Welcome back to around the Shoe on the Bill and Doug show where we talk with great Ohio State writers and reporters from around the beat about what's going on with the Buckeyes. I'm Doug Lay. Maurice from the Bill and Doug Show. Bill Landis, as always here from the Bill and Doug Show. Landis, two great guests. We always say there's great guests, but this week we actually mean it.
C
This, this week.
B
Right.
D
I would say, you know, no offense to our previous guests, these are legendary guests on the Ohio State Fair.
B
To say, first up, Dave Biddle from Buck Nuts. Dave, how long have you been covering the Buckeyes?
E
Since 2002 and then since 2004 full time? Because in 2002 I was working full time at a newspaper that no longer exists as sports editor here in central Ohio called the Madison Press. So that was my full time job and I did Buck Nuts part time. So 2002, they won the national championship that year. And then in 2004 I left the Madison Press and went to Bucknuts full time. So that's how you want to look at it. I like to say 2002, but yeah, 2002, so a couple years I was like a stringer part time. And then since 2004 I've been full time.
B
Off to a roaring start with our first reference to working for a newspaper that no longer exists, which is just, we're just all in our feelings about journalism these days. Dave Biddle, thank you so much for being here. And your name, sir is Tim, is that correct?
C
Tim A Y. Yeah.
B
Tim of the Tim May Show. How long is the Tim May show existed?
C
It's, it's existed for quite a while now. You know, I was with Letter Monroe and which got merged with on three or whatever happened there. And then I was going to be done with doing this kind of stuff at the end of the season last year because I was. How's better to go out than a season like that? And yeah, bottom line is I stuck around. And now I'm with the fanstreamsports.com the. The Tim May show featuring Clay hall, by the way. And, and then of course, Dave and I ever, for two hours every Saturday, we do the Tailgate show with Anthony Rothman on 97.1 the Fan. And I get to be on there quite a bit off and on guest spots or co hosting. So I'm enjoying myself. But I've been covering Ohio states full time since 1984 and before that did help cover games, you know, back in the late 70s, early 80s. So that's what, 42 seasons watching Ohio State football now.
B
And to be fair, those of us who have been privileged enough to know Tim May over the years, even when you worked for the Dispatch, Tim, it really was the Tim May Show. Right?
C
Yeah.
B
Hey, here's one.
C
Here's one thing. I only give myself credit for one thing, and that was I understood there was more to covering a team and for, for getting out there, getting your whatever you want to call your message. Maybe that's the wrong term, but I, I embrace radio and television every chance to get even. Even though I have a face for a face for radio and a voice for newspapers, I still embraced being on with my buddies, Dom to Barry and Paul Spawn, you know, at Channel 10 from the early 90s on. And just because I just enjoy talking about stuff, I don't. I didn't so much enjoy writing as much as I just enjoyed shooting the bull about college football. So, yeah, I will, I will plead guilty if in fact there were. There were charges brought.
B
I, I have been on many Tim May podcasts that were just unrecorded, standing in a parking lot.
C
Yes.
B
Like, well, this is a podcast. It's just nobody else is listening to it. Right.
C
We should have recorded those. Yeah.
B
Yes, I know. Someday. Tim, thank you for being here. Thanks to all you guys for being here. We do this every Monday around the shoe. Five topics about Ohio State football. Dave Biddle, Our first question for you on around the Shoe what is like going into this week, this Ohio State road trip to Washington on Saturday for a 3:30 Eastern time kick? Like, what is the number one concern as you think about this game? Washington's three and oh, they're pretty good. It's a long ways away. What does Ohio State have to watch out for?
E
Yeah, I was going to try and be like exotic, come up with something maybe a little bit like out of left field here. I'm going to be boring. I, I think it's containing Demon Williams. I was going to go with the runner up. It'd be Ohio State's red zone offense. But I think Demon Williams as they, you know, Matt Patricia compared him to Kyler Murray. So did Ryan Day. I had a former Ohio State player a couple weeks ago say, hey, this Washington quarterback reminds me of Antoine Randall L when he was in Indiana, but a better passing version of that. So they've got a very talented quarterback and that's going to be a test. But this Ohio State defense is fantastic. So I will go with containing Demond Williams. And then silver medal goes to Ohio State's red zone offense. They've got to find a way to be efficient in the red zone. And short yardage. It reminds me a lot of two years ago, small sample size, but it reminds me a lot of two years.
B
Ago that red zone stuff. It's like you don't, you don't want to overdo it, Dave. But also we've seen it crop up at certain moments. I think every Ohio State fan goes back to like that 2019 Clemson semifinal and that offense was actually really good in the red zone. But like if you have trouble there at the wrong time against a decent team. Right. It's something that you've got to be thinking about, Dave.
E
No doubt about it. You look ahead to Michigan. Michigan's a little better than what I thought they'd be. I knew they'd be good this year. I knew they'd be better than last year. They're even better than I think they can run the ball really, really well. It might not be the best Michigan offensive line we've seen, but it's still a Michigan offensive line. Justice Haynes was a great get in the portal. Underwood, you know, it's hot and cold as a passer, but he can run the ball. He looks poised in their defense. To no surprise, they are hard hitting and they are a good tackling defense. So this is going to be a good Michigan team. And that's a game where you better. If you get in the red zone in Ann Arbor, you better score touchdowns. I'm getting way ahead of myself. I know, but as we were to do. But yeah, I think because last year they were so good in the red zone as short yardage. Was it just because of the quarterback run? No, but Will Howard scored seven rushing touchdowns. He picked up several first downs with on third down and fourth down with his legs. And it made the defense have to account for the cube run. So we'll see what happens.
