And this podcast is going to help you do so. So to help us do that, we've got a special guest. We've got Manuel. He is from STR Secrets. He is, he's a podcast host himself. He's got amazing short term rental business. He is a big influencer within the STR space as well. So let me welcome along Emmanuel. Thanks for joining me.
Emmanuel Pani
Oh, my pleasure. It's always so good to have people to speak with your accent, do any kind of introduction. I already feel more, more high level than I probably am. It's just a cheeky accent. Just makes it, makes it that much better. Pleasure being on, man. I appreciate you.
Liam
I appreciate you being here, man. So for the people who haven't heard of your business and yourself before, can you give yourself like the elevator pitch and what you'd like them to get out of this podcast?
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah, I love that. So I started in short term rentals in 2010. I graduated college. I had a degree in accounting and finance. I wanted to be a wolf in Wall Street. And at the time, if you guys remember, 2010, Wall street wasn't quite open for business. And so I came back from Geneva, Switzerland to South Florida where my mom was living at the time and kind of with my tail between my legs. And I began working as a maintenance guy in an apartment complex that did vacation rentals. This was before, you know, like the early stages of Airbnb. But as you all know, vacation rentals have been around since the beginning of time. And I started there and I, I loved it. I loved the hospitality aspect of it. I love people. I realized that all my people pleasing personalities worked great in hospitality. And that became kind of like the dream of like, I'm going to own this entire apartment complex. 12 years later, I bought the last apartment, all 40 units of it. In the meanwhile, I did all kinds of things right, Like I was very shiny object syndrome. So I've done wholesaling, flipping, syndication, so you name it in the real estate space, if the sun shined on it, I have done it. And along the way, I Partnered with my good friend Mike Schroger, and we launched SDR Secret podcast. I coach between SDR Secrets the community. And for me, that is really just the labor of love of just seeing people create a life that they want with vacation rentals.
Liam
That's amazing.
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah. And that, to me, is the most inspiring part of it now. Right? Like, I still grow my management business, I still buy real estate, but I spend most of my time coaching either vacation rentals or mindset. Really, it's. It's my. It's my favorite arena to be in for a variety of reasons.
Liam
The cool thing is about this is, I mean, there's people out there, right, who like, get one unit and that's. That's it, and that's. That's all they've got. But to complete on the 40th, and then, hey, you know, this is, this is what you do. You're living it, you're doing it. And obviously with Mike is a partner in this as well. That is super powerful. And there's going to be people listening to this who haven't. Hasn't heard of STR Secrets, you know, who should go and check that out, because you guys are rocking it, aren't you, when it comes down to, you know, listeners and presenting different talks and. And that side of things. So I'd see a lot of online Instagram posts and a lot of knowledge that you guys share all the time. So I think it's really important for people who are listening to this for the first time and who don't necessarily know you're from previous podcasts and things like that to really go and check out the content that yourself and Mike has put out there. So, yeah, we're diving in particularly to Mindset today, and there's lots of questions which come up, but you mentioned something in that intro there that you've. You've got the shiny penny. Kind of like, hey, I'll go and check this out. So I'm going to start off with that. How do you get the mindset of, hey, I've got to stick out this, and I've got to focus at this one thing without chasing the shiny penny all the time and getting too distracted so you don't achieve what you need to do?
