Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey talks with Jen Psaki about how his city is dealing with the deadly shooting by a federal ICE agent, his vehement opposition to how immigration agents are terrorizing communities, and the distortions the Trump administration is pushing even as Americans have seen multiple videos of the shooting.

Use on Monday.com so this morning we were reminded as I was watching, of the cruelty of the Trump administration. We all watched. Many of you watched. If you haven't watched it, we're gonna certainly play it. But we all watched a disturbing video of the horrific shooting in Minneapolis of a 37 year old woman by an ICE agent. As I just mentioned to Chris, we're about to speak with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Fry in just a moment. He's somebody who doesn't hold back ever and certainly always speaks passionately about the impacts of tragedies like this on his community. We're also continuing to follow the chaotic aftermath of the Trump administration's capture of the Venezuelan president and his wife and Trump's new threats against even more foreign countries, including a NATO ally, of course. And these two huge developing stories, they are very different and they may sound very different, but they're a reminder this administration is actively destabilizing, not just cities across the United States, communities across the United States. They are certainly doing that. They are also destroying our reputation in the world at the same time, all simultaneously. And we're going to speak to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about all of that in just a moment as well. But we're going to start tonight in Minneapolis where just to restate it again, this morning, one of Trump's federal immigration agents fatally shot a United States citizen. Local officials are certainly urging calm tonight. You've heard them say that all afternoon today. Many are specifically urging residents not to respond in any way that the Trump administration could use to justify cracking down on the city even more. And it's important, though, in this moment to talk about what preceded today. You see, for weeks now, ICE has been making arrests in the city, but this shooting took place less than 24 hours after the Trump administration announced a new, even larger scale surge of federal immigration agents. Kind of like the ones that we've seen and we've covered here in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago. It's also happening in a place where they are not strangers to tragedy. The people in Minneapolis are incredibly familiar with senseless acts of violence, whether it was the killing of Melissa Hortman and her husband in June, shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in August. And today, I was reminded of a very chilling fact. Today's shooting also happened less than a mile, just eight blocks away from where Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd in May of 2020. Just eight blocks away. Now, that killing, as we all remember, led to a protest movement not just in Minneapolis, but all across the country and all across the world. It also led to riots, which were then weaponized by the first Trump administration to crack down on protesters. Now, despite this long history of tragedy and heartache that this city has gone through, despite the horrific video from this morning, Trump and his administration are adding fuel to the fire. That's how they're approaching this. But before I show you just how they are trying to spin this shooting, I want to show you the video of what happened. And you may have already seen it again, but if you haven't, I should just warn you, it's incredibly disturbing and probably still very important to watch. I should also state loud and clear that this is less than 24 hours old. We do not know exactly what happened leading up to this shooting, but we do know that there were a lot of witnesses in the neighborhood, a number of whom have spoken to local media. One eyewitness told Minnesota Public Radio that the whole thing started when an ICE vehicle got stuck in a snowbank. Other ICE vehicles began arriving. DHS has since said that those vehicles were there to help the stuck vehicle, but neighbors thought they were witnessing an ICE enforcement action. So people showed up and they started blowing whistles, trying to warn undocumented neighbors about ICE's presence. And many of today's witnesses say that those whistles were why they came to the area where today's shooting happened to begin with. Those whistles also appear to be why we have so many different angles of video of today's shootings. This is part of the citizen activism that we're seeing across the country. Not sometimes in the face of tragedy, but also just also when there's ICE actions in communities. Again, the video you're about to see is very graphic, but pay attention to the victim's reddish purple Honda Pilot suv. You can see it is stationary in the road right there. And there's already an ICE officer outside of her vehicle. When two additional areas ICE agents arrive, she tries to wave them by, but they tell her to get out of the effing car and try to open her door. You can see that happening right now. Her vehicle reverses and when it moves forward, three shots are fired. The vehicle then proceeds to crash into another car down the street. And to be clear, we don't know if what, if anything proceeded the start of the videos we've seen, and I'm not a crime scene analyst by any means, but there is a lot we can see with our own eyes here. And this video appears to show that the agent responsible for killing the victim continued shooting into the driver's seat of that vehicle after the vehicle appeared to be moving away from him. And that's chilling to watch. In the immediate aftermath of that shooting, that agent responsible for firing those shots does not appear in any great hurry to get to the vehicle. Once it had crashed, he walked to it. And once he had apparently seen the vehicle and presumably the victim he shot, he again walked back again without much apparent urgency to ask his fellow officers to call 911 as protesters confronted him.