B
Can you imagine if I had a buzzer that was like. No talking about Ohio State Michigan in September?
D
That buzzer wasn't existing.
B
There's, there's, there's no buzzer that exists. This. I have a buzzer that says you're allowed to talk Ohio State, Michigan, 365 days a year.
C
You can say. Doug, you can say that Dave is way out over his skis on this one. Go ahead now, see.
B
Do you want to host Tim? Let's let Tim come on guess Host, right? That's what we all want.
E
It's always the Tim May Show.
B
Every, every day is a Tim a show.
E
Right?
B
Tim, what do you. What do you got for what's Ohio State needs to be on the lookout for Saturday.
C
Kind of a ditto thing. But the main thing, you know, the red zone offense. When you really look back and even while the game was going on, Julian saying was just a little bit offbeat, you know, on some real opportunities to throw the ball in the red zone that we wouldn't even be sitting here talking about it. But the bottom line is, you know, you think about Ohio State's first touchdown this year. 4. Four tight ends on the field, three of them up on the line, the two on the left side. And then you got a foot fullback, quasi tight end fullback leading the way for C.J. donaldson over left tackle. Boom. Red zone. Are you kidding me? That was an emphatic exclamation point that Brian Day and the people put on everybody. Of course. Grambling. Were they ever even? I don't even. I don't remember being in Ohio State being in the red zone, you know, but I'm sure there was a red zone touchdown in there somewhere. But yeah, I mean things can crop up just out of nowhere. I thought Ohio University did a great job of dirtying, of dirtying the backfield a little, dirtying the pocket a little bit, but also getting penetration. They had one guy that was quite effective about getting penetration. So you got to plug those leaks a little bit from a red zone. But there were the, the, the red zone approach by Ohio State against Ohio U was sort of incongruous in my point, from my point of view. Line up and shove it down their throat. I don't think Ohio State really tried to do that like I thought they would in that game. And then all of a sudden you're throwing on third down and you're half beat late on Jeremiah Smith getting open in the right corner and you know he doesn't get a touchdown. You don't see a guy wide open right off the bat on another play which would have been a touchdown if you just throw the ball. So those are little first year starting quarterback learned the hard way. With that said, they still won the game by 28 points. But yeah, that's just nitpicky. I think this defense is playing extremely well. They contain for the most part a dual threat quarterback in Parker Navarro. Just Ohio U. But this is taking it up three notches. The guy they're running into Saturday. So containing that quarterback is, is, is going to be mission one for the defense.
B
Landis, what do you think?
D
Yeah, I mean I definitely agree with both these guys. I will say I was looking at the red zone stats. Washington's defense has allowed six touchdowns on eight trips. So may an opportunity for Ohio State's red zone offense to kind of get back into shape for the sake of saying something different. I guess I would say I'm thinking about like last year's Oregon game, right? They go to Austin Stadium, a really tough place to play, but they're experienced at quarterback, they're experienced at center and their experience at offensive play caller. And now they're going to play out in Seattle, which is as difficult, perhaps more difficult of a place to play if you just go by pure noise. They are inexperienced a quarterback, they are inexperienced to play caller and they are somewhat experienced at center. Although I don't know how many environments like this Carson Hinsman has played in. That's the starting center. So like I am interested in sort of like the entire mechanism of all of that right. They're going to have to go silent count in this game. Now if they get up and take the crowd out of it, they won't have to do it for the entire game, but they'll have to do it at the start. How is Brian Hartline getting the plays into Julian saying when it's as loud as it's going to be, how is Julian saying. Communicating with the offensive line? How was Carson Hinsman communicating to his guys up front? Because even if you expand it further along the offensive line in that game at Oregon last year they were really only inexperienced at one spot. It was right guard. Everyone else had played a lot. This is a very different situation for Ohio State's offense going into an environment like this. I don't think Washington is as good as that Oregon team. But the, the complications of playing in that environment remain the same. And this will be a lot of first time experiences for some pretty important people in Ohio State's offense.
C
Yeah, Ohio State was only inexperienced on the offensive line going into that game. But, but all of a sudden they were inexperienced at left tackle as that game ensued. And you know, the thing about his money is, has played at Wisconsin and he has played at, at Michigan back when he was a starter way back when, before whatever that was last year. His. Not sabbatical year, his doghouse year. But, but yeah, I, and, and he did play, he did play at Penn State, but not at center. Right. Do I have that right? Yeah. So, but I'm with you, Bill.
E
Game and at. Against Texas. Yeah, so yeah, I mean, here's the thing. I think what helps Ohio State a little bit compared to Oregon is it's not a night game. Yeah, I think that helps a lot because that, that environment last year, Oregon was crazy. Now Husky Stadium, to Bill's point. Bill's absolutely right. Husky Stadium is a tough place to play. I know we're going to get to the 2007 game later. It wasn't then because Ohio State took them out of the, out of the mix early. But go back to 86 when Ohio State went there. Go back to 94. Look at many, many games at Husky Stadium. That's a tough place to play. Cool venue, tough place to play. But I think it does mitigate the concern for Ohio State that it's not a night game a little bit.
