Let's go foreign.
Bill Landis
Welcome back to the Bill and Doug Show. Doug Land Reese and Bill Landis your number one place for analysis of mid SEC teams playing each other in the playoffs. So like listen, there's this is not a year ago this was a northern college football round. We had games at Penn State and Ohio State and, and Notre Dame and wasn't it lovely? And this year we have games at Oklahoma and Texas A M and Ole Miss and, and Oregon and it is wonderful for, for those places to host. But if you consume college football content, I think you know that like we are not going to give you the best breakdown in the country for Alabama, Oklahoma, but we'll give you a pick.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, we just want to be on the record with our pick for who we think will win that game. This week we got one northern game. We got Oregon's hosting.
Bill Landis
But yeah, yeah, last week or on conference championship weekend we did make nine picks. I was five and four. You were three and six. You're ahead of me by five for the season. I've been catching up a little bit, but I'm still way behind. You're 56 and 58 against the spread for the season. I'm 51 and 63, which is 12 games under.500, which is not great.
Doug Lee Maurice
So going the wrong direction and people.
Bill Landis
Are complaining about like I just, there's still too much complaining about stuff. We got four playoff games and it's great and I don't know why people are so mad at JMU and Tulane. I think it's, I think it's fine and I think it's maybe even better than fine. I think it's cool and it's it's part of what this playoff, I think, should be that, like, making the playoff is a reward and a version of success in and of itself. And I don't think that every playoff should demand to be filled only with teams who can win the championship, because I don't think that's true of any sport in the world. There's plenty of teams who make the playoff who are not going to win the title. But it's still worth making the playoff, right?
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I think so. Although it does seem. Seem like maybe like they're trying to get in front of it. Actually, did you see this earlier on. On Wednesday, what Ross Dellinger tweeted. Ross Dellinger of Yah. Yahoo now tweeted. Next year, CFP model stands to introduce. Introduce change, even if it's not expanded.
Bill Landis
Right.
Doug Lee Maurice
Mou signed in 2024, assigns each Power 4 champ an automatic qualifier and a top 12 guarantee for Notre Dame, meaning that if Notre Dame's in the top 12, it also makes the playoffs. So under those rules, Duke would be in the field this year instead of James Madison, and Notre Dame would be in the field instead of Miami.
Bill Landis
Right. Which are the two most controversial things. I mean, I get it. No one expected, it was never intended, and nobody really ever thought we were going to have two group of six teams in. But it's because the ACC stunk and screwed up their tiebreaker and the ACC still got a team in. So, like, I get it, it's fine. But I also. I think it's fine now. Right. I don't think it ruined the playoff for this year.
Doug Lee Maurice
I'm just looking up on CFB graphs what they say about a Duke 14 and a half or Oregon favored. No, that's his neutral. Sorry, what is it? At home on neutral. Oregon favored by 14 and a half at home.
Bill Landis
If it was Duke versus Oregon instead of JMU versus Oregon. Okay. Yeah.
Doug Lee Maurice
166 CFB grass projects a margin of victory of 16.3 and the line for Oregon. JMU is what, 21 and a half?
Bill Landis
21 and a half. Yeah. So, okay.
Doug Lee Maurice
Not that different.
Bill Landis
It's fine. We still have like two pretty good games.
Doug Lee Maurice
Let's make our picks.
Bill Landis
Bam. At Oklahoma Friday night. Oklahoma is a 1 1/2 point favorite. If we were doing a draft, does.
Doug Lee Maurice
That go back and forth? I think it has Oklahoma. Yeah. Okay. I thought I saw Bama favorite at one point.
Bill Landis
Yeah. I think you could argue if you did a. If you did a draft of the most important players in the playoff, maybe he wouldn't be the Number one pick because again, I don't think Oklahoma is an actual national title contender. But John Matiere would be up there. The Oklahoma quarterback who was a Heisman candidate in September, hurt his hand, had surgery and has just been a different guy completely since then. And then as a result comes into the playoff as like the lowest ranked quarterback in the playoff of these 12 teams with the way he's played when you put the entire season together. But I think like Brent Venables has said, like he's kind of better than he's been since he had the hand surgery. And if you get good John Matier, that matters, right?