Local authorities say they got the 911 call at around 9:30am local time. They say CPR was performed on the scene, but the victim was ultimately taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. And the victim has since been identified as a 37 year old twin Cities resident named Renee Nicole Good. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the victim's mother responded to the news of the shooting by saying, Renee was one of the kindest people I've ever known. She was extremely compassionate. She's taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being. Now, I wanted to make sure you saw this incident with your own eyes before you heard how the Trump administration is spinning it. Because within hours of today's shooting, the spokesperson for DHS, Trisha McLaughlin, yes, she's quite a person, was saying definitively that, that the victim of today's shooting had, quote, weaponized her vehicle attempting to, quote, kill an ICE agent, an act she called domestic terrorism. Now, her boss, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, just in case you thought Trisha was rogue, she was not. Quickly said the same.
DHS Official (Trisha McLaughlin or Kristi Noem)
It was an act of domestic terrorism. What happened was our ICE officers were out in enforcement action. They got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather, that is in Minneapolis. They were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them. And those surrounding and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively, shot to protect himself and the people around him. And my understanding is that she was hit and is deceased.
Jen Psaki
At a press conference later tonight, Noem said she will ask the Department of Justice to prosecute the use of vehicles to block immigration enforcement operations as domestic terrorism. President Trump himself described the victim as having, quote, violently, willfully and viciously run over an ICE officer. We just all saw the video there. Even though it is unclear from the video if her car actually even hits the officer in question. Trump and his administration are trying to justify today's shooting by claiming that the victim, 37 year old Renee Nicole Goode, was a violent domestic terrorist. In their words, they're trying to convince people out there that she was a dangerous agitator and that ICE only shot her in self defense. Now, when a reporter told Nicole's mother about that narrative, can you imagine this? Her mother said, quote, that's so stupid. She said that her daughter was probably just terrified. But the thing is, the domestic terrorist narrative is the one that the Trump and his administration are pushing tonight. They're going to continue pushing it as peaceful protests continue to grow in Minneapolis tonight and as this incident becomes a national flashpoint. Local leaders though, are resoundingly rejecting the Trump administration's narrative. Here, here was Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Fry earlier today. Fair warning, he uses some curse words very appropriately here.
Jacob Frey
They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bullshit. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying. There's little I can say again that'll make this situation better. But I do have a message for our community, for our city, and I have a message for ice2ice, get the fuck out of Minneapolis.
Jen Psaki
Very well stated there. Joining me now is the mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Fry. I've been thinking today, as so many of us have been, about the city of Minneapolis. And the last time we spoke it was in the wake of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School. And many people in the community knew Melissa Hortman and her husband. And I just can't imagine what the city has been going through over the last six months. And you've been leading it. So help us. First just understand. I know you've been spending time with people in the community. How is the community doing tonight?
Jacob Frey
You gotta understand that obviously Minneapolis has been through so much, not just over the last year, but over the last five. But we are tough, we are strong, we are resilient. We'll get knocked down seven times, but we get back up eight. And when somebody comes for one of us, they're coming for all of us. And that's exactly what is happening here. You've got these thousands of ICE agents that are coming in not for safety reasons, not for fighting crime. They're coming in to terrorize our communities. And what you see right now, and I think what you'll continue to see throughout the presence of isis, we're going to grin down this bear. We're going to fight for justice. We're going to do everything possible that we can to stand up for each other, and we're also going to do it peacefully. We understand that right now the Trump administration is looking for any excuse whatsoever to deploy the military, an occupying force, even more ICE agents or border control. We're not going to give them that excuse. Of course, we speak out, we express our First Amendment rights, we stand up for our neighbors. And, and I think we all realize right now, both in our city administration, but throughout our entire residency, we all know what's at stake.
