Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily, and this is the Bible recap
Narrator
for kids. Today's Bible verse
Ms. Emily
Judges, chapter 2, verses 20 and 21 says the Lord burned with anger against Israel. He said, because these people have violated my covenant, which I made with their ancestors, and have ignored my commands, I will no longer drive out the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. When you hear the word judge, you probably think of someone who's in charge of a courtroom. But in the Book of Judges, each judge was a leader of God's people. God is in charge and makes the rules, but he gives the people judges to help lead them. Remember the last instruction Joshua gave to the leaders of Israel to drive out the remaining Canaanites? They didn't do it. And as the Israelites see the things that the Canaanites have, fancy buildings and art and exciting cities, they want to be like them instead of like God. God shows up as the angel of the Lord to rebuke them. And that is a not so fun, but very important word to remember.
Narrator
Word to remember. To rebuke is to express sharp disapproval.
Ms. Emily
He tells them that their sin will make them turn to worshiping idols. God wants his people's hearts. Even though he's all powerful, he doesn't force our obedience. In the Bible, we see a pattern of God's people promising they'll never forget what he's done for them, quickly turning away from him and then facing the consequences of their sin. And over and over, we see God's patience and compassion when they call out to him and he forgives them. The more we understand and experience God's great love for us, the more we'll want to obey Him. Obeying him brings us joy because he's where the joy is. D.