B
I, I do think. I, my answer is, is a little bit more of that intangible thing because I, I do remain not intrigued anymore, but still interested in the west coast, Midwest, part of this giant ocean to Ocean Conference. Now it was such a discussion point last year, especially with the west coast teams coming east. But like, so last year Ohio State had to go out west, but it was for Oregon, it was at night. It was the number one team in the country. Of course, that was an as difficult an environment as you're going to find, but they're definitively up for that game. Right. They have a lot of guys who have been through it, but haven't been the guy through it. Right. So to go to the west coast, the travel, it'll be, you know, like basically a noon start out there, a 3:30 body clock game at a place that does have a home field advantage. I'm a little bit curious about could there be a slow start? Could they just be off their game a little bit? And then you combine that with a Washington offense that has scored on all but three of its drives this year. They have two punts, which is the fewest punts in the nation, and they've turned it over once they have scored. They've scored 23 touchdowns and two field goals as a team. So I think Washington is an offense that can put offensive pressure on Ohio State. And if on this road trip they're kind of not themselves right away, I think they could get behind the eight ball a little bit.
C
Dave.
B
Like that's like, it's kind of a combination of, you know, it's, it's 2, 2500 miles away and I think Washington could score. I, I just wonder what happens if they're down 10, nothing early in the second quarter kind of thing.
E
Yeah, that's what Ohio State needs to hope because if Washington, if this is a close game, that place is going to be going nuts. I mean, that they were what, national champions in the 90s at one point they, this was, this is a very proud program and this is a watershed moment for them. If they can beat the number one Buckeyes, I mean, it's just going to launch them. So, and they know that and, and we know that point spreads at nine and a half. I don't think anybody expected that coming into the season it would be that low. Yeah, this is going to be an interesting game. If Ohio State allows them or Washington, I should say Ohio State allows them. If Washington stays in this game. I mean, that's, they're gonna, their belief factor is just gonna rise and rise and rise. I, I do think they're very, they're very good offensively. I wonder about Washington's defense. I wonder about their level of competition. So far. But this will be a difficult game for Ohio State. No doubt in my mind.

Yeah.
B
All right, let's get to the quarterback Tim. We got it. I want to go ahead and nickname.
C
Yeah.
B
This is for you Landis. Right. We did it. We're doing a nickname question. That's ain't Tim May. Is it not? You better bring it Tim. I. I know you're going to our second question. What's your best nickname for Julian? Saying based. Based on how he's played and what you think's ahead for him.
C
I've been using it since they. Since they first got him and it's my nickname for him is just. Just saying. I mean. Oh, that's all you need to know. This guy. I remember I told his. I had his. I've had his high school coach on a couple times on the Tim May show. Just telling me. Yeah, yeah. We never heard that before but I just like just saying this guy can play, man. Just saying look out. He's going to get better than he is now. And he's already pretty damn good. Just saying he's as accurate a quarterback as I've covered at Ohio State. Right out of the chute and just saying his release is par. Excellent. Right up there with Dwayne Haskins Jr. Coming from the ear and right on. You know like a. Like that. As I keep recording like that dark guy you run into at a bar who all of a sudden when he gets serious he. He pulls his own little case out with his own set of darts. You know he. I mean I. I'm just saying this guy's really good.
B
Have you said that to Julian? Have you called him just to his thing.
C
I've hardly ever, you know, I don't know. I don't know who. I don't know if you get private audiences with him but I've had hardly had any kind of Private time with just saying. But that, that, that time will come. I just, I. I really like this. I really like this quarterback, man. I just, I like Lincoln keynotes too, for that matter, but for. For different reasons. Yeah, but this guy's special. And I think barring injury, whatever, you're just going to see him get better and better and he understands what he's got. Remember I told him at one of the press offerings or press chances we had with him. What I'm impressed by is a guy that understands. Now we can. You can design plays for the tight end to be open and catch the ball and whatever, but he knows the tight end is his friend. It's clear from the way he's played that he's. He's like year or two ahead of a lot of other young quarterbacks who think, you know, the default button is Jeremiah Smith or Carnell Tate and or Brandon Ennis who you touched on a while ago or dumped it off to the running back out in the flat. He understands the tight end. The tight end and the role, the always open in college football, tight end can play for both the team and for himself.
B
Yeah, that's interesting. We talked a lot about the tight end this year. Maybe it's because there's a quarterback there who knows how to use them. Landis, you got a name for Julian Saying?
D
Yeah, I think there's a few different ways you could go. I was. So you guys know who. JT O', Sullivan, the QB school YouTube channel. He's based in Southern California. He says he's watched Julian Saying play a bunch in high school. And he calls him like, he just says he's a human Jugs machine. So you could go that route. You can call him Jug. You can call him Jug Saying. You could call him Julian Jugs if you wanted to.
C
Yeah, it sure does.
D
Yeah, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna lean into those California vibes. I actually don't know if Julian's a surfer, but I'm going to assume he is based off where he's from and his hairstyle. You guys know the Shaka? The Shaka hand signal, like surfers do. Yeah. He's shock us saying, oh, saying, yeah, that's right. Yeah, yeah.
B
Okay. Now I feel bad about my number.
E
10 is hanging 10.
D
Oh, there you go.
B
Oh, he's hanging 10. Yes, that's good. Okay. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. No, there'll be like a surfboard, little surfboard meme on the video screen.
E
Now he's gonna tell us. I never surfer. Look at where he's from.
C
Yeah, yeah. Hey, but hanging pin, the way. The way with his release, man, he's always pressing forward. I like that.
