Bill Landis
Welcome back to the Bill and Doug Show. It's time for our national Northern Big Ten More than just Ohio State picks. Douglas, Maurice, Bill Landis will do this every Friday. Bill, we're still figuring out a little bit of the specifics, but this is a version of things we've done before. This is, this is beyond a single team scope. We're talking about six different games we're going to make picks on today.
Doug Lee Maurice
We are. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna try to do well with my picks. Last year I sucked at my picks and those weren't even against the spread. I still. These were just picking winners. This year we were picking against the.
Bill Landis
Spread, but we figured out some point in the middle of last season that I was sitting in a cave and putting 14 hours of work into my picks. And you were like, I need to get the graphics out. I'm making my picks in 11 seconds. And then I was like, oh, that's why I'm beating you. And then once you started trying, then you got better.
Doug Lee Maurice
A little better. Yeah. Still not great.
Bill Landis
You beat me in week one. We did this last week and we'll always have an Ohio State pick as part of it. Last week we were both three and three in our national picks. But you were correct on Ohio State. Texas. You picked Ohio State. I picked Texas. So you wound up four and three Overall, I wound up three and four overall. That's against the spread. But it's also. We had the same record straight up. But we are doing it against the spread this year. We both picked Clemson. That was wrong. Against lsu. We both picked Bama against Florida State. But I at least picked Florida State to cover. You did not. We both. I picked Notre Dame against Miami. I picked Texas. You correctly picked those. But you then also picked Syracuse because you just went with with heart and soul and Fran Brown.
Doug Lee Maurice
The most. I think it was my most emphatic pick was picking Syracuse to be Tennessee. And it was the most wrong. I was.
Bill Landis
It was the most wrong. Your heart was in the right place. So we appreciate that. We're gonna make picks on six games this week. In order. We'll do Michigan, Oklahoma, then Cyhawk, Iowa, Iowa State, then a one that is the. Bill land is special. Illinois, Duke. I'm fascinated to see where you land there. Oregon, Oklahoma State, which means we'll just take some shots at Mike Gundy, Michigan State, Boston College and Kansas, Missouri. We made our picks for Ohio State, Grambling State on our Ohio State pick show on Thursday. Let's start with the Wolverines at the Sooners. This is number 15, Michigan at number 18, Oklahoma at 7:30pm Saturday night on ABC. Oklahoma is favored by four and a half. This, I think, Bill, is a very important game for Big Ten SEC perception.
Doug Lee Maurice
I think it's huge.
Bill Landis
Yeah, Oklahoma is currently ninth in the odds to win the SEC at 20 to 1, but there's kind of a cluster after the top four teams in the SEC, so they're clearly in that mix. You could argue there might be some people who think Oklahoma is the fifth best team in the sec. You could argue that. And if there are people with brains and eyeballs, you could argue they're maybe the fourth best team in the SEC because Bama stinks like hot garbage. Ohio. Michigan is fourth in the Big Ten odds at plus 858 1/2 to 1 to win the Big Ten. They're clearly behind the top three of Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon. But they're close enough, Bill, that I think it's a fair representation that Oklahoma is to the SEC as Michigan is to the Big Ten. Isn't exactly right, but it's close enough to, I think, couch this game in that thought process.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I think so. If you. If you like, lop off the top tier of both conferences and like, I don't think I put Michigan in there for the Big Ten. It's currently constructed but. But that's the team that's knocking on the door the most. Right. That's the biggest brand anyway. That's knocking on the door the most. And I. And, and Oklahoma is probably not quite in that same rung relative to the rest of the sec. But as, but as a brand I think it is right. Like, like a healthy. A healthy Big Ten wants a healthy Michigan and a healthy SEC wants a healthy Oklahoma. So they are pretty similar. Michigan's clearly had more recent success than Oklahoma has. But. And there's like resets happening at both a little bit too in ways that are interesting. Not that true. Morris anywhere near the hot seat. But. But Venables at Oklahoma I think clearly is depending on how the season goes. So it's a super interesting matchup. Just from a football standpoint, I think it's interesting. But then when you like kind of involve the narrative of everything, it enhances it a lot.
Bill Landis
The narrative of Sharon Moore was dear God, suspend me for anything, but not this. Yeah, he is taking a two game suspension but he really did not want it to be here in week two because he played college football at Oklahoma and this means something to him. Do you think it factors into the football in some way?
Doug Lee Maurice
I think it could, yeah. He's certainly not the first coach to coach against his alma mater, but.
Bill Landis
I.
Doug Lee Maurice
Think in the past we've seen that impact people in negative ways. Especially when it's. When it's there when you're back on campus. Right. I think. I think the feelings tend to creep in a little more. So it could, it could throw you out of whack a little bit. I don't know that I considered it much in making my pick, but I definitely think be a factor.