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah. So I think to best answer that question, it's a matter of understanding just human nature. And what I have come to learn about myself and about other people is that we. We have come to understand that wanting things makes us ambitious. The reality of things is the one thing that makes you human, your brain goes from 1 to 1, from 1 to 1, from 1to 1 all day long. And if you're listening to this, by the time you woke up and you walked into the street to get into your car, your brain probably asks you for 20, 30 things. By that time, I want to go use the bathroom, I want some water. I want to eat that. I don't want to eat this, I want to eat that. I don't want that. So the idea is this, right? Your brain gets an idea. If your brain likes the idea, the idea becomes a want. If your brain really, really wants it, it becomes a goal. Once a goal gets in your mind, if you really want it, so you make a second decision, right? So the first decision is, I want that. That makes it a goal. Then the second decision is, oh, I really want that. That becomes a desire. The moment that becomes a desire, your desire is going to be the only thing that's going to go to battle with your paradigm. What is a paradigm? It's just your current set of beliefs and habits that you have. So a strong enough desire will go to battle with your paradigm and say, hey, we may, we might have access to a different kind of life. Once a desire becomes a burning obsession, then it's going to change your decision making and it's going to change your results. Once that happens, then life changes. So your question was, how do we go from just wanting things to actually achieving things? Well, the first part is understanding what it is that you want. And you'll be surprised how many coaching calls I do with people then like, so what do you want? Crickets? Or it's just the later state. So what's somebody's natural response? What one. More units. Okay. Why? Well, more money. Okay. Why? So it's in really understanding that, that game. So obviously the main step in all of this is awareness. Until you're aware of what your paradigm is, what the story is that you tell yourself about who you are and what you can do, we're not going anywhere. Awareness is the beginning of all change. Once we are aware of how we are, what we do and how we do things, we can change it. Then the next question is, well, how do you do that? The reality is the same way you program yourself to be the way you are, you, you can program yourself to be something else. And that's with a daily repetition of new thoughts. So the reality of most people, and I speak for myself, but I think most people have that in common, is that when things get difficult, we change our wants. And the problem is, guys, like, we can be committed to a. Most of us are committed to a plan more than a goal. And what I mean by that is the moment this plan of yours that came from what, from your paradigm, right? Came from your habits and the things that you know. So your stored information tells you, okay, Liam, we're gonna go to the store. This is the route to the store. Most of you, the moment there's a roadblock in the way, I'm like, you know what? I didn't really want to go to the store. Well, mate, is there not another way around it? No, no, no. It's down Main Avenue to the right. Or I can go to the store. Most of us are more committed to the plan being what we think it is and to the goal, which just tells me that that wasn't really a goal. Because I can also tell you that anytime I've been obsessed about something, I've gotten it 100% of the time, right? You can see with your kids, right? Like, if your kids ever been obsessed about something, they get it, don't they? They get it every single time.
Liam
My. My thoughts on that is I'm one of these people who. I'll be driving to the store, and I will go, do you know what? I am heading to that store for this reason. But on the way, I'll go past a bigger store or a store which might have what I want, and I'll go, that looks like a good store. Maybe I should drive towards that store instead. So, but for me, and I love this Metaphor because you're 100% right, so many people get that roadblock, and they just. They stop at that stage, they might turn around, they might go home. I never wanted to go there. I completely get that. The danger is, for me personally, is somebody goes, I'm making some good money doing X, Y, or Z, you know, And I see this different store that I will go, shall I go into that store? And I have to force myself so hard to go. Hang on. No. I said I was going to go to that store, and I'm going to stick to it. But it can't stop you from thinking, well, what if you did go to the other store? Would things be different? Would they be faster? Would it be better? You know, like, do you know what I mean?
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah. And I. And I think from that perspective, it's just understanding again what your goals are and what your. Your. Your desires are. And so if you are listening to this and you're not driving, if you write on a Piece of paper, desire and a paradigm. And then drive, draw two straight lines, they lead to decision. And under that, right Results, the only thing that will go to battle with your paradigm is your desires. So a strong enough burning desire would influence your decision making. Your decision making would then be reflected in your results. Once you start getting the results you want, what's another thing that's going to come into play? It's going to be discipline. So discipline is really being committed to a desire and continuing to fuel that desire once the initial decision goes away. The funny thing is that the moment you realize how much you can do, the more you realize I can have. I live in a taught universe. So what I think about, I create. You're like, okay, what does that mean? It means everything, right? Everything. Because the reality is also the way that you feel about yourself. Your attitude towards yourself and towards others. 80% of the time it just, it's just your paradigm.
Liam
It's powerful. It's powerful.
Emmanuel Pani
So how often, right, how often are you walking around pissed off towards somebody and you start the day like I start the day, man. And you can do this little exercise for yourself and see how different life is. I'm always great. I'm fantastic. I walk into a store, hey, how you doing? I'm fantastic, man. I never have bad days. People look at you and you're like, tops. What is wrong with this guy? What do you mean? I'm like, I never had bad days. Misery loves company, right? In Florida. Rains a lot. This weather. I mean, the UK rains a lot, right?
