Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily, and this is the Bible recap for giants. Today's Bible verse, Judges, chapter 8, verse 34, says they forgot the Lord their God, who had rescued them from all their enemies surrounding them. Gideon wins a few more battles and quickly moves from scared to too arrogant. He decides that he should be the king of Israel, even naming one of his sons Abimelech, which means my father is king. Yikes. Pretty bold, Gideon. God didn't make Gideon a king, so deciding this himself is a sin. And as we've seen over and over, when God's people sin against him, there are consequences. Abimelech is even more selfish and scheming than his dad, and pretty soon he decides that it's his turn to be king. Abimelek kills his brothers and declares himself king. But Abimelek doesn't know that his younger brother Jotham got away. Jotham climbs up to the top of Mount Gerizim and tells the people a story about trees and a fore thornbush. Abimelech is of course, the thorn bush in the story, and he brings death and destruction everywhere he goes. Eventually, a woman drops a giant stone from a rooftop and it kills him. God is protective. When we love something or someone, we do everything we can to protect it. God, who loves us more than we can imagine, is fiercely protective of his people. Even though they forget him again and again, God still loves his people and brings justice to protect them. He's where the justice is and he's where the joy is.
