Welcome back to another episode of the Bryce Carver Podcast. I'm Bryce and today we are on Proverbs 22 out of the 31 chapters in Proverbs. Let's break it down. Let's get into it. Verse 1 A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches and favor is better than silver or gold. So wealth can come in many forms. Verse one is telling us right now the wealth of respect and excellent character being recognized is valuable beyond riches. So he's saying a good reputation being recognized by your excellent character and respect is of high value. Verse 2 the rich and the poor meet together. The Lord is the maker of them all. There's no amount of money in your bank account that makes you less valuable than someone else. We're all of the equal value because the price that God puts on us is our own, is his own life and were made in his image. Verse 3 the prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it. The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. The person who has humility and fears the Lord is well on their way to the path of wisdom. They can expect blessings, certainly spiritual blessings, but the reward for humility and the fear of God is blessings from the Lord. Thorns and snares are the way of the crooked. Whoever guards his soul will keep far from them. Train up a child in the way you should go. Even when he is old, he will not depart from it. Now verse six is really interesting. Children need training and the job of the parent is not to just let them grow up in any circumstance or particular way, but to train them up in righteousness. And this is key that Verse six is saying even when he is old, he will not depart from it. When a child is trained up in the proper way, even if they may rebel for a season or leave for a season, they will return. Proverbs ver. 22, 6 says verse 7 the rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. Whoever sews injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his fury will fail. Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor. God will bless the one who is generous to others. And one way we can express our generosity, verse nine tells us, is giving to the needy and the poor. Verse 10 Drive out a scoffer, and strife will go out, and quarreling and abuse will cease. He who loves purity of heart and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend. Inner purity often shows itself through gracious filled words. Verse 12 the eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he overthrows the words of the traitor. The sluggard says, there is a line outside I shall be killed in the streets. The mouth of the forbidden woman is a deep pit. He with whom the Lord is angry will fall into it. Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him. Children are not born morally neutral. Everyone is born with a sinful nature. But physical correction, when properly and wisely applied, can help drive away the child's inborn foolishness. Verse 16 Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth or give to the rich will only come to poverty. Now verse 17 on we're going to read more Nuggets of Wisdom Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge, for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you. What's the reward for applying wisdom to your life? Pleasantness, if all of them are ready on your lips that you may trust, that your trust may be in the Lord. I have made them known to you today, Eve. I have made them known to you today, even to you. True wisdom makes us more dependent on God and this call in verses 17 through 19 we've seen echoed throughout all the Proverbs. Trust in the wisdom of the Lord, trust the Lord Incline your ear and heart to understanding. Verse 20 have I not written to you for 30 sayings of counsel and knowledge, to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you? Do not rob the poor because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate, for the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them. Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare. A person who often can't control their anger displays bad character. And Proverbs 22, verses 24 through 25 tells us that a man who has no self control and no control over their anger is bad company. And if you befriend an angry man, someone that can't control their temper, you could potentially learn his ways. Verse 26 Be not one of those who gives pledges, who puts up security for debts. If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you? Do not be responsible for the debts of other people. We've seen this echoed throughout scripture verse 28 and 29 to close us out, do not move the ancient landmark that your fathers have set. Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings he will not stand before obscure men. Wisdom pushes us and encourages us towards excellence. When we seek and apply the wisdom of God to our life, when we incline our ear and heart to the understanding of the Lord, it drives us to create discipline, good habits, and drives us to excellence. “Today we are on Proverbs 22 out of the 31 chapters in Proverbs. Let's break it down. Let's get into it.”
— Bryce Crawford [00:45]
Bryce begins with Proverbs 22:1, highlighting the paramount importance of a good name over material wealth.
“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”
— Proverbs 22:1
He explains that true wealth encompasses respect and excellent character, which hold more value than mere financial riches. A reputation built on integrity and respect is invaluable.
Discussing verse 2, Bryce underscores the egalitarian view that both the rich and the poor are created by the Lord, emphasizing intrinsic human value regardless of economic status.
“The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.”
— Proverbs 22:2
He reinforces that no amount of money diminishes one's worth in God's eyes, as all are created in His image.
In verse 3, Bryce contrasts the prudent and the simple, advocating for humility and fear of the Lord as pathways to wisdom and blessings.
“The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”
— Proverbs 22:3 [02:15]
He elaborates that humility and reverence for God lead to spiritual and sometimes material blessings, steering individuals away from life's pitfalls.
Verse 6 receives significant attention as Bryce discusses the critical role of parents in guiding their children.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6 [04:10]
Bryce emphasizes that diligent and righteous upbringing ensures that children maintain their moral compass into adulthood, even if they temporarily stray.
Bryce warns against exploiting the poor, citing verse 16 to illustrate that oppressing the needy ultimately leads to one's own downfall.
“Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.”
— Proverbs 22:16 [07:30]
He connects this to broader biblical teachings on justice and the ethical treatment of the less fortunate.
In verse 26, Bryce advises caution against becoming guarantors for others' debts.
“Be not one of those who gives pledges, who puts up security for debts.”
— Proverbs 22:26 [09:20]
He explains the importance of financial prudence and the potential risks of overextending oneself to help others financially.
Bryce consistently highlights the theme that wisdom, character, and spiritual integrity outweigh material wealth. This pursuit leads to a more fulfilling and blessed life.
Integrity in actions and maintaining righteousness in daily life are portrayed as essential for garnering God's favor and building a lasting legacy.
Generosity, especially towards the poor and needy, is emphasized as a pathway to divine blessings and societal harmony.
