What's going on, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Bryce cover podcast. I'm Bryce, and today we're in Luke chapter six. But before we get into it, I need my lovely elf hand. Come help me, elf. Come here. All right, Dylan, we'll go with this one. I know what this one is. You know what this one is? All right, I'm gonna open it. I'm assuming this is another sign. Merry Christmas, Bryce. It is.
We burned it. Thank you.
It's a sign of Jesus that says, I saw that.
Thank you. I appreciate this. This was a really sweet gift. You know what? This is a good reminder because he sees everything. So thank you. Thank you for getting that. I appreciate that. Thank you so much. Well, just as always, we're going to get into the word of God today. We're going to be in Luke chapter six. If you want to open your Bibles, I'm super pumped. We're starting off with Jesus being the Lord of the Sabbath. On a Sabbath while he was going through the grain fields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing their hands together. But some of the Pharisees said why are you doing what's not lawful on the Sabbath? And Jesus said, have you not read what David did when he was hungry? Don't you remember David when he was hungry? He entered the house of God and took the bread of presence which is not lawful for anyone but the priest to eat. And he gave it to the ones who were with him. And he says, the Son of Man is Lord. On the Sabbath.
God's not offended by his disciples actions. Jesus says, I design the Sabbath to be with me. They're with me. I am not offended by them. I'm not offended by their actions. And he says on another Sabbath he entered a synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there, his right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath so they might find a reason to accuse him. But he knew their thoughts. And he said to them with the he said to the man with the wither hand, so he knew that the fair the Pharisees were trying to catch him doing something on the Sabbath. Again he said, come and stand here. To the man with a withered hand he says, I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or destroy it? And after looking around at them, he all said to them, stretch out your hand. He did so and the hand was restored. But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus. What is an encouragement we can take from this passage? There is never a wrong day to do something good. There's never a wrong day to serve someone or love someone. There's never a wrong day to glorify God. In these days he went out on the mountain to pray. And all night he continued in prayer to God. And when the day came, he called his disciples and chose from the twelve, whom he named apostles. Simon, who he named Peter and Andrew, his brothers James and John and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called a zealot, and Judas the son of James and and Judas Iscariot, who became the traitor. He names the twelve disciples or in this passage references these twelve apostles.
Then Jesus ministers To a great crowd. This is so Fire. He came down with them and stood on a level place with a great crowd. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured, and all the crowd sought to teach them. And now we're about to see a summary of the Beatitudes here. Like we've seen in Matthew chapter five. It's here in Luke chapter six. He lifted up his eyes on the disciples and says, blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry, now you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. For behold, your reward is great in heaven, for so their fathers did to those prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you when all people speak well of you, so their fathers did to the false prophets. You know what these woes are? These woes are woe to you when you're satisfied with everything but God. All of these woes are coming from people who are satisfied with themselves more than they are God. Oh, you're satisfied with your money more than you are God. Okay, what do you. You got what you wanted. Oh, you're satisfied with. With. With what? The things you could do. Okay, you're gonna be hungry one day. You're gonna be starving for the things of God. And then he says, but I say to you, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you and pray for those who abuse you. You know, Jesus was the most prime example of loving your enemies. You and I, because we're born into this sinful, wicked world, are enemies of God. You and I are enemies of God. But God so desperately loved us. He desired us not to be enemies of him anymore.
So he died for us. He took on death something so out of the ordinary for God's nature. He took on death and died for us because he cared about us and loved us enough to do so.
The primest example of loving your enemies, to the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other one. And the one who takes away your cloak, give him the other one. Don't return evil for evil is what Jesus says, basically, kill him with kindness. Don't return evil for evil. You always hear an eye for an eye. Nowadays it's like, you hit me, I'm gonna hit you. Hit me. I'm gonna hit you harder. No, no, no. You hit me, I'm gonna turn the other cheek. I'm gonna serve you and love you and pray for you.
Personally. You want to know what the hardest thing has been for me? There are so many people in the world that don't know Bryce personally. And so they make judgments and statements about me. They. They say awful things about me. And one of the hardest things for me.
Is to not fight back, to not try to plead my case. Oh, no, no, no, you got that wrong. And you said this, and you said that Jesus was the most misunderstood guy on the gather. The number one persecution Jesus faced was being misunderstood.
And so I have to constantly practice this thing where I'm not only praying for my enemies, but I'm blessing them. Blessing their families, blessing their ministries, blessing this, blessing that. We have to keep that posture.
He says, even sinners love those who love them. In verse 32.
How easy is it to just love someone that does something good for you? It's another challenge where you have to love someone who stabs you in the back. Jesus says in Luke 6:35, but love your enemies and do good and lend, expecting nothing in return. And your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father's mercy, it's merciful. Jesus makes this super bold statement here. He says, love them and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Isn't that the love of God dying for people, even though he knew that they would never love him back? Be merciful, using that as your Father's mercy. The definition of mercy is withholding what you and I do deserve. Grace is a gift that we don't deserve. Deserve. Grace is a free gift that we don't deserve. Mercy is withholding what we do deserve.
Says, judge not and you will not be judged. Condemn not, you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give it and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. He also told them a parable. Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his Teacher, but everyone, when he is fully trained, will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do you not notice the log that is in your own? Oftentime are more tolerant of our own sin than other people's.
Woe to you for being so gracious for your own sin, but being immediately judgmental in another of your friend's sin that has the same struggle as you. How can you say to your brother, brother, let me take out the speck that's in your eye when you yourself do not even see the log it's in your own? He's like, how can you even point out.
The sin issue, the tiny sin issue in their life, when you're blinded by the same issue in your own life?
And he goes down in verse 43, for no good tree bears bad fruit. For again, does a bad tree bear good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. You know that trees are known by their fruit. If I squeezed an orange and apple juice came out, you would freak out. So why is that the case? That when Christians are squeezed by the world, that hatred, selfishness, pride, greed and lust come out? Why is that?
Jesus ain't looking for mouth breathers, he's checking for fruit.
And you and I need the Holy Spirit in our life so that when we go through the trials and tribulations of life, when we are tested and squeezed, the love of God comes out. Joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. And here's the craziest thing. An apple tree doesn't have to try to grow apples in the same way. When you love God, you don't have to try to manufacture this fake relationship. When you just love God, it'll naturally manifest in your life. Verse 45. A good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil out of his evil treasure produces evil. Out of the abundance of the heart. The mouth speaks. Be careful what you say.
You know, a lot of times we say things out of our mouth and act like we're joking, but that comes from a deeper place. It comes from our heart. And then he ends chapter six with this. Jesus says, why do you call me Lord, Lord and not do what I tell you? How many people do that?
How many people call Jesus Lord but they don't listen to him?
How many people? How many people say that they love God and they don't listen to him? He says, everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he's like. He's like a man building a house who dug deep and Laid the foundation on the rock. You gotta build your life on this thing called the Word of God. No wonder your life is crumbling because it's not founded on the Word of God. No wonder you're struggling with sin and temptation, because you ain't rooted on the Word of God. You're rooted on your feelings. Feelings are wishy washy. They're good service. They ain't good masters. And he says you need something that's unwavering and changing. You need the Word of God, which is God Breathe, a timeless love letter from heaven that impacts generations past, present and future without having to change. We need something like that to live on. He says when a flood arose, the stream broke against the house and could not shake it because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like who? The one who built the house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, it immediately fell and ruined the house. Was great. We're living in a day and age right now where false doctrine is rising hard and people are living sinful lives. We're becoming a godless world right now. And we need the Word of God in our lives so that when we face the trials and tribulations of the world, we don't have to fear. We can rest assured in knowing who God is in his truth.