B
Can you imagine, like, instead of a shrug, could we get him doing this running down the field next time he throws a touchdown pass.
C
We offered him a lot of money. Maybe.
E
I think it's going to happen for sure.
C
Yeah.
E
We're going to see Ohio State fans wearing, like, pencils in their hats before long. Yes, Patricia. And then like, with.
C
Just on defense. Just when they're on defense.
E
Just when they're on offense.
C
Yeah, yeah.
B
All right. I was gonna say. I was gonna say smooth saying. Because it starts with an S. Yeah, sure. Like smooth sailing, but it's smooth saying he is a little hard. I'll be curious to see how his personality develops as he continues to talk to us, which is the way he talks to the fans. Like, it.
C
It.
B
In a different way, but like, it took Braxton Miller a little while to like, sort of come out and. And it took Justin Field a little while to sort of. Haskins was ready from the jump of like, Dwayne Haskins is going to tell.
C
You what's going on.
B
And like, you always kind of like, CJ's Stroud was like, so cerebral. You kind of always had a. Had a handle on CJ that he was thinking about stuff, but then he'd hear stuff and he'd kind of be mad about the naysayers and then his brain would be a computer. But, like, I don't. I don't know that I have a handle on completely who Julian sand is as a person, which. The more touchdown passes he throws, the more we'll figure out. So I'm gonna go smooth. We got Phyllis.
C
We got spoiled. We got spoiled by Will Howard last year. Yeah. Most talking quarterback I've ever covered. Yeah.
E
He'd even finished the press conference. Go Bucks. He was like a coach.
B
Yeah.
D
Yeah.
E
All right. I really wanted to do something playing on the Saiyan name. You guys did a good job with that. I couldn't think of anything good there. I also was thinking about something with Timothy Chalamet. He reminds me he looks a lot like. But I. Because I love that movie with the Timmy. Timothy Chalamet playing Bob Dylan. Like a rolling stone.
C
Go ahead, Tim. No, I. I was the first one to say that in the media that I think I was talking.
E
You wouldn't even know.
C
And I go, he, look. I mean, he has that. I'm not saying he looks dead ringer like Timothy Chalamet, but He looks a lot like him with his hairstyle etc. And number two, he's kind of cool like Timothy Chalamet. Exactly. I'm not sure we're ever gonna get a cool guy out of his, out of his element. You know what I mean? It just stuff to us.
E
What Bob villain might be one of the coolest cats ever walked this planet but I couldn't think maybe Tambourine Man. No, he remain reminds me a lot of Joe Germain but better, you know, better version of Joe. Just the way he, Joe Jermaine threw such a pretty football. Oh my goodness saying's better than that. So here's what I did. I went boring guys, speaking of where he's from, I want Carl's bad kid. The Carl's bad kid.
B
Oh, let's go. No, I like that because that's a little.
E
I think I'm in fourth place here.
C
But no, no, that's good.
B
He's got a little kid to him, right? Because it's like he kind of looks young but also like kids like it's like, you know, it's like a little swagger with the kid. The Carl's bad kid. No, don't sell yourself short there. I will say I did not have Timothy Chalamet argument on around the shoe today. I didn't think we were going to be heading down that path but here. Oh yeah, yeah.
C
And I like Carl's bad kid because he's a sharpshooter. You know what I mean? When you think there you go girls bed kid. It goes past, just it goes past. He's got something hang, you know right here. He's got a couple of six guns. Whatever I like.
B
I'll tell you Biddle, if you go up to Julian and say would you rather we call you the Carl's bad kid or Julian Jugs? I think he's gonna go with the.
E
Carl's bad kid first question on Wednesday, right?
D
Yeah.
C
And by the way how do you know he doesn't want to go by Julian Monarch?
B
But go ahead Bill and his question 3 and we're going to use kind of your stat Bill on this. We're just trying, we're trying to get a handle on like how big of a game is this? Is there a word or a phrase that you would use to describe this test for Ohio State? Because Bill, you look this up, this like a single digit line as, as Dave referenced earlier in a Big ten game for Ohio State that's not against a traditional blue blood. Right. This is kind of interesting territory. Is it not.
D
Yeah. So I looked at the la the last 10 years, non Michigan or Penn State games, single digit lines, regular season, Big Ten games. This is only the third time. So last year against Oregon, I, I Forgot this But 2018 against Michigan State was a 3 1/2 point line for some reason. And now and, and this one which actually I was looking at it like this morning on FanDuel it's down to eight and a half. So I'll be interested to see how that moves throughout the rest of this week. I, I, you know, I, the word that came to mind for me was, was sort of like tricky. But that might not even do it justice because I do think Washington like tricky to me is like going to Purdue, right? Like I think that Washington, this Washington team is, is better than a lot of those like Purdue teams that have been thorns in the side of Ohio State in the past. So maybe I would just like steal, steal Urban Meyer lingo and say like real one.
B
Right.