Jen Psaki
We just showed some images of what appear to be large scale peaceful protests tonight. In response, we have reporters on the ground, of course, covering them. Tell us what the scale of those are. What are you hearing about what's happening on the ground? How did they originate?
Jacob Frey
Well, look, I won't speak to the work that those that have been organizing is doing right now. I won't speak to that. What I will say is there is a broad message that is going out, and that message is pretty clear, which is don't take the bait. We'll stand up for justice. We'll stand up for what is right. And we also recognize what the Trump administration is trying to do here, because it appears that they wanted a moment like this. The chief and I have been saying, not just privately, but publicly, for over a month, that something like this was gonna happen. Either a civilian resident, a police officer, or even an ICE agent was gonna get shot, killed, or very badly injured. And look, it happened. And no, it did not happen because our community member is a domestic terrorist. It didn't happen because they went through what appeared to be like a three or a four. That's the furthest thing from any intentional use of force that I could possibly imagine. This happened because the way that ICE is conducting themselves is not constitutional. This happened because you got people that are coming into our city tearing apart communities, really hurting a whole lot of Small and local businesses dragging pregnant women through the street and then detaining people simply because they look Somali or look Latino. And so to the extent you've got people that want to document the horrific stuff and the unconstitutional conduct that is taking place, yeah, I get it. We should be adding a little bit of sunlight to disinfect what's going on with this federal administration. And I hope that the call here is not just to Minneapolis residents, but anybody who's watching throughout the country, Republican or Democrat. This is about the endurance of our republic right now. This is about having the courage of our convictions to say, you know what? This is not who we are, to find those better angels to do right by our society and to make sure that when people come for our immigrant community, our country's made up of immigrants, and we stand by them.
Jen Psaki
We wouldn't know what happened today without citizen activism and without citizens taking recording from many angles. It's kind of incredible. That's how we know how many of these things happen. You called the Trump administration's portrayal of what happened today bs. I think I just tried to outline why it's BS Again, we showed the video. I think a lot of people watching have watched this video. This is your community. I mean, what stuck out most to you, specifically when you watched that video this morning?
Jacob Frey
Well, I won't preempt the investigation that is gonna take place in part through the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. But look, I got two eyes. I saw video that all of you saw as well. The notion that this was domestic terrorism is garbage. It's bs. It's whatever other superlative you want to attach, but that ain't a factual or valid narrative, and we should all just be acknowledging, you know, the truth. The truth matters here. And our call has been twofold. Our call has been, first, you know, ice get out of our city. Second, to our community members. You know, this is our moment to meet a whole lot of hate with a whole lot of love. This is our moment to do everything possible that we're pushing for justice when you got an administration that is seemingly trying to deny it. This is our moment to show who we can be right now, and I'm confident that we can do so peacefully. I'm confident that we can express those First Amendment rights without hurting each other or the communities that have been built up so beautifully over the last several years. And, I mean, I'm optimistic about this city. And at the same time, we're devastated for the family, we're devastated for the victim, and of course, our City's reeling.
Jen Psaki
We still. The victim here is such an important part of this story. Of course, we still know very little about. We know her name is Renee Nicole Goode and that she was 37 years old. I heard the lieutenant governor say she had a six year old child. Have you learned more about her?
Jacob Frey
I have not learned enough about her yet. We are in the process. I got my staff, you know, looking for a contact and obviously, look, we got to be wrapping our arms around the family, around Rene's friends. We gotta be doing everything possible right now to show them the kind of love that they deserve because they do not deserve this.
Jen Psaki
There have beeni mentioned this a little bit in the opening and we've covered this on this show a bit. These kind of incredible efforts in cities like Minneapolis and Los Angeles and Chicago of citizen activism, basically warning people about ICE operations, trying to keep people, community members safe. Reportedly, there was an effort like that happening in this community today with whistles being blown. People were saying they were arriving to the community because of that. Have you learned any more about whether that was why she was there?