Bill Landis
Four true freshmen started in for power four teams at quarterback last week and they all were pretty darn good. Bear Bachmeier at byu. Malik Washington at Maryland. Great. Good luck to Maryland. I worked on it. On this. You're better at it. I worked on it and I will give credit. The Cal quarterback was throwing seeds. They do have the click the button audio pronunciation on the Cal website. Next to his name, it's him saying it. We all should learn to say it because it's respectful to know how to say someone's name but also because this dude can sling it.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, he was good actually.
Bill Landis
You go ahead maybe though.
Doug Lee Maurice
So let me ask, did you listen to the recording of his name?
Bill Landis
I listened to it 30 times and I spent.
Doug Lee Maurice
I spent so much time trying to figure out what his last name was that I just assumed that. You say his first name is Jaren, but is that correct or is that wrong?
Bill Landis
It is correct.
Doug Lee Maurice
Okay.
Bill Landis
But his second name is pronounced Kielve.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. And then it's Sanga Pulatelli.
Bill Landis
Sangha Pulatelli. Yes. Sanga Pulatelli is correct. Because also, I was doing a thing. I was watching his highlights, both to watch him rip throws as a left. He looks like Michael Penix. Just rip.
Doug Lee Maurice
He does. Rip, rip, rip, rip, rip, rip.
Bill Landis
But also, within the highlights, you are getting the thing where the announcers doing the game were doing everything in their powers to not say his name. They called him the freshman. They called him jks. They. It's one of those where I forget people's names all the time. So I go through life doing like a, hey, great to see you. Hey, I call everybody, hey. They were calling the. The breakout freshman star of college football hey the whole game because they didn't exactly want to say his name. And they're the professional announcers who are paid to do it. So we will do our best. We will all learn it. He looked really good.
Doug Lee Maurice
He did look really good. Yeah, I. And that was like a situation where I can't actually recall the timing of it. So Devin Brown transferred from Ohio State to Cal, but I think maybe at the time that he had transferred to Cal, Sanga Pulatelli wasn't. He was going to Oregon still. Yeah. Because he was committed to Cal and then flipped to Oregon and then transferred back. Like, I. I think. And then he showed up and Devin Brown was like, well, I guess I'm not the quarterback.
Bill Landis
Because everybody was sort of like, man, I can't believe Devin Brown didn't go win that job. And then you watch the first game, you're like, oh, oh, yeah. This is not about Devin Brown. This is about jks. So he looked great. And then also the whole point of this is Bryce Underwood looked really good at his best. His best Moments were awesome. 21 of 31 for 251. He did not run. Yeah, he did not run. He was credited with two rushing attempts because he got sacked twice. They called zero called runs for him, and he did not scramble. And I am super interested in that going into this Oklahoma game because you know what I bet he can do? I bet he can run and I bet he can scramble, and I bet they can use him in the called run game when they want to. And they decided not to do it against New Mexico as Michigan won that game fairly handily. But it is something I think that we must Take into consideration because there was a lot of good from Bryce Underwood, but it was not the full Bryce Underwood.
Doug Lee Maurice
It wasn't. I was watching that game. Well, I can't remember I was like second screening that game and but ever I was like, why isn't he running? Why isn't he running? I want to see this guy run and see what it looks like. He, There were a couple plays right where he got outside the pocket and threw the ball where you got a feel for his athleticism. But yeah, def. I would just assume like they, they, they didn't want to show that against New Mexico because they didn't have to. But I bet we see it on Saturday.
Bill Landis
Very comfortable on the rollout, like kind of three, three, three step, little roll rip. I thought if his first read was there, he throws and I thought if his first read wasn't there, he threw it there anyway. And sometimes threw into traffic, sometimes missed, but often hit and they were getting the ball out of his hands. He was hitting guys on the move. Marlon Klein, the tight end had a really good game with six catches. You could see they were sort of talking about, you know, Donovan McCully and Samaj Morgan and the different guys they have in the past game that they think they can be a little bit more explosive. It wasn't that he missed at times because guess what, it was his first game of his college career and he's barely out of high school. But when he hit he was very confident, he was very decisive, he was very on target. And man, I just think Michigan fans should be extremely excited about this. But I think, I think there's like a level up opportunity in week two.