D
Like this to me feels like Ohio State is going into a game that I think it can lose if it doesn't play well. Right. And that doesn't happen a ton throughout Ohio State season unless it's playing a major non conference game or it's playing Michigan basically because even the Penn State games you might think that, but Ohio State usually wins that game. I think the combination of where it is, the environment, some of the inexperience that Ohio State has on the offensive side and some of the nuances of Washington's offense that are, that are pretty like college like that. I'm remain curious about Matt Patricia's not so much ability to do it because I think he can do it but just like how he chooses to adapt to it to mold his defense, you know, against the quarterback who's going to run the way that The Mon Williams Jr. Is going to run in this game. Both scrambles and designed quarterback run. I think Ohio State has, has weapons to deal with that. Chief among them Arvel Reese. But it's not going to be easy. And there's a, there's a real guy at quarterback for Washington, there's a real guy at receiver for Washington and there's a real guy at running back and that can get you a long way like 1 through 85. Ohio State of course is better. I agree with Dave about Washington's defense. Like I, you know, especially considering who Washington has played. You look at some of the numbers and some of the stuff you've given up and you kind of raise an eyebrow and think like how good is this team really? And I think that's fair. But the single digit spread really jumps out at you. So I think Ohio State is in for an absolute real test on Saturday, playing against Washington.

B
Yeah, I, I would, I think I might use the phrase like the new reality of the Big Ten. And we, we talked a lot in the preseason about, we think that the middle tier of the Big Ten is probably larger and maybe better than it's ever been in my 20 years of doing this that you, you saw Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon at the top. But then there were real teams like with real quarterbacks, with real coaches in that next tier. And that just has not been the case with Ohio State. Now, now the hard thing about this is I think for instance, if you're trying to tell us to Ohio State fans it's like, oh, you mean like Indiana last year, Like Indiana who made the playoff and it's like, oh, Indiana's coming into Ohio State. I mean the Ohio State blows their doors off and makes them look like every other like decent against other teams, but can't hang with Ohio State opponent that we've seen a million times. And I would understand if there's maybe a little bit of that with Ohio State fans right now. But I just think the fact that it's on the road, I do think in terms of like natural talent, Damon Williams Jr. As Dave started the show with, is a step ahead of somebody like Indiana's quarterback last year with Curtis Rourke. Like, it's just, it's just a different situation that the depth of skill positions that Bill talked about. And this is one of those things where I like that the Big Ten is better. And you know, Dave and Tim, I'm sure there was that stretch when Trestle was doing his thing where Jim Trestle and Ohio State were awesome. But also it was like, my God, it's like eight walkovers a year. So I think it's fun when your conference is better, but when your conference is better, one of the things that happens is maybe your best teams lose every now and then instead of steamrolling everybody. And I wonder if a game like this is a little bit of a beginning of a new reality, that this is just part of it, that Ohio State going into a Big Ten season, it's not just Oregon that maybe they could lose to. It's not just the Michigan game that you have to point at. There's other real teams along the way. So I wonder if it's the start of something, but also like, get back to me if Ohio State wins 45 to 2 and then it'll be like, oh, Doug, oh, are we on alert now? Is it now that it's a new reality, it's like, no, it's not. But then all of a sudden maybe it could be.
C
But then all of a sudden we're expecting a dog fight over at Bloomington on Saturday night. And that was a beat down like it's never happened in Indiana history against a team that was supposed to be a form, a good opponent, former bowl opponent. So I mean you never, the point is you never know what's going to happen these days in college football. And there were a lot of spreads that were totally wrong over the weekend. For example. And like a BetOnline AG yesterday had Ohio State opening at 11.5 favorite what I saw and I even tweeted it and now it's down to what, eight or whatever y' all said a minute ago? That's just all, that's just all based on action going on one way or the other and stuff. People jumping in there while the jumping is good right from a line standpoint. But, but, but, but, but you're exactly right. This is, this is by no means a walk in, get your W and walk out and pardon the punishment, but get your W and walk out. This is a big time game. I've covered what, three Ohio State games in Washington over, over my span, what, 86, 94 and 07. And that's never an easy place to play, even if you get the lead. And, and boy, if you're not on the beam, you can get your butt kicked, which Ohio State has found out two of those three times. So yeah, I think this is a new reality, may be the best way of putting it. I, I agree that the Big Ten is so much thicker in the middle than it's ever been in my opinion of teams that if you don't look out can beat you and. But I count Indiana. Y' all may not, but I'm legit counting Indiana in that up.
B
Yeah, yeah, we all like Kurt Signetti. Get in line.
C
I'm just talking about what he's done. How about the player he's brought in? I've been saying all for. For. For nine months now. They've gotten an upgrade at quarterback and they. And the only two teams they lost to last year played for the national championship, but they've got an upgrade at quarterback. They're really good on defense and offensively, you know, do I, do I still expect Ohio State to be able to handle them? Yeah, absolutely. I do. I do because I still think Ohio State's better. But one little slip, one little. You're at 90% instead of 95%. You know how Steak can get beat by anybody, by a lot of these teams.
E
I've got a hot take. I think Mendoza from Indiana, he's 6, 5, 2, 20. I won't be surprised if he's like the number one quarterback taken in this draft. Nobody had him. He might not. I think he has another year of eligibility if he wants to. But like, I won't be surprised at all if he's the number one quarterback taken.
B
Very. He's. He's settled in very nicely and he's got real receivers and a real dude, a coach.
C
I like saying Fernando, Fernando whenever I talk to Fernando Alonso. He likes that.
B
See, now, I thought you were going back to the Justin saying thing. The. The Julian saying thing again, because you said I like saying Fernando. So now that could be both Julian could be saying Fernando and Fernando. Mendoza's nickname could be saying Fernando.
C
I'm a David Letterman kind of guy. I work. I work, whatever. I got into the ground and I like using saying as often as I can.
B
Tim is going to jump onto a Velcro wall before the end of this show. Dave Biddle, how would you describe this.