Jacob Frey
I don't know enough information to comment on that yet. I certainly wouldn't be surprised that she was standing up for her neighbors because from the little that I have learned about her, that is something that she would do on a very regular basis. I wouldn't be surprised when any of the residents throughout our city would say, you know what? We care about you. Regardless of where you come from, regardless of what zip code you grew up in, you come to Minneapolis, you contribute greatly to this city, you start small and local businesses, hey, you're part of Minneapolis and you make it a better place. And that's one of the most frustrating things that we've seen from these ICE agents is again, they are not here to drive down crime or create safety. By the way, we have worked with a number of different federal agencies and departments in the past to significantly drive down crime. Crime in virtually every category in virtually every neighborhood throughout the city of Minneapolis is down pretty substantially right now. And so if we're talking about safety, we're on board. That's not what this is about. This is about terrorizing people. If they cared about safety, they wouldn't be going after the dad that just dropped his kids off at daycare, is about to go work a 12 hour shift who happens to be from Somalia or Ecuador. They'd be focused on violent criminals that do horrific things. And so, you know, as Democrats, we gotta be very clear eyed. We are anti crime, we are pro safety. We're also pro abiding by the Constitution, which this administration is not doing.
Jen Psaki
And the majority of people they're deporting through some of these processes don't have criminal records, which is important to continue to restate. Let me ask you about the accountability, because I know you've said, ice, get out of my city. I think other mayors like yourself feel that way. And when you're in the wake of a tragedy like this morning, it's so understandable to hear that. I think a lot of people feel that your chief of police said tonight that the investigation into this shooting will be handled jointly by the FBI and state law enforcement. We're just in this crazy period of time. I don't have to tell you, you've been speaking out about this, where you have the President of the United States, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, the attorney general. They are all essentially spewing lies about what happened this morning. What is your expectation about whether the FBI is going to handle this investigation with the level of thoroughness and fairness that it warrants?
Jacob Frey
My understanding is that the investigation will be conducted both by the FBI, but also the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at the state level. And look, I don't think anybody knows fully what to expect from this administration, and I'm not going to venture a guess at this point. But what I will say is that I believe my own eyes. I will say that the way that our law enforcement officers here in Minnesota, in Minneapolis, are conducting is going to be fair and righteous. I mean, we had two cops that were on the scene in a minimal amount of time. They were in the ambulance with the victim on the way to the hospital. We've done a lot of work over these last five years to improve our police department to be the change. And right now we've got officers that have both stayed and that are coming on board that want to be an example for so many others to follow. We've got immigrant communities more and more that are saying, hey, I trust the Minneapolis Police Department. You know who I don't trust? These ICE agents that are coming in with black vests, that are unmarked, that aren't taking responsibility for their own actions. This is yet another instance of it, and sadly, it's not unexpected. The chief and I have been talking about this for over a month, that this was a strong likelihood or a possibility, and tragically it happened. The way they're behaving is reckless. It's not constitutional, and everybody should be speaking out about it.
Jen Psaki
We will certainly continue to do that. And I know in days like this there is nothing that eases people's pain. But I'm sure having somebody who's leading their city speaking out is powerful. Unedited, too, I think is important. Mayor Jacob Fry, thank you so much for joining me.
Jacob Frey
Thank you.
Jen Psaki
We have to sneak in a quick break here, but coming up, how do you lead the opposition party when an administration is behaving this lawlessly at home and abroad? This is a question we are constantly grappling with here. My conversation with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is coming up. After a very quick break.

Joining me now is Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Leader Schumer, thank you for being here with me on a very, very busy news day. There's a lot to get to. I just wanted to start, though, of course, course, with the horrific shooting we saw in Minneapolis this morning. I think we have all watched that video really with horror so many times. I know you have seen it. I just want to start by getting your reaction to what you were thinking about when you watched that video.
Chuck Schumer
It's it's horrific. And when you hear the lady screaming, saying, what the f are you doing? And you see what happened, it's. You feel like a punch in the stomach. What the hell is going on here? And the bottom line is very simple, Jen. We should not have ICE agents patrolling our streets. They're not needed. They create chaos and they even create deaths. The mayor of Minneapolis didn't want them. So many other cities didn't. This is sort of Trump strutting around. But they don't belong in our cities, plain and simple. We need a full investigation here as to what happened.