Doug Lee Maurice
Oh yeah, there's plenty of room to level up. I think there, there were some throws in that game against New Mexico where they were like semi tight windows. And part of me wonders did he complete those passes because he knew that the New Mexico guy just wasn't going to be athletic enough to get the ball or did he just get lucky and, and like will those windows close close faster against a team like Oklahoma or any other power competition that Michigan might play in a way that could get Bryce Underwood into some trouble maybe. But you know, young quarterbacks make mistakes. I, I thought he looked calm, like a great handle for the offense and what Michigan was trying to do, the arm talent's incredible. The thing maybe of like throwing from him that that stood out the most to me was whether it was in the screen game or just on intermediate stuff that that had opportunities for catch and run the ball Was like, in the perfect spot for the receiver to catch it without breaking stride. Just really sharp in a lot of areas. For a kid who I think, like, just turned 19, maybe, or maybe he's still 18, like, yeah, he's, He's. He lived up to the building. I know they played New Mexico and he'll have stiffer challenges, but for the first game, kind of looked like everything you'd want to. Want it to look like.
Bill Landis
He had, like, a little play where he threw a little touch pass that kind of looped a guy out of the backfield, and he. He had to get some air under it and put it right on the guy's hands and just some. Some stuff to really build on, you know, they didn't blow New Mexico out of the water. They got up 17, nothing pretty early, and then 134, 17. The thing that I think this game might come down to, though, is Michigan ran it. Justice Haynes had a very good game, 16 for 159 and three touchdowns. Jordan Marshall didn't do as much, but Oklahoma, in beating Illinois State handily 35 to 3, did not run it well. John Matiere, their transfer quarterback, was 30 of 37 for 392. But, like, what are you gonna do? Like, that's not a shot.
Doug Lee Maurice
Did you watch any of those highlights? Because it looked like he was playing seven on seven or not seven on seven. Excuse me. Routes on air, like, guys were wide open.
Bill Landis
But Oklahoma didn't run up that well, and Michigan ran it well. And maybe that's what turns this game.
Doug Lee Maurice
I think, in winning as emphatically as Oklahoma won, there were some concerns about Oklahoma's offensive line coming out of that game, which I think all relates to the run game. Yeah, it could be. Especially if you're Michigan on the road. Right? You want. You want to run it, like, you want to shorten the game. So if Michigan can run it, I think Michigan will win. I just don't know that they'll definitely be able to.
Bill Landis
I'm gonna pick Michigan. I'm gonna take Michigan 20 to 14.
Doug Lee Maurice
I'm gonna take Oklahoma 24, 21. So that's a Michigan cover, but it's an Oklahoma win. I. I don't know what to make of Oklahoma. I don't. I actually don't love John Mateer. I think he gets away with a lot of stuff.
Bill Landis
How dare you? How dare you? College football, as a consensus, has decided uniformly that he is the greatest transfer quarterback in college football history.
Doug Lee Maurice
You trace, he's super fun to watch, and he's really entertaining. I just. He's a little. He's a little risky for my liking at times. I don't. And I don't. I don't know what to make of Oklahoma. Like, they weren't. They weren't tested at all. Michigan actually, like, was tested a little bit by New Mexico, and I guess you could spin that as a negative because even if you look at the. The net success rate stuff that Parker Fleming puts out there, Michigan, New Mexico was, like, actually pretty close. One of the closer games of the weekend. I'll take Oklahoma at home because I think it's a tough ask for a true freshman to go win on the road. And we're going to win that game on the road this early in his career. But that. That's kind of it. Like, I don't know that. I see a tremendous advantage for Oklahoma on either side of the ball. I'll just kind of lean on the inexperience or lean towards the experience of Oklahoma's quarterback and pick Oklahoma at home.
Bill Landis
If it goes the way you predict, what's going to be. What's going to be. The fine, Bob, fine bomb south honking narrative of this, do you think it will be bad for the Big Ten?
Doug Lee Maurice
No. Not if it's close. Not if it's competitive.
Bill Landis
Okay. It is a road game. It's a big opportunity. So if. If that's where we are, that, man, if Michigan can win this on the road with a true freshman quarterback making his second career start, that says something about the Big Ten. But now I feel like, now look at us. This is exactly how the SEC does it. If Michigan wins, it's a giant state statement that defines both conferences. If Oklahoma wins, it's not great. We've done it. We've done it. Not only has the north won the last two national championships, we have officially learned all the talking points. No downside for Michigan and the Big Ten here.
Doug Lee Maurice
You are correct. One thing we did not mention. J. Sean Barham out for the first half of this game. Michigan linebacker, because he got ejected for targeting against New Mexico.
Bill Landis
That is just the college football powers that be doing the north wrong. J shot. What an outrage that Jayshawn Barm is ejected from that game for what was a very middling targeting call. Outrageous. Bill Landis. Oh, we're. We're all the way there. It just happened. It just happened. We're there. All right. We disagree on the first pick. Great. What else is new? No, actually, this is great because normally we pick the exact same thing.

Game number two Iowa at Iowa State it is Cyhawk on Big Noon.
Doug Lee Maurice
It is.