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I think that is like, yeah. What if he plays well? What does that mean? Like I, I, I don't know. He's pretty dynamic when he's on. He just hasn't been on for two months. So. Yeah, that's a pretty big X factor. Yeah. I don't know how you couch it. Like, if you just want to say like who's who, the biggest X factors, the most important, whatever. But I, I do think that sort of, I guess it's an unknown, right? Like it's a long, it's a long layoff to kind of get healthy and get your mind and body right. So I guess I wouldn't be floored if he's, if he suddenly showed up a somewhat different quarterback than he's been for most of the season or that he was even when Oklahoma beat Alabama. I don't know that I on it, but it would be interesting.
Bill Landis
First four games he had eight big time throws and four turnover worthy plays. He missed one game while he was hurt. The last seven games he has three big time throws and 13 turnover worthy plays. These teams did play in November. November 15th. Oklahoma won 2321. But Alabama outgained Oklahoma four hundred and six yards to 212. In that game, Alabama had 23 first downs. Oklahoma had 12 first downs. But Alabama turned it over three times, two fumbles and a pick. And Alabama kind of feels like, well, if we don't give the ball away three times, maybe we'll win this thing. Oklahoma's defense is pretty darn good. Overall rating SP + Oklahoma's 12 Bamas 13 FEI rating Bama's 10, Oklahoma's 13. So they're pretty close. The Oklahoma defense is the best unit in this game. They're like a top four or five defense kind of like wherever you look. But the Oklahoma offense, especially with John Mateer not playing well is the worst unit in this game. So I think Part of it is, can. Can the Oklahoma offense elevate? But even if not, can the Oklahoma defense win it? And it's one of those things. Yeah. Well, what if Alabama doesn't turn the ball over three times? Like, also, I don't know. You play a good. A good defense sometimes turn the ball over.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. Oklahoma's offense might be the worst unit in the whole playoff field.
Bill Landis
Yeah, right. True.
Doug Lee Maurice
They're talented. Like, they have. They have more NFL guys than, like, Tulane and James Madison doing either side of the ball. But how they've played. I think you could say that it's the worst unit in the playoff. I just, like, I don't know. And the total, super low. The total's 40 and a. 40 and a half. Like, for a playoff game. That's. That's quite low. But both these teams, I think, tend to not score a ton when they play big games. I was curious about this because I. I view Kaylin DeBoer as a guy who usually does pretty well in big games and. And often does well when he's got extra time to prepare. Do you know what Kaylin DeBoer's record is with more than a week to prepare since 2021, which was his second season as the head coach at Fresno State?
Bill Landis
I do not.
Doug Lee Maurice
10 and 1.
Bill Landis
Okay. Okay. Which sometimes happens, like, with offensive masterminds. Yeah, right. Like, especially when you're the head. We talk about a lot with Ryan Day. It's like, okay, well, you're dealing with all this stuff during the season. You have to be the head coach. But, like, give me a little extra time to spend even a little more time noodling around and drawing up some new stuff. And I like my chances.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. I looked up Brent Venables. His record with extra time repair at Oklahoma, it's 4 and 3. But two of the wins are against Kaylin DeBoer. So it's like they don't like Caleb divorce. 10 and 1. And that really catches your attention. Alabama was not coming off of a buy when it played Oklahoma, but Oklahoma was coming off of a buy when it played Alabama the last two years and beat them the last two years. So Kaylin Deborah has. Has not beaten Brett Venables. They've been head coaches in the sec. And Venables, like, defensive mastermind, whatever. He's got extra time to prepare, too. I don't know. I just think. I think the board's got a good big game track record, and obviously his record shows that he's good with extra time to prepare. So I don't. Maybe that doesn't matter, but I thought it was interesting.