Jen Psaki
I saw you called for that. Others have called for that. Of course, that makes sense. Anyone who's watched that video wants that to happen. We also saw today the Department of Homeland Security lie about what happened. We saw the President of the United States lie about what happened. This is so different from what we have seen from presidents of both parties for so many decades. And I can't believe we have to ask this question, but do you trust that the FBI, do you trust them to handle the oversight of this investigation?
Chuck Schumer
No. You know, there are a lot of good people in the FBI who have been there for years and are, in a sense, civil servants. They're non political. Trump has changed the FBI and many of our other judicial agencies into attack dogs for him. No one has any faith in them. No one has any trust in them. And this is, you know, one of the. There are so many horrible things happening in America, Jen, but we always had norms in this country. As you mentioned, previous presidents, Democrat, Republican, would not come to this kind of lying to protect themselves. And when you destroy those norms, you really destroy what the essence of America has always been. And it is just angering, perturbing, confounding. You just want to say, God damn them.
Jen Psaki
You've been outspoken and critical of ice, and obviously they've been very active in New York as well, your home state. But today, in response to this shooting, Senator Chris Murphy said that Senate Democrats should really cannot vote for a DHS budget that doesn't restrain the growing lawlessness of. Of this agency. We're obviously, their budget, as you all know, has increased massively over the course of the last year. Are we at that point? I mean, is he right? Should Democrats vote against a DHS budget that doesn't meaningfully restrain ice?
Chuck Schumer
Well, well, first, Chris Murphy is on the appropriation committee and head of a powerful subcommittee that has jurisdiction. They haven't come. They haven't come to this issue yet, debating the DHS budget. But I think there'll be a very. That will be one of the issues that will really be discussed. I don't want to prejudge what they're going to say or do, but I do believe that there will be a very vigorous discussion about this.
Jen Psaki
What do you think, though, as in, I know you're the leader, but as an individual senator as well, do you think there should be accountability before their budget is supported?
Chuck Schumer
Well, look, I'm appalled by what they do. I have repeatedly voted for many different restrictions on ICE and the FBI. And I believe that this, the committee will consider it in a very serious way.
Jen Psaki
But let's turn to Venezuela. There is quite a split screen right now, and a very not a good one for the Trump administration. There is chaos and mourning happening in Minneapolis, and there is obviously a tremendous amount of chaos happening around the operation in Venezuela. President Trump himself, as you know and everybody watching knows and members of his administration are talking openly about escalating into other countries. You've now sat in two briefings. You expressed concern yesterday. Is that what you're preparing for? Is that what people watching should be preparing for them escalating into other countries with military action?
Chuck Schumer
Look, I've sat through two classified briefings and I've asked them a whole lot of questions. How many troops are you going to want there? I asked them, how long will it take? How much will it cost? I asked them, do they have plans to use military action in Colombia, in Mexico, in Cuba, even in Greenland, of all places. I cannot tell you their exact answers because it was a classified briefing. But I can tell you this. It was extremely unsatisfying and unnerving to hear their answers. I'll tell you one other thing. They have no plan for Venezuela. They did step one, take out Maduro. They don't know of steps two, three, four, five, six. The people, the vice president who they put in charge is known as corrupt, is known as dishonest, and is known as hating the United States. She thinks the CIA killed one of her family members. And so I think we're on the steps to an endless war. Trump campaigned, Jan, against endless war in Iraq. And now he is not just bumbling into it, he's heading full steam ahead into it. And it's going to be terrible for the American people. And one more point, when you contrast this with what people want him to do, what we Democrats are focused on doing, which is reducing the costs. We had a great hearing today with Elizabeth Warren on reducing housing costs, reducing the cost of health insurance, reducing the Cost of energy, reducing the cost of groceries, reducing the cost of so much else. And here he is in these military adventurism down in South America. It is so totally against what the American people want. Then he says when he talked to the Republican senators, I don't know what the American people want. Well, he is in such a damn bubble. He has no understanding of what the average person is going through and what the average person wants us to do.