Bill Landis
Iowa State is a three and a half point favorite, so it's basically a toss up game because it is at Jack Trice Stadium. Matt Campbell is 2 and 6 in Cyhawk as the coach of the Iowa State Cyclones. Kirk Ference is 14 and 11 in this game as the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa State is just like in a. I'm super curious about Iowa State here because they had the win over Kansas State in Ireland where I thought Kansas State like arguably like looked more talented. But Iowa State looked like the more connected team that found a way to win. But then when they both came back from Ireland, that's I don't know, it's like a 40 hour flight. Kansas State looked bad last week and struggled to win in the final minute and Iowa State thumped South Dakota 55 to 7. So it's kind of like, okay, like I see, I see you Matt Campbell, I see you Matt Campbell, absolutely, positively handling your business. But I also wonder if there's a little if like this is the exhaustion tipping point of like we went to Ireland, we won a top 25 matchup, we came home, we kicked somebody's butt and now we're playing our rival. Like this is the crazy. This is a, you know, it's only week two and they're playing their third straight game and it's their rivalry game. I'm a little curious if maybe we see this is where Iowa State hits the wall. Curious about that or no?
Doug Lee Maurice
I don't know. Maybe. I guess so. Like, why would. Why would a wall exist? I guess, like, my question, like, I. I wouldn't. I wouldn't have been shocked by some kind of hangover last week because South Dakota is, like, also a good FCS team. Like, that's a. They're the number four team in the FCS poll.
Bill Landis
Yep.
Doug Lee Maurice
And they blew their doors off, like, which is what a power conference team should do. So I don't. I don't. I don't know why suddenly Iowa State would hit some kind of wall. You know, are there things about Iowa State that potentially, like, have been masked the last two weeks because the opener was weird and the second game was against an FCS team? Sure. Possible, if not likely. But I don't know. Rocco Beck seems like he's in a pretty good spot right now. And you like some of the weapons at Iowa State, even if maybe, like, the receivers didn't pop the way you thought you hoped they would in that first game against Kansas State, like a tight end, they're good at running back. They're good. Offensive line looked all right. We know they're usually going to play good defense. So I don't know. I like. I kind of like where Iowa State is coming into this game, and I don't know what to make of Iowa because Mark Gronowski threw the ball 15 times for 40 yards last week.
Bill Landis
I know.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah.
Bill Landis
Not so different. Rocco backed last week, by the way, 19 of 20 for 278 yards and three touchdowns. If he truly was great, he would have been perfect. Come on, Rocco back. Rocco Beck looks great through the first two games of the season. Officially, Mark Radowski 8 of 15 for 44 yards left with cramps in the third quarter and a 347 win over Albany afterward, he said first game he was too excited. He was pressing. Kirk Ference kind of passed it off as a, you know, a bad night, but also moderate alarm bells going off at a place that believed that Mark Konowski was the answer to their quarterback prayers. And he threw for 4:34 yards against an FCS team in his first start. Who's the guy from a couple years ago? Was that Deacon. What's his name?
Doug Lee Maurice
Deacon Hill.
Bill Landis
Deacon Hill, yeah. Like, is this one of those where it's. I mean, it's like. It's like Mission Impossible. It's like Mark Gronowski rips his face off and he's Deacon Hill.
Doug Lee Maurice
Deacon. Oh my God. That's Spencer Beatrice. Yeah.
Bill Landis
By the way, biggest winner of the Belichick Carolina debacle. Therans family. Because Steve Belichick's running that defense for Papa down at UNC got absolutely torched. And nobody's talking about Brian Ferenc's nepotism anymore. We're on to Belichick nepotism.
Doug Lee Maurice
So Brian checks on that stuff. Or three if you can. If you include Papa. Yeah.
Bill Landis
So. So Iowa wins and also Kirk Ferent is tied with Woody Hayes for the most wins ever by a coach in the Big Ten at 205. If he's going to get it, I don't think I. I don't think he's going winless the rest of his career. He's going to be the all time winningest Big Ten coach in history. He could get it in the rivalry game. Yeah, that'd be kind of a thing. And I think he will. I'm taking Iowa 1917. I think last week, good offensive line for Iowa. Right. They had a couple injuries.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah.
Bill Landis
Like the quarterback stuff went as bad as it could go, but like bottom. That was like the worst opener that every. That was exactly what they didn't want.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yes.
Bill Landis
And Iowa State has. Has been awesome for two weeks. So in my analytical football mind, I look at a team that is on a roll with two great performances and I look at a team that laid an egg last week and I say, laid an egg team, it's your time. So I'll take the Hawkeyes 1917.
Doug Lee Maurice
Okay. You're not excited?
Bill Landis
You're not?