Liam
Oh, great.
Emmanuel Pani
This weather. Yeah, it's so muggy. You know what? I love the rain. Your subconscious is always, always listening. And so when you talk about yourself, when you talk about others around you, it's an understanding that in your desires, your desires are reflected in your language every single day.
Liam
What I love about this is the, what you said there about your thoughts. You create from your thoughts, right? And it takes me back to when I was working in a, in a department store. I didn't have my own business, but I always dreamed of having my own business, you know, like. And that was the desire, right back then. And it isn't until after the fact where you go and you think something, take action, and you create it, and then you look back and go, oh, hang on, I did. This wouldn't exist without that first initial thought and that first exist initial desire. And if you're listening to this going, hey, I'm. I'm in a job I don't want to be in. And Actually, I think I can get out of it. Well, actually, you're already on the first step to go, well, if you can think about something that you can create and obviously the bridge between that is then action, then you're moving in the right direction. But looking back, I didn't realize how important it was that I had that thought first thought about it, because if I was super comfortable, you know, like in, in what I was doing, I never would have pushed to go further. And I can see what you mean about as time goes on is you've got to maintain that desire and not get distracted. Because there's been times in my business where I suddenly go, oh, I'm quite comfortable now. I don't really need to go and get more. You know, I've, I've, I've. I get to go in the holidays or, you know, stuff like that. But actually, it's when there's challenges that remind me and go, oh, yeah, this is that desire. This is why I do what I do. This is why you, you can be comfortable at times, but ultimately you do still want to keep that desire burning because that is the thing which, which pushes you forward.
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah. And I love that you share that because I've had. I did a coaching call earlier this week, or was it last week, but there was a conversation that I had with somebody. It's like, well, I am pretty happy where I am now. To. It's my response. I'm like, that's amazing. But it's an understanding, another piece of how the universe works. And we're not immune to the laws of the universe. And what I mean by that is this. Everything that you see around you multiplies at all times. That's just the law of nature. If you leave a tree out, an oak tree, it's going to grow, it's going to drop acorns, it's going to multiply. There is never a point that the oak tree tells itself. I think I've grown enough. I'm like, I've grown. I don't need to give any more acorns to anybody else. I'm good. We do that. Yeah, right.
Liam
We do that. You're right. Until you say that, I'd never really thought about it, but it's funny. And I did get the mental image of acorn tree. Just go, I'm done. More acorns.
Emmanuel Pani
You know what? I'm done. Let's drop all these ones that we have. I'm not going to grow anymore. And so if you're listening to this and you're in a point of your life where you're comfortable. 1. I love that for you. Right? I'm genuinely excited. Should pat yourself on the back. Great work. My question for you is who do you serve by not growing anymore? And the next question is, who do you hurt by not growing anymore? Because if you have the desire, you have the ability, and that's a God given thing.

Liam
I can't remember who it was, but somebody once told me that, hey, you, you are either, you know, things are either growing or they're not. You know, they're going in the opposite direction because ultimately if, you know, if your business is growing and then you suddenly just go, hey, I'm not going to grow the business anymore. Well, actually it's in, it's probably shrinking in a way because at some stage a client is going to be lost. Or if you're not investing in your marketing, something's you're not going to get the bookings perhaps or you know, if you're just not quite paying attention as much as you, you perhaps need to, then you know, things, things will happen. So ultimately growth is, is both desirable from, from, you know, the, the things that come with it, but also it's necessary in my opinion. You really got to be, you've really got to be thinking about growth. So yeah, bringing it onto the next question is that obviously you've, you've had a lot of experience when it comes down to short term rentals. What, what is one of the biggest mindset shifts that you've had from the early days of starting STR to your mindset now? And what would you tell yourself back then?