Jen Psaki
No question. And I want to ask you about all of that. I have only one more question on Venezuela for you, which is just about. You've expressed confidence in a war powers resolution passing the Senate, which I will just say I've been through this a lot. That would be a big step. This does not always happen at all. You've also said around the briefing today that there was bipartisan concern during today's briefing. As there as there should be. Given what we're seeing in order, though, even if the Senate resolution passes, Trump, I would expect you, tell me if I'm wrong here, would veto it. Is there enough Republican support you think could be built to override? That would require two thirds of the.
Chuck Schumer
Senate, of course, that, you know, as the Americans are learning about this and they learn more and more about it, the outrage at what Trump is doing is going to grow and grow and grow. And it's a little bit like the Epstein files. At first Trump tried to resist and said, I'm not going to do it. But the outrage in the country, not just from Democrats, but from the right wing. And remember, Endless War was one of the biggest ways he campaigned to win right wing votes along with Epstein files. And they turned against him because they saw he was. He broke his promises to them, he lied to them and because he's so against what they want. So if we keep pushing at this and Senator Kaine and I are going to keep pushing more resolutions, I think we can get Republicans to vote for us. Tomorrow would be a great step in the Senate. We need two more votes. We have two Rand Paul and Murkowski. We have two more Republican votes. We win in the Senate and then the pressure on Republicans goes over to the House.
Jen Psaki
Yeah, I just wanted to raise this. I think it's important for people out there to understand what it would require and the need to keep pressing. Let me ask you about where pressing and pressure actually really worked. I mean, the House is reportedly scheduled. You tell me if you know more. You probably do know more about when it's actually going to happen to vote on the discharge petition. This week on health care, we saw with the Epstein files that Leader Thune initially had no real interest, at least publicly, in bringing it up for a vote until it passed the House nearly unanimously. So if this passes the House, what's your sense, you know, what it's like to whip votes on what kind of margin would be required out of the Senate to put that necessary pressure on Thune to force him to bring it up for a vote in the Senate?
Chuck Schumer
Well, if we get every Democrat voting for it in the Senate, we need 13 Republicans in the House. But let me just say this. The pressure is going to build. And you're seeing, you're seeing Republicans realizing that Trump is the wrong is going to hurt them politically to follow. It's sort of like Thelma and Louise over the cliff. And so we're beginning to see ruptures. For a year, they went along with anything Trump wanted. A lot of them, when they talk to me privately on the floor, they know he's a disaster for them substantively and politically, but they're afraid to buck him. We're beginning to see signs in the areas you mentioned on health care with a few Republicans in the House, on the Epstein file, with all the Republicans, and maybe here, too, on what the horrors of what they're doing, the craziness, the stupidity of what they're doing in Venezuela be the same.
Jen Psaki
This leads me to, I mean, there are a lot the Senate Democrats, including you, of course, you've helped lead it, have your own legislative agenda that you've put out there to push back on this. Republicans dismissal of affordability. And it's focused on five health care, energy, housing, groceries and tariffs. These all seem like issues that Republicans, politically and morally too, should be with you on, given where the public is. But, but talk to me about how you can pursue that agenda while still in the minority. Do you think you could get support from Republicans, or is this really about informing the public of what's at stake in the elections?
Chuck Schumer
You know, Abe Lincoln said it, Jen, public sentiment is everything. As they begin to feel the heat. They were shaken up by the elections in November, in 2025, where Democrats won all over the place, even in places we didn't expect, not just all over the country, even in upstate Republican New York, Democrats won seats we had never won before. And public sentiment is everything. The public is seeing more and more how bad Trump is for them, how he lied to them, how he betrayed them. And I think that is going to mount and help us win some more fights in 2026 elections.
Jen Psaki
Have consequences. Leader Chuck Schumer, I hope when it's slower news day, I hope you'll come back and we can talk about the Senate and how you're planning to win that back. Thanks so much for joining me.
Chuck Schumer
Yeah, we're going to take back the Senate. Jen. Next time I come on, I'll talk to you and give you the details.
Jen Psaki
Sounds good. Coming up, the Trump administration's response to what happened in Minneapolis today was yet another reminder that you cannot trust a single word that comes out of these people's mouths. And with that in mind, I'm going to step in and answer some questions from the press briefing today. When we come back.