E
Game when you texted us, like, the questions ahead of time? I. The first word that popped in my mind for some reason was relatively. This is a relatively tough game, relatively based on preseason expectations. Now, I thought Washington might have been like, they weren't even. I don't even think they're still ranked. I thought Washington and Oklahoma are like the most underrated teams entering the season. Oklahoma showed that what they're doing. I still think Washington is certainly a top 25 team because of the aforementioned defense. I don't think that they're a threat. They're a good team. So I went with relatively as my word, relatively tough compared to Michigan. You know, I don't think it's going to be as tough as Michigan, so. Relatively tough. This is a tough game, relatively speaking.
C
Yeah.
B
All right, Tim, you got a word or phrase?
C
I like that because, you know John Cooper's line. It ain't how good you are, it's how good you are compared to who you play. And yeah, I think Washington is a good football team. So what am I looking up? What am I coming up with a word or phrase to describe this game?
B
Phrase like this game. Just like trying to figure out the context of how. How interesting or bigger tough this game is.
C
Yeah, I think it's a tough call because I. Because it's going to. It's going to amount to what you just brought up a while ago. When a high state comes off the plane and then gets off the bus at the stadium, are they going in basically the way they walked into the Texas game or even the Grambling game, you know, and. And we'd say even though how you game, because iu, they still scored. Well, how many. How many times they score? What, three, four touchdowns and three field goals. Do I have that right? Did I do the math right?
E
Four field goals, Maybe.
C
I can't remember. Right. They still scored seven times, you know, and just like we talked about. About. About. But you've got to. You've got to walk in there thinking, no, no matter how good you think your defense is, they haven't played a guy like this quarterback yet. So that's going to take a little. Whatever. So it's. You've got to walk in there thinking, you got to be on your game. So maybe own your game is the best way of putting it. I don't know.
D
Okay.
C
I haven't thought about themes for coming out onto the field with the smoke blowing the bye week.
B
Yeah, we'll get a theme. All right. Question number four. The addition of the four west coast teams to the Big Ten has been blank or was blank at the time. Like, what we think of this. I'm gonna go first. I'm gonna say refreshing because I do think where we are right now. I know logistically there's a lot of things that are a pain in the butt. But you think about what Oregon's been. You think about this game that we're spending this half hour talking about and that it, like, we're kind of fired up to, like, see what's going on. There's good players on the other team. It's A cool place to play and then let the USC has become a real storyline this year. I do think it would have been maybe a dangerous spot with what the SEC was doing if the Big Ten didn't refresh in this way. And like no offense, but I don't think the Rutgers and Maryland refresh from a football standpoint quite hit the same way. Yes, you can go see the Washington Monument. Yes, you go see a Broadway show. But like talking ball. I don't know. Like we don't talk about this the same way when we're getting ready for Ohio State to play Maryland to Rutgers. So to have Washington plus USC and Oregon just for the ball talk. Dave, like I'm, I'm glad we're in this spot and I think it was a good refresh for the league. What do you think about these four editions?
C
Yeah.
E
So my phrase would be strange but exciting. Okay, it's strange. It's especially growing up in Ohio. I've known about Ohio State football, followed Ohio State football for as long as I can remember. Just growing up in a house with parents that went to Ohio State. So, you know, so part of me is like, man, Penn State still feels kind of new to the league. I'm joking.
C
Yeah.
E
No, but for years, I mean they were the 11th theme. They had that cool emblem that came out Big Ten with the 11 built in like whenever that was in 93, that first game they played in the snow with Raymond Harris, the quiet storm in 1993. And then Penn State beats him, what, 63, 14 the next year in. In Happy Valley. But yeah, man. So I know a lot of people are like, this is crazy to have like these west coast teams. I like it, I like it. It's strange, but exciting. And profitable.
B
And profitable. Oh yeah, we gotta throw that money in. Tim. Tim, what do you think?
C
I. I like it. I thought was the first thing I thought of is the opposite what other people thought everybody was going. What about how State having to go to Washington? That's the way these people talk. What about state after going to Washington or I state having to fly to Oregon, whatever I go. Do you understand that those teams are going to have to take. Well, they play a nine game conference schedule, so not five times out of five times every other year they're going to be coming east except when they're playing at each other's place. And by the way, it's a long way from Southern Cal to Washington. So everybody's worried about the travel and everything. I don't worry about the travel. For football teams at all. Because, you know, it's one time a year, every other year for some. Yeah.
E
They don't have layovers in airports and stuff. They're flying charter.
C
They're.
E
Okay.
C
That is correct. And they're, you know, so they're not going through TSA Checkpoint Charlie. Well, maybe they are, but not the same one we go through. But. So. But I thought, from a football standpoint, I thought was a home run, because you're getting Southern Cal with this rich, ridiculous history of national championships and being relevant, and you're getting Washington with its rich football history and being national champion. And then you got Oregon, the biggest upstart there's been in the last 20 years in college football. And, oh, yes, USC's little brother, UCLA. You know, there are. There's always baggage. There's always baggage. UCLA is the baggage in this. But from a basketball standpoint, UCLA at least has that tradition. So as much as it didn't make sense when Cal and Stanford joined the acc, it makes hellacious sense now. Right. I mean, it's a totally different world we're living in. I keep, you know, thinking about those Miami to. Miami to. To Bay Area road trips in the accurate game. So. Yeah. So I don't have a. I really. I really like it because the only thing I have a problem with occasionally, I don't know about you guys, because I am 71 years old, y'.
B
All.