Emmanuel Pani
One, it is not, is not as hard as I thought it was going to be. Two, by getting distracted I just extended the time. Three is really owning that perspective of I'm providing them service. I'm not asking people for anything. And I see that a lot with people that grow their hosting business is the idea of like how do I do this? And understand that as long as you come from a perspective of service and you understand that you don't get paid by people, you get paid through people and through the services that you provide for people. That would remove all the fear that I, that I had when it comes to growing my business. Number four ends in really understanding the power in being in the right rooms where I can share my feelings, my thoughts and what I'm going through. Also from the perspective, Liam, that for me what I've understood is that which I'm most embarrassed to share or that which I most don't want to share is that which you and I most have in common because we really are one consciousness experiencing itself through different integrations of life and understanding that anytime I choose not to pursue a goal, I'm giving up a life that is in. Within that goal. And so in really understanding what is the life that I want and what is the goal that matches that life and how can I just go after it? Because it's really like you're not helping anybody by playing small 100% and it's.
Liam
Easy to fall into that kind of like self doubt and those kind of things. We go, oh well, it might be an opportunity but it's too much of a risk. And what would you say to those people who have got self doubt or have got imposter syndrome because I, I see this all the time, that people's businesses get stuck at different levels and often it's not the bit, you know, the actual operations isn't that bad. You know, perhaps a little bit more marketing and stuff like that. But actually there's kind of a mindset of this is as big as it needs to be or, or comfort or imposter syndrome, hey, I shouldn't have this business, you know, like things like that. What would you say to these people?
Emmanuel Pani
So if your thought is this is as big as it needs to be, it's going to be so, so really you understanding that you are your thoughts create your life. Number two, what I realized, the more people I hang out with in this industry and I'm blessed with some friends that execute at a very, very high level, nobody's special, right? If you can see somebody else have something means that they're not more extraordinary than you are. It just means that they've accepted the extraordinary ideas that you have and accept that you have, period. Right? Nobody's special. And if you watch sports, that is the best analogy that you have in life in general. Because anytime somebody breaks a record, what happens right after that?
Liam
Somebody else pushes and breaks it, don't they?
Emmanuel Pani
So what does that mean? We just need to find the, find the fox, they find a rabbit to chase and then the moment that happens, we got it. And so one of the more dicey pieces of advices here is an understanding that if you're feeling yourself stuck or capped, understand that your paradigm is also reflected in the people that you have around you and your environment. Your environment is perfectly happy with how you are because there are a reflection of your thoughts and your current reality. So if you want to change your reality, sometimes part of your environment has to change.
Liam
I think I see that with. Well, I do see that with certainly the company which I've kept both in the past and now the people who you are surrounded by, they say the five people you surround yourself by will have the biggest impact on your life. And if those five people are very successful and pushing their businesses forward, then of course the chances are the conversations you have and the things you talk about is going to help your business in some way. And I'm a firm believer now more than ever that, I mean, there's almost 9 billion people on this planet. The chances that I'm running into a problem for the first time is pretty slim, right? Have all the different problems that can come up as a short term rental host or just in life in general. Somebody else has experienced this problem and they've found a way to navigate through. There's always a solution. And it's just seeing if you can a find that through research or if you know the people, then that gives you such an advantage. And when you say, you know, surround yourself by great people, those people have often had experiences who can navigate through things or if they don't know the answer, they're surrounded by people who may know the answer, which is the great thing. And this is your network, is your net worth, is what one of my mentors used to say.
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah. And it's also for me, another big component as you're growing out of your current situation is realizing where in the spectrum of awareness are you sharing your goals? And what I mean by that is if you're trying to get out of the masses and you have this moment of individualized ideas and goals, are you then expressing this new awareness up into somebody that is doing what you want to do, is done what you want to do, or are you sharing it down? Because if you're sharing it down back into the masses, what's going to happen is that people are going to tell you no, people are going to tell you you're crazy. People are going to tell you it's not possible. People are going to tell you things. So one of the big things that I started doing that has made a tremendous impact on my life is asking myself, is the person giving me advice living the life that I want?
Liam
I love that. Yeah.
Emmanuel Pani
90% of times people are not, I would say even 95% of the time.
Liam
Everyone'S got an opinion, right. And this is especially when, when people are giving me business. You know, the most business advice I get is from some of my old high school friends who all just work nine to five jobs. You know, that's, that's a lot of the business advice like, hey, what you should do is go and do this. I'm like, yeah, yeah, I agree. Love these people. Great people. Listen to it. Go, yeah, thanks for that idea, but don't do it. Do you know what I mean? Because exactly what you're saying there is that ultimately you, you've got, are they qualified to be giving you that advice? You know, I, I employ a accountant who gives me great tax advice, who is very to give me that advice. I'm going to listen to that person. But for business advice, that's a great mindset to think is, is that person where I want to be? I really think that's a great step.