We were reminded today that even in the face of tragedy, the Trump administration will lie like they breathe. In the after immediate aftermath of the horrific killing of Renee Good today in Minneapolis, a top DHS official, Trisha McLaughlin, declared that good was attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them, an act of domestic terrorism. Now, of course, as we've been talking about through the course of the show, multiple videos and multiple eyewitness accounts quickly contradicted that version of what happened. But the Trump administration ran with that Narrative anyway, one after the other, all of them lied because that is what they do. And with that in mind, Trump's press secretary held the first White House press briefing of the new year. So in the interest of accurate information as opposed to Trump spin, let's take a couple of those questions. Let's start with Jackie Heinrich from Fox.

News following up on Greenland.

Why not rule out taking it by military force?
Jen Psaki
I mean, Jackie, Trump and his administration have in fact gone out of their way to not rule out taking Greenland by military force. And why won't they rule it out? I mean, maybe it's because of oil and resources. Maybe it's because of was Nancy Pelosi suggested to me last night that it would be a favorite of Vladimir Putin. Maybe he wants to just take a wrecking ball to NATO or maybe he'd just like to distract us from the Epstein files or people's health care costs skyrocketing or unpopularity. Many options here. Okay, Jeff Mason from Reuters.
Chuck Schumer
I remember asking the president at the.
Jake Sullivan
Beginning of his term if he was committed to Article 5 in NATO and he said yes.
Jen Psaki
Has his stance on NATO or his.
Jacob Frey
Commitment to NATO changed?
Jen Psaki
Jeff, did you ever really believe Donald Trump was committed to keeping NATO together? He has repeatedly attacked NATO. I mean, today he even publicly doubted NATO's value to the United States. And of course, let's not forget he's currently floating using military force to take control over a self governing territory of a NATO ally. If anything, his disdain for NATO has kind of skyrocketed or at least become more overt. Okay. KELLY WRIGHT, CBN.

As you know, there's some 8 million Venezuelans here, some of them celebrating in the streets. There are Venezuelans on the ground who are concerned about their safety. What does the Trump administration, what is it doing to actually help people in Venezuela understand that they will be secure throughout this transition?
Jen Psaki
I mean, the Trump administration is not concerned about the people of Venezuela. They are concerned about Venezuela's oil. The New York Times is reporting that Venezuela's interim leader appears to have declared a 90 day state of emergency that gives broad powers to security forces to immediately search and capture anyone who supports the armed attack of the United States and the removal of Maduro. Some Venezuelans have been interrogated, had phone searched and even detained. That is who the Trump administration is working with. And why? Because Trump clearly cares more about keeping oil and power than the well being and freedom of the people of the Venezuelan people. Okay. Jake Sullivan is the former White House national Security advisor and he joins me next. So Yesterday, Trump posted that the United States will be taking oil from Venezuela to sell and that he will control the money from those sales. Yeah, lots of questions there. Now, today, the president followed that up by saying that Venezuela will buy, quote, only American products with money they make from a US Oil deal. Today, the US Also intercepted a pair of oil tankers tied to Venezuela, including one registered under the Russian flag. Is there really, really any more mystery as to what this is all about? Oil keeps coming up, everyone. There you go. Joining me now is Jake Sullivan, former national Security Adviser to President Biden and co host of the excellent Long Game podcast. Okay, Jake, so many things to ask you about, but I just want to start with this oil question. I mean, Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth briefed members of Congress today, and one, they talked about a lot of things, but one of the first steps they talked about was selling Venezuelan oil. So we have, in the last 24 hours, the administration is laying claim to about 30 to 50 million barrels of oil. They said they're going to continue seizing tankers linked to Venezuela. They said they'll control oil indefinitely. Trump has mused about reimbursing oil companies. There's a lot. I probably missed some things, but, I mean, there's tons of legal questions, corruption questions, who controls it. But another big one to me is like, to what end? What sticks out to you here about all of this?