Bill Landis
Yeah, I'm a little. I. I don't know about Ty Simpson, the Alabama quarterback in this spot.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah.
Bill Landis
Yeah. Oklahoma has 41 sacks. That's up there among the best in the country. I think they might be first in tackles for loss. Alabama's allowed 25 sacks. That's 85th in the country. That's not good. I just think they'll get after him. I'm taking Oklahoma. I just. I can't. Haven't believed in Bama the entire year. I was. I had a stretch where I was picking against Bama every week and they won like four straight games. But like, you can go back and say, like, I probably lost. Should have lost two of those. I'm not sure it's one of these things. It's just like somebody has to make the playoff. And I like the 12 team. I don't want to, like, I don't want to murder the 12 team playoff by saying I don't think either Alabama or Oklahoma really belong here. That they're just like. If you're going to complain about James Madison and Tulane not being national title contenders, neither are Bama and Oklahoma. Neither of these teams is winning the national title. They're not going to. And this is one of. This is something that I want us to at least have an opinion on. Who would make the most interesting game in the next round. So I'm going to pick Oklahoma, but actually number one, Indiana. And Kurt Signetti, who used to be an assistant at Alabama playing Bama, I actually kind of want to see that. I'd rather. I think Indiana Bama is more interesting than Indiana Oklahoma. But I'm going to pick Oklahoma 2016.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. Beating Alabama still carries a little more weight to it.
Bill Landis
Right.
Doug Lee Maurice
If Indiana were to do that, as it just continues going through the season where it's an undefeated Big ten champion that has already beaten Oregon and Ohio State. Like, adding Alabama to that would be quite. Quite a thing. Yeah, I think Bama's gonna win. I think the extra time will matter. I think Bama will probably not give the ball away quite as much. Oklahoma needed a defensive score in that game as well. I just think maybe the ball bounces a little differently for Bama. Look, super low scoring. And both these teams, by the way, 19 of their 25 games combined have gone under. Oh, I have Bama 2113, which is Obama cover. And. And under. Okay.
Bill Landis
All right, let's go to noon on Saturday. Miami at Texas 2016, 2016 Oklahoma 2016 Miami at Texas A M. Texas A M favored by three and a half Saturday at noon. These teams actually played a home and home series I kind of forgot in 22 and 23. So it's like, okay, cool. These are like cross sectional rival. They've never. It's like, oh, no, they just played each other. It's like, okay, that's fine. They also did a home at home in 2007 and 08 and they played in 1944. I think Miami has a 3, 2 edge FEI ratings. Miami's 9, Texas a M's 11, SP plus Texas a M is 8, Miami is 9. Miami is a little more of a defense first team and Texas A M is a little bit more of an offense first team. It's a good game, man. Right? It's a good game.
Doug Lee Maurice
It is a good game, but there's a there again and I realize that like scoring offense and scoring defense are not like the most sophisticated of stats, but Texas A M is a little bit of an outlier. Did you know that in this playoff field we have among the score scoring defenses, national ranks, we have number one, number two, number three, number six, number seven, number eight and number ten. We have basically the entire top ten scoring defenses are in the playoff. Texas A M is 41st, Tulane is 50th. So Tulane is worst, but Texas A and M is the only other team that's outside the top 10 in scoring defense in the playoff field. Okay.
Bill Landis
I think that's telling us something about maybe what you're thinking here.

If we, if we were ranking the best eight teams in the first round, we know what the seeds are. Five through 12 is. Is Oregon number one. Bill, let's, let's do our rankings of best teams in the first round. Oregon one.
Doug Lee Maurice
Oregon one.
Bill Landis
Who's two?
Doug Lee Maurice
I think I would say Miami, who's three. A M. Okay.
