re unbelievable. They move the puck so well. They trust their young players. They look like they have it. And you watch Canada play…they just had no sauce.” [17:32]
Sean on historical significance:
“It’s one of those things where it’s such a cliché and you gotta find different ways to say it, but ultimately, U.S. versus Canada and women’s hockey at the Olympics—what more could you ask for?” [23:25]
This episode offers a thorough, candid breakdown of the contrasting paths, strengths, and weaknesses of the U.S. and Canadian women’s teams heading into the Olympic gold medal game. The hosts’ sharp analyses, focus on star power (especially Poulin), and appreciation for the rivalry make for a must-listen for hockey fans eager to understand not only what happened but why the matchup matters.