C
Y' all are half that age, you guys. But occasionally, when I look at the top 20 or something or matchups, I forget, oh, wait, that's right. USC's in the Big Ten now.
B
Yeah.
C
You know what I mean? When I'm figuring out, okay, the SEC's got this many guys in it. How many? And then I forget Texas and Oklahoma for the SEC sometimes. So. But I like it. I mean, it's the. It's the. It's new college football. And the bottom line is it's all about putting fannies in seats and putting people in front of. And putting fannies in front of televisions to watch games so that the green keeps rolling in. And that's what it is all about now. And I think it's. It's pretty stout. It's too bad that the Big Ten missed the opportunity probably, to get Texas.
B
Yeah, they missed it. Texas didn't make it that way.
C
Texas now would be a. Would be a Pony Express Depot on the way to la. You know what I mean? So it makes sense.
B
Iowa be fine.
C
Yeah.
B
And just what's your word or phrase here?
D
I think similar to Dave, it's like weird but worth it kind of thing. Like I do, I do think it's been mostly additive. Right. And the thing I like about adding those four teams is that it kind of enhances. You think about the Big Ten is sort of like in three tiers. It kind of enhances all three tiers. Right. Like Oregon's at the top. Washington and USC certainly have the ability to get to the top. But even if they're not, their floor is like dead middle on the Big Ten and they will make the middle of the Big Ten much better than it has been. And then like UCLA stinks. But at least when you play a bad Big Ten team, we get to go to the Rose bowl. Right? That's kind of cool. So I guess that that's a one perk of ucl, UCLA being in the league. I do think it's weird. I. I've always thought it was weird that it was not just a football move. Like I think they could have just made it. These teams come play football and everything else stays the same for the other sports. But I understand why that wasn't the case. So I like it. I like that there's new teams, new places to play, especially Oregon. Washington and USC I think are going to be pretty good more often than not. And it definitely changes kind of the temperature of the Big Ten in a good way.
A

All right, last question. It's been referenced a couple times. Ohio State's last trip to Washington State. 9-15-2007. A 3314 win for the Buckeyes. Dave Biddle, what do you remember about 9-15-2007?
E
It was my one and still only trip to the Pacific Northwest. I did not make the trip to Oregon last year. And I remember. Guys, correct me if I'm wrong here, you guys will remember this. I think so. Brandon Stain scored a touchdown like the last play of the game, a running touch like Tress is just trying to run the clock out. Brandon saying bounces it outside. I think I have this right. And scores like, you know, 40, 50 yard touchdown, whatever it was to make it 337 instead of 26 7. I think I remember this right. I remember Trestle beginning the postgame press conference there at Husky Stadium before taking any questions, apologizing to Ty Willingham and Washington for Ohio State scoring a touchdown on the last play. Wasn't like he's throwing it, you know, Brandon saying just scored a touch. So they're trying to run the clock out. So what I remember the most, Doug, is Jim Trestle apologizing for scoring a touchdown on the last play.
B
That, that I think is right.
E
I think that's right.
B
That encapsulates everything you need to know about that era of Ohio State football. Right.
C
I would need that.
E
Be at fat. I need a fact checker on that. But I, I'm pretty sure I have that right.
B
I have a terrible memory. But you're, you're jogging it here, Bill. I think you're onto it and it, it sounds like something that would happen. Tim, what do you remember about that game, that trip?
C
By the way, Ryan Day did not apologize for Sam Williams Dixon scoring against Scrambling a couple of weeks ago. I think it was Sam Williams Dixon. Right. Number one. I remember something before the game, something, of course, the game. Ohio State kind of, you know, took care of business as opposed to the first two games I covered out there in 80, 86 and 94. I remember seeing Andy Geiger on the sideline before the game started when we were down on the sideline and he came up and I don't know why, but he gave me a hug. I don't know, it was really interesting. And then I remember after the game, because we were always looking for, under Ray Stein's tutelage, we were always looking for interesting places to eat. We ate at a. Some kind of seafood place. I ordered the squid, the calamari, but it wasn't fried calamari. It was at Sauteed or that squishy kind of calamari. And I remember having intestinal desonates for two days after eating that squid. So that's, that's the most memorable thing to me. I think I was there, I'm not sure. I think I was there when Brian Hartline said he caught that fish from a fishmonger there at Pike Place Market. I think I was actually there watching that. So nice. But as Far as the game, it kind of, you know, Todd Beckman, whatever. They, you know, they took care of business.
B
Yeah. Is it. So we have, we have apologies and intestinal issues. What a trip. What a trip. That was up in the Pacific Northwest. Bill Landis, what were you doing on September 15, 2007?
D
So I was a sophomore in college. It's possible that I was at the Penn State Buffalo game that day, but I don't have any recollection of being there. Was a big one. Anthony Morelli threw four touchdowns. I went and looked it up. Maybe, maybe the best game of his career. But I did go through. It's nice to have like the ability to go through a Facebook and just like find pictures from the past. There are pictures of me and my friends in my Dorm room from September 15, 2007. And we were in our dorm room watching Boy Meets World on our small television and there's a giant like Entourage poster hanging behind me in my dorm room. It was a very 2007 moment. But yeah, I don't, I don't recall exactly what I was doing that day, but I was either watching Anthony Marley throw four touchdowns or watching Boy Meets World in my dorm room. Or possibly both.
C
Both. Both.