Jake Sullivan
Well, you know, it's been a really kind of dizzying and disorienting last several days, Jen, but it boils down to something pretty simple. The United States bombed another country to replace one dictator with another dictator so that that new dictator would allow multinational corporations to come into Venezuela and be able to extract oil. And the crazy thing, Jen, is that American oil companies don't even really want to go to Venezuel Venezuela to drill for oil. So Trump has to go beyond and actually pay money to them, take taxpayer money, give it to them so that they'll go and drill. And to me, it is the exact opposite of America first to pay oil companies to drill in Venezuela rather than, say, drilling in, I don't know, Texas or Alaska. But at the end of the day, this is just straight up straightforward, an act of aggression against another country for purposes of trying to seize their oil to absolutely no tangible benefit to the people of the United States. You might say, well, it's going to mean cheaper oil. But a critical point here, Jen, is that the only way oil companies are actually going to go try to get more oil from Venezuela is if the Oil price is higher than it is today, not lower. So none of this makes any sense. If you care about the well being and welfare of the American people, and you've already made the point that it makes no sense with respect to the welfare of the Venezuelan people. So this appears to be another just simple act of flamboyant violence by President Trump to no particularly positive end.
Jen Psaki
They've also talked a big question out there. Is this boots on the ground question? This is a phrasing I feel like I always avoided saying unless I was told I could say it in government. I talked to Senator Mark Warner about this last night too, because in addition to the oil piece, these vault have been talking about ensuring access to new markets, to transitioning the new government, all of these things that are big, enormous things. Members of his cabinet, I should say, have tried to water this down. But you've been a part of these conversations about what is required in terms of military resources to, you know, surround Venezuela, to seize oil tankers, to secure oil facilities, to transition a new government. Can they really do that without boots on the ground? Is it even possible?
Jake Sullivan
Look, what we have here is basically an occupation by joystick or an occupation by remote control, essentially saying to this new dictator, the head of the same old corrupt cabal that's been running Venezuela for all these years, either do what we tell you to do or else. Now, if all they're asking for is some barrels of oil, okay, maybe they can get those. We've talked about how that's not really going to benefit ordinary Americans in any real way. If what they're talking about is actually trying to produce a real outcome in Venezuela that increases stability, advances democracy, then I do not believe just sitting a bunch of gunships off the coast of Venezuela is going to achieve that. And frankly, in his more honest moments, you see Secretary Rubio basically shrugging his shoulders and saying, yeah, there's only so much we can do on the whole democratic transition thing, because without boots on the ground, you are limited in what you can accomplish. But at the same time, having a flotilla with 15,000 service members and a massive number of ships and planes every single day, that is adding cost and expense money that could be invested here in the United States is instead being invested in this continued effort basically to get Exxon and Conoco and other companies sweetheart deals in Venezuela, it just makes no sense from the point of view of the United States. And for a president who has said he cares about the American people first and foremost, I do not see how a decision to quote, run Venezuela as opposed to run America is really going to serve this country well.
Jen Psaki
Jake Sullivan, I always learn when I talk to you. We always need more time. Thank you as always, for joining me. We've got to sneak in a quick break, but Lawrence is standing by. We'll be right back. Episode: 'The truth matters here': Minneapolis mayor rejects Trump narrative on deadly ICE shooting
Date: January 8, 2026
Host: Jen Psaki, MS NOW
This episode tackles two headline stories: the deadly ICE shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Goode amid a federal surge of immigration enforcement, and the broader destabilizing actions of the Trump administration at home and abroad, including aggressive escalations in Venezuela. Jen Psaki anchors a series of interviews and analyses that focus on the reality behind official White House narratives, speaking with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and former White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. The episode is marked by Jen Psaki’s urgent, direct tone and her guests’ emotional, candid responses. The dialogue reflects a city and political establishment confronting federal actions they describe as destabilizing, unconstitutional, and dishonest.
This episode provides a comprehensive, unvarnished account of the deadly ICE shooting in Minneapolis, including context, conflicting narratives, and the passionate, unfiltered responses of local leaders and national Democrats. It also exposes the Trump administration’s pattern of false public statements and contrasts that with the evidence at hand, while tying threads between domestic repression and foreign adventurism. The interviews highlight the atmosphere of mistrust, grief, and resistance in Minneapolis, and the broader concern over America’s democratic norms and international standing.
Listeners come away informed on the facts, armed with insights from the ground, and tuned to the high-stakes debate about justice, truth, and accountability in a moment of national crisis.