Bill Landis
That's like where I am too, that these are like two of the three best teams in the first round and they're playing each other and, and the, the world would be a better place if they had flip flopped A M and Ole Miss. And Ole Miss was playing Miami and A M was playing Tulane. And then I would be picking A M and I'd be picking Miami to be Ole Miss. But instead here we are and we have to deal with this. And I'm still not exactly sure why Ole Miss is ahead of Texas A and M. I guess schedule strength. They just played a couple tougher teams in the SEC because A M kind of had that schedule. But I think A M is a better team, especially with Ole misses, coaches leaving and all that stuff. I, I think Miami is an intriguing team. I don't want to go too far with like dangerous team, but I am really curious to see what Miami looks like on Saturday. And I, I won't be shocked if they look awesome, but, and, and this is one of those. This is the worst version of podcasting. I won't be shocked if they look awesome, but I also won't be shocked if they look awful. But I also think if Miami wins, they'll win by a lot. But if Texas A and M wins, it'll be close. I don't even know what that means. We're covering every out possible outcome now. There's a ceiling to Miami. I think that they showed early and I wonder how much of it is still there. I think when you look at the raw talent, you can see it and I'm curious if it comes out on Saturday and if it does, what that means for a second round game against Ohio State. Also most interesting game. I think Miami. Ohio State's more interesting than Texas A and M. Ohio State, even if it's just about Sean Taylor and Maurice Claret.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I think it's more interesting too. Those programs just like intersect more. Yep.
Motivational Sports Announcer
Recruiting.
Doug Lee Maurice
Recruiting wise. Yeah, I think that's a far more compelling matchup. I think this is another game where you really don't trust either quarterback. Yep. Marcel Reed back half of the year not played very well. Carson Beck like has played well. Miami hasn't really played anybody all that good, I guess, like, they played pit. Pitt's got a good defense, but Pitt's also got, like, Pitt's got the kind of defense that it, like, can really get after you, but as long as you can block them, like, you can kind of do what you want. And Miami has a good offensive line, so I don't know what to make of Carson Beck's play. I think I probably trust him a little more. But these are also two defenses that can really get after quarterbacks. And neither one of these guys are good under pressure. I looked at, like, the FBS quarterbacks are PFF grade under pressure. Beck is 86. Marcel Reed is 75th. Like, not just not neither. Yeah. So I think if I had to choose one, I would choose back, but I don't know that I'd love either one. Okay.
Bill Landis
Carson beck, in their two losses, he threw four picks against Louisville, and he threw two picks against Texas a M. He's thrown four picks in their 10 wins and he's thrown six picks in their two losses. So, like, I don't, I don't know, like, I, I, I wouldn't ride Miami. I'm not sitting here picking Miami to win the national championship. I don't think you can ride this head coach quarterback combination and expect four wins. But can they get something together on a Saturday? I'm taking Miami. 3117.
Doug Lee Maurice
I am taking Miami, but closer. 31, 27. I think the, I think the lines of scrimmage will be the difference maker. Like, I, I don't know. And like, I don't really know how much Ayan has been tested this year, to be honest. I think they just got really lucky with their SEC schedule and they shouldn't have beaten Notre Dame. And they got beat by Texas, and Texas hasn't run the ball on anybody. But they ran it on A. M. Yep. I think, I think Miami gets it done on the road.
Bill Landis
Watch party at Notre Dame. In the team room, Marcus Freeman is providing popcorn where they can sit around and watch the game and yell up the screen and say, we're better than them. We're better than them. They beat us. They beat us. They both beat us, but we're better than them. What are you gonna do?
Doug Lee Maurice
Will he be wearing a New York Giants jersey when he does that?
Bill Landis
For real? Do you think he's gonna go to the NFL?
Doug Lee Maurice
No, I don't, actually. But good for him for getting his name out there.