Emmanuel Pani
And also understanding that at the beginning, your idea, it's at the weakest that it's ever been. And what I mean by that is like, look at it like, like a baby. When you had your baby, did you let it, did you walk out of the house with it the day after? Did anybody could come up and touch your baby? You have certain things, you're like, I need this baby to get strong enough and get its shot and get his immunity, get his thing, da da, da. Before the world touches it. Shit, man, just do the same. Your ideas are our babies at the beginning, be gentle with them, nurture them and shelter them from the world. And one of the big things that people need to start really paying more attention to, which has been also life changing for me, is understanding what my standards are and what I mean by standards. It's not just my life standards, but my emotional standards, my feeling standards and my result standards. So my emotional standards is what is the standard of emotions that I accept on a day to day basis? My feeling standard is what are the feelings that I accept on a day to day basis. And the best way for you to think about that is if I plug in a machine to your brain that gives us a transcript every single day. What does Liam think about during the day? Feeling wise and emotion wise, how many of those thoughts and feelings are conducive to your goals?
Liam
It's, it's interesting because until you analyze how you think and maybe writing down a thought diary of hey, what? Where is my mind for these, these hours of the day? You know, like just as a starting point of what am I thinking about and what results happened on that day based on these thoughts. Because if you're going, oh, actually I'm really worried about that guest review and I'm not sure how to reply to it and you're focusing so much on the micro and then going, then you look back and you look how you spend your time and you've written down, hey, you know, between 2 and 5, I was just worried about a review, thinking about the response. Obviously that isn't going to read the results that you need it to breed. So yeah, good point. So obviously a lot of what we're discussing is again, don't know what book this is from, but you've got the head in the cloud stuff and you've got the boots on the ground stuff and obviously what we're talking about is high level increase your mindset and increase the chances of getting to your goal, wherever that may be, maybe growing the business, maybe personal goals, whatever they be, maybe. But for those day to day demands of the business, we all get them right as, as hosts and for many people listening to this, how do you balance those day to day? God, I just got to pull my sleeves up and get this done with maintaining that long term vision and those goals. Is there any tips or nuggets of advice you can give us around that?
Emmanuel Pani
So for me, and I can just share what works for me, it's every day you do the things that matter to you most. Kind of. First, my gym time is a non negotiable, just for my own health. My morning time when I wake up and I read and the things that I feed myself are non negotiable. And then when stuff happens, stuff happens and that's okay. Another big element for me was bringing grace into my life. And what I mean by that, it's not a person, but it's just a sense of grace towards myself and understanding. Like, hey man, you've been this way for a long time and now we're starting to change. And we are changing, right? Just the idea of trying, I don't like that. Right? As Yoda would say, do or do not, there is no try. And so as you're changing, please understand that some of your habits have been there for 25, 30, 40 years. Some are ingrained generationally from your family. So as you're trying to break things, as you're breaking things, have some grace and then really have a way of looking at your life that takes you a couple thousand feet in the air on a regular basis where you're like, cool, I'm doing okay. Because the worst thing that happens is like you get in the weeds of things and you think you're drowning. Like, I had a call with a couple today, we don't make any money. I'm like, okay, show me the money's there. They just have all these systems and things where they keep 60% of the money goes into here, 60 goes into there. My guys just for a second reshuffle this around so that you have money so you can survive. And I understand that, like at the end of the day, you are like a very complicated plant. You need water, you need sunshine, you need good environment. And so anytime I feel myself not in a good environment headwise, I just don't take myself too seriously.
Liam
Right, Yeah, I, I completely agree with you. And the reason I'm smiling is because you're so right. You're just so right on this, especially having that grace. And kind of what I take that to mean is forgive yourself a little bit, you know, like you are, you are learning.
Emmanuel Pani
You're never, you're human.