Doug Lee Maurice
No, I'm not. I'll take an Iowa State 21 20. But that's another. That's a cover for Iowa. So I'll take it. I'll take the points with the road team, but I'm picking Iowa State to win. Watch Dom Orange on the interior against Logan Jones and our guy. Logan Jones, Kate Peeper and them boys. Yeah.
Bill Landis
Oh, yeah. Come on. You're going. You're going. You're answering. You're going anti people here.
Doug Lee Maurice
No, people threw for 44 yards, man. What am I supposed to do? Was Tim Lester holding, Holding back magic tricks against Albany and he's gonna, he's gonna unleash them against Iowa State? I don't think so.
Bill Landis
He was cramping up, man. Come on. He's cramping up. Give the guy a break. All right, Explain yourself here. Illinois @ Duke, noon ESPN. Illinois is favored by three and a half. You're. You are. Is that a blue Devil hat you're wearing? I don't know. Is that a Devil on there? You're wearing a blue Devil hat.
Doug Lee Maurice
No, it's a Columbus Clippers hat.
Bill Landis
Okay. I get confused. You're taking. What do you explain yourself? I. I know nothing and I want to know nothing.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I mean, I just feel like I have to take Duke, right? I have. I have to.
Bill Landis
Yeah.
Doug Lee Maurice
I have to hold true to my priors, which is Duke is going to make the playoff and that. That involved them winning this game. I will say it was a little slow going for Duke against Elon. It did win 45, 17. And it seemed to figure some stuff out in that game. And Darian Mensah, the quarterback transfer from Tulane, did come out of week one the second highest graded quarterback in the country. Whether. I don't know if that means anything to you, but he did. Yeah, probably not. They're like, they're. You know, there are questions, I think along Duke's offensive line, they have like one soft spot I don't love. I think they might have a freshman playing tackle. They have a young guy playing tackle who's gonna have to try to block Gabe in this game, which, you know, could not. Well, potentially for, For. For Duke. But I have to. I'm rolling with Duke. I have to. I can't say everything I said about Duke in the off season and not picking the win this game. So I am picking him to win. 27, 24.
Bill Landis
27, 24. I will delight in you going down in flames on this 1. Illinois 52 to 3 over Western Illinois last week. The Kaden and Aiden show. 22 carries, 175 yards, three touchdowns combined for Aiden Lofre and Kaden Fagan. Love it. I know. It's like that guy Josh McCrae went to Georgia as a transfer because. Because this is where we are now, where Georgia needs to solve its problems by recruiting Illinois's third best running back in the transfer portal. And it's like, go Dogs. And it's like, Illinois is fine. Illinois is fine. They're replacing Pat Bryant, Hank Beatty, 100 yards receiving last week. That worked well. Gabe Akis, two sacks. You just said it. I thought, like that. We saw. Of course it was against an inferior opponent, but we saw. I think we saw Illinois, like, Illinois showed what it can be, will be. I still have them in the playoff, so, yeah, you can take your blue devil hat and cram it, Landis. No offense. I think 33, 21 fighting line. I.
Doug Lee Maurice
Okay. And that's a. I don't know if we said this, but is it three and a half still Illinois favored?
Bill Landis
Illinois is favored by three and a half. Correct?
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. Duke is gonna like, is gonna throw a lot of junk at Illinois offensive line and at Luke Altmeyer. I, you know, Luke Altmeyer is a fifth year quarterback. He should be able to handle that. It's an experienced offensive line. Although Brandon Henderson didn't play last week, the starting right guard. And no one really seems to know why or if he's gonna play this week. So I guess that's a spot to watch along the offensive line for Illinois. But Illinois should be better on both lines of scrimmage. Both quarterbacks I think are good, but Illinois has the more experienced quarterback. It has the much better rushing attack. Dude can't really run the ball unless Darian Menz is doing it. So there are a lot of things adding up here for Illinois to win on the road. But I'm gonna go down, go down swinging with Duke.
Bill Landis
So I respect your consistency. Just beyond just. We'll, we'll cut this out later. Like bet your house. Bet your house. No priors. You'd take Illinois.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, probably.
Bill Landis
Okay. That's okay.
Doug Lee Maurice
It's okay.
Bill Landis
My daughter said that the background is making my eyes look so blue. She said I look like a white walker.
Doug Lee Maurice
Oh, nice.
Bill Landis
Should I do the rest of the show like this? Please don't see what people think of that. Do I, I look like the undead? Do I look like the undead?
Doug Lee Maurice
No.
Bill Landis
It's not just the eyes either. My whole body looks like the undead. Oregon, Oklahoma State. Mike Gundy's whining. Oklahoma state at Oregon 3:30 on CBS. 28 and a half, I think is the line. Is that right? 28 and a half.