Bill Landis
I, I just wonder, like, isn't being the coach at Notre Dame Better than being the coach of the New York Giants. Like, I, I, I, I, I, I am curious how we get it, like, nil. And I don't have to deal with boosters and all this stuff, but it's like the college is getting more professional and the prestige and the opportunity to, like, build a life. NFL coaches are so disposable, right? I mean, there's a couple exceptions to the rule. Mike Tomlin or Andy Reid or whatever, right. If you win at the highest level. But college coaches become legends. And I just like, you would get. He's off to such a good start at Notre Dame. He would get a lot of leeway, I think, for things to go wrong. Whereas he could go to the New York Giants and get fired in three years and then he's the defensive coordinator at Florida State. And, like, what have you done to yourself? And, like, the instinct is like, I have to test myself in the NFL. Like, why?
Doug Lee Maurice
Because I don't know that he feels that.
Bill Landis
Yeah. And I think winning in the NFL is so much about quarterback and, like, is your GM good at building a roster? I think a coach makes more of a difference in college. If you're trying to test, am I better than the other guys? Is this about me? Stay in college. Are the Chiefs, like, about Andy Reid or the Chiefs about Patrick Mahomes? Are the bills about Sean McDermott? Are they about Josh Allen? Like, I don't. What's the. Don't go Marcus. I think Marcus Freeman belongs in college. Like, so that's my pitch to Marcus Freeman.
Doug Lee Maurice
I think he does too. And I don't think Jackson Dart's going to be his Patrick Mahomes.
Bill Landis
So, yeah, I don't know. You make a lot of money in college? I don't know. Don't go to land at Ole Miss. I don't care. Ole Miss is favored by 17 and a half. Saturday at 3:30 they played already and Ole Miss won by a million 45 to 10 on September 20th. There's two things here that I, I just was trying to read some stuff and I will disagree with maybe. I don't know if it's the prevailing narrative, but at least what you can find some places. So one is I am gonna take much, not all. Obviously, Ole Miss has more good players than Tulane, but I believe in getting blitzed. And I don't think 45, 10 is indicative of, like, what this game is like. And so I'm not throwing it away, but I want to make sure, like, if, if you're just like, oh, well, Ole Miss already beat about 35. It's probably ole Miss's best win of the season in terms of, like, beating a good team and winning handily because I said people have pointed out Ole Miss all year is like, kind of played to the level of competition. It's like they beat Washington State by three, but here they took like a. They took care of a G6 team. Right. And the other thing is, I feel like this, the narrative is really spun on the Ole Miss stuff is like, now the players are mad and they're gonna, like, circle the wagons and Pete Golding is gonna lead this group of angry players who have been betrayed by Lane Kiffin, and they're gonna ride that anger into the playoff. And I just think it's a. It's a circus. Your coach left. What are we talking about? How, like the. I. I refuse to believe that's somehow more of a motivator than it is an absolute abject disaster that your coach left and took a bunch of assistants and now some of those assistants, like, came back from LSU to do this. I could already hear after lsu, after Ole Miss loses, people being like, oh, my gosh, this is too much to overcome. Like, this was ridiculous. Their coach left. It's like, yeah, their coach left. So I don't like. And I get if the local media has to write that, because that's great for the Ole Miss fans. Hey, everybody, we're gonna show Lane what the deal is. No, I don't think you are. So I'm taking it as a one off. Jake Red Sloff, the Tulane quarterback, played awful in that first game. He's not going to play like that again. Ole Miss is certainly a better team. From O Index FEI Ole Miss is 14, Tulane's 56, SP + Ole Miss is 7. Tulane is 42. But I think they're a little puffed up. Right? And they're. And they're an offense heavy team whose offensive engine, the offensive engine is Link Kiffin's brain and his brains in Baton Rouge.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. But you don't think Charlie Weiss Jr. Is an extension of him.
Bill Landis
Charlie Weiss Jr. Who's simultaneously shopping for houses in Baton Rouge, but also hopped in his Honda Accord to drive back to Ole Miss to coach this game. I. I don't know. I don't know. It feel. It's weird as all get out. And I feel like, yeah, we've transitioned from this is the weirdest thing ever to it's a rallying cry. And I have not transitioned.