Liam
Yeah. Constant state of flux. We're constantly changing. And your desires, your ability to change these habits might not be perfect first time. It's just keep trying. And one of the things which I was at the zoo the other day, I got a little boy who's 7 years old. We took his cousin and my, my boy and my other half, we all went to Colchester Zoo, which is big zoo in uk, and there was a thing about DNA with the, the different sort of. I don't know if it was chimpanzees or whatever it is, but it said, did you know you share 90, I think something like 98% of your DNA with a banana? And I'm just like, oh, no way. So actually I can forgive myself a little bit because I'm only 2% different from the banana, yet I achieve all this. And when we, we have something called the gap that we look at what's missing in life, you never, you never have a big plate of food and go, you know, you know, where's the source? Or where's the salt? Where's the, you know, like, we look for the gap in general in life, and you do it within business. You might have the car, the house, and you're like, hey, man, I want the holiday. You know, like this, this is, this is what I want. But if you could take your mind from five years ago, 10 years ago, 20 years ago, however long back you need to go, and then if that person was to be able to sit down and have a conversation with you today, how would that person perceive who you are today and what you've achieved? And I can only talk for myself, but that'd be like, oh, man, no way. That's, that's cool. Yet day to day, I still look at, oh, I want to be up there, I want to be up, you know, I want to, I want to push myself to that. And it's so easy to forget that. And that's what I take from your point of, of grace, you know, give yourself, cut yourself some slack, basically. Is that what you mean?
Emmanuel Pani
Yeah, yeah. And realize that your story will end well. Right. And is this expectant attitude, and those are two of the of the main feelings that I kind of live with, to be honest with you, is a feeling of gratitude for life in general. Like, I'm deeply, deeply grateful for just my experiences, my friend, my people, my lessons. Life is always happening for me and never to me. And that's like an ingrained life model.
Liam
Right.
Emmanuel Pani
And I'm always looking for the silver Lining, like, I love the silver lining. I love, like swimming in that little gap that is there. And the beauty is that it's always there, right? Because if there is, there is a polarity. Polarity is another law of the universe, right? If, if this floor is 10ft from the ceiling, the ceiling has to be 10ft from the floor, right? So if something is bad, there's has to be something good in it, period. And the other thing, man, is expectancy. So I don't have high expectations. That's different. I just expect the best. I expect the best of myself. I expect the best of situations. I expect the best of life. And I expect that I'll get what I want. Not because I'm special, just because, one, I don't know how to quit. And two, I just expect it because why not?
Liam
Yeah. Yeah, I love it. I love it. And at the end of the day, if things are hard, as you know, you know there's challenges going on behind and for, for you listening to this, if you've got a challenge going on and you're having to overcome it in the same way that I've got challenges going on, you may have challenges going on. Like, I always have that little part of me which goes, yeah, but if it was too easy, everybody would do it. And ultimately the harder it is, the less people who will do it, which will make it more of a achievement. When you, when you push through this, this barrier, which is, which is great. And that little burning fire certainly never leaves me. And I can hear that it's something which is within yet. And positivity brings people in. People are drawn to it. You know, I really do think people are so there's so much more we could dive into on this podcast. I feel like we just scratched the surface and although there's more we could go into, unfortunately that's all we've got time for today. But I think what's really important is for you to share. How can people come and find out more? How can people come and follow you and where should they go?
Emmanuel Pani

It's been. I've. I've really enjoyed this. I've really. I feel, I've learned a lot. I feel inspired. And I know if you're listening to this and you think somebody else would get value from this, please do share this with hosts, friends, family, anybody who need this. The. The information that we've discussed on this podcast to, to finish this off, then what is a motto or a mantra that sticks with you across your journey? And that just feels like a nice way to bring it to a close.
Emmanuel Pani
You know what's funny? You did mention that this question was coming up and I tried to, like, just be in the moment. And so I didn't think about it. But what comes to mind now after a conversation is to just really fall in love with the process. Just become obsessed with your craft, Become obsessed with the repetitions and yeah, I just love it, man. And just like, I find myself not feeling like I work a lot because all of my life is composed now of labors of love. And so I deeply love everything that I do. I love the podcast. I love the coaching. I love doing this with you. I love speaking on stage. I love coaching people and supporting people. I love growing my business. I love my investments. And it's not work because I'm like, I'm just having such a good time because my life is filled with labors of love, which I am deep, deeply passionate about. Like, everything I do, I just obsessed with it.