Doug Lee Maurice
It's a big old spread for two power conference themes.
Bill Landis
So if you didn't pay attention to this. And why would anybody pay attention to Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State? Mike Gundy wound up complaining this week. It's like he's, it's. He's trying to break off the top 20 of the, of the college football to go do their own thing. On his own. He created a new tier where he's basically complaining about Oregon's resources compared to Oklahoma State's resources and then wondering why Oregon's even scheduling a team like Oklahoma State because he doesn't view them on the same level anymore. And he's kind of talking like Oregon's buying a team and then Dan landing is sort of like, what are you. What are you doing? So if this is where we are where within the Power 4 now we're officially creating the resourced Power 4 and the lesser resource power for if you're trying to break off the top tier, this is the fastest way to do it. So Mike Gundy thinks Oklahoma State shouldn't play Oregon. So I guess he just thinks the only teams in the big like who's in the Big 12 then that Oregon should play nobody. Oregon should never play anybody in the Big 12. So I just thought it like he. But all he's doing is creating preemptive excuses for the loss that his crappy team is sure to take. And now. But the thing he's done is he's enticed Dan Lanning to put him in a blender even more than Oregon was going to do anyway.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. Did you like the quote from Dan Lanning?
Bill Landis
I got the gist. Give me the what was the best.
Doug Lee Maurice
What was the best quote we spend to win. Some people save to have an excuse for why they don't.
Bill Landis
My God. Come on. They got oil rigs in Oakland. They got oil rigs and still Peter Pickens.
Doug Lee Maurice
Man. They invented the billionaire benefactor in college football. Their billionaire's dead. He's not around to give him money anymore. I don't think he was actually a billionaire, but he had a lot of money.
Bill Landis
Yeah. T. Boone Pickens walked so Phil Knight could strap on those Nikes and run, baby. So it is. This is the billionaire showdown.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah.
Bill Landis
This is the whole thing that everybody talks about. I was like, do you have a guy? It's like Texas Tech has a guy and Oregon has a guy. But like not every place has a guy. Michigan, if Larry Ellison is going to keep doing this stuff, has a guy. Great to have a guy. Nothing wrong with having a guy. The rules say you can have a guy. Not everywhere necessarily has a guy though. So some places you have to strap together a gigantic fan base opportunities around your program that businesses want to be part of that kind of thing. So I don't like Gundy. It's been a great highly. He's the Kirk Ference of long haired mullet land. Although Kirk France again, once upon a time, as we've talked about before, had a mullet. So I. It's just he must be so frustrated because he feels because Oklahoma State's like four years removed from being a play away from the 14 playoff. It's not like Oklahoma State has fallen off the cliff in the modern era. But he must feel Like Oklahoma State has zero chance to compete with the way things are evolving. And so he's just assuming he's going to get his butt kicked in his mad.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. This feels like both coaches watch the film when they know what's going to happen in this game because Gundy's trying to get out in front of it and Dan Landing's talking spicy because he knows they're gonna kick their butts and Oklahoma State's gonna play its backup quarterback because Hoss Haney got hurt. He like broke his foot early in their game last week, so Zane Flores had to come in and play. Oregon's gonna hammer them. I have 49, 14.
Bill Landis
Are you tricking me? There's not a real person named Haas Haney in college football. You try.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah.
Bill Landis
Really?
Doug Lee Maurice
He's from Tech, he's from Texas. He was a TCU and then he transferred to Oklahoma State. Yeah.
Bill Landis
In the course of this conversation, I added an extra touchdown for Oregon to make sure that it's emphatic enough. What was the score that you said again?
Doug Lee Maurice
49 14.
Bill Landis
I have 52 13. I really like taking Oregon minus the 28 and a half here because I think there's enough spice that he's not going to call off the dogs. I don't think so.
Doug Lee Maurice
Dante Moore played well last week. They played Montana State, but he looks sharp. Makai Hughes had one carry. Don't know why. See if he has more this week.
Bill Landis
Oh, there's some college football secrets out here. Illinois offensive lineman not playing for no reason. I think I voted. Makai Hughes is like number two in Big Ten preseason offensive player of the year balloting.
Doug Lee Maurice
So he's going to. He's going to need more than one carry to get.
Bill Landis
He's going to have some ground to make up.
Doug Lee Maurice
Okay.
Bill Landis
Oregon's going to kick Oklahoma State's booty.