B
Wish we were there, man. Wish we were there. I actually think that kind of was a good description of what happened in that game on September 15, 2007. Boy meets world. It was Jake Locker was the boy who met the world. That was Ohio State and that like, I remember like the Jake Locker hype. And it's interesting because Jake Locker was a redshirt freshman. He was making his third career start. He had run for like 85 yards a game in the first two games. It was like, hey, here's this young quarterback who can move, which is what we're talking about with Damond Williams Jr. Right now, who's a second year quarterback, who's a young guy who can move. And Jake Locker did run for 100 yards against Ohio State. He also threw three picks, two to James Laurinitis. Yes, James Laurinaitis. Two interceptions in that game, one for Malcolm Jenkins. So. And then I was like, man, because I can remember thinking like, oh man, there's a lot of Jake Locker hype. And then I was like, I don't know, Jake Locker. Are we supposed to be impressed? He was, he was a freshman and then he was a four year starter at Washington and became a first round draft pick three years later. So it just is a reminder as we go back to what we were saying before of like, I Think you have to respect Washington and you have to be aware of their skill, talent, and you have to be aware of. It's a long trip and you have to be aware of their home field advantage. But there are times when there's been hype around young quarterbacks before and they run into the world that is the Ohio State defense and it can be kind of tough on those guys.
C
Oh, isn't that funny? Isn't that funny because August 30th, that happened, right?
B
Yeah. Right.
C
It's funny how Jake Locker, and I'm not knocking the young man, I thought he was a hell of a player, especially in college football. But it's funny how your reputation carries you all the way into the NFL draft and then all of a sudden the NFL gets a hold of you and it's like, oh yeah, boy meets real world. And yeah. And it's crazy, but yeah. James Laurinatis welcomed Jake Locker into the, into the National Collegiate Athletic association world.
E
Reminds me a little bit when Ohio State played Cal a few years ago and Jared Goff was a true freshman. I don't think poorly in that game. Ohio State just. First of all, they took over Cal Stadium in Berkeley.
B
Yeah.
E
As only Buckeye fans could do, probably, but. And then Jared Goff ends up having again, he didn't play poorly as a true freshman.
C
No, he did not.
E
Number one overall pick of the draft. Look what he's doing now with the Lions.
C
Yeah. And Keenan Allen, remember, bowed out of that game. I think he could have played and didn't play and then. But, but yeah, Jared Goff looked like he weighed 150 pounds and was 6 foot 7 or something. You know, it was like. It was kind of. Yet he got hit so many times in that game. It's kind of reminded me of Joe Burrow in that spring game where he was the only quarterback without the black jersey on. But he was still accurate, you know what I mean? Even though he was getting pounded. That's what Jared Goff. You could tell he was going to be something because he, he should have been broken into that day, but he was not.
B
It is a reminder. The Ohio State defense is a great test for any young quarterback out there. Yeah, Dave Biddle at Buck Nuts. What can. Where can the people find you? What can they be expecting from the great Buck Nuts coverage this week?
E
Yeah, just same as usual. We'll have The Buck Nuts Morning 5 podcast every morning. We usually do it around 9 o' clock some. Sometimes it's as late as 10am but somewhere between 9am and 10am we do the Buck Nuts Morning 5 live every day. We'll have coverage of the Ryan Day press conference as I'm sure everybody on the beat will tomorrow. So yeah, check us out. Bucknuts Morning five and appreciate you guys having me on.
B
Tim May. Where can people find you?
C
Fan stream sports fanstreamsports.com that's where the Tim y' all is by the way. Uh, at the parlay, uh, last week at uh, because it was an off week but I had uh, dumped a berry on he and I chopping it up and we could go for 45 to 50 hours non stop talking about things. But I limited him to like 35 minutes and it was cool. But. But yeah, I'm really enjoying what I'm doing now. I still do stuff for 97.1 the fan. Matter of fact I did two gigs last week. I won from 6 to 9am I don't recommend that for any sane individual. By the way.
E
I was dropping my daughter off at school and I was driving, driving back and I heard you look at Tim Bates 6:30.
C
I should have given, I should have given a day. But, but I enjoy filling in whatever they need me to fill in and I'm just enjoying life right now. And also Clay and I do this thing for behind the O. We do a little stand up two minute segments where we talk about different things about the upcoming game or what's going on with the team and stuff. So uh, that's a little new thing that's come along this year also real.
E
Quick, I just want to say to you guys, to Doug and Bill, what you guys are doing is really cool. Like I'm a fan. Like what you guys are doing is really, really cool. I like that it's the bad show. You guys are all stars and great idea you guys came up with and I, in addition to your substack stuff. I love it. Happy for you guys.
C
I would have bought it if it was. I would have also bought if it was the dab show. A little dab will do you a little dabble. Do you baby.
B
But I'd be doing that every show and that we were like, no, I'm first.
C
Hey, my two grandsons do that. I don't even think they know what it came from. They just saw somebody else do it.
B
Yeah, me too. What are we doing this week? Bill on at the Bill and Doug show on our substack here on YouTube. Do you know what we're doing?
D
Yeah, we're gonna do some some more previewing of this Ohio State Washington game, some film review stuff, hopefully linking up with Christian Capel who covers Washington on Substack 2 to get some more insight on on that team. But yeah, we're we had the question is this is this or is this not a big game? I think we're going to treat it like one and then we'll see what happens on Saturday.
B
Sounds like a plan. Thanks to all you guys for being here. We do it every Monday on Around the Shoe, this giant, robust, intriguing, insightful Ohio State beat.