Doug Lee Maurice
I. And the thing I feel like I Don't see a lot of being discussed is like, there have to be some players in Ole Miss's roster that are getting recruited by lsu, right? Like, what are, what, what's their state of mind at the moment? Trinidad Chambliss, the quarterback from Ole Miss, was asked about, like, hey, you're gonna transfer after this year. He's like, I don't know. I got to keep my options open because the head coach left. He's like, you're getting ready to play a playoff game, dude. Like, I get you're playing Tulane, but it's a play playoff game. So I don't know. And I, I do think another part of it, like, rat soft did not play great the first time around. But I also, like, he's, you know, he's played in big games. Like, he played at Utah in the Holy War last year. They played a banger of a game at Arizona State last year when he was at byu. I don't think he's going to show up to Ole Miss and like, look around and like, wondering what he got himself into. I think he'll be ready for the moment. Now he's, he's kind of loosey goosey. He might have a loosey goosey game, but I don't think he's going to be like, emotionally overwhelmed by having to play an SEC team in the playoff game. So I can't get there, though. I'm picking two lane. I'm gonna pick two lane to cover, but okay, not the win. I, I have ole miss 35 to 20.
Bill Landis
35 to 20.
Doug Lee Maurice
Okay.
Bill Landis
I'm 26, 24 two lane. I don't think anybody else in the world is picking two lane, but I, like, I, I, I can. Obviously it's spite. Obviously, it's SEC midness. Obviously it's leading into SEC chaos. Obviously, like, the SEC can cram it, but, like, I can also see it, right, that you've been lulled to sleep by like, whatever the sp plus gap, right? And you've been lulled to sleep by this 45 to 10 thing, when actually the most important thing about this game is that the head coach bailed and you're gonna like. I can hear the announcers making excuses. I feel bad for the Ole Miss players. I can hear them, like, making excuses for the old missed players after they blow a coverage or after, you know, somebody throws a pick or misses, misses a block and pass protection and, and Trinidad Chambers gets strip sacked. And it's like, well, you know, it's really hard when your head Coach. Yes, it's really hard when your head coach leaves.

Let's go. Tis the season of gifting and holes to deck and the who's in Whoville were in love with new tech. Where can we find the Sonos and Samsung and Nintendo? They shouted. Would they find it in one place? This they questioned and doubted when suddenly a who yelled walmart's the place to start. And D2 added headphones, TVs and games to their carts. With Walmart, their shopping was done in a flurry. They cried out who knew? And ordered their gifts in a hurry. Shop the latest tech gifts in the Walmart.
Bill Landis
JMU at Oregon. I have zero analysis on this. It's a 21 1/2 point spread. It's Saturday night at 7:30. This is just like a goofy spot. I think Oregon is live, you know, not. We're not hiding anything. We did like a playoff bracket show already because that's what everybody does. And you got to talk about the bracket but then you also have to still talk about individual games. You and I both have Oregon in the national championship game and I think it starts here. I know the playoff is requiring injury reports three days out and all of the injured Oregon receivers right to Corian Moore, Gary Bryant Jr. Jr. And Evan Stewart. And Evan Stewart who's been out the whole year. They're all questionable. Is that right? I think that's a designation.
Doug Lee Maurice
They are questionable and the designations are available. Probable, questionable, doubtful, so or out. So there are two levels below questionable to the negative that they are not at.
Bill Landis
They're.
Doug Lee Maurice
They're questionable at the moment. So I feel like that's pretty good. Yeah.
Bill Landis
So I don't think we need to overlies a 21 and a half. Overanalyze a 21 and a half point game. Like if they can have one of those three receivers. And I, I think, I think one of the things that we might walk away from this weekend is like people thinking like oh, I think Oregon could win the national title. I, I would not be surprised if that's the sentiment on Sunday morning.
Doug Lee Maurice
So.