This is a Great Northern Battle. Boston College at Michigan. It's on NBC. It's at 7:30pm on Saturday. Sneaky. Good quarterback matchup. Not sneaky for us. Not sneaky for people who follow this kind of thing, but just like sneaky for Paul Feinbaum, who probably couldn't name. Well, he could name the quarterback at Boston College because he was at Alabama Free before he transferred. Boston College 6610 over Fordham last week. That new quarterback, Dylan Lonergan, the Alabama transfer, Bill O' Brien's type of guy. 26 of 34 for four touchdowns and Lewis Bond, who's been doing it for a while at BC.138 receiving yards. Aiden Childs last week for Michigan State, 17 of 23 for 155 and a touchdown. The touchdown went to Nick Marshall, one of the best young receivers in the country. 236 over Western Michigan. Not completely dominant, but Aiden Childs, Dylan Lonergan I'm turning that on.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah, I think it's gonna be pretty entertaining. This was a close game last year. It was in the rain, so it was a little lower scoring, kind of sloppy. Hopefully that's not the case this time around. I thought in the little bit that I watched of Michigan State, Western Michigan, Michigan state got up 21 nothing and just kind of parked it. I don't know what they were doing. I don't know if they were trying super hard after that to put it on Western Michigan. I thought Nick Marsh looked really good. I thought Aiden Child's. The moments look pretty sharp too. I have to be completely honest. I didn't watch a second of B.C.
Bill Landis
Fordham.
Doug Lee Maurice
The one thing I did take note of just looking through some of the stats from that game is that B.C. didn't run the ball well and that was a problem for them last year. And I wonder if in a game like this that might matter.
Bill Landis
Yeah, Turbo Richard only had like 45 rushing yards and I think as a.
Doug Lee Maurice
Team they average like three yards of carry against four. Yeah, no, they threw it all over the place and I think Dylan Lonergan And Grayson James, I think Grayson James had a passing touchdown off the bench doing that game. So I think they threw five touchdowns. So I'm gonna take Michigan State at home 28, 21. But I think it's going to be a good game.
Bill Landis
I am in the same range of this. And by the way, Michigan State is favored at home by four and a half. You had 28, 21 Spartans, I have 21, 16 Spartans. So that's barely a cover. But we're both taking Michigan State to cover in that game. But I think Boston College could be competitive. I absolutely think Boston College could be competitive. And we just have to be on alert. There's obviously so many comparisons here. Eli Holstein, Alabama transfer, Eli Holstein last year, one year at Alabama, transfer to Pitt, wins the starting job at Pitt against kind of an incumbent. It's basically the exact same situation that Nate Yarnell at Pitt going into last year had been the quarterback at the end of the previous year and people kind of thought he'd be the guy. And then Eli Holstein beat him out. And then Eli Holstein was a little loose, but like gunslingery won big games. Pit had a great first half of the season and Eli Holstein was a driving force of that. Dylan Lonergan is like, ah, maybe Grayson James, he, he took over the second half of last season after Thomas Castellanos left the team. I mean, they benched him for Grayson James first. That's why he left. But you kind of thought maybe Dylan Lonergan is going to win this job, you know, Bill o'. Brien. And then he did win the job. And so like to be on alert for shot out of a cannon. Dylan Lonergan is one of the stories of the season of September completely on the table?
Doug Lee Maurice
Yes, I think it's on the table. But I'm also wondering, I'll ask you what you think. Any, any potential, like meaningful blowback on Bill o' Brien? If Castellanos is good and Florida State is good and BC is just like 6 and 6 again.
Bill Landis
We knew it going into last year. It's not the style that Bill o' Brien wants. He wants more of a drop that guy who can rip it and Thomas Castellanos can rip it, but he's more of a wiggly playmaker. So we questioned that match the whole way. We kind of hoped it could work itself out. I don't know that anybody was shocked it didn't work out. And Bill o' Brien didn't recruit Thomas Castellanos. He took over. Like those things do happen. So, ah, do you think like, do you think there's a. How dare you do this, Bill o'. Brien. How could you not take advantage of this super talented guy?
Doug Lee Maurice
Maybe, maybe. I don't know. It really depends on what it all ends up looking like. They don't play each other this year, so that will help it. I. It wasn't a style fit like, and, and Castellanos is like a tremendous style fit for Gus Malzan. So, like.
Bill Landis
Yes.
Doug Lee Maurice
That he's looked better there and probably will be more successful in that offense is not surprising. I just think it would be nice for Bill o' Brien if Dylan Wandergan's good this year. Because it would be nice. Yeah, maybe it's. Maybe at some point he'll start to get asked some uncomfortable questions. If he's not and Castellanos continues to.
Bill Landis
Be good, that would, that would be very nice. I also, I'm not completely convinced that you're going to get 12 games like this out of Thomas Castellano's. Good luck to him. I hope you do. I mean, he was, he was a great quarterback for Boston College when he was there. Didn't work out. We understand why, but yeah, it's a little extra on the table here. Last game we're picking is Kansas versus Missouri. Kansas is getting six and a half at Missouri. Here it's the Border War. They played for 100 years, then they stopped playing. It's cool that they're doing this. And if Jalen Daniels doesn't turn the ball over, he at least got to give the Jayhawks a shot. And he's not turning the ball over so far this year.
