Hey, everyone. Brendan Hartnett, Rapid Response Editor at the Bulwark, Here I am back at the Kennedy center where last night, in the middle of the night, Trump's name was officially removed from the building behind that tarp right over there. Around 2:30 in the morning, I caught up with Representative Joyce Beatty, who has been leading the fight to get Trump's name off the building. Check out what she had to say. Dear I wanted to first just ask big picture, what's going on right now? What brought us here?
B
Well, we're here at the Kennedy center, and obviously we're here because they put the scaffolding up and, and by midnight yesterday, they were to have removed Donald Trump's name. Unfortunately, we had a storm and wind and we certainly didn't want anyone to work in unsafe conditions. So Trump and his team put in another request for an extension and they are going to work in good faith and I'm okay with that as long as they don't stop working. We weren't clear at the beginning that there would be a tarp that you see up here. So this is in true Donald Trump fashion. Cover up, covering up. But the American people will witness in the morning that his name will be removed from the Kennedy Center.

Have you received any private back channeling from any Republicans who are agreeing with you that this unilateral action from the executive branch is unconstitutional?
B
I've had some good whispers.
A
Okay.
B
Thank you for doing it. We love the Kennedy Center. Keep up the fight. This shouldn't have happened. Nothing public, but a lot of good whispers.
A
When they had the vote about renaming the Kennedy center, they claimed it was unanimous. Correct. But obviously you were on zoom and you said that you were muted. Can you share any more details with that? Because that just sounds absolutely crazy.
B
Well, that's in part what started this. So when we learned, and I was very surprised because it wasn't a full agenda item that they were going to name this, but Donald Trump's name on it. I pushed my button to speak. And so I thought it was just a technical thing. So it would mute and then unmute, and then it would mute right back after I said, I disagree. This is Joyce Beatty. And then I actually got a message on my screen that said, you will not be unmuted to speak. Well, that did not sit well with someone who always tells people, your voice is your power, your message. And that's how this really began, because as I looked into it, and then we found out, of course, that it was unlawful, that he could not just do this this needs to be an act of Congress, because we know it was Congress, two months after the President was assassinated, that we made this the only living memorial to President Kennedy.

Now, I know it's getting late. I don't want to keep you long. We do have a few thousand followers who've been staying with us all night and who have been dying to hear from you today. So I just want to ask you, any final message for them and anybody else who, you know during these trying times based on your action and what you're expecting to see here or anything else you'd like to see, say to people across the country?
B
I'd just like to say thank you. Thank you for being a follower. Thank you for being interested in. And hopefully this is also about hope. This is bigger than the Kennedy Center. This is about our democracy. This is about the rule of law. This is about what Americans want to see. They want to see people fighting for them. And tonight, I want them to know I'm fighting for them, not only for the Kennedy center, but for a whole host of other things, whether it's voting rights, whether it's affordability. Food is too high, gas is too high, and we need to speak up and stand up. And this is what happens when you fight. The administration is doing something unlawful. You win.
A
Congressman Roman, we so appreciate your time and all your hard work. All right, hopefully this is gone by morning.
B
Thank you.
