Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily and this is the Bible recap for kids. Today's Bible verse, Genesis chapter 39, verse 2 says the Lord was with Joseph. So he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Our reading today opens with one of Joseph's brothers, Judah, who gets himself into giant mess. Judah arranges a marriage for his oldest son with a woman named Tamar. When the oldest son dies, Judah gives Tamar to his second son instead. Then when the second son dies, Judah tells Tamar to wait around until his third son grows up. He's still just a kid. Tamar decides she doesn't want to wait and she takes matters into her own sinful hands. And as we've seen, when other people in the Bible have taken matters into their own hands, it doesn't go well. Long story short, Tamar gets pregnant and has Judah's not his son's babies. And they name these twin boys Perez and Zerah. During this same time, Joseph is a slave in Egypt. But he's not alone. The Bible tells us four times that the Lord was with Joseph. Potiphar, the Egyptian official who bought Joseph, notices that everything Joseph does is successful. Potiphar's wife wants Joseph for herself, but when he refuses to sin, she tells a lie about him that sends him to prison. But even there, God is with Joseph and Joseph proves himself to be wise and trustworthy. Today, by God, God keeps his promises. God promised Abraham, Judas and Joseph's great grandfather that he would bless Abraham with descendants like the stars. Over and over again we see that when people doubted God, they decided to take matters into their own hands. Even in spite of the sinful messes people get themselves into, God is still at work on his plan. In fact, Judah, Tamar and Perez are even listed as ancestors of Jesus. What's an ancestor? Well, it's a good word to remember. Word to remember. An ancestor is someone before you in your family line, like a parent of a parent of a parent. When we learn about Jesus ancestors, we see that even though they and we are broken and unfaithful, God is whole and faithful. He keeps every promise he's ever made and he's where the joy is.