Bill Landis
And then Oregon, Texas Tech. I guess we didn't talk about the Ole Miss, Tulane winner is going to play Georgia. Old Miss Georgia is a rematch. Tulane, Georgia is probably frankly a half step more interesting. But then also that's one of those words like the underdog finds a way in one game. And then Kirby Smart's like, okay, you want to lose by 80.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, thanks for the win.
Bill Landis
So I don't know there but like I, we. I would look forward to Oregon, Texas Tech. I'm like, there are some rankings, right, that you, you've pointed this out that JMU is actually like higher ranked in some of these statistical profiles than Tulane is. But this to me is more about being Oregon. Substantially better than Ole Miss.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, like, like significantly higher.
Bill Landis
I think. James.
Doug Lee Maurice
But James Madison in SP plus is 244 and Tulane is 42.
Bill Landis
Yeah.
Doug Lee Maurice
The one thing I was curious about was so Oregon lost to Indiana. Indiana's defense is the defense that was like at jmu. And I wondered if the current defensive coordinator might have been a holdover.
Bill Landis
Right.
Doug Lee Maurice
He was like running a similar system. He's not. He was at Alabama last year and then Bob Chesney, who's leaving to be the UCLA head coach after this, hired him to be the dc. So I don't know, I don't know how much scheme continuity there is from what Indiana was able to do defensively against Oregon to what Oregon or to what James Madison will try to do against Oregon. Not that I think it would matter much, but I was just kind of curious. Okay. I think Oregon is getting healthy and is playing angry and will win here quite comfortably. I have 38, 10, I have 45, 14.
Bill Landis
And this is also the kind of thing where Dan Lanning is not afraid to come out and put it on somebody.
Motivational Sports Announcer
So.
Bill Landis
So I would not be afraid to give the 21 and a half year because I think it is a Ducks statement time potentially to the rest of the college football world and the Texas Tech who would be the matchup of the next round. So those are our four games we will plan. Our plan is to have a live show on Saturday night after the JMU Oregon game. That's a 7:30 Eastern start. So whatever. Around 11ish. Probably Eastern, probably go for about an hour and that's where we'll talk about all four of the first round playoff games. We won't do anything Friday night. We won't do anything like right after the Miami Texas A M game or anything because they're the winners playing Ohio State. But we'll have a discussion about how everything went and like what, what changed our minds what didn't? And I just. Get ready. If I'm right on two lane, you will. It's the biggest victory lap you ever saw. My God. I got.
Doug Lee Maurice
You got picks, Mr. North for the FCS semifinals.
Bill Landis
Montana versus Montana State. Is that the. What do they call it? The big. The Big Bear Paw? What do they call that? They call it something.
Doug Lee Maurice
The Brawl of the Wild.
Bill Landis
The Brawl of the Wild. I do not. That's the other. I know nothing about it. I apologize.
Doug Lee Maurice
They played not that long ago, and I think Montana won, but they were at home. And now this game's at Montana State. The other one is Illinois State and Villanova. Villanova upsetting some folks on its way to the semifinals.
Bill Landis
But Illinois State also kept winning after their big upset because. Did they have another game since the big upset?
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, Nova beat, like, Tarleton State last week. That's a North. That's a North for a South Dub. Illinois. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Illinois State. I forgot you were watching it in the car before the Big Ten title game. Illinois State beat North Dakota State. All right.
Bill Landis
They haven't had a game since then.
Doug Lee Maurice
No, no, they. Then they. Then they won at UC Davis last week.
Bill Landis
Oh, they won at UC Davis. Okay.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, that's the semi. One semifinal is, like, two teams that have been awesome all year, and the other semi finals, like, two teams that are on, like, Cinderella runs.
Bill Landis
Can I just check something with you real quick? Illinois State. What part of the country would you say that's in? North or South?
Doug Lee Maurice
North.
Bill Landis
How about Villanova? I know it's not in Philadelphia, but.
Doug Lee Maurice
What part of the country that is North.