Liam

The Boostly Podcast: The STR Mindset Playbook – Overcoming Doubts and Growing Boldly
Episode Title: The STR Mindset Playbook: Overcoming Doubts and Growing Boldly
Release Date: December 23, 2024
Host: Mark Simpson
Guest: Emmanuel Pani, Founder of STR Secrets
In this enlightening episode of The Boostly Podcast, host Mark Simpson welcomes Emmanuel Pani, a seasoned expert in the short-term rental (STR) industry and co-host of the STR Secrets podcast. With over a decade of experience, Emmanuel shares his journey from humble beginnings to managing a 40-unit apartment complex and mentoring fellow hosts.
Emmanuel delves into the critical role mindset plays in the success of short-term rental businesses. He emphasizes that overcoming mental barriers is just as important as mastering operational tactics.
Key Points:
Understanding Human Nature: Emmanuel explains that our brains are wired to constantly generate wants and desires, which can either propel us forward or distract us from our goals.
"Your brain gets an idea. If your brain likes the idea, the idea becomes a want. If your brain really, really wants it, it becomes a goal." ([06:42])
Desire vs. Paradigm: He introduces the concept that a burning desire can challenge and ultimately change our existing paradigms—our current beliefs and habits.
"A strong enough desire will go to battle with your paradigm and say, hey, we may have access to a different kind of life." ([06:42])
Discipline as a Pillar: Maintaining discipline is essential once the initial surge of desire fades. Emmanuel highlights that discipline ensures sustained progress toward goals.
"Discipline is really being committed to a desire and continuing to fuel that desire once the initial decision goes away." ([11:06])
Liam and Emmanuel discuss the common pitfall of shiny object syndrome, where hosts chase new opportunities at the expense of their primary objectives.
Key Insights:
Staying Focused: Emmanuel advises hosts to prioritize their core goals and resist the temptation to diversify prematurely.
"Once you start getting the results you want, what's another thing that's going to come into play? It's going to be discipline." ([11:06])
Evaluating Opportunities: Before pursuing new ventures, assess whether they align with your long-term vision and goals.
"If you can think about something that you can create and obviously the bridge between that is then action, then you're moving in the right direction." ([16:13])
The environment and the people you surround yourself with significantly impact your mindset and business growth.
Discussion Points:
Networking with High Achievers: Emmanuel emphasizes the importance of associating with individuals who are already succeeding in their fields.
"Nobody's special. If you can see somebody else have something means that they're not more extraordinary than you are." ([23:06])
Changing Your Paradigm: To evolve, sometimes it's necessary to change your environment to reflect your new aspirations.
"Your environment is perfectly happy with how you are because there are a reflection of your thoughts and your current reality." ([23:49])
A significant portion of the conversation addresses the internal challenges hosts face, such as self-doubt and imposter syndrome.
Strategies Shared:
Belief in Your Ideas: Trust that your thoughts and desires can shape your reality.
"Your thoughts create your life." ([23:06])
Selective Listening: Be discerning about whose advice you take, focusing on guidance from those who have achieved what you aspire to.
"Is the person giving me advice living the life that I want?" ([26:48])
Maintaining a balance between managing daily tasks and keeping sight of long-term objectives is crucial for sustained growth.
Emmanuel’s Tips:
Prioritize Essential Activities: Identify and commit to daily actions that align with your most important goals.
"Every day you do the things that matter to you most." ([30:43])
Incorporate Grace and Flexibility: Allow yourself room to adapt and understand that changing long-standing habits takes time.
"Bring grace into your life. Understand that some of your habits have been there for 25, 30, 40 years." ([30:43])
Maintain a High-Level Perspective: Regularly take a step back to assess your progress and ensure you’re not getting bogged down by minor setbacks.
"Look at your life that takes you a couple thousand feet in the air on a regular basis." ([30:43])
As the episode concludes, Emmanuel shares his guiding mantra:
"Fall in love with the process. Just become obsessed with your craft." ([38:29])
He underscores the importance of passion and dedication, transforming daily tasks into enjoyable and fulfilling activities rather than viewing them as work.