Doug Lee Maurice
He's not. He's got one interception in his first two games against seven touchdowns. Last year at this point, through two games, he had three touchdowns and four interceptions. Now they had played a power P4 opponent. They played Illinois. Kansas did in week two last year. Kansas has played Fresno State and Wagner this year. And I didn't watch the wagon game, but I watched a decent chunk of the Fresno State game. I just thought Jalen Daniels looked like the healthy version of Jalen Daniels we saw a couple years ago when people were getting fired up about what he could be. Both. Both as a passer and a runner. And this is the kind of game where I think you really tap into his legs because it's a huge ride. Like, I don't know, like. Because it. They stopped playing it, like, I don't know that people really understand maybe outside of it, how big of a rivalry this is. This is a huge deal. This game's Happening And Jalen Daniels looks good. And Missouri. Missouri doesn't have questions at quarterback, but its plan blew up last week because they came into the season with a plan to play two quarterbacks and then one of them got hurt. So now it's just Bo Per Bula, the Penn State transfer who's also going to run a ton. I still have no idea what, what Bo Perbula is like if, if put into a situation where he has to throw the ball a lot against a good defense. So maybe Kansas will put him in a situation. So I think it's, I think it's a fun matchup. Kansas is getting a little something from transfer receivers too. Looks like in a way that's kind of interesting. So I'm actually, I'm gonna pick Kansas to win. I'm gonna pick Kansas. 31, 27.
Bill Landis
31, 27 Kansas. I do think I, I, I really like the plus six and a half here. Again, this is not exactly a gambling show but that, that spread seems a little much given what Kantas has done. It's a 3:30 game on ESPN2, a fun one to turn into. I'm all tune into. I'm also going to take Kansas. 27, 24. What'd you say again? 31. What?
Doug Lee Maurice
I said 31. 27.
Bill Landis
27. All right, so we have basically the same thing. So okay, we in straight up picks. We differed on the first three and then we got pretty similar after that. So you're taking Oklahoma, I'm taking Michigan. You're taking Iowa State, I'm taking Iowa. You're taking Duke, I'm taking Illinois. We both have an Oregon blow it over Oklahoma State. We both have Michigan State close over BC and we both have Kansas close over Missouri and then Ohio State, Grambling State, no line out still as we record this. You think it's a game day line at this point for a 330 kickoff?
Doug Lee Maurice
I yeah, I think it is common Practice for FBS vs. FCS lines to come out on Saturday.
Bill Landis
So we're guessing around 50 and we both pick 63 to nothing. Iowa, Ohio State and that one. So those are our picks. We'll do this every Friday. We'll do it kind of like this. So. And we like doing it, right? We like it.
Doug Lee Maurice
Yeah. And I think we'll, we'll also maybe have a little bit of time on Tuesdays. Right. Is that what we said to like to maybe talk about some of the results of these things and what they might mean too Tuesday night?
Bill Landis
We're working it out. Yeah, we're working it out. We want this to be a continuing part of our coverage. So obviously not five days a week, this kind of coverage, but we, we don't want to abandon it because we still think there's space to talk to lean northern college football, Big Ten college football. I mean, again, if there's a gigantic SEC game, I'm sure when it's Texas, Georgia will pick that. But I originally had like Arizona State, Mississippi State on our ledger. Then I was like, why let someone else pick that game? No offense to those teams, but like that's, that's not what we're here to do. So we'll talk about teams and games like this and we'll do it at least once a week and maybe twice a week, and we'll see what the future holds. We would certainly invite you to check out our Bill and Doug OSU substack where you can find daily premium Ohio State coverage, including premium videos and podcasts over there as well as premium written content. You go over there, you check it out, you put in your email, you can poke around, see what you think. And then of course, we're just here on the Bill and Doug show. We're just doing a whole bunch of videos. And then this also goes in podcast feeds. And if you're listening back on a podcast right now, thank you so much for being here. So we're just, we're trying to get out to the people, Bill.
Doug Lee Maurice
We are trying to get out to the people post game show on this channel Saturday. What? Probably 7:30ish? Yeah, no, that's no 6:36 37.
Bill Landis
That's an Ohio State specific post game show. But also like, you know, if there's a couple little things here and there that have also happened. And holy moly, did you see the end of Iowa State? We might have a couple short opinions on that. Right? Ball's out there. We're aware of all ball, so that's what we're doing. Thanks to you guys for being along for the ride. For now, he's Bill Landis, I'm Doug Lee Maurice and that was the Bill and Doug show.