Bill Landis
And. And just I know there might be some people, like, trying to claim Montana for the south, but we wouldn't listen to those people. Right. So Montana. Montana State are both North.
Doug Lee Maurice
North.
Bill Landis
Okay.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, we could. Didn't we have. Last year? Every college football championship was won by a northern team, region of champions.
Bill Landis
I don't know what to tell you. Facts are facts. I'm sorry if it hurts feelings. God, I hope Ole Miss loses. And I wish there would be a way for both Oklahoma and Alabama to lose. But I will be satisfied if the winner looks terrible and looks like red meat for Kurt Signetti and Fernando Mendoza in the next round. That would be enough. So, okay, those are our picks. Thanks, you guys, for checking in. As always, we're continuing with Ohio State position breakdowns. We'll have the live show on Saturday night. And then, like, once we get done with the first round, we are rolling, baby, into the quarterfinals. So thanks for hanging with us for now. He's Bill Landis. I'm Doug Lee Maurice. And that was the Bill and Doug Show.

Episode: College Football Playoff Picks: Miami-Texas A&M, plus an Alabama-Oklahoma mid-off, and an upset pick
Date: December 18, 2025
Hosts: Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis
This episode offers an in-depth and opinionated preview of the College Football Playoff’s first-round matchups, featuring discussion, picks, and spirited debate around Miami vs. Texas A&M, the Alabama-Oklahoma "mid-off," juicy upset potential (Tulane-Ole Miss!), and the role of "mid" SEC teams hosting playoff games. Bill and Doug use their signature humor and big-picture perspective to dissect games while amplifying northern teams and poking at southern CFB bias. The episode also features a candid aside on coaching career choices and a glance at the FCS playoffs.
"We are not going to give you the best breakdown in the country for Alabama, Oklahoma, but we'll give you a pick." (01:14, Bill)
"Making the playoff is a reward… I don't think that every playoff should demand to be filled only with teams who can win the championship." (02:23, Bill)
"If you get good John Matier, that matters, right?" (04:48, Bill)
"Often does well when he's got extra time to prepare." (08:26, Doug)
Memorable Quote:
"If you're going to complain about James Madison and Tulane not being national title contenders, neither are Bama and Oklahoma. Neither of these teams is winning the national title." (10:06, Bill)
"Basically the entire top ten scoring defenses are in the playoff… Texas A&M is 41st." (12:48, Doug)
"These are like two of the three best teams in the first round, and they're playing each other." (15:04, Bill)
"I don't really know how much A&M has been tested this year, to be honest." (18:17, Doug)
"I refuse to believe that's somehow more of a motivator than it is an absolute abject disaster that your coach left and took a bunch of assistants..." (22:48, Bill)
"I don't think anybody else in the world is picking Tulane, but obviously it's spite… I can also see it." (25:15, Bill)
"This is also the kind of thing where Dan Lanning is not afraid to come out and put it on somebody." (30:31, Bill)
"NFL coaches are so disposable... but college coaches become legends." (19:17, Bill)
"Facts are facts. I'm sorry if it hurts feelings. God, I hope Ole Miss loses." (33:09, Bill)

On playoff inclusion:
"I think it's maybe even better than fine. I think it's cool and it's part of what this playoff... should be." (02:23, Bill)
On Alabama-Oklahoma:
"Neither of these teams is winning the national title." (10:06, Bill)
On Ole Miss chaos:
"The offensive engine is Lane Kiffin's brain and his brain's in Baton Rouge." (23:24, Bill)

Bill channeling pro-North bias:
"Facts are facts. I'm sorry if it hurts feelings. God, I hope Ole Miss loses." (33:09, Bill)
Bill and Doug blend sharp stats, regional pride, and a wry, conversational style. They’re unabashed about their "northern" bias and readiness to see the SEC’s middle class taken down a peg, while also presenting nuanced analysis—with plenty of self-aware asides riffing on the unpredictable nature of college football.
